Around 3 months ago, I made my dad watch puella magi madoka magica with me. Personally, I absolutely adore all the main 5 girls!! <33 I love them all to death and my favorite changes like every other day XD (I think its Kyouko right now but idkkkkk omg I love them all sm <3333)

Anyway, the ENTIRE time we watched the first three episodes my dad just kept going on and on and on about how annoying Mami is, and like, normally I don't care if people hate on characters I love, but this is my dad, so I cared very much. :,3 I kept going on and on about how much I loved Mami and my dad kept mocking me </33

When it had gotten to her death my dad kept cheering and clapping :,(

I was pretty surprised that PMMM had over double the votes of Sailor Moon when I saw it.

to be fair from what I've heard PMMM is really good and people love it, while SM is something where yeah everyone loves it but it's not as often someone's 'omg you HAVE to watch this!' show.

-toilet bound hanako-kun (1 season, ongoing, watch on animixplay)

i also rec reading the manga because they're doing a restart project on this series to include stuff they missed from the manga! :3 i read my manga on manganelo!

-k-on (2 seasons, 1 movie, watch on animixplay)

the very, very first anime i watched :') it's so cute and has the right amount of emotional moments, it's literally the best</3

-puella magi madoka magica (1 season, 1 movie, watch on animixplay)

my favourite, second to k-on! the only thing i'll say about this is it's so fucking sad and has a shitload of lesbians.

-magia record (watch after puella magi madoka magica! 2 seasons, watch on animixplay)

there was supposed to be a season 3 but got cancelled, unfortunately! :c but it still has alot of important things that connect to pmmm so i recommend watching it!

and for korean series and movies, i recommend:

-sky castle (1 season, completed, netflix)

LITERALLY ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED KOREAN SERIES EVER. it's my favourite one too and is just simply amazing!

-the glory (1 season, next season comes in march, netflix)

breathtaking and so good so far. the mc's backstory is so sad and her watching her slowly get revenge makes me so happy for her aaa

-welcome to waikiki (1 season, ongoing?, netflix)

A CUTE AND FUNNY COMEDY! also has romance and sad parts, little bit of everything yk!

-bring it on, ghost! (1 season, completed, used to be on netflix but can watch on yt!)

i cried and laughed (mostly laughed) sm during this series! it was one of the first korean series i watched and i hope you love it hehe. you can watch it on this playlist on yt!

Madoka was my first and really only magic girl anime, what do you reccomend thats better?

You can pretty much throw a dart at a list of mahou series and hit one that's better tbh but some recommendations:

-most precure series. Some are a bit of a miss but Star Twinkle, Heart catch, happiness charge, futari wa, mahou tsukai, Yes! precure 5, and I believe the current season Tropical Rouge are all pretty good seasons and it's hard to go wrong with precure.

-Princess Tutu. Does what Madoka Magica Fans claim pmmm does insofar as being a bit of a deconstruction. REALLY good show with some wacky fantasy elements.

-Sailor moon, especially the first three series but particularly the first one. Hard to compile a list of magical girl series without mentioning sm lol. It's a classic for a reason and I'm really a fan of the art style especially the backgrounds in this series. The characters themselves are iconic too, Sailor Jupiter has been a long time favorite.

-Tokyo Mew Mew. To be honest this one doesn't exactly excel in any one aspect going off my memory but it's a solid show and it helped popularize Maid Cafes, the show and manga predate the first permanent ones. Ichigo is an iconic catgirl and I will forever have a soft spot for this show.

-Cardcaptor Sakura. I'm really bias here to be fair as it's probably my favorite show, period. The characters here develop in such a natural yet staggering way throughout the series and the work put into making Tomoeda feel like a real city people live in comes through in aces. Also it's pretty queer in a lot of ways both Sakura and Syaoran being pan and bi respectively in canon and it's pretty heavily hinted her brother is involved with her main crush at the start of the series. There's other stuff too but if I talk any more about ccs imma start rambling.

-Flip Flappers. A few issues with this one but if you liked Madoka Magica this is like a way better version. Artsy type mahou show with two leads who are very gay together except this one they end up together, alive and happy! Wow! Who knew such a thing was possible? Even has some weird time stuff. It's also only 12 episodes and has one of the cutest ending themes I've ever seen/heard.

Some other ones I've not personally watched but hear good things about from trusted friends:

-creamy Mami

-Ojamajo DoReMi (there's a few series under this and they're all good from what I understand)

-mermaid melody pichi pichi pitch

-Shugo Chara

Some shows/series to avoid like the plague:

-Magical girl rising project

-mahou shoujo site

-mahou Shoujo ore

-magical girl apocalypse

All of these basically take the Madoka Magica formula of making girls suffer simply for the fun of watching them suffer and crank it to like 11. Ore is also very transphobic. Questionably Yuuki Yuuna goes here, I've heard it ends alright but I only got a handful of eps on before the ableist overtones made me stop. Really hype initial transformation sequence for the lead tho.

On a brighter note, some Magical Girl-likes worth watching:

-little witch academia (particularly the 25 episode series on Netflix)

-Revolutionary girl Utena. Lots of really good themes and art here, considered a classic and extremely queer.

This list isn't complete by any means and there's probably a few notable ones I've missed that just slipped my mind at the moment but this list as is is a few weeks solid worth of media and a good starting point imo~

i agree sm when ppl say that y’all hype up homuras maturity WAYYY too much!! it hurts cause rewatching the show when im older has me realizing how naïve homura can be at times. (like the way she, on a whim, made her wish without thinking of how to word it and such) like, not to say that when she WAS 14 she wasn't mature because she was; I just feel as if since she never got the chance mature fully and so later (the final timeline we see in pmmm) we see her with the maturity of a young adult who still makes the rash decisions of a desperate teenager. then again, this is coming from someone who has never watched rebellion, so i am not sure how exactly the plot develops after ep 12 but still. this has been plaguing my thoughts for far too long and i needed to say it
