Fred Weasley raked and rummaged through the rows of never-ending jars and vials that cluttered the shelves of the potions store cupboard, meanwhile his brother George stood watch.
“Quick, he’s coming.” The lookout urged, his tone a hushed whisper. The dungeon bat himself was only a few steps away, ready to round the corner at any second. “Just grab it, Freddie, come on!”
“Okay, okay.” The second brother replied, continuing to search the shelves. “I got it!”
Jumping out of the cupboard just in the nick of the time, brandishing his stolen vial, Fred Weasley took the time to celebrate his own handiwork, before the twin boys set off in the opposite direction from which their potions master was heading.
“Hold on just a minute.” Professor Snape droned, enunciating each word perfectly. “What exactly are you two young Gryffindors doing loitering around by the Slytherin dorms, not to mention… my office?”
The twins shared a look of half panic, half menace. If Severus wasn’t a sceptic, he would almost believe they were communicating telepathically on which excuse they would use this time.
“We had a class.” Fred blurted out idiotically.
Scepticism validated.
Clocking the single raised eyebrow that meant Snape was about to dish out punishments if he wasn’t provided with a better excuse in the next three seconds.
“What he means is; we had a class with the Slytherins. Professor Y/L/N wants us to work on a project together, we were just leaving from a study session.”
“Very well.” Snape hummed, moderately satisfied. “But know if I find out that the two of you are up to something, it’ll be a month’s detention with Mr. Filch. Is that perfectly clear?”
“Of course, Professor.” The boys chimed in unison. Two equally large grins plastered on their faces having gotten away with the initial phase of their prank.
“What the hell did you say that for?” Fred nudged his brother. “Wouldn’t Snape just go and ask her if she set a group project.”
“Of course, he wouldn’t. Snape and Y/L/N hate each other. That’s what makes this prank so perfect!”
Later that day at the Gryffindor table the Harry, Hermione and the younger half of the Weasley clan all gathered to discuss their long-awaited revenge plan on Snape. No less than a month ago, the old bat took away near to 100 points from Gryffindor house because he claimed they were disrupting the Slytherin's Quidditch practice, Meanwhile Malfoy and his entourage got away Scot-free, despite the fact it was they who took unlawful control of the pitch during their slot in the first place. The twins had been working on a plan to get back at him ever since.
“So, who are you going to give it to?” Ron asked, fiddling with the precious liquid curiously.
“Professor Y/L/N.” George responded.
“Why her?”
“She’s always going on about how much she hates Snape. It’ll be hilarious.” Fred cut in, snatching the bottle back from his younger brother, concealing it in the inner pocket of his robes.
“Aren’t you worried Snape will catch you.” Ginny questioned.
“He’ll be too distracted to even notice. And by the time it’s worn off, he’ll have forgotten all about us.”
*
It didn’t take much to distract y/n early in the morning, she never was fully awake before she finished her morning coffee. Forever drifting off at her desk, doing laps of the room to keep herself awake and constantly forgetting half her coursework back in her office, there would be plenty of times to slip the potion into her drink unnoticed.
Just as the twins had predicted, right in the middle of the lesson the ditsy professor let out a sudden gasp.
“There I’ve gone and done it again; I’ve left the assignment on my other desk.” She face-palmed. “Give me a second guys, carry on with your work, I’ll be right back.” She called, already sprinting out the door.
“Give it here.” George demanded; a hand outstretched his brother.
Casting a simple levitating charm, George Weasley enchanted the vial to discreetly float across the edge of the classroom, slowly unscrewing the top, before tipping the entire contents into the woman’s mug of black coffee.
The boys exchanged a smile and thumbs up.
Mission Successful. Now all they had to do was sit back, and let their plan unfold, wreaking havoc in its wake.
As she always did during her free period on a Monday, y/n headed off to the library for one last moments peace before the chaos of the week to come well and truly set in.
It wasn’t uncommon for y/n to run into Professor Snape in the far corner of the library, he often frequented similar quiet spots as she, though rarely did either of them address each other’s presence with little more than a simple nod of the head.
As usual Severus sat in the opposite corner from y/n, nothing more than a large bay window separating the couple. To and onlooker the juxtaposition was staggering; y/n loved lounging comfortably on a large pillow reminiscent of muggle bean bag, sipping the dregs of her coffee while reading, Severus, on the other hand, perched himself on an old hard wooden chair, hunching over a nearby desk while he scribbled away on his stacks of parchment.
Y/n liked it this way. She could keep a wary eye on Snape out the corner of her eye, while Snape couldn’t see her at all unless her turned his whole body. The man made her nervous, she couldn’t bare to sit under his intense gaze unknowingly.
Distracted from his writing by the harsh sniffs of y/n, Severus could take it no longer. He spun on his seat, glaring down at the young woman eyeing the contents of her mug and subsequently sniffing it suspiciously.
“Do you mind?” Snape growled irritably.
“Sorry.” She shrugged bashfully. “It’s just… nevermind.”
“Go on.” He pressured with a roll of his eyes.
“Does this coffee taste funny to you? It does to me, only I’m sure I can’t smell anything out for the ordinary.” The woman rambled, continuing to sniff her coffee before tasting it once more. She retracted in disgust, the strange flavour still dancing on the tip of her tongue.
“I am not going to taste your coffee.” Snape grouched.
Turning back to his papers, annoyed by the trivial suspicions of his colleague, Severus shook his head disapprovingly. However, the potions master within him would not stop nagging the rest of his brain to investigate.
“Come with me.” He sighed, piling up his belongs reluctantly.
“What? Why?”
“I have reason to believe the Weasley twins might have slipped a potion in your drink. I need you to come back to my office so we can figure out which one before the effects kick in.”
Y/n nodded vigorously, rushing after the potions professor hastily as he stormed his way down to the dungeons.
“Take a seat.” Severus offered, fetching his index of the Hogwarts potion inventory.
“Let’s get this over with.” He mumbled, running a large finger down the inner spine of the book. “I know how much you hate to be around me.”
“That’s not true.” Y/n confessed.
“I’m sorry?”
“I don’t hate being around you. I don’t hate being around anyone.”
“You can’t stand it then; the exact terminology doesn’t make much difference to me, frankly.”
“Who ever told you that? I don’t hate you Severus, or even dislike you, not even a little a bit. In fact, I rather love you.”
Severus’s finger came to a half halfway down the page. His entire being buffering for a second to process the witch’s blunt confession.
“Excuse me?” He scoffed.
“I love you, Severus. I have done since the day I met you, I suppose. I only keep my distance because I assume you don’t feel the same. And it hurts… so fucking much.” She exclaimed, resting her face in her palms.
“Amortentia, it is.” Snape muttered to himself, flicking back to the start of his book.
As he reached for the antidote hidden in his apothecary of drawers, Severus paused for a moment, allowing his eyes to scan over the clearly very distressed woman.
“Humour me.” He said, relaxing back in his chair. “What exactly about me do you love?”
The woman slowly pealed her hands away from her face. While Severus knew it was all a delusion induced by the world’s strongest love potion, he saw no harm in prolonging her fanciful state to allow himself a moments pleasure, and feel like he was actually wanted for once in his life.
A wide infectious grin took over y/n’s face. Her eyes lighting up as she thought of all the things that made fall in love with Severus Snape.
“Everything, I guess.” She beamed. “You’re mysterious for one; that’s drew me in in the first place. Then it was your intelligence; I was utterly in awe of your genius the first time I heard you teach. And you have such a passion for potions and teaching, it was hard not to find you attractive when you worked. My favourite thing though is probably your sarcasm, you’re extremely funny, and kind when you want to be! But it often goes unnoticed because your scared people will see it as weakness.”
“Anything else?” Severus chuckled, astounded that her imagination had created quite a list.
“Well, there always has been something about your nose. I’ve always found incredibly… sexy.”
“Is that so?” Severus smirked.
The look on the woman’s face could keep him amused for hours on end. She really was utterly infatuated; her wide doe eyes sparkled in the candle light, her cheeks had blushed a shade of bright pink. He had never seen such a side to her before, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes upon.
Shame none of it was real, Severus thought to himself.
~
“Next time you boys lie to me it’ll be detention for the entire term. Twenty points from Gryffindor… for each of you.”
A chorus of groans and whines echoed along the Gryffindor table.
“You out to remember, messing around with potions can have very dangerous consequences. Amortentia is not something that should be used lightly, you’re lucky Professor Y/L/N wasn’t harmed.
“But Sir, we gave Professor Y/L/N Veritaserum.” The twins chimed in unison.
The penny finally drops.

Day 13- Spell Casting
Day 13- Spell Casting
“Dad?” Harry called out as he opened the door to Severus and his quarters late one evening. He held his Charms book up in front of his face and didn’t see Severus sitting in his usual spot by the fireplace.
“Don’t shout,” Severus said calmly from behind his copy of The Daily Prophet.
Harry put the book down. “Oh, sorry. I can’t get the hang of this spell. Can you help me?”
“Which one?”
“Summoning charm. And before you say anything, yes, I know it’s a fourth-year spell.”
Severus raised an eyebrow and put down his paper. A few seconds later, Harry’s book flew from his hand and landed neatly in Severus’s.
Harry rolled his eyes. “Yes, that was very helpful. Thank you. Now could you do it again for those of us who don’t know wandless or nonverbal magic?”
Severus smirked. “No need to be so testy, Harry.” He stood up and then waved his wand, causing all of their furniture to back against the walls, except for the end table that sat between the two armchairs. That moved to the middle of the opposite side of the living room and on it sat the Charms book.
“Alright,” Severus said, “that should do.” He turned to Harry. “Now, the most important thing is to picture the thing clearly in your mind. Imagine it coming to you. Then, as always, enunciate properly.”
Severus raised his wand and pointed it at the book. “Accio, book.” Again, it flew directly into his hands. “There’s no certain wand movement that you need to do, just aim and call for the object.”
Harry nodded and when Severus sent the book back to the table, he raised his own wand towards it. “Accio, book.”
The book seemed to hover an inch or so off the table but then fell back down with a soft thump.
“Good,” Severus said with a nod. “Try again, but focus harder. Keep thinking about it.”
It took several more tries before Harry successfully brought the book all the way across the room to him, but when he did, he couldn’t contain his excitement.
“Did you see that?!” he exclaimed, smiling brightly.
“I did. Very well done, Harry!” Severus praised as he put his hand on Harry’s shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I’m quite proud of you, Son.”
“Thanks, Dad. Can I practice some more?”
Severus nodded. “If you want. Though only for a little while longer. You have classes tomorrow and you need to get to bed soon.”
Harry groaned but didn’t argue.
Severus moved his chair away from the wall and took a seat as he continued to watch Harry practice. Before long, the boy was causing all sorts of things to zoom around the living room. Severus just hoped he realized that he was going to be in charge of making sure everything was put back in its proper place.

2. "You have to let go."
"Why am I here?" Severus asks, sitting before her desk, staring Minerva down with bright, baleful eyes.
The bags under them are more pronounced than she's seen on him in years. His clothes hang looser on his slight frame... The signs remind her of when he'd first come to teach at the castle, following the Potters' demise. Grief has gripped his heart.
"There was nothing you could have done, Severus," she says in a tone that's meant to broker no argument.
It doesn't work on him.
"I could have ignored that doddering, old fool and maybe they'd both still be alive," he spits out, back straight in his chair and his tea forgotten on the desk in front of him.
"Aye," she concedes softly. "Or we might all be dead and ruled by Voldemort."
His face sours and Minerva can see his eyes are glittering, where the torchlight catches them as he looks away.
"I promised her memory that I would protect her son, since I condemned her," he says, voice cracking.
"Not all promises can be kept," she says warily, pausing as she searches for the words to get through to him. "What Albus did was unconscionable. I'll forever be angry with him for raising that boy with the intention of him dying when Albus needed him to, instead of scouring the world of magic for a better solution... For all his graces, he was not without serious fault. Not the least of which was his being convinced of his own brilliance..."
Severus remains silent. The vim and vigor he'd walked into her office with is gone, leaving the broken shell of the man behind.
"You have to let go," she whispers so emphatically that there's no trouble hearing it in her still office. "You made mistakes as a young man. You've spent years of your life atoning. It's done, Severus. You have done more than enough. Neither Lily nor Harry would want you to continue on this path. You have to let go."
"I don't deserve to."
"Yes, Severus, you do," she says with all the heart she can muster.
She stands, moving around the desk to stand before him. He looks up, eyes sad, looking like the burdens of a lifetime weigh him down.
"... I don't know how," he admits.
Minerva reaches down, gripping his arms and pulling him to standing. He looks at her, confused for a moment before she pulls him in, hugging him tightly. There's a pause where he just hangs limply in her arms, then he's hugging back.
"We'll figure it out together, then," she says, holding on like a mother to her cub.
He offers no response other than a nod she can feel against her shoulder, but he holds back.
It's enough.

Some silly doodles of the best Hogwarts teacher I did in-between working on my oil painting.
The first one depicts a spell gone bad (or rather in need of some tweaking).
The second is just Snape snatching a moment for himself to recharge in preparation for dealing with the students’ (and Dumbledore’s) tomfoolery. (I saw the Snapetober prompts list and got inspired)

Snapetober day 1- Autumn
Autumn.
Leafs falling, wind blowing.
Severus picked up a orange leaf from the floor and crushed it.
The sound was weirdly satisfying.
He breathed in.
Severus loved Autum. Not too cold, not too hot. Neutral territory.
Just like him.
Of course it could be painfull, since... that night, but it wasn't enough to make him too sad to enjoy.
He touched the baby owl resting on his jacked, on his shoulder.
He had found it next to its mother, killed by hunters. He adopted it and named it Ra, after the egiptian god.
It helped Severus throught the pain of losing Lily. It was still crushing, but not so hard with his new friend.
He looked at the sky. There were big clouds, made golden by the sunset.
It was all Severus ever wanted. Peace.
He never really got it.
One of the few reason he was still sane was autumn. It was relaxing, and, weirdly, also the time of the year where the dark lord called him less.
He could almost forget the pain that the mark caused.
The mark was a test in itself. Only the stronger could be called without passing out or screaming in pain.
Severus deeply regreted it.
Sensing his sadness, Ra rubbed its head on Severus' neck. It was warm and it felt good.
It felt like... home.
Not the "home" he was abused and broken over and over again in.
Not the "home" he was targeted and stalked in.
True home, something good.
The only place that feeling ever came up in was Malfoy Mannor, when drinking tea with Lucius and Narcissa.
No where else.
It was one of his few sources of confort.
"Autumn, my beloved."

Prompt List by @sxvxrxssnape
Masterlist page // Masterlist post // AO3 // LINK TREE
Tumblr media
You hadn’t meant for the Aguamenti spell to hit Severus. You had aimed at the infuriating James Potter but as another student in the gathered crowd at the inner courtyard had bumped into you you had hit Severus instead who was now utterly soaked in water as well as hung upside down by the wand of Potter.
Your wand was still aimed at Severus when his eyes found yours. The pure pain and hurt that was within those beautiful onyx eyes tore at you like nothing else.
“Well, would you look at that,” Potter laughed out as Severus tumbled to the ground when the other boy’s concentration broke. “Even the girlfriend wants to join in the fun!” Sirius howled out with laughter as your heart hammered and you were frozen in place. No, no I didn’t-
Severus scrambled up, water dripped from him and he looked so hurt your own eyes watered. “Severus, no, I didn’t—,” you pushed out while you shook your head but the crowd’s laughter drowned out your voice. “Seems she’s come to her senses, doesn’t it, Snivellus?” Potter laughed out with a sneer as Severus’ body stiffened for a second before he bolted.
“SEVERUS!” you called out as you tried to push your way through the crowd of students that had gathered for the spectacle that was tormenting your boyfriend. Four on one as usual.
You finally managed to get away from the other students and had just enough time to see a glimpse of his cloak disappearing into Hogwarts and taking a left. You ran while you called his name with pain in your voice. You had to stop him, had to explain you were aiming for Potter and not him. I only wanted to help, you thought as your feet pounded against the stone steps that lead you up to the large open doors.
You took a left and kept running. “Severus?!” you called out with panting breaths but there came no reply. But you heard his footsteps echo faintly. You followed the sound through twisting corridors, down stairs, up other and finally you ended up in the dungeons, in one of the abandoned hallways that lead to nothing but storage rooms.
“Severus?” you said as you were trying to squeeze air into your lungs. “Where are you? Please, I didn’t mean to!” you called out. Please, I didn’t mean to, please, don’t do this. You thought as you knew how delicate Severus was, how sensitive he was, how fragile your relationship was since he always doubted you. Even after having been together for over a year.
You walked as quietly as you could, slow steps so as not to miss any nooks or crannies where he could have hid himself. He was good at that, good at hiding and disappearing - yet the Gryffindor boys always found him. Even when you couldn’t, they did. They always did and it infuriated you to no end that they appeared to seek him out so ferociously only to treat him so cruelly.
“Sev? Please,” you whispered out, “I didn’t mean to.” Your heart was aching, your lungs burned and you felt as if you would lose him without being given a chance to explain. You didn’t want that. You loved him and you knew he loved you even if he had never spoken the words out loud as you had done several times.
You searched and searched. As you reached the end of the hallway you finally found him. He was leaning against the wall with his hands flat against the cold stone and his head dipped so his long black hair shielded his face from view. The image made you feel so sad, it exuded a sense of despair and loneliness.
“Sev,” you said and reached a hand out to take a hold of his upper arm. “Do, not, touch, me.” You stilled at the harsh words. His voice was so dark, so low. Gritted out. “Sev, please, I didn’t mean to-” “Sure,” he gritted out. “Please, I was aiming for Potter, I was trying to help-” “I do not care to hear your lies,” he gritted out, “I already knew, (Y/n).” “I’m not lying! I wanted to help but they pushed-” “SHUT IT!” he shouted as he turned towards you with furious anger in his deadly glare, “I already know you’re on their side! I already know you’re using me for entertainment!”
Your heart was being torn to pieces as he shouted at you with such coldness. “I love you, Severus. I would never-” “Lies, lies, lies,” he gritted out as he stepped closer with clenched fists. He looked terrifyingly broken.
“Perhaps I should call you a filthy mudblood and be done with it,” he gritted out callously. “W-what?” you stammered out as your tears began to flow. “You heard me,” he gritted out as he straightened and glared down at you with hollow eyes that seemed colder than ever before. “Do it all over again, give them what they want and be done with it.”
Your heart was hurting something fiercely as he spoke of what had happened some time ago with Lily Evans, his previous friend who you considered to be anything but that to him.
“You think I’m like her?” you whispered out as your throat was closing up at the comparison. “You are exactly like her,” he growled out and it felt as if you were being broken by his words, bit by bit.
You shook your head as anger surged through your body. Your fists clenched and you glared up at him through your tears. He remained harsh and cold but the anger and pain were there, in his eyes.
“I am nothing like her!” you screamed at him, “I have done nothing but care for you, nothing but support you, I’ve been bending over backwards to make sure you always know that I want nothing but goodness for you!” Your lungs heaved as you cried through your anger.
“I love you and I’ve told you and showed you time and time again! I’ve cried myself to sleep over you. I’ve endured mocking, assault, glares and whispers and name callings for you. I’ve done everything I can to show you that I want to be with you, that I love you!” you cried out loudly in the turmoil of anger and hurt.
You snivelled and tried to blink away the tears. It hurt so bad to be compared to the girl who had been such a horrible friend, such a terrible person, someone who stood by and watched your Severus be tormented, someone who was supposed to be his friend yet ended up in a damn relationship with the damn bully who made your boyfriends life hell at Hogwarts.
“I’ve only cared for you! I’ve bent, I’ve cried, I’ve hid my pain because you matter more to me and I’ve done everything I can to show you that I fucking love you, you idiot!” Your voice broke on the last word and you could no longer look at him so you turned your head away as you hugged yourself.
“How could you do this?” you whispered through a sob, “How could you say this to me when I’ve done nothing to warrant it..? I’ve only ever cared for you and now, I make one mistake that wasn’t even my fault and you compare me to her?” Your voice was quiet and you could not stop trembling as pain slashed your insides like sharp claws.
Severus remained silent and cold. It was as if he had turned himself off completely and you could not reach him. I’ve been breaking myself to make you realise that I love and care for you… I’ve been so alone, so hurt, so worried, constantly worried and careful. I’m so tired of this.
“I can’t break myself any further to make you see that I truly love you,” you whispered out, “If I am not enough as I am, if you won’t even consider that I genuinely care for you then, there is no point in me tormenting myself like this. If it will never lead to you seeing reality for what it is, seeing me. I’m done, Severus. I’m done with this.”
You turned around without giving him a second glance. You needed to get away before you were unable to move. You needed to walk away before your legs would no longer carry you. You needed to remove yourself from him before you were to break down completely as your heart was shattering within your chest.
I love you so much… But I don’t know if you can love me, can allow yourself love… He did not chase you, he did not come after you. He let you go without a word, with no sound at all. Not even a pained breath, not even an exhale or gasp.
He had not tried to stop you and that only made you hurt further for it meant you were right. He was not in love with you as you were with him and he truly did not believe in the emotions you time and time again had declared for him in all manners possible.
It hurts, you thought as you rounded a corner and were out of his view. This hurts too much, you thought as you stumbled and leaned against something of stone close by. A wall or a pillar, perhaps a statue, you did not know for your eyes was cinched shut. It hurts…
Your heart hurt fiercely as flashes of your time with Severus erupted within your head. The little smiles, the hesitant hand-holding, the sweet kisses when none other would see, the way he blushed when you told him he was cute or that you loved him. Sev, why..?
You sank to the cold floor and cried. You cried alone in the semi-darkness with nothing but pain and flashbacks, of hurt and his comparison of you with Lily for company. You crumbled and the pain seemed all-consuming as the image of his hurt eyes and soaked hair were what your brain decided to linger on.

🦇 snapetober 2021 🦇
hello, my fellow sniends and snovers! the time has come again to celebrate our favorite bat of the dungeons, whump edition! this year, ive decided on two (2) prompt lists! overall there will be 16 “lighthearted” spooky prompts and 15 angst prompts that will alternate every day throughout october. if you choose to only do one list, that’ll give you 2 days to work on your submission, or you can do all of them for a whole month of spooky snape love! 🖤
as always, prompts are open to interpretation. you don’t need to write angst and alternatively, you can make the lighthearted list as angsty as you want. i tried to come up with a list that allows both (with some help from @blog4snape's incredible brainstorming). you will also see a few recycled prompts from last year’s list that i was particularly partial to.
entries for snapetober can be anything - art (in any style), writing (in any perspective, pairing, or length), photosets/edits, headcanon lists, plot bunnies you don’t actually want to write up, etc. etc. you can do as many or as little as you want, combine entries, post them late, and include whomever you want. just keep it snape-centric (and just like last year, the angst doesn’t need to be directed at severus at all!) and remember to tag it as #snapetober or #snapetober2021!
happy whumping!

Day 7- Potions
Day 7- Potions
Harry was bored.
He had been cooped up in the dungeons with Severus now for days thanks to a small— minuscule really— cold that he had gotten over the Christmas holidays. He barely even had a sniffle anymore, yet Severus was being insistent that he needed to rest for at least one more day. And to make matters worse, he was hovering like an overprotective mother.
Constantly forcing him to take nasty potions, (though he did flavor them) reminding him to put on socks, (though he supposed the dungeon floors were pretty cold), and making him eat bland foods like porridge or soup. (Though the chicken soup did make his throat feel better.)
But it didn’t change the fact that Harry was bored and wanted to be doing something.
So he decided to find Severus and let him know that he was perfectly fine now, thank you very much.
It turned out that Severus was in his lab, which suited Harry just fine since the lab was usually warm thanks to the combination of the fireplace and the heat from whatever potion Severus was brewing.
“Are you alright?” Severus asked when Harry took a seat on the stool across from where he was working. “Do you need anything?”
Harry rolled his eyes. “I’m fine, dad. I’m just bored. Couldn’t I go out and—”
“And take the risk of that cold getting worse?” Severus interrupted. “You certainly may not.”
“Da-ad,” Harry whined as he picked up an empty vial from the table and began to spin it on its side. “There’s nothing to do.”
“Read a book.” Severus began to stir the potion clockwise.
“I’ve read them all. Couldn’t you play a game of chess with me?”
“I’m sorry, Harry, but I can not. I’ve got to finish this potion for my sixth-year class tomorrow.”
Harry leaned over the table on his elbows so that he could see into the cauldron. Whatever was inside was a dark bluish color and smoking slightly.
“What is it?” he asked.
“Draught of Living Death,” Severus answered as he dropped something small and pink inside before stirring once more.
“How do you brew it? Could I help?”
Without turning his attention away from the potion, Severus reached over and picked up a potions book before handing it to Harry. “Page one hundred and thirty-seven. And no, you can’t help because it’s an extremely difficult potion even for the sixth-year students and you are only in your fourth.”
“So,” Harry protested as he turned to the page and read over the instructions. “I could get the ingredients or something. What are you up to?”
Severus sighed. “Very well. If it will keep you quiet for a while. I’m about to add the juice of the Sopophorous bean.”
Harry nodded as he read that part of the instructions, then picked up the knife that Severus had been using. “I can do that.”
However, just as he was about to cut into the bean, Severus spoke up.
“Don’t cut it. Crush it with the flat end of the knife.”
Harry looked up. “But the book says to cut it.”
“Yes, I know. But you get more juice if you crush it.”
When Harry didn’t immediately do as he was told, Severus nodded to the knife. “Go on then, Harry. I need it now, please.”
Shrugging, Harry crushed the bean and was surprised when juice poured out of it.
“Very good. Now come around here with it and you can add it in.”
Harry did as Severus asked and then watched as Snape began stirring it once more. After a few moments, the potion turned lilac and then clear.
“There we go,” Severus said, taking the stirring spoon out of the cauldron and setting it on the table. “We’ll just turn down off the heat now and let it cool.”
“That’s it?” Harry asked.
“That’s it.” Severus raised his hand and let it rest on Harry’s forehead, checking for a fever. He smiled when he only felt coolness and then put his arm around Harry’s shoulders. “How about that chess game now?”
