Wild Field Trips headcanons: the Frogwater Pond Gang
(this is for my Wild Kratts/Magic School Bus crossover AU if you're curious)
First of all, the so-called Frogwater Pond Gang consists of the following kids: Gavin, Ronan, Jenny, Katie, Aidan, and Nolan.
HC's for each of the kids:
Jenny:
The second oldest of the gang.
Full name: Jennifer Kitt
Likes to watch birds.
Favorite animal: raccoon
Sometimes her friends and family affectionately call her "Jenny Wren." Out of the MSB kids, Phoebe does it the most often.
She never leaves home without her purple backpack or her pink tennis shoes.
In her backpack: acorns, a pocket bird guide, Fig Newtons, a notebook & pencil, extra hair ties, a water bottle, a guide to mammals, and a raccoon plushie.
Biracial (need more HCs on that)
Has two siblings, one older and one younger. I have not thought of names or personalities for said siblings.
Keeps button quails as pets. For the non-bird-experts reading this, button quails are not actually quail. They are in the order Charadriiformes, making them shorebirds.
Gavin:
The oldest of the Frogwater Pond Gang.
Full name: Gavin Johnson
Favorite animal: Largemouth Bass
"Average fourth/fifth grader knows at least 10 species of fish and their biology" factoid is actually a statistical error. Fishes Gavin, who spends all his summer free time fishing, reading about fish, or visiting the aquarium, is an outlier and should not have been counted.
Proud owner of two fishing trophies. The first one is the third-place trophy he won in the contest prior to "Bass Class." And the second is obviously the one he got in the actual episode.
He gets along really well with his little brother Ronan, and his cousins Aidan and Nolan. In fact, you'd think he has three younger brothers instead of just one!
As seen in the "Animals Who Live to Be 100 Years Old" episode, his weapon of choice is a broomstick.
Ronan:
Three years younger than Gavin, and two years younger than Jenny.
Full name: Ronan Johnson
Favorite animal: Wild Turkey (but blue jays are a close second)
Likes playing soccer, hockey, and other field sports.
Most likely to find a weird bug or critter and bring it home. It happened with the milk snake AND the praying mantis egg case.
For the purposes of this AU, Gavin and Ronan's last name is "Johnson" and so are their cousin's last names.
Favorite book series is The Lord of the Rings, which his parents read to him and his brother.
Named his pet hognose snake "Tolkien." Which led to this exchange over email one time.
"Tolkien is having his first ever egg. It's. Not going well."
"TOLKIEN IS A SNAKE. HE'S MY SNAKE. MY PET SNAKE. HE IS EATING AN EGG. AUTHOR JOLKIEN ROLKIEN ROLKIEN TOLKIEN IS NOT BIRTHING AN EGG."
(Gavin told him that J.R.R. Tolkien's full name was "Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien" and Ronan believed it for an embarrassingly long time.)
Katie:
About the same age as Jenny.
Full name: Katherine Akiyama
Favorite animal: Pileated Woodpecker
Loves being out in the snow. (Favorite activity: sledding!)
She's the one who had the idea to build a tree house in the backwoods.
Enjoys drawing and writing.
I headcannon her as Japanese-American, but I don't know what else to do with that hc.
She speaks a little bit of Japanese, but not much.
Her other favorite animal is the snowshoe hare.
The name "Frogwater Pond Gang" for her friend group was also her idea. (All the friend groups in her favorite books had cool names, so her ACTUAL group of friends needed one, too.)
100 percent a daddy's girl.
Aidan
The third oldest of the gang (After Gavin and Jenny, in that order).
Full name: Aidan Johnson
Favorite animal: American Beaver
Co-founder of the "Creature Club" alongside Katie. (They meet in the tree house that Katie's dad built.)
He and his family moved to the Frogwater Pond area a few years before his little brother Nolan was born. (And a few years before the pond even existed!)
Has a pet hamster. (This is actually canon, but I don't remember if the hamster canonically has a name.)
Nolan
The youngest of the gang. (Five years younger than Aidan)
Full name: Nolan Johnson
Favorite animal: Box Turtle
Very energetic, always ready to go on an adventure.
Often imitates his big brother and older cousins.
Other notes:
Jenny, Katie, and Aidan are about the same age as Mikey (Carlos's younger brother) and Evan (DA's younger sister) in this AU. It's an interesting dynamic, since you have:
Eldest sibling (Aidan)
Middle children (Mikey and Jenny)
Youngest sibling (Evan)
Only child (Katie)
In addition to Tolkien the snake, Gavin and Ronan also have a pet cat named Lightfoot. She's a tortoiseshell with white paws, like socks.
The first MSB kids that the Frogwater Pond Gang met were Phoebe and Ralphie, who come to their neck of the woods almost every summer.
More on the cats:
Lightfoot (named after Gordon Lightfoot) is one of Brandy's kittens. The others are Joxter (currently living with the Terese-Tennelli family), Cleo (currently living with Katie), and Scotty (currently living with Uncle Brian).
Backstories for the other cat's names: Brandy is named after the song "Brandy, You're a Fine Girl," Joxter is named after the character in the Moomins series, Scotty is named after the Star Trek character, and Cleo got her name from a song that Katie's dad used to sing to her.
I need to get myself organized for the upcoming season so I thought I'd do a little rambling post about what my goals are for this season and touch on the next as well so y'all can know a bit of what's to come!
2024 Season Pairing Plans
Note: These are "planned" pairings and do not always work out.
Western Hognose Pairing 1 - Howlite X Shale (Snow X Axanthic het Snow) - plan on holding back 1x female snow
Western Hognose Pairing 2 - Citrine X Splendid (Extreme Red Albinoconda X Albinoconda) -
Northern Mexican Pinesnake Pairing 1 - Snapdragon X Dahlia
Northern Mexican Pinesnake POTENTIAL Pairing 2 - Snapdragon X Marigold
I am not going to be pairing / producing any leopard geckos in 2024!
Basic 2025 Plans:
2x leopard gecko pairings (Red Stripe RADAR X Blood RADAR & Gem Lav Jungle Bold Bandit X Lav Jungle Bold)
1x hognose pairing (Extreme Red / Purple Line Arctic (?) Super Anaconda het Albino ph Sable X Extreme Red Arctic ph Albino)
1x Pseudelaphe flavirufa pairing (Wildtype X Anery)
1x Pituophis vertebralis pairing
1x Pituophis deppei jani pairing (potential, only if I don't breed both girls this season- I don't want to breed them more than 2 times back to back without a recovery season)
General thoughts and addition plans below the cut.
General thoughts: The 2024 season will be my last year pairing / attempting to pair Shale and Splendid, both ladies will be retired from breeding regardless of the results! They're going to be 8 years old in 2024, and Garnet taught me 9-10 is typically the age female hognoses start to slow down in terms of both egg production and ease of laying. I have not started looking for my "Generation 2" hognose breeders but it's going to become a priority starting now! I'd still like to maintain my relatively small group of breeders, but maybe expand a little on the morphs I'm working with. As for other planned additions, I am still looking for the PERFECT leopard geckos (2-3 total) to add to my Red Stripe RADAR group and my Lavender Bold group.. but I am too picky and haven't added any at all this year lol. I'm always looking tho. I am going to holdback either a Lavender / Firebold cross or a Gem Snow Lav / Firebold cross that I produced in 2023 but I am going to keep all of them back from that pairing until I'm solid on which one is going to fit my plans best. I have the hardest time deciding what direction I want to go with my lavender firebold project. I would also like to add a male northern mexican pinesnake (unrelated to my current group) in 2024. If any other additions are made they will be species I already keep and just want to diversify my bloodlines / groups a bit. The only potential "new" species that will be added will be whatever I finally decide to redo my empty 125g aquarium for. I'm leaning toward like. an amphibian mansion currently. I was originally going to do turtles but I think I'd like to do something a little different and focus more on building something a bit outside of my comfort zone. More on that later I guess.
hi hello i'm ✨bored✨ and leaving this in your ask, if you find yourself bored or procrastinating (*high five*), here are the questions for you (there should be snake-related ask game):
🐍 what's your fav snake species!
🐍 what snake kind you think is the most pretty! (I personally think about sunbeam / iridescent snakes, cuz. they're iridescent!!)
🐍 what snake kind you think is the most badass / cool looking, like the James Bond of snake kingdom?
🐍 what snake kind you think is adorkably cute?
🐍 what snake kind you think is the most gothic of them all?
Hi, hello! 💜
*side glance at the thesis* You sent it in perfect time! 💜 Snake asks, let's go! 💜
🐍 what's your fav snake species!
Boa constrictor! 💜 A big and heavy animal, that squeezes its prey to death? Yes, please! 💜 Seriously, I've been obsessed with them since I was a child, they're awesome! 💜 Also, their faces are pretty. 💜
🐍 what snake kind you think is the most pretty!
Iridescent snakes are indeed very pretty! ^^ But I think I'll go with...
Leucistic ball python! 💜
🐍 what snake kind you think is the most badass / cool looking, like the James Bond of snake kingdom?
But jokes aside...
Namaqua Dwarf Adder. It's tiny (18-25cm), looks funny and is venomous. :3 According to the internet, it's not very dangerous to humans... But it'll still hurt.
🐍 what snake kind you think is adorkably cute?
Snow western hognose. Like. Look at this face! A dork! 🥺
🐍 what snake kind you think is the most gothic of them all?
Black-necked spitting cobra! 💜 It's black, cute and shoots venom! (I'm not saying goths do the last thing... But ngl, it'd be a cool ability) 💜
My Fursonas: Rosie, Moon Paw, Dot, Venom, Sky, Glitch, Timber, Tulip, Charlie, Lemon, Mochi, Pumpkin, Apollo, Bam Bam, Mabel, Mushroom, and Blair. (I know, I have a lot)
My Theriotypes: Alexander Archipelago Wolf, Red Fox, Large-Billed Crow, Calico Cat, Sea Otter, Cheetah, Friesian Horse, Lavender hognose, German Shepherd, Albino Raccoon, and Snow Leopard.
I’m in way too many fandoms/communities…
I have an obsession with making OC’s and Fursonas.
I have social anxiety, ADHD, and dyslexia, so please be patient with me ;~;

Couple of hoggie questions! I feel like I recall you answering some similar things before but I can’t find anything so sorry if you have.
A lot of the sources I’ve seen say that a 20 gal long (for males) and a 40 gal (for females) is good for adult hogs. Is this actually good, or more of a bare minimum type thing? Based on the typical sizes it seems like most hognoses would be able to fully stretch out unless they were particularly large.
Is it fine for baby hognoses to be kept on paper towels? I know they’re a burrowing species so should they get substrate when they get moved to a bigger enclosure, or earlier?
What’s your favorite hognose morph? I love lavenders and snows! :)
I’ve heard that lavenders can sometimes have fertility issues if you breed visual to visual. Have you heard of this?
I love your hoggie Sirius! Is he a normal morph? It might just be the lighting but he looks a little darker than normal in the pictures I’ve seen.
Thank you so much for running this blog! Not only is it incredibly informative, but also super fascinating, and I can’t imagine how much good you must be doing for the reptile community by educating and combating misinformation.
I hope your grandma’s recovering well!
I love getting hognose questions!!
I prefer a 40 gallon at least for all hognoses, but males can get by in a 20 gallon. Hoggies are small enough that a 40 gallon is honestly perfect for every one I've ever met - you can go bigger, but a 40 gallon hits that nice sweet spot of big enough for the snake but not so big they have trouble thermoregulating (they're small enough I'd hesitate to drop a male into a 120 gallon). I've never met even big female hoggies who have outgrown their 40 gallons!
I don't recommend paper towel for any hognoses for two big reasons. The first is that hoggies really really need to burrow, and paper towel just doesn't cut it to satisfy those instincts, so hoggies kept on paper towel often feel unsafe and uncomfortable. The second is that hognoses are not intelligent snakes, and they will more than likely shove their food all over the place while they try to eat, and I've seen more than one hognose kept on paper towel swallow large pieces of paper towel that got stuck to their food because of this. It's okay for snakes to swallow small pieces of substrate while eating, but paper towel is a different matter and can cause a lot of issues.
My favorite hognose morph is honestly just the normal! I love the pattern and the cute checkered bellies. I also like sables, though - they remind me of eastern hognoses!
Lavender is one of those morphs where lots of people suspect there are issues but there's no real proof. I've heard the visual x visual resulting in inferility thing before, and there's rumors that high-content lavenders who've been bred visual x visual for generations might have issues like spinal kinking and facial deformities. It's genuinely very hard to say if these things are morph-related or if they're because of heavy inbreeding in lavender lines - lavender is so popular that a lot of them on the market are heavily inbred.
I love Sirius too, he's my specialest little boy! His pairing was normal x twinspot - in coloration he's a normal but he is a very very low expression twinspot. He's got a couple double spots down his back but the best ones are right behind his head. You're right he's a little on the darker side but he's normal!
My little snow hognose Astarion has the fanciest name tag on the hatchling rack courtesy of StrangelyArranged on Etsy :3 [get yours here and tell 'em the hognose sent you]
