First time watching Pinky and the Brain SEASON 2 since childhood!
Figured I might as well do this one season at a time. Not much to say in the intro this time, part 1 is here, on to season 2:
.
.
.
-From here on out I think its mainly gonna be Wang, Rough Draft and Akom animating the show. As far as I'm aware, the only episode TMS animated was the Christmas special, which is a shame. Their animation stands head and shoulders above the rest.
-The call-backs to Animaniacs seem more frequent this season-Variety Speak is referenced in "It's Only a Paper World", the Warners cameo is "Pinkasso", Mount Rushmore is re-shaped to resemble the Warners in "Plan Brain From Outer Space" (heck Zalgar himself is from "Potty Emergency"), there's a Hello Nurse (or at least woman who looks just like her) cameo in "Brain of the Future", etc.
-This show still does the thing the original Animaniacs did where they name-drop a celebrity and that'll be the punchline to the joke. In fact I think this show does it more often. I've already explained why I find this kinda annoying, but to recap, jokes like these only date the show even further and make no sense if you don't recognise the celebrity. They're the main reason I don't consider either show "timeless".
-If anyone's seen "Plan Brain from Outer Space" and wondered why the lip sync seemed off at times, apparently it was originally a scrapped pilot for a spin off called "Zalgar The Brain-Eater", which was gonna be a series where Zalgar would hunt for a new brain in every episode, but the entire episode had to be rewritten to be a more Pinky and the Brain-centric story. That's why of the dialogue in this episode is ADR and often doesn’t sync with the animation.
Although, why Zalgar of all characters was almost given a pilot for his own spin off series but characters like Slappy or even Rita and Runt were apparently never considered I'll never know (no, "One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo Clock" doesn't count, that was never meant to be a pilot, that's just a rumour)
-I like how in "The Pink Candidate", Pinky outright refuses to go along with the rest of Brain's plan once he's president because it would go against everything he's supposed to stand for as president. One of my favourite things about Pinky is his morality so that was nice to see. Of course he still saves Brain from being stoned/put in jail in the end by taking blame for Brain's schemes in the end, but that's another thing I like about him-what he adds to their dynamic. Pinky's morality often stops Brain from going too far, whilst Brain often uses his intelligence to guide Pinky and help him focus.
-"Welcome to the Jungle" was also an interesting one. It was fun to see Brain out of his element, Pinky taking charge, and Snowball coming back. It was also interesting to compare the portrayal of Brain's dynamic with Snowball to Snowball's debut episode...um..."Snowball". There it was shown their friendship had turned into a bitter rivalry, and whilst that still is the case in this episode, despite Snowball being even more antagonistic than before (this time he's trying to get Pinky and the Brain KILLED), Brain's more sympathetic towards Snowball his time around, insisting that he needs help and attempting to save Snowball's life. He definitely misses having Snowball as a friend.
-The way Brain says the word "buddy" is so funny (I'm referencing "Brain's Song and especially "Megalomaniacs Anonymous" here). It's not that important but I felt the need to write that down.
-Actually, speaking of "Megalomaniacs Anonymous", that episode was interesting too. Brain goes on a pretty meta rant about how the universe treats him; "...the whole universe is playing a little cosmic joke. We'll give Brain an obsession with taking over the world, and then, never let him succeed! *cue crazed laughter*". That's a pretty funny way to point out that, yeah, the premise of the show is kinda messed up. He spends the episode trying to overcome his obsession, then tries to help Pinky become more independent when he finds out Pinky is "the most pathetic co-dependent victim on the planet", even going so far as to almost kick him out of Acme Labs. The whole episode seemed like it wanted to address both Brain AND Pinky's major character flaws. Also it was a nice reminder that Brain ultimately does want to make the world a better place, even if his methods aren't great.
-In "Brain of the Future", Brain mentions being from a "post apocalyptic future", and in the Animaniacs reboot segment "Future Brain", Future Brain mentioned that there was no food in the future, just dust. Brain + Time Travel = The Apocalypse I guess, lol.
-I was really interested in seeing "Brinky", given that is was the debut and only appearance of Romy, Pinky and the Brain's son (well, their first son). Although to be honest I don't have much to say about this episode. It was good... and that's about it. Pinky's concern over Brain's health after Romy ran away was sweet. One thing I found interesting was that Brain justified treating Romy like an experiment at first because that's how he was treated all his life. Given how he bonded with B.R.A.I.N (his robot son) it's nice to know the lesson he learned really did stick. I realise Romy is mostly only remembered because of what he means to the Brinky ship, and not because he's all that interesting or prominent on his own-he only appeared in the show once-but I wouldn't mind seeing Romy come back...as long as they don't acknowledge the comics as canon (he gets with Billie in the comics, which is just...ew).
-"Hoop Schemes" is probably one of the worst offenders when it comes to outdated references. Otherwise, it's a fine episode. The digs at Space Jam and Michael Jordan were funny though.
-Season 2 doesn't have as much overtly adult content as season 1 did, although given episodes were premiering on Kids WB! rather than at primetime by now, that makes sense.
-If I had to put it into words, it feels like whilst season 1 expands on the characters so that they're more fleshed out than they were on Animaniacs, but season 2 experiments with the characters, seeing how far it can push them in certain directions without making them out of character (testing Pinky's loyalty to Brain, putting Brain in and environment to completely new to him, etc).
.
.
.
When it comes to the characters, season 2 of Pinky and the Brain makes them more interesting than ever (at the time), I really enjoyed how Pinky, Brain, and even Snowball were written this season. The plots are also less formulaic than ever (again, at the time). The constant pop culture references/celebrity name-drops are starting to get pretty tiresome though, particularly in the dialogue-a lot of it sounded less like a conversation and more like Pinky and/or Brain were flexing how many celebrities they knew. So if the show could focus more on its characters and less on trying to be relevant, that would be great. Here's hoping seasons 3 and 4 made some improvements and are even better.
Click here for my thoughts on season 3!

Anyone else think about Brain and Snowball's former friendship from time to time? Just imagine a child Brain who isn't so different from Pinky and enjoys making his hamster friend laugh with silly faces and belly tickles. Entertaining each other is all they have when they're stuck in cages when they're not going through painful experiments. Then the splicer happens and Brain goes through first. He doesn't remember much, just lots of electricity and harsh lights and pain, and his head feels much different and heavier than before.
Just when Brain manages to open his eyes, he hears the scientists shouting and messing with the splicer, which seems to have stopped working for the time being. Then there's a loud explosion, and Brain flinches with his ears ringing painfully.
He thinks that's the end of it...and he sees somebody open a panel of the machine and extract an injured hamster with an unusually large head...and he realizes that's Snowball, and he's badly hurt from being caught in the explosion.
Brain tries to see if he's okay, but they both get dragged away for examinations and Brain isn't able to check on him until nighttime.
And Brain frantically says 'I think that explosion did something to your head. I don't know what exactly, but I'll do my best to figure it out and-"
But Snowball pushes him away. He's different now, and Brain tries to cling to his childhood friend...until one day, when Snowball decides their friendship is over for good.

New and improved from this old post, Pinky and the Brain humanizations! No Romy this time though because I didn't really have an idea of what to do with him (and I didn't last time either tbh)
When it came to Pinky and the Brain themselves the biggest thing I wanted to change was the hair. I feel like I gave Pinky too much last time (curse my obsession with drawing big hairstyles) and Brain's just wasn't working for me anymore. For Brain's new hairstyle I was very closely referencing the style of Tom Minton, who Brain was modelled after to begin with.
Many alts under the cut, I may or may not draw more outfits for them, who knows.

So, Aquamarine exists…
Tumblr media
…but what if it didn’t?
What if Nile Marie Sullivan didn’t work with Pinky and the Brain, wether it be her will or not.
That’s where Obsidian comes in.
Tumblr media
Obsidian follows an alternate version of the Aquamarine story where instead Snowball and Julia are using Nile in order to take over the world. Pinky and the Brain still left the lab, but they’re forced to live in an abandoned house rather than with Nile.
Tumblr media
She goes by Nile Sullivan instead of using her middle name as her last name in hopes that someone will find her. She’s not allowed to wear the usual outfit with bright colors and an expressive shirt.
Billie also stops by and pretends like she’s helping her (but she’s really not)
And, seeing as this is another sona, we’ve got to introduce them to the others! I’ll cover that in the next post… >:)

🎟 🎃 💐 🫂 for snowb <3
Tysmm!!! @lovedoctors !! Idk if I should rp these responses or not? But I'll try!
🎟️ What would a movie date with your f/o look like?: I think it depends! If it's movie premieres or fancy film festivals we'd dress up in style and maybe have a dinner date too! Sometimes's if the movie date's at home we'd be in more comfy clothes in a blanket!
🎃 What Halloween costumes would you and your f/o wear? Do you match?: We'd match almost every year!! :D They're so much fun! Last year me and Snowball dressed up as a vampire and a witch we looked so cute!! <3
💐 What flowers would you get your f/o? What flowers would your f/o get you?: I usually give Snowball lot's of types of flowers I think he'd like but the flowers I'd give to Snowball most are Ambrosias they're so cute like him!! I don't have a preference either so I get a lot of different flowers too, even types of flowers I never even heard of before!
🫂 How do they comfort you when you're sad?: Whenever I'm sad or stressed out Snowball would usually read to me one of our fav books! His voice is so calming it's one of my fav things about him!! He would also play his violin* to help as well! <3 If those rarely don't help we also talk about what made me sad in the first place talking about it with him helps me too!
*(I headcanon that Snowball likes classical music and has a violin too! Sorry if that's ooc or something!)

First time watching Pinky and the Brain since childhood!
I watched Pinky and the Brain as a kid (before I had even heard of Animaniacs), but not much and for years I barely remembered anything about it other than the theme song and premise. I didn't even know it was a spin-off of a different show for years, I thought it was its own thing until about 7 years later! But now that I've already seen the Animaniacs reboot, then OG Animaniacs, and then Wakko's Wish, I figured I might as well watch (or I guess re-watch) this series too! Just a heads up-I won't go episode by episode and will just be giving general thoughts, and I'll try not to repeat opinions that have been said about this show over and over again. I've only watched season one so far and there are no other segments/main characters other than Pinky and the Brain so this won't be as long as my other Animaniacs-related impressions posts. Let's do this!
.
.
.
-I think I always remembered the theme song because it's so unlike the theme songs of so many kids shows, it's sung by older men with deep voices rather than either the characters in the show or younger/friendlier sounding people, and it's a lot slower, it's almost something you could march to, which was probably intentional. In fact between that and the vocabulary used ("unfurled", "dawning of the sun", "twilight campaign", etc), it sounds like a song Brain himself probably would write.
-I was surprised to learn that like, half the segments are about 22 minutes, taking up the full episode. I thought that it's be like Animanacs where they only sometimes do full episodes (I think only about a tenth of Animaniacs' segments were 22 minutes). For the most part I prefer the 22 minute episodes so far, I guess because they're longer that forces them to be a bit more creative with the plot and that's why I like them. Ironically enough I didn't enjoy "Spellbound" (the Animanaics episode that's pretty much a backdoor pilot for this show) so that's a nice surprise.
(btw-I didn't like "Spellbound" because a lot of the jokes amount to "and then Brain gets hurt again", the cameos felt like they were just there to pad out the plot, and the running gag got old fast and made the ending predictable)
-Honestly almost all the segments so far seem a little less formulaic then the Pinky and the Brain segments in OG Animaniacs, so that's good.
-Songs are also less prevalent here, but that fits the tone of the show so that's not a complaint. The songs themselves are...okay. Not as good as most songs in Animaniacs, but they're fine.
-I like how the show expands on Brain's insecurities and megalomaniacal nature, with dialogue like "Good one Brain!" "They're all good ones Pinky." for example, or when he regrets making Pinky smart, even though it was beneficial for both of them, just because he hated the idea of not being the smartest person in the room.
-The show also does a good job of showcasing just how much how much Pinky cares for Brain, the Christmas special being a legendary example. It's really touching (and a little sad) to see just how selfless Pinky can be. In fact, Pinky and the Brain already in 13 episodes seem more fleshed as characters than in all of their appearances n the original Animaniacs, and it's pretty clear their depictions in the reboot were influenced by their characterisations in their spin off series way more than the original show.
-Now that I've watched his debut episodes, I can safely say that I think Snowball is...okay. He's fine, makes for a good villain. Still prefer Julia as an antagonist so far, but I know he shows up in more episodes so he'll probably be more fleshed out and become more of a threat. One thing though, his VA's performance is brilliant. He has such an unironically menacing voice. Roddy McDowall (RIP) did a fantastic job, and I can't wait to hear him in more episodes .
-In one episode Brain mentions that he's two years old. I like how the joke works on multiple levels-mice do have very short lifespans (about two or three years if kept in captivity), but also PatB debuted in 1995 and Animaniacs debuted in 1993 so by the time the episode aired the character Brain (if you consider the premiere of Animaniacs as his "birth") had literally existed for two years. Nice.
-Some moments make me cringe though, like sometimes they'll have characters who are POC but they're obviously voiced by white people yet they're still trying to do the accents and it's...not fun. Examples I can think of are "Tokyo Grows" and "Fly".
-lol the writers love to take digs at Bill Clinton huh? They did in Animaniacs a few times sure, but wow they do it every other episode in this show. I guess it makes sense, Brain thinks the people currently in power are buffoons so if the show doesn't portray at least some of them that way then Brain's motives wouldn't seem genuine.
-Actually, now that I think about it, this whole show so far seems a little more cynical than Animaniacs. Not only do the protagonists constantly lose, humans are often portrayed as mean and/or corrupt, idiots, or both. Yeah that would often be the case in Animaniacs, but mostly just when it came to the Warners' "special friends", otherwise the moralities and intelligence of the human characters would vary widely. Here, almost every human plays a significant role in their episode is awful in some way. Of course I know this was done on purpose-it makes it easier to understand where Brain is coming from...and because it's funny, that too.
-So Brain's given average field mice the ability to speak before Julia, some of those mice being his parents. Again, their segments in the reboot seem a lot more similar to their segments in their spin off than Animaniacs. God his parents were annoying, but it seemed Brain learned to be a bit more appreciative of Pinky by the end of the segment, so that's cool (fun fact, Brain's dad is voiced by Ernest Borgnine, the original voice of Mermaid Man from Spongebob) .
-This show's a little edgier than Animaniacs 1993 too. They've mention sexual harassment, in "Snowball" Brain tries to commit suicide by getting eaten by a cat, Brain literally gets trapped between a woman's breasts in a different episode, Pinky and the Brain get held at gunpoint multiple times (once even getting guns shoved in their mouths). It makes sense though, because the show used to premiere episodes during the WB Network's primetime schedule, however after season 1 episodes would premiere on "Kids WB!".
.
.
.
It's looking good so far! I much prefer their segments here (and their reboot ones) to the ones from the original Animaniacs-they've really improved. Characters feel more fleshed out, plots are a little less formulaic, yet feels distinct from Animaniacs due to its more cynical and edgy humour. I like it. I still prefer Animaniacs as a show (mostly because there's more variety in terms of the episodes and characters), but I like it.
