Like, if there's some form of BDSM etiquette in ancient fantasy China, Wangxian certainly don't know about it. But the incense burner serves as a pretty awesome metaphor for a roleplay fantasy or CNC scene, letting them (and readers) explore CNC dynamics without turning into a dry "how to" guide.

The dream in question is the one where Wei Wuxian fucks Bichen* and gets spanked. Towards the end, Wei Wuxian gets pushed a little too far, breaks character, and says "wake up" to Lan Wangji.

If Lan Wangji didn't actually know it was fantasy (a dream, but also CNC roleplay), "wake up" wouldn't work any better than "stop."** But sure enough, Wei Wuxian says "wake up," and he stops spanking him, they finish up quickly, wake up, snuggle, and talk*** about it.

Because "wake up" is a safe word! Or at least it functions like one in this scene, in a way that lets MXTX portray good CNC dynamics in a fun way.

*Fucking Bichen serves a purpose beyond just outlandish porn! It's intentionally ridiculous, impossible, and Wei Wuxian would never do it in real life. MXTX put it right before the book's most egregious CNC scene, specifically to show that it's all a fucking fantasy.

**Compare with their first encounter, where the poor confused top does stop to ask: "Are you actually begging for mercy or are you... doing this on purpose... ?"

***talk is a strong word for it, but there's clearly some boundaries being negotiated.

"Lan Zhan."

Blinking the irritation from the computer screen from his eyes, Lan Wangji looked at his office door.

Wei Ying was there in his fluffy bathrobe that made him look comfortable, warm, and fuckable.

Lan Wangji curled his hands into fists, willing absolute control over his urges and desires. The deadline was extremely close, and he was nearly done. Once he finished his section of the score and melodies, he would be free for seven weeks before rehearsals began.

Seven weeks of waking up late, of doing all the cooking, getting to spend time with Wei Ying and their child.

He could do this.

Wei Ying folded himself around Lan Wangji's back, draping there like a contented cat. Taking one of his fists, he kissed each of his fingers, before opening his hand and dropping something small and white into it.

It took a moment for him to place the object with it's origins, and realize what it was.

"When…did he lose it?"

Wei Ying kissed his cheek, somehow snuggling closer, resting his entire weight against Lan Wangji's back.

"This morning during our swim. I had to dive to get it."

Lan Wangji put it in a drawer, he grabbed Wei Ying by the arm pulling him into his lap, kissing him fiercely.

Wei Ying was the only one he ever dated that taunted him. He learned to play him like Lan Wangji could his qugin, he knew what he was doing wearing his fluffiest robe, bringing the first tooth their son lost.

He arched into the kiss, trailing his hand down Lan Wangji's chest, moaning when Lan Wangji pulled on his hair, forcing his back to arch.

"Diedie, baba."

They broke apart, breathing hard. Wei Ying was flushed down his neck, Lan Wangji could feel his own ears warm.

"In the office baobei." Wei Ying called. He pretended to stretch, arching his back in a salacious display of bare chest and legs. He smiled at Lan Wangji, kissing him quickly before he fixed his robes.

A-Yuan, dressed in his dinosaur onesie, came into the room holding the large rabbit plush Huan-ge bought him for his birthday last year.

Wei Ying lifted him up, setting him in his lap, Lan Wangji wrapped his arms around both of them.

"Baba, look!" A-Yuan smiled at him, he was missing two teeth now. He held the other tooth, still bloody, in his hand.

"Ah my poor baby!" Wei Ying hugged A-Yuan tightly, Lan Wangji plucked the tooth out of A-Yuan's hand, adding it to the drawer with the other one.

"It didn't hurt diedie." A-Yuan managed while he was squished against Wei Ying.

"Still, all that blood."

"Baba, diedie's being silly." A-Yuan sighed, much too mature for a child his age.

"Mn. He is." Lan Wangji freed A-Yuan from Wei Ying, holding him close. "You are growing up. He is happy to see it."

Wei Ying was staring at them the same way he did when Yanli-jie came by with A-Ling.

A soft face unable to believe sometimes that he got to be a part of something this warm.

"Do you know the Wen rites?"

There was rites for every Jiaoren Clan when a child lost their first set of teeth, each one as unique and different as the Clans themselves.

"I know some stuff. I know when his Hunting teeth come in he's supposed to make his first solo hunt. I could ask Qing-jie, she might be willing to share, even if they aren't from the same branch."

"I will inquire with Wen Qionglin as well. He might be willing to share."

Wei Ying smiled at him, wrapping his arms around A-Yuan "See, we can do this."

Lan Wangji kissed his forehead, "We have been doing well so far."

A-Yuan snuggled down between them, laying on Wei Ying's chest, with his legs over Lan Wangji's arm.

"Aiyah, he can sleep anywhere. Let me get him back to bed so you can work."

"No." Lan Wangji held them both tighter, "Stay."

Wei Ying stared at him, a bit surprised, "But…your compositions.."

Lan Wangji pulled him as close as he could get without disturbing A-Yuan.

"They can wait a few minutes."

Wei Ying beamed at him, he held A-Yuan, snuggling close, tucking his head under Lan Wangji's chin. Were he a cat, he would have been purring.

Not for the first time was Lan Wangji grateful he'd spent the extra for the larger desk chair. Rolling back slightly so he could rest his feet on the ottoman, he held his family.

Uki's voice was a bit raspier because of sleep.

"The light woke me up, I can't go back to sleep but I'm tired," you gestured to the open window, a cool breeze coming through it. Uki let out a breathy laugh, snuggling closer to you. It was quiet in the room, the only noise coming from the window, which was just a gust of wind. A small humming noise caught your attention, and you realized it was coming from Uki. "Are you comfortable?" you asked, voice soft. You felt Uki nod agaist your chest. "Should we wake up Fulgur?" "No," Uki shook his head. A yawn escaped your mouth as you tried to stifle it. It was a bit frustrating, not being able to fall back to sleep.

You heard the rustle of bedsheets, turning to your left, where the noise came from. Fulgur rolled onto his back, eyes wide open. He took his hand, rubbing his eyes slightly as he tried to rub the sleepiness from his eyes. "Y/N? Uki? You two are awake?" "Yeah, we can't go back to sleep," Uki huffed. Fulgur just chuckled, leaning down and giving both you and Uki a kiss on the nose. You smiled up at Fulgur, yawning again. "Why don't we all go get something to eat?" Fulgur asked. "Okay." Uki and you answered simultaneously. You rolled out of the bed after Uki, not caring whether you fell on the floor or not.

"Woah!" Fulgur exclaimed, barely catching you with the help of Uki. "Are you okay?" "No," you grinned sleepily. "I'm tired." "Coffee?" Uki asked, walking towards the door. "Yeah, I need some coffee. Maybe espresso?" you suggested. "Should we order breakfast?" "Sure, why not? How about Starbucks?" The three of you continued your talk of breakfast, forgetting how tired you all were and instead enjoying the lazy morning comfortably together.

First meet

The prompt: Wangxian meeting LXC's and his spouse's firstborn

Wei Wuxian walks anxiously through the jingshi, drawing imaginary circles all over the place with his steps. His hands are folded behind his back, but his fingers still wring against each other, betraying his nerves.

Lan Wangji would try to comfort him if he wasn't restless himself. He's been sifting through the same book for the past two or three hours, unable to focus.

"Why's it taking so long?!" Wei Wuxian bursts, tired of the silence and his own thoughts spiralling. "I wonder, did something happen? I know Ming Xiang's pregnancy has been difficult, but... it's been over 10 hours, why haven't we received any news?"

"I've asked the doctor to let me know when something happens, good or bad. No news should be good news."

"Except it's not! Do you know how many things can go wrong in childbirth?! It's terrible, she could even die!"

"Wei Ying, I don't think that is the case. We would have been told."

Wei Wuxian sighs, frustrated. "I just want to know or nephew or niece is okay... This is nerve-wracking!"

"It is, but we shouldn't be so-"

There's a knock at the jingshi's door and Lan Wangji springs to his feet, nearly knocking himself over as he runs to open up. A disciple that can only be described as happily distraught manages a half bow and hurriedly says, "Come quickly, lady Ming has given birth to twin boys!"

Lan Wangji nearly knocks the disciple over as he runs out the door, and it happens again when Wei Wuxian follows. They all but fly their way towards the lanshi, and only when do they arrive at the door reality hits them.

They're uncles now! They're going to meet their niece or nephew now!

But they can't just barge in - this is an intimate moment, perhaps Lan Xichen and his wife want to spend it together without outside interference. Perhaps they should wait to be called in or -

The door opens to reveal Lan Xichen beaming, a smile so bright it nearly lights up the night. "Come on in, A-Xiang was just about to send me after you."

Suddenly, both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian feel incredibly small as they walk in. The lanshi looks the same as always, yet it feels different - it feels different with Ming Xiang's soft voice humming a lullaby as she lays in the bed, two bundles of embroidered blankets in her arms.

There are bags under her eyes and her updo is more mess than hair - but she looks so softly, so lovingly to the little ones she's holding that she appears otherworldly, a goddess among mortals, the primordial image of Mother.

Wei Wuxian's eyes tear up, but it is Lan Wangji that cries first, two rivulets of tears falling symmetrically down his face at the image. A step behind them, Lan Xichen himself struggles to hide his tears.

Ming Xiang smiles, tired, proud, relieved, motherly. "Looks like you'll both get your very own nephew."

Wei Wuxian laughs, wetly, as he approaches the bed and tentatively sits on the edge. He sees his own mother holding him, he sees Jiang Yanli holding Jin Ling, he sees A-Yuan's mother holding him - he sees all mothers there, in the image of Ming Xiang, and there is a knot in his throat that refuses to dissipate.

He looks at the two babes, snuggled in their expensive furs and silks, so small and vulnerable, so very precious, so long waited on.

Lan Wangji joins his husband's side and Lan Xichen stands at the foot of the bed, looking on at his family, now whole. He hasn't even realized, until today, he has been missing something.

Two little somethings.

"Would you like to hold them?" Ming Xiang asks, her voice barely above a whisper.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji nod all too eagerly, and Lan Xichen takes the cue to help his wife hand over the two little boys.

She makes a relieved sound. "They're so heavy... Those pregnancy cravings fed them well!"

Lan Xichen watches as the two hold his sons like they are gold incarnate, their touches delicate and fearful. He shares a look with his wife, a discreet smile between them, until-

"He's moving!" Lan Wangji exclaims, overwhelmed and uncharacteristic, eyes wide as the baby in his arms opens his eyes and lifts a tiny hand towards him.

"Of course, he's moving." Wei Wuxian replies, gently rocking the other one. "Babies tend to do that."

Lan Wangji smiles, warm, his fingers gently adjusting the blankets around the little boy. "Mn."

The baby seems to be analyzing Lan Wangji, blue eyes scanning over his face before his little nose scrunches as if in disapproval, and he closes his eyes to sleep again. Wei Wuxian's heart leaps at the adorable sight and he knows he wants this for himself too, for both of them.

He turns to look at the baby he's holding himself, sleeping soundly, and can't help running a finger over his plump cheeks. He knows he'd die - again, over and over - if his little nephews asked, he'd turn the world upside down and sideways for them. He'll be the uncle he never got to be for Jin Ling, he'll be the uncle he wished he had himself when he was younger.

And so, on that cold winter day, Lan Yichen and Lan Haoyu were born, the future Twin Jades, the pride and joy of their parents and uncles, the hope for a future as bright as their father's sword and as beautiful as their mother's smile.

(And as spoiled as Hanguang-Jun and the Yiling Patriarch could get away with.)

Kay's comments: One of the first fanfics I read after I finished watching CQL and reading the book. This one is another The Untamed canon story, but this time, it's not post-canon, it's a canon-divergence story! This time, Wangxian actually talk as soon as Wei Wuxian gets resurrected and wakes up in Gusu. Very sweet, very much emotional hurt/comfort. I still adore this story very much!

MDZS Fanfic Pet peeve: Drunken sex

I don't like it when people write WWX and LWJ having drunk sex and then WWX immediately regrets it later and runs away because he thinks he took "advantage" of LWJ's inhibited state . The pining angst is just downright painful to read sometimes, and the separation period afterwards even more so.

(see chapter 232 of the manhua or Exiled Rebel Scans Chapter 98 Longing(6))

In the manhua, (basing this mostly in the manhua.) WWX was perfectly fine snuggling and kissing LWJ in his sleep.

It was LWJ who visibly rejected WWX at that moment when WWX said "Thank you" LWJ thought WWX was thanking him for the physical intimacy (which LWJ did not want their relationship to be just about give and take) instead LWJ misunderstood that thanks when WWX was about to confess!

Only then did WWX spiral into a depressive mood thinking he took advantage of LWJ, furthering the misunderstandings by saying that it was "normal" to do things between friends to spare himself of his feelings that he thought he misplaced.

The same could be said about LWJ. I recall some fics that portray LWJ regretting his drunk escapades thinking that he took advantage of WWX during his own drunken state. Then he too would run away leaving WWX. Making WWX think that LWJ regretted what happened between them and we're back to square one. Again, in the book/manhua LWJ was half asleep content and aware to be in WWX's arms I don't think he suddenly just got sober that instant WWX said thank you.

So yes, if it ever came down to a drunk first time sex WangXian would have gotten together much earlier if it wasn't for LWJ's misunderstanding not just WWX's. Give my Sunshine Boy a break he is obviously thrilled to share intimacy with LWJ in any context as long as LWJ physically shows to be accepting and reciprocating afterwards. People who are thinking of writing a drunken first sex scene between WangXian please don't make it anymore angsty than it should really be. It was fun to read once but now it's a little too repetitive and almost everywhere.

Oblivious!LWJ tag should be more common than Oblivious!WWX. But in truth they are neither oblivious. They just have piles of misunderstandings between them in canon. So this tag really shouldn't exist unless people really like giving them this personality trait.

When his mind flays him in the quiet of dreams. When he recalls the thirteen years of absence only to wake in his arms, his presence throughout the Jingshi undeniable.

Papermen scattered throughout his desk, his papers always a mess, empty jars of Emperor's Smile. Gusu Lan Robes in his size on the floor where he dropped them after he crawled into bed, snuggled into Lan Wangji’s arms.

Tonight is the Moon Festival.

This high in the mountains, autumn ended weeks ago, winter’s chill settled in for the long duration. Wei Ying has already bundled into his cloaks and stolen two of Lan Wangji’s own.

Normally they would accompany the juniors down to Caiyi for mooncakes, festivities, and making sure no one got too sick or drunk. But with Xiongzhang fresh out of seclusion, he and shufu took those duties for the night, freeing Lan Wangji to spend a quiet evening with his husband.

A letter on the Jingshi’s doors directed Lan Wangji higher up the mountain, unactivated papermen stuck to bamboo or trees guided his way up a grassy hill until he saw large, ornate chiminea burning marrily.

He could feel the warmth of the fire as he drew closer to the circle marked by glowing flowers, no doubt something Wei Ying created.

“Lan Zhan.”

Wei Ying fell into his arms, pressing kisses all over his face until Lan Wangji caught his chin and kissed his lips.

He forced his mouth open, pushing his tongue deep inside, tasting mooncake, Emperor's Smile, and roasted nuts.

Wei Ying, sometimes, acted like he did not believe he got to do things like that. His face flushed adorably as Lan Wangji pulled away, he laughed, eyes dancing as he pressed gentle kisses along his chin and down his neck.

“No, stop. I have a plan for tonight and you’re distracting me with your sexiness.”

Lan Wangji felt his lips turn up, “Apologies.”

Wei Ying pretended to frown, but he was smiling too much to make it effective.

“Not you’re not.”

Lan Wangji hummed his agreement, pulling Wei Ying into his arms again, kissing his forehead.

When A-Yuan first came out of the sick rooms and Lan Wangji could care for him alone, he could not stop kissing the child. In relief that he made it, in grief that the last thing that connected him to Wei Ying did not remember him. And to ensure A-Yuan never questioned that he was loved.

He felt the same urge each time he held Wei Ying in his arms.

Grief that he was gone for so long, a connection only one of them remembered, and so Wei Ying knew what love was. What it felt like. So he never questioned it.

“Come, come, I have plans for tonight.” Stepping out of his arms, Wei Ying slid his hands into one of Lan Wangji’s, pulling him completely inside the circle of flowers.

The world around him shut off.

The birdsong, the cicadas, or crickets. The rustling of undergrowth from the rabbits, or moles, nore the distant booming of fireworks.

“Tonight is just about us.” Wei Ying led him over to the chiminea where food was laid out on a dark wood table that he must have had the juniors bring up the mountain, complaining the entire time of his ‘poor’ and ‘feebable’ back.

There was a rug laid down for them to sit on, large enough for them both to lay side-by-side if they so desired. His husband was not subtle.

All around them was the dying grass of the hills, the low fog of the clouds, and the autumnal colors of the leaves. The reds, oranges, yellows and browns, all in varying stages of decay. Falling from the tree to preserve its life through winter, rotting into the soil to provide roots that created them. A cyclical pattern of birth, life, and death. A poem, a tale, a lesson written into the fabric of the world around them.

Rebirth.

Second chances.

He breathed in Wei Ying’s scent, rain-water and spices mixed with sandalwood and the fresh mountain air.

“Lan-er-gege, Lan Zhan, husband.” Wei Ying fell into his side, Lan Wangji put an arm around him, Wei Ying filled his tea cup, plucking out a small orange leaf that had fallen into it. “You’re too in your head tonight.”

Wei Ying’s eyes were dancing in the light of their fire, “I want you to see something.”

“I never tire of seeing it.” Lan Wangji told him. He traced the contours of his face, his finger circling around his bold smile, once gone from the world. Death. Returned. Reborn. A different face, but the same smile.

Wei Ying turned red, burying his face in Lan Wangji’s robes.

“Stop it, stop it, stop it.” His fists were ineffective, not that he was trying to be.

“Warnings Lan Wangji, you must give warnings.”

Lan Wangji stroked his hair, his fingers catching in snarls and knots that he gently worked out, kissing the top of his head.

Wei Ying emerged, no less red. “I wanted to show you the sky. Tonight's special.”

Dutiful husband that he was, Lan Wangji turned to the sky.

He could see the dazzling stars above them. Stars across the sky as far as he could see, vanishing over the horizon to the west and east, to the north beyond the mountains, stretching further than Lan Wangji had ever traveled.

One fell across the sky, from the east to the west, a streak of light there for a brillant moment before it was gone from his sight.

It was the first, several more came after, sometimes a handful all at once, more came faster, faster still until the sky was a nothing to streaking light falling across stars.

“There’s a legend in Yunmeng.” Wei Ying said, his voice low and reverent in ways he only got when he was in shrines, or on anniversaries. He played with the braided white bracelet around his wrist, a gift from A-Yuan and Wen Ning, a subtle way to mourn the Wens, Wen Qing and Jiang Yanli.

“They say a falling star is the sign of a birth or death of someone important.”

His hand tightened around Wei Ying’s waist.

Wei Ying snuggled closer, kissing his neck.

“I’m not going anywhere. Lan Zhan, I promise. I just wanted to see tonight and think…hope I guess, that Shijie and Wen Qing were reborn. Maybe not tonight. Maybe not soon, but on a night like tonight. Where the stars fall and their births are marked as important. Because they are.”

Lan Wangji kissed his temple, holding him close.

“A star fell from the sky the night you returned.”

Wei Ying jerked his head to look at him, “Really?”

He hadn’t marked it as anything imporant, he’d been watching the sky in the event of a flare from the Juniors, praying he didn’t see it, but comfortable in the knowledge that he wasn’t far away if they did.

He had seen it fall shortly before the flare went up.

“But… I was hours alive at that point.” Wei Ying said when Lan Wangji told him.

Lan Wangji captured his husbands hand, kissing the center of his palm like he’d done once to Lan Wangji in an inn months and months ago, teasing him, pulling at his control, tempting the truth from him.

Wei Ying’s breath hitched, Lan Wangji kissed his wrist, biting gently.

Wei Ying shivered, his breathing picking up.

“I do not question the gods.” He pushed Wei Ying to the carpet, “They returned you to me, that is enough.”

Autumn turned to winter as stars fell.

When they were both three, they declared to an amused Lan Xichen that, “When we’re grown up we’re gonna marry each other! We even promised!”

Neither remember this, Lan Xichen never brings it up, and honestly it’s a saving grace that Jiang Cheng was only two at the time, because if he knew then Wei Wuxian would never hear the end of it.

(Lan Xichen will, however, finally bring this story to light during his Best Man’s speech. Lan Wangji all but hides under the table.)

Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng have a habit of sparring whenever Wei Wuxian gets fitted with repaired upgraded automail. Lan Wangji will watch them on the porch, arms crossed and eyes critical, to make sure they don’t break his work again and that everything moves as it should.

At least, that’s how it started out.

Recently, when he watches, his brain chants happily: Biceps. Biceps. Biceps. Biceps.

It’s very unhelpful.

I’ve mentioned before that some of their biggest arguments are based around Wei Wuxian’s dedication to sacrificing anything to get Jiang Cheng’s body back, but once that’s over and done with, a new kind of disagreement emerges.

On the one hand, you have Lan Wangji, who has been all but single-parenting Sizhui (and then also Jin Ling) with the occasional visit from Wei Wuxian.

And on the other hand, you have Wei Wuxian, now permanently home, trying to parent as well and going against Lan Wangji’s techniques and rules.

Contrary to popular belief, Lan Wangji won’t let Wei Wuxian walk all over him, and while he agrees that letting Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling wander the surrounding countryside will do them some good (accompanied by Fairy, and sometimes Jiang Cheng), schoolwork and automail lessons and cooking dinner and doing their chores are equally important and he will not budge on their established nightly routine of bath, book, bed.

These arguments aren’t really shouting and yelling, more hissed, tense conversations behind closed doors.

Everyone debate in the tags: which brother has is worst?

Or Jiang Cheng, who has to put up with Wei Wuxian's utter obliviousness?

What I’m saying is that after the post-we-got-our-bodies-back saga Wei Wuxian is in bed one night snuggling Wangji with Sizhui curled between them and is suddenly struck with, “Wait. Holy fuck. This is a Thing.”

There is a very, very painful year after the two FINALLY become an official couple where Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian don’t really know how to function or how to progress the relationship.

Because their previous bet came to an end now their brothers have Figured It Out, Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng have make a new one: Who will propose first?

Jiang Cheng wins this bet. I won’t say on who.

Ok but in all seriousness let me gush about their wedding.

It’s autumn. Resembool is awash in beautiful hues of red and deep orange. The fields are full of crops, ready to be harvested. The summer months are still lingering, but there’s just an edge of crispness to the air to signal cooler times ahead.

Lan Wangji wears a white suit with a delicate embroidered silver trimming. He stands out like the glowing moon against the autumnal colours, his hair neatly combed into its natural parting (He spent three hours fussing and panicking over it before his brother intervened.)

Wei Wuxian wears a black suit, his long hair braided into something more intricate than his usual style - one that, Jiang Chen will realise with a lump in his throat, mirrors their sister’s on her wedding day. He has red pins in it, the same shade as the small leaf motifs decorating his shirt collar.

Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng are both in mauve. Lan Sizhui is the ring barer, a duty he takes very seriously. Jin Ling is only allowed to bring Fairy as long as he keeps her on a lead.

If you think Wei Wuxian doesn’t orchestrate it so when he throws his bouquet (red roses), Jiang Cheng catches it, then you do not know Wei Wuxian. 

Jiang Cheng is going to fucking send him back to the gate of truth fuck off Wei Wuxian!!!

Lan Qiren bakes the wedding cake. Later, when the festivities are underway, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng will sneak away and place a slice on Jiang Yanli’s gravestone. They will also visit the site where their house once was.

The next morning, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian leave by train for their honeymoon off by the coast.

Unknown to Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen, they both have a bet on which of their brothers will cry as they leave first.

They both lose when Lan Qiren bursts into tears.
