The previous day's mid morning start saw a more relaxed 69km/1370m ride to a quiet if rather midgy woodland bivi. I ended up wearing my headnet all night but slept well. Before turning in I spent 15 minutes watching a shrew bustling about me on his evening business; I was so outwith his experience and perception that, sitting quietly on my tree stump, I simply didn't exist in his world. Wise words there, kids, we can all learn something from that.

The lightweight bivi bag I've been using lately is a Snugpak Special Forces XL that I bought last summer. I think of it as 'water resistant' rather than 'waterproof,' viewing it as a sleeping bag cover for nights when I'm expecting light showers or heavy dew. I'd use it with a tarp if the forecast wasn't too apocalyptic.

Unfortunately, while this XL model is long enough, it doesn't have the internal volume to fit a mat, hence the old Oookworks groundsheet (the bag material isn't tough enough to use under a mat in any case). I've tried out a few bivi bag solutions now - and nobody's making the design I actually want: tough lower groundsheet, lightweight breathable upper, torso zip with a decent storm flap, couple of peg points to hold it in place, big enough to slide the mat inside; doesn't need a total head closure, because if the weather's that bad I'll be rigging up a tarp. That's why I flip flop between this bivi bag and the Stratosphere hooped bivi; between them they cover the extremes of the middle ground I'm seeking.

I went with this set-up in case a storm passed through during the brief night. The small tarp pitches tight with six pegs, low end pointed into the wind, with my rucsac leaned against the short carbon pole to block draughts. It gives good coverage to my head and torso, with just my legs sticking out inside a lightweight bivi bag. I'm a little sceptical about exactly how waterproof this Snugpak Special Forces bag is but I like the chest zip and, coupled with an old Lamina 20 synthetic sleeping bag, it's kept me comfortable in some pretty grim weather. If there'd been a higher probability of rain I would've rigged the tarp longitudinally to give more coverage (but less headroom and storage space).
