Wow. Ok. So.
That was a pretty satisfying end, I gotta admit. The important threads were tied up pretty well, while still leaving questions to be answered in the next book.
It was most interesting to see how Tessa has grown over the course of the book, and I can't wait to see how much further her character can grow in the next book. I love love loved the way the rebels started listing all the ways Tessa has helped each of them, that she really had made a difference like she wanted to and that they're appreciative of what she'd done. It was great. I like how Tessa is such an earnest character as well, so very much opposite to the majority of the characters from the royal sector, and I'd love to see how that's going to play out in the future as she explores her role as advisor to the king and her role at the forefront of change in the kingdom.
Corrick was a delight to read about but he still clearly has some things to learn (I mean, really, he'd convinced himself so thoroughly that he and his brother never hid who they were, he actually believed it. That self hatred cuts deep and I'm thinking it's gonna be a good long while before he sees all the way through those lies and accepts that he's worthy of a second chance). I'm very curious to see how he's going to go forward now that he's no longer beholden to the position of King's Justice as he thought he was.
I loved how we got to see more of Harristan nearer to the end: he is the king, after all. Besides seeing him involved in all the politics and displaying that yes he is a capable king and he truly is trying to do the best for his people despite despite despite- besides all that, which really was delightful to read, it was also really really nice to see him interacting with his brother and getting sassy snappy with Tessa and even Quint.
Speaking of, love Quint, what a character. Truly the best of friends. AND ROCCO! What a guy, he really went babysit the royals? I guess so. I mean look at all those choices he made that saved their asses many times over, and in general just made things better. Great character, love what you do, man, keep it up.
Now, I would have liked to see Tessa dealing with the fact that she killed someone a bit more thoroughly, and just all the carnage she saw in general because that stuff was not pretty and I think all of it was worth a little meltdown or at the very least more of a looking back at it as a traumatic experience rather than the very fast way it seemed like she moved on from things.
Also Karri and Lochlan????? That threw me for a loop to be completely honest but moving on.
I really, really wanna see Tessa dealing with the trauma of everything she went through here in the next book. I mean come on. Within a very short span of time she
killed someone for the first time ever
got kidnapped by people she used to call friends, people that she's helped for so long
watched those people mob and obliterate the guy she's in love with
stitched up her lover in the rebel camp -you know, the camp of the people that just beat him up- while knowing that he's not unconscious like he's pretending to be and she so very badly doesn't want to hurt him anymore than he's already been but, but
sat in a cell for an entire day with no food or water or any clue as to what's going to happen next, fearing the worst
is forced to make a truly difficult decision in front of the king, a man she is terrified of
finds out the Moonflower petals in the palace aren't truly moonflowers and that someone might be tampering with their supply
escaped out of a burning building teeming with rebels that are out for blood
is called to be a liaison between the king and the rebels but there's not much she can really do, is there? they're not listening, they just want the king dead and medicine that no one has, questions she can't answer and then they kill another person right in front of her, they don't care to listen they just want blood
And anyways, yeah, I think that's more than enough to be considered a very very traumatic experience that would leave a lasting impression in her psyche and I want to see her dealing with the consequences of that.
But yeah, great book, a truly lovely read, and I'm excited to get my hands on the next one!
A great many thanks @softbobamilktae for the recommendation, it was quite thrilling and I'm so very glad to have read it!

Hello! Hi! I see that you are an avid book reader and I am here to kindly ask for book reccomendation reccommendation recommendations. I at long last have some time to return to the wonderful world of reading and I very much long to hold a book in my hands and get lost, but alas I cannot find one that piques my interest. You look to have good taste and I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
Yours sincerely,
Snurt
P.S. <3333333
P.P.S. Why is "recommendation" so hard to spell?
Hello friend! You don’t know how happy seeing this made me! 😆
Be warned this is going to be a long post because I read a lot of books last year that I loved…so…yeah…
I feel like I need more to work with than just “give me a book rec” butttt 🤔 I suppose we can make this work
I mostly read fantasy but I assume you knew that since you follow me 🤨👀
(Unless mentioned otherwise these are all trilogies or duologies)
If you like puzzle games I’d definitely recommend The Inheritance Games 😌 I thoroughly enjoyed that trilogy and it made my puzzle mind go brrrr
As for fantasy, I have quite a few to recommend
If you’re into classic fae (as in…darker stories I suppose) I’d recommend The Cruel Prince and These Hollow Vows. They both have deeply romantic undertones but they’re more heavily focused on the politics that the stories revolve around.
*The Cruel Prince also has two novellas that go with it and a sister duology about the main girl’s younger brother, so if you’re looking for a world to get immersed in and keep reading, I’d seriously recommend reading that entire world.
If you’re looking for more whimsical fantasy I’d recommend Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart. They’re sister series that are semi-connected and they both have very immersive fairytale vibes. These two are heavy on the romance aspect but they also have great plots that carry them!
If you’re into low fantasy where there’s a bit of magical element in the plot but it’s not overwhelming, I’d recommend Six of Crows and Defy the Night. Both of these books have amazing plots but they focus more heavily on the relationships between the characters and how they trauma they’ve experienced has shaped their personalities. Six of Crows is a lot heavier of a read, so if you’re looking for something lighter, start with Defy the Night.
If you’re looking for fantasy that’s just a bit fun, I’d go with Assistant to the Villain. This book was very silly and fun while also dealing with serious topics. It was, however, to my dismay, a trilogy with only one book out…so…be warned.
If you’re into dragons and war colleges I’d recommend Fourth Wing, but keep in mind that this one has smut and lots of swearing. Despite the fact that this is one of my favorite books, I give this recommendation very loosely because of the content in it.
As for standalones, I have a few great recs:
- The Forgetting
A sci-fi (?) mystery about a city where everyone loses their memory every 12 years. Lovely characters and great plot.
- The Half-Life of Love
Absolute tragedy of a story that you know will end awfully from the start but you read it anyways and then sob your eyes out.
- Greymist Fair
A paranormal Brothers Grimm-esque collection of related stories. The town of Greymist Fair is very enchanting, and the way the stories all tie together is so much fun.
- The Stars We Steal
This was sci-fi and I read it in 2020 so honestly who knows what happened in it but I remember really enjoying it 🤷🏻‍♀️
If you want to see everything I read last year and my reviews of it all, you can go to my 2023 reading recap
I also have a short list of sappy modern romance novels if you’d like, so send me another ask if you want those too! This post is too long already 😆
P.S. I think recommendation is so hard to spell because it sounds like it should have multiple double letters…hence why I say “recs”.
P.P.S I love the way you type. Very eloquent and lovely use of words.

BTS Mafia AU Fic Recs
Tumblr media
So. Here’s a collection of some of my favorite mafia au fics in the BTS fandom, accompanied by some fanart for each fic. If you like mafia aus and BTS, you should definitely definitely check these out, they are A M A Z I N G.
Young Spy by @jeonstudios - Jungkook x reader, Jungkook is the spy and he’s been caught... barely conscious, Jungkook is saved by reader, but does he realize that he’s been saved? mmmm, this story had me mesmerized from beginning to end. Sometimes I find myself still daydreaming about it, my mind just keeps on coming back to it and boyyyy its a good fic, i love it so much, you should go give it a look and shower this author in some love!!
How to Sell Sunshine by @alpacaparkaseok - (to be revealed) x reader, Reader is a mafia boss building herself an empire, and to do that she gathers the forces of seven members of different skillsets and backgrounds. Will they make it, or will the pressures of this world tear them down?? eeheeheeheeeeee this series is EVERYTHING, the intrigue, the badassery, the snark, and the crime, everything you could ever want in a mafia au is in here, go read it, and then go read everything else on this author’s masterlist IMMEDIATELY. do it.
Edge of Tonight by @park-jimin-isnt-real - Namjoon x reader, Namjoon and reader have known each other for a long while, but then reader went missing. Namjoon built himself an empire and suddenly... his team catches a glimpse of reader, jaded, dangerous, and ready to kick ass. ASKJDGEHFJHSAGDKJA THIS SERIES. This Series, ooohhhh boyyyyy, this series is Absolutely Beautiful. Not only is the Namjoon romance sweet and heartbreaking, reader’s interactions with every other member are so meaningful too, it just. feels,,, so good. GO READ IT. SHOW THE AUTHOR SOME LOVE FOR THEIR MASTERPIECE
The Web by @btsmosphere - Jimin x reader, Torn away from everything she’s held dear, reader is on the run and scared for her life. And yet, still, she stands up and throws herself into a web of lies and question marks. Will she find her way back to Jimin before it’s too late? ...Does she want to? I WILL NEVER STOP SPREADING MY LOVE FOR THIS SERIES, IT IS BEAUTIFUL SHOWSTOPPINGLY GORGEOUS 10/10 GOOD FIC, The Inrigue, The Build Up, The Final Confrontation!!! This author is amazing and their writing style is so cool, definitely check out their masterlist after you read THIS WHOPPER OF A FIC IN ALL ITS BEAUTY
Cry Me A River by @minniepetals - OT7 x reader, As the daughter of a mob boss, reader has been destined from the beginning to be a pawn. She is married off as such to Bangtan, and there she learns what love is. She also learns just how much it hurts, how easily it can be taken advantage of. 10 years later, the soft girl has grown to become something much more..... the ANGST OOOHHHH BOYYY OHHHH BOYYY, it’s. it’s heartbreaking, but it hurts SO GOOOOD NNNGHHHH. We’ve been promised a happy ending so I’m keeping my eyes out for that but so far it is deliciously agonizing to read and yet so utterly delightful. This is another amazing author, go check out everything they have to offer!
Between the Bloodshed by @agustdakasuga - OT7 x reader, Reader is a private doctor, and her services have been hired by quite the rowdy group of men. What she wasn’t expecting to find was a world of pain and crime... and perhaps, love? SUCH a good fic, so many feelings, so many cute lil scenes AND it’s got SEQUEL which is just as amazing. Go forth, enjoy the scrumptious, scrumptious story.
If I can never give you peace by @candlewaxandp0lar0ids - hybrid!Jungkook x reader, Jungkook is the hybrid of a mob boss’s daughter. That is, until she gets tired of him, and he gets forced into an illegal fighting ring. It falls upon reader to handle his fights, keep it all organized, and it falls upon reader to “get rid of him” when the mob boss wants him gone. Only, she lets Jungkook escape instead, and it’s all good. But then he comes back, and he wants to build an empire of his own. THIS. STORY. IS. SO. GOOD. I don’t really know how to describe my love for it without getting repetitive but its suuuuch an amazing enemies to lovers, such good tension and interactions and just sagdhfjfjahf it’s great, go check it out and see for yourself what a great fic it is
Here’s each individual drawing (+my lil artsy comments) if y’all wanna see them better:
Young Spy (not taken from any specific scene, but I thought this shows the general vibe of reader (also im sorry about the shoes))
Tumblr media
How to Sell Sunshine (you know that scene where reader is dancing with Jimin and practically asking to be shot? yeahhhhhh..... also this is lowkey the best drawing of a lady in a dress I’ve ever made??? im real proud of this one)
Tumblr media
Edge of Tonight (badass reader yes pleeeaaassse!! Also I’m kinda proud of that title illustration)
Tumblr media
The Web (I tried making her ruffled like she’s in the middle of a fight but I don’t really know how to draw bruises so a couple cuts and ruffled hair is whatcha get, k? K.)
Tumblr media
Cry Me A River (okay, it doesn’t specifically say reader wears a dress in the fic, but I think this is such a reader pose after the badass upgrade, you know?)
Tumblr media
Between the Bloodshed (I don’t?? really know? how to draw a doctor coat??? I tried but i dunno if its the right vibe... hmmmmmm)
Tumblr media
if I can never give you peace (the face turned out a lil too warm and doesn’t quite give off cold vibes, but y’know what? that was a tough pose to draw, so im givin myself a pat on the back)
