Since Hadestown is in Atlanta, I went to go and see it last night. Here are things I noticed during the Hadestown performance while watching all of the actors/background actors because I've never seen it live before despite knowing the soundtrack.
-Ophrues rolling and tearing up a piece of paper into a flower to give to Eurydice
-hades and Persephone drinking and playing a game while waiting for her to leave.
-when Orpheus Is singing epic 1, Persephone stands on a balcony like she can hear him and is basking in the sun for a moment, but when she looks back at Hades her smile fades.
- during living it up on top, Persephone gives Hades a kiss on the cheek before leaving, and Eurydice hesitates In taking off her coat and dancing with the others before Persephone pulls her in. She pours some of her flask into Eurydice flask and even takes her to dance. After Orpheus makes the toast and everyone drinks all but Persephone shutter at how strong it is.
-during all I've ever known, Persephone looks longing at Orpheus and Eurydice (he has the kind of love for her, that you and I once had)
-while Persephone is gone, Hades reads the paper.
- Orpheus and Eurydice are still holding each other until the end of way down Hadestown, when Eurydice pulls away during "kinda makes you wonder how it feels" and she makes eye contact with Hades, who lowers his shades to took at her. Orpheus jumps between the two, and Persephone angrily pulls her hand away from hades.
- During Chant when Hades said "think of it as my desire for you" he attempts to brush Persephones cheek but she pulls away. During the sequence leading up to "the gods have forgotten the song of their love!" hades and Persephone are on opposite sides of the revolving stage with the workers of Styx between them, symbolizing the wall between them. Hades reaches out in frustration from the other side of the wall, but Persephones turns her head. At the end of the song when Hades said "think of It as my embrace of you" Persephone was so upset she slammed the doors
- the rattling in songbird vs rattle snake are coins that Eurydice put over her eyes
-while they were in the underworld, Persephones always kept her distance from hades, standing rather stiffly.
- there were no background characters on stage during our lady of the underground (they were probably getting ready) it was just Persephone and Hermes sneaking around and having a drink behind Hades back and laughing.
- During the way down Hadestown reprise, eurydice and Fates are the only ones standing and when she goes through the motions of swinging the pickaxe like the other workers do she looks horrified and in pain as if her body is doing it against her will. Each time the workers make the chinking sound with her teeth she sinks lower and lower to the floor
-during the chant reprise all of the workers stood up whenever Orpheus speaks but they dropped back down to the floor whenever Hades spoke. There was also a point in which all of the stage lights got brighter and brighter until they eventually all went out at the same time when Hades yelled "I conduct the electric city!" it was really fucking cool
-during how long whenever Persephone is singing the lights were blue and whenever Hades sang the lights were red and when they were singing In Harmony towards the end of the red and blue lights turned on
-during epic 3 the workers fully regain themselves and they started to take off their work equipment as they sang. When the workers chimed in during the lalala's Hades quickly ran towards them and then made a slashing sign at his throat telling them to cut it out because part of him refused to hear the song that he forgot. But when he finally did hear it and he started to sing it Persephone was obviously overjoyed and she finally made the motion to reach out to him first.
- after Hades grew the flower when singing the la la Persephone put it in his front pocket on his vest. I forgot the name for it but it was still super cute. Also during the "And they danced"scene Persephone started to twirl Hades But realize that he was too tall so instead they did a shimmy. This version of Persephone was a very chaotic in one the best ways and she always had a lot of energy except for when she was around Hades however she regains her energetic dancing style around him after they make up during this scene.
-during his kiss the riot when Hades was lamenting what to he dramatically approached Orpheus and eurydice, and Orpheus tried to protect them by using his guitar as a shield. There is also a point in which Hades tried to walk away to clear his head but he backed up when the fates stopped him emphasizing that he had to make the choice now.
- during wait for me reprise Hades is still deeply annoyed by Orpheus and he takes his pic out of his hand and flings it across the stage just to be Petty.
-during doubt comes in whenever Orpheus would sing the lalala's the fates had lanterns that would light and then fade out in the beginning and then eventually they wouldn't light at all showing Orpheus losing hope.
-during the road to hell reprise when Hermies said "spring had come again" eurydice pulled the flower out of her pocket this time without Orpheus giving it to her.

SBI HadesTown AU That Lives In My head Rent Free
(in fact I probably pay it to live there)
Links at the end under the cut.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starring:
• Dream, George, and Sapnap as The Fates  • Philza as Hermes • Wilbur as Persephone  • Technoblade as Hades • Tommy as Eurydice
and
• Tubbo as Orpheus
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes to the story -
Instead of spouses, Wilbur and Techno are estranged brothers.
Instead of lovers, Tommy and Tubbo are best friends.
The focus is still on restoring balance to the world but through familiar and platonic love instead of romantic. Also, the reason the world is so bad is a more social crisis (some people work too much while others can’t work at all) instead of a natural one (the seasons being wack.)
It takes place during a seething summer drought rather than a frozen cropless winter but its still the same tune of spring/fall disappearing because the the world being out of tune.
Character Changes -
+ Philza is an old god. He’s not weaker nor stronger than Wilbur/Techno, just fills up a very different role. He’s god of history, of legends, of simple stories and narration. He’s very human compared to most gods, some theorize perhaps he straight up IS human in some way shape or form. He lives a human life to meet people and collect their lives and stories and appreciate them. He can’t really interfere as more than a mortal man but still just tries to give as many happy endings as he can.
+ Tommy’s a scrappy lost child. His problem is similar to Eurydice but a little inverted. Rather than learning to trust people he needs to learn to value them. He’s no issue with interacting with people and enjoying their help/company but he’s a tendency to use them. He doesn’t believe they’ll stick around so he doesn’t bother caring about them.
+ Tubbo is also an abandoned child. Unlike Tommy he grew up in one spot, although still homeless. Philza found him camping in a crate box behind his station and gave him a job and a bed. He’s pretty much exactly like Orpheus, optimistic, sees the world for what it could be instead of what it is, but maybe spends a little too much time looking forward and not around.
+ Technoblade is basically the god of work and motivation. His problem is generally the same as Hades’ in that he misses his family and is too busy working and building security for what he wants to get what he wants. He misses his brother so much he’s hardend himself to the reasons they’re apart so much in the first place.
+ Wilbur is basically the god of play and rest. In this AU, instead of Hades, Persephone’s role is the biggest reason the world is out of wack. His problem is that he doesn’t face his problems. As the god of such frivolous things as music, games, rest, etc. he is (feels) weak and useless. He’s jealous of Techno and how needed he is so Wilbur retreats away to somewhere he feels needed and wanted, entertaining miserable people. He’s stayed away for longer and longer amounts of time, not realizing his distracting them from their troubles (inadvertently preventing them from fixing them) is a reason they’re so miserable in the first place. All he can do is have a good time so he’s begun forcing it every second of every day and ignoring his brother in the meantime. He needs to learn that he CAN do good, people NEED breaks and fun, but recklessly enforcing it only enforces what he fears, that he’s a liability.
So, the main problem is a cycle the brothers have spiraled into:
Techno does obviously important things (stirring progress and improvement) and Wilbur feels bad, unimportant, and like a burden.
Wilbur leaves Techno to go distract himself/play with the humans.
Wilbur becomes useless and detrimental without Technoblade there to balance him out.
Techno works even harder, becoming empty and cold without Wilbur there to balance him out, trying to get enough work done so Wilbur won’t have to worry and will come back.
Wilbur sees Techno working so hard and shies away even more so as not to disturb his brother’s important work.
Technoblade has to basically force Wilbur to stay with him now, making it more work.
Wilbur sees Technoblade as both too important for him and now generally unappealing as unnecessary effort. Besides, he’d probably just get in the way.
Technoblade now sees Wilbur as just another part of his endless job. Keep people working, keep things improving, keep the numbers going up, try to keep Wilbur here. Its become work for the sake of work instead of work to the sake of rest.
So even when they’re together neither is relaxed enough to balance the other, both are distant.
Wilbur’s become too carefree, he ignores Technoblade and drops anything that seems challenging, including reconciliation and self-examination. He’s still just playing, even when with Technoblade.
Technoblade’s become too obsessed, focusing more on how to get and keep his brother with him than on being with his brother. The work has become meaningless without the end goal that Wilbur provides. A self sustaining cycle of labor for more labor’s sake.
Now the humans are suffering because they find themselves trapped in an unbalanced cycle of being either incapable of work or incapable of play.
Thematic notes:
- The dancers in the station during the first half are Skeppy, Antfrost, Bad, Eret, and Puffy.
- The workers (the dancers in the second half) consist of Niki, Fundy, Quackity, Ranboo, and Awsam.
- Tommy is implied to vaguely know/be brotherly to Techno and Wilbur, this is partially how Techno convinces him to leave and go work for him.
- Likewise, Philza has a few lines about feeling sorry about how Techno and WIlbur have ended up (implying he took some part in raising them) and already knows Tommy when he enters (implying he’s been a dad to helped Tommy out before.
- Technoblade is less malicious than Hades, more just cold and apathetic. In a way, he thinks he’s helping by pulling Tommy away from Tubbo. He, like Wilbur, believes that work is good so more work must be better, even if you’ve nothing to really work towards. At the end he listens to the fates because needs to figure out how to let Tommy go without undoing either all of Wilbur’s power or all of his.
- Tubbo’s song has a bigger impact on fauna than floral, specifically insects. His first song brings out bees, butterflies, and moths that Tommy goes all star eyed for because pretty bugs but more importantly, living things that don’t want to hurt him!
- Instead of a flower Tommy gets a big beautiful orange moth (named Clementine) that hides in the back of his coat neck whenever Technoblade is near. He remembers in ‘Flowers’ when he goes to wipe some sweat from his neck but its Clementine and she flies around him while he sings. (I thought that’d be much prettier than him just holding her like Eurydice holds the flower.)
- During ‘Living it Up On Top’ Wilbur dances specifically with Philza (who greets him very much like a father might greet a son who’s been away for a long time) and Tommy (who he teases and ruffles his hair a lot).
- Wilbur does drugs instead of alcohol. He... he makes a lot of drugs so I thought this would be an appropriate swap. Also it’s really funny to me that he sings Our Lady Of The Underground (or, Brother To The Underground) just completely stoned; handing out weed and shit to the workers.
- Instead of a mine Hadestown (Technotown? Technoville?) is a farm in a giant glass case built way up high. Instead of going through the dark that challenge is Tubbo has to climb up its side to avoid the train. Its an unnatural and unwelcoming greenhouse. Everything grows in lines but they’re mismatched and overrun with thorny weeds. Everything is grey and tough and flavorless. There’s so much dust and dirt being kicked up it’s hard to breathe and see. The workers are using various gardening tools during the beats instead of swinging a pickaxe. Half will sharpen while the other half swings (tilling the ground/cutting weeds), it makes a real nice schwing/thunk mix sound.
- During ‘Word To The Wise’ George sings (“if you tell them no you’re a heartless man”) Sapnap sings (“if you let ‘em go you’re a spineless king”) and Dream sings (”here’s a little tip”) and (“men are fools, men are frail”)
- Tubbo still looks back during ‘Doubt Comes In’ because he's scared of Techno and feels bad about himself (“Who am I? Who am I to think that he would follow me into the blazing heat again”). Techno, Wilbur, and Philza try their best to take care of them but it’s still a tragic ending.
- Tommy and Tubbo may or may not become (very sad and minor) gods. Unofficially and not in the story, but still... maybe. If they WERE, hypothetically,  they’d be a very tragic pair. Tubbo would help mend relationships and guid people towards good advice while Tommy would help catch/ignore/cut out bad ones. Always working together, never together.
Lyrical Changes
> Pronouns are changed, obviously.
> Techno and Wilbur sing “brother” instead of “lover.”
> During ‘The Wedding Song’ (The Friendship Song, I do not care if it’s childish, Wedding is replaced with Friendship) They sing each other’s names instead of “lover.” (Tubbo, tell me if you can...////Tommy, when I sing my song...)
> Anytime they’re complaining about the cold winter replace it with a hot summer
> Tommy’s lines are much sharper. He never loses his edge with Tubbo. Instead of him remembering him and going “my best friend, Tubbo” he remembers and says something more along the lines of “that fucking idiot, Tubbo” but he’s say it with a quivering smile and bittersweet tears in his eyes. Harsh in words not in tone.
> Wilbur still pours a glass for a toast during ‘Living It Up On Top’ but the rest of the time he’s smoking something instead of drinking. (Who gives breaks when the work is hard?//That's right, Wilbur Soot!//Who makes the music? Who’s your bard?//(Wilbur Soot!)//Thank you//Who makes a rough life fun again, in spite of a pig//(You do!)//Who’s the most awaited gig? Eh? Wilbur Soot, that’s who!)
> When Wilbur shows up during ‘Chant’ he complains about how cold and dark it is. (Colder than a tundra) Techno explains it away as having set up shades/coolers to counter the glare from the sun through greenhouse glass and how he did it to protect/comfort Wilbur. (Brother when you feel that chill, it’s my protection from the kill, its my protection that i’ve built for you.)
> In the Chant Reprise the workers are singing about why they’re working if they can never enjoy the security and safety they keep making. Technoblade, instead of telling him to buy Tommy’s love, tells him to make himself needed. He, instead of warning Tubbo about Tommy leaving, scolds Tubbo for being too light and fluffy and spinelessly letting Tommy go. He scolds him for trying to take Tommy away, back into uselessness and empty fluff, when he’s found a good purpose because clearly Tubbo wasn’t point enough.
> Philza’s still the narrator, but diegetically his lyrics show more clearly that he knows everyone in the story already. I really like the idea of him giving Tubbo advice on making friends that gets shown in ‘Come Home With Me’
> When Tubbo sings about Techno, instead of singing about minework, he’ll sing things like ((from the second stanza of Epic II) “Technoblade, king//of power and pain//of a hard days work//that never ends//and for half of the year when Wilbur’s away//the strain and the stress just won’t give way//he thinks of his brother, light and carefree//and is taken in a rage of obligation and need//to ensure wants are met and safe//so there will be time for play//so his bother//his brother comes home)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This post all started because I was thinking of Tubbo singing the “La lala laaa” that was originally Wilbur’s song.
Also, I realize this entire AU is just one big punch in the gut to Philza, like, “HEY, ALL YOUR SONS ARE SCREWED UP, NOW SING ABOUT IT.”

She’s a regular at his main shop, and is cute if a few years his junior. He offers her a deal she can’t refuse. Age gap. Extra cookies for accidental toastbaby and falling in love. [submitted by anonymous]
Prompt 35: No reaping AU. At 19, Katniss considers marrying Gale for practical reasons; the fact she just heard the baker’s son toasted and was assigned a house at the edge of town has nothing to do with it... maybe. What happens next? (was Peeta really married or was it his brother? Does she marry Gale? Does Everlark ever talk? Will Peeta cheat if he’s actually married? Can Katniss admit she loves the Boy with the Bread? Is this forbidden love?) is up to you. [submitted by anonymous]
Prompt 36: Frustrated and stressed out Single dad!Peeta needs a fuck desperately. His best friend, Katniss, unwittingly offers to help him out. Things get murky with repressed feelings, but one thing’s certain, Peeta can’t keep his hands to himself anymore and Katniss is all too willing to oblige at the drop of a hat, regardless of place, time and her own emotions, as long as he keeps whispering all his sexy, filthy thoughts into her ear. [submitted by anonymous]
Prompt 37: Not-Reaped, In-Panem AU where Peeta and Katniss have begun quietly seeing one another. It is very early on and they are really only just getting a bearing on how deep their feelings are when one day Katniss sees Peeta beat by his mother and no amount of will power will stop her from going and confronting the witch. She goes in there on a war path but stops when she sees just how hurt Peeta is this time, with open gash on his leg from when he had fallen to the ground... [submitted by anonymous]
Prompt 38: Everlark inspired by Netflix's Spinning Out (But honestly I believe it was the other way around!) [submitted by @justhereforthefanfiction]
Prompt 39: Taylor Swift - Mary’s Song (aka childhood best friends to lovers to husband and wife) [submitted by anonymous]
Prompt 40: No choice - friends Katniss and Gale must wed to become legal guardians of siblings. Still not enough to avoid financial ruin. But how to find him or her, how to negotiate terms, does she confide in anyone, how should she prepare, will it all be quick and forgotten as she hopes, what could go wrong, can she keep this secret, can she use a fake name, can she hire a service? [submitted by @567inpanem]
Prompt 41: Inspired by the dancing kid meme. A video clip of either Katniss/Peeta as a child becomes a huge meme. How do they handle it? Maybe it gets them together? Maybe it’s creation tears them apart? [submitted by Buttercupbadass]
Prompt 42: Every time there’s a really bad storm, a bolt of lightning precedes Katniss getting transported to another life. She’s always Katniss with all her memories, but everything around her is different. Peeta is always there, she just needs to figure out if he’s friend, foe, stranger. And, damn it, the storms this spring with global warming sometimes has her in and out of situations before she can figure anything out. Gale complicate things further. It’s enough to drive her crazy... [submitted by @567inpanem]
Prompt 43: Katniss post-war becomes crazy cat lady, dedicates herself to caring for every stray, calls them all Buttercup, don’t get along with Haymitch’s geese. Now does Dr Aurelius make a house call? [submitted by @567inpanem]
Prompt 44: Believing that taking a new young bride every 5 years will keep him youthful, Snow arranges to marry wife #12 from D12. In the hours between the ceremony and the wedding night, he drops dead. 16-yr-old Katniss returns to 12 but now she’s “Widow Snow.” Can she ever be Katniss, district huntress again? With all that $, wedding gifts, etc that were sent on the train with her? [submitted by @567inpanem]
Prompt 45: Prompt has been removed.
Prompt 46: Pacific Rim inspired AU with drift compatible Everlark (or not if you’re inspired by angst). I really just want to see more of that aspect of Pacific Rim explored than what they did in the movie and what better way to do it than with Everlark! [submitted by @katnissdoesnotfollowback]
Prompt 47: katniss and peeta have a one night stand after meeting at a bar. when katniss visits her gyno turns out peeta is her new doctor. [submitted by anonymous]

things that happened at hadestown last night (in no particular order)
- after if it’s true, seph goes up to orpheus, cups his cheek really gently, then walks away.
- orpheus was cranked up to an eleven throughout the whole show. when he said his little toast in livin it up on top, he was so excited that his voice cracked on the first syllable so the entire “to the patroness” section was delivered at a pitch that only dogs should have been able to hear.
- he always started singing in a whisper, though. really quiet, really timid, and then got progressively more confident in his abilities as the songs went on.
- the candle downstage center is the only light source on the whole stage at the end of road to hell, so all the audience can see after the song ends is this tiny flickering flame and then it goes out.
- orpheus had to hold onto himself once she was gone or else he wouldn’t have been able to kneel upright. when she was fully out of sight, he exhaled like all the air was being sucked out of him at once. it was such a SAD SOUND
- the amount of times orpheus and eurydice make out during way down hadestown is RIDICULOUS. god i wish that were me
- i was super stoked for papers, and when it started, i realized that persephone watches the whole time. in the beginning, every few beats she would look like she was going to put a stop to it, but she never did, and eventually just gave up and did nothing but stand there.
- when orpheus went on his knees for come home with me, his whole fuckin body was VIBRATING,, he was so excited,,
- when orpheus asks hades whether they can go or not, hades is still holding persephone, but once he says “i don’t know,” persephone rips away from him in disgust and goes to stand next to orpheus.
- in road to hell i, it looked like orpheus was clapping just slightly out of time and it was ADORABLE
- we really got to see the fates’ different personalities. clotho (yvette) was super playful and smiley the whole time, teasing orpheus and eurydice during the beginning of epic iii and any way the wind blows respectively.
- orpheus was completely WRECKED during doubt comes in. i know he’s supposed to be, but oh my god. jewelle passed by behind him and he JUMPED. there’s one point where eurydice goes to reach for him after her first verse and he goes to cover his ears and continue the dying lalalas. it was PAINFUL.
- john and afra’s workers are ADORABLE. during epic iii they were holding each other’s hands and john had afra pressed to his side. when hermes said “do you trust each other?” in wait for me ii intro, john glanced at afra, even though she didn’t look at him back.
- the only jewelry persephone wears is the black choker, and that directly corresponds with hades’s “hang a chain around her throat” line in chant ii.
- when persephone said “let him finish, hades,” it was different. instead of saying it for orpheus’s sake, it was like she was saying it for her own sake. it was her moment of selfishness in which we saw her glare at her husband as if to say “give orpheus a chance because I need to hear this. if this is the last time i ever hear this boy sing then you are NOT going to ruin it for me.”
- everyone took a sip of seph’s wine during livin’ it up and then making faces and looking at each other like this shit is DISGUSTING
- hermes went up to eurydice and let her bring his hand to her face, where she stayed and closed her eyes for a second, but then he walked away.
- eurydice reached for orpheus in when the chips are down, but the fates blocked her.
- clotho teases orpheus in the beginning of epic iii by giving him his guitar and then pulling it away really quick, then giving it to him for real, all with the BIGGEST GRIN ON HER FACE
- at the end of lover’s desire, orpheus has gone back to eurydice, but hades steps towards them, and IMMEDIATELY, orpheus steps in front of eurydice with his arm up to protect her. there’s a beat, and then hades steps back.
- persephone’s “YOU’RE EARLY” was not surprised at all. it was delivered in more of a mocking tone, like “what the fuck else is new?”
- when eurydice was singing gone i’m gone, orpheus smiled down at his notebook from the side of the stage. it created this wild dissonance between them; eurydice is literally starving while orpheus truly believes he’s doing the right thing. he believes that everything is going to turn out okay. he genuinely cannot see the extent to which eurydice is suffering.
- in the last part of a gathering storm, eurydice goes over after saying “finish it” and kisses orpheus’s shoulder, but he barely notices.
- when eurydice asks “is he always like this” in chant, hermes doesn’t answer, he just points at orpheus and raises his hands.
- “the girl means nothing to me” came out really fast and defensive, as if it was really a response to persephone using the past tense for “he has the kind of love for her that you and i once had.”
- hades was barely able to get his lalalas out through his tears at the end of epic iii and persephone had to keep wiping her tears away she was crying so much.
- orpheus was so BOUNCY?? like he jumped SO MUCH. he SPRUNG to protect eurydice from hades in way down hadestown after she said “kinda makes you wonder how it feels.”
- persephone just sat and watched flowers.
- when she came up in why we build the wall, eurydice looked at persephone and she put out her hands as if to calm persephone down. she was trying to say “i made my choice. it’s over.”

hey all so i just saw ‘hadestown’ and feel duty bound to tell you fools everything about it because i, too, remember what it is to be lonely and on the internet and too poor to see some snazzy broadway shit
there’s no fanfare or anything. the show opens with all the cast coming on—and obviously the audience is going buckwild, especially with amber gray. (u can tell there’s a lot of great comet fans in the audience.) only once everybody is settled does hermes really TAKE THE STAGE.
and boy does he take it. sassy lil shit knows he owns it and just stands there taking in his audience, before flipping his jacket back with dramatic flare (to show his SNAZZY-ASS SILVER THREADED VEST) and starting to sing. (cue noisy wah-wah trombone.)
the setting is p. clearly a bar; orpheus p. clearly works there. he’s like being artsy with the napkins and shit, blossoming them into roses. eurydice is a traveler; she carries with her, wrapped in brown silk, an alter candle that she lights. (after sassing hermes into giving her a match to light it with.) eurydice balances her candle with the paper rose orpheus later makes and gives to her.
orpheus is pretty childlike and dreaming in this version. (not the cocky boy from the off broadway production.) he comes off as kind of lanky and awkward and not quite there; naive is definitely a defining adjective for him. everything about him is soft and gentle and in a dreaming world.
eurydice is kind of a classic tough girl but she’s got a strand of helplessness to her. she puts on a show of not being impressed by orpheus until he sings her the song he’s working on, and manages to bring a rose into his palm.
environmental collapse is a HUGE theme thru this—bigger than i thought it would be. eurydice’s first lines are about how there’s no spring or autumn anymore; everything is winter or summer, too hot or cold to live. the fates sing of the winds—the fates sort of torment her throughout this—but climate change looms as a dread through the show. orpheus hopes his song will bring back summer, put the seasons back in tune.
anyway, everyone’s hanging out at a new orleans style bar. even hades and persephone are there, though above it all in a balcony of their own
did i mention bradley king is a god among lighting designers?
because that will come back a lot
anyway hermes is sort of an uncle figure to orpheus; he was friends with orpheus’s mother, a muse. as soon as orpheus sees eurydice he wants to talk to her, and hermes advices him not to ‘come on too strong’—
and well that plan goes immediately out the window : ‘come home with me!’ [eurydice: ’what?’]
orpheus is just intensely awkward. skinny pale child doesn’t know how to interact with the world
they have kind of an argumentative relationship from the start—they don’t face each other very often; there’s a push and pull as he longs for her and she, kneejerk tough girl, tries not to go for this. but the rose from his palm enchants her, and she holds on to it. ‘you have to finish your song.’
GODDDD AMBER GRAY IS JUST LIIIIIIIFE. her persephone is a total lush and frequently staggers through act 1. she also has a fabulous white coat that gradients to green at the sleeves. when she dances you can’t tell if she’s about to pass out or float up to the ceiling.
when orpheus gives the toast he’s just so awkward it’s appalling
(and everyone toasts except eurydice)
hades wears sunglasses when he comes to the world above to bring persephone back to the world below. he descends from his balcony to get her, and brings her to the center of the stage—and then, oh, SHIT, there’s a fucking perfect round trap door right where they’re standing, and they descend below. (amber gray looking up to the slowly disappearing sky with the face of a martyr who’s used to the gig.)
winter’s hard. eurydice has to bust back out her old ass coat (instead of the winsome black slip thing and brown vest thing she was wearing), and the Fates, bitches as they be, try to fuckin rip it off her. (and succeed. the choreography looks like wind! also chairs and tables looked like they were floating earlier but i forgot to mention that.)
eurydice is trying to get ORPHEUS’S FUCKIN ATTENTION bout the fact they got no food and, uh, three bitchy old ladies dressed all in gray just took her coat, but he’s submerged in writing his song to bring back the weather. and while this is all going on, hades and persephone are having their age-old argument about how hell is too hot and too loud and IT AIN’T RIGHT, IT AIN’T NATURAL.
because, get this, after descending to hell they descended /back up/ into it, and u can tell cuz the lighting is fuckin genius. i’ll explain later except i won’t.
orpheus is just OUT OF IT and not hearing anything at all eurydice is tryin to fuckin say. (the tune keeps going wrong.) hades is sick of persephone not being with his electric shiny no-good shittiness and lays his eyes on eurydice as easy prey.
he puts on his sunglasses again and u know it’s bad news.
he talks her over and gives her her ‘ticket’—two silver coins that she momentarily holds up over her eyes as she looks at us, letting us know that this is some death imagery. she holds both hades’ coins and orpheus’s flower—and, making up her mind, calls out orpheus’s name one last time and descends into the underworld through that same miraculous trap.
and then, fuck me, the trap comes back up but just the red flower is on it. fuuuuuck meeeeeeee i may have wept.
orpheus finishes his damn song and hermes lets him know that hE FUCKED UP HIS WHOLE DAMN LIFE SHE GONE, BITCH, and orpheus sees the flower on the trap door and then he’s weeping, too.
and then we get to ‘wait for me’ and holy shit, y’all, i never been so fully into something in my life? it was so physically intoxicating i almost wanted to throw up. like, wonder as a liquid beverage. tHE LIGHTING? ? i fuckin felt awe on this earth today, i saw god and he’s lit by bradley king.
because! hades’ workers bring on these industrial metal lamps, and they hook them to the wires in the ceiling, and they SEND THEM SWINGING OUT INTO THE FUCKIGN AUDIENCE. they fuckin—they—they they they!—they fucking did! that! sent them swinging out in perfect rhythm and time, fully lit, swinging around orpheus and into the audience. and tHEN! THE FUCKIN SET! BEGINS TO GROW!!!
remember the first time u saw the nutcracker as a child and the growing christmas tree fuckin ripped ur world apart? it’s like that except times ten thousand
like it felt like. like the fuckin world was coming apart. the bar set is slowly ripping open and golden light is just searing into your eyeballs and the golden lamps are still swinging around orpheus and it literally felt like god had opened up a cold one and was just singing something horrible into being. it was wonder. i want to see it again.
like. stagecraft, babyyy
and u think act 1 will end on that because why would it nOT but no, we get ‘why we build the wall,’ which is a sort of chilling propoganda thing where everybody is facing forward and just telling back to hades whatever he’s yelling about, and persephone is there and i’m not sure why (like does she believe this? is she the unwilling consort? what’s the deal?)
and at the end eurydice comes in, and sort of picks up on the gestures everybody is doing—in that way everyone does when they come into a room and they want to vaguely pass as with it so they try to sync in to the general vibe. ‘uhh sure everyone’s waving their hands and talkin about walls so i guess i will too’, that kind of thing
hades shows her up to his office (the balcony door) to sign the papers. as soon as he’s gone, amber gray whips round to face the audience. ‘anybody want a drink?’
it’s intermission and i’m still trying to catch up on all the gasp-crying i started during ‘wait for me’
we also get an overpriced hadestown cup cuz get while the getting’s good, right?
back in act 2 and it’s our lady of the underground, ie amber gray in her exact outfit from above except instead of lurid green it’s savage black. (and instead of a bouncy curly brown wig it’s a black sparkly snood.) she dances and pivots and rivets her way through it, introducing the band, being winsome savage bite-your-face-off-and-offer-to-share-it-with-you amber gray. she’s got a neat little ring-shaped silver flask that hangs from her hand like a purse, and i want one.
eurydice emerges from the office dressed in the same overalls as the other workers—though she looks sexy af in them, ngl—and sings ‘flowers,’ and talks about how nobody down here looks at her, and how it’s like they don’t even see her. the underworld is not what she thought it would be. she wants to go home but can’t. she can’t remember orpheus’s name.
uNTIL HE SHOWS UP! Punk ass bitch made it, somehow, and stumbles onto the stage with guitar in hand. she knows his name immediately. but she can’t leave, because she signed her soul away.
u knew all this. it’s classic myth. did i mention patrick page as hades sounds like the combined harmonics of every rumbling truck on the george washington bridge every time he decides to sing?
orpheus has A Moment™ where it’s like, if this is what the world is, if people sign their names up for shit and i can’t save them, i guess i’ll just go home. but he talks himself out of it (apparently his magic vocal cords work on him, too), and actually talks himself (and the stone workers of the underworld!) into activism.
amber gray and patrick page share a duet i’ve never heard before, and it’s fine, and i think it still needs fine tuning cuz im not sure exactly how persephone feels about hades in this bit. it’s fine. what matters is that at the end of it, hades is FUCKED because rebellion is brewing.
he gets orpheus to sing his song. and holy shit, is it a doozy. holy shit, but were we all crying. hooooolyyy shiiiiiit.
holy shit.
when hades sings the refrain at the end, amber gray looks like she’s experiencing the most visceral, exquisite, heartfelt, heartbroken pain of her life. she literally bends as if she’s felt this pain in her stomach—this pain, this anguish over the song she hasn’t heard for so long from this one man she loved so well.
and when a rose blossoms from hades’s palm, persephone is both crying and laughing. it’s like the old times have bloomed again.
and then they dance.
also, should have mentioned earlier, it’s implied it’s not an og song orpheus is singing; he’s actually stumbled on an ancient one, perhaps one hades used to sing, and THAT’S why it’s so devastating—not just his talent and voice, but the memory of it, the memories it brings back. it’s an ancient song, almost a spell, that can heal the seasons.
hades and persephone hold each other close, nuzzling almost, and eurydice faces orpheus, and for a second u think it’s going to be ok because eurydice is so joyful and persephone and hades have healed. o & e  think they’re gonna leave. they think everybody can leave.
but nope, hades can’t have that. damned if he does, damned if he don’t—so he sets the test for orpheus, but u really get the sense that he’s not doing it from a sense of cruelty any more. it almost pains him to do this shit. but the rivet of steel in his character won’t let himself become king of nothing.
hermes presents the challenge: ‘ive got good news, and bad.’ orpheus keeps asking hermes if it’s a trick; hermes keeps saying it’s a test, a trial. (it’s really a TRAGEDY.)
persephone is wooed by the fact that hades even let them try.
ugh, doubt comes in is. devastating. every single person in the audience audibly gasped—u FELT the air leave the room—when he turned around. we all genuinely believed it would end differently this time. we thought it would. i knew it was coming and i still was DEVASTATED.
eurydice is, too. she started as the doubter, and she had so much BELIEF they were gonna get out of this. ‘it’s you—it’s me—’ she says. she’s already sinking through the trap. fuckin hell, they were on the last few steps. i’m still fuckin emotional about it
orpheus just crashes to the edge of the trap, staring down into the abyss. hermes is singing, softly, about how it’s an old song—it’s an old tale—it’s a tragedy. and then he roars—in a way that cheers me up—WE’RE GONNA SING IT AGAIN.
because that’s the power of it! it happened, it was horrible, but we’re going to SING about it—and maybe change the ending this time—the way orpheus tried to, when he sang his way to hades and sang his way to the stones. it’s the singing of the event that matters, that might matter.
and eurydice is back at the bar, wanting matches—orpheus is back at the bar, seeing her for the first time across the room—and the story goes on, like the seasons .fuckin incredible. everybody in the auditiorium now is tear-stained.
APPLAUSE APPLAUSE APPLAUSE
lasted for like.....seven minutes?? it took ages and the actors were just soaking it up, looking exhausted, because DAMN it is exhausting to chart anguish and joy and victory and determination and love in two hours and 25 minutes
and then hermes shushes the house—because of course he does—and amber gray leads the final toast. it’s acoustic—it sounded to me like she wasn’t even using her microphone? it wasn’t brash at all, just raw—and a simple, honest, kind of homespun way to end the show. and it finally ended, and we cheered one last time, and then we went home sobbing and shaking and wanting to do the whole damn thing again
it was great and the stagecraft was some of the best i’ve ever seen and i’ve literally felt maybe only 3 productions like this, where this emotional shit is actually sitting in your lungs, and u should go, the end

flower anon goes to hadestown and has a TIME
so there is no possible way for me to express my feelings and emotionsTM about Hadestown or my weekend in New York in an ask so I am sending them here. Just for context: I saw four shows in two days (my bank account is extremely pissed at me but it was worth it) and they were all special and phenomenal in their own ways. However, we do not have all the time in the world so I am just going to word vomit about Hadestown.
So it is Sunday morning, I am on 48th and I am seeing The Lightening Thief at 1 but I made brownies for the cast and crew (as well as a separate batch for Eva because last time someone bought treats to the show she didn’t get one) and I was unsure if security would let me into the theatre with the food. So I “stagedoored” Hadestown as the cast and crew were coming in for the morning. I gave the first batch to Kay and she was incredibly sweet and lovely. I explained that the brownies were in fact not full of drugs (I do not have the money for that!!) which she laughed at and then we went on our merry ways.
After Lightening Thief I had some time to kill before Hadestown so I went to dinner and when I walked back to the Walter Kerr they were stagedooring for the matinee show. I decided to wait and give Eva the batch that I made for her because I literally had nothing else to do. So Eva comes out and I’m at the very end so I am expecting her to come to me last (which is fine, I was going to see her again at the evening stagedoor!) but she STRUTTED down my way and I explained that these were for her and that I hoped she was surviving the two show day. She said that she had to give me a hug and of course I accepted. Then she complimented my top (which was leopard print) and exposed her neck tattoo and was like “they match!!” Eva was so lovely and then I left to let the people stagedooring enjoy their experience.
Fast forward a little I am sitting in the Walter Kerr and it is starting to come over me that I am actually here and about to see this show. Then the light dims and Andre came out and opened the show. Saying “aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight” back in harmony with the audience was indescribable, just as the actors were centring themselves for the show, I was centring myself for an unforgettable experience.
Now I am just going to transition into some notes about the show (i would do every song but we would be here a while, so I am just doing what impacted me the most/I recall):
The first trombone note played and INSTANTLY my eyes were misty oops
when Hermes is introducing everyone Orpheus was kind of fidgeting/extending his fingers in a very specific way and was a very cute and subtle way of expressing his kind of nervousness/anxiety/ticks whatever you want to refer to it as
The la la las hit so different live like holy shit the way the sound radiates around the theatre is magical and unlike anything else.
The first interaction of Orpheus and Eurydice had my heart soft and I was not ready in any shape or form for anything to happen to them other than love and happiness
At the end of Road to Hell when Hermes sings “we’re going to sing it again” Hermes WENT OFF. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous and the whole cast is like jazz handing at him and he holds it for an ungodly length of time and it was a legendary opening.
HEARING EVA LIVE WAS EVERYTHING i watched her with wide eyes and so much love in my heart like i didn’t realise how intense the sound would be in a live space. I dont know shit about how sound and mics work but man like it is so different live the whole show I had chills.
Come home with me and wedding song are so fucking tender and horny like god i love this couple so much i had a bad seat for watching Eurydice drop her coat shoulder when she tells orpheus if he wants to take her home he better werk but the teasing tone in her voice was iconic and his little breathy hitch got me like isahdfsdhflhdf
During living it up on top when Eurydice dances with the workers chorus she did the Leg KickTM and I felt blessed
also during his toast Orpheus’ voice broke when he said “To the Patroness” and it was the cutest thing in the world i love my nervous son
All I’ve ever known was the first song to make me cry cry, it is just so sweet and such a special depiction of love and really hit home for me. it says a lot about me that the tender and horny song is the one that broke me. When the leg thing happened I was unable to breathe for a moment
the tender horniess continues during way down, and i specifically watched the kiddos because I love to suffer. They start on a stool and orpheus kisses her neck while she taps the beat of the song on his thigh and theyre just so in love my heart could not take it. They move then to the centre of the stage and spoon and you can see Orpheus’ feet tapping along to the music here too.
Chant is so fucking sexy there is literally no other way to describe it, everything about the design and the way it is performed is so so so good like h o l y s h i t it is so good. However I hate Hades sunglasses and wish they were different because they just make him look like my racist uncle lol
Wait for me gave me a panic attack because i was very worried about bby orpheus getting bonked on the head but also THE LIGHTING IS SO SEXY the lighting tony was so well deserved i’m glad the american theatre wing did like at least one (1) thing right. Also i was full on crying at this point.
Why we build the wall…. powerful shit I watched persephone during this and her facial expressions tell such an intense story of love, hate, desperation, and drunkenness.
flowers rekt me and left me for dead. it was such an emotional performance and i personally resonate with this song a lot (haha thats trauma baby) AND THEN THE TRANSITION TO TENDER LOVING COME HOME WITH ME stomped on my grave. also orpheus ran right by me and i was like GO GET HER YOU LANKY FUCK
i usually don’t listen past flowers because self care and I was already an emotional mess so when if its true began i was full on weeping. I felt so bad for the people next to me, you physically see orpheus break down and it shattered me and then rebuild with the support of the worker and the hope become restored (but it isnt strong enough in the end (OUCH))
epic iii instrumental with the dance was just so full of young love hades and persephone just beam at eachother in this new wonderful way and once again, i was weeping because orpheus did it he la la laed the world back into tune and it is so tender and so full of love
EVAS BELT IN WAIT FOR ME REPRISE GOT ME FEELING ALL KINDS OF CRAZY i was leaning so aggressively forward in my seat i want to remember that sound FOREVER
doubt comes in was a really bad time. obviously i know the story but something about the show makes you hold on to all the hope in the world and I was literally sitting in my seat, my nails digging into the flesh of my palm thinking “cmon orpheus you know who you are you can do this hold on please hold on” AND THEYRE SO SNEAKY WITH THE LIGHTS IT GETS HOPEFUL AND THE SET COMES BACK TOGETHER AND THEN IT HAPPENS AND OH LORD i audibly gasped and the tears were STREAMING down my face and the face of the lady next to me who had no idea of the story rip to her man
i literally cannot recall any of road to hell reprise visually because my eyes were so messed up with tears but hermes voice was almost like a blanket coming to wrap me up and hold me again after all that hurt and hold on to the hope that it might in fact turn out next time we sing it
also i made an active choice to not listen to we raise our cups before the show and BOY HOWDY that was a choice because the moment it began the tears came once more and it was magical watching the audience (all standing, get that standing ovation) taking in the last little bit of magic that the show offers you and the feeling of hope and light that seeing a sunflower in all of its beauty brings.
after the show i stagedoored and was lucky enough to meet and talk with Cherie the SM (she called the show too so I felt rlly lucky) and she wished me good luck in law school then i met John, Timothy, Jewelle, Anthony, Kimberly, and of course Reeve and Eva. I might have cried on the train home and yeah it was just this absolutely incredible and life changing moment, I feel so lucky that I was able to go it was worth it in every sense of the word. Hadestown went above and beyond and I will hold on to the memories forever.

You all asked for another set of my trash human Hadestown hot takes so.....
I think maybe I should just start from the beginning and go from there, and sprinkle some details in when I think about them. And since you’ve mentioned before that detail is a good thing, I’m going to try really hard to articulate the 500 versions of “I can’t” and “She did that” and “UM” and “GIRL” Also as always, I apologize, but this is honestly a lot of Eva and Reeve heavy content. I love all of the cast, they are all so phenomenally talented and wonderful, but as usual my mind has chosen to hyper-focus on two things so this is what it is.)
(So. I’m thankful for this platform because before my notes were ALL “Um” and “Girl” and now you guys are motivating me to actually write what I’ve been thinking about non-stop all day on my one hour of sleep. So. Thank you! I went about labeling every song-and I actually end up having thoughts for every one, because I went back and listened through and wrote down what I could remember/the things I thought were relevant for the people that won’t be able to see it outside of the boot that literally everyone but me has at this point).
This is only act I. This is a loooooong hot take. This is a lot of Eva and Reeve specific commentary. This is just a lot of commentary. I think it’d be cool/beneficial/whatever to listen as you read? LOL thanks for coming to my actual, legitimate 5 page essay on Act I.
So. My overarching thought of the night (and, actually, I think I mentioned this when I was there two weeks ago too) is that Eva has been playing an incredibly soft Eurydice lately. Compared to when I was there for previews in April, or even back in August, it seems like each time I’ve gone back she just gets softer and softer, and it’s made me so incredibly happy to see her characterization grow. I do see Eurydice as someone who has been through a lot, and does have that tougher skin, and I think that Eva does a fantastic job in representing that in Any Way the Wind Blows. She keeps her voice strong and consistent, and has this look on her face that’s a cross between worry, wavering confidence, and just this tough shell of a girl who’s trying not to look like she’s given up. And this works so incredibly well when she meets Orpheus. Because I’m telling you, the flip in her demeanor happens in the most noticeably beautiful way during Wedding Song. But first, let’s talk about the fact that I’m not sure who decided that it’d be a good idea that Eva play with fire during this song, and aesthetically it’s just such a MOMENT to see Eurydice looking bored, head down on her arms on the table, eyes wide and uninterested/exhausted/hungry as she runs each of her fingers through the flame (and, at times, pauses to inspect the finger she’s just put into the fire, rub it against another finger or the table, and then begin her game again) I don’t know why this has become one of my favorite things about the staging but? I imagine this being something Eurydice just does sometimes to keep herself from thinking about how hungry she is, and it becomes a habit so that in the iteration where they both make it out of Hadestown and live happily ever after Eurydice just does this one time and makes poor Orpheus jump out of his skin worried that she’s somehow going to send herself back down by doing this. Because they still are walking on eggshells about the fact that they made it out and here she is playing with fire, LITERALLY. Okay, moving on....
So. What I like about Wedding Song live is that her speaking voice just. It’s a bit higher, softer. She still carries the teasing tone, but there’s just this incredulous lift in “is he always like this?” and a lot of laughter in “Oooh, he’s crazy.” and Reeve plays Orpheus so sweet and innocent that you can’t help but feel bad for this bumbling idiot stumbling over himself at this beautiful girl sitting there looking completely cool and collected. But. There’s a beautiful thing about the composition and balance Eva is able to maintain in that you can see that Eurydice is openly intrigued, but keeps herself guarded in a playful sort of way. Almost like she can’t keep herself guarded and wants to let her guard down. Her smile kills me over and over again during this scene. Again, Eva’s Eurydice has turned into quite the small, beautiful romantic and I just am so in love with everything that she has subtly changed and morphed, the girl is an absolute QUEEN.
Also, I can’t go any further without saying a big THANKS to Eva for making me cry the SECOND I heard her start to sing Any Way the Wind Blows and just continue that train all night long. What a fucking night.
Okay, so my favorite thing about Epic I is the sheer power that small boy Orpheus has in singing his la laas for the first time. I remember distinctly having the most goosebumps the first time I witnessed this back in April, and every single time it just. Leaves me breathless. And I think now that it’s been a few times, the goosebumps come from knowing how significant this melody will be throughout the show. But Reeve’s facial expressions as he sings them? Make you believe that la is the most important syllable in the dictionary. He closes his eyes and just feels the music and plays his guitar and he is just so phenomenally talented that WOW. Also my favorite small part of this song is that during my favorite line “with them the cycle of the seed and the sickle, etc.” he spins in circles while playing and singing and just. It’s the smallest amount of choreography that feels the most necessary, as if it’s Orpheus becoming so enraptured with the music that he has to move! And it’s in the middle of the tables that are in the “bar,” with the workers and Eurydice looking on and watching him tell this tale. It all feels so incredibly genuine-it makes you believe that Orpheus singing to the workers is something they’ve witnessed, almost something they look forward to when they come to the bar. I think it has to do with the fact that they’re all just watching him, intrigued but also settled in? As if this is routine, this is comfort, his songs are meant for them and for this little community he has. Even when he plays the first note of the Epic they’ve settled in and are sitting up watching him and listening intently. It gives his character a lot of soft power and dynamic without having to say anything, establishing him as an integral part of this life without so much as a word.
Uhhh Living it Up On Top is just my most favorite feel-good bop. Why? Because of the ensamble. Watching them dance is a blessing. It honestly feels like watching a fucking family reunion freestyle dance party every single time. You can physically see and feel how close this cast is; they make faces at each other, they laugh, and also this instrumental break included the Eva Noblezada booty drop which is EVERYTHING. And she also did a full leg extension kick this time which. Girl. Save some talent and cuteness for everyone else. I also find it extremely appropriate that during all of this kickass dancing and partying our boy Orpheus in all of his gangly, limbly qualities can be found sort of flitting around the stage, taking Persephone’s coat, then Eurydice’s, then putting things away and moving around giving out the cups to toast- like. It’s lowkey established in this scene that he’s 10/10 not the cool and effortless one in this relationship and is the cute small boy child. And I don’t know if that’s because I think that Eva’s really cool and charismatic and Reeve is a bit more shy in a crowd situation, but that’s 100% how this comes off to me/how I perceive the characterization and I’m here for it. And when the line “to the patroness of all of this, Persephone” came up Reeve was like 10 octaves higher than the cast recording, all squeaky and flustered. And then between that and his next line, he took a breath and smiled the big stupid baby Orpheus smile that makes him so charming-if you weren’t rooting for him before now you’re messed, but after the smile? And the high-toned, flustered rambling toast? Makes it impossible not to love him. (Also “to the world we dream about…” is my most favorite Hadestown quote so. I choked because every time I hear it, especially as genuine and sweet as Reeve says it as he looks out at the crowd, and then at the audience, is just. It makes you feel the reality that this show crosses with its messages and its story as a whole). And then after they drink their toast they all sputter and cough, and then the ending when they all sing “HOW ARE WE LIVING IT” it literally is so powerful and dynamic, I love this ensemble so fucking much. Their energy truly fuels the show. We are blessed.
OOOOHKAY CHILDREN BUCKLE UP FOR ME BEING DECEASED. Because All I’ve Ever Known? Um Eva, what the fuck? In a good way. In the way that the second she started singing I started crying immediately. Because I’ll say it again, she’s just become so soft and romantic that I can’t even handle it. The distinct memory I have from this song (where I literally almost hit my cousin because I went from heart-eyed staring with no breathing and my head in my hands like the stupid hopeless baby lesbian that I am to breathing everything in all at once and coughing a BIG cough of just. Literally just love.) During “You take me in your arms, and suddenly there’s sunlight all around me” Orpheus holds Eurydice with her back to him, and she opens her arms and sings about the sunlight. And I fucking SWEAR TO GOD the smile on her face. Like. Big, wide, eyes closed, you’d 100% fall in love with her the second you saw it too. I don’t know how you couldn’t. She just looks so incredibly happy and peaceful and this is the moment she completely drops her guard (although I’ll say that I believe a lot of it is dropped earlier along. But this moment is a transcendental experience) OH ALSO during the violin instrumental she literally does this like. Handstand split Over Reeve’s head that is so poetically beautiful (that entire choreography is, like. It really just makes the love feel so incredibly palpable, and the fact that this is the turning point of moments where suddenly there are NO MOMENTS where they’re not all over each other is just. It’s a moment.) And then they kiss and it’s flawless and I sob profusely at how beautifully done this entire choreography/moment/existence of two souls happens.
Way Down Hadestown also includes two of my favorite moments; Amber Gray dancing with her body at a 90 degree angle, head looking at the floor, and Orpheus and Eurydice peacing out and sitting to the side sharing a bar stool unable to keep themselves away from each other. Which. Is everything to the point where I literally told my cousin to watch them during this song. Because. His ear kisses (which. I hyperventilated about for like 3 paragraphs back in the beginning of October) are SO MUCH (so tender. So soft. The brushing back of the hair over her ears and the soft spoken words and the head on her head make me want to careen into an abyss and fall in love immediately) but I love them with all of my heart, he is so soft and gentle and it literally feels like such a moment being intruded upon that this is the way these two characters were meant to be played and I will accept nothing else. Also, Eva’s little minor chord, jazzy vocal moment during the last “way down under the GROOOOOOOUND is so beautifully done, I can’t believe she exists and just acts like it’s not a big deal that she can just. Be that good. And I also love the way that this moment is staged; Hades and Persephone are standing on the center turntable, and at those last few “way down, Hadestown, way down under the ground” after “kind of makes you wonder how it feels,” right when it kicks back into the faster tempo the turntable starts to descend. And there’s some fog, and they all stand and watch them go under the ground, and when Eurydice sings the last “way down under…she moves closer to the now hole in the ground and looks deeper, as if she’s so curious as to what is going on.
A Gathering Storm/Epic II I just like that in the OBC recording, Eurydice sounds kind of salty when she says “well, until someone brings the world back into tune, this is how it is.” But I think that it’s perceived more as a kind of matter-of-fact thing, as if watching Persephone descend has brought her back into her shell a little bit, set off some anxieties. She shrugs her shoulders and looks complacent, as if to tell him without as many words that she’s done this before, this is old news, this is going to happen. And when he says “he came for her too soon,” it’s rushed and quiet, but frantic, as if the entire weight of the situation immediately has been cast on his shoulders. And for the most part, that’s all I’ve got for him. The real superstar in this scene is the fucking imagery used to introduce the workers, and the symbolism of the workers AS THE WALL.  So, when he says “With a million hands, he built a wall” the workers ascend from the center turntable in that really tight knit formation we’ve all seen pictures of and it’s just. Watching them in their uniforms come up as he’s talking about this big, brilliant wall and the workers begin to move in unison, then begin their chanting???? The lighting changes, the entire feel changes just based on the workers chanting and really having this ferociously unified choreography. And the most intense facial expressions ever. And they move from the center turntable to the outsides, and then fucking Hades and Persephone come up when the transition happens to Chant and it’s. All you need to completely transform a set is the lighting change, the workers, and the turntable. It’s the most incredible thing to witness this and feel like you’re in a completely different place.
Also, I just always feel for Eurydice in this moment. Because. She’s trying so hard to communicate with Orpheus, who’s standing at the bar stool they’d had their moment at during Way Down Hadestown writing this song, and you can see that she’s trying to be supportive but when she says “is he always like this?” it’s just. Exhaustion. And she says it so much more quiet and defeated than she does on the OBC. It’s heartbreaking. Because at the same point you’re watching Orpheus struggle to write this song, closing his eyes and tapping his feet and just trying to feel and let that feeling translate him into the rest of this song but it just won’t come, and you can see his growing frustration in his furrowed brow and his closed eyes. What I noticed is that during Eva’s little solos “Trying to trust that the song he’s working on is gonna shelter us…” / “I’m trying to believe that the song he’s working on is gonna harbor me from the wind” She hasn’t gone up on the last little phrase like she does on the OBC, which is one of the things I find to be so powerful on the OBC. And it’s still beautiful, but I’m wondering why she’s seemingly been choosing to go down instead of have that little moment of vocal power. OH ALSO. When she says “Give that back! It’s everything we have!” Her voice was BROKEN. And by that I mean she sounded so worried and devastated that. It just. Her voice was cracking as she pleaded for the fates to leave her alone and it was so immensely wonderful, but heartbreaking. Because as she struggles with the fates and their winds, and they rip her possessions from her one by one, she shrinks further into herself as she tries to buck up and continue fighting. But you can see as each thing gets taken (her backpack, her coat, etc) she grows more and more devastated and frightened. And then when they take her jacket, and she has nothing left, and she sings “SHEEEELTER US, HAAAARBOR ME!” She’s on her knees with her head in her hands, rocking back and forth and it is torturous to witness because you just want to cry for her. And Eva’s such a fucking powerhouse that you can feel the raw emotion, the fear and the devastation, and it just consumes. It’s amazing to be broken by Eva Noblezada over and over again, and that’s what she does this entire show. She is phenomenal.
Hey, Little Songbird is a song I don’t really have a lot of notes for. But the one note I do have is that Patrick Page makes everyone so in awe and also slightly frightened or incredibly woke (the amount of small whispers in the audience that compare him to a certain man of political power are to be expected, but always are significant) He also just. Skeeves me out so much in this song, and Eurydice is so broken already that it’s kind of like. She’s resigned and having trouble making sense out of anything that life has just thrown at her, and she keeps going to hold herself because she’s cold and hungry and tortured, and she just. Honestly, she makes the choice seem like one that Eurydice had to make because she looks so lost and hungry and upset and unable to hold herself up anymore that the choice doesn’t seem like a misguided one.
When the Chips are Down If I could have as much talent in my body as these girls have in their pinky finger I’d be set for life. Also, now’s a good time to mention that I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Jessie Shelton step in as a fate and it just. It was a wonderful experience, that girl is incredible. I saw her in August as Eurydice and she did a fantastic job (my only note back then had been that her chemistry with Reeve hadn’t been as strong, but I loved what she did with Eurydice-making her more badass and thick-skinned and over-it and also I genuinely don’t think that the Reeve-Eva chemistry can be matched.) But the flawless nature of these three souls singing together and just. Being the shit-eating-grin, fun to fuck you up, take no prisoners voices inside of your head? It just furthers the interpretation that they are the voices in your head amplified, because while they’re sort of doing their mockery of Eurydice/pushing her for her choice/etc. she covers her ears at one point they’re taunting her and it just. It feels to me as they’re pushing her around that they’re the personification of the battle inside of her heart as well, and she can’t escape the turmoil.
Gone, I’m Gone Me crying because I knew Wait for Me was coming so I was digging through my bag for my tissues and gently laying some on my cousin’s lap. (she hadn’t done a full listen-through of Hadestown before either, so I just. Gently prepared her for what was to come without saying a single word.
Wait for Me Okay, how detailed can I go? I don’t know how to fully capture the immense, all-encompassing, my heart is literally stopped inside of my chest but also full-on beating heavy as possible feeling. The second the first notes started the tears started pouring. I have such a fond memory of seeing this for the first time that every time afterward, I just. MY body kicks into this mode of complete and utter captivation. I’m also an empath so getting to experience a room full of people on the edge of their seats, dead silence, utter captivation and zero breath…..I will never forget this feeling. When I saw Hadestown back in April while it was still in previews, this song was given a 3 minute standing ovation….everyone was just struck and unable to handle the raw emotion. And it still rings true to this day-I was clutching my tissue with such force, watching the lights swing and the workers and their lamps through my tears. The most powerful moment is when the workers come out with their headlamps, and it gets dark-you wonder where you’re being transported to next. It’s a tethering atmosphere. And then, when they plug the lamps in and send them up? When the lamps begin swinging and their lights swing over the audience, casting this brilliant movement and shadow into the air? It holds so much mystery and hope and it gives off this incredible, indescribable power. And the power of the chorus singing along with him? It doesn’t feel like they’re the workers singing along. It feels like Orpheus’s love is so strong and so powerful that the workers are actually just his voice amplifying and exploding and CAREENING AND CREATING ALL OF THIS FUCKING POWER FROM HIS SONG AND HIS LOVE. And also, during the la la las around 1:40 on the OBC recording, when it gets soft and quiet, that’s when the lamps go up into the air, and there’s a rumbling and some fog and the set sort of opens up to reveal sections of bright lights that glow warm, and red. He’s opening the fucking stone wall with his song, people, and it’s the most brilliantly moving staging I have ever seen. Again, you don’t need one million props to captivate an audience. It’s the way the story is told and the music is composed and everything working together. I love this. I love that nothing distracts from the moment, that the las and the workers elevating his voice and the movement of the set and the lights and the fog all come together as one coherent set piece instead of parts of a working machine. It feels so natural that you believe that Orpheus is actually opening the wall with his voice. This piece of theatre is so transcendental that you forget that you’re not actually there. Props to Reeve Carney for existing because the way he performs this song is just so captivating and pure, and you can see the desperation in his eyes but you can also hear it in his voice; it’s more strained (not in a bad or unhealthy way at all, I just mean that it’s like. The culmination of his efforts from the Epic and how hard he was concentrating have elevated his power and he’s just fully unleashing it) You can physically see what I believe-that this strain, this hurt and this hope and this desperation are what lead him to opening the wall. He was able to do it because as he was singing, he was clearly just hurt and so damn determined that he just. He had this red-cheeked, hard-lipped expression while he sang and his body (which I lovingly describe as gangly and limbly) is just. In a power stance. Like. You fully believe in the power of this man during this song, he gives it everything and he is a good portion of the reason it carries its power so immensely through the audience. There’s not a dry eye in the house after. And what I love is the collective, disbelieving mumblings of “oh my god” or “wow” or “he’s incredible” that echo through the room as the applause happens (and lingers, and lingers, until Why We Build the Wall cues us to take a fucking breath) (and the subsequent chatter of people basically asking if what they just watched was real, unable to not mention it during intermission).
Why We Build the Wall This is another one of my all-time favorite Hadestown songs. It just hits so hard. And for a while in the very beginning, I wondered why they didn’t end Act I with Wait for Me. I understand now. I don’t think I fully appreciated this song during my first few listen-throughs, and possibly not even after the first time I saw it. I think that this song deserves to be there because while Wait for Me has a lot of emotional lift and power and just pure mass to it, Why We Build the Wall holds its power differently. It makes the audience kind of shift in their seats, come back to the world we are in, kind of step back from the beautiful show of powerful love and hope and dedication that is Wait for Me and remember that oh, this is what’s going on on the other side. This is the man that’s trying to take everything away from Orpheus. And Patrick Page is such a gently commanding presence during this song-he is strong, and powerful, but in a way that feels scarily easy to him; like he is so confident in his power that it translates to this easy, call-and-response conversation because he knows his workers have no choice but to answer him and to appease him. Also the workers? In this song? Are a sheer force of nature. They look to the audience as they respond to each phrase Hades sings with these set-in-stone, serious, hardened expressions that match each other, and are perfectly in-synch. That’s what terrifies me about the Workers, is that they are so in tune to each other that it truly is like watching a wall, or a well-oiled machine. They do such a beautiful job in creating this sense of unease that this song was absolutely meant to be the ending of act I; they drive you to tears and ferocious emotion with Wait for Me, but they keep you unsettled and uncomfortable and stirred by Why We Build the Wall. And that, my friends, is why this musical was nominated for and won so many Tony’s. Because of it’s ability to make you feel, to ponder and to talk and to interpret. This show is so unique, and wonderful, and full of incredible things that I am always just in awe of it every time I see it.
Carry-Over notes: I skipped around a lot of my notes from the night of the show just because I couldn’t fit the less articulate with my actual thoughts post-show. I listened to the entirety of Act I while doing this, and took notes to the best of my ability and what I could remember.
·        Eva Noblezada is such a soft human being, she is a treasure to this earth and I fully support everything she’s done with Eurydice thus far; soft doesn’t mean weak, and she translates that really well to the way she chooses to carry her. She is a strong woman, but she is so fucking in love that she is also so soft and pure. But you still wouldn’t fuck her up ever
·        A good chunk of my notes from that night are about how Reeve singing the la laas in Epic I is a transcending experience, and how his soft and genuine and gentle expression made me break down immediately, and it can be felt in your soul.
·        I also mention about 100 times that Reeve is 10/10 the only boy who has my heart because he is so artistically passionate and just really really fucking good at what he does (and so, so soft especially in the Orphrydice moments and what I’m calling his making Orpheus canonically obsessed with kissing Eurydice’s ear/side of cheek/neck it is THE SOFTEST MOST PURE THING)
So sorry. This is the longest of ramblings. But you asked for details and honestly I’m really excited to be able to have these long ass notes to save and keep with my playbills to show in the future with my kids or the patrons of the Broadway themed café I want to open when I’m a mid 40s lesbian with a wife and maybe some adopted kids.

We’re gonna sing it again
Act two! For those who stuck around! Thanks friends!
Alright so Persephone comes out on Hermes arm and my god the POWER that radiates off these two individuals it’s truly unmatched.
Something I didn’t know what that “our lady of the underground” is performed with only Amber Grey and Andre de Shields in the stage. She is singing directly to the audience folks and I gotta tell you I’m here for it. At one point she thrust the microphone toward us exasperated like “I am asking what my name is and I expect a response” it was amazing
Alright so when the soothsayer in something rotten says “lumber legged ladies thrill ya til ya swoon” he was talking about Amber Grey, he dancing in this show is unmatched. She saunters and struts around and then will just randomly kick her face!? Like casually whip her leg up into the air like a rocket te? She’s a magical musical theater witch and I’m obsessed with her
We get Way Down Hadestown reprise and the fates are back on their bullshirt. Eurydice trues to make friends (which goes a little against her “I only look out for myself” attitude until you remember that I guess she opened up more with Orpheus) the fates tell her she can’t because no one remembers anything. Everyone except Eurydice is wearing these like leather hats? Like almost like swim caps but leather and they’re very cool. Eurydice sings “flowers” and it’s heartbreaking as you watch her forget and call out it Orpheus even though she can’t remember his name.
All of a sudden you HEAR HIM? But you can’t see him because HE ENTERS THROUGH THR AUDIENCE?! Folks one thing to know about me is I LIVE for audience entrances. Things like that make me smile. I audibly gasped in the theater. So he enters and climbs on stage guitar in hand. They embrace and it’s all very sweet, there’s a fun joke about “no I walked” it’s a good laugh. Orpheus with his big eyes is like “I charmed the walls and they let me in” (remember when the walls expanded in Wait for me? ITS COMING BACK I LOVE STUFF LIKE THIS) “and they’ll let us go home” and Eurydice is like no they won’t because...
Hades enters! It’s glorious, he stands utop a platform and berates the two of them. The Fates come in and whisk Eurydice away (looking like wind, as you do) and then papers instrumental happens and the workers beat Orpheus up?! There’s fake blood and scabs and everything. It’s one of the jazziest fights you’ll ever see!
Orpheus has his moment of doubt, he ends up rallying the workers into following him. It’s staged very well and they all end up on the trap door and slowly rise up then sink into the floor which leads into How long! Which I personally slept on, however seeing it live has changed my tune. The staging is such that Persophone and Hades are always opposite the hole in the middle of the stage and it’s glorious.
Chant reprise baby! All of the turntables are turning. Persephone and Hades match each other pace on opposite sides of Orpheus, the workers finally remove their leather caps. Hades has a fantastic authority strut. To get everyone’s attention he blows a factory whistle. It’s a lot of stuff but it’s very exciting
Oof Epic three. It makes hades feel things, it makes the audience feel things. Persephone and hades are across the stage from one another and Hades moves to stop Orpheus and Persephone holds up a finger and tells him to stop. The EMOTION it’s such a touching scene. The two of them just observe one another. When hades joins in on the “la la las” Persephone fully breaks down. She does this like nodding at him through tears that’s one of the most tender moments in the show.
And then they dance. And you almost want to dance with them.
So Eurydice and Orpheus think they can go home. The workers think they’ll be able to follow. Everything me has a brief moment of happiness. Even Hades seems convinced, for a brief moment. Then we see his need for power trump his love of his wife, the Fates come in and mess with him a little more. It’s spooky, Patrick Page does a vv good job
Hermes comes to deliver the news, the two can leave but Orpheus must walk in front. They begin walking, it’s a pretty hopeful start. Persephone and Hades promise to wait for one another, Hades says it’s almost spring! Which is cool because up until that point everyone’s been talking about how spring doesn’t come anymore. Eurydice belts her face off, then Doubt comes in
Alright y’all, this is where I would argue that the fates are the true antagonists of this show. Antagónicos in the sense where they bug every character. They follow Eurydice like the wind, they tease Persephone when she has to return to Hadestown, they make Hades feel insecure about letting the lovers go, and finally they make Orpheus doubt if he capable of leading Eurydice home. They’re a dope unit of character and I really enjoy them.
Oof the ending, I didn’t know Orpheus was TWO STEPS AWAY!! Eurydice sees the world above, she sees it. Only for him to turn away, it’s heartbreaking and I really didn’t enjoy.
Hermes ends the show with a sad “aight” everyone comes back in, Eurydice is back from the cold Orpheus is back seeing her for the first time. Persephone is coming up for summer. Life goes on. Hurt and healing and heartbreak occur, but we sing the song anyway, hoping that it’ll turn out differently this time.
I’m not gonna talk about the curtain call, the song is glorious, Andre De Shields toasted someone’s plastic water bottle. It was fantastic.
So all in all this show is a marvel. I’m still not over the walls expanding. You guys I recognize tickets are expensive, so I hope I’ve done the show justice here. I’m gonna include a link to someone else’s summary that did a bit more plot stuff because I also think that’s good. Theater should be accessible and I hope these help a little
Here’s this persons summary https://lumiereswig.tumblr.com/post/183830158690/hey-all-so-i-just-saw-hadestown-and-feel-duty

seeing hadestown 9/29/19 - part one
under the cut is my take on act one of hadestown after seeing it. i didnt really do a play by play of what’s happening in every scene so this is kind of assuming that you have some previous knowledge of the show and focuses on on the cast and the little things they were doing. part 2 here. meeting the cast. meeting tlt cast. if you have more questions or are curious about anything else PLEASE come and ask me in my inbox or messages i could talk about this show for the rest of my life
road to hell:
andre came out and it was AMAZING he held the last note of road to hell for what felt like eight years and it was incredible and for the entire time eurydice and orpheus were STARING at each other with the most perfect awestruck looks on their faces and it was such an incredible shot i was like 🤧 already
during the music part eurydice and the fates all mimicked drumming against the drum box thing at the same time it was Cute
any way the wind blows:
when eurydice lit her candle and the third fate blew it out she whipped her head around to look at the fate who just kind of shook her head innocently like “it wasn’t me” and when eurydice turned back around to light it again she just smiled and shook her head at the crowd like “don’t blame me”
this happens a few times but for the first time at the beginning of this song the fates walk towards orpheus aggressively and he gets so scared and runs back and ouch the metaphor for him being afraid of his fate......no thank you
come home with me:
come home with me was so fucking cute reeve was ADORABLE
this entire song was Fantastic for like half of it orpheus and eurydice are sitting together on the table and orpheus’ little paper flower is so genuinely awful it’s kind of sad ajhsgsvska but it was cute they showed him working very hard on it over on the side of the stage
when eurydice says “oooh he’s crazy” it leaned MUCH more heavily on the side of “i get it now this man is legally insane why are we letting him walk around amongst us” with a much longer pause that included an intense stare between eurydice and hermes that made it even funnier than the obcr
the oh a liar and a player too line genuinely caused me to ascend its better in person than you could ever imagine genuinely out of this world and orpheus sounded SO nervous when he rushed out “ohnoimnotlikethat”
wedding song:
every time reeve or eva sang the word “trees” they like thrusted their hands up violently and so did the ensemble and it was so cute and funny and the part where the table comes up behind eva was so funny and different from london it was just kind of pushed up behind her and it seemed to startle eurydice and as she leaned back she just kind of had this “whatever i’ll go with it” face on but she was Alarmed lmao
eurydice was pushed by so many tables in this song omfg
i wanted to voice record it so bad but i kept forgetting bc i didn’t want to miss A Single Thing but this was the first song where i was really really like “i wish i had recorded this” eva’s voice was chefs kiss mwah and at one part where she sang table her voice was like. palpable and she was like rubbing her hands all over a table it was heavenly
after orpheus gives her the flower in this song she legitimately doesn’t let go of it for almost the entire first act like id always assumed that she put it in her hair or her pocket but she seriously clutches it like a lifeline for a significant part of the first act it was 🥺
epic 1:
it was so stunning nobody ever warned me that wedding song ended with orpheus on his knees and hermes was like interrogating orpheus about his song while orpheus was like holding on to eurydice to not fall bc he was awkwardly balanced and i honestly think that was just reeve and eva being reeve and eva and not being orphydice and it was so cute
the whole company follows orpheus with this song like wherever he walks or turns the whole company is turned towards him paying Attention
livin it up on top:
when persephone comes down with her bouquet of flowers she tosses them over her shoulder and timothy caught them and he looked so happy he spun around in one foot and smiled so wide at the audience before setting them down on the side it was precious
at the beginning of livin it up on top persephone gives eurydice her flask and eurydice smiles really wide and nods at persephone but when persephone turns around she just looks stressed like “wtf should i do with this now”
eurydice gets up and goes right to the side of persephone while persephone is singing and she looks like she’s waiting for something and you kind of assume that it’s to give back persephone’s flask but when persephone finally turns to her at the end of the verse eurydice rushes forward with the biggest smile and presents persephone with orpheus’ flower and persephone smiles so wide and takes it from her and puts it in her hair and it’s the first time eurydice doesn’t have the flower in her hand since she first got it and it’s such a tender and precious moment
right after putting the flower in her hair persephone put her arm around eurydice and when persephone said “some may say the weather ain’t the way it used to be” she turned to face eurydice and gave her a Pointed Look and eurydice literally turned to the audience and made this 😬 exact face i was peeing
when persephone was leaving the balcony she hugged hades from behind and kissed him on his cheek and then as she was leaving he sort of lifted his hand in a mini wave and she gave him the MOST disgusted look ever and waved her hand in what i can only describe as a “fuck off and go to hell” gesture
during orpheus’ toast everyone is pretty much on the platform aside from eurydice who is right in the middle of the stage beaming at him
at one part timothy picks up eva and literally like. throws her i was like eva is flying high rn omfg he literally made it look like she weighed nothing she probably doesn’t but like.
i was wow she does this in real life at one part and i felt so blessed to witness it
all i’ve ever known:
during the intro they are staring at each other and persephone walks to each of them and puts a comforting hand on them like a mom it was Soft
the all i’ve ever known choreo was softer in person than you would ever imagine
the part where eurydice is leaning back and it looks like orpheus is holding her? that we’ve all been talking about lately? this part? they actually start on opposite sides of the stage and eurydice starts to do The Lean and orpheus halls ass and RUNS to catch her before she falls it’s so cute
the whole time for eurydice’s verse orpheus keeps trying to hold her but she keeps him at arms distance and steps back every time she says “alone” or “lonely” but when she moves into the “but now i wanna told you part” she holds him SO tight she was like first grabbing his nonexistent boobs so hard that he was backing up then his suspenders then clutching his arms and finally his hands
during eurydice’s parts the background stage lighting is a soft purpley/pink and for orpheus’ it’s a vibrant blue and then when they sing together it’s a beautiful mix of both
the just music choreo part was magical eva did the lift kick and it was majestic in person she is a Wonder
after when they’re laying down you see them holding hands and the way she sits up literally?? looks like they’re laying in bed having the conversation it’s ?? captivating strangely
after eurydice sits up orpheus comes up to hug her from behind and there is this lovely gif set from it and she holds him so tight and it really is one of the softest parts of the whole show my heart was beating triple speed because eurydice really seems on the verge of tears and orpheus just HOLDS her
way down hadestown:
they are The Most Couple couple ever first of all. after all i’ve ever known they make out for like eight years i was like????? reeva needs to calm down
persephone’s dance was just as amazing in person as you’d imagine
her dress is SO vibrant in person like. the coloring in this show is so fantastic with eurydice and hades wearing the same color and persephone standing out with her green and orpheus’ clothes are more white than the ensemble’s so it stands out wonderfully
eurydice and orpheus got interrupted while making out by being scared to death by persephone yelling at them about hadestown it was so funny
eurydice goes to dance on the platform and she tries to get orpheus to come with her but he’s reluctant so she just pats his stool instead so he sits and she dances in front of him/talks to him/touches his arms and hair it’s adorable
during the pregnant pause when orpheus did his little move in front of eurydice thing he LEPT like a gazelle and landed on one foot that made such a SOUND everyone laughed
orphydice are standing at the front at the end when everyone is saying “way doooooown” and eurydice is staring at hades and persephone descending and orpheus has his arms around her from behind and when he sees her staring he looks at the audience with a scared look on his face
a gathering storm:
when she says “did you hear me” it’s really upbeat but when she turns around and he’s already gone to work she says “orpheus...?” really sad and dejectedly
after she says “okay finish it” she climbs up to the platform and wraps her arm around him and fucking KISSES HIS SHOULDER before leaving stage i was ??🥺?!🤧?💗?!?!????🥺
epic 2:
it’s really cool - a good set up to chant with orpheus’ song finally coming together and the workers in the background really Make the scene
chant 1:
i was not ready for this
you think you understand how good the lighting in the show is but you don’t until you see chant live don’t even get me started
during hades/persephone’s opening part the entire back wall is a orange/yellow and then for orpheus’ next part they turn their backs to the audience and the back lights turn blue and for all eurydice’s parts they’re the purple/pick like from all i’ve ever known again
when eurydice asks “is it finished” her and hermes are walking behind orpheus in that order and then she turns around to ask “is he always like this” and hermes just lifts up his arms to gesture and nod towards orpheus who has already made his way back to his stool and is writing and then it’s eurydice’s verse and she disappears off to the side again after
when hermes says “orpheus? orpheus?” i had always imagined him trying to get orpheus’ attention but in actuality he’s trying to find him - for the first “orpheus?” he’s looking in the opposite direction off stage and then for the second one he’s looking up and then orpheus catches his eye and he turns to him and starts walking while shaking his head to say “poor boy working on a song” and it seems like he’s going to try and warn/help orpheus but then he seems to cave in after saying “look up” and he decides to just walk away like he’s giving up on stopping orpheus
which - if you go by the “hermes remembers the loop” theory can be read as he knows there isn’t any point to trying to stop him but he has to give it at least a shot
eurydice fights HARD for her bag and jacket it takes like three tries for the fates to take it out of her grip and it’s just as heartbreaking as you think to watch her fall i cried
for the rest of the song eurydice tries so hard to keep walking but she’s clearly freezing and keeps falling and she looks like she’s one of the workers at some parts
hey little songbird:
during this song eurydice is SO SAD the second that hades starts shitting on orpheus and saying he’s a penniless poet she turns to the audience with pouty lips and eyes and they don’t leave for the rest of the song it was Sad
for the beginning of the song she’s just more wary but curious but after that she genuinely just looks heartbroken it was soooooo heart wrenching
i think eva actually was crying too during this song and it was hard to tell at first but she was def crying by gone
at the beginning the three fates seem to be talking amongst themselves but at the first three isolated notes they turn to watch eurydice
when she says “weren’t we birds of a feather” she holds the flower out in front of her and looks at her really sadly
hades nods to the fates during “vipers and vultures” and at the piano group of three notes at the end in the higher key right after he says “they’ll pick you clean“ they smile and wave all innocently it’s so funny
when the chips are down:
the fates choreo was FANTASTICCC i cant even explain they were on fireeeee
when they’re trying to convince eurydice she has her hands squeezed against her ears and falls to the ground at one point
i forget exactly what song it was (i think this one but like i said it’s kind of unclear) but at one point eva dropped the flower and i have no clue if it was purposeful or accidental (i was leaning towards accidental) but she snatched it up so quick and gave a dirty look to the fates like warning them to stay away from it
when eurydice says “oh my aching heart” she looks forward at the audience but clutches the flower to her heart
gone i’m gone:
everyone jumped at the train whistles lmao they were LOUD tho
right after eurydice gives her tickets she puts her hands over her mouth like she can’t believe it and they stay there as she goes down
at this point i forget when exactly it happened but the flower had been out of her hair and she was back to holding it
when eurydice was disappearing after she left and the stage was dark hermes fucking picks up the candle he took from her in the beginnning and BLOWS IT OUT ????? FUCKING NOOO
wait for me:
the intro was sooooo sad the flower stood out so well against the ground
after hermes asks if orpheus has a ticket instead of sounding dejected like in the soundtrack orpheus sounds more affronted like “wha-no?!”
hermes picks up the flower and holds it over orpheus’ heart while he says “if you got the heart” and orpheus takes it and holds it for the rest of the time - mimicking eurydice clutching it for the entire beginning
i was seriously concerned about the lamps hitting his head. i don’t know how it doesn’t happen more often and honestly i totally understand that time it did bc i was like ??? how is he avoiding all these giant swinging lamps rn like he was ducking under them diving out of the way lmao well done reeve
during wait for me at one part the stage isn’t rotating so reeve is just running furiously in place and it’s so fucking funny like. he literally looks like a stressed cartoon character or something
the stage was splitting into three to represent his descent into hadestown during it and the fates were each on a part with their lanterns and looking around alarmed at each other like “wtf is happening. how is he doing this. mom come pick me up i’m scared”
why we build the wall:
even more powerful live. it was my favorite song for a long time and it didn’t disappoint
at the beginning when hades and persephone enter the stage from opposite sides persephone is walking a lot faster like “let’s get this over with” vibes and hades is walking more slow and purposefully
eurydice doesn’t join in until the very end when she turns to the front and puts her hand up like everyone else and sings the last line of the song
hermes and persephone look like they would rather be doing anything else in the world than singing this song rip
when eurydice is about to go up to sign the papers she makes eye contact with persephone who gives her a Look and eurydice just slightly raises her arms in like a “calm down” gesture lmao it was kind of funny but then persephone sadly turns away and shakes her head so it got real sad real quick
during intermission i was the very last row of the orchestra so there was a lot of commotion behind me and i heard someone ask “where’s the women’s room” and a random guy points to the line and says “follow the road to hell” i was cackling

AUvember Day 1: Greek Mythology/Cowboys
Okay this might be because I was excited to start this project but this was actually really fun and I almost want to continue the story. I DID manage to finish the full hour, but now I’m tired and probably need a nap. but hey, being tired is supposed to help with freewriting, so yay?
3 men rode on horseback slowly through the town. They were brothers, the first on a stallion of white, the second on one of dappled grey, and the third and last as black as night.
“Might as well stop here,” the second suggested, “Seems like a good place to spend the night.”
“Seems like a barren wasteland to spend the night,” The eldest said, “Look at these people, haven’t any of them heard of a good time?”
The third and youngest rolled his eyes, “I’m certain you’ve brought the good time with you, brother.”
Zeus smirked, his white beard stretched across his cheeks. “That I do, Hades. That I do.”
Naturally, as they were wont to do, they pulled their horses as close to the local saloon as they could go. It was quiet, but maybe that shouldn’t have been so surprising. It was still mid day. “Bartender!” Zeus called, 3 whiskeys for some tired men who’ve been out in the sun far too long.”
“3 whiskey’s coming at you, though I have to warn you, it won’t be refreshing.” The bartender was a rotund man, younger than the three, with rosy red cheeks suggesting he’d taken advantage of the empty store and the plentiful supplies for most of the day.
“Hardly a problem,” Poseidon said, sitting beside his brother, “a terrible drink is sometimes the best thing for you.”
The bartender placed the three whiskeys on the counter, as Zeus slid him the money to pay for it. When passed his own drink, Hades waved it off. “None for me, thanks.”
“Oh, come now, Hades,” Zeus said, shaking his shoulder so hard it hurt, “That kind of hesitance is what the road is made for. This is a time to relax, unwind, let loose,”
“He’s strung up so tight, if he unwinds his head might just fall off,” Poseidon said, gaining the laughter of Zeus and the bartender.
“I just thought,” Hades said, “SOMEbody ought to be responsible for you two.”
“Nonsense,” Zeus said, “I am king of the deserts,”
“Long may he reign!” Poseidon cheered, toasting his glass.
“And as such, I am responsible enough for all THREE of you!” Hades rolled his eyes, and Zeus got bored. He always did. “Tell me, uh, what is your name?” Zeus asked the bartender.
“Dionysus,” the bartender answered, “What can I do for you, sir?”
“Don’t you have any women in these parts?” Zeus said, looking around the bar as though there was one hiding in the corner.
“Or just a friendly goat,” Poseidon laughed, “He’ll take that.”
“That was ONE time,” Zeus said aggressively, “And I’m telling you, it was a mirage.” Poseidon continued laughing at him.
“Lady Demeters in charge of all that,” Dionysus said, “That and just about everything in town. Food, safety, other matters…”
“It’s the other matters I’m most concerned with,” Zeus said, with a raised eyebrow, “Where can I speak to her?”
Dionysus smirked, “Probably with a client this afternoon. But don’t you worry. Once the place gets a bit busier, she and her girls always come down to entertain.”
“And when DOES the place get busier?” Poseidon asked.
“Shouldn’t be more than an hour or so. Nightfall’s a comin’”
“Well then,” Zeus said, taking out more money, “Let’s see how drunk we can get in an hour, shall we?”
Hades sighed to himself as Zeus downed Hades’ whiskey. This was sure to be a long night.
The atmosphere grew tense among the three brothers as the hour progressed. More and more people, workers in the town clearly, filtered in. The brothers started up a poker game with a few of the locals. Zeus and Poseidon could hardly see straight, losing money like they were bleeding it, but Hades was quick to win it back.
With a wolf whistle, every man in the bar turned up to look at the stairs. Coming down was a voluptuous woman, getting on in the years but pretty nonetheless, in a tight green dress and a ridiculous amount of make-up and hair things. “Evenin boys,” the woman, clearly Demeter, said, “How are y’all doin today?” The men all cheered as one, each and every one of them watching her tits bounce. “Y’all ready for some fun today?”
Another round of cheers sounded, and Demeter gracefully walked down the steps, a creak at a time. Behind her came a parade of women, younger girls in similar dresses and fashion of her own.
Zeus and Poseidon watched them all step down one by one like predators choosing their prey. Either Dionysus had mentioned them, or she was just good at spotting new faces in the crowd, but Demeter zeroed in on the three newcomers, “Well, if you three aren’t a sight for sore eyes,” Leaning down heavily into Poseidon’s side, her tits in his face, “Anything I can getcha?”
Poseidon smirked at her. “Lady, if I wanted someone as old as you, I’d be home with my wife!” He tossed her like a water canister to his brother, and Zeus was more than happy to hold on.
“Oh, come now, Poseidon,” Zeus said, “I’m sure even you can appreciate a…bounty, when you see it.” Demeter, despite being flustered and infuriated by Posidon’s behavior, quickly melted back into her demeanor and giggled, bopping Zeus on the nose as he pulled her into his lap.
Hades tried very hard not to sigh audibly. He looked over his cards. A full house, not that anyone cared once the women had entered the room.
It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate women, for all Zeus’s joking about him. Sure enough, there were a great many beauties among the people out today. It was just…It was harder for him to get into the act. These women wanted money, nothing wrong with that, but he craved genuine affection, and the falsehood these women sold…just didn’t do it for him.
Dionysus came around, eager to fill up the drinks of men around the room now that they were too distracted to pay attention to a pricetag. Zeus had already managed to get his tongue down Demeter’s throat and a hand on both her hips, blindly holding out his money for Dionysus to serve him one last time before he disappeared upstairs.
Hades looked around the room, hoping to perhaps find a rejected soul who’d want to distract themselves from a lack of women with a good card game. None of the men had given up yet, too determined to try and woo one of the women from his friends. In the cacophony of movement, his gaze fell on the only still figure in the room.
She was a woman, a young woman, but certainly no longer a child. She sat in the back corner, not nearly as fancily dressed as her cohorts. He remarked quietly to himself how astonishing it was that not only was she alone, but that no man in the room, even those clearly desperate for some attention, were showing her any. It was surprising to say the least, because even dressed as plain as she was, it was obvious as obvious could be that she was the most beautiful in the room.
“Best not, lad,” Dionysus said, making Hades jump as he did not realize he was there, “That’s the Lady’s daughter. Mighty protective of her, she is. Last man who put a hand on her never used that hand right again.”
Hades eyebrows went up into his hairline. “I’ll remember that.”
Still, refusing to lay a hand didn’t mean he couldn’t look. And as he swept the room over again and again, he found his gaze fixing back to her, lingering longer and longer each time.
Then, lightning struck him, or it may as well have as her gaze met his. He blinked at her, willing to pull his gaze away, but she held him captive. Finally, she gave him the tiniest of smiles and a head nod before looking away.
Hades gulped, released from her, and feeling flushed without a drop of alcohol in his system. Clearly as no one was about to abandon their quest, he collected his winnings and headed out of the tavern, looking for a place for himself to spend the night, as his brothers had clearly both found someone else’s bed to use.
As he got close to his horses, looking to loose his saddlebag, he was accosted by a dog barking at his heels. He jumped what must have been a foot in the air, looking down at it. The dog yelled at his heels, chained to a fencepost to prevent him doing any real damage to Hades’ poor ankles. “Shh,” A voice said from behind him, “Spot, honestly,”
Hades wasn’t sure what shocked him more, the dog’s bark, or the woman from earlier coming out to pet said dog, calming him almost instantly. “Sorry ‘bout him,” she said, “He’s always antsy around strangers.”
Hades swallowed, “No worries. So am I.”
She laughed, a beautiful sound, like a spring wind. “My name’s Persephone,” she said.
“Uhh…” Hades said, “Hades.” He offered his hand awkwardly, like he was meeting a businessman. Amused, she took it, shaking it lightly.
“Tell me, Hades,” Persephone asked, “Are you a hustler?”
“What?” Hades said, concerned.
“I watched you, in there,” She said, “You didn’t drink, and you didn’t want the women. All you seemed concerned with was the poker. So…are you a hustler?”
Hades sighed, “I don’t cheat.” He said, bitterly. She raised her eyebrows. He felt bad, she didn’t know that was a sore spot for him. “Sorry…most people assume I do, because of the whole…”
“Dark, mysterious thing?” She said.
Hades nodded, “But I believe in the rules, Ms. Persephone. I believe in them above all else. You’ll have to trust me on that.”
Surprisnigly, she did, rather easily. “I do,” she said. “So, you’re not a hustler, but you DO play poker, do you not?”
Hades frowned, not sure where she was going. “Yes.”
“Rather well, judging by your money purse, correct?”
“…Yes…”
“Excellent,” She said, “Would you teach me?”
Hades blinked and could not have been more astonished. “You…”
“Mother won’t let me on her service of girls,” she said, nodding back to the tavern, “And the general store I work in only makes so much. I want to learn how to play, so I can win some money for my Mama, help out, you know?” She looked back again, “Mama’s busy with your friend, so I can do whatever I want.”
Hades thought for several seconds. The lady Demeter seemed calm enough but he shuddered to think of her bad side. “Miss…I don’t want any trouble.”
“I’m not ASKING for trouble,” She said, “Listen, I’ll let you stay for free if you teach me.”
Hades froze. He was nothing if not frugal. “Free?”
Persephone nodded. “Only money you’ll lose is that you lose in the game.”
Hades smirked, “Then I won’t lose.”
Persephone was an ideal student, listening, absorbing the rules Hades gave her, the tips but no tricks. The easiest way to find someone’s tell…and the best ways of hiding your own.
Soon enough it was too late to even be considered late and not simply ‘Early’ so she set out a blanket from the closet and set it on the floor for him. “The free boarding is on the floor?” He asked, disappointed with the accomodations.
“Well,” she said, “I’d offer the bed, but thought a gentleman like yourself might be uncomfortable sleeping beside an unmarried woman.” She took out a nightgown and laid it out on the bed ready to change.
“This…” he looked at his surroundings, “This is YOUR room?”
Of course,” She said, “Now, turn around, won’t you? It’s not polite to watch a lady change.”
Hades blood beet red and turned around, laying on the floor and squelching his eyes shut. That only made it worse, with the lack of visuals he could hear the rustle of the fabric all the better, sending waves through his imagination.
Oh, he wasn’t getting a restful sleep tonight.
In the morning he slipped out early, praying Lady Demeter and everyone else wouldn’t catch him leaving her room. He didn’t leave a note or say goodbye, though he wanted to, It didn’t seem proper.Instead he quickly collected his brothers, both hungover, and led them to the horses where he propped them up and lead them out of town.
The further they got, the easier Hades could breath. Zeus and Poseidon, however, didn’t like that they’d been pushed out, when they’d been having so much fun. “We’re going back,” Zeus said, making the decision as a group, “We still haven’t properly re-supplied, and there’s a storm coming. Best keep to civilization.”
“I’m not going back there,” Hades said.
“Yes, you are,” Zeus commanded.
“No, I’m NOT!” Hades held firm to his reigns. He couldn’t go back. Not when the forbidden fruit was there. He felt bad even thinking of her like that, she was more than a fruit, she was a person, the nicest person he’d met, and funny and charming and easy to talk to and the more he thought about it the more sure he was he couldn’t see her ever again.
“Ah, let him stay, Zeus,” Poseidon said, “He’ll come crawling back in a day or two. Easier to let him come to us.”
Zeus snorted, angry that Hades hadn’t folded to his orders. Without a word of goodbye, he left.
