#so did asriel and just all of them :( genocide is such a cruel route.... like yes get ur ass beaten by sans and be held accountable by chara
Is Chara evil?
Is Chara from Undermourning evil?
Well, Undermourning Chara is usually mean, arrogant and cruel. But does it mean he is evil?
First, I will answer - Is original Chara evil?
No.
Chara in game did nothing wrong.
NOTHING
They are dead, after all.
But did they do something wrong when they were alive?
Well, they poisoned Asgore and laugh at it.
But they didn’t poisoned Asgore intentional. Why should they do that? He was their father, person they loved. It was an accident.
But... why did they laugh? Well, there is theory that monsters laugh pain of, but I don’t really think that is it.
Remember what Flowey said at Genocide Route, when he though Frisk was Chara?
“You’ve got SICK sense of humor!”
It even probably was Chara. Yes, Chara doesn’t force Frisk to kill monsters, but they sometimes has control over Frisk.
But why do I talking about this? Well, becuase Chara probably do have sick sense of humor. They are probably sadist. Even Asriel, their best friend said that they weren’t the greatest person. But hey! Sadism means only that we like someone else’s pain. It doesn’t mean we actually want people to suffer. I know something about it. So it doesn’t mean that Chara is evil.
Chara from Undermourning is even better at this point. He didn’t laugh when he with Asriel accidently poisoned Asgore. He wasn’t even smiling. And generally - he doesn’t had original Chara’s sense of humor at all.
But what about Chara’s plan?
The truth is that the only person Chara ever killed is themself. Yes, they killed Sans, Asgore and Flowey at Genocide Route, but player force them to do this at this route. And we are talking about their past, so ignore this fact.
So, how I said - the only person Chara ever killed is themself AND they did this to free their family. The persons that they loved. Asriel agreed to do this, even though they had to die, and he had to kill six humans. But yeah... what about killing humans? We actually don’t know did they wanted to kill all humans in their village. If they did I think it was their secondary goal. Their main goal was to free monsters. But... Asriel acually said that they wanted to kill those humans. Well, Chara wanted to do this mostly because they wanted to kill Asriel, in the first place.
What about Undermourning Chara?
Well, at this point he is... worse. Asriel from my AU never agreed to do Chara’s plan. But Chara poisoned himself anyway. His wish about seeing golden flowers in his village was method to make Asriel do his plan. He wanted to kill all villagers, but he wanted to do this after taking six souls and destroing barrier. He wanted monsters’ freedom much more than revenge.
But how did he get know about that he will share control with Asriel over his body, if no one did this before them? Well, he were reading a lot about things useful at destroing barrier. About souls for example. He guessed. He guessed right. Besides...
He had nothing to lose.
So, original Chara isn’t evil.
Undermourning Chara at least wasn’t evil. After all, he just wanted monsters’ freedom. Revenge is revenge. Justified. In story “Disagree” you can see that he had suicidal tendencies, but why should it has any matter at answering at question “Is he evil?”? Besides, probably original Chara had those tendencies either. After all, why does Toriel hide knives? Why does she use only magic fire? Why does she secured gardening tools? She did this, and still doing this becuase Chara wanted to kill themself (or/and intentionally harm themself) and she was afraid that next children that will fall could have suicidal tendencies too.
But okay, if Undermourning Chara wasn’t evil, is he evil now? Well, It’s thing that everyone have to judge themselves. As I said - he usually is arrogant, mean and cruel. BUT he is like this for people that aren’t clean. He hates almost everyone - humans, monster becuase they aren’t innocent. Even Papyrus, who was innocent in Undertale isn’t innocent in Undermourning. As royal guard he knows about Undyne’s plan and does nothing about it. Chara can be kind for innocent persons. He doesn’t hate Toriel, becuase she is acutally clean. He even can like Frisk at Undeclared War Route.
He want them all suffer becuase they are guilty. So, I can say that Undermourning Chara is neutral. But you have to judge him yourself.

Weird, huh?
Random Deltarune thought:
In the game files, the fan-named “Snowgrave Route” is internally called:
Alternative Route, Side B, or Weird Route.
Which that last one, uh... seems awfully weird to do! Like, compared to the uncomfortable, gratuitous mental abuse the player can force Kris to inflict on Noelle, along with the mass-murder, it almost seems... too casual, too irreverent.
However, it’s not exactly unprecedented...
In Undertale, in the fan-named “Genocide Route”/Bad Kid/Kill-em-All/No Mercy Route... Papyrus makes it the most obvious that he knows we’re going around killing people, outright mentioning the dusty powder on our hands, & he calls us “freaking weirdo!”
And then, there’s Burgerpants, who usually calls us “little buddy” if we’ve talked to him. But if we’re in the G-Route? He switches to “little weirdo.”
Then there was even Asriel, if we backtrack all the way to the Ruins at the end of the True Pacifist run, reflecting on the fact that he had repeatedly tortured & killed everyone in the Underground...
“I did some weird stuff” indeed...
Maybe it’s kind of a reflection of the player’s mindset (since Asriel also kind of considered himself as a “player” in a “game” when he sufficiently dissociated from reality).
Players who do such routes aren’t necessarily cruel people or real killers at all. Most of them are genuinely horrified at what they uncover. They’re just curious. They just want to examine all the “what ifs”, & learn more about the characters they love, by observing their behavior in new circumstances. And they know it’s just a game.
Especially if we think oldskool, before Let’s Play streams & online revelations. Those of us old enough to remember that time, had to find out secrets tentatively, like a pioneer, & most games didn’t reward so many levels of curiosity. But, sometimes they did. & the thought of discovering something new about a game you love is exciting. So, if you just decided “I wonder what would happen if I killed everyone in this game,” your friend might just kind of be like, “All those nice characters? Wow, you’re weird.”
Not sure if that’s the intention, or if there may be some other meaning behind it, but... it’s an interesting pattern nonetheless.

(WARNING: broken english, not my main laguage)
Also, special and high inspiration on: Miss Holoska(i write right, right?) With Underswap!MH and a but of Team Switched with TS!Underswap
So, you guys rembember me talking about how many takes of Underswap is out there but not many Underfell, well, guess what? I have a Underswap take
Character explanation
Chara: i made Chara design to look like how they look in the intro and flashback of Undertale, since i have a headcanon that Chara hair is like that because Chara didn't have time to brush their hair(why would they?), and so, the Dreemurs take care of them, and one time Chara have that hair that we see on genocide end(is just my headcanon), and since in this Underswap is the first time that Chara is in thr underground and not have time to brush their hair, i decided that should look like this, also, their personality depends of the routes, not only that but their personalities is just from the differents view of Undertale Chara, the neutral route, depending of what did Chara do, they have the personality that the "Neutral-Chara" believers think they have, the pacifist route, their personality can be either sarcastic, sassy, etc, to educated, angel, lawful good etc, and finally genocide, can be either sinlent, or, if Chara used cruel ACTs, can be the stereotype evil Chara
Sans: first of all, no, he is not a child, if was i could have drawed a stripe on his shirt, so, his clothes, is just thinked that his Undertale clothes are already perfect to exercice, so why change? The only thing that i changed was the sneakers with the shoes of Temmie Chang Sans concerpt art, and their hoodie with a scarf, he have a good relationship with Toriel like in Undertale, telling puns, talking about Papyrus, etc, the only people that know that Sans go talk to the queen is his brother, Mettaboo and Napstaton, but they doesn't mind and don't tell anyone, Sans doesn't use this as a excuse to enter the royal guard, he wants to enter with his skills(like Undertale Sans, he is just skilled, but not strong), he still have the shortcut, he like sci-fi and watched enough fiction movies to assume that Chara is a Time-Traveler, he, unlike Undertale Papyrus, actually is seen with Papyrus and his friends in some areas, however, if you killed someone, only Sans will be in other areas, he will say how his brother dissapeared after the battle bentween Chara and Sans, he doesn't kill you in pacifist and neutral, only captures you, but in genocide, he wants to do justice and he tries his best to kill you and he introduce his SECRET ATTACK, KARMA
Papyrus: i decided to just make he look different from his stereotype, well he is not drepessed like Undertale Sans, actually that bags on his eyes is because he suffer from insonnia, thats why he sleep many times, Sans not get angry about that, but, yes worried, since, unlike Undertale Sans thats just lazy, Papyrus suffer from insonnia and he have "other things" to treat and Sans is really worried about his younger brother, Papyrus doesn't mind puns, unless that too many, well, Papyrus is kind and sweet outside and doesn't want the people worry about him, he will not hate the person if killed someone like "you demon" but will be highly dissapointed, he will only hate you if you kill his brother, if Chara killed someone, he will no longer appear after Sans battle and only reappear in the judgement hall, he, unlike Sans, doesn't believe that The Fallen Human is some time-traveller and think thaf just Sans crazy imagination, but he notices that the Human act strange sometimes, he never made the promise to protect a human, in pacifist, he is just fine with Chara and never treath them about they "would be dead where they stand", in neutral, if any other monster was killed, he will be just disappointed, and if Sans was killed, he doesn't kill you because he will not be any better than you, but in genocide, the hate was so much that he take action, he is way stronger than Sans, both in attacks and status, but doesn't have karma, however, he is weaker than Undertale Papyrus because he not train and not sleep very well, but he have one thing that Undertale Papyrus doesn't have, the will to end you, he have bone attacks, have blue magic and blue attacks, he also use Gaster Blaster, however they eyes are angry cartoonish eyes, but if you could see, you would have a chill on the spine
Alphys: i always imagined a Alphys battle with a mecha, so instead of her being a close-combat warrior, she wears a mecha made by Undyne as a gift, the armor have a lighting canon and a robotic axe(with lighting aspect, yes, lighting will be exclusive to Alphys in this AU), she will not have a Undying form, but will use a upgrade of her armor that more hard, Alphys doesn't talk so much and not have a explosive personality, she is also not rude, but once that you make friendship with her, she shows her good side, she is a kind and sweet person, that just want the best to the people, she really like anime and loves Undyne, in battle, she uses her mecha and make you soul yellow, that is similar to Undertale, however she gives you a powerful teaser that you use to defend yourself from attacks, but you can use to overcharge her charge shot to make her mecha arm explode, after the two arms are destroyed, she will use a attavk that open their mecha torso reaviling the core, than you use all the enerhy of the teaser to stop the machine, than you can spare her or give the final blow, while she is inconsience, you can date her with Papyrus to be friends, the date involves you draw anime and watch anime, she is akward at first because she think that Chara doesn't like her, however, you can turn the tables and be really good friends, however, if you killed someone, instead of Papyrus, Sans will be in the front of the door to visit her, then he notices Chara and ask if you also want to pay a visit, and this version, Sans and Alphys go to her room to talk, Chara stay in the kitchen, than Sans go out, then the date with Alphys start, she is kinda reluctant in this version and in the end she doesn't really see you as a friend
Asgore: he is the one that stated that every human would die, however, Toriel banned them from the capital and he insolated himself in the ruins, he still the kind and good fluffy king from Undertale, i don't have much thing to talk about him
Undyne: even if US! Undyne hair is canon in Undertale, i decided that is just a pony tail, or, sometimes, a messy hair(without a pony tail), she is more determined than Undertale Alphys and go out more to visit Papyrus and his brother, she made Napstaton body and she like anime way more than Undertale Undyne, she knows that anime is not real, but, with her determination, she made robots, armors, etc, Napstaton is the only robot with soul, and is way stronger than that robots, this robots onoy follow their progamation ans don't give EXP, she upgrade Chara's chellphone and turn it into a deluxe U-phone, that phone have pretty much the same things from Undertale Alphys Cellphone, but, instead of a yellow mode, it have a "Cyan mode", in the cyan mode, the soul turn cyan, pressing Z make the soul make a really fast tackle that destroy or react some attacks, if missed the timing or used and doesn't hit nothing, the soul get way slower, so, be PATIENCE
Mettaboo(mettaton): He is not shy or melancolic like Undertale Napstablook, in the truth, he want to perform and be the famous star in the underground, he tries things like tearthes, pilot progams, etc.., but not many people like it, but he is not giving up! He doesn't attack using robots or lighting, but attack with things like flowers, other things that resemble, magic shows, cook lessons, pose, etc, he is cousin of Napstaton and he knows that they are cousins
Napstaton(Napstablook): they is the most famous musician on the underground, making sometimes collabs, music videos, etc.. they makes songs to progams, cartoons, games, etc.. but they is pretty shy, and have a TON(fingerguns) of fans not really help with their mental health, sometimes Undyne and mettaboo to giving them moral support, in thrir battle, the Cyan mode is really necessary, is a rythm battle, the objective is make a good song until have 10000 hearts, but, in genocide, they will truly battle you and use the whole area to attack you, and their "NEO" form is called Sonical Napstaton
Asriel: he is swappes with Mosnter kid, in this universe, he is not related in any way with the dreemurs, he have a more important role in this AU in pacifist, a little in neutral, but don't appear in genocide, Asriel have the same exact personality of his Undertale counterpart, he first appear when Chara ended up sliding in a endless ice path and ended up failing in some special crystal colors flowers, Asriel heard the sound of somebody grunting and he ended up founding Chara, and he heal them, he help them in some puzzles and guide them till Springout(Snowdin swap), then Chara can visit him in the local park, the two can go for the Muffet Café, the library, etc, after that, Chara gains Asriel phone number, if doing pacifist, Asriel can be found in other places since theres not "mysterious murders" going on, he normally will appear next to save points areas, because feel some sensation(determination)
Toriel: She is the queen of the Underground, almost everyone fear her, but, in the end, she just some poor old lady that have a whole kingdom to take care, have lost her two children, and their husband "is a horrible creature" to her, when encoutering her for the first time, she is silent at first, then proceeds to talk about all that her have face while walking to the barrier, she doesn't use anything to attack except their magic, she only attack Chara because Chara doesn't want to go away from her, making her feel guilty
Frisk and Monster Kid: [NO DATA FOUNDED]
So thats all that i have now about my Underswap, i tried to make the designs to look like their original counterparts and use almost the same style of clothes of the original Undertale, thats all, please, don't steal this idea,
Special thanks to: Miss Holoska and Team Switched, they are my inspiration to do this Underswap

INFODUMP ABOUT UNDERTALE TO ME RIGHT NOW :O /POS
(about Anything At All idc if its rambly bullet points or anything pls im begging u this is lichrally my special interest cmon pleaseee /lh)
OKOK I WILL!!! /pos
cant put this under the cut on mobile so here’s your warning that this will b a very long post!!
random chara hearcanons + ramblings bc CHARA MY BELOVED!!!
i might be projecting but i hc that chara has depression and ptsd! we know they hated people bc of what asriel says during the epilogue, “I know why Chara climbed the mountain. It wasn't for a very happy reason. Frisk. I'll be honest with you. Chara hated humanity.” and i think they hate humanity so much bc of some trauma other people caused. chara is angry and upset, and probably starts to hate humanity more once they learn about all of the pain humans have caused monsters. they aren’t evil or mean, they’re traumatized and hate people because they’ve been hurt so many times
i like to think that chara is so close with asriel in part bc he was one of the first people they felt like they could fully trust. asriel was with them through everything, saved them, gave them a home, etc. i think chara loved him so much in part bc asriel was there for them when everyone else had hurt them
i think chara erases the world at the end of the genocide run because of frisk’s actions in that run and not bc they themselves are cruel. chara is smart, they know that a frisk who would kill all monsters would likely be interested in destroying things alongside chara. the way i see it, chara is angry. they had to watch frisk kill their friends and family, the monsters who took them in and protected them after they had been hurt so bad by humans. chara watched them hurt asriel after he cried and begged for them not to hurt him. they watched frisk reset over and over at every save point, trying to hard to kill everyone and everything and not stopping even when they themselves are struck down. and they don’t have a body anymore so they couldn’t do anything to stop it. genocide run frisk shows what chara hates in humanity: mercilessness and cruelity for the sake of cruelity. they want to get revenge on frisk and stop them from hurting alphys and the monsters who hid and escaped. they want to stop frisk from hurting people beyond the barrier. chara constantly says “just finish the job” throughout the run because they’re exhausted and can’t stand watching frisk hurt these monsters anymore, they just want everything to end. the reason they only come out at the end is fear, in part, and the fact that watching asriel be killed despite his cries and begs was the last thing they could take. when they say “it’s me, chara!” in the mirror in toriel’s home rather than “it’s you” i like to think it’s for a similar reason that sans says “pretend to be a human” to frisk, and for the same reason that some theorize he would make fake blood at the end of the battle with him. chara wants frisk to see another person, hoping maybe they’ll find some goodness and humanity. just like some theorize that sans would use ketchup as fake blood to make frisk see that they’re hurting people like themselves as well, chara wants frisk to see that frisk is human to remind them of any good humanity they might have. they aren’t evil and they aren’t seeing themselves in frisk’s actions, they’re trying to stop frisk from hurting everyone and trying to get revenge on frisk for the pain they’ve caused. the reason why you get a photo with chara and everyone’s faces crossed out or a chara nightmare when you finish a pacifist run after a genocide run is chara reminding frisk of the pain they caused and showing them that the atrocities they committed aren’t something they can just erase and move on from. chara just wants monsters to be happy and to be ok and they hate that once again a human has taken that happiness away from monsters, but they know a reset won’t stop frisk because they will just start over, so if they erase the world and take frisk’s soul for frisk to get it back they can hope that without that soul and determination frisk can’t reset anymore and thus no more genocide run, even though that ultimately isn’t the case. chara just wants to help monsters and they’re angry at her another human for hurting them
asriel says in the epilogue that chara wanted to hurt the humans in the village when they attacked asriel and them, but once again it’s not bc chara is evil or violent, it’s bc they were traumatized by humans and and this is like a fight response to those triggers, and also bc they wanted to protect asriel!!!
chara’s plan to collect 7 human souls as talked about in the tape was for the good of monsters, not so they could hurt humans. they wanted monsters to go free and to live a normal life with their monster family. when they say “our plan had failed, hadn’t it?” in the genocide run they’re referring to their goal of freeing and saving monsters, not like, killing the people that asriel wouldn’t fight. chara wanted to save monsters and to break the barrier, they didn’t want their soul to fuse with asriel because they knew that meant their soul couldn’t be one of the 7 to free monsters. when frisk killed the monsters in the genocide route it meant that monsters weren’t free or safe, their plan with asriel to free monsters from the underground and save them from the prison humans put them in had failed because once again a human had taken everything from them
on a lighter note, pacifist run chara narrates and translates for frisk! chara and frisk likely come from the same village seeing as they’re both able to just go up the mountain and see what’s there, so they probably know the same form of sign language. frisk is mute and signs things to chara, who translates over the phone for them. they also describe everything around frisk since they’ve lived there before and know what everything is while frisk doesn’t know. when they don’t know what to say, they describe stuff! they probably aren’t sure what to make of the mettaton fight since they’ve never seen mettaton ex before, so they say “smells like mettaton”. they don’t know about the amalgamates so they say “smells like sweet lemons” during your fight with lemon bread
the mummy wrappings in the red soul coffin were for chara. asriel removed them from their coffin and carried them off to the village before those supplies could’ve been used. when he brought chara back in after they were attacked, toriel took them out to the flower bed in the ruins where they initially landed to give them a propel burial, and then chose to live in the ruins specifically to take care of chara. chara is buried under the flowers right at the start of the ruins which is why asriel refuses to leave in the epilogue and says “someone has to take care of these flowers.” it’s also in part why toriel is so sad and lonely, being in the ruins and visiting her child daily makes her remember the pain she felt losing chara and asriel and it makes her extra worried about losing frisk and the other humans. through visiting chara like this, both asriel and toriel can see them and talk to them even though they’re mostly gone
asriel and chara were the ones who left those echo flower messages about wishes. chara was the one who laughed and said “it’s just funny, that’s my wish too”
just like kris, chara also had little red horns. chara didn’t like that they were human since they hated humans, but loved monsters and wished they were one. asriel made them little paper horns to be more monster-like, and eventually toriel sewed them an pair and put it on a headband so they could stay on their head
not really a headcanon or theory, just a note. there’s lots of similarities between kris and chara: red eyes, knives, portrayed as “strange”, likes to scare other people (kris hiding under noelle’s bed and putting ketchup on their arms to scare her, and chara doing their creepy face to asriel in the tape—they likely did it before cause asriel had to have known what it was so there’s nothing saying they only do it when asked by asriel), a bit secluded and like to be alone (toriel is no longer upset with kris when she finds out they didn’t answer her calls bc they were with a friend, chara is only ever shown or talked about in relation to asriel or their parents), both kind of get rid of their soul in some way (kris removes their soul and chara like died to give their soul to the monsters), both have similar outfits (although kris looks more like frisk in their face and hair), very close to their asriel, both like monsters, both have mostly obscured eyes until the ending of the game, etc.
chara can only verbally talk to frisk, but they can talk through the phone, similar to how asriel spoke to frisk on the phone at the end of the true lab even though he didn’t have his soul back then and was still a flower, and similar to how you can understand the memory head amalgamate when you use your phone. frisk is one of the few people who can hear their voice irl
chara can verbally talk with mettaton, mew mew, and nabstablook since they were all once ghosts/are ghosts. mettaton sometimes helps chara to speak and to appear to crowds bc they can use his microphones to speak since that’s technology and chara can use his advice to show their own incorporeal form more clearly. chara and nabstablook get along very well as shy ghosts who are best friends with their family
chara and frisk become best friends in pacifist runs :3 frisk returns the the underground sometimes to talk to asriel and lets chara speak to him while they visit through their phone, and eventually chara convinces asriel to come back with them and to live with them again (yes i know this isn’t possible in canon shhhhhhh)
chara is autistic and has adhd. they also have chronic pain and use a cane as a result of their chronic pain and bc of a long lasting injury they sustained from falling into the underground, or they float as a ghost

“Love, hope, compassion...This is what people say monster SOULs are made of. But the absolute nature of “SOUL” is unknown. After all, humans have proven their SOULs don’t need these things to exist.”
Ever since I played UNDERTALE, this one line has probably stood out to me the most, simply because it covers an issue most of the fandom seems to overlook. In response to the gameplay and its story, we tend to label monsters as good and humans as bad. We follow the story that we’re told: There was a war, humans won and trapped monsters in the Underground, Asriel was killed by humans, and seven human SOULS are needed to escape. We view the Player or Chara--depending on your view--as an ultimate evil for killing monsters through the various resets. However, what I rarely see discussed--beyond Asgore’s order to kill children from a small portion of people--is the monsters’ state of morality.
We hear it all the time and see it in this very line: “Monsters are made of compassion.” It seems to be treated as a statement of fact, but I see it as propaganda. By saying monsters are made of love and compassion, but that humans “don’t need these things to exist,” that’s placing humans as a whole as an “other,” enforcing their position as “the enemy.” And somehow... this never gets called out.
We can see why a monster would say this because of the war, Barrier, and Chara’s and Asriel’s deaths. However, how would that excuse their own calls for genocide? I won’t go into depth about Asgore here since he does show regret/reluctance for his call to slaughter humanity and we as an audience can interpret that--while his actions may not be in the right--we understand it was done in a moment of grief and pure rage. You know who doesn’t get an excuse like that? Monsters like Bratty and Catty, who cheer with a smile about how they’re “so hyped for the destruction of humanity” up until they actually realize what a human is from meeting you. In fact, most of the monsters can’t seem to recognize you as a human, from them to those retelling Asriel’s story and claiming “you’ll be free” with the rest of them while, in truth, you--as Frisk--are potentially walking to your death.
Now, you might argue, “Well, they suffered as a kingdom because of the war and from losing their future rulers. And if some of them don’t know what a human is, then it can be easy for them to label an unknown as an ultimate evil based on limited knowledge.” Ok then... so why are some of them cruel to each other? Would someone you’d describe as “compassionate” do the following:
Bully others, such as Loox, Loox’s own targets, and Gryftrot.
Allow Papyrus to feel isolated and self-conscious despite his obvious attempts to fit in and make friends, all while befriending Sans--someone who does everything possible to make his brother feel loved and accepted, and makes a point to encourage others to give him a chance--in mass.
Act “rude and loud” and “beat up everybody who gets in their way” (Undyne, according to the Red Bird NPC... who she also says the kids look up for just those reasons. I don’t entirely believe her, because of our own interactions with Undyne showing that she’s pretty cool beyond her disdain for humanity, just a little on the pushy side; however, she also attacked Asgore as a child just to prove herself and even described herself as a “hotheaded kid,” so I won’t entirely dismiss this comment either.)
Undyne is also known to fight “bad guys,” according to Monster Kid, and since MK didn’t even know Frisk was a human at first and insisted they watch her go fight them anyway, that hints that, yes, there are bad monsters that need some force to stop: This is not a strictly peaceful society.
Try to take your soul just to go to the Surface himself (Mettaton) for the sake of being a star--delaying a second war, but also leaving everyone in the entire Underground to suffer even longer because the Barrier wouldn’t get destroyed. (Nevermind that he’d have every opportunity to speak out against the war if that was one of his main reasons because of his monopoly on the Underground’s entertainment and his massive influence.)
Don’t get me wrong: I love all of these characters. They’re well-written and the fact we can recognize their flaws and still care for them is perfect. It also is a great fit to the game’s message! I just wish it went both ways.
Do me a favor and also think of things from Frisk’s perfective--as a character, not you as the Player enjoying the game. You’re trapped in this place where not only is just about everyone trying to kill you, but they actually succeed! Repeatedly! You are forced to experience death in a multitude of ways “over, and over, and over!” And you’re a child! Most people would break under that kind of severe physical and mental torture--but sure, let’s give characters like Sans a pass when they threaten you, even if you’ve only even done one route as a Pacifist, all while criticizing Frisk/Chara for their actions. The power to RESET may be insanely strong---it gives them a second chance at life--but it’s also a curse when they get to repeat that pain.
And for my last point... If most all humans were really so viscous, don’t you think it would’ve been more effective to slaughter monsterkind when they were all pinned in one place, making it as easy as shooting fish in a barrel? Or, in the very least, demanding they hand over their strongest for execution so that the rest could live even if in confinement? Wars don’t “suddenly happen without warning” as the echo flowers painted the initial human attack as, especially not when two groups have lived together for any length of time as we’re led to believe from the story. What sparks the war may seem sudden, but there’s often a build-up of tension behind it. For a irl comparison, take WWI: The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand is commonly seen as the spark, but it was also the alliances and rivalries between different nations that had been brewing for years which rallied everyone into such a huge conflict. Humans were already afraid of monsters for the ability to take souls and for equally murderous intent (as evidenced when they assumed Asriel had killed Chara). It’s not like that power was a rumor made to spread fear: Monsters confess to it themselves in their history. Therefore, we can conclude that, in all likelihood, some monsters did this well before the war even began--helping establish a conflict between their two kinds well before the war.
Sure, I have no doubt that there are awful humans in the world of UNDERTALE. I would never argue against that! Monsters, however... aren’t all exactly the “compassionate” beings some of them would like to paint themselves as.

“heya.”
“you’ve been busy, huh?”
“...” Classic was quiet as he took a breath and continued his monologue.
“so, i’ve got a question for ya.” Classic said, smiling a grim smile.
“do you think even the worst person can change…?”
“that everyone can be a good person, if they just try?”
“heh heh heh heh...”
“all right.”
“well, here’s a better question.”
“do you wanna have a bad time?”
“cause if you take another step forward...”
“you are REALLY not going to like what happens next.”
“welp.” Classic said, smiling as he shifted his feet, excited and brimming with anticipation for what he hoped was their true, last fight.
“Get ready Frisk.”
“It’s the end.”
“Well Classic I can tell you that Chara doesn't like Frisk one bit. Chara is on your side, so there is that. You can also blame the askers for this, one of us made the mistake of asking Frisk a question about the multiverse.”
“Well, I’m glad to know I have one human ally in this world.” Classic muttered during the pause as he raised his hand and launched his attack.
“Yes Nightmare! I knew you would get it! Told you that you're smart.”
“Thanks. I just wish I could tell him without being interrupted.” Nightmare said, glaring at Maxie as she shrugged innocently.
“Nightmare, of course you are a good dad. You are better than my parents, although that is a low bar. I think you are great anyway.”
“Whatever you say.” Nightmare said, laying on his back as he retracted his tentacles.
“So guys, how are you gonna keep the brat from loading so you can do this? You have to have a plan!”
“Every time they die, we’ll swap out. Keep them on their toes and curious.” Killer snickered, watching Frisk dodge the bones with masterful ease and boredom.
“if your going to drain frisks DT wait out this timeline and ambush them the second they fall so they never get a save”
“That’s the plan. Get revenge, get a RESET, then drain them.” Dust whispered, eagerly waiting his chance to beat the brat into the ground and turn them into a red mush of flesh and broken bones.
“frisk if humanity is evil why not kill all humans”
“I can’t save or load on the surface, the only reason I can kill all monsters is because I can save and load.” Frisk whispered, standing before Classic.
“Frisk stop it, you say humanity is cruel but look at yourself! You are showing the worst of our species and it needs to end. You can choose to be kind, you can choose to be the change you wish to see in others but instead you attack the people who cared about you? Stop and look at what you have become, there is so much better you could have done. Please, just stop hurting everyone.”
“I don’t care. I haven’t for a long time.” Frisk said, their eyes filled with bloodlust as they swung their knife at Classic, the punny skeleton grabbing their hands and throwing them across the room.
“classic if you don't do certain things to not break script do you fall asleep on purpose at the end of the genocide”
“I do. I get completely exhausted, and the only way to get stronger in the time I’m given is something I’ve tried. Twice.” Classic said laughing at Frisk’s shocked face.
“Though I mostly fake it nowadays, fighting the Dark Sanses really got me into shape.” Classic said, chuckling darkly as Frisk got up and charged. It was pathetic.
“chara why do you let frisk reset at the end of genocide route if you dont reset for them they wont kill toriel asriel and flowey”
“Ḭ̴̯̚ ̵̼̥̇̀w̸͙̆o̴̻̖̅ù̷̮̞̉l̵̗̠͗̈́d̷͚̼̈́̽ ̴̡̘̚ḩ̸̘͌a̶̯̒͋v̷̙̒ͅe̶͙͑ ̸̦͋ṡ̵̪͍t̴̖́̆o̶̭͍͊p̶͙͐p̸̯̩̐ê̷͚̕d̵̰̞͊͘ ̶̛͍t̴͎̫͊̽h̴̗̥̎e̴͐ͅm̸̖̔̿ ̶͓̄ī̸͎̀f̴̢̚ ̸̪͘Ì̸̢̇ ̴̰̓̚ͅc̸̣͊͝ǒ̸͓u̶̥͚͛l̵̯̃̉d̵̦̈́.̵̩̐” Chara said, small tears forming in their eyes as they held a breath they didn’t need to.
“Hey Alt, sad to tell you that you're most likely right. Most Errors were never really shown much kindness in their multiverse, most have been tortured by the creators and even the other versions of yourself and your friends. Most Errors need a helping hand, and are too scared of being hurt more to actually accept it. Also there is the touch phobia most have, which is usually a trauma induced phobia in most people who have it so it makes sense Error would have it. So what are you going to do about your Error? Are you going to try to help him?”
“I’ve tried reaching out several times, I’ve apologized for using him like I did when we fought my Nightmare, and I leave him gift baskets with chocolate and sewing supplies. I think they’re working, he’s not as active, but I hope it’s not because of the creators in my world.” Alt said, looking at Classic. He was fighting the human
“Killer, Dust.... you are both precious little beans who love their new found family and will protect them with everything you have. I don't care what you say you are adorable!”
“No we are not.” They said in unison, they were barely audible over Frisk’s screams of frustration at Sans’ new patterns. Though they haven’t died yet.
“Oh Stretch, you must mean the YandereBerry, yeah he is unsettling to say the least.”
“Ink genuinely made one, and then never made another. Everyone stayed away from our AU for a week after that incident.” Stretch said, shuddering at the memory.
“frisk what do you think of jerry”
“I hate him as much as humanity.” Frisk said, their arm crackling and bones fragments grinding against each other as they swung their blade again.
“I know those ships made you guys cringe but what they put other Red's through is worse. He gets shipped with everyone and everything, including(but not limited to) his brother, blue, the pet rock, classic, black, lust, horror, jerry(ew), and of lust.”
“Oh boy. Do not get me started.” Red grumbled, growling as he remembered one time Ink rambled on about all the ships involving him when he confessed to having a crush on Blue. It held a sour taste in his mouth as he didn’t know if it was fake or not, or if his feelings were fake or not. But he kept going as he was happy and no one was being hurt.
“I feel bad for him, he really has it the worst.” Blue said, kissing him on the cheek or whatever the equivalent was.
“He does, when I say everyone I mean EVERYONE. Every single sans has been shipped with him at least once, as have the papyrus's, he has been shipped with every monster in his universe and the kid. Red is in a lot of smut pieces, and it is kinda weird.”
“Yeah, it’s almost like he has a lot to choose from.” Black said, and Red’s eye narrowed at the sight of the promiscuous skeleton.
“killer and dust so aren't you both technically from the classic timeline”
“We are.” They said in unison.
“Oh Black, how are you planning to win Blue over?”
“I will ruin Red’s reputation with scandals and swoop in to comfort Blue in his time of betrayal. Then I will set up many circumstances where he will be in danger and I shall save him. I will also gift him with many great items worthy of Blue’s magnificence!” Black said, whispering so no one would hear him.
“Hey Frisk why don't you just talk to us for a minute and pay no mind to anything happening, you can just load if something happens anyway so no need to keep your guard up. Stop hunting down monsters and tell me a bit more about who you are, what is a few minutes?”
“A distraction. If better executed, it may have worked.” Frisk said, smirking.
“Guys please tell me this plan of yours is gonna work, do not let this murder child into the multiverse. And Paps, I know you are the forgiving type but they need to be stopped, if they somehow get access to the doodlesphere there is no telling what they might do.”
“No kidding. They are determined, more so than any monster or human we know. It’s horrifying to know what they would do if they got access to the entire multiverse.” Papyrus said, sighing as he watched what was going on, it hurt even though he had watched several times.
“I just want everyone to be ok.”
“So do I.” Papyrus said, shaking a bit.
“Yikes, Paps gave up on someone? I mean I get it, they are doing some pretty awful things just cause they can, not for any reason either. They don't have any reason to hurt anyone other than they can and they feel above consequences. Show them they are not, please.”
“With pleasure.” Dust said, watching Frisk fall down dead and swapping with Classic right as Frisk came back.
Frisk wasted no time before they were stabbed in the arm. And then their other arm, and legs. With cries of agony they fell to the ground and Dust laughed.
“Pathetic. This is what killed me millions of times? What drove me into insanity? Pathetic.” Dust said, as the kid got up and dodged.
“Well, I’m going to admire watching you die.” Dust said, firing blasters at the kid who was much slower as they beld out.
“So Error, your dad knows who you really are, or were... wanna try and guess? I mean you now know you were from a split off of the classic timeline so you should be able to narrow it down.”
“Out of everyone, the chances of them getting into the anti-void is slim, and Ink did entertain Geno as a possibility. And since I did hear a ‘G’ through the censor, I guess I was Geno. Meaning I had to watch them all go crazy at one point in time, though not Horror, he was before any Genocide.” Error said, shaking with rage.
“Is geno helping too? with stopping the brat?”
“Hell yeah!” Geno said, he was in the save screen. He would be going last.
“Error the ship with you and Ink is def a different multiverse. It is usually consensual and both are happy together in most cases. There are a few Yandere Inks but only a few. Error makes me happy.”
“Yandere and Ink are two words that shouldn’t be together. In any sentence. Ever.” Error said, shuddering at the thought.
“Also I will admit to being a tad biased in favor of the Dark Sans's, but just a tad.”
“As are we! I hope that Frisk is murdered and never comes back!” Maxie said, and the other Creators cheered.
“So Dream, Nightmare... what pranks can I help with?”
“The glitter prank.” Dream said and Red looked at him, and Dream turned away, snickering to himself.
“Can't Error use his strings to capture Frisk's soul, like when he is destroying a universe so the kid can't just reset?”
“We could, but some souls have gotten out before. We don’t want to risk him escaping.” Error said.
“Hmm, would be nice if you could somehow give Chara a second chance. They certainly deserve to be part of your family more than Frisk does. Chara still sees you all as their family.”
“They do? You can talk to them?! Oh my god.” Toriel said, falling to her knees as Asgore held his hand over his mouth.
“Well, it seems this is one big mess. Bigger than I thought.” Flowey said, looking at his former parents with an odd feeling.
“See Nightmare, it is frustrating to not just be able to tell them the answer right? Stupid censoring.”
“It sure is.” Nightmare said, sighing.
“Blue, what's in the flask? And don't deny having it, I know you do you naughty boy.”
“Whiskey. And I am once again unable to get to any level of intoxication. I might as well be drinking water!” Blue said, rubbing his temples.
“Hey Alt's Error, you doing ok? The voices aren't being too cruel are they? If they hurt you I will fight them!”
“They’re fine.” He said, giving a very disgusted look.
“error just out of curiosity aren't you and ink supposed to be there to keep balance in the multiverse”
“Replace Ink with the Creators and you have a correct statement. It used to be Ink and I but that, clearly, didn’t quite work out.” He said, rolling his eyes.
“chara is a ghost like napstablook or mettaton so isn't it possible to make a body for him”
“It’d be possible to make one for her, yes chara is a girl. A lot of people get that wrong. But the ghosts of the Underground were born that way, they never died. So I’m not sure.” Alphys said, thinking.
“error have you ever destroyed the classic timeline”
“Wouldn’t be here if I did.” Error said, watching a very morbid display on Dust’s end.
“Well that’ll give me nightmares.” Error said, turning away.
“ok so if dust sans kills all the monsters i mean all the monsters getting him to level 19 he might be able to talk to chara maybe?”
“I occasionally see a wips of green and yellow. I assume that’s the kid, but I don’t have enough DT to actually hold a conversation with them.” Dust said, sighing.
“toriel if you break script and cut the flowers that break the humans fall they will never be able to kill anyone since they died”
“I could do that, but there are other ways into the Underground, small caverns and holes on the mountain, and it’s better knowing where they will fall rather than not knowing where.” Toriel said, sighing.
“Hey Chara, is there anything you would like us to tell your parents? I want to help you!”

Chara sobbed as they squeezed their arms and sat on the ground, attacks phasing through them as they watched the fight helplessly.
“Frisk, buddy, pal, amigo, friend, my compadre... Are you sure you wanna mess around with multi-verse stuff? I don't think the other Skelebros are gonna take your threat lying down.”
“They’re nothing compared to me.” Frisk said, cackling like the maniac they were.
“How much therapy is Red gonna need after learning someone wrote smut of him and Jerry?”
“No amount of therapy will ever make this moment ok.” Red said, whining as Blue gave a very pouty look at where the sound was coming from.
“Wait I just realized Maxie forcibly hugged Error just to mess with him, that is messed up. You ask and respect his no, the guy has a touch issue. Don't bully the Error!”
“He’s been getting better, and I rarely do it. And I’m not that mean to him, Nightmare would find a way to kill me if I did.” Maxie said, pointing at Nightmare as he agreed. Not looking up from his spot on the ground.
“Nightmare, what are you and the rest of the multiverse going to do during the fight with Frisk?”
“We’re on standby in case they need help. But they’ve got this.” Nightmare said,
“Frisk, why do you hate humans so much? Did your family hurt you? Did you have a family? why betray the nicest souls you may ever meet? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?”
“I don’t need to explain myself to you.” Frisk said, small tears welling up in their eyes as they tried to killer Dust.
“Let me make one thing clear, Error better not get hurt or I will raise hell.”
“As will everyone.” Nightmare said, smirking.
error do you watch undernovela in this version of the multiverse?
“Yes I do. It is amazing.” Error said, winking as he smiled.
“error what do you think of people who ship you and ink”
“I’m sure it’s ok in alternate multiverses, but I will forever see them as weird.” Error said, walking up to face Frisk.
“to sans frisk and chara what do you think off your respective stronger than yous”
“I like it.” Classic said, “I actually listen to it every now and then.”

Deltarune’s Ending - Kris or Chara?
One of the most commonly debated topics in the fandom right now is whether the person who rips out Kris’ SOUL at the end of the game is Kris themself or Chara. Personally, I’m of two minds about it; my first instinct when I played the game is that it was Chara, but after playing through the ending a couple more times (and getting to know Kris a bit better), I’m starting to lean toward the fact that it may well be Kris, and that there are few different potential motivations for why they might have ripped their SOUL out and tossed it in the rusted birdcage. I'm making this post so I can have my thoughts all laid out in one place. Note that I’m not trying to “prove” or “disprove” either one of these theories, before anyone gets heated; I’m just trying to lay things out as I see them at the moment.
So with that said, let’s go beneath the cut.
Theory One: Chara
The first theory is that Chara took over Kris’ body at the end, ripped out their SOUL, and chucked it in the birdcage. There are quite a few reasons why so many of us jumped to this conclusion, I think, particularly since the ending was so shocking that our screams were heard around the globe. In no particular order:
1.) Kris’ design is very reminiscent of Chara.
While Kris’ hair color and skin color are actually the exact same colors used for Frisk, overall the brown hair + green and yellow striped shirt is very reminiscent of Chara for most of us, even though the green and yellow used in Kris’ shirt is not the same green and yellow used in Chara’s. (But then, the blue and purple used for Dark Kris’ pallet isn’t the same as Frisk’s shirt, either!) Though the exact same shades aren’t used, the colors are still relatively close enough that a player who doesn’t have Chara fresh in their mind won’t notice the difference. I didn’t, at least, and this is probably extra hilarious because I actually spent the entire day cosplaying Chara the day this came out (since it was our Halloween party at work, and I went as Chara since I got the locket with my collector’s edition---and yes, I’d planned this before I ever knew Deltarune was a thing, it was just very lucky timing). While there are definitely visual similarities to Frisk as well (again, the hair and skin color), the sweater color is likely what most players will zero in on, and the yellow and green is very reminiscent of Chara, moreso than Frisk.
2.) Kris has a sweet tooth, as does Chara.
Chara’s sweet tooth is a bit harder to spot, given that they don’t have as much of a public presence in Undertale as Kris does in Deltarune, but not only do they make it a point to gripe about how there isn’t any chocolate in Asgore’s fridge in the genocide run, but if you subscribe to the NarraChara theory, they also provide Frisk with a joke to tell Snowdrake about a kid who ate a pie with their bare hands. Considering that the other jokes that Frisk is provided with by the narrator also relate to Chara’s and Asriel’s childhood, it could stand to reason that the kid who ate the pie with their bare hands . . . was Chara.
And that . . . is a very Kris thing to do.
While I regretfully didn’t grab screenshots of this because I clicked through the dialogue options too quickly (and didn’t wish to play through the entire ending again), when Kris first returns home at the end of the day, Toriel tells them that she baked a pie---and then very sternly tells them to not eat the entire thing again, implying that Kris has done so before. Toriel also, if Kris talks to them about the pie, says that a pie is a perfect cure for loneliness . . . provided she actually gets to eat some. Which, again, implies that Kris has a history of eating entire pies by themself. (And let’s be honest, Kris is a naughty gremlin, evidence of which I’ll provide later in this post. They would totally forgo a fork and knife to just scoop the pie out with their fingers, you know they would.)
Sans, who met Toriel the night before, also has this to say:
Kris not only eats entire pies by themself, but they also break into Toriel’s room to eat all her chocolate. Pie and chocolate are two favorite foods that Chara and Kris seem to have in common.
3.) They both have “a SICK sense of humor!”
In Undertale, we’re told that Chara has a “SICK sense of humor” by Flowey, after Flowey begins to realize that Chara is going to turn on him and kill him, too. Flowey, who is in actuality Asriel and thus knows exactly who Chara is, is accusing Chara of joking about killing him, partially out of hope that Chara is joking, but also because it wouldn’t necessarily be out of character for Chara to do so. After all, we know thanks to the True Lab tapes that Chara laughed when they accidentally poisoned Asgore with buttercups, and he almost died. We know that, on a route where all the dogs have been killed (or perhaps it’s just genocide, but I think it also works on routes where all the Snowdin dogs were killed) that Chara thinks such an act is funny, because when you examine the bag of dog food in Alphys’ lab after the dogs have been killed, the narration notes that “you remember something funny.” We know, if you subscribe to the NarraChara theory, that Chara thinks that the fate of Snowdrake’s mother is hysterical (to the point of “tears rolling down your face”), and is baffled when Frisk doesn’t feel the same way. And during a genocide run, when you’re in the battle with RG 01 and RG 02, after Chara runs the quote about “two lovers [. . .] whose love will end in Hell,” they end it with, “I can’t stop laughing.” Chara has a canonically cruel sense of humor. They find others’ pain and misery to be funny. And while Kris’ sense of humor isn’t exactly the same . . .
. . . it’s similar.
I’ll get more into this later, but Kris is known by their neighbors for being creepy, and we know that they in particular had a fondness for tormenting their classmate and neighbor, Noelle. Noelle is a timid girl who can’t stand up for herself, but numerous dialogue branches tell us that Kris did things like hide under her bed to scare her, put ketchup on their arm and told her it was blood to scare her, told her the pizza restaurant mascot ate children to scare her, and so on. Kris took delight in frightening Noelle, and at least on one occasion had to be beaten with a wiffle ball bat before they’d stop lying. This type of thing feels like the same sort of thing Chara would do. It’s not on the same scale as laughing about people being murdered, no, but it’s a prank at the expense of someone else’s feeling of safety and comfort. It falls in line with someone who has “a SICK sense of humor.”
4.) The way Kris moves at the end of the game is reminiscent of how Chara walks during the genocide run, as told by Papyrus.
While we don’t get to see very much direct movement from Chara during Undertale given that we control them most of the time (most), their gait is described by Papyrus right before that battle:
Having one’s walk described as a “shamble about” paints a very striking image. Chara, while controlling Frisk, is not walking normally; their walk is a slow, awkward shuffle. While I don’t have a gif of this on hand, a “shamble” is the best way I can think of to describe the way Kris walks after they pick themselves up off the floor at the end of the game, even before they’ve ripped out their slow. It’s a very slow, awkward walk; they can’t even hold their body up straight. While we never got to actually see Chara “shamble about from place to place” in Undertale, we were told that’s how they moved, and we did get to see that in Deltarune with Kris there at the end. (It’s notable, too, that this is a striking difference from the only other time we saw Kris move on their own, which was when they dove to protect Susie from the king.)
5.) They flashed a slasher smile, and raised a knife.
Chara was very fond of knives. At the beginning of a genocide route, while looking through Toriel’s kitchen, they ask in red text, “Where are the knives.” At the end of a genocide route, when they find the Real Knife in their former bedroom, the flavor text reads, “Here we are!” While knives are arguably also Kris’ signature weapon due to the fact that they used a sword in the dark kingdom (and that “kris” is a type of dagger), the association that Chara has with knives can’t be overlooked.
Additionally, there’s the slasher smile. In Undertale, whenever a monster encounter begins on a genocide route, the “!” that normally appears above Frisk’s head is replaced with “=)” as the battle begins. While that’s not necessarily a slasher smile per se, we know that Chara is also prone to doing a “creepy face.” We’re told this the first time during the True Lab video tape movie marathon, wherein Asriel (in the past) urges Chara to “do [their] creepy face” for the camera. Near the end of the genocide route, meanwhile, Chara makes a “creepy face” at Flowey, which causes him distress and panic. We don’t know for sure that this is a smile, but given how happy Chara is to kill and how the smiley appears above them every time a new encounter starts, I’d wager that a slasher smile is definitely the kind of “creepy face” Toby had in mind when writing those lines and designing this character. (Additionally, I believe that Flowey tells Chara to stop looking at him with that “creepy face” at about the same time he accuses Chara of having a “SICK sense of humor,” so it would make sense if Chara was smiling there, rather than wearing any other kind of expression.)
(Note: I’m not including the red eyes here because although it’s popular fanon to give Chara red eyes, I don’t think we ever truly see their eyes turn red in the game. Their eyes are hidden in the flashbacks by their bangs---another visual similarity with Kris!---and at the end of a genocide route, their eyes look dark. I don’t think they turn red; while they do change, it’s turn into completely black voids that dark goo bleeds out of. They might flash red when Chara does their jump scare, but the entire screen does, so that doesn’t necessarily make their eyes special.
EDIT: It has come to my attention that I was being very forgetful last night / early this morning when I wrote this post, because Chara does have red eyes in the soulless pacifist endings. Therefore, the similarities between Chara and Kris jump up even higher, with Kris’ red eyes mirroring Chara’s in those endings. Carry on!)
All of this said, while this does explain why so many of us jumped to thinking that Chara had taken over Kris somehow, this evidence fails to answer the crucial question: How? Deltarune is an alternate universe from Undertale; the two stories have overlapping characters, and perhaps exist in the same multiverse, but our Undertale playthroughs have no effect on this game. Thus, Chara’s line about “let’s move onto the next” from the end of the genocide route has no bearing on this one, particularly since not all of us completed genocide runs (and thus it would be rather punishing to players who did their best to leave the Undertale characters in peace to unleash Chara on this new cast anyway). Chara can’t have made it to Kris because of us, because not all of us made that deal with Chara in the first place.
And then there’s the deal itself. After successfully completing a genocide run, Chara agrees to allow you to remake the world if, and only if, you give them your (or rather, Frisk’s) SOUL. If you refuse, Chara tells you to die then, and leaves you in the void for a long while. When they connect with you again, they again demand your SOUL. From that point forward, every pacifist run you do will be a “soulless” pacifist run.
So here’s the second question: If Chara wanted a SOUL so badly, why would they rip Kris’ SOUL out of their body and throw it in the birdcage?
The SOUL is what Chara wanted, because the SOUL gives them the ability to move freely. If they had a SOUL here, it makes no sense that they’d discard it. And no, they can’t have two SOULs in the same body, because we learned from Undertale that humans cannot absorb human SOULs. They’ve got the one SOUL, and that’s it. Chara wanted a SOUL, so their actions there at the end (aside from the knife and slasher smile) don’t make a whole lot of sense given their original motivations.
And, again, we still don’t know how they would have gotten there in the first place, unless the fountain had something to do with it. We do know that Kris’ SOUL behaved strangely when they approached the fountain, but we have no further context for what that meant at this time.
Anyway, that’s the Chara theory. Moving on to . . .
Theory Two: Kris
The second theory is that this was an act from Kris themself.
First and foremost, let’s get this out of the way: Kris is a strange child. They are a naughty little gremlin and I love them for it. Note that I use the word “child” loosely here; we don’t have an exact age for Kris, but Toriel notes that they’ll be joining Asriel in university “soon,” and their classroom is noticeably more grown-up than the one Toriel teaches in (which Susie calls the classroom for babies). Given that Kris is noted to be heading off to university soon, that their classmates are old enough to work, that Monster Kid was aged up to Monster Teen to join the class (and that they’re in class with characters like Snowdrake, who were teens in the original game), I think it’s safe to say that Kris is actually a strange teenager, rather than a strange child. Nevertheless, I am an adult, and so teenagers are children to me, so strange child they shall remain.
Regardless.
Our first clue that something is not quite right with Kris comes from the very first scene of the game, where we get a look at the bedroom Kris shares with Asriel:
Asriel’s side of the room is bright and beautiful. He has a nice computer, tons of trophies, a bedspread with a nice pattern, star stickers, a flower portrait, an alarm clock . . . it’s clear that Asriel was a well-loved child who took good care of his things. By contrast, Kris’ side of the room is downright depressing. Their bedspread is a drab grey, as is their lamp. They have nothing on their shelves or on their dresser. And at the foot of their bed . . .
There’s a questionable stain on the floor, and then the birdcage and the wagon, one of which (and we’d assume it’s the wagon, but given what happens at the end . . .) has “seen a few crashes.” If you knew nothing about Toriel or Asgore, you would assume that Kris was the unloved child, while Asriel was doted upon and spoiled rotten. We know this isn’t true; we see evidence in-game that both Toriel and Asgore love Kris very much, and want to make sure that’s known. Given how loving both Toriel and Asgore are (and how loving we know Asriel was to Kris, given that we’re told that Asriel used to do things like take Kris to the diner to get hot chocolate after their parents divorced, or how he used to carry them to school), we know that Kris wasn’t neglected or abused. Their side of the room is this barren, depressing, and creepy out of their own choice. And this is further cemented by their . . . other behaviors (a.k.a. here come the naughty gremlin receipts):
These aren’t even all the receipts I could have used; they’re just a small sample. Kris is the type of person who:
Eats entire pies by themself
Breaks into their mother’s room to eat all her chocolate
Drops bath bombs in toilets
Torments shy and timid neighbors (hiding under Noelle’s bed to scare her, telling her the pizza restaurant mascot was alive and ate children to scare her, putting ketchup on their arm and telling her it was blood to scare her . . .)
Spends church services trying to steal “sick fruit juice” instead of paying attention
Routinely forgets their pencils at home and bums pencils off their classmates (and let’s be honest, Kris isn’t the type to return those pencils, either)
Sleeps in class
Doesn’t wake up on time to the point where their big brother had to carry them to school on a regular basis
Is poorly behaved enough to be known as “creepy” by a neighbor, to the point where he tells them this to their face
I could go on. As much as Susie has been ostracized for being thought of as scary and intimidating, it seems that Kris has suffered much the same fate, with Asriel as their only friend, pretty much. It’s implied that Kris, like Susie, didn’t necessarily always want this to be the case; there’s a story told by Bratty (I think---might’ve been Catty, but I’m pretty sure it was Bratty) where they pulled the same trick on Kris that they did on Burgerpants in the original, telling Kris that they could be friends if Kris got them burgers---and then Kris did. (I think it’s also implied Kris stole the burgers, so again---naughty gremlin.) Kris wouldn’t have gone to those lengths if they didn’t want to be friends. But somewhere along the line, it seems Kris stopped caring, because Noelle comments on how odd it is that Kris is being so talkative, and we also see that no one wants to be their partner in class (and that, according to Berdy, Toriel is usually their partner). Kris’ bizarre behavior no doubt contributed to the reason why they don’t have many (if any) friends around town.
So with that being said, the idea that Kris is simply a creepy gremlin who likes to rip their SOUL out and throw it in a birdcage is not altogether that farfetched. After all, if Chara could do creepy things like poison themselves with buttercups so that they could fuse with Asriel and go on a killing spree, who’s to say that Kris couldn’t do creepy things like shove their hand into their own chest to rip their SOUL out and toss it in a birdcage? Chara and Kris do have a lot of similarities, after all, right down to their “SICK sense of humor,” so it’s not out of the question to think that maybe Kris is just the type of person to rip their own SOUL out and throw it in a birdcage at night. Maybe they’re just like that sometimes.
(Also, I won’t lie: The jokes about Asriel sighing and shoving the SOUL back in every morning are hilarious mental images for me.)
But apart from Kris just being like that sometimes, another idea struck me for why Kris might feel compelled to do such a thing . . . well, two other ideas, actually.
The first, and most basic, is that Kris was trying to reassert control. This is a theory that a few people have picked up on, I think. We know that we control the SOUL, and throughout the game we controlled Kris. We were told at the beginning that our choices don’t matter, but Kris’ choices ended up not mattering time and again throughout the game. And this has a noticeable effect; numerous people comment on the fact that Kris seems to be behaving oddly. The nurse comments that Kris can’t play the piano well even though they were always able to before. Noelle comments that it’s unusual for Kris to socialize. A few characters remark that Kris looks ill. They all shrug it off, but it’s clear that while we’re in control of Kris, they’re not in control of themselves, and so ripping the SOUL out at the end might be their way of taking control back (and perhaps the knife and slasher smile are meant to intimidate us rather than serve as a warning for what Kris is about to do to everyone else). That we can still control the SOUL while it’s in the birdcage is indicative of this as well.
The second thought that occurred to me, though . . . is that maybe Kris is trying to make themselves less human, and more monster.
Think about it:
Monster SOULs are not like human SOULs. For one thing, monster SOULs cannot persist after death. Boss monster SOULs can, for a short time, but even they disintegrate after a few moments. Human SOULs also carry incredible power; it would take many monster SOULs to equal even one human SOUL. Combine this with the fact that human SOULs come in multiple colors, and have multiple abilities, and there is a lot that separates human SOULs---and therefore humans---from monsters.
Kris, as far as we know, is the only human in town, and they seem to be rather isolated and ostracized. Again, I don’t think this is a fault on the Dreemurrs’ part, or even the neighbors’ part; as we’ve established, Kris is a creepy gremlin, so we can’t really blame the neighbors for not wanting to spend much time around them. However, Kris’ isolation is still notable. Their side of the room is barren, in stark contrast to Asriel’s. The game console under Asriel’s bed has one standard controller, and one knockoff controller. These are little cues that point to the fact that Kris may feel as though they don’t fit in, despite the love they’ve received from their adopted family. And in fact, just like the story we have wherein Kris tried to befriend Bratty, we also get a story that strongly implies that Kris does wish they were a monster like everyone else:
When Kris was a little one, they asked when their horns would grow in---when they’d look more like their adoptive family. To placate them, Asgore and Toriel bought Kris a pair of fake horns, and Kris---wanting so much to be a monster just like their family---wore them for months. Eventually, Kris gave up; they clearly knew the horns were fake and gave up thinking they could ever be a monster like their family, something which may have caused the depression that led to them leaving their room so barren. (Because I’m sorry, but I can’t look at a room like that, and behavior like this, and not think that Kris has some major emotional issues going on.) We don’t have concrete proof that Kris still wants to be a monster today, but it’s possible (and perhaps even probable) that longing never went away---and now that they’ve taken a trip to the dark kingdom, and knows what their SOUL looks like and how to access it . . . maybe they figured out a way to get one step closer to being a monster just like they’ve always dreamed.
(Or so they think, but remember what Gaster that voice said at the beginning: no one can choose what they are in this world.)
I think that if it truly is Kris at the end, then Kris doing what they did because they want to be a monster and are willing to do anything they can to be a monster rather than a human makes them a more interesting (and sympathetic) character than if they did it just because they’re a creepy weirdo (as Chara was before them according to Papyrus). But that said, all of this is speculation, and we won’t know for sure what’s going on until the full game comes out . . . whenever that is. (And even then we still might not know for sure, because Toby likes to leave ambiguity in his games, and to be honest, I think that makes everything more fun.)
Either way, these are my thoughts on this for now. Goodnight.

ok heres a really messy not put into proper words deltarune theory
note: literally just spewed out all my thoughts so this might make NO sense
there is so much that is different and wrong in this universe
the characters are still here but theyre so much different
no one who used to be friends knows anyone now
while it looks like the war between monsters and humans never happened it tore people apart in other ways
catty and bratty dont know each other and cant stand each other
mettaton is implied to still be a ghost but without feeling confident, without hope, stuck at home feeling like a nobody, maybe not even dreaming of being an idol?
alphys and undyne dont even know each other, let alone arent together anymore
sans is here but knows no one, when everyone used to know him in snowdin, and papyrus seems to not be talking to anyone when previously he was so outgoing
implied that alphys likes mew mew kissy cutie 2.... which is an abomination in itself
asriel is still alive, asgore and toriel are still split up - why? in UT she left him after their children died and asgore tried helping the monsters escape (albeit in a harmful way to humans) - obviously nothing like that happened here so what did?
kris is showing a lot of similarities to chara, in appearance and personality (playing cruel pranks on others e.g. pretending to be bleeding, being scary) and not to mention that ending.. the soul being ripped out, the knife.. the grin.
its probably a long shot. but my theory is this:
deltarune takes place in the world that appears when UT is erased.
at the end of the genocide route, undertale is erased. everything is erased. everyone is erased.
maybe chara just wanted to see their family again. and maybe the only way that could happen is erasing the story of undertale. erasing the events and people, not just of the game, but the backstory - the monster/human war, the barrier, a child falling down a hole.
i believe this is, basically, post-genocide-erasure undertale - that this would happen if the war never happened.
but now chara/kris' family has broken up again - as toriel said, it's only her and them living there. toriel split up with asgore so hes out of the picture, even though he wants to be back. asriel is at college, but with everyone asking when hell be back it feels like somethings going to happen and he wont come back.. or maybe just the constant reminder that asriel is gone is getting to chara/kris.
maybe "chara" is what kris turns into, or maybe its something seperate that possesses kris in the end cutscene. - also taking into consideration that several characters note kris to seem “weird/sick/more talkative than usual” and asking if they’re okay *.. maybe something has taken over them
but i believe this is some kind of alternate universe to the events of undertale, and even though on the surface it looks happier and more hopeful, it might prove to be a lot darker on the inside.
tldr; my theory is that deltarune is one of “chara”’s stories, set in the world of undertale except without the monster/human war, possibly after undertale’s genocide route erasure
thats it hope im at least half coherent
* EDIT: ADDITION maybe the reason kris is acting different is cos the player is controlling them now, and maybe its gonna be something like “you were chara all along”, like in undertale it was the PLAYER’S choice to do any route, if they purposely did the genocide route it was the players choice, not the game’s choice - the genocide route even gives the player a fair few ways to exit it after being initiated

minawakitten replied to your post “Sorry for Undertale-ing on main but I’e been listening to songs that...”
yall gonna have to go into more detail about that because that gremlin child did not give me many good impressions [ especially when asriel goes into detail about the time they were as one being ]
Sorry I was really focused on drawing this:
Now that I got some of my feels out of my system I’ll tell you about Chara, or at least, the story I had for her.
Spoilers under the cut, because I still want to write this damn story one day gdi
Okay so Yeah I get why you’d think Chara is an absolute gremlin. TBH I thought the same when I started developing the original AU where this specific interpretation of Chara comes from, but the story developed beyond that and she became the protagonist.
But first: Have you ever heard of the Narrator Chara Theory?
I’m not sure how popular the theory is now, but it was kind of popular when I was in the undertale fandom. The idea is simple: Chara is the narrator. This explains some strange things, like why the narrator is addressed as “Chara” by Flowey when you open the game after a pacifist run to RESET it, and other bits and bobs. A lot of people use the flavor text like “No Chocolate” or “Where are the Knives” from the genocide route to point out that this is Chara and Chara is evil--except that flavor text is narration. You can’t just say some narration is Chara while others aren’t. It’s all or nothing, and there’s hints that depending on how the player plays the game determines what kind of personality Chara gets at the end. When you do a genocide run, Chara wants to destroy the world because Chara saw Frisk kill all of monster kind and decided that the whole world should be erased. If you think about it, they are said to hate humans--and why wouldn’t they hate humans more after seeing Frisk massacre the entire monster race? What motivation would Chara have to want this world to live if the species they grew fond of was obliterated?
It’s also implied that the player’s/Frisk’s actions makes Chara “Good” or “Evil” depending on what you do. Notice how the narration changes in the different routes? That implies that the narrator themselves is a character being affected by Frisk’s actions. Chara may or may not also feel bitterness at monster kind in the afterlife, because of the declaration of war Asgore had, which is why Chara may have been enthusiastic about the genocide run as well as the pacifist run.
Once you consider Chara to be the narrator Chara’s character expands beyond what Asriel gives you and the hints you get about them in the game. Asriel’s claim that they weren’t a good person almost becomes kind of cruel, and before you say Asriel is a sweet baby child that can do no harm, let’s not forget that Asriel is also Flowey and Flowey is just Asriel’s personality without much empathy/sympathy/unable to feel emotions.
I’d like to point out that Chara... literally gave their life to try to save monster kind. They had no point of reference to what would happen to them after they died and Asriel took their soul, there was no real way for them to have known they weren’t going to just cease existing afterwards. Them taking their body up to the surface? That was probably Chara wanting to give closure to any family, or in a more bitter tone, bring their body up to the surface to show what the humans what they had done--killed them.
It’s implied heavily that Chara was abused, which is where they get their hatred of humanity from. Them wanting to kill all the humans on the surface, while still morally wrong, was probably a sort of revenge for what they did to them. They were hurt and abused, and they have an intense hatred for humanity that they probably wanted to wipe most of humanity out because of their past abuse. That is especially amplified with how it was monster kind that gave them a good home, food, love and care where as humanity remained ugly and horrid. There were no positive human influences on Chara, and seeing how such a kind and loving race was trapped under ground probably fueled the fire even more.
Either way, they did sacrifice themselves to try to free human kind, regardless of interpretations and speculation.
Now in comes my specific girl here.
My interpretation of Chara didn’t just have the above conflicts weighing on her mind, but also pressure accidentally put onto her and Asriel. Asgore, Toriel, and all of monster kind calling them their “hope” and... you know? That’s actually a lot of pressure to put on two kids, especially when one of them was abused like Chara was.
Chara sort of cracked under the pressure, feeling like she had to do something to save all of monster kind, and it lead her to mixing the poisonous buttercup flowers with milk chocolate to make poisonous chocolate bars Asriel could sneak to her without Asgore or Toriel noticing. Because she felt like she wasn’t worth anything, and hated herself for being human, she chose to sacrifice herself.
Asriel absorbed her soul, and she took her body to the surface to give closure to her brother, Marcus. Marcus is an OC who is also the soul of INTEGRITY. Yes, the ballet dancer soul is a boy in this story, and that actually kind of comes into play as to why Chara and her brother were heavily abused and eventually kicked out and living as starving children in a village. Marcus immediately recognizes his sister, and of course, thinks Asriel killed her. This causes a riot within the town and Chara wanted to fight them, kill them and collect their souls to free monster kind from the underground, but Asriel refused to fight. This ends up getting them both killed like in the canon.
In this AU/Story, Chara actually had a yellow soul of JUSTICE rather than a red soul. However she died with a red soul--how? Well in this AU, a RED soul isn’t actually a naturally occurring soul color, but rather represents the soul being overtaken by DETERMINATION. Being DETERMINED to save monster kind turned her soul red, but she couldn’t perform the RESET trick Frisk can. Why?
Marcus.
Marcus, being a blue soul, was filled with DETERMINATION to the point where his soul was red. The implications here is that yellow is easier to make red than blue is, so Marcus was filled with more DETERMINATION than Chara. In a fit of rage, he tracked Asriel to the underground carrying Chara’s body back with him, to show the monsters what hey had done to his sister and why they were being massacred by him.
His DETERMINATION wore thin, however, as he couldn’t kill Asgore, so his soul returned to blue and his soul was taken as the first soul. Enter the first glitch RESET.
You see, in this story, Chara wasn’t supposed to die like she did. She was supposed to free monsters peacefully after her brother found her, but because she died like she did, the world’s code was glitched, and it tried to rectify itself by trying to recreate the peaceful scenario. This is why there was a drought of humans not even coming near the underground and then suddenly, six humans fell in succession.
Meanwhile, Chara was put in the LOADING SCREEN, basically a dark room with no light aside from green lines of code flickering on the wall. She eventually realizes she can manipulate the code, and spends a very long time learning how to manipulate it to build a console, a machine that allowed her to see what was going on in the outside world.
Before she was able to finally make the console, however, six humans had fallen and killed. Asgore, not wanting to kill humans anymore, sent the six souls to Gaster (yes he has a role in this) and his lab assistants, Sans and Alphys, to try to figure out a better solution.
The DETERMINATION machine was created as a result, and extracted all of the DETERMINATION from the six souls. However, at a sort of celebration party for the success of the machine, Goner Kid was left unattended and accidentally pushed some buttons on the machine’s control panel, causing a severe malfunction.
Sans was only able to teleport himself and Alphys out of the lab before the machine exploded, obliterating all of their coworkers into space and time, including Gaster. The DETERMINATION plus explosion also forced another glitch RESET, creating the timeline where Gaster and all of those who perished in the lab never existed, and creating the situation with Alphys and Flowey.
Chara develops her console quite a bit after Flowey’s conception, and by this point Flowey’s been killing and RESETTING and abusing his powers.
After realizing who Flowey was, this naturally upset Chara. She eventually pieced together what happened by observing, and found that she remembers through the glitch RESETS. So she basically watches Flowey turn everyone’s lives into his play things until, you guessed it, the DETERMINATION from the previous timeline with Gaster manifests itself as Frisk, the first and only pure RED soul with no base attributes.
Frisk’s DETERMINATION surpasses Flowey’s, and Frisk takes over the timeline.
In this story, Frisk is initially a coward who runs away from all fights, but soon they start to realize their power and they become a bit more kinder. Chara is also guiding them as the “narrator” and helping them through the underground.
They do a pacifist run. Everyone’s got their happy ending.
But then... they RESET.
Frisk is the only human Chara can itneract with, so she immediately questions what Frisk was thinking, and Frisk says that they want to save both Chara and Asriel from their fate. Seeing nothing wrong with this, Chara lets them try to save her and Asriel.
RESET after RESET, and nothing is working. Chara tells Frisk to give up, but Frisk gets an idea. They decide to kill--after all, they could just RESET to bring them back, and it might lead to a clue as to how to save Chara and Asriel. Chara reluctantly agrees to it.
This is the beginning of hell.
Frisk goes through RESET after RESET trying to figure out how to save Asriel and Chara, but nothing they do is working. Not even killing. So they get desperate, and start trying to kill everyone.
That’s when a “glitch” happens in Chara’s code.
As Frisk attempts a genocide run, both their and Chara’s LOVE goes up. However, Frisk aborts the first genocide run after killing Mettaton and they RESET, thinking that there had to be a better way... except the damage has been done.
Because Chara exists outside of the RESETS, Chara’s LOVE never RESET either, and this turned her cold. Hateful. She decided that Frisk’s attempts to save her and Asriel weren’t just a waste of time--it was a form of torture.
Chara decided then, “If this is a world of ‘kill or be killed’... wouldn’t it be better off dead?”
From there, Chara devised a plan to force Frisk into completing a genocide run. She started forcing Frisk into RESETS and claimed that she had no idea what had happened. After a while, she lied to Frisk and told them that the world was ending and Frisk needed to complete a genocide run in order ti fix it. Frisk refused at first, but all Chara had to do was be patient, and Frisk finally gave in and went to attempt a genocide run.
Cue glitch two.
As they were fighting Sans, it was Sans’ code that glitched, making him remember the tale of monsters being able to absorb a human soul. Thinking that there was no other way to stop Frisk from completing a Genocide run, he forces his soul and Frisk’s to fuse.
This also causes a RESET, and Chara’s LOVE is finally back down to LV 1. However, Frisk is now unavailable for her to talk to, because now Frisk and Sans are both neither human nor monster. Sans looks the same, except for his soul, which looked like this:
The problem is, like Asriel and Chara, Sans had no way of knowing that Frisk would still have control over his body, and this causes a new kind of hell to be born as Frisk tries to complete the genocide run with Sans’s body and magic.
However, because Frisk cannot kill Sans without killing themselves and resetting, the genocide run cannot be completed at all. Sans also has a tendency to fight back for control before Frisk is able to get close to realizing this, so they are locked in an endless hell of Frisk trying to “save the world from the glitch they made” and Sans fighting to stop the from completing a genocide run.
And Chara could do nothing but watch.
She couldn’t contact Frisk anymore and tell them it was a lie, so she’s basically forced to watch their struggles with the guilt heavy on her shoulders that she caused this.
Cue the next Glitch.
Upon a RESET, Chara’s yellow soul was restored and Chara becomes the “eighth” human to fall into the underground, though she has no memories of who she is or everything that had happened. She is also wearing Frisk’s clothing, and only remembers the name “Frisk” at first, so she thinks she is Frisk. She eventually meets Sans and has to rely on him to make “Save points” but notices that he seems really bitter and pissed off at her for some reason when his eyes are white, and when they are red, he’s much kinder. She goes through the underground with her yellow soul and eventually uncovers all of what I mentioned before, and realizes that Frisk and Sans are still fused, and Frisk hasn’t gone on another Genocide run because of Chara’s appearance.
Despite Frisk refusing to kill, Sans refuses to give up their soul, paranoid that once he does they’ll just ruin everything all over again, and he blames Chara for their actions.
However the story is designed to be a series of mistakes and unfortunate events that no one person can be blamed for--Frisk’s first unprompted attempt at a genocide run corrupted Chara, Chara lied to Frisk in a plot to end the world, and Sans refuses to let Frisk’s soul go not just to keep them from hurting others, but to keep some control. None of these characters in this story are good or evil.
Anyway, Chara decides to complete a pacifist run, and it’s mostly the same from that point until just before Flowey turns into Asriel. Flowey knows Sans has Frisk’s soul, and tries to rip their souls apart--but Sans refusing to let go, makes it so Frisk’s soul and his split in half.
Frisk’s half-soul is enough to transform Flowey into Asriel, and then Chara finds her own DETERMINATION to overpower Asriel and complete the pacifist run. She gives her body to Frisk’s half-soul so they could live in their happy ending, and she and Asriel move on to the afterlife after the barrier is finally destroyed and humans and monsters can have their hopeful future once again.
Of course, Chara’s more than just this story however. She’s a break dancer, where as her brother was a ballet dancer, and their non gender-conforming interests is what gets them abused to begin with. However Chara also can play the violin and is an excellent programmer thanks to her being trapped in the LOADING SCREEN. However she’s also severely touch repulsed from living there for so long by herself. She’s also suuuper awkward and can be prickly to talk to. She’s cold, but she doesn’t really know how to be more social as her social skills are entirely wrecked at that point.
She actually hates all chocolate except white chocolate. Milk and Dark chocolate especially make her sick upon association with the poisoned chocolate bars she originally used to try to sacrifice herself to save everyone.
Anyway that’s my info=dump on my Chara from my one story and I love my daughter.

3rd Party...Xehanorts?((A crossover discussion))
((Greetings Hee Hoo Dood, Prinnyfrost reporting for duty! I wonder how many people are still excited that Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally coming out.
After so long of waiting, the 3rd main title in one of everyone’s favorite crossover gaming series is finally coming out! In the meantime, I decided to look over the trailers of the confirmed worlds.
Some I’m excited about,
others, not so much.
The one trailer that caught me the most off guard was the Winnie the Pooh trailer, and that’s for two reasons.
The first is the fact that, unlike previous entries, you’re going around and actually fighting heartless in them instead of playing mini-games. This is one thing that actually disappointed me. I loved the fact that not every world in the games has to be about combat. It shows that Sora is capable of helping others even when there aren’t any heartless or nobodies involved to mess things up.
https://www.deviantart.com/inkoto/art/YourHeart-577335208
It was one of the arguments I made as to why an Undertale world WOULD work if they ever bothered to include 3rd party worlds, as unlikely as that sounds; however that’s still not as jarring about the second thing they showed in that trailer.
Eeyore becomes a Xehanort!
Yup! Everyone’s favorite donkey with a constantly missing tail that needs more love gets taken over by Xehanort. This blew my mind because I thought Xehanort was only going after characters that originated from the Kingdom Hearts series like Riku and Roxas, but this clearly shows that he’s up for nabbing anyone in his grasp. So that got me thinking, “Who else might he target as he go through other worlds getting ready for the upcoming keyblade war against Sora and friends?”
Now like before, I’m only sticking to possible candidates on the off chance of third party involvement. While I haven’t seen any videos about people theorizing who might be next on Xehanort’s list of people to infect with his heart virus (pun not intended), I do like to stick outside the box from time to time. Plus, there’s also that chance where someone could make a crossover fanfic and could take notes from this. And remember, when I mean “3rd party” I mean strictly “3rd party”. As in anything owned by either Disney or Square won’t count for this.
Which might be for the best considering that if Thanos were to be controlled by Xehanort while holding the infinity gauntlet with all the stones, I’m pretty sure we’ll have more to worry about than losing just half the universe. I’m also not going by just the villain characters in each of the worlds either. Anyone, hero, villain, or neutral could be under Xehanort’s radar on where to spread his infection. Basically anyone from a series that pops up to mind. Now with that out of the way, let’s get started. First let’s begin with the easiest one I could come up with,
Flowey from Undertale. The reasoning for this should be pretty obvious. Flowey has no soul inside of him, and considering that souls in Undertale work pretty much the same way hearts do in Kingdom Hearts, he would be considered a Nobody, the husk of Asriel Dreemurr.
As Xemnas pointed out in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, nobodies are the easiest to take over since they’re born without hearts. While he did lie about nobodies never having one, he was telling the truth that they didn’t start out with one and it’ll take time for a new one to develop.
Xemnas: “A heart is never lost for good. There may have been variances in our dispositions, but a number of us unquestionably showed signs of a burgeoning replacement. Once born, the heart can also be nurtured. Our experiments with the heartless were attempts to control the mind and convince it to renounce its sense of self. But understand, one can banish the heart from the body, but the body will try to replace it the first chance it gets, for as many times as it takes.”
Asriel didn’t become whole again until he absorbs the souls of all the monsters in the underground as well as the 6 human souls Asgore obtained. So I’d say his best bet take over Asriel is to implant his soul into him while he’s still Flowey or wait until Flowey starts taking everyone’s soul from the underground, become one of the souls he takes without him realizing it, and become the dominant one.
Actually, now that I think about it, it’s actually pretty damn dark when you realize this means by doing this, Xehanort has pretty much taken the ENTIRE underground hostage just to make Asriel his vessel, leaving only Frisk and Chara (who’s resting inside of Frisk’s soul) remaining. Ugh...and I thought the genocide route was fucked up. Speaking of crazy people and broken hearts, let’s head over to another series I mentioned might work for Kingdom Hearts,
Orphen. Considering that this is an old show that not a lot of people are familiar with, let me give you a quick refresher.
Orphen is the tale of a talented sorcerer named Krylancelo Finradi (or “Orphen”), who left a school of magic in order to save his sister Azalie after she transformed into a dragon by stabbing herself in the chest with a magic sword.
And believe it or not, it’s that sister whose going to be targeted by Xehanort next. Why?
Well, Xehanort seems to be able to control those that show darkness seeping into their hearts as if it found cracks and begins to flow through them, like water leaking through a whole. That’s the case in how he controlled Aqua, Terra, and Riku.
I bring this up because in the anime, Azalie was very nice and sweet. While she was the #1 student in the Tower of Fang, she never let it go to her head.
That is until one day where she confessed her feelings to her teacher, Master Childman (yes, that IS his name), the person who brought her and Orphen in while they were out in the winter on their own.
Surprise, surprise, Childman rejected her proposal stating that he only considers her his student.
It’s at that point the drove Azalie more into her studies. She became obsessed with power, aiming to become strong enough to impress and possibly surpass Childman. Orphen even says it when bringing up their backstory in episode 8 of the anime.
Orphen: ”Sometimes I could see a different side of her. Something that frightened me. She was intense, almost fanatical about her studies. Her curiosity was insatiable. I tried to tell myself it was just ambition, but deep down, I knew it was something else. Something dangerous.”
This got to a point where she attempted to experiment with the forbidden Sword of Baltanders. While it wasn’t clear of what she was trying to do with it, considering she stabbed herself in the chest with it, I believe she was trying to turn herself into an all powerful sorceress, since the sword has the power to turn anyone it cuts to anything the user wishes.
It didn’t work... It also didn’t help that her former colleagues began hunting her down and tried to kill her, which drove her even more insane, so she starts killing people! Do you get what I’m trying to point out here? Her obsession for power, her lack of sanity, she’s a prime target for Xehanort! Darkness has definitely found its way into her heart and it’s growing stronger overtime. The only issue I can think of that Xehanort might have is the fact that Azalie is well adverse with white magic. This includes mind manipulation and soul transfer, so there’s a good chance she could be at least somewhat resistant to him.
In which case, I guess he would try to take advantage of that Gaia machine in the video game. Alright, let’s see what else we could come up with.
Hmm, while I do think Shantae could work as a possible world, I can’t really think of anyone that could become a Xehanort. Then again, I should get back to playing Shantae 3 soon.
Hmm...the only possible candidate I could think of is Satsuki, and even then, that’s a huge maybe.
Pretty sure they already have their own true Organization XIII.
Okay! Now we’re talking! Sengoku Basara! Granted, while I only played the 3rd game in the series and watched the movie “Last Party”, I’m pretty sure we have a perfect candidate to become another Xehanort puppet.
At first, I was thinking about Mitsunari, considering his grumpy attitude and carries a huge vengence against Ieyasu (or Masamune in the “Last Party” movie). Clearly someone like the Dark Prince himself would definitely be a Xehanort...that is until I recall one important detail that Ieyasu points out in Oichi’s story in Sengoku Basara 3.
Ieyasu: “Back in those days, Mitsunari seemed to possess...qualities. Both darkness and light. People admired his exceptional abilities. He gained respect for fearlessly showing his true nature. I’ll admit, I was envious of him because of this.”
Although it may not seem like it, Mitsunari has a balanced heart. He’s cruel, and cold, but loyal to a fault and isn’t afraid of his true self. Xehanort tends to struggle when it comes to dealing with people with more balanced hearts. That’s how Riku was able to break free from his control without the aid of Namine’s lock. So, that’s fine and dandy, but you know who doesn’t have a good balanced heart?
Oichi Oda! After the fall of the Oda clan, Oichi became mentally unstable. She wanders around to different areas without much of a clue and in different hands, she could be kind and helpful or a threat to anyone she comes to contact with.
It’s almost like if she herself became a heartless or nobody, like she loss her sense of self.
That is until Nobunaga comes back to life, realizes what she must do, and she sacrifices herself to save the world. So, Xehanort may want to act BEFORE that happens. Like Xemnas said, a heart doesn’t stay lost forever. Okay, this is starting to get long so, I’ll bring up just one more possible candidate. For this, let’s head over to one of my favorite franchises,
The Disgaea series. I’ll be honest with you, this was more difficult for me than I expected. I kept debating about who could be the ideal candidate to work with.
At first, I was thinking Etna around the time she loses her memories due to the fact that she discarded them after so much frustration in terms of Krichevskoy marring another woman, having a child with said woman, and dying by the hands of Tyrant Baal. Guess everyone has their drastic ways of handling rejection.
Then I thought about Fubuki, a guy obsessed with seeking vengence against the fake Zenon after the destruction of the clan, no matter what the means.
Then there’s Mao, whose heart became in flux for years due to Geoffry pushing him to become the strongest overlord just to he can have a good fight.
Finally, I thought of Void, a guy who literally let a dark heart take over his mind after being jealous of Killia and accidentally killing his sister. I thought any one of these people would be a prime target for Xehanort, that is until my friends on Amino convinced me about what could possibly be the perfect candidate out of everyone in the entire franchise...
Nemo from Disgaea 4. And if you’re thinking that I’m just saying that because his name means “No one” in latin, like Desco points out in the game, you’re not wrong. It IS a major reason considering that he’s literally discarding his sense of self just to be a nobody. Remember what Xemnas said! That’s what the experiments he did with the heartless were all about! Also, remember that Artina spent her time as an angel trying to get Nemo to let go of his hatred, but overtime, he stopped hearing her voice and stopped believing, as if Artina failed to nurture his heart to see the brighter side.
Hell, knowing that Xehanort can time travel, I would be surprised if in Kingdom Hearts continuity, he would go back in time to try to convince Nemo to give into the darkness just for that reason. Kind of like if he’s another voice in his head telling him to ignore Artina and seek vengeance against the humans and demons. I can picture him doing it now actually, getting Nemo to turn away while giving Artina a fiendish smile as they leave. That’s how evil Xehanort is! It makes too much sense. So, those are the possible 3rd party Xehanorts I could come up with. Anyone you can think of?))

Uh I
I have a theory
Also, tag for somewhat mentions of suicide below
Spoilers for Undertale Below! Do no proceed beyond this point!:
So ya know In the Undertale Pacifist Run, Flowey goes fucking awol and is intent on killing the player in order to take the human souls and become a God.
But eventually by the end of the Neutral Run he gets defeated. You see him laying like a corpse there by the end while you’re given the chance to either kill him or spare him.
If you’re doing the true pacifist run, you would spare him and Flowey would throw a tantrum asking why the player was being nice to him, why hadn’t the player liked him, why has the player not taken the chance to get rid of something that has been causing them torment and pressure ever since they fell into the underground. Why was Frisk... sparing him..? When no one else would...?
Somehow he has the ability to grow legs, then runs away from the player and it would end the neutral run. Those who played the rest knows how it ends - Flowey would return by the end allowing the player to return to the game and reach the true pacifist route, every last thing is mentioned, everyone but Flowey himself is completely saved.
But if you decide to proceed by killing Flowey, when you choose FIGHT instead MERCY... Flowey is surprised. It’s like.. like he knew it would come some day. That someone with a powerful human soul like Frisk would either fail and give Flowey the chance to escape and become the True GOD, the human would die at the hands of Asgore, leaving another human soul for the monsters to break through the barrier and take forth the surface, or the human would succeed in killing Asgore, escape the underground themselves, and leave the monsters - including Flowey - begins. To Flowey, each ending - besides him becoming a God - seems like a bad ending. At least for him. And here’s my theory.
Flowey knows each of these is a bad ending, because not one of them ends nicely for him. We know Flowey is a heartless and cruel creature, right? He tries to kill Frisk just as the human falls down, he whispers horrible messages into Papyrus’ head, he bets Muffet - knowing she’ll probably accept for the future of spider kind - a huge span of money if she was able to get your SOUL.
The previous endings about - none of them are beneficial for Flowey. The human dying at the hands of Asgore could be beneficial, but that would only be if Asgore would be at low health, and Flowey would be able to kill him and take his soul. Obviously that wouldn’t be the case since Asgore won the battle - meaning Frisk most likely didn’t fight back. And with the monsters breaking free, with them breaking through the barrier, with them finally becoming free and escaping their long held prison, no one would ever think to find Flowey, pick him up and take him with them. Not after all he’s done.
The other ending - where Frisk kills Asgore instead and takes his SOUL and leaves the underground - resulting in a neutral run - means that Flowey (along with the other monsters) would continue to be stuck underground. We remember the end of the genocide route, right? Where Frisk kills Flowey? Since Flowey can activate things such as the Save Files and the ability to load and reload, and the fact that he basically described the fake meaning of love just to gain some from Frisk and get their soul, that Flowey knows how much LV Frisk has. That Frisk is so far gone that he knows Chara probably wouldn’t answer him if he tried. Still, he tries to gain Chara’s attention, tries to give Chara the idea of sparing him, give them the idea that if they were to spare him, they would get more help then needed and they could be partners once more. However, Frisk doesn’t allow it as they force Chara to kill he brother until he is nothing but ashes. So since we already know how Flowey would react to Frisk if they were to go genocide, we know he would be nervous and anxious around them if they were neutral. Flowey knows that since Asgore didn’t collect the human soul, that Frisk has hsir soul intact and is able to escape the barrier and return to the surface with both their and Asgore’s soul, that Flowey wouldn’t stand a chance against them. Therefore, Frisk returns to the surface and Flowey is left down with the other monsters once again as Undyne takes rule.
So obviously this doesn’t make a lot of sense and you’re asking me stuff like - how does this add up? Why does this matter? What is your point? My point - my theory is that - Flowey wants to die.
Now before you fight me on this, I have evidence:
By the end of the Pacifist/Neutral Run, we see Flowey generally confused when Frisk spares him. He begins to question the child’s actions, only to become more harsher to the point of threatening Frisk that if they weren’t to kill him now, just to think of all the awful stuff they could do in the future. How much pain and misery they could bring to others. How much sorrow they could cause in Frisk’s life, and how they could easily gain the human souls and make Frisk’s life hell once more.
Not only this, but Flowey speaks of himself awfully as if... he’s used to it. We know he isn’t here anymore, he’s dead, and all that’s left is a sorrowless, soulless husk inside of a plant body. Plus, with the amount of time since his death, with the amount of time the monsters have been underground, Flowey has seen enough humans fall down, enough times trying to gain their souls, that he’s probably used to being called an evil flower. That he’s so used to it, that he himself has started calling him self a murderer, a vengeful killer, a genocidal maniac. So using that to get Frisk to kill him wouldn’t bother him in the slightest, believing that with enough pushing Frisk would decide to kill Flowey and spare the lives of the underground by getting rid of the demon once and for all.
But reread what is said again, because I’m about to make sense of it all as I possibly can: It seems as though that Flowey might have some human left in him, but that’s not the case- the method up above is Flowey’s own way of persuading Frisk to kill him. To not help the underground, but to help him.
Before I explain more, another piece of evidence would be in the final moments if you decide to kill Flowey rather than spare him. Once you pick the choice, Flowey smiles brightly - almost sadistic - and cheers Frisk on with a cheery “I knew you had it in you!”. Flowey seems to be satisfied and somewhat proud that Frisk has made the decision to kill him.
And finally the last piece of evidence would be his last words by the end of the Pacifist run. Once he frees all the monsters and destroys the barrier and gives everyone their own soul back, he explains what will happen after everything he just did - “In a few moments I’ll go back to being a flower. I’ll lose the ability to love other people.”. He makes it known that it was awful being a flower - and understandably from what has happened so far, it probably is. When we all first met Flowey, when he showed his true intention, we thought of him as this evil prick of a flower. This heartless bastard with no sympathy or care for anyone in the world. And although Flowey might not care for that, although he might be used to it by now, you know who would care for it?
Him. Asriel Dreemurr.
We know that from the use of the genocide ending, when Asriel reveals he is Flowey and begs for Frisk not to kill him, that Asriel probably still has consciousness inside of Flowey’s body. And at the Pacifist ending, he reveals that he knew what was happening throughout while a flower and even knows enough to describe it as awful and horrible. How horrible he was - how Flowey was - to the ones he loves and cared for. So, during his time in the underground along with the falling of the human children, Flowey has probably heard enough slurs and back talk from Toriel who saved the children from Flowey, has heard slurs from Sans. And although it may not bother him as much, if Asriel may still have some consciousness inside of him, then Asriel can hear what they’re saying. Of what they’re saying about Flowey - about him.
Since Asriel sees himself as Flowey, then he would probably think that those slurs and insults are being directed at him, which sort of, they kind of are. And do you know how much pressure, how much harm that could do to a child? A child thst’s already been deprived of their future, of a lifetime of memories and been forced into the life of a soulless being. Can you imagine how Asriel might feel to hear his mother speak of him like that? To hear his past friends, speak of him like he was nothing?
There is no denying it that Asriel could have cracked while being Flowey. No one has observed it because Flowey always hides out until Asgore’s battle where he kills him and takes the souls.
So it would make sense - and don’t take this out of context - for Asriel to believe this way. To believe that he deserves to be killed; for all the crimes that’s been done to his family, his friends, his subjects. All the pain he - as Flowey - has put the entire underground through. Asriel could most likely blame himself for the death of the human children that fell down - Asgore started killing every human child that fell down because of the grief over his children’s demise. That much pressure, that much grief and regret, it’s no wonder Asriel might be feeling these things.
And once the final child falls down, once Flowey’s only resolution is to take their soul instead and become god otherwise his existence is pointless, once Frisk wins against Flowey, once Flowey sees that Frisk still has their soul intact...
Flowey gives up. He gives up his “life”, his journey, his mission to become a god. He doesn’t believe it’s possible anymore. The human child won. The child was able to survive every possible throw the flower launched at him, no matter what the child went through, with DETERMINATION they were able to succeed. And with that, Flowey has no choice.
By that time, after all the SOULS escaped from his body, after his omega form completely trashed his “body”, he’s too weak to even fight against Frisk. Sure, throw a couple of insults here and there, but no real physical fighting occurs. That’s because Flowey gave up, he gave up on trying to fight against Frisk, he accepted that Frisk won and thought that for victory, for the safety of every monster in the underground, it would be safe enough to kill him right then and there.
And yet, Frisk allows Flowey to live on, to which Flowey’s obviously confused. But for what exactly? What else is there to live for? He failed at his goal to become all-powerful, and to have that all soiled by a stupid child that fell into the underground by accident, a child that Flowey could have had the SOUL of, could have become powerful with and escape the underground, could have severely damaged his pride. And by this point, Flowey knows what happens now. Frisk will either leave the underground with the monster king’s soul, or bring the entire monster community with them and free the underground. Without Flowey. Flowey will be alone, and this time for good.
But Asriel. Asriel probably feels like he deserves this. Like he deserves to be killed. With all the regret that’s built up inside of him, all the rage he let out during the Omega Flowey battle, probably left him numb and dull. He didn’t decide to fight back against Frisk anymore, he just wanted to end it all. He’s rather be dead then be hated and abandoned and left alone forever once again. And to have a human like Frisk, SPARE someone like them. It could do a lot to Asriel. And all that emotion Flowey felt, and since Flowey’s a heartless being, it’s most likely some of Asriel’s traits popped through. It’s possible Asriel was too shocked and confused by Frisk’s choice that he couldn’t take it. He had to run away.
Now, I could be completely wrong on this. But this is just. A theory of mine and I have no intention of it being real or fake. I honestly don’t care.

Thoughts on Genocide in Undertale
I just finished playing Undertale for the first time about a few weeks ago. I sort of avoided the whole thing when it first came out a few years ago because it just seemed like some kind of flavor-of-the-month type thing, you know that thing everyone obsesses about for a while but ultimately is forgotten when something new comes along to replace it. So I was a bit uninterested in it, I only bought it last December on Steam™ because of a sale and even then still didn’t manage to cultivate enough motivation to play for a while. Since a few weeks ago I’ve played it to completion six times from total genocide to pacifism. Undertale at first seemed to be a simple if not enjoyable romp but underneath it explores intriguing themes, which Genocide in particular explores these thought-inducing themes. It’s just sort of been sitting in my brain (my thoughts on Genocide), bubbling and frothing, and I feel the urge to get my thoughts out about it coherently in writing or I might experience some kind of cartoonish episode with steam coming from my ears in nose or something.
What really strikes me as so thought provoking is how the game explores player psychology, in other words what drives a player to act in certain ways and what does that mean in regards to the player. If you have only played Undertale to completion through Neutral and Pacifist routes some of Undertale’s like more thought provoking themes will mostly be just hinted at, shallow glimpses of it here and there, notably through brief conversations with Sans and Flowey but Undertale really explores these ideas when a player commits to finishing a Genocide route.
In Non-Genocide the player will play the game in the way that is syncretic with the most enjoyable mechanics of the game. Act’ing with monsters rather than Fight’ing them is in all respects a more interesting way to interface with the game and is rewarded with whimsical dialogue immediately and later on with dialogue with other characters, interesting Boss fights, puzzles, etc.. In Genocide all these things are sort of like just stripped away. The Fight interactions in Undertale are arguably the least interesting and most tedious way of dispatching monsters, and Genocide forces the player to use this interaction not only for all monsters encountered but forces the player to endure tedium and boredom seeking out every monster to destroy them and advancing too far into the game before doing so will prevent the player from killing them, so it also easy to make a mistake and be put on track for Neutral, rather than Genocide. All the puzzles, in Genocide, are completed before the player arrives. The areas are vacant of monsters to talk to (vacant of the ones who don’t attack you), the music of the areas is replaced with a stretched, distorted version of the normal track interlaced with roaring booms. Even Boss fights end anticlimactically with a single hit aside from Undyne and Sans.
What makes the Genocide run compelling in spite of tedium and stringent boredom is how it (Genocide) cynically deconstructs the game. In the ending for Pacifist, for instance, the player apparently defeats Asriel Dreamur through the friendships and love that the player has for the character’s they’ve spent hours befriending and becoming emotionally invested in and the world of Undertale as a whole. In Genocide, however, the source of power for the character is not given these pretenses. Undyne, the first of the two challenging fights, also draws on the same motivation that narratively the player had in Pacifist. She thinks of her friends, the world, and draws her strength from this after receiving a near fatal blow by the player character. However, she is defeated. This serves to illustrate that these things, friendship, love, emotional investment, etc., really don’t matter in the context of interfacing with Undertale. In Pacifist and Neutral the player is introduced to Determination as a recurring meme, used encouragingly on the player’s death and humorously at save points throughout the game. In the Undyne fight, this is where the idea of Determination is no longer a meme but is shown to be the true source of power for the player and character. If the player is determined then they can overcome any challenge in a game because by nature games are systems with a win goal that can be achieved by the player. Throughout Genocide save points text boxes will read simply “Determination”, as if reminding the player that their determination to finish Genocide is what gives them the power to continue enduring unpleasantness.
In the end of Neutral and Pacifist the player is introduced to the concept of Level of Violence and Execution Points as an abstraction of the player’s emotional withdrawal from the world, which, at least on a first time playing through, will in some way be acquired whether through accidental murder or purposeful. The inevitable acquisition of LVL and EXP in a player’s first time interfacing with Underatle, I think, shows that all players have some disposition towards violence and some disconnect, mentally, from their interface with the game and their effects on the world. In Genocide I felt absolutely terrible for killing Toriel, what she said in her final moments before oblivion really plucked an emotional string. As I continued through I did find it easier and easier to commit violence as my LVL increased and boredom started to be a primary emotional state, until finally by the time I reached the Core I was Alt-Tab’ed, watching YouTube™ videos while occasionally shifting my attention back to murder a monster. If that isn’t an emotional disconnect between my actions and their effect then I don’t know what is. This of course is all subjective and my personal emotional reaction will not be absolute for all players, even at the highest level that can be reached I still felt a small nub of guilt for the final murder that the player can perform at the end of Genocide.
Sans serves not only as the second and final challenge of the game and the climax of Genocide, but as personally my final severance of attachment to any character in the game. Sans is by far the most difficult fight in Undertale. Sans breaks conventions that were established by the game, Sans attacks first, you can be hurt in between attacks, Sparing leads to failure, and attacks can be commenced by Sans unexpectedly. The only way to beat Sans is to spend hours memorizing his attacks until the player acts reflexively, and you have no friends to help you like in Asreil Dreamur’s fight (the player sort of killed all their would-be-friends at this point, after all), which is perhaps the second most difficult fight in Undertale. All that’s left is Determination, determination to finish Genocide despite all the tedium, boredom, and frustration, despite the fact there is, as Sans says, no good to come from Genocide.
During the fight Sans diagnoses the player’s motivations for their chosen method interfacing with Undertale. Sans suggests that the player determines to finish Genocide not out of malice or evil but as a kind of morbid fascination. This by contrast suggests Pacifism is completed through not really any kind of moral abhorrence of violence (as nearly all players have capacity for violence), but from the player’s determination to finish the game without killing any monster. This inverts the player’s motivation in Pacifism quite cynically; a player has Determination to beat the game non-violently not out of any serious moral conviction but from a desire to see more of the game, which is almost identical for the motivations for Genocide.
After needlessly murdering Sans, the player has completed Genocide with only one door separating them from the end of the game. Asgore and Flowey die in the throne room, but not through player action, at this point the player character is now thoroughly controlled by the Fallen Human. When starting the game the player can name the Fallen Human and at first it’s thought to be naming the character the player controls, but in Pacifist it’s revealed that the character the player controls is named Frisk and in Genocide it’s the Fallen Human (which I guess is named Chara?). These two identities come about through contradictory ways of interfacing and marks opposite psychologies of player interaction with video game software. You can imagine Frisk as a manifestation of a player who becomes invested in the game emotionally, talking to all the characters, befriending them, indulging in exposition dumps of game lore, etc.. Fallen Human can be imagined to be a player who skips dialogue and grinds monsters into extinction to max stats without regard toward it’s affect upon the world. Each manifestation of player psychology has its own conclusion, Frisk being a Deus ex Machina happy ending with man and Fallen Human being a permanent blight on the game.
Once Genocide is completed the Underground and world above are destroyed but to Reset the game has a lasting consequence to future games played. In Neutral lasting consequences of player actions were ultimately shallow and served, in my opinion, as an introduction to the consequence of Genocide. Upon completing Genocide and resetting there is a flag placed on the game that would corrupt subsequent completions of Pacifist with an ending that invalidates the happy ending. To complete Genocide it required for the player to emotionally distance themselves from the world, to accept that the characters in the game have a disposable emotional value to the player, and the corruption of Pacifist is a narrative change that reflects the player’s change (You really don’t care about the characters, huh? Well then I guess you won’t mind if I just invalidate your happy ending, then, will you?). However, I don’t believe that this blight of the game is necessarily directed toward the player’s arbitrary and cruel actions inside the game space. The consequence of genocide doesn’t really focus it’s critique on the capriciousness of players, however there is a little of that interspersed throughout the game, but more of a critique on how some players view games as disposable systems. Viewing of games as cold and impersonal systems is really what leads the player to Genocide and this is what the game critiques, not necessarily violence in of itself but the cold impersonal min-maxing that precludes emotional investment, which I feel is the ultimate thematic message of Genocide.
Man, I wrote way too many words about a game that no one even cares about anymore, I just wasted like three hours.
