Tender: Deleted Scenes
As promised, here are a few deleted scenes from Tender! Many of these are NSFW, and the content warnings from the finished fic apply to these scenes, too, please be mindful. With that out of the way, here we go!
First up, we have an alternate version of the first scene in the cave; originally, I was going to have LWJ make the first move, but it became pretty obvious that that didn’t work. Still, I was sad to lose the “LWJ talking WWX into believing he’s wanted” piece, which is one of my favorite genres of Wangxian dialogue.
“You haven’t seen me in a year.”
“If Wei Ying supposes that a year is enough time for me to forget him, he is incorrect.”
Lan Wangji doesn’t say that even twenty years would not be enough time – he knows Wei Ying is allergic to large amounts of sincerity.
“And last night—”
Beat.
“Last night,” Wei Ying says, as if it’s final.
Beat.
“Wei Ying says he is not ashamed—”
“I’m not. But I’m not the person you wanted before.”
“Wei Ying.”
“Lan Zhan. Last night, when I touched you. You were disgusted.”
“Wei Ying was trying to disgust me.”
“Well. That’s true.”
“Wei Ying does not disgust me. Wei Ying’s touch does not disgust me,” Lan Wangji says, in perhaps the greatest understatement of a life of understatement.
Beat.
WWX HAS DECIDED TO QUIT TALKING AROUND IT. “I’m a whore,” he says bluntly.
“You are a man of principle.”
WWX UTTERLY GOBSMACKED BY THAT RESPONSE..
Lan Wangji goes on to say, “Wei Ying is a man. Wei Ying is a demonic cultivator.”
“Hey! I object to that.”
Lan Wangji ignores him. “Wei Ying is an impoverished outcast from the five major clans. Wei Ying is in every way unsuitable in the eyes of the clan leaders and their disciples.”
“Is this supposed to be making me feel better?” Wei Ying interjects.
“Wei Ying is all that I want in this life,” Lan Wangji finishes.
And to that, Wei Ying has no reply.
The original concept for this story, as you will see if you keep reading, was significantly hornier than the finished product. In the final version, none of the four sex scenes involves a detailed and explicit blow-by-blow (as it were), and two of them actually fade to black before penetration and then revisit some details in flashback. This was the original version of sex scene number 2 – I really liked it, but it was redundant with the morning-after scene.
Wei Ying had whispered, “Lan Zhan, I—don’t hate me, please, please don’t hate me afterward, please—”
“Wei Ying. I could not.”
Wei Ying ducks his head. “I—”
“I asked you for this.” He had remembered, then—men are often unkind to those who gratify desires of which they are ashamed. “I am not ashamed,” he said, lifting Wei Ying’s chin so that their eyes can meet. “I am not ashamed of wanting this. I am not ashamed to give myself to you.”
“Lan Zhan, you—” Wei Ying kissed him, fervent and sweet – and in the midst of the kiss, he took what Lan Wangji offered, and Lan Wangji was made new.
On a non-horny note, I really liked this cute “WWX and LWJ and A-Yuan meditate together on LWJ’s third day” scene, but it wasn’t good for the pacing and had to go.
He is surprised but pleased when Wei Ying joins them, sitting close beside Lan Wangji. “Is it all right, Lan Zhan?” he whispers.
“Mn.”
Wei Ying’s breath joins and then matches the rhythm of Lan Wangji’s own – steady and soft.
In time, A-Yuan loses concentration and slips into sleep, sagging against Lan Wangji’s chest. He is so small and so warm.
That would be sweet enough. But not long after, Lan Wangji feels another gentle weight come to rest against his body – upon his shoulder, and against his arm. Heavy with sleep, but far too light.
His Wei Ying.
His Wei Ying, finding in Lan Wangji’s body a sturdy place to land. A shelter and a softness. For this one last day, he can, at least, be that.
At peace, Lan Wangji continues his meditation past the time when he would normally end his practice. When he finally stirs, Wei Ying whispers, “Don’t open your eyes, Lan Zhan.”
So, of course, Lan Zhan’s eyes instinctively flicker open – to find that he—the whole group of them, in fact—have become something of an object of entertainment. The Wens toiling in the fields look over at them and grin; one older man is unabashedly stopped in the middle of the clearing, leaning on his shovel and watching them with a soft smile.
Lan Wangji’s ears burn again and he looks away; Wei Ying chuckles and kisses his cheek, saying, “I told you not to look, silly.”
“It’s very cute when his ears do that,” says a woman with burn scars painted across her face, sauntering by with a basket and a grin. “Is that how all Lans blush?”
“If you want to find out, get your own,” Wei Ying retorts, and she giggles.
The ruckus has woken up A-Yuan, who pouts up at Lan Wangji and says he’s hungry. They go in search of Wen-popo.
This next bit was going to be in sex scene #3, but ending that scene on WWX asking “for Hanguang-jun’s mercy” and the narration saying LWJ gives him what he asked for was just so much stronger than continuing to this and then walking through the play-by-play. You’ve got to be able to recognize a good scene-ending line when you write one! And then walk away.
It is the easiest thing in the world to be gentle to Wei Ying. Diligence and self-restraint are the warp and weft of Lan Wangji’s character. Indeed, it is Wei Ying, in the end, who urges him on:
“I’m ready, Lan Zhan,” his eyes so dark, “come on, I want you—”
Lan Wangji hesitates. “Last night…”
“My body knows what to do,” Wei Ying promises. “You can feel it, ah?”
Yes. The soft, easy way Wei Ying had opened for him, from the first touch of his finger—a whine creeps up the back of his throat at the mere memory, and he has to hide his face in the crook of Wei Ying’s neck.
When he has mastered himself enough to speak, he nods, and carefully withdraws his fingers.
The scene that takes place after sex scene #3 was also originally longer – I really liked this and it was the last thing I cut, because I absolutely love WWX being a little shit and LWJ being possessive, but the tone just wasn’t right for the melancholy and tender vibe of the rest of the fic.
It occurs to Lan Wangji that there is more of his seed still inside of Wei Ying. His cock twitches, even in its spent state. He places his fingertips at Wei Ying’s entrance and applies a slight pressure.
“May I?”
Wei Ying snuggles closer, and the curve of his smile deepens. “My, my,” he says, fluttering his eyelashes. “The generosity of Hanguang-jun truly knows no bounds. He gives me his sword—” The word is so heavy with innuendo that it would sink even in saltwater. “—a bounty of precious pearls—” His eyebrows waggle up and down shamelessly. “—and now his fingers? Aiyo, this humble one is undeserving…”
As Wei Ying has delivered this whole speech while hitching his hips back toward Lan Wangji’s hand, Lan Wangji feels no compunction about pushing his fingers inside. Wei Ying moans, and squeezes around Lan Wangji’s fingers as if in welcome.
Lan Wangji falls into a reverie, lost in the warmth of Wei Ying’s body and the intoxicating awareness that some part of the slickness surrounding his exploring fingers is his – a part of himself that he left inside of his beloved.
Here’s a piece of dialogue that was originally part of the final forehead ribbon conversation. But that conversation is so long, and we didn’t need this.
He hates this. He hates this; to have made a promise that Wei Ying must now feel was empty. How can you atone for a gift given and then taken back? I cannot breathe, he thinks, while his chest rises and falls as it always has.
“Lan Zhan, someday—someday things will—be better. We’ll have what we need. And then… what’s mine can be yours. Just yours. And what’s yours can be only mine. All right?”
Lan Wangji closes his eyes. How? he wants to say, and doesn’t.
In addition to being hornier, the original concept for this story was going to have it go until WWX is invited to Jin Ling’s shindig, and end it with LWJ delivering the invite in person and then accompanying WWX to Jinlintai instead of Wen Ning going with him. That would have been a sprawling fix-it fic and I’m glad I didn’t write it, but anyway, there was going to be this confrontation when LWJ gets back to CR:
“Wangji accepts Shufu’s punishment.” Beat. “But it will not alter his actions.”
SHUFU FREAKING OUT. “You will not return to Yiling!”
“Wangji will. He has promised. Wangji will accept Shufu’s punishment on each return.”
“Each return?”
LWJ says nothing.
And then this exchange with Lan Xichen:
“I will receive letters from a Yuandao, in Yiling. If they do not reach me, I will be forced to conduct our correspondence by less remote means.”
LXC UNDERSTANDS HIM.
“Did you ask him to come with you?”
LWJ nods.
Beat.
“He did not ask me to stay.”
Beat. STRONGLY IMPLIED: I WOULD IF HE EVER ASKED.
“Can you help him?”
LWJ hesitates. Nods.
Beat.
“Then you should tell your Yuandao to address his letters to me.”
LWJ bows deeply. “Thank you, Xiongzhang.”
Hope you enjoyed!

The Damage You Do: ch 21, pt 1
New chapter starts!
Some secret revealed!
CW: lwj's abusive father (more towards their mother than he and his brother); lwj also believes he and his brother were probably the result of r*pe
Also, due to some work changes, I'm switching to updating Sun-Thur, starting Saturday, so I won't be back until Sunday. Enjoy your weekends, and Easters, if you're celebrating!
Previously
~
lwj floated. It was rare that he floated—even rarer than when he dropped. To be so content. To know that he and his sub were safe and content. To know that nothing in the world could disturb them—well, technically his cousin or uncle could. They were the only people with enough courage to burst into his mother’s home without his permission.
Once, his brother had had that confidence as well.
Realistically, not a day went by where he didn’t feel his uncle’s confidence waning as well, but that was more purposeful on his part than the situation with his brother was.
His brother’s was just… frustrating.
Clouds and rain washed the thoughts away. Floating. Yes, he was floating, right.
His mouth quirked, wondering what the sub at his knees would think if he knew that his dom suffered with getting his mind to settle just as much as he himself did. Yes, he was better at pushing things aside overall, but he wasn’t like wwx, who so easily fell into subspace.
His eyes peeked open, taking in the beautiful man below him, gently sucking on his soft cock. It had been painful at first—even lwj could admit they may have over-indulged a bit today—but it had been necessary. wwx had been so cute, mouthing at nothing as he resisted falling into subspace.
Who was he to refuse such cuteness, even if it had been less than pleasant for a while. He’d gone mostly numb now, thankfully, after coming once more in the other man’s mouth, a hand clapped to his own mouth as he tried not to moan at the sensation of coming soft.
It had been a long time since he’d done that—been so worn out that he’d be unable to do more than stiffen the smallest amount before coming. It had been very, very good, even if he could barely feel wwx’s warmth around him now.
He reached out, running a hand gently through his sub’s hair, knotted up yet again. It really was an impressive skill, his hair’s knotting ability. The adorable man had barely flinched when he’d come again, whined slightly, eyebrows scrunching together as he tried to get his ruined throat to work. Fuck. He had loved ruining that throat. wwx had come so close to taking all of him—had been so desperate to take it all.
Adorable.
Addictive.
If wwx didn’t have a son—not to mention a terrifying pseudo-grandmother who may not have the power to destroy the Lans anymore, but could still definitely make them suffer if they crossed her—he would be tempted to keep him here. Keep him safe and comfortable and—
And sometimes he really hated himself. Hated that he was so much like his father, who had locked his mother up in this very apartment. Kept her safe and comfortable until he couldn’t. She’d made the best of it, had his children. Loved him and his brother with all her heart, despite the fact that they had probably been the result of r*pe. What a lovely day that had been, when he had realized that. Wondered if his own desire to force his cock into screaming men was some genetic disposition.
She’d been happy, though, in the memories he had of her. Had given them lives that were different—secluded—but wonderful all the same. Had read the bedtime stories and tucked them in even into their teens. Had bought them anything they wanted and tried to inspire in them a desire to make this world better—and to treat their partners with soft respect and kindness.
She had also decorated this place to be over-the-top, each item so expensive that even decades on the vintage electronics worked—there really was something to be said for the quality of older appliances—the grout had had to be redone, but the care his mother—and now he himself—put into this place had allowed it to last.
It would stay like this forever, if he had anything to say about it. It was his home, even if the style wasn’t exactly his. It was home. It was childhood and laughter and love.
It was his mother.
His father had, of course, really hated this place. Hated the style, the expense, the fact that his children loved it more than his own minimalist home. He had wanted to change it, both when his mother had lived, and after she had died. He’d never done it, for one reason or another, and then lwj had moved in, and even his father hadn’t been stupid enough to tempt a war with his younger son, not when half their group had already begun to favour him as the next leader.
Then his father had been dead. That had probably been the best day of his life—except, maybe, for the day he met wwx.

Hello, anon!
Are you there? Last week you asked about fics that I would like to see as real books (and also for high-quality recs), and I'm able to answer you now! I wrote a lot so it's going under the cut
Honestly I mostly rbed that post out of a brief amusement over a hypothetical bc I don't think fanfic and original stories really scratch the same itch or even draw on the same skills so I am happy to keep them separated. And if I love a work for being about wx, I don't think I'd like it if it was revamped to be about original characters. I don't think most fanfic authors (who are primarily hobbyists) have the writing skill to craft really good original fiction, and that's fine! I do know for a fact at least one writer whose fics are in my rec list IS a published author and I know that her book sucks. it has got to suck with prose like that
BUT. if there was one who DID write well enough that their work could be published. Glyphic of See You Yesterday fame I have absolute faith in. The worldbuilding, while based off canon, is complex and well-developed, the plot is drawn-out but absolutely riveting, the character work is rich enough that I can see them creating compelling original characters, and the prose is gut-wrenching. If that author released a real book with a premise I had interest in, I would buy it and expect it to be good bc that fic is so delicious and I have complete faith in their ability to create original content. and it would be a finished product so I could FINISH IT without FALLING INTO DESPAIR unlike my current relationship with syy
And yes it is in my fic rec list! Each fic has a little summary and I usually say whether it's decent quality or not, plus my favorites are starred. I'd say check out Section One for all the best wangxian stuff, but See you Yesterday's entry is in Section Four
But for specifically high-quality wx/excellent writing, here are the highlights. Please keep in mind I prefer happy endings but I do tend to gravitate towards dark content since I think it captures canon themes the best, so many of these comes with hefty trigger warnings that you can see under their entries on my rec page. ALL of these are wx unless specified otherwise
From Section One:
*second person* by theherocomplex - gorgeous writing, cool concepts, lots of coming to terms with stuff. wx more at the end but really good
*fish & wild geese* by impossibletruths - little forest AU so perhaps not the most original but BEAUTIFULLY written lwj pov and a very sweet romance
empty as the sky by incendir - a casefic where wwx is transported to a universe where he still has his mother, his sister, social status, and his gc, but never fell in love with lwj. really lovely wx even tho lwj is mostly not present
*feast and famine by luckymarrow - extremely high-quality writing, including wx writing, but huge tw for sexual assault. like. that's the plot of the fic
*places under the sky by narie - lots of wwx family backstory! it hurt me so bad is all and I can never read it again
*总有一天; a place to hide (can’t find one near)* by yiqie - shaky and corny writing here and there, but overall a lovely story with some geniunely riveting passages. one of my older faves. tw for suicide attempt
*As a Shadow, As a Dream* by balmandbitterness - some creepy magic post-nghtless city keeps lwj and wwx in contact. spooky, but tender and comforting even so. and I love the ending
*somewhere they live, somewhere they multiply by perilously - spooky! let's get this married couple some therapy
the low sky, raining over by chibilwj (thelogicoftaste) - very unusual fic, this one. postcanon kidfic but the kid is maybe cursed
*Close Your Soft Eyes* by timetoboldlygo - just REALLY lovely and mature wx
Where the Lonely Ones Go by CSHfic, VSfic - really cute postcanon casefic with a haunted baby girl wx sort of adopt
From Section Two:
his hands keep turning to birds and flying away from him (him being you) by zerodignity - the first part of a series where wwx isn't cis but also doesn't have the words to describe himself. the wx in the second work in this series rules
From Section Four:
*hide fox, and all after* by blackfeather (oogenesis) - not wx, but I AM in love with the worldbuilding and I think the attention given to a tertiary character (mxy) shows a strength in original writing that you wouldn't necessarily see if someone was only writing main characters who already have personalities, backstories, etc.
*a tide in two seas by occultings (microcomets) - this one was wild
counterpart by queensmooting - similar concept to the above. also wild
*strangers on the shore by seularen - spy fic but not a bootlicking kind, just really well-researched and tense and elaborate
From Section Five:
*To Love Mountains* by HerenorThereNearnorFar - not wx, but the backstories of all the parents is SO fascinating I love you cssr
*Marital Prospects* by Vamillepudding - not particularly high-quality writing in any sense except for the fact that this author has posted some of the funniest things I have ever read and that's got to count for something. see also The Shape of Your Love (is Horny) (found in section six)
From Section Six (heed warnings abt the authors!)
*A Lot of Edges Called Perhaps* by hansbekhart - honest to god obsessed with the wx in this one
*Out of the darkness, into the day by ilip13 - a long postcanon get-together. fantastic wx
*all the depths of us* by northofallmusic (tofsla) - also great wx!
*here’s to upright men by isozyme - an nhs postcanon study
The Good That Won’t Come Out by raisedbyhyenas - postcanon wx angst/dealing with stuff. neat worldbuilding and compelling original characters
*Vagabond by xantissa - quite frankly this fic was insane to read. the wx blew my mind
*grave goods* by luckymarrow - less focused on wx and more on death and grieving. really well-done tho, and the wx IS there and important

Your talent for writing is a blessing! It makes my day a bit better reading your content. if your not busy (please take a break if you are) is it ok to request how LXC, JC, WWX and LWJ react to their s/o who is very stoic and cold smile for the first time? Like they never see them smile in canon au? Advance Thank You
hi!
thank you so much for your sweetness
this such a cute and familiar concept. i’ve feel like i’ve written something similar before for song lan...; if i find that post again i’ll share it here, hehe.
please enjoy this concept with some more characters!
to you~
*:..。o○ ○o。..:*
Lan Xichen
it is not coldness, as much as it is pure seriousness
you didn’t really ever smile
you were very work oriented, straight forward and focused
so smiling, laughing, stronger (happier) emotions were mostly pushed to the side
not when there was so much work to be done, as the leader and protector that you were
but in the instance that Lan Xichen catches a smile on your face
that being, when you are giving him a tour of your one of the outer villages of your sect
and a child comes running up to you,
the smile that you give the toddler is absolutely radiant,
so loving, caring
and it isn’t hard to see why the children of your sect love you so much
watching your serene profile as you pick the young boy up, nudge his cheek as he laughs at you
Lan Xichen knows that you will be a great leader,
and he’s in awe, a little love struck, by the warmth of happiness, spread on your face
Jiang Cheng
honestly, Jiang Cheng would have just thought that you didn’t know how to smile
your presence at sect leader meetings was similar to the frost on the branches in winter
cold, biting, freezing
you were quiet, serious and rarely ever laughed
which is why the expression that you wear now makes him quite winded
this soft, laid back expression on your face, as you sit with him on one of the higher floors of the shops,
overlooking the riverside port of his town
it is the first time that you have ever accepted an invitation to dine with him,
working with you, he understood that you rarely ever made time for anything that wasn’t business
he doesn’t know why you’d agree to meet him tonight,
but he’s grateful that you did
“thank you,” he hears you tell him, as you lift the cup of liquor to your lips and down it
when you put it down, a bit heavy handedly
he watches this small smile grace your face, a mixture of intoxication and melancholy as you stare at the cup in your hands
Jiang Cheng doesn’t know what to think of your expression
doesn’t think he can ever forget it
Wei Wuxian
Wei Wuxian has never seen you smile
and he didn’t think that he would ever get to
your natural disposition was quite cold, closed off ever since he met you
now that he’s known you for a few months,
it is still much the same
though instead of coldness, he understands the serious look you wear is more out of shyness than anything
he’s getting to know your emotions little by little
remembering your squeezed eye and light shout when you’re surprised, or scared
knows the smirk that you sometimes don when he does something stupid
but still yet to see a full smile
“c’mon, smile for me, won’t you? it’ll probably help the birds sing,” Wei Wuxian teases you, now that he’s so easily walked over past the line of acquaintance and into friend
and you hate to admit it, but you think of him as a friend too
and it’s after the probably hundredth time that he teases you on your walk that you finally
stop, turn over to him and give him this full blown forced smile,
and you look like a kid, a five year old
it gets a loud laugh out of Wei Wuxian, one that colors your ears and cheeks red as you quickly stop ahead of him on the dirt path
your face is so bright, so cute even with such a forced smile
and as Wei Wuxian follows your lead,
he gets even more curious, of how bright a real smile would look on you
Lan Wangji
honestly seeing a smile from the Hanguang-Jun himself, was also a feat in and of itself
but where Lan Wangji just usually didn’t smile
you, yourself, didn’t like to smile
and it was the oddest idea that Lan Wangji had ever come across, ever since you had told him about it,
“people won’t take me seriously if i smile,” you had said, when the topic comes along after a long night of scroll reading and advisement and boring work
and that had been the end of that
you don’t smile, at all, ever really and keep that little bit of yourself secret
until a few months down the line of your friendship with Lan Wangji
when he finally sees you smile,
he is quite taken back
because you look so happy, carefree from your normal seriousness,
it throws Wangji for a small loop
and he thinks maybe the real reason why you don’t smile
is because any one who saw it would be so easily distracted, smitten
Lan Wangji knows he himself is,
from the first look
“why are you looking at me like that?” you ask him, looking away from the bunny you’re bouncing in your arms for a moment
Lan Wangji simply stares,
doesn’t quite respond

maybe I’m expecting too much from the bird app but it grates at my nerves to see people scream their very uninformed, very subjective takes with such confidence. last week it was fools who somehow read danmei set in ancient China and then judged it with their 21st century ideas of what constitutes abuse. yes I’m talking about Yu Ziyuan, she might not be the epitome of parental excellence but some people clearly approach her character with a small-minded view, paying no attention to her history, the setting, neither the characters’ nor their own cultural backgrounds. but anyway, that’s not what’s bothering me today.
as a bottom lwj stan, fandom is honestly a fun place for me, sure there’s not a lot of content but the content that exists is great and there’s so much enthusiasm among the small community of bottomji stans. I know there’s lots of folks in mdzs fandom that can’t stomach switch/reverse content and that’s perfectly fine. lots of those people just mute tags and accounts and move on.
which is why the recent take on how lwj being a “sadist dom” is “intrinsic” to his character is almost funny. on one hand it’s very interesting that someone who enjoys canon dynamics and has mountains of content to choose from feels the need to point out how anyone who likes the opposite is wrong. I suppose it’s nice to get an easy kick out of feeling superior over something like top/bottom dynamics.
anyone who says bottom lwj is canon is wrong obviously, at least in mdzs-verse. and of course there’s people who say “oh you just think cql lwj is a bottom because he’s feminine” and to that I say “yeah, probably” because it’s a fact that most of us have been conditioned to read certain things as masc/fem.
I’m aware of my biases when I look at characters. I know mdzs reverses traditional danmei tropes, I know what it looks like when the feminine one is automatically assumed to be the bottom. but I literally don’t care. fandom is not activism and I don’t need to have politically correct likes/dislikes when it comes to which fictional characters get the d.
this isn’t to say that your political views don’t shape how you read things because obviously they do. we’re all here for a variety of reasons, usually some combination of the chance to explore a romance that’s unhindered by traditional gender and sex dynamics, the cultural connection, the representation of queer people. the first one is the one that really resonates with me and so power imbalance is something that I’m pretty sensitive to. for me, the idea of wwx -getting insulted for being a servant’s son, giving up his golden core and weakening, absconding with refugees and living in poverty, then coming back in the body of mxy who’s shorter, slimmer, has a disgraced background and is generally less powerful (apart from demonic cultivation ofc), moving into CR and being topped by an aggressive lwj is just not very romantic. i can read it as porn but if there’s plot then it’s not as appealing as lwj who’s either a soft top or a bratty or subby bottom.
people talk about how lwj being a sub is no good because he’s repressed in all other aspects and in the bedroom is the one place he gets to let go and be his “aggressive, sadistic, dominant” self. um sure but if you’re looking at it like that then you can pull justifications for the opposite as well. maybe lwj should be a sub because in every other aspect of his life he’s had to be in control, strong and dependable, repressing all his desires, he deserves to let go and be looked after, be needy.
“lwj should top because he’s the more effeminate one, he reverses the traditional danmei tropes” okay but I was new to danmei when i watched cql/read mdzs and to me bottom lwj reverses the BL trope of the strong, silent, rich one topping. it’s never-ending, you can find all kinds of reasons to support why your preferred dynamic makes more sense.
I have nothing against topji, I was disappointed that bottomji wasn’t canon but I could appreciate mxtx’s choices, especially because it was a woman writing these men having unhinged sword sex. That said, I don’t enjoy much of the topji content out there because somehow the fandom seems to have taken the lwj from the extras/post-time-skip and made him their default version. coupled with the translations that don’t really do his lines justice, a lot of what I found endearing about lwj gets replaced for a lwj that's overly stoic, a mountain of muscles with caveman like responses and I just don’t find that attractive.
I don’t care if bottomji isn’t canon, if mxtx hates bottomji, if she says topping is in fact “intrinsic” to lwj’s personality. cql changed the story, changed the dynamic enough that I see it as connected to but still separate from mdzs. maybe cql lwj is a top too, idk. since they never confirm anything I like to believe they switch since cql wwx at least knows how gay sex works.

its been a year and just reading about the jiang sibs being happy is enough to make me SOB. THEY DESEREVED BETTER
It has been over 12 months since I fell into this hellhole, and I am still crying over Yunmeng siblings. I have no idea why I made this poor life decision, but it seems I am forever stuck bearing the consequences. I am sure there was a time in my life where I did not in fact spent a part of my waking hours crying over fictional sibling relationships and the tragedy of love your sibling so, so much yet being unable to save them, but alas, I no longer remember such peace. I am, however, enormously pleased and grateful to have had you all as company during this apocalypse. <3
In celebration of our constant agony, here is another compiled list of Yunmeng siblings/bros & co fics that I’ve read since my last rec list for all the anons in my inbox who have been asking for another list. Some of these I’ve rec’d individually as I’ve come across them but now it’s in a nice list for easy saving / reading! :)
For reference, my other rec lists are here and here.
in our respective ways ; an aging wound by @veliseraptor ; more gems from lise who really needs no introduction because everything she writes is perfect. jc and lwj searching for wwx for those 3 months during. post canon wwx and jc both tenuously trying to navigate the route to reconciliation.
display my heart for you to see by @souridealist ; jc-centric (chengqing / mature). an oldie but a goodie. this is mostly about jc and wq. post-canon if set in a world where jc secretly saves wq’s life. everything author writes is a goldmine of sheer mastery.
this blood in my mouth by @shanastoryteller ; sizhui-centric but the yunmeng bro content is glorious even if it’s a small part. i cannot articulate just how much i love this entire fic. sizhui is going through it, and i say he absolutely deserves to be angry for once.
lynchpin by @shanastoryteller ; canon-divergence. time traveling jc is one of my favorite tropes in the world. lots of meta opinions, but the yunmeng sibling content is amazing and everything i have ever indulgently wanted.
by any other name by @shanastoryteller ; canon-divergence au where wwx is gender-fluid and mxy performed the ritual too early leading to some problems. (keep the premise in mind esp if you’re not into that!) in any case, the yunmeng bros and jin ling relationship here is really good.
impossible be strange attempts by comfect ; very indulgent fix-it and i love it. jc crawls through the land of the dead to get his siblings back.
a grave so familiar by @the-first-refrain ; jc and wwx are both injured and stuck in a cave and are both just.. going through it. i wailed through the entire thing. the prose is amazing. jc hurts so good. he loves wwx so much. wwx loves him so much. trauma heavy references; tread softly with your heart.
the dock of the bay (wwx-centric) ; in the morning sun (sizhui-centric) ; still remain the same (jc-centric) by @lesyah ; post-canon character studies as basically everyone goes through it with some canon-typical demon kidnapping. not always the kindest take but love post-canon fics that allow characters to process and have unfair feelings about everything they’ve been put through. especially wwx who regardless of how good he is at moving and not holding grudges still deserves to be angry! the yunmeng bros reconciliation made my heart swell. there’s two other parts to this series that focus on lxc and lwj if you want to read.
just this once by sami ; jc is kidnapped and wwx comes to save him. i am SOFT. everything about this is too much.
utterly inevitable by sami ; post-canon. wwx decides to help by brazenly and unapologetically stomping all over xichen’s wounds and jc (finally) demands what is his. love that for them (i’m sorry xichen). this has xicheng in it and as a non-xicheng shipper, if i’m rec’ing it, you know it’s worth it.
five things that changed for jiang cheng after he regained his golden core (and one thing that never did) by @mikkeneko ; title says it all. it is so so good. i am still wailing on the floor over this one.
letters by @withbroombefore ; post-canon. realized while going through my previous rec lists that i’ve never added this to any of my lists. a mistake i must rectify because it’s so good! and sizhui getting to build a relationship with jiang cheng is just something that i need with my entire heart. there’s so much healing! everyone is moving forward and it is so amazing.
living ; lifeline by @withbroombefore ; canon-divergence. jyl and wwx live. rec’d these as soon as i read them and am definitely rec’ing them again because it is so so good. yunmeng siblings prioritizing each other. just 🥺
coda by @withbroombefore ; guanyin temple fix it. what we all deserved after watching these two dumbasses openly pine in the courtyard. there’s a sequel in the notes. also before i rec the author’s entire list of works, y’all should just go to their ao3 and read everything.
the trick is to keep breathing by @alessandriana ; assassination attempt on jc’s life in order to get to jin ling. literally everything i have ever wanted.
see me, feel me (listening to you) by ghost_honey ; wwx-centric. wwx gets cursed while on a night hunt and on brand doesn’t tell anyone about it because of his abysmal self esteem. juniors galore! plus jc telling him he’s a moron. wwx out here always seeing everything but the fact that everyone loves him.
happy reading! <3

Can you guys give me a guide of right characterization of the mdzs cast? Or link me into it? I want to make an attempt of jiang bashing in a time travel fix-it. ;w;
Idk how one would go about it? Here's how I see them:
WWX - Very playful, speaks in a musical tone of voice, probably the smartest and most observant person in the room, tactical, confident in his skill, teasing, will step in if someone is in danger.
Is shameless but blushes when he's sincerely complimented by LWJ. Can be ruthless when pushed. Forgiving and forgetful. He is also very adult-like and mature post-ressurection.
Can go a bit too far with his teasing. Sometimes crosses lines he shouldn't. Ignores personal boundaries that he shouldn't sometimes. But he is quick to apologise or realize his error.
LWJ - Very stoic. Speaks very precisely and will say the minimum required words to convey his point. Is very smart and observant. Confident in his skill. Can become sometimes flustered. Has will fuck you up energy.
As restrained as he is, he's more likely to attack than WWX. He's very decisive and doesn't hesitate. Not forgiving or forgetful. Very gentle and caring with people he loves.
He struggles to communicate. His concise speech and tendency to stay silent can lead to misunderstandings. Can sometimes stay the wrong thing when angered. Also ignores boundaries when he shouldn't sometimes.
WQ - Stern, no-nonsense. Very blunt with her words and straightforward. Strong but can be vulnerable. Can be a bit mean if the situation requires it but is never malicious.
WN - Soft and timid. Is gentle with everyone and very respectful. However, he has many suppress feelings in him that can burst out at times. Very attached to people he loves, inclusing LSZ and WWX.
JC - A mountain of insecurity with a sharp tongue. When torn between the right and easy, he takes the easy path. He can be mean and is always malicious about it. Blind to his privilege and has a victim mentality.
JYL - Soft and kind. Also blind to her own privilege. Always aims to maintain peace, regardless of the cost. Considers family harmony more important than personal feelings. But she loves with compassion and could possibly do better in a better environment.
JL - Prickly baby bear but obviously has a heart in a good place. With guidence, he will be a great man.
LSZ - Perfect angel. Just perfect angel. But seriously, very calm and steady but also a bit stubborn. He's a lot like LWJ, only softened a bit due to his gentle personality. He is also a lot like WN, only more confident.
LJY - Lively, helpful, righteous, and courageous. I can actually see him being the Lan Sect leader if Zewu-jun doesn't have any children.
JFM - Brow-beaten husband, trapped in a life he doesn't want. With YZY, he has great potential. Gives me so much mentally-exhausted by my family energy. A better wife would've made him a better father. I consider a spousal abuse victim.
YZY - Cruel, malicious, horrible mother who probably loves her children but is absolutely wretched about it. She is the main reason why her family suffers. She undermines JFM in every way.
JGS - Cunning, manipulative, and a shrewd politician. Not stupid but also outclassed by JGY. He'll take advantage of every opportunity presented to him, regardless of the consequences.
JGY - had the potential to go right but went wrong. Very intelligent, also very manipulative. Fairly apathetic if the situation doesn't affect him personally.
NHS - Very sharp and does care for others. Is somewhat traumatised by everything. Hardened because of life, because he's pushed into a position he has never wanted to be in. Very sly and cunning but out of necessity. Will only act if is pushed into a corner but he otherwise content to live and let live.
NMJ - Honorable and hot headed. Very bold but very rash. But he can be kind and when presented with proof, he will change his mind. Loves his brother but is also a nagging parent.
LXC - Honorable and cool headed. Confident and a little too cautious. Trusting but also blind to his privilege. Has a subtle shade of classism (excused NMJ for doing the same thing he criticized WWX for). Stubborn but will change his mind when presented with proof. Is fair-minded and loves his brother.
LQR - Typical Asian parent. Hard-headed, expects to be respected at all times, loves very much but will never show it. Is unfair sometimes. Very set in his ways and will probably never change his mind on some things. But the kind of parent you end up loving and respecting anyways because of a combination of upbringing and affection.
Note - this is how I characterize them for my fics. My baseline, so to speak. You will probably need to establish your own baseline. The best way is to read the novel a few times and read a few metas. I'd say that you explore blogs of people like rynne, plan-d-to-i, orion-flux, crossdressingdeath, grewlikefancyflowers, moonlightflowersblog? Off the top of my head, they're the ones who either write good metas or reblog resources that can help.

April recs
Alright, here we go! I’ve got seven recs for The Untamed and two for BNHA this month.
Tumblr media
THE UNTAMED
Starting with some Nie Huaisang content today, an imperial-with-magic AU, a couple of Wangxian fairytales in very different flavors, a WWX-adopted-by-someone-else AU (eventually Wangxian, but not the focus), and a postcanon Wangxian casefile.
here's to upright men by @isozyme
It had been shaping up to be a really lovely party, and honestly, quite a nice cultivation conference in general. Instead, his last surviving brother was exchanging polite bows with Jin Rulan, and Nie Huaisang was going to spend four days on edge.
Fantastic NHS characterization in this, messy and traumatized and angry and a little hopeful.
The sparrow's curious song by @mhalachai
One day in Lanling, a little blind beggar picks Nie Huaisang’s pocket, which is the most interesting thing to happen to him in months. (AKA the one where Nie Huaisang adopts A-Qing.)
I am here for all A-Qing AU happy endings, of course, but Nie Huaisang is very compelling in this: the contrast between his perceptiveness and his ditzy act, struggling with his grief and vengeance, and A-Qing’s presence reminding him that he’s forgotten about his future.
The Concubine Mo Chronicles by EnigmaTree
An AU where the Lan Xichen is the Emperor; Lan Wangji is the Crown Prince; the Jin, Jiang, and Nie are Dukedoms; and even 13 years dead, Wei Wuxian is still the most feared man in all of China. Newly resurrected, Wei Wuxian would love nothing more than to cultivate a core and go become a rogue cultivator. Except, there's something very suspicious going on in the Imperial Palace, and while Wei Wuxian might not be able to help Lan Wangji in solving it, the unassuming and soft-spoken "Prince-Concubine Mo" sure can.
I very rarely recs WIPs - the first two stories in the series are complete, but the overall plot is not - but I’m enjoying this story so much and I wanna drag more people in with me. Basically, imagine if instead of a murder mystery roadtrip, you get an inner-palace murder mystery intrigue fest, with all the additional dangers of playing on JGY’s turf? A WWX who is both fully a gremlin and also very very dangerous, and written that way? Delightful.
Restoration by @jelenedra
They say he was thrown into Luanzang Gang by the man who killed his parents; they say that he is an immortal cultivator who had been in a deep trance until the Wen sect disturbed his rest and incurred his wrath; they say that he is the fierce corpse of a cultivator who had somehow regained his mind and his spiritual powers.     When Lan Wangji sees him for the first time, he understands why people talk.
Meng Yao wants safety. Xue Yang wants vengeance. The Sunshot Campaign wants victory. Yiling Laozu provides, for a price.
This has such a gorgeous fairytale feeling to it - but one where you're not sure if there's going to be a happy ending or someone's going to die gruesomely until the very end. (Or both!) Lots of weird eerie Burial Mounds in this one, lots of fix-its for various characters, and a very different but still epic Wangxian romance.
Winter Bloom by Niitza / @princessniitza
When lotuses bloom in Wei Ying’s pond in the middle of winter, he recognizes them at once for what they really are: an auspicious sign. It cannot be meant for him, though. He is nothing but a modest farmer. Such a miracle has to have appeared for someone else: a cultivator, a nobleman, a king.
So lovely, in a more classically fairytale way than Restoration. A little magical, a little romance, and a lot of just rewards.
what builds a home by @stratisphyre
Two children, Meng Shi decides, cannot possibly be that much more work than one. On the run from the Jin, Meng Shi encounters another young boy in need of love, a family and a home.
Wei Wuxian and Meng Yao as adoptive brothers is fantastic (the found family feels are strong with this one, and keep getting stronger as you go), and I love the way Lan Wangji shows up later and the plot fallout from that, but there’s also a lot of quietly fascinating timeline shifts that get revealed as the story progresses that I enjoyed.
through the warmth, through the cold (keep running til we're there) by @fleurdeliser
Five months into his travels, Wei Wuxian gets word that Lan Wangji has disappeared. Everything changes.
Creepy, tense casefile with some cool resentful energy stuff (haunted garden!), Wei Wuxian making other people terrified because he’s terrified for LWJ, having to team up with Jiang Cheng, and a lovely ending: this fic has it all!
BNHA recs under the cut!
BNHA
The Best Worst Case Scenario by maskedfangirl (Shinsou/Midoriya)
Shinsou is a promising student with a history of trauma, a Quirk that landed him in a residential care facility for dangerous kids, and a perfectly reasonable distrust of adults. Aizawa knows immediately that he's going to get over-invested in this one.
You can tell Shinsou is one of my favorites because I love watching him suffer (until the author makes it better)! But yeah, lots of that h/c goodness here, plus LGBT+ feels and a great married EraserMic.
Cotyledon by Sholosha (Shinsou/Midoriya/Todoroki)
It's his second year at UA, and Shinsou is finally, finally, transferring to the hero course. He's ready, he thinks, or hopes— either way, it doesn't matter, 'cause he's going to show everyone he's got what it takes. And it also doesn't matter that the longer he spends in the program, the more he can't stop thinking about a certain freckled wannabe-friend, and the more he's noticing that a certain stoic classmate is paying him a lot more attention than he'd like.
Whatever. Irrelevant. He's here to be a hero, not make friends. Even if they would be the first ones he's made in...ever. But it's his second year, and he's going to make it count by focusing on what's important.
His name is Shinsou Hitoshi, and he's going to be a goddamn hero.
Really gorgeous poly slow burn. Heavy on the boarding school & threesome romance/kink discovery aspects, but there's also a great casefile subplot midway through.

The Damage You Do: ch 19, pt 6
Previously
~
“Problems?” wwx asked, smiling up at his dom as he continued to try to reach for the tap.
“Yes,” the other man replied calmly, even as he was still unable to get quite the right hold of it to safely turn it on. “A-Ying’s ass is impeding me.”
wwx blinked up at the man, his smile wobbling before he burst into laughter, still soft and sleepy, but laughter that echoed from deep within him no less. “It is pretty big, isn’t it?”
lwj hummed in agreement as he finally managed to get the shower head going, warmth splashing down around them from all sides now. “It is perfect,” he added, hand flexing around it as he leaned closer to wwx’s ear to whisper—as much as one could whisper in the loud splatter of water on stone—”I quite liked watching my cock as it disappeared between your cheeks. Perhaps, one day, you’ll allow me to record us.”
wwx’s thighs squeezed slightly, even as he hummed noncommittally, uncertain if the sound had even been loud enough for his dom to hear over the shower—not that the man seemed to need an answer now. He probably would let lwj record them—quite liked the idea, if he were being honest. He’d need assurances it would never go farther than their own eyes, of course. He knew well enough that leaked videos could ruin people’s lives, as unfair as that was to the victims.
”And maybe some of lwj’s employees could see it too, if it was part of a sex thing…” wwx mused to himself, the thought that he should be embarrassed to be contemplating well… enjoying being embarrassed and wanting more of that feeling, slipping away into the ether of contentment. Later. Later he would worry about the way his brain was so easily sliding into this life and what his dom—and apparently he himself—wanted in sex. Not now though, with lwj’s body pressed so securely to his own, somehow grounding and removing him from reality at the same time.
wwx let his eyes flutter shut as lwj sat them into an alcove that had been cut into one wall of the shower. It was still stone, sliding rough and smooth all at once beneath his skin as lwj rearranged them so wwx was sitting in his lap, but it seemed to be a small pool of water as well, and when he shifted his feet and they reached a wall, he could feel water flowing down the stone as though it were a waterfall.
“Nice,” he mumbled, turning his nose into lwj’s neck, somewhat annoyed at the lack of anything to suck on—seriously, though? Where had the sudden oral fixation come from? Sure, he liked gum and lollipops and chewing on pens and okay, so maybe a proper oral fixation wasn’t that surprising. But still! Where the fuck had it come from!?
lwj hummed quietly back at him, his hand wandering up to run through wwx’s hair. His dom huffed slightly when wwx moaned, muttering some string of appreciative expletives as his knots were gently tugged free. lwj had already finger combed his hair on the drive here, but his hair was a menace and already a mess and new knots. Luckily, the fact that he was having to take care of wwx’s hair again didn’t seem to dissuade the man from doing so.

idk If you are still accepting prompts for the soulmate au or not but if you are, can we see WWX comforting LWJ after finding out LWJ has also lost his soulmate please >_<
(P.S it's such an interesting concept!!!)
Lan Zhan was wearing mourning robes.
Lan Zhan came to Yiling in the plainest, roughest robes Wei Ying had ever seen touch his jade-white skin, and the only ornament on his body was the Lan passage token hanging at his waist.
Even the spired silver headpiece was gone, leaving Lan Zhan’s forehead ribbon to hold his hair by itself.
Although he still can’t quite fathom why, Wei Wuxian was so startled at the sight of his friend’s somber face that he hid behind Jiang Cheng when Lan Zhan tried to make him come back to Gusu for punishment, which resulted in Lan Zhan trying to lure him out again like a frightened animal and then holding his hand all the way back to the Jiang camp.
(Wei Wuxian isn’t going to think about that, though. His crush on Lan Zhan doesn’t mean anything, because his sworn zhiji--the one who knows him, even if his dead soulmate never got the chance to--has a fated sweetheart of his own.)
But the question of Lan Zhan’s mourning garments remained unsolved, and it takes a good four days for Wei Wuxian to figure it out by observing the strange new kindness all the other Lan disciples seem to be treating him with.
His uncle must have been killed, he realizes, after they travel from Jiangling to Qinghe and reconvene with the rest of their allies. Lan Qiren’s golden core was bound to the wards around Lotus Pier, so if Wen Xu tore it down...
Or else Lan Xichen was the one who was dead, which would be objectively worse. But Lan Xichen turns out to be very much alive when Wei Wuxian walks into Nie-zongzhu’s meeting room, and his robes are the pale blue of an early summer morning, just as they were in Gusu; so Wei Wuxian is forced to admit defeat, and sulk at Jiang Cheng’s side until his Shijie pulls him aside later that day to give him a laden dinner tray.
“Shijie, I can’t eat all this!” he laughs, smiling at the pot of pork-rib soup (with mushrooms instead of lotus roots, since mushrooms are the vegetable of choice in the Unclean Realm) and a bowl of steaming greens, which looks very much like something they might have had in Gusu--but better-tasting, of course, because Jiang Yanli had cooked it instead of the Lan kitchen staff.
“It’s not just for you, A-Xian,” she scolds. “Lan-er-gongzi hasn’t been eating much lately, and Zewu-jun asked me to send you to cheer him up a little. Will you go?”
Wei Wuxian’s heart begins aching again at the memory of Lan Zhan dressed in mourning white, but he only nods and lets Yanli plant a kiss on his cheek before wandering away to the guest house where Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen are quartered--close by Nie Mingjue’s quarters, since Zewu-jun has his own set of rooms there, but elected to remain with his brother instead to help him through his grief.
After he passes through the little rock garden in the courtyard, Wei Wuxian hears the soft notes of Lan Zhan’s guqin on the other side of the wall--playing what sounds like Inquiry, the spirit-questioning music--but then the qin goes silent, right before the door slides open to reveal a tall figure in silver and blue standing behind it.
“Young Master Wei,” Lan Xichen greets him, stepping back to let Wei Wuxian in and slipping out into the garden after he crosses the threshold. “How kind of you to visit! Wangji, look who’s come to see you!”
Lan Zhan looks up from his qin with black-rimmed eyes and inclines his head. “Wei Ying.”
What made you like this, Lan Zhan? Wei Wuxian thinks desperately, sliding gracefully to his knees at Lan Xichen’s writing desk to lay out the dinner dishes. Who’s been taken from you, sweetheart? It’s not Lan-xiansheng, and not your brother, so who?
“You’re in luck tonight, Lan Zhan!” he chirps instead, filling a bowl with Yanli’s steaming soup and trying not to sigh in relief when Lan Zhan comes over to sit beside him. “Shijie sent you her famous soup, so you’d better not hurt her feelings by not eating enough, all right?”
“Many thanks to Jiang-guniang,” his friend says quietly, serving himself some of the greens. “And to you, Wei Ying.”
“Eat a little more,” Wei Wuxian urges, as Lan Zhan starts picking at the greens like a small, exhausted bird picking at a heap of grain. “You can’t keep your strength up like this, ah? Here, open your mouth, and I’ll feed you.”
He doesn’t have the slightest idea what possessed him to make such an offer--or what possessed Lan Zhan, that he would take it--but Lan Zhan parts his lips obediently, and Wei Wuxian slips a spoonful of soup between them and watches in perfect contentment as he swallows the rich broth down. “That’s better,” he coaxes, filling the bowl to its rim again and passing Lan Zhan the rice. “We’re fighting, you know, and you can’t do that without food no matter how strong your cultivation is.”
But then he freezes with the rice paddle in his hands and blinks, because Lan Zhan is holding his chopsticks up in front of his mouth in turn.
“...Lan Zhan?”
“Eat the greens,” Lan Zhan tells him, and refuses to move until Wei Wuxian snatches the clump of water spinach with his teeth and chews it into mush. “You must keep your strength up, too.”
Lan Zhan’s ears are burning red, and Wei Wuxian’s heart skips another beat as he takes the game a step further, leaning across the table with his own teacup so that his friend can drink from it. “Then--then, Lan Zhan, you have to drink the tea! Go on!”
They finish the rest of the meal this way, feeding each other and smiling behind their chopsticks when someone gets flustered and turns away--but they always turn back to each other again, and again, until the pots of soup and rice and spinach are sparkling clean.
“There,” Wei Wuxian whispers, when Lan Zhan takes a clean silk handkerchief from his sleeve and offers it to him across his upturned palms. “Don’t you feel much better now?”
“Much better,” Lan Zhan whispers back, his cheeks flushing like new spring flowers as Wei Wuxian gets back to his feet. “Thank you, Wei Ying.”

wangxian fic rec list pt.2
you can find part one here!
as usual, this will be kept under a keep reading so it doesn’t clog up the dashboard. i actually reblogged my original post and added to it then accidentally deleted it but i have a crap ton more recommendations anyway! there’s a lot of angst in this list because apparently i love putting my heart through a meat grinder
there are some heavy fics included this time, but i really wanted to include some that explored the issue of mental health and recovery, especially in these difficult times, so make sure you look out for the TW if those fics aren’t your cup of tea
since tumblr’s new update prevents posts with links from appearing in the tags, i would really appreciate if people could reblog so anyone who needs a fic rec can see this!
notion summary page: here (i only put my favourites in this tumblr list, so if you would like even more recommendations, please read the notion summary for basically all of my bookmarks on ao3)
Tumblr media
something to make your heart ache
tempo rubato by @spodumene
angst, fluff, smut, multi-chaptered, modern au
guys when i say this fic changed my life i really mean it i think i binged it all within a single night and luckily the last chapter came out the next day and i literally was beside myself with excitement; it is heartbreaking and so beautifully written, i keep going back to read it again and again it’s just THAT good
complementarity by @besanii
angst, fluff, multi-chaptered, cql au
i’ve always been a fan of beth’s works (if anyone wants to screech with me about her shattered mirror’s fic I AM HERE) but this was so much angst i literally felt my heart cave in on itself like it was actually painful holy shit she is such a compelling writer and this is one of my favourites even though it HURTS ME
and here comes the summertime by ribena
angst, fluff, multi-chaptered, modern au
LWJ PLS USE YOUR WORDS FOR ONCE this is peak lwj being a dumbass guys i really can’t with this boy but this is such a cute fic of wangxian falling in love and you can really see how they genuinely go from being two people who have no chance of being anything to SOULMATES
总有一天; a place to hide (can’t find one near) by yiqie
angst, trauma, modern au, trigger warning: suicide
this fic rec is gonna kick off some of our heavier recs for the list; yiqie is definitely one of my favourite ao3 writers and i am really excited for the next update of this fic, it deals with some really important mental health topics and it doesn’t shy away from the reality of how scary things can be. i’ve personally been thinking a lot more about mental health in general during my time in isolation and it’s gotten me to reflect more on my own wellbeing as well. this is beautifully written, and obviously it’s not going to encapsulate everyone’s personal experience but i think it’s a great step in recognising that mental health is real and something we should be looking out for
there’s no promised goodbye here by @yuisakii
angst, fluff, trauma, modern au, trigger warning: mental health
i saw this fic on twt and i thought it was gonna be a short cute wholesome fic about wangxian being broken up but not really bc wwx is dumb BUT this turned out to be so much more and i’m so appreciative; it portrays not a perfect relationship but one that is under the works and one that will undoubtedly require much more work in the future but it’s reality and it’s true and i think that makes it beautiful, there are discussions of mental health and how that affects relationships and how people learn to put themselves back together again with love and support and i think that’s the best part of this fic
take yourself home by ribena
angst, fluff, trauma, multi-chaptered, modern au, trigger warning: suicidal ideation
this was a surprising fic i didn’t expect it to be as heavy as it was but it was beautifully handled and it’s so important to me to see mental health depicted in different ways; everyone deals with their problems in a different way and someone is struggling could seem objectively like they’re doing okay and i think it’s great that there’s a fic that recognises that, this also gives a little spotlight on the things that people use to try and cope with their wellbeing, it could be the smallest thing but a lot of the time that’s all it takes
some things go forward by everythingispoetry
angst, fluff, trauma, multi-chaptered, modern au, trigger warning: medical recovery
this is a little lighter but i think this is one of the most important; the journey to recovery from any medical condition isn’t something to be taken lightly and i think this fic deals with almost everything that it will encapsulate, it’s a beautiful story that deals with the ups and downs of medical recovery and how you really need to learn to forgive yourself for maybe not being able to do everything you previously wanted to, it’s a hopeful story which is also so important because there is always hope for you no matter what
something to soothe your heart
you’ve ruined my life (by not being mine) by @nothing-but-color
fluff, light angst, smut, multi-chaptered, modern au
guys this fic is so beautiful omfg it’s so CUTE and i think it really nails some of the characterisation it really sets up their relationship so well and it delves into some other issues of wangxian’s parents being uh not great parents lmfao but it’s just cute and wholesome and wangxian discovering the joy of being in a relationship
this river runs to you by sundiscus
fluff, light angst, yearning, modern au
DRAGONS AND MAGIC GUYS HOLY SHIT this was a fic i just sat down and binged in like probably an hour and it’s SO GOOD, the plot, the characterisation, the amount of thought and care that went into developing this was so good and it’s beautiful guys truly a wonderful fic
heliotrope (eternal love) by avenqelic
fluff, light angst, modern au
flowers and their meanings need i say more???? this was so wholesome and wwx is such a dumbass but we love him for it and there’s so much yearning and pining in this it’s almost angst but it’s not bc there’s so much SOFT content in this we love it
lay us down (we’re in love) by mme_anxious
fluff, modern au
guys this is just a short wholesome cute fic to soothe your heart from all the angst i’ve put in this list IT’S PERFECT domestic wangxian will always trump everything as much as i love putting my heart through the works and this is just pEAK wangxian content
it’s you, it was always you by myung
fluff, light angst, cql au
guys wwx is such a dumbass but he’s a bby and we love him and this was such cute wholesome barely there angst content AND THE PINING wangxian are so dumb but we love them for it this was just something to truly soothe my heart as the heading suggests so yes pls read this after all the angst
with absolute splendour by @veliseraptor
fluff, light angst, yunmeng bros, cql au
THIS IS THE FIC I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WAITING FOR guys jc being an angry grape wanting to plan shijie’s and wwx’s wedding is genuinely the content i have always wanted and i’m always so sad that there’s like barely any of it but this fic captures it PERFECTLY and it’s the yunmeng reconciliation i have been praying for
the dragon’s bride by jaws_3
fluff, light angst, light smut, beauty and the beast au
lwj bby you need to learn to use your words bc then THIS HAPPENS but guys this was such a cool take on beauty and the beast au and it’s pretty spectacular wangxian are DOMESTIC HUSBANDS before they are even husbands but the writing was breathtakingly good so yes pls read this
anyway, here’s wuji by @kakikaeru
fluff, light angst, post-cql, focus on lan jingyi
okay this is more background wangxian BUT THIS FIC IS SO GOOD, the next one in the series (focussing on jin ling) is also spectacular so pls read them both, but guys LAN JINGYI BEST BOY and he’s in love omfg wangxian being overprotective adorable husbands looking after all their children is just what we LIVE for
something to make you laugh

15. a gentle “i love you” whispered after a soft kiss, followed immediately by a stronger kiss, for the ask prompts, if you please 🙏
shifting ground
His footsteps falter and come to a stop before the screen that separates the bedroom from the rest of the chamber. Through the sheer silk screen, he can make out the shape of a person sitting on the edge of the bed facing him; they’re dressed head-to-toe in red and gold silks with a red veil obscuring their face from view, but it is a wedding. Their wedding. There could be no one else.
And yet he hesitates at the threshold, his heart suddenly seized with a familiar sense of dread as he stares at the silhouette of his bride there on the bed.
What if, his traitorous mind whispers, what if this is all a farce? What if that isn’t him, but only his shadow? What if—
—what if he doesn’t remember?
He clenches his fist to stop them from trembling, even as his breath shudders on the exhale, the sound harsh against the quiet of the room.
On the other side of the partition, the figure shifts.
“Lan Zhan?” Another shift. “Is that you?”
Relief floods through him at the familiar voice, the familiar upward inflection at the end of his name. He would know that voice anywhere, and it gives him strength enough to walk around the screen and to the bed. His companion shifts again in discomfort and tilts their head up in his direction, one hand reaching out towards him blindly.
“Lan Zhan?”
Lan Wangji takes the outstretched hand, feeling the cool fingers slip into the cradle of his palm, slotting seamlessly against his as he sits down on the bed.
“Wei Ying,” he murmurs. “I’m here.”
The edges of the veil flutter with Wei Wuxian’s loud sigh of relief.
“Oh, good,” he laughs. “I thought it was some arrogant little prick who thought they might try to steal the bride away from his wedding night right under the groom’s nose!”
It’s meant as a joke, but Lan Wangji still feels a stab of irrational fear that has him tightening his grip on Wei Wuxian’s hand.
“Do not joke about that,” he says, breathing heavily through his nose as he tries to calm his racing heart.
Wei Wuxian is quiet for a moment, head still turned towards him, before he turns his hand over in Lan Wangji’s to return his grip. He strokes his thumb over the back of Lan Wangji’s hand in gentle, soothing motions.
“Sorry,” he says quietly.
In the silence that follows, he can feel the way Wei Wuxian’s pulse thrums beneath his fingertips—quick, erratic, alive. To think he had lost this, that he had allowed Wei Wuxian to slip from his grasp because of his own pride and foolish desire to shelter him from harm—he knows he is lucky to have been given another chance to make amends, to do this right. He won’t let it go to waste.
He turns to Wei Wuxian and rests a hand on the top of his head very, very gently.
“Wei Ying,” he says, and feels Wei Wuxian’s breath hitch at his touch. “I’m going to remove the veil now.”
“A-Alright,” Wei Wuxian agrees.
As the red silk slips from his head, the phoenix crown beneath it comes into view, its wings outstretched, each golden feather painstakingly shaped and etched to give it the appearance of life. It rests on his dark hair, held in place by pins and braids woven and twisted upward to reveal the gentle slope of his neck. His grey eyes are bright in the glow of the candlelight, looking up at him through long, dark lashes as his cheeks colour prettily under the intensity of Lan Wangji’s regard.
Wei Wuxian has always been objectively beautiful. On the night of their first wedding, Lan Wangji had been stunned by the beautiful young man beside him. But now that beautiful young man has come into his own as the Crown Prince of the Phoenix Tribe, a High God in his own right, breathtaking and powerful all at once. But in Lan Wangji’s eyes, beneath all of the power and finery, he is still Wei Ying, the unruly little bird spirit who had crash landed in his courtyard in the Nine Heavens one day and refused to leave.
“Lan Zhan...” Wei Wuxian squirms under his gaze. “Stop staring at me like that. I’m not going anywhere.”
Lan Wangji exhales, his lips tugging into a rueful smile.
“Sorry,” he says. “Force of habit.”
“Ah.” He scratches the bridge of his nose awkwardly. “Right, sorry.”
As awkward silence falls between them, Lan Wangji curses himself for his cowardice. When he had first realised there was still hope for the two of them to be together again despite Wei Wuxian’s rebirth and subsequent loss of memories, he had sworn to do whatever it took to get him back. But now that he had succeeded and Wei Wuxian was once again by his side—where was his conviction now?
He takes a deep breath and lets the veil fall to the floor.
“Wei Ying.” He rests his hand over the soft jawline and runs his thumb over one cheek. “You look beautiful.”
Wei Wuxian blushes and averts his gaze with an embarrassed laugh.
“Aiyo, Lan Zhan, you don’t need to say such sappy things to me,” he says. “I’m just happy to be here with you, so you don’t need to—”
Whatever he wants to say next is cut off when Lan Wangji bends down and brushes their lips together, feather-light, barely there. He gasps into the breath of space between them, eyes wide and cheeks red, his whole body trembling beneath his touch. Lan Wangji pulls away just enough to look into his eyes, presses their foreheads together, content to just bask in his presence.
“I love you,” he whispers.
Wei Wuxian goes very, very still. So still that, for a horrible moment, Lan Wangji is afraid he may have overstepped, frightened him off with the intensity of his feelings; he has only just gotten him back, and the lines between Wei Wuxian’s lives still often blur at the edges and overlap. He’s being greedy, asking for more than he should—
There are hands cupping his own face then, and Wei Wuxian is surging forward, upwards, crowding into the scant space between them to press their lips together again. There is nothing soft, nothing gentle or hesitant about this kiss—Wei Wuxian’s mouth moves against his as his body does, closer and closer, clinging to him like he wants nothing more than for their bodies to meld together.
It takes little more than a second for Lan Wangji to get his bearings, and then he’s taking control of the kiss, pulling him closer with one hand at the back of his head, the other splayed wide on his lower back. He kisses him like a man starved, gorging himself on the achingly familiar taste and feel of Wei Wuxian’s lips, the sound of his whimpers, high and breathy at the back of his throat.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian gasps, breaking away to bury his face against his neck, panting against his collarbone. “Lan Zhan, I—” He clutches at Lan Wangji’s shoulders with a shudder. “I know I’m not who I once was. I know you must be disappointed—”
Lan Wangji kisses him again to silence him. When he pulls away this time, Wei Wuxian’s eyes are glassy and dark with desire.
“I love you.” He presses a kiss to the corner of his mouth, “No matter who you are.” Another to his jaw. “Or once were.” His throat. “I love you.”
“Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian coaxes him away from his neck to look him in the eye, earning a disgruntled noise from Lan Wangji. He laughs and presses a kiss to the tip of his nose to shush him. “I love you too.”
This is enough, Lan Wangji thinks as he trails heated kisses along the column of Wei Wuxian’s bared throat. Wei Ying, having you here with me again is more than enough.

For prompts-- lan wangji teaches wwx how to do something new! ❤️❤️ Thank you for the food 😊
Oof. I’m sorry this took so long. Still, it’s done! Soft and sweet! Thank you for the prompt and I hope you like it!
Oh and I Think This Is the Best Day of My Life
It’s late, probably, when Wei Wuxian stumbles toward the kitchens. It’s hard to tell when the sky is dark and he’s just waking up after a nice nap (he’d call it sleep, but he reserves that term for the peaceful rest he gets when Lan Zhan’s in bed with him.) Anyway, the Lans aren’t out and as far as he knows, he’s never woken up naturally before chenshi.
He can see some light in the building brushing the stones outside its windows a homely orange. He hopes this means there’s someone in there and not that a fire’s been made for overnight baking. Fires, unlike people, don’t respond to his natural charisma and furthermore can't fold dumplings. He’s really craving dumplings.
His stomach growls and he nearly growls back. It’s gotten far too comfortable as Lan Zhan’s husband. There was really no need to be woken from sleep just to eat.
He reaches the door, but can’t smell anything baking. Hopefully there’s a person, then, a generous Lan willing to feed the spouse of their Chief Cultivator. Wei Wuxian’s face molds easily into a pout and he slides open the door.
On the other side, Lan Zhan tilts his eyes up from the cabbage he’s chopping for a brief moment to meet Wei Wuxian’s surprised gaze. He’d expected him to be stuck in a late meeting or finishing letters where his husband could be sure he wouldn’t disturb Wei Wuxian’s sleep. Honestly, he’d prefer that Lan Zhan stay near him, even if he’d be kept up, but he appreciates the consideration.
Instead, Lan Zhan is standing in the kitchen still wearing the Chief Cultivator getup, sans outermost robe, but it’s trailing sleeves are tied back and his face is relaxed in a way it never is while performing his duties. Deft, calloused hands gather a bundle of onions and begin dicing them.
Wei Wuxian pulls the door closed behind him and drifts over, confused. Had Lan Zhan been so focused that he missed dinner? It must be. They hadn’t been able to see each other today, as occasionally happened, and Wei Wuxian hadn’t been there to use his Lan Zhan charming skills to get him to put off his duties long enough to eat.
"Is this a late dinner, Lan er-gege?" He can't help the teasing tone. He's impressed that Lan Zhan's awake at whichever hour it is.
Lan Zhan only gives him a pointed look.
"What? You should've eaten earlier. Just 'cause I'm not there to nag doesn't mean the Chief Cultivator should fast. You need food in you!"
Lan Zhan's gaze slips briefly to the side and then back down at the dark, reddish liquid he's mixing, likely a dipping sauce or glaze. It's the Lan Zhan equivalent of an eyeroll. Wei Wuxian just laughs and leans forward, picking up another finished bowl of liquid and swirling it around.
"So what'cha making? I came in here for a snack but the aunties already left, so I'll have to bother you instead."
"A snack?" His husband's voice is low and unimpressed, but teasing.
"Sure! I woke up and this weak stomach won't leave me alone, so I came to beg for some dumplings. What? Are you worried I'll eat out my welcome in midnight snacks?"
"Was your dinner not sufficient?"
He waves a hand dismissively. "Oh no, it was great! Though not your cooking, of course. I much prefer the chili oil and spices you add to whatever it is they teach Lans to make. Only you can fulfill my needs so well!" Honestly, Wei Wuxian can't remember having dinner, or really much of the last day at all if he tries to think about it, but it's not like that's entirely uncommon. And he usually remembers to eat! So he must've at some point. The disciples know to deliver his meals to the jingshi.
"So when will it be done? And what are you making? I hope you know I'll steal some, Lan Zhan. What's yours is mine!"
"If you are impatient, you may have that." He points to further down the table where a tray of food sits. It's disappointingly gray in tone; he'd much rather wait for whatever it is Lan Zhan's making.
"What's this? Your dinner? You really should have eaten it when it was still warm. Most of those people don't deserve your time, anyway!" Wei Ying is toeing the line, close to hating his husband's position. Sure, it's fulfilling and impactful, but Lan Zhan's really worse off for it and those chirping Sect Leaders monopolize his time which means that Wei Ying can't.
"It is not."
"Ah? Not what? It's definitely cold by now!" He pokes it to prove his point.
"It is not mine."
"What, did someone else refuse to eat, too? You Lans may not act human, but you are! Food is important! Though really, how could the Chief Cultivator lower himself so? Let the poor disciple get his own food!"
Wei Wuxian hears a conspicuous huff. A tiny smile sits on Lan Zhan's face, the crooked one that means he's laughing at someone and Wei Wuxian is the only other person in the room.
"It is yours."
That... makes a lot of sense. "It is?"
"You were asleep on the floor when I came in at xushi. The food was uneaten."
Well. That explains why he couldn't remember most of today. "You moved me to the bed? Aww that's so sweet! Oh! And your cooking! You stayed up to feed me?”
"Mn. Wei Ying needs to eat." Lan Zhan is tossing a bowl of chopped-up greens now. They are covered in a promising orange, though.
Wei Wuxian laughs, a little sheepishly. "I guess I do."
"Do you know why you were unconscious?"
"Uhh... no? I don't really remember anything past breakfast." He'd planned to spend yesterday in his little workshop close to the jingshi (separate so their house wouldn't be destroyed by a stray talisman) but he didn't know why he would've..."Wait! I-" He clears his throat. "I do. Remember that transportation talisman I made? For Jin Ling? Well, I think I tested it, and apparently the amount of energy it uses isn't much different from the traditional version, despite the shorter distance. It worked though! I got to the jingshi!"
The talisman was a joke, meant to transport the user only a short distance away. It would be a perfect escape from a wall, though. Jin Ling might refuse to speak with him for a week after he gifts it, but in his opinion it's worth it to give Jin Ling's friends material to tease him with.
"Mn. Your spiritual energy is not sufficient to use them." He's pouring oil on his creation, now.
"Well I know that now!" He wasn't planning to use it again. At least not before making a few tweaks. He couldn't endanger his nephew, after all! "Soooo... what'cha making?"
"Dumplings."
"What, really?! Oh, when will they be done?"
"I am almost ready to fold them."
"That really doesn't answer my question. Will it be soon? And how soon is soon? I don't want to fall asleep right here!"
"If you cannot wait, you may help." Lan Zhan says, holding out a thin circle of dough.
He's about to protest. After all, the juniors all say he can't cook without making a victim of the intended recipient, but if he is the one it's for... he rinses his hands off in a nearby water basin and takes the dough. He's never had a problem eating his own cooking.
Lan Zhan motions him over to his side of the table and picks up another circle. There's a dozen of them, perfectly shaped and ready to be made into dumplings. Wei Wuxian had seen Shijie and the servants make these many times. Even though it's been a lifetime since then, he still gets the basic theory.
He spoons a generous helping of the filling into the middle of the dough and brings the edges to the center, so it looks like a lumpy ball with a strange flowery part at the top. He grins and looks up at Lan Zhan.
His husband looks horrified.
Still, he moves slowly and carefully takes the overflowing ball of goodness, gently prying it open. "What, no! Put it in the steamer, Lan Zhan!"
There's a heavy sigh that speaks of the many hours of headache Lan Zhan has lived through today. "Wei Ying, no." He separates the ball back into a circle and removes some of the filling. "Do it like this. Only use a little." When there's what Lan Zhan has deemed to be a perfectly sized pat of filling, he brings two opposite points on the rim of the circle together and folds the ends so that they nearly, but not quite, touch this middle point. "Do not make it like a ball. It should lay on its side." Then he presses the lined up edges together so that they're sealed. At this point, he takes Wei Wuxian's limp, empty fingers and runs them along the edge. "If they are not sealed, the filling will come out." He hands the completed dumpling to Wei Wuxian. "Now you may put this in the steamer."
Wei Wuxian is thankful he remembers to brush oil on the bottom of the steamer before putting Lan Zhan’s dumpling in it. He’s trying to prove he’s not a hopeless cook, after all.
When he turns back, Lan Zhan hands him a slip of dough and picks up his own. Wei Wuxian gets the message and goes to stand beside him. His husband is a great teacher, but typically he’s instructing disciples in the best method to banish spirits or giving lectures on boring topics like the Lan ancestors. Here, though, he’s simply teaching Wei Wuxian how to fold dumplings. The domesticity of it brings a smile to his face
Together, they add the filling and fold the dough, Lan Zhan adjusting his technique with warm hands around Wei Wuxian’s own. In this way they work for several minutes, each revelling in the peace and intimacy of being here together, working together. He thinks of Lotus Pier’s kitchens, a nighthunt’s campfire, and the warmth of an oven, a little cabin rising behind it. He thinks the feeling would stay the same, no matter where they might be.
“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan.” Contentment fills him, and suddenly he’s tired, eyes heavy in this comfortable atmosphere.
“Mn.”
Wei Wuxian adds filling to the last bit of dough and leans into his husband’s side as he folds it, resting his head on a broad shoulder. The dumpling doesn’t look like Lan Zhan’s, still a bit uneven, but he lays it in the steamer and laughs a little at the difference between his and Lan Zhan’s.
“Lan Zhan’s are perfect.” His voice is happy, blissful.
His husband puts an arm around his waist and puts on the steamer’s lid. “Wei Ying’s are unique.”
That startles a laugh from Wei Wuxian and he nudges Lan Zhan’s side, urging him to get the dumplings cooking and soothe his rumbling stomach. He settles by the table, chin resting on one hand. The fire, newly started by his husband, warms him.
Note: Chenshi is the shichen or two-hour block after maoshi, the Lan wake-up time. Chenshi goes from 7:00-8:59 am. Xushi goes from 7:00-8:59 pm. This is using the traditional system instead of the Song Dynasty system, which starts on even hours.
