I know I complain about it in the tags a lot, but I can't believe this season of Riverdale might actually be my favorite. I care about the plots, the acting this season is top notch, and the writing (while frustrating and still very riverdale) is actually REALLY good this season. It feels as cohesive as season 1. Riverdale has seemed so scattered lately. In terms of plot, in terms of character arcs, in terms of timeline. And don't get me started on reality vs fantasy and our suspension of disbelief on a LOT. (We're not gonna talk about last season's ridiculous comet superpowers nonsense.)
But this season has been consistent (as far as fiction goes) with the timeline and the character arcs. The drama finally has some depth, due in large to the time period, and they've tackled some pretty big issues. The most I've seen in a *single season. I think if this wasn't the last season, I wouldn't bitch as much. I was kind of hoping they'd let us off easy in the final season and so far I've had to deal with every one of my favorite ships not being together, mostly because of the era and all of the many biases the 1950s had.

If you had to choose: Barchie or Rory/Logan?!
Oh that's not even a competition, Rogan! I love Barchie but I didn't even finish watching their show, lol. I've only seen clips of when they're together. Barchie is also like the fulfillment of a childhood ship from the comics.
Rogan do have the advantage in that as many problems as I have with Gilmore Girls, it's a much better show than Riverdale. But as much as I love childhood friends to lovers, there's something about someone coming into your life and changing the way you interact with the world. Logan and Rory do start as friends. They have fun together as friends too. They were pretty clearly interested in each other romantically but I think it's important to remember that Logan felt that Rory's friendship was so important to him he didn't want to alter it because he didn't want it to be like all the other girls he was with before her. Logan gets Rory out of her comfort zone but Rory did the same for Logan.
I think Logan helped a lot with Rory's confidence and her going out to get things she wants when he asked her to jump with him. Before him Lorelai almost always had to talk Rory into doing new things: going to the Chilton dance, signing up for the Chilton speech, opening her door at Yale for the party. Logan asked Rory to jump with him and after that she started making bolder decisions on her own. Granted, they weren't always great decisions and she definitely crashed and burned sometimes, but I think he helped her grow so much as a person. Logan doesn't have as much screen time without Rory but we know he took big risks for her too. He'd never been in a serious relationship before but he wanted to try because he cared that much about her. Of course fails at times but you really know he's trying his best. Also I love that he tries so hard with Lorelai, that says so much about him to me.
Part of what I didn't like about the revival is that they removed that aspect of their relationship. They reduced it to just wacky adventures and illicit affairs. I do like that there was still the sense of friendship and support, but they stagnated the part where they stepped outside of their comfort zone for each other and helped each other grow.

Hi Ashton! I saw in your tags that Barchie is a notp for you and would love to hear why. I shipped Bughead but gave up in the show before Barchie ever got together :)
Oh god. Where to begin? I acknowledge that based on the pilot and the first couple of episodes of season 1, the idea of Betty and Archie together was fine. It wasn't particularly interesting, but at first they seemed to have a solid friendship that could have realistically developed into more if Archie only reciprocated Betty's feelings. Unfortunately, Riverdale basically handled every fucking aspect of their relationship poorly. For one thing, the friendship between Betty and Archie was rarely ever on display unless they were interacting during group scenes or their possible romance was being teased to create drama for the Bughead and Varchie pairings. So in spite of the fact nothing concrete happened between Betty and Archie until the end of season 4, there was nothing to lean on once the writers finally started to head in the BA direction. While the lack of on screen friendship should be blamed on both, Archie in particular showed little interest in Betty's life.
This relationship destroys Betty. The crux of Betty's feelings for Archie, as inconsistent as they are, is that Betty views Archie as this beacon of light that can never be extinguished due to him being pure of heart or some other thing that I disagree with. She romanticizes the idea of how things were before life got so complicated. In her eyes, these childhood memories that we never saw were untainted and good. As a child, Betty always imagined she'd end up with Archie, marrying him at eighteen years old. Teen Betty held on to this dream for a very long time, but was forced to face the truth that Archie didn't feel the same way. If I'm being generous, I'd say Archie considered Betty as a backup plan, but not much more beyond that. But by the end of season 1, Betty realized she wanted so much more for her life than being a power couple with Archie. Betty found real love with Jughead, someone who saw all of her, embracing both the lightness and darkness. Betty discovered a love for investigating mysteries and going down the rabbit hole in the name of justice. Betty likes making murder boards and searching the woods in the middle of the night. Part of the reason for this is that Betty is inherently attracted to darker aspects of life. Betty struggles a lot to accept these sides of herself as her awful, abusive family tells her over and over that she's the problem and the one bringing misery to everyone's lives as she strives to help and improve things for her family. Based on the way she was written during seasons 1-4 prior to the cheating, it came across like Betty was beginning to accept these sides of herself, proud of the person she was with Jughead by her side.
But the moment things with Jughead seemed as though they were uncertain, as flimsy as the issue was (Jughead not doing his homework), Betty turned to Archie to escape from the reality of life. That basically sums up what Archie is to Betty during the adult years as well. When Betty finally confesses to Jughead what happened with Archie, it breaks them. The communication seems to die then and there with both remaining together passively until Betty leaves for college. We later see that Betty and Jughead reconnected to some degree during their freshmen year of college, talking and texting while in relationships with others, essentially engaging in an emotional affair. The timeline from there is confusing because the show could never decide when exactly Jughead left Betty the voicemail, but it seems clear that Betty's life kind of fell apart after that? She ends up having an affair with a married man (who might have turned out to be a serial killer? Seasons 5-7 are kind of a blur for me) and is eventually held captive by the Trash Bag Killer. From there, we see that Betty has trauma over this. She refuses to deal or properly feel her emotions. Jughead is off limits. They still aren't talking and the divide between them has only grown bigger after the voicemail where Betty was led to believe Jughead hated her and thought she was a terrible person, not realizing he'd spiraled into alcoholism and drug use. Archie could never be alone and teenage Betty wanted to fuck Archie once upon a time, so why not? So they enter a friends with benefits relationship that ends up being much more about the benefits and filling a void than it is being actual friends to one another. Betty doesn't want Archie to be this person for her. He makes her feel good and comforted in the moment, but ultimately she's aware the two of them don't work. Not only that, but Archie verbalizes to his army friend that he does NOT want to be there emotionally for Betty. Much like in season 2 after their kiss, Archie went back to Veronica because that's where his heart led him.
Betty continues to emotionally spiral and doesn't seem to improve much over the course of the season. Archie doesn't seem to notice or care. Jughead does. Their interaction is limited, but there's a semblance of a rebuilding phase where the two renew their friendship and go back to investigating together. While Betty's feelings for Jughead are kept ambiguous because again, her emotions are being kept close to her chest and there's a lot she isn't saying or dealing with. Jughead, on the other hand, makes it clear multiple times throughout the season that he hasn't moved past his breakup with Betty and had already forgiven Betty by the time he returned to Riverdale even if he wasn't saying it. Then, completely out of nowhere, Jughead is singing about how he's "perfect" for Tabitha, a song that Bughead fans have frequently said fits Bughead far better. Due to Veronica breaking things off with Archie because she wanted to return to New York, something also totally random that never came to pass, a day drinking Archie decided that he wanted to sleep with his old pal Betty again so they basically get back together at the end of season 5 with zero build up. We don't know why Betty defaults back to Archie. Cheryl did some sort of spell that blatantly had an effect on the plot, though that's never addressed. Then, the characters are in Rivervale, and Betty murders Archie twice and shares a big moment with Jughead where they almost fuck to save the world. Back in regular Riverdale once the universes have been separated, Betty and Archie enter an official relationship. Everything is always about Archie. If there's ever any sort of conflict, Betty will be the one to sacrifice and to change her stance to make things easier for Archie. There's at least one scene where Betty is ranting about something bothering her and Archie is just sitting there like it doesn't matter to him. 99% of their conversations revolved around Archie wanting to fuck or save the town and get rid of Percival Pickens for good. Midway through the season, Betty had another crisis about fearing she was evil, but Archie (basically ripping off something Jughead said at the end of season 2; this also happened to be a flashback the audience had just seen during the episode where Betty and Jughead were going over Betty's past memories together, including multiple iconic Bughead moments) reassured Betty she was a good person, citing a childhood memory the audience had never seen to prove his point. And that's another thing! Rather than showing us much of anything between Betty and Archie in the present to convince us they were meant to be together or were compatible in any way, we just hear about random childhood memories. Everything Betty and Archie ever did revolved around looking back fondly on their so-called idyllic childhoods or having sex. Season 6 Betty came across as such a lesser version of herself. She was still herself, but it was as if she was holding back. It's like, maybe Betty doesn't want to get married? Can't have that! Archie has to settle down in Riverdale and recreate his father's life, meaning Betty needs to get over herself and shove her round self into a square peg so that all of Archie's dreams come true. I mean, multiple times during season 6, Archie was treated as akin to the savior of Riverdale while Betty was legitimately referred to as the "harlot of Babylon". Archie was perfect and indestructible while Betty was dark and dirty and needed to be cleansed before she could be accepted into Heaven. Basically, Archie is perfect as is and doesn't need to adjust himself in the slightest to become a better partner for Betty. But, Betty needs to change nearly everything about herself, reverting back to wanting things that only made sense to kid Betty, all to fulfill some old dream about settling down with Archie that the real Betty hadn't wanted in years. Not to mention the fact that as early as season 1, Betty resented being the perfect girl next door. Well, with Archie, that's basically all she was.
Betty and Archie were never going to work together, but the fact that Betty tried so hard to mold herself into some perfect, cookie cutter housewife, maternal figure all so Archie could have the white picket fence and the 2.5 kids makes me FURIOUS. It was incredibly misogynistic, and honestly led to me despising Archie. Betty deserved so much better. As fucked up and as gross as the "horny Betty" writing for the majority of season 7 was, I'm just relieved that Betty once again reiterated that she and Archie wanted different things and definitively didn't end up together.

15-year-old Hazara activist who narrowly escaped the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, Nila Ibrahimi, addresses the 15th Annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy – see below for her remarks.
Full Remarks
Good morning everyone.
I’m incredibly honored to be here today with you at the Geneva Summit. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my story.
It was August 15, a beautiful sunny day that soon turned dark and cloudy, casting a shadow over the lives of millions of Afghans, especially the girls and women of my homeland. I had woken up early to study for my last mid-year exam at school, scheduled for the next day.
A few hours after breakfast, my mother heard from the neighbours that the Taliban had reached Dasht-e-Barchi, the district where we lived, and may take over Kabul soon. My mother had lived through the civil war and the first Taliban regime and had made me understand how miserable and frightening that tyranny was. And now, her worried eyes and shaky hands made me even more scared.
We ran to destroy our family documents that could put our lives at risk, because it was expected that the Taliban would conduct house to house searches. My father, a former government worker, passed away a month after I was born so the photos, uniforms, and documents were the only memories I had of him. As I watched them burn and turn to ashes, it was as if they had never existed, as if he had never existed. My school certificates as well; I felt so angry and sad to be told to destroy them that I decided to take the risk of keeping them. I knew all of this was only the first spark of a fire that was about to consume our whole lives.
The weight of the situation was overwhelming, and fear took hold of me. My mother is a great person, but she belongs to the generation of women who were subjugated by the Taliban. This created in them a mindset that they had no right to say no, no right to protest or stand up for themselves. They were made to feel like they were incomplete human beings without a man. Now, there were rumours that the Taliban would marry young girls. I felt helpless and scared for what the future held.
I am Nila Ibrahimi, a 16-year-old women’s rights activist. My journey of advocacy started when the Kabul Education Directorate banned schoolgirls over the age of 12 from singing in public. As a member of the Sound of Afghanistan Music Group, I found this decision disappointing and aggravating. We were singing for peace, women’s rights, and humanity on different stages and well-known TV channels. In some parts of the world, there are societies that welcome teenage girls who are using their voices to make changes; however, when I heard about the ban, I realized a sad fact about my society: There were people who wanted to silence me solely because of my gender. I had to stand up for my rights for the first time in my life. So, I recorded a video of me singing a song as a call to action for all girls and women. Murtaza, my brother, posted it on social media, alongside the #IAmMySong, and it soon went viral. The movement successfully reversed the decision.
Later that year, before the fall of Kabul, I was watching President Joe Biden’s briefing on TV regarding his country’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. I vividly recall him sharing a story about his visit there, where he had conversations with several girls. One of them had told him: “If you leave Afghanistan, I will no longer be able to pursue my desire to become a doctor.” She urged him not to abandon Afghanistan. Upon hearing this, tears welled up in my eyes, and my heart splintered, as I could truly empathize with her feelings. She understood the imminent situation and was desperate to hold onto her dreams. Unfortunately, her plea fell on deaf ears. As a 16-year-old, of course I am not aware of all the political complexities, but why couldn’t the US have at least negotiated some form of peace instead of abandoning the country without any resolution?
So now, the dream of that girl, along with the dreams of millions of other girls and women, were shattered overnight when the US and the international community abandoned Afghanistan. The Taliban, a group with a regressive mindset that deems being a girl or woman a crime, took control in a chaotic and shocking manner.
To capture my emotions, allow me to share an excerpt from my diary written the day after Kabul fell, “It doesn’t matter when I wake up anymore, because I cannot close my eyes at night. I see everyone terrified of an uncertain future. At breakfast, no one speaks. After breakfast, I don’t know what I am supposed to do. I can’t study. Why should I study now if I am not allowed a future? Humanity is dead all over the world and I am tired of everything. In our airport, people died from stress, heat stroke, dehydration, from being crushed in their desperation to get out. Taliban are everywhere. Some people say they are going to go to every single house to search for guns or take some girls. I am wearing a long dress and covering my face. Am I going to be forced to cover my face all my life? Am I going to be locked up in my home forever?”
Five days after the fall, my family decided to flee to Pakistan. We were lucky. After eight tense months, the 30 Birds Foundation helped us resettle in Canada. While I feel safer in my new home, every single day, I think of those girls left behind in Afghanistan; left with no hope. In Canada, I make decisions about my life, and embrace the person I aspire to be. But, what about them?
As I stand here today, I want the world to know that girls have been out of school for 640 days. Universities are also closed off to them. Women have been stripped of everything, their education, their freedom of movement, their right to work, their choice of what to wear, and their ability to participate in public life. This is a grave injustice that denies them their basic human rights, rights that should be afforded to every individual on this planet.
I am in awe of the immense bravery displayed by Afghan girls and women, who have steadfastly fought for their dreams in the face of the Taliban’s oppression. In the darkest of times, hope becomes our lifeline. It is our collective responsibility to be their hope, to stand with them, and to take action.
So, I ask you, all of you, be part of this movement. And I ask those of you who have the power and the influence to please lend your voice and actions to support the Afghan girls and women. Let us unite and prove that humanity’s strength lies in its compassion and unwavering commitment to justice. The time for action is now.
Thank you.
Soomaya Javadi, another young Hazara activist who fled Afghanistan following the fall of Kabul with Nila Ibrahimi, addressed the U.N. Opening of the 15th Annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy, on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

Okay I wanna say sth so in the new episode …SPOILER:
So Betty actually wins the pageant according to the judges but Alice reads and crowns Ethel winner instead because she thinks the opportunities will help someone like Ethel. So I was thinking about the potential endgame ships in relation, now a lot of people aren’t understanding Beronica but I think in RAS’ mindset giving endgames for example to ships like Beronica and jarchie or Reggie and Archie would help queer representation in different ways than Choni and Kevin etc. As they’re the core 4 of the main characters - usually they would not be queer in any other show leading from friendship to romance. Usually in shows ships like these would never be endgame. Or even have a chance. But Beronica happening has changed this. I made a joking post before about how in most shows barchie would be endgame but in riverdale anything is possible. But I think there’s more meta to this after this pageant episode. Idk just musing..
Thinking this is inspired how Archie comics wouldn’t let him make Archie gay in his musical and how that influence the comics plot about censorship and then talking about the enemy is us not the red scare/communism etc the enemy is within wholesome, conforming America critique. Yes this is the milkman but it’s what riverdale is. It’s poking about this All American Archie mindset. It always has been. They’re pulling the curtain and telling you what riverdale is this season and that’s how it ties to the rest of the series. This then means they used the main ships to critique their tropes and what they mean. This concept of Alice giving Ethel the pageant win made me think how RAS might view th queer ships like jarchie or rarchie and Beronica. How normally they wouldn’t have a chance but then giving them a chance to be endgame is not something queer community is used to. For me it’s something different than the representation found in choni and the ships with Kevin. Which choni is amazing! Watch for them because they’re one of the best ships out there btw!! But Beronica and jarchie - these characters are the main icons of Archie comics and to end that classic love triangle in the queer way would be unique.

I just want to say that the writers just proved that Jeronica could of been a thing at the beginning!!! It could of just been there so freaking naturally and they just made us to believe that it couldn't!!
We could of have detective Jeronica looking into Jason Blossoms murder while Barchie did there thing???
I want that.
I mean they could of just been like together this whole time?
I mean jewelry business owner Veronica and Author Jughead living domestically. Jug making breakfast while Veronica goes over the designs of there new appartment. We could of had movie nights and cute nerdy banter.
Jug could of had someone fighting for him from the beginning and Ronnie could of had someone who want to just be with her.
I want to cry I really do.

I just saw the synopsis for 7x10 jabitha investigating a mystery and barchie and veggie double date :(( i'm losing hope
Well we knew they would dip into old couples again? Possibly even with a weird Tabitha² love triangle with Jughead. Like Choni is the only sure thing right now. Also Tabitha is a great character and a much better protagonist than Jughead, so I'm excited for her to move the story along. Maybe we can pick up the pace on this murder plot finally and rescue Ethel too. And, I will just leave you with this:
When we kind of reset to the 1950s and we made that decision to go back to the OG comics, it was like that sort of informed what our storytelling would be and our storytelling really would be much more about dating, relationships, going steady, holding hands, and things like that, as opposed to the crazy Riverdale “oh my god, we’re in the shower” and all of that crazy stuff. It was a more innocent relationship type but we did kind of want to go back and think, before anyone is hot and heavy and ride or die — I don’t think anyone’s mentioned the word endgame yet in the 1950s because mercifully, it didn’t exist. One of the fun things about the 1950s is being able to see various pairings and various characters go on a date and casually date and not so casually date, and I can safely say that if you’ve only seen episode three, there is a lot more story between Archie and Betty and Veronica, specifically those three, and other characters that haven’t historically been matched with Veronica or Betty. So, there’s a lot more teen high jinks and romance to play before we lock into any endgames. [...] Lastly, you finally gave me what I’ve been asking you about forever: Jughead and Veronica having scenes together! I was living for them in episode three. What was the push for that? Was it because fans kept mentioning that they wanted to see them or were they just thrown together naturally since they didn’t get much time before? I think it’s a little bit of both. I mean, when we kind of did this soft reset, we sort of were like, “Okay, who haven’t we seen together?” We always love our typical sort of references and we started thinking of like, oh — and we love saying this in the Riverdale writers’ room and on the show, things like, “Oh my gosh, Jughead and Veronica are like the Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe of Riverdale High, the tortured writer and then the beautiful starlet.” And in the past, the little Veronica and Jughead content that we’ve had has always played great. We’ve just never gotten a chance to dig into that. So I can tell you that we are leaning into that and that that bubbles up in various times throughout the season, in a really fun way. It’s a fun pairing, those characters definitely have a spark.
(x)
and I will say that if things don't turn out the way you hope, there's a lot of talented people in this fandom that will create better endings for them. 💜

The fact that BH has been the only ship left out of the trailer show how low they care about this dead ship 😂 And how Lili made clear that she doesn’t want to film with Cole anymore. Bugdead will stay dead. Thanks queen Lili for this
Sweetie. Baby. Love of my life. I think there is a pretty gaping chasm between how you think these messages are being received and how they are actually being received.
I think you believe there is an open wound that you are rubbing salt in, or that you are sticking it to us in some way and I am just stewing in anger and jealousy over here, and this is your form of gloating. I think that’s what you perceive.
Reality looks a bit different, baby. There is no open wound, the strongest emotion I felt at the trailer is a bit of a “meh”, and the strongest emotion is pity. My pity for you is threefold, anon. This is how you spend your days. Trying to rile up BH blogs on anon (because you never once sent me a message off anon, so you can’t do it without a mask in front of you). Intentionally trying to hurt people, with…somewhat limited amounts of success. Maybe it’s the teacher in me, but “hurt people hurt people” pops into mind here. Secondly, the quote….generous overinterpretation of content in front of you. So much to the point that you are now just filling in words people didn’t say. Hmm. Not getting what you want? And third, the very much trying to cover up for the fact that you hate the BA content you’re getting too, anon. It’s been a pretty clear theme that you all hate the content you’re getting but you’re never going to get to check off every requirement in that arbitrary Barchie checklist standing between you and satisfaction sweetie. Our expectations are managed. Your fandom has been wrong every time and continues to let yourself get clowned.
Anyway, to sum up, I hope you find some self reflection, dear anon. Thanks for spending my morning commute with me.

So you know that I need to ask you about Riverdale ships---did you/do you ship Barchie, Bughead, Varchie, Jeronica, Beronica, all or none of the above...?! :)
So I didn't watch enough of the show to get really invested so everything I ship is based off of a) reading the comics as a kid and b) the dynamics that intrigued me in the 7 or so episodes that I watched.
Which is basically Barchie and Cheryl/Betty. I didn't really mind most of the other ships - I will say I was almost comatose levels of bored anytime Veronica and Archie were interacting - but I can't say I was super invested, either, sorry! Maybe things would've changed if I kept watching but as I always say, I was only watching because I thought Cheryl had murdered her brother and I Wanted to See That, but alas, I lost interest once I realized it was probably one of her parents (I never actually looked that up, but I was leaning more towards her dad).

Looking through my old screenshots I came across this old 2018 tweet of a Barchie fan
Tumblr media
Bare in mind, this is 2018. Around season 2, more or less.
Not to mention the COUNTLESS asks in the ask boxes of my fellow Bughead blogs here on Tumblr, such as @edgarsabandonedrocketship @stillhidden @i-know-you-can @middleagedresidentofriverdale @bugheadsfangirl and many others that promised us that "ratings and viewers will skyrocket with Barchie".
Mh.
So.
Let's look at the numbers, shall we?
These are the ratings and viewers during the Bughead/Varchie era:
Season 1
Tumblr media
Remember that the season was the first one, so nobody knew what the show was or what was the mood or anything. Keeping this in mind, it still did pretty good.
Season 2
Tumblr media
This season was objectively the best one, stable at 1 million viewers average, with minor downsides.
Season 3
Tumblr media
Objectively this season is the most irregular one, but still did pretty good considering the madness of it, keeping the show between 1 million and 800k viewers (with minor downsides, again).
Season 4
Tumblr media
Here too we can see that the decline was relatively normal, if not for two episodes: 4x12 which was a Katy Keen crossover episode (which, spoiler, nobody gave two shits) and the infamous 4x17 which lost 110k viewers in one week (plus the trama was leaked so everybody knew and didn't bother to watch). But everybody definitely hated the Barchie kiss (go check the reviews if you don't believe me. Plus it was another stupid musical so... draw your conclusions)
Season 5
Tumblr media
Now... I guess there's no need to describe what you're seeing here right? The show declined again, yes. But in the span of one season it lost 45% of it's viewers. Just look from season 4 première to season 5 première. And remember that 5x04 can be considered another "première", because it was first episode after the time jump, but again the show started hemorraging viewers. With barely more than 300k viewers watching the infamous finale.
Season 6
Tumblr media
And now. The famous season 6. The supernatural season. We're again seeing another huge decline. Another 45% decline in viewers. The second in the span of 2 years. That should tell you something. Not to mention that, this time, for the first time, the season finale is the less viewed episode. I wonder if the (already) trifling audience got spoilers beforehand. Mmmm 🤔
So... To summarize. Since Barchie happened, the views and the viewers dropped by 45% two times in two years and now the show that made roughly 1/2 million viewers now can't barely go over 200k anymore.
Thus I wonder... where's the horde of Barchie fans that was promised and who would have saved Riverdale? Where's the "increased ratings" that Barchie fans anticipated back in 2018. I can't see them. Quite the opposite, in fact.
The ship that was thought would have saved Riverdale actually sinked the show.
As my old friend Jughead would say
