I really appreciate how often Flight Rising inspires me to do stuff. Like, I'm not joking when I say that part of the reason I'm currently taking a bachelor degree in Digital Culture is due to the site and its community. As a part of my degree I'm learning web design, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I'm trying to specialize in accessibility and responsive web design, (when a website re-sizes for different screens, and the layout changes for ease of use on mobile) as a result of reading a bunch of people's feedback on what works and what doesn't with how Flight Rising currently is built. I honestly want to get good enough to be able to help improve the site, and make it a better and more accessible place for as many as possible.

Will I actually be able to get there? Who knows! But I won't find out until I try, so I'm just gonna aim high and see where I end up. So I think I'm gonna try to use this blog a bit more for sharing some of the stuff I create during the rest of my degree. I'm nearly halfway through the degree, with exams next month. So I hope to post some of my works, (it's a portfolio exam, so I'm currently working on 4 different websites with different core focuses) when I've gotten my exam results. (Othervise it might get marked as plagiarism, which would be horrible.)

So, this is a huge THANK YOU to the Flight Rising community! I would never have thought that reading drama blogs like the morning newspaper, and making spreadsheets for commissions and stuff like NotN actually would have an important role in my life, but here I am C:

This is a Spider-Gwen jumpsuit I made!

Happy Halloween! I made this bodysuit and I'm super happy with it!

I'm gonna break down step by step what i did but I'm NOT a professional cosplayer or seamstress or fashion designer or anything. This is just to document what I've done in case it could help somebody else!

Materials used:

Scuba hex white (2 yards, available at Joann or Cosplay Fabrics International)

Scuba hex black (2 yards, same as previous links)

Web pattern on Spoonflower (make sure to order it printed on spandex!)

Three zippers (one for the bodysuit, two for the arms)

7mm snap buttons for the collar

Wig from @ardawigscanada so I don't actually have to style it as I am lazy and bad at wig styling

Step One: PATTERNING

I used several patterns as a base:

Yaya Han's Ultimate Bodysuit Pattern for the general design (McCall's M7217)

The Yaya Han pattern with a baseball jersey shirt for the arm sleeves (McCall's M7554)

McCall's M7486 for the hood (or you can trace a hood from a sweater of your choice)

Step Two: DRAFTING

First I tested out the bodysuit pattern solely on its own on some cheap stretchy fabric just to make sure it fits. I find that their smallest size fits me well as I am definitely a very stringy person. But the bodysuit was a bit short so i needed to extend the torso parts.

Then I trace out new patterns and draw the Spider-Gwen design on top of them, and cut.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!

I wasn't sure if that would fit me either so I made ANOTHER mockup of the pattern I drafted out of scrap fabric (basically the web pattern I ordered but in the wrong size because I am dumb and I don't check things). Turns out this was a GOOD IDEA because this came out too loose! The fabrics I got were veeeery expensive so I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Step Three: COMMENCE SEWING! (AND HAIR PULLING)

After making the adjustments to my paper patterns, I held my breath and started on the bodysuit proper. Hoping that I don't fuck everything up.

I started with the easy stuff, which were the front panels:

So far so good! I didn't use any special types of stitches, just regular straight stitch. I read that other cosplayers may use zigzag stitches for stretchy fabric but I have very little sewing experience and I do NOT trust my sewing machine at all. Just do what you're comfortable with and you'll be fine!

And important note! Make sure you stretch your fabric slightly while sewing! It's supposed to be a stretchy suit after all!

Back panels were a pain, but I got it done... there was a lot of thread pulling and hair pulling and questioning my life choices involved.

then I sewed the sides together! The white and black parts don't align perfectly but you can't really tell in this picture 😅

After that, I sewed the web parts onto the sleeves and the sleeves to the shoulders. That part went surprisingly smoothly so I'm just going to move on. Sorry for the lack of images but there's a photo limit on this website.

Step 3.1 Gloves!!!

Okay so I got a separate pattern for the gloves and also left them to basically the last minute to finish as they're so goddamn difficult!

This tutorial helped me out so much!!!

As you can see in these pictures, my first attempt came out a bit too loose. But it was an easy fix. I just had to take in the thumb and the pinky and it fit reasonably well on my hand.

And I also installed zippers on the seams of my sleeves so I can easily remove my gloves while still keeping them attached to the jumpsuit. This is why this project needed three zippers.

Step 3.2 Collar

And finally, the collar. This almost made me gave up on the entire project.

Right after I sewed the hood on, I was well on my way to finishing, or so I thought!

Because I was combining two different patterns with two different types of collars, I needed to figure out how to make them fit together. there were many MANY failed attempts.

Eventually what I did was I cut out two curved trapezoid shaped things out of the white scuba fabric, sewed that to the top of where the hood connects to the bodysuit, and then sewed the collar on top of that. This made sure that the fabric actually conforms to my neck area.

I placed down a t-shirt to trace the curvy trapezoids, and also make sure you measure your neck area appropriately!

CLOSING THOUGHTS

So yeah that's basically what I did. I admit I was too lazy to dye my flats in order to make her ballet flats but I'm sure that's easy compared to this mess! Anyway my Converses worked in a pinch.

My past few finished projects have been quite useful daily wear, so I felt the need for something quite fanciful. I decided to try and redo an old project, now my tailoring skills have gotten much better. I want to remake this waistcoat:

I absolutely loved it when I made it 3? years ago, and while I'm still happy with how it looks, I think I can improve on it a lot with my current tailoring knowledge. There's some wrinkles, it's not quite long enough and I can only wear it over a binder, which greatly inhibits my opportunities to wear it. And I recently found some more of the embroidered fabric, so I can have a whole second one to wear without a binder.

So far I've made 4 mockups to get to a pattern I like. I started with the Mariah Pattie method of a circular pattern that covers the torso in a smooth manner and then put my regular darted waistcoat pattern over it. That fit okay, but needed more breathing room, which I added to the sides. Then I rotated the shoulder piece to get rid of the gaping at the armhole. I had to do that twice, but now it falls smoothly over my chest, no darts or princess seams necessary. I'm gonna add a laced back after some examples from my waistcoats of the hopkins collection book, which will take care of making the sides more flattering. I'm very excited to be starting this new project properly next week!

my night has been pretty uneventful, which i don't mind since my family has never done anything for new years (aside from visiting family sometimes but all those plans got scrapped cause of omicron :|). after dinner i tried to draw, and then i tried to watch a movie but i got distracted pretty easily and ended up watching youtube - i think i'll save my plans for tomorrow. i dont remember mentioning my timezone but i think it's the same cause i think you're usually active when i'm awake,, if that makes sense? (it's est btw haha) also what are you giffing 👀👀

i guess to get you up to speed i finished finals about a week and a half ago and since then i've done close to nothing aside from painting a relative's dog for their christmas present bc they asked for it. i think it turned out okay but now i've learned that i'm probably never gonna paint or draw for someone if they asked in the future :| for some big-ish pieces i'll try to have a plan and even do a digital mockup to block in colours but i went into this piece kind of w no plan,,, also it was my first time drawing a dog. i ended up putting it off for a few days until i completed the whole thing in a day. my mom sent them a picture (+ we even put it in a frame) and they seemed to like it so im satisfied :))

Sewing a Babydoll Dress Attempt 1

Part 1

Okay I don't think it's exactly a babydoll dress but more something like this puffy-sleeved selkie dress that was all over everywhere sometime ago.

My Plan:

A tube bodice with darts to fit (as compared to the princess seams in the selkie dress, because it's simply just easier for me to measure out the exact dart positioning and dimensions and then put the bodice on and fix them.)

A rectangle skirt, but I'm just making a mockup out of a linen bedsheet for now, so just one layer is fine for now.

I remembered this later, but the bodice needs to have a lining

The fabric I'm using is an old bedsheet lol but but but it's print is actually very fun and colourful and childlike so I think it actually goes pretty well with this babydoll-ish silhouette.

Quick disclaimer: My country does use SI units but its kinda not that hard and fast so I use inches more because that's what my parents use more often and also because I'm a wannabe American. Most people here can convert between inches and cms pretty easily so it's easy to talk in whatever units I want even tho I can't convert them. What I'm trying to say is let's slander Americans in the notes.

Cutting:

Top: I measured out a rectangle that would go around by chest plus a bit extra for attaching some kind of closure at the back, with the breadth that I wanted. Then I marked the tips/centre lines of darts where I measured my nips would end up and divided the amount that my underbust is less than my bust evenly among the two.

Skirt: I actually has no idea as to how long (parallel to my waist, not the length of the skirt) the rectangle needs to be for a good frill, so I started out by cutting out my underbust circumference plus 20 inches or so. This turned out to be about 50 inches. I did a very loose basting stitch along the top and pulled on it to see if the length is enough for the floof that I'm going for and it wasn't, so I cut out an additional piece of 30 inches, making the total 80 inches. That's 2 metres, like wow thats A lot and this is just a mockup. I'm gonna have to spend so much money on buying 5-6 metres of tulle if/when I make the actual dress.

Something that I should've paid attention to is that if I did piece the fabric for the skirt, I could've easily hidden the joint under a gather. But oh well, I'm just gonna press it and hope for the best now.

Sleeves: I have never ever made sleeves before and I don't like using patterns (neither am I good at using them) so I was kinda scared, but I finally figured out the basic shape that I need and made a couple... mockup mockups? The first one turned out pretty decent too, and after that I just had to trim the shoulders, decrease the length and increase the width. The second one turned out pretty good by my standards, so I'm gonna be using the pattern I made for that.
