hl really is so boring. like it was fun in the moment when reading the novel for the first time but then there’s a post-novel clarity where its like huh the relationship is actually so shallow. idk how ppl can compare hl and wx and think hl is better (even tho novel wx has major issues too). but comparing it to cql wx? its not even a competition, cql wx wins by far 💀

for REAL. hualian's big strength is that they have fabulous chemistry. every scene with them together is genuinely really fun and silly and I can tell very easily how much they care about each other, which is why despite my griping I actually do enjoy a lot of the romance scenes in the book. but if you're looking for something deeper, or even something real....it's just not there. it's all fantasy and idealization and hyper-devotion to the point where you have literally nothing else in your life that you care about or think makes life worth living. hc giving xl his ashes and saying essentially 'if you die, there's no point to me living' is actually really sad. xl inspired a traumatized child to live and then instead of actually living his life that child just devoted himself to xl utterly...it's just a self-fulfilling loop. hc never found anything else that he cared about or loved or was passionate about to really live for. he died for xl MULTIPLE times and he never appreciated his existence beyond xl's presence, which is honestly one of the most depressing endings a traumatized child can have

also you're so right when you say it's shallow. hc like 'gege is absolutely perfect and beyond reproach' and xl is like 'hc is so funny and we get along so well' and sure you have the dramatic "I saved your life/I'll kill for you' backstory but that didn't make it more interesting, it's just made it more dramatic. their principles, their morals, their life experiences, their perspectives and goals and respective places in life - it's not that those things are incompatible in the relationship, they're just irrelevant to the relationship. so like...what does any of this matter besides 'well they're happy now!' I personally like when characters care about each other for actual reasons that tie into the themes of the stoy

and yeah, despite its issues novel wx was extremely compelling and their dynamic for the most part made sense bc they complemented each other rly well and there were such good romantic scenes in the book i shan't lie. and like if two characters have never actually had to deal with genuine issues in their relationship because they just accept the other as perfect the way they are, its a very fragile and unstable dynamic because they have no idea how to resolve conflict or come to terms with being angry at each other. yet another reason wangxian is so much more stable and rewarding than hualian. they know what it's like to truly be opposed to each other, disagree with each other, hurt each other, and they found a resolution to that. not that they're perfect but in comparison, they've put in the work

and comparing hl to cql wx is really funny to me actually. real hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby situation in terms of like...themes...knowing each other...growing as people together...living meaningful lives...yeah idk how mdzs/cql fans moved on the tgcf and got into the romance because it's so much more simplistic and, imo, unappealing

I'm actually quite surprised that Cheritz made a response to the recent unrest in the fandom, but I guess I forgot just how much attention Cheritz pays to its fans. I mean, we would never have had Ray and V routes if not for that, right?

Making a game with over 200 days worth of content is just plain unrealistic. Especially with such a small company that's been bit so hard by the economy of the pandemic

Of course they're going to use real images, stock images, ai. Of course the subscription cost is going to be so high. They need to be able to pay for the workers that they already/still have, rather than paying background artists

I'm not saying it's right or justified. I'm just saying... Cmon. Why didn't I expect this?

This is just what happens when you decide to make a game with so much quantity and not enough staff. I've said it again, I'll say it a thousand times: Cheritz needs to return to making shorter, higher quality games. Maybe the subscriptions to Ssum do quite well, maybe, but imo I rly don't think whatever the payoff is is rly worth it, compared to just how much work the staff have to put in

as someone who is also trying to overhaul their entire wardrobe after throwing out fast fashion pieces,, do you have any specific brands you like, advice on places to get clothes for long-term wear, etc? ty!!

thank you for asking! this is a long post but it's been my life for a bit now so i would suggest reading through it to skip the learning stages that i went through the hard way! there is some important and useful info here :) brand recs at the end

i would suggest looking for vintage or secondhand clothes first and foremost bc that's how you can find quality pieces for a reasonable price :)

if you want pure longevity, synthetics like polyester, nylon, elastane, etc will last not only your lifetime but your grandchildrens' too. they can be quite comfortable sometimes BUT:

they will likely break down in hundreds of years

they are NOT biodegradable and so will break down into microplastics and toxic microfibers

for me and a lot of others, you will notice the difference in quality in synthetics vs fabrics like cotton and virgin wool. i refuse to buy synthetics for the above reasons but also bc they just Feel Worse idk how to explain iykyk (tip especially valuable for autistic ppl)

brands: all depend on style so look for the styles you like/want to dress in on pinterest, then track down the original designer of the dress! from there you can search irl places or plug the designers into apps like:

vinted: cheaper vintage or second hand clothes from all sorts of brands

vestiare collective: more high-end, pieces are authenticated and usually in great condition

GEM: a gem of a site truly, accumulates all the finds from your search from different websites like ebay, etc

depop: honestly not the biggest fan but can be good sometimes! make sure to buy vintage/secondhand and ask sellers for the brand to not get sold an aliexpress dupe for 100 bucks

vintage shops: especially good for accessories like belts and ties. vintage shops usually have much better stuff than charity shops

kilo sales: THE BEST PLACES IRL in my opinion i got a 2k+ virgin wool coat for £20 . honestly in my experience kilo sales are great. check out Worth the Weight if you're in the UK!

remember that brand history matters! for example vivienne westwood has a great reputation as luxury punk but the pieces produced in recent years are actually very low in quality, defintely not worth the money for a lot of people! pay for quality, not just the name :) same goes for jean paul gaultier's recent pieces imo.

additional VERY USEFUL tips:

the standard zipper used by most of the companies making your garments is YKK. if you look at any zipper you're wearing rn and inspect it closely chances are you'll see YKK engraved on it. before buying a piece check that it has opti or riri zippers - this is some indication of a higher quality

one of the first things to do before buying a piece is to immediately check the materials it's made of!! the tag detailing materials is usually towards the bottom of the garment . i immediately dismiss things that have higher than 5% synthetics but i'm just rly picky w materials

EACH MATERIAL HAS DIFFERENT USES !!! BUT GENERALLY: virign wool is the best kind of wool, full-grain leather is better than most other kinds of leather, mulberry silk is better than other kinds of silk

brand recs:

yohji yamamoto, yehufan (i own a skirt by him!!), marina eerrie, ann demeulemeester, jw anderson, solovair for shoes (much better than docs), maison (martin) margiela (esp artisanal line 0), miu miu (i wear their beret i thrifted for £15 almost every day), valentino esp pre 2021 , lemaine , undercover older pieces , early raf simons , ...honestly there's a lot, if you need more send another ask or DM :)

p.s. if u can go runway shows etc go to the sample sales afterwards sometimes the pieces there are gorgeous !! but sometimes v pricey :')

The interplay between trauma and theory crafting is rly weird and imo worth talking about more.

A basic way trauma plays out is projecting aspects of a past traumatic situation onto a present situation that bears some (perhaps only superficial) similarities. You jump to conclusions that things now are the way as they were then, or treat ppl now like they're ppl from your past, or have emotions that are proportional to the past traumatic situation in response to the present stimulus.

If you're projecting past situations and roles onto present situations it's extremely easy to see patterns. Once you've ideologized these patterns it's even easier to see future situations as them happening again.

.

And especially in more social justice type spaces the idea that oppressed ppl have an automatic, inherent expertise in their oppression works to take the rush of trauma-fueled clarity and cement it into collective ideology.

And, like, it's not like we can/should/need to separate out what comes from trauma vs what's detached and rational. (Detached rationalism/objectivity are fake ofc).

Thinking about how theory around transmisogyny forms, but also about how older writings talk about feminist and anti racist consciousness raising work, letting ourselves see patterns and talk about them and affirm them and risking getting positioned as crazy /being crazy is rly important. (The combahee river collective statement gets at some of these dynamics re feeling crazy without communal validation).

I think there's a lot of really important theorizing work that's come from ppl being deep, deep in their trauma and in their own head and having extremely low thresholds for pattern recognition.

But it's also easy to end up too deep. To cling so tight to a specific theoretical framework that you lose the ability to appreciate the specificity of a given situation. To reduce individuals to demographics. To let one framework or one axis of oppression become the way you try and make sense of the entirety of the world. (Ask me how I know).

The Icarus comparison is inescapable.

Lately I've been trying to stay grounded in the idea that theory isn't truth (cuz there is no truth at that level). It's just a lens or a tool. And a lens that brings one point into focus obscures and distorts all else.

But you can think with a framework and see what it tells you, and you compare it to what you'd get with a different framework, or what your gut says, to common sense, to your emotions, to various friends, and you make your decisions. Theory informs and you get to amend your frameworks over time and see where they take you.

I have a ton of appreciation for the ppl who are deep in this shit. It's a real place to be, and it's where the bulk of theory is born imo. The times I've been there have been rly important to getting where I am rn.

My big thought here is just that it's a disservice to ppl in that position to hyper validate them, and it's been rly helpful for me to get to a point where I recognize and can think intentionally about these dynamics.

yesssss I rly love choir girl from the little angel set but if u don’t like lychee or freesia which are the top notes but imo the pear and peony notes come thru as well… gorgeous decadent scent.

The other one (Maria’s anthem) from that set is also sooo dainty and pretty. I got a sample of that one. If u like woody/floral scents and less fruity, that one is pretty good.

I will say I’ve been meaning to try the ribbon ballet scent from the swan ballet set, since I rly like orchard fruit top notes (apricot is my fav but I also like mango and orange). re blade runner i don't want to argue with your brother, but i do would like to say that imo forcing someone to first watch an unenjoyable version of a two hour movie and then the version the people behind the movie actually stand by is weird lol. my mom saw it with me her first time and she was perfectly capable of getting it even though she almost exclusively likes action movies with minimal plot. it's just a cool cyberpunk neo noir and honestly not that complicated. just so you get a clearer picture of the differences the theatrical cut added a lot of unnecessary narration, cut some important scenes/violence and changed the ending all in an attempt to make the movie more palatable, but that just ended up skewing the movie's message

sorry if this was a lot lol i just think a person's taste and capacity for understanding art shouldn't be right/wrong, you get it or you don't type of thing and if you get confused about a new movie you're watching the person next to you should be willing to answer a question instead of making you jump through hoops. all that's to say i hope you enjoy it, also cool if you don't <3

i think the fact there's still any debate at all proves both versions are worth watching! i even googled it just now and the reactions seem split, although it seems the director's favorite edition is the final cut so that's good to know. i didn't realize this was controversial so i'm putting his opinion on blast here, but my brother actually likes the theatrical cut better...... he likes the bad narration in a post-ironic way lmaoo and it's the one we have on dvd because it's my dad's favorite too (unironically so). my mom has only ever seen the theatrical cut and she still didn't get the movie & thought it was boring lol i'm sorry i'm learning my family is full of blade runner degenerates 😌

i think shouto's leo moon is really spot-on. leos tend to have a lot of duality – much more than people often give them credit for. he's definitely got this fire in his emotions that drives him to achieve the way he does. but i also think this placement shows his natural inclinations. he fights against himself and his similarities to his father, but.... they're there. he's bold, brave, and magnetic. i think he naturally tends toward being dramatic, but he consciously tones it down. you can see it in the way he fights! specifically, when he ROCKS SERO'S SHIT at the sports festival. insanely dramatic and a perfect example of "outbursts of enthusiasm." he def has control issues, but not necessarily in a negative way. he just prefers to lead and prefers to control things as much as possible. he's very headstrong – and i think this manifests in the fact that he's always holding back. he won't even let himself go. as i said above, he's definitely ambitious. but i think this shows the ambition he has naturally – the ambition that's similar to enji's. i've already touched on how he's showy, but not in an overbearing way! this is also perfectly represented by his fight with sero. shouto also has difficulty with his self-worth – he's used to placing all his worth in his achievements. that's what enji taught him, after all. but his pride doesn't come from having high self-esteem. it comes from all the things he's been able to do.

❥ virgo rising: organized. put-together. reliable. perfectionistic. curious. meticulous. thoughtful. prone to insecurity. resistant to change. careful. quiet.

HERE IT IS, my favorite one of his placements!! before i looked into his chart at all, i was like "if he doesn't have any virgo in here, i'm gonna give up on astrology." and in fact, it is his rISING?? the rising sign is often what people guess your sun sign is. it's what you project. and he projects........ literally all of these traits. i'm not even going to break this one down because i don't think i need to lmao and he has other placements

❥ 0º aquarius mercury: open-minded. thoughtful. creative. unique. complex. easily misunderstood. detached. logical. objective. eccentric.

like tokoyami, shouto has a placement at a critical degree. this (in my opinion!!!!) gives him a blend of aquarius and capricorn mercury energy. but it also means that it's either a place where he excels or that he struggles. and i'd say he definitely struggles with communication and general mercurial energy. this is a great example of how a critical degree can go one of two very different ways! in tokoyami's chart, his 0º capricorn jupiter manifested easily in his chart. i'd say that shouto's mercury doesn't manifest nearly as easily. aquarius mercuries tend to have more internal energy than external – or that's the way i think about it, at least. mercury is the planet of communication, but it's also the planet of memory, intellect, and transportation. that's why mercury retrograde is associated with miscommunications and travel issues. i think shouto's mercurial energy manifests in his drive to learn and his curiosity – his all-around work ethic. this is also probably where that capricorn energy comes in. capricorn mercuries sometimes sound like they're talking down to you, but it's just because they're very matter-of-fact... which rings true here. aquarius mercury's keywords all line up pretty well with him, in my opinion – especially being easily misunderstood and detached. the only one i don't necessarily see in him is open-mindedness, but that also could come with his character development. another thing to recognize is that right now, these characters (the students) are all like, what, 16? so they're still working through their issues and struggles. i think communication (and this particular placement) will be something shouto needs to work through. this is probably a really difficult placement for him, in all honesty. he has big emotions (leo moon) and trouble communicating them.

❥ sagittarius venus: independent. freedom-loving. adventurous. fun-loving. not a big fan of commitment. open-minded. honest. probably a fan of hookups and fwb-type relationships. impatient.

shouto's sagittarius venus fits him pretty well, but it's unexpected. i wouldn't say he's got the most ~sagittarius-y~ energy. sags are usually much more easygoing than him, but this is specifically in his venus placement, which gives it a little more wiggle room to express itself. venus doesn't just represent love – it represents your aesthetic taste and even your values regarding finance and material possessions. shouto seems to be really freespirited regarding money – he is rich. he's got no worries as far as material possessions. as far as aesthetic and personal appearance, sagittarius venus people usually look very distinct in some way. the hair? a little distinct, i would say. i think this placement actually fits because of what i said above with his aquarius mercury and leo moon – he has big feelings and trouble communicating them. if it comes to a romantic relationship, i have a feeling he just....... won't be in one. he'd rather be unattached. and that could come from commitment issues or even his inability to communicate his emotions.

❥ pisces mars: compassionate. sensitive. imaginative. shy at first. passive aggressive. emotional.

while i wouldn't necessarily say that shouto's compassionate, i think that's one of those traits that kind of just comes along with being a pro hero. even though he doesn't always show it on the outside, he's definitely sensitive – even if he wasn't traumatized by fkn enji, i think he'd still be sensitive and emotional. i wouldn't say he's super imaginative, but i do think he thinks creatively for sure. he has to think differently than his peers because of his quirk – both fire and ice are really dangerous. yeah, he can use his ice to immobilize people, but he also knows that he can't keep them frozen for too long if he doesn't want them to get hurt. he just has a much different combat style (which mars would definitely play a part in) than his peers. i think the detachedness his other placements give him just amplifies the idea that he's shy. whether or not he is shy at first, it certainly reads that way. he also tends to be passive aggressive. it's not super often that he confronts someone head-on about a problem. this could partially be because he isn't great at reading social cues, so he doesn't really know when there's a conflict. his wiki describes him as "calm and composed, but brutal in combat" and i would say this mars placement seems aligned with that.

❥ sagittarius jupiter: this is considered one of the luckiest placements to have. optimistic. inspirational. can indicate a spiritual person. usually a scholar. jupiter is in its domicile here.

shouto is surprisingly idealistic, which (imo) leads to being optimistic. the reason he resents people is usually because he doesn't like their outlook or disposition or the way they treat others – he feels they should be more "heroic" or "idealistic." i think this trait was kind of knocked out of him in childhood. he's really a tough one to analyze because it's hard to separate his nurture from nature and imagine what could have been if certain things hadn't happened to him. his natural ability inspires his peers to do their best. he also takes his studies very seriously.

❥ virgo saturn: introspection and change as a result of that introspection. adaptability.

this is probably the second-most shouto placement for me!! he is the definition of introspection. introspection is what really made him resent his father so much. and that same introspection is what made him start using his left side. shouto has really changed a lot throughout this series. and his transformation was really saturnian in nature, to be honest. saturn represents wisdom, discipline, and karma, and he's done a lot of self-reflection in those areas in particular, which led to change and really shows his adaptability.

❥ aries chiron: competitive. determined. intense. can be difficult to control without guidance. tough. self-focus. wound: worthlessness.

he shares this placement with bakugou. even though this placement is the same, it manifests in two different ways. shouto's worthlessness wound was obviously inflicted by his parents. and as a result, he became all of those things above in order to combat that feeling. he overcompensates to prove that he's not worthless. and his worthlessness wound is less about being worthless entirely and more about him specifically being worthless. he wants to show that he has worth as an individual – not as the son of endeavor.

❥ libra north node: too individualistic. relying too much on the self and alienating others because of it. emphasis on justice and fairness.

he shares this placement with bakugou, but shouto's trajectory for growth is way easier to pinpoint. shouto's whole issue is that he wants to be someone completely different from his father – he doesn't want to follow in enji's footsteps or be stuck in his shadow. as a result, he really does end up alienating a lot of people – especially at the beginning of his time at ua. the north node is a placement that indicates where we could see significant personal growth, and we've already seen the beginning of this transformation with shouto.

❥ overall

i touched on this a little bit earlier, but shouto was particularly difficult to analyze. it's hard to tell what's natural and what was instilled in him by his father. but the good thing is that his character development in itself has its place in his chart (saturn, north node......). overall, he has way more fire and earth placements than air or water, and that's no surprise. he has a very grounded but ambitious energy to him. he's motivated – there's definitely a fire in him – but he doesn't (often) let it get the best of him. he's still really grounded and logical. i think this amount of earth might indicate that his transformation might not be particularly smooth, as earth signs can be a bit stubborn. additionally, his fire placements might indicate a bit of a destructive side, and it probably also has to do with that character development. he's so set in his ways that he likely has to burn the old shouto to the ground in order to change. i think his chart really does fit him!! i'd be interested to see his progressed chart – that's not something i'd even think about with a lot of the other characters i've analyzed, but his development is so central to the story and there's so much emphasis on it that it would probably be an interesting comparison.

partly because they have incredible female characters, yeah (root (poi) and the biologist (southern reach) are two of my favourite characters of all time and poi in particular also has shaw, carter, the machine, control, kara... so many good women) but also because they are both just legitimately incredible in so many other ways, too. especially the southern reach series.

off the top of my head some other stuff with female characters that are fun in the way men usually get to be:

yknow as much as the (deserved) inazuma backlash has clearly changed hoyos writing for the better i do think there v much is one completely wrong lesson theyve taken from it and thats incorporating story quests into the AQ sequence (and specifically how theyve never attempted it again)

the concept itself was Never inherently bad. in fact it unironically has a ton of potential bc you could lessen the need for sudden character specific exposition in the AQ AND pull off way more high-stakes and timeline-specific plotlines in the SQs by ensuring players will experience it at the intended place and time.

the issue was that they introduced a bleak depressing inazuma in the middle of a fucking civil war and then went omg AQ on pause!!! lets go to a festival with ayaka and u will be her first friend ever OwO yoimiyas is at least vastly better written and actually involves the VH and sakoku decrees so its always been a favorite of mine but even then im sure theres things worth criticism in there its just been 2 years so i cant analyze it off the top of my head. but the greatest offender has always been the way ayakas comes with such a complete tonal dissonance it just takes you out of the atmosphere they spent the entire act I building up.

and it rly makes me sad bc i Know hoyo took the backlash about interrupted pacing and disjointed tone as "ok story quests bad as AQ requirements" when its like. no the one you wrote just sucked

AQ incorporated story quests need to have a damn good reason to be mandatory at that specific point and while its far from perfect i DO think yoimiyas fulfills that! but ayakas doesnt! at all! and like im realizing the issue is also in how genshins made it a standard that a character must receive a story quest Instantly on release. so i guess ayakas had to be in between acts I and II for plot reasons but like. that being the case then the story quest itself shouldve focused on a completely different theme as opposed to her very predictable tropey personal problems that werent even explored properly imo. like im sure plenty of depth and nuance in her characterization was lost in translation but i almost cry laughed the first time the restaurant vendor went "oh ayaka is lonely because she is so perfect that no one sees her as a friend but instead an aspiration" like what in the 3rd grader writing mary sue self insert fic tarnation 💀 you couldve worded that exact same concept in 12 different ways to make it actually sound poignant and you did That SHAHSKSJSKDLJH

(and a quick addition before i get accused of being a blind hater hater lmao. here goes: "the burdens of miss ayakas position as the public face of the kamisato make it difficult for her to shed the mask of practiced perfection. i think people struggle to see her as a person whod enjoy simple things in life like friendship just like everyone else when theyre so used to viewing her as an unreachable figurehead." there. now its way more clearly nuanced. this took me 3 minutes and is far from any fluid writing yet. the difference is staggering)

but like. as a result this ambiguous timeline limbo most story quests end up falling into is genuinely a shame bc i do think theres potential in attempting the ayaka n yoi thing again but with characters for whom it makes sense and actually enhances the AQ experience by necessitating it. and yeah yeah ik genshin wants to be casual friendly so they dont want to force ppl to do quests they dont like for AQ so its unrealistic to expect them to ever try it out again but man

as long as they pick the right place and time and characters for it they could massively alleviate the issue of some story quests contents ending up feeling like somewhat empty fluff bc they cant assume what point a player will be in the main plot could be so they lack actually impactful lore and or character beats.

obviously im not a writer at hoyo and idk how much backlash the ayaya/yoi situation got them but like. idk. taking the lesson "never do anything like inazuma again" isnt rly what id consider the full picture. inazuma does suck and has clunky moments throughout but like in 2.0 people were still hype! inazuma had good ideas and concepts and attempted sth that couldve been great the issue isnt inazuma bad on all levels its that they never delivered its potential and 2.1 was an incredible letdown.

#like idk i dont want to assume but. i Daresay of recent quests. neuvillettes SQ will NOT hit the same if its not in between acts 4 and 5 #it does SO MUCH to expand on his character and relationship to fontaine and humanity and as a result act 5 emotional climax hits so hard #bc youve literally Been there seeing him retrospect on the way he and the melusines have gone from distrusted outsiders #to beloved members of the community. like hes super well written in the AQ either way but witnessimg that growth does sooo much for him #& adds weight to his ultimate choice to forgive the original sin of fontaines people. but played post act 5 idk if will hit the same at all #its still gonna be good im sure but. it was so scrumptious in between acts 4 and 5 #anywau. idk i just think more charaxters could get expanded moments and interesting dynamic stories #if this option of an AQ tied story quest was utilized well #thats all its just my thoughts in here. bouncing in my skull. slappimg together like fish in a barrel #genshin #rambles

What order should I listen to mewithoutyou albums in

this is a great question thank u !!! imo it depends on what genres u tend to go for, bc there are a couple of major shifts that happen for mwy.

if ur not afraid of some noise, their earlier post-hardcore adjacent stuff, a to b life and catch for us the foxes would be good starts (a to b life is better imo, but obviously thats a matter of personal taste).

if ur more folksy/indie then i think their album its all crazy! ... (long title) would be a better and more accessible start. it also has some of the best storytelling imo, although that could be a matter of argument as well.

i will say that i started with brother, sister which imo is probably their best and most cohesive work so if ur pretty neutral on genres then that would be my personal recommendation! i also skipped around and just listened to individual songs a lot before getting rly invested in them so while i do think their full albums are great and cohesive i don't think full context is always needed to appreciate them!
