IT'S DONE

THE DUCKS

Critique is tomorrow but I got this thing done at like, 3AM today and everything's all dry now and I'm so happy to finally be making this post so I'm putting it up earlier than I normally do 😭😭

Assignment details below but warning, it's like an adventure log cause holy crap I have so much to say about this

The assignment was to make a structure that:

Had a mechanical function (minimum two)

Included at least one found object (i.e., something that was not provided by the instructor)

Included at least one carved element

...so there was a lot going on for this. I've never carved before, hence why I panick made those ducks a few weeks ago. They were a failsafe, juuuust in case I couldn't figure out the whole "carve a bird" thing in time. Luckily they weren't needed, though if I wasn't in such a hurry I might not have gotten this weird looking cut on my finger that likely won't fully heal :') (battle scars, so it's okay)

They really did take a long time to carve though. For frame of reference, it took about:

~6 hours of listening to people play Phasmophobia for ducky #1

Another 5-6 of listening to Majora's Mask gameplay for ducky #2

About 3-4 hours of various My House videos for the smallest ducky #3 (thanks again for the recommendation 🙏 I was running out of things to fill the silence to)

I'm glad I started them as early as I could, especially with the breaks needed to let my fingers heal because I'm bad w/ knives.

I speed learned how use a sewing machine (thanks mom for letting me borrow it); I didn't have to make the outfits but they're cute so I don't regret it lol. I put elastic or snaps on all of them so they're all removable... maybe I'll make more outfits for them in the future?

I counted my found object as some plexiglass I picked up somewhere, and it turns out, it's not really hard to cut it. Apparently it's not hard to cut real glass either but I wasn't allowed to use it 'cause it's easier to break. I kinda like the window, I wasn't sure about how it'd look at first but I really think it makes it look more polished :D

The red handle was a last minute addition. I quite literally used a spare piece of wood at 1AM this morning and speed carved+painted it. Since it didn't have any major grooves like the ducks, I could saw it down close to the size it needed to be and then carve/sand off the edges to round it off, so I got it done in about an hour and a half. I'm glad I did because I accidently painted the frame a little took dark and needed something to help tie it in a little better. It's still dark, but it sticks out slightly less now??? I hope haha.

I had a lot less trouble using the power tools on campus this time around. That's not saying much because I never really had much trouble in the first place but still, they're nowhere nearly as intimidating as they look.

All in all it was a lot of fun, and I can't wait 'til it's graded cause I'm really excited to bring it home for good :D

A knock at the large door shocked the boys, Yuta going over to open it, 3 tall men and a girl around their age on the other side.

"Hello," a man in a gray suit with the nametag 'Leeteuk' looked the group up and down, "you must be the gentlemen who work here. Is there a manager?"

"I guess that would be me?" Taeyong walked towards him, sticking his hand out, "I'm Taeyong, pleasure to meet you, sir."

"Likewise," Leeteuk shook Taeyong's hand, wiping his hand on his pants as Taeyong gestured the others to come inside, "this is Shindong and Heechul, and my secretary, Y/N."

The group bowed, Y/N keeping her eye on the tall boy whose coveralls were embroidered with "Johnny" in red thread on the left side of his chest.

"Now," Leeteuk threw his suitcase at Y/N, the girl catching and holding it to her side, "I assume you boys are willing to take the offer? I mean, judging on how this place works, you could use the money."

"Wel-"

Taeil was cut off by Leeteuk, "Don't tell me you're thinking about not taking the offern? 10,000 for you must be a lot."

"It is," Taeyong hid the disgust on his face for the cocky male, "but this is also our home, we've been here for years, some of us have even stayed here when we had nowhere else to go. One grand a piece isn't enough to make us part with this place."

"How about we talk about this?" Leeteuk threw his hands in a smug manner, "Shindong, Heechul, go with the others while I talk to Mr. Taeyong."

"What do yo-"

"Oh, that's right, Y/N is here too," Leeteuk looked at the group, "Lanky boy, what's your name?"

"I can tell you it's not Lanky Boy," Johnny looked up, displaying his name on his clothes, "I assume you can read, seeing as you are a huge CEO?"

Y/N and Johnny's nine friends started laughing, Leeteuk whipping his head around to give an annoyed stare at his secretary, the girl immediately halting all actions and staring at the floor. Leeteuk threw his hand over the shoulder of Taeyong as the tourgroups began to break off, Johnny and Y/N shaking each other's hands.

"Taeyong my boy, let's go talk," Leeteuk practically dragged Taeyong away from his friends, the leader looking at the other mechanics with a concerned look on his face.

"Is he always like that?" Johnny asked Y/N, the boy picking up a rag and wiping some grease off his face.

"Do you always keep those googles on?" Johnny touched his face at Y/N's comment, playfully rolling his eyes.

"They're stylish, but back to that Lettuce dude."

"It's Leeteuk and You'd be surprised how kind he can actually be when he's not talking about business," Y/N scoffed, looking around the huge area, machines, wood and metal decorating the space.

"Ah," a simple word out of Johnny's mouth as he notices Y/N's interest, "would you like to take a look around? None of the tools are plugged in, so no Final Destination deaths here."

Y/N awkwardly chuckled at the sight of the handsome boy, "umm, yeah, sure."

"We call this Ellie," Johnny pointed to a big machine, picking up a giant tube, "she helps us clean up faster, sucking up all the dust and dirt."

Y/N smiled and nodded along, watching Johnny excitedly go from machine to machine.

"Here we have a wood splitter, nothing fancy, just sort of does what its name says it does," Johnny gestured to a small room inside the workspace, "we call this the tool prison, drills, hammers, nails, screws, you name it, it's in there."

Johnny pulled out a chainsaw, pretending to rev it up as Y/N jumped back, still quiet so she won't interrupt Johnny's excitement.

"I call this Betsy, she's been my tool since day 1," Johnny showed Y/N the carved out name in the side of his chainsaw, "she's a bit old, but still works."

"How did you get into mechanics and tools?" Y/N walked over to a table, a nailgun, a drill and some screws scattered on the top.

"They're sexy," a laugh from Y/N causing Johnny to make fingers gun, "but seriously, Taeyong and Taeil needed someone else to help them with their projects and I was in the same woodshop class with them a few years ago."

Y/N walked around, exploring the shop, "do you want to continue giving me the tour?"

"Sure, why not? Y/N gently smiled, continuing to look around as Johnny watches her walk around, noticing her skirt keeps raising up, the girl having to pull it down every few steps.

"Why do you work for that Leek Dance dude?" Johnny sat next to the table saw, keeping his eyes on Y/N, "like he's such a douche."

"He's my stepbrother's friend," Y/N walked over to Johnny, "the one with the pinkish hair? Heechul? He's my stepbrother and one of Leeteuk's best friends. Leeteuk offered him a job and said he would only take it if I could have an internship."

Johnny nods, swinging his legs, "an internship? That's it? Do you get paid?"

So Dylan (my husband) took levels in carpentry. He's no master carpenter but he can make furniture. His absolute favorite thing to do is to get gnarly tree roots or branches and carve them into odd length walking sticks and then sell them at the local wood shop. It's easier to use a stick instead of a cane (my back hurts a LOT from using my cane but never with a stick) and different people are different heights. Plus, something people don't think about is there are incredibly short people or even children. So why not have something beautiful and sturdy?

What he does is he carefully exposes what it is about the piece of wood that is unique. Are the different bark layers different colors? He'll strip the bark carefully to have a gradient flowing up the stick until the heart of the wood, its true color as it were, is exposed. Did it have a lot of branches? Find a way to show off the cool knots. Basically, he works with what he has to let the thing speak for itself. Less actual carving like swirls or whatever and more revealing what it is that makes that stick special. Takes less technical carving skill but a good eye for natural beauty. My uncle carved my grandmother her cane before he passed and while it's a beautiful piece, it is definitely carved if that makes sense

Anyway, as you know I love arting and crafting and making pretty things with my hands. Because of church, I know how to embroider, quilt, scrapbook, make pretty much anything you could ever want from cloth from actual clothes to scripture holders, and all the usual home stuff afab people get taught in YWs. I know how to knit (with a loom), make paper art, draw traditionally, paint traditionally (and know how to stretch my own canvas), create beautiful digital art, create rough architecture blueprints that are less rough with minecraft now, stain wood, cook, make rugs, and basically if there is a craft out there I don't know, I learn very quickly as I'm great with my hands and my hand-eye coordination is fantastic. Dylan, knowing this, encouraged me to take up wood burning. Painting is difficult as I don't have an easel and unless I find a comfy recliner or wheelchair stat, I can't feasibly paint anytime soon. Due to disability (and lack of materials) there are a great number of hobbies I can no longer engage in as there I'd nothing but pain and frustration. I was a little intimidated, I'll admit, because I had no idea what a wood burning tool looked like and how would I work it anyway? From my time around big saws and other wood working machinery, I wondered if it would be something unwieldy and dangerous

Plus, let's be honest. I have a very hard time justifying spending money on myself if it's more than $5 at a time

He'd been goading me into it since November. He'd basically finished up my stick except for staining and he knew I'd want to burn it. But I hemmed and hawed. Finally, we had a pretty decent paycheck with loads of money leftover and he talked me into it. Even got that nice flat piece to get me started before taking the tips to my stick

It has been a genuine blast and a complete delight. It's like a very hot, very fat pencil and he saw right away I was going to need gloves or I'd burn myself and have loads of scars all over my fingers and hands. I'm glad he did because it hasn't been a day and already my gloves have marks on them. He got real expensive deerskin so they'd be able to move with my fingers and give me more mobility than anything else. They were expensive too and wouldn't hear any complaints I had about money. He wasn't going to have me melting my flesh or unable to do delicate work like I like

What I've been doing is outlining the thin layers of bark he left. He noticed that while the outermost layers were ugly, the innermost were interesting. You can see the grain in a way you can't with the lighter wood and you have a cool looking shade that's a nice contrast to that lighter heart. I've been going over them with the round tip (really good for drawing and writing as it's super smooth) and doing those hair thin lines with the point tip. It feels very similar to drawing a fantasy map all over my stick

I'm about 1/3 of the way up my stick though definitely not 1/3 of the way finished. I lose hours at a time bent over and carefully burning. I found out I can take the tips off hot and put them in a ceramic dish to minimize cool off and maximize time spent working. Which is critical for me as I can't spend more than about three hours tops bent over burning

It's so fun because it's like line art but it's on a piece of wood so it feels like I'm doing something new. It's very methodical and cathartic and I lose so much time focusing on doing this. It keeps me calm and downright happy! Which is EXCELLENT because it means I'm combatting seasonal depression in a very big way. I've already agreed to do this with all of his pieces to enhance what he's already carved. Eventually I'll probably Do Things like Actual Wood Art but for now I'm happy with this

We already have some projects planned too by the way!!! He loves making furniture and he can build better stuff for cheaper than buying it from a furniture store. So he's going to build a lift top coffee table and a dresser for sure that I'll burn. The first piece I want us to do, I'll burn the wood BEFORE he cuts it and see how that turns out. It'll be a little box (probably to hold bunny stuff) but I want to see if that does something unique or if it just is bad. If it's not something we like, hey I didn't waste weeks or months on something huge that ended up looking bad

We're probably going to make all the tables and dressers that go in our home. Maybe an entertainment center. I know we'll make my sister stuff just on the condition she pays for materials and getting it into her place. We'll probably make stuff for people who want it and I KNOW he's willing to take commissions. Closest family (parents, my sister, etc) will only have to pay for materials/shipping. Friends and other family will probably pay that and a little extra because friends and family discount. Everyone else is gonna have to pay retail value on top of materials and shipping because they'd get a unique piece you can't find anywhere else and it'd be worth it y'know?

But that's like way off sometime eventually probably

For now, I LOVE this new hobby. I can't wait to see what my stick is going to look like finished! I'm going to burn "support" on the bottom in kanji before the no slip grip goes on. Not really for any particular reason so much as like. Sentimental? I guess? Kind of like I'm burning a prayer for it to be sturdy and useful and good into it. I tried carving my wife's kanji on it (the first kanji of his middle name means dragon) but it didn't work out well so I'm gonna burn it onto the top and that'll be its name. Again, sentiment. There is also power in naming things and like. Just in case?

It has been such a very long time since I've been able to make something with my hands that I had the materials for and I'm just absolutely pink over it. I really super want people to see this stick and want some useful beauty for themselves that I can give. I love giving and making and seeing people smile over stuff I've made. It's been such a long time since something I've done has made someone smile and I just really want to bring that back y'know?

Anyway thank you for letting me gush. I just super love this and like yeah it's the butchest hobby like ever (according to Phoebe who has the most femme hobby ever of macrame) but it really fits me. It sparks joy in a way I haven't felt in a very very long time and I can't wait to see all the things I can do

For those dealing with an actual haunting or entity attachment, these steps will clear it out of your house. Before you begin going through the steps, I recommend a mini-fasting exercise prior to the final clearing phase. It's a way to be mindful of the upcoming exercise. You may choose to give up chocolate for a day. You might opt to skip a meal. Maybe you avoid caffeine or alcohol for some time period leading up to your clearing. Remember that you need your energy for the decluttering and cleaning part, so don't do a full day fast before a big cleaning day. Use good judgement.

Read through all of the steps before beginning. A supply list is at the bottom of the instructions.

Step 1: Clear your home of clutter. When negative energy is stuck in our homes, that "stuck" feeling that's vibrating throughout may emerge as some tendencies toward hoarding. Clear out the clutter. You have more than you think you do. As you let go of things, pick them up with a feeling of gratitude. In your heart you can be thankful for what that item contributed and release it from your life. Send it away with a joyful heart in hopes that it might inspire joy elsewhere. If it's an item that has a very negative feeling attached to it, it's a good idea to dispose of it instead of donating.

Step 2: Joyfully clean your house. You have just done a great job clearing out clutter and now it's time to get dust, dirt, and grime out of your life. While cleaning with a smile on your face may not be your modus operandi, in this case it's important. Take a moment to appreciate the things you are cleaning. You're cleaning them because they are important to you. They either serve a function and purpose in your life, of they bring you joy. Treat them as such. You are clearing away negativing, and part of the process is learning to express positivity.

Step 3: Clean your body. Take time after decluttering, cleaning, and hopefully mini-fasting to take a shower or a nice bath. There's a visualization practice I recommend during your bath. If you're from a religious affiliation that practices baptism, you can visualize it as a baptism. I generally visualize the water washing over my body's energy field (biofield or aura), washing away any residual negativity that may be sticking around.

Step 4: Prepare your supplies. You can opt to use only white sage in your clearing (directions for use below), but I'm providing you details for an expanded tool kit for clearing. There are four commonly recognized spiritual elements (Earth, Air, Water, and Fire) that are most frequently recognized today within the new age spiritual movement. In reality, these elements were acknowledged in early Christianity as well and were notably mentioned by St. Francis of Assisi, and by earlier religions all over the world. Sage and Palo Santo Wood represent two of those components (fire and air- smoke). For a bundle of sage, you light the end, let it burn for 10-12 seconds, and then blow it out. It will smoke for quite a while after you blow it out. Palo Santo is a piece of wood. It's commonly referred to as holy wood. That you light at one end (like with the sage) but you let it burn for one minute before blowing it out. In either case, there is a cleansing smoke that is released from the embers of the dried leaf or wood. I use a feather to fan the smoke into corners and tight spaces and feathers also represent air. I also use either holy water or fresh water (rain, river, stream) and I use natural sea salt (no iodine added) for earth. I gather the materials and pray for help and guidance in clearing away the negativity and any spirits or non-corporeal entities that may be present. If prayer isn't something you're comfortable with, you can simply visualize filling each of the instruments in front of you with loving white light. If you don't know what to say for the prayer, I recommend something along these lines. "God, you know the torment we each face in our lives. Today I humbly ask for your help to purify my home. I wish for only love and light to linger in these rooms. Please send your guardian angels to protect me as I work to cast out anything unholy. Please bless this sage and this Palo Santo wood as it burns. Please allow the smoke to purify our home. Please bless this water sent from heaven and use it to wash away the stains of darkness. Please bless this salt from our blessed planet Earth and use it to ground and purify me, my family, and all that pass through these doors in our faith and belief in your power. Please bless my feet, that they will know where to go. Bless my heart, that it will know what is true. Bless my hands that they be used to do your will. Bless my throat that I know what to say. Bless my eyes that they may appreciate all that you have created. Bless my mind that I may trust in you. Thank you for you love and guidance. Amen."

Step 5: Plan your path. Start by opening your windows. If you have an older home with windows painted shut, you can open the doors instead. We're going to go room by room smoking out the dark energy, so take your time and be thorough. You want to always allow the energy or entity a way out. I'll address what to do if you accidentally smoke it into a corner later. If your home is one single story, start just to the left of your front door and work counterclockwise through your home. If it is multi-story do below ground (basement) first, then work from the highest floor down toward the front door. For each room you will move counterclockwise through the room and you will use the feather to fan smoke into every single corner and crevice. Open every closet, every drawer, every cabinet. Dark energy and entities are repulsed by the smell and the smoke. You've put a lot of work into this so far, so don't cut corners. The next few steps will be completed in each room as you move through your home.

Step 6: Sage your rooms. As you move through your home, use the feather or your breath to move smoke from the white sage into each corner. If you have particularly difficult to clear out stuck energy you can use sound to help you. Play inspiring music as you sage or ring a bell or clap in areas where energy gets stuck. Energy gets stuck in closets, corners, and under beds. Anyplace with very little movement is going to tend to get stuck energy. So, sage (counterclockwise starting to the left of the door) throughout the room finishing at the door. This will move any entity or negative energy out of the room. You have just cleared the room with fire and air.

Step 7: Bless or anoint your room with holy water. Add your sea salt to the rainwater (both of which have been blessed by your prayer or your intent). Dip your fingers into the now salty rainwater and flick it into each corner of the room. If you would like, you can also draw a cross on your door or over your doorway. You have just blessed the room with water and earth.

Step 8: Fill your room with love. You've just removed clutter, cleaned, cleared, and blessed your room. Now as you walk out of the room, turn back to it, smile, and imagine refilling that room with love. Imagine the joy that will take place there. You are mentally establishing and evoking something very special. Either out loud or in your mind, give thanks for all the help you received in making that room safe.

Step 9: Repeat steps 6-8 in each room of the house (including closets), as well as the garage and the attic if feasible. In the event you feel you have missed a spot and now you've saged all the rooms that's ok. Use your hands to draw an imaginary window in the air. In your mind, open that window and allow any remaining energy an opportunity to leave. Chances are, this is completely unnecessary, but I've found that some people prefer to cover it just in case.

Step 10: Use Palo Santo to put an added shield around your home. Now you've cleared out the negative energy and entities. Your home is a clean slate. Using Palo Santo raises the vibration to a light happy place. Palo Santo also acts as a shield or cloak. Once the entities are out of the house, the Sage makes it where they will not want to come back in. Palo Santo makes it so that it's hard for them to even FIND you.
