@pizzee Thank you for the tagging me to join in on the TV show tag game! I have the exact opposite problem to you in that I watch way too many shows. There's so many I've watched in the last few months alone that I've absolutely loved (Andor, Severance, Poker Face, The Sandman, The Last of Us, Vox Machina, etc etc) but for this I think I'll stick with the ones that I've connected to and cherished the most of the years. It wasn't required or even asked for but all of you are getting Backstory™ for these whether you like it or not. Anyway, in no particular order, here they are:

Moon Knight: Wow, I like the show that is now my defining personality trait? Shocker. But, no, seriously, I don't think I've latched onto a show or group of characters so quickly in my life, or so intensely before. This show has (as of posting this) made me write almost 200k worth of fic about it. I got bloody Discord because of this show because the brainrot was so intense. I am part of a fandom community for really the first time in my life because of this show. It's no exaggeration to say that this show has had a huge impact on me; the dinosaurs got off easy in comparison.

Lucifer: I started watching this show when Season 2 premiered way back in 2016 and I was there watching it up until the end. It was silly and emotional and heartwarming and campy, and the characters were amazing (do I own shirts that Ella Lopez wore in the show? Yes, yes I do.) and the music was excellent. This show loved the heck out of metaphors, and I am not immune to that. Or Tom Ellis.

The Owl House: I used to be obsessed with owls when I was younger (the 'Owls of Ga'Hoole' movie was my jam, and—I'm sorry Zack Snyder directed that??? What the f—ahem, sorry, as I was saying:), and while that particular interest faded over the years, I do remember I was drawn to this show because of the name, and then the premise, and then the characters (Hunter gets a gold star for making me go "argh this guy is annoying" to "I would die for him" within a span of two appearances), and then so, so many things. I've loved a lot of cartoons, many of which deserve a spot on this list, but this one just hits so many of the right notes for me. I will die mad that Disney robbed us of a full season 3, but I will always cherish what we got.

Adventure Time: The first show I ever binged in full, and essentially what kickstarted my career as a Tumblrite (my logo was Marceline for many a year—if you find my *gag* Wattpad account it'll still be there). I still have doodles for this show from when I was 14 (many of which were Bubbline, which was also my first ship). I am the silly little Tumblr fool I am today because of this show.

Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes: I used to watch this show on TV as a kid, random episodes here and there, never enough to truly understand what was going on but enough to know the characters. It was how I first came to know Marvel, long before I even liked superheroes, and it was the reason I watched 'The Avengers', which in turn was the reason I went and saw 'Age of Ultron' (the first MCU movie I ever saw at the cinema) and then, well, the rest is history. But it all started here, with this show. (Also, let's be real, the theme song slaps.)

Doctor Who: specifically the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor's seasons, though I love Ten's as well (even if 'Midnight' and the following Library episodes—episodes I now adore—scared me off from the show for almost 7 years). I might have also been a little in love with Clara. This show has made me sob with true and utter grief (musical motifs that will make you cry without warning and other secrets your Doctor won't tell you!) and also made me feel like I'm taking acid. It's got the range darling.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: I've watched this whole thing three times. It's just…It's good. It's really good. The world, the characters, the animation/visuals, the god damn narrative. I'm still in awe of how masterful this anime was. I aspire to this level of multilayered, intelligent storytelling… and also the level of comedy. It too has the range. And god I love when shows can do that well.

Bee and Puppycat: I used to watch the YouTube series for this (along with 'Bravest Warriors' and a bunch of other Cartoon Hangover shorts) as a tween and it's just a very fond, cosy memory for me. And now there's the Netflix version and it's been wonderful to not only get more of what was already there, but more to the story in general. My childhood self is being tucked into bed and wrapped in a blanket, content in the knowledge that things left unfinished are not always over.

That really is the tip of the iceberg of all the shows I've loved over the years but we'd be here for a month of Sundays if I went on about all them, so I'll take my leave now and pass on the baton. I'm going to tag @yellowocaballero, @mockspector, @theophagism and @aster-o1d. Have fun! :3

1) We've seen bombs scattered around the Land of Ooo before, but this is the first time we've seen the word "fission", confirming that they are nukes. Although we have seen the radiation roundel plenty of times so it's pretty obvious.

2) The "magic lightning" that created the Glass Kingdom could itself have been one of the nukes. Alternatively, it could have been the catalyst comet, although Finn has no connection to this place so that's probably not the case.

3) The subtitles for the first four minutes video suggested that Glassboy was saying "crap" here. However, the HBO Max subtitles confirm he is actually saying "crack".

4) All of Marceline's classic furniture is present, but Bubblegum's influence is very visible; a doily on the couch, a flask underneath, new barstools from the Candy Kingdom, and the pink lamp in the bedroom, just to name a few examples.

5) Lady Rainicorn slippers. That is all.

6) Chocoberry on the cover of a magazine. Looks like she's been dipped in white chocolate for this shoot.

7) This is the first time we've seen Choose Goose since he appeared as "Achoos Goose" in the Elements miniseries. Last time we saw his normal form was all the way back in season five's "Blade of Grass", nearly seven years ago. Is it weird that Choose Goose was the first thing in the episode to make me cry?

8) It appears that Princess Bubblegum has not rebuilt the Gumball Guardians since they were destroyed in the battle against GOLB.

9) There are lots of familiar candy people in and around the tavern, from a variety of seasons, including Kenneth, Dirt Beer Guy, Cherry Cream Soda, a Banana Guard 500, Lollipop Girl, and Smudge.

10) Simon is of course singing "Remember You". He is also using the omnichord that was used in that episode. Interestingly, this suggests he might remember some of his experiences as the Ice King.

11) This isn't the first time Dirt Beer Guy's tavern has hosted an open mic night. He also held one in "Son of Rap Bear", and even used the same banner, although it's looking a little tattered and worn out now.

12) Simon doesn't look any older than he did in the finale. This might mean that Betty's wish made him immortal, or it simply might not have been long enough for him to visibly age.

13) This is the oversized shirt given to Marceline by her father in the episode "Marcy & Hunson". It's looking a little faded these days.

14) Bubblegum's outfit is of a similar style to the one in "The Vault", but it's not the same. The fact she's not wearing her amulet might suggest this flashback takes place after "The Vault", but nothing is known for certain.

15) There are gravestones outside Marceline's house, but these actually aren’t new. They previously appeared in “Go With Me”. So don’t worry, these don’t belong to Jake or anything like that.

16) Simon's coping mechanism would be funny if it wasn't so sad. It's going to be a long time before he fully recovers. On a lighter note, the magnets on the fridge say "M PB" which is pretty cute.

17) This is our first time seeing the outside of Elise's van. We previously saw the interior in "Everything Stays". Also, we learned from the credits and subtitles that her name is Elise!

18) Previously, it wasn't known whether or not Elise survived the Mushroom War. Turns out she did... but not for long. It's also now unclear whether the flashback from "Everything Stays" happened before or after the war.

19) A nice little timeline detail: Marceline travelling with her mother for a while explains the awkward two year gap between the Mushroom War and the events of "Simon & Marcy".

20) Here's a comparison of the parts of Marceline's song that got corrupted into the current version. The Glass People got really obsessed with the idea of the song being about coconuts for some reason.

21) PB yelling "Scree!" to summon the Morrow is a callback all the way to the season two episode "Death in Bloom", which is when the Morrow made their debut.

22) Disease is added to the long list of things that helped wipe out humanity. I wonder if this disease is related to the one that Hugo and his crew gave to the grays in the BMO special. I also wonder if Marceline is immune thanks to her demon half.

23) The mutant puppy was able to say the word "wassup". Perhaps this is a halfway stage to the talking animals that now populate the Land of Ooo.

24) Turns out Marceline discovered her demon powers before she defeated the Fool. This is the first appearance of these kinds of soulless husks since "It Came From the Nightosphere" in season two.

25) This is the first new candy power we've seen Princess Bubblegum use since she learned how to create mints and soda in "Jelly Beans Have Power".

26) Marceline not caring about the glass people is very in line with her personality in the early seasons, such as when she was happy to let her father suck souls as long as she got her bass back.

27) No Easter egg here, just an extremely good image.

28) Here's the screenshot leaked by Adam Muto last month. Like the gas station in "Bonnibel Bubblegum", the graffiti here tells an interesting story. Seems like the Land of Ooo had a bit of a Mad Max phase while the humans were still around.

29) This is (as far as I know) only the second time an Adventure Time character has ever been shown bleeding. The first was the heart monster in "The Enchiridion", but that was a lot less realistic.

30) The fact that humans survived long enough to construct a whole Fallout-style bunker confirms that the near-extinction of humanity wasn't a quick process. It makes you wonder whether any other groups made it, besides the Islanders.

31) Apart from this being one of the darkest scenes in the entire show, I like the background detail of bank notes being used as toilet paper.

32) Marceline grew up blaming herself for her mother leaving, and says she is like her dad. It sounds like Elise has told Marceline a bit about Hunson Abadeer, and is scared and angry at him.

33) This actually isn't the first time Marceline's bass has been broken. She also snapped the handle during her fight with the Vampire King. However, it's never been completely shattered like this.

34) This might be a reference to the Hall of Egress. That's the only other time we've heard Bubblegum use that word.

35) Confirmation that Princess Bubblegum doesn't have bones. I guess that counts as lore?

36) The gag of the Banana Guards slipping over each other was also done in "The Thin Yellow Line" and probably some other episodes I'm forgetting.

37) Jake’s granddaughter Bronwyn is certainly an unexpected appearance. I wonder what affiliation she has with the main cast now?

38) And of course... FINN! I would estimate he's aged about five to ten years since the finale, but it's hard to tell with Adventure Time's style. He looks younger than he did in Puhoy's alternate future.

39) Lots of people have been theorising that the tattoo implies that something unfortunate has happened to Jake. Perhaps we'll get to know more about that in Together Again. Let's not dwell on it for now.

40) A canon origin story for the shirt, plus a Bubbline first meeting! This overrides the P.B. & Marcy comic, and re-contextualises a whole bunch of the old Bubbline episodes!

Fanfic Friday 3: Bmo Character spotlight

Woop! It’s Friday again and you know what that means!

Now with Distant Lands coming out in less than a week on June 15th- I think now’s a good time to look at what Bmo fics there are. As there’s probably going to be a whole lot of them in a few weeks. 

For character spotlights I’m going to start off with what I think is the best fanfic currently out there about this character, which will get a detailed review, and then I’ll recommend some other pieces of writing. 

With that imo the best Bmo fic currently out there is: Flowers for Bmo, King of Ooo by Princeofonesingledomain on Ao3

So first off this fic is about something I personally find really interesting: Ooo 1000 years later, the world Shermey and Beth inhabit. That part of the finale was absolutely heart wrenching and the perfect way to end a series about accepting change and letting things grow. Everything in Ooo ultimately stayed just as we left it, everything stayed but it still changed. 

This fic is three chapters long and opens on a strong, well written and enjoyable chapter about Shermey and Beth deciding to visit Bmo. The dialogue between these two is really good and distinctly Adventure Timely, especially in the way sadder aspects are handled. 

Also the jokes are really funny! Which is perfect for a duo at the start of their adventure- Shermey and Beth are at the same point of their story as early seasons Finn and Jake were. And the humor reflects that with jokes I can imagine being in a season 1 or 2 episode. 

Other little tidbits that tie nicely into the show are the little snippets we get of old Ooo - like Beth humming the food chain song as she looks for something to give Bmo, or the duo casually discussing Peppermint Butler who by the way HAS BECOME GUARDIAN OF A NIGHTOSPHERE PORTAL! There’s no boring exposition in the way we get this information, these things are just seamlessly placed in the narrative like references to old Ooo were in the episode Come Along With Me. So this fic feels like a good sequel to that episode from the get go and the second chapter only builds on this.

The second chapter focuses on Bmo and is much more melancholy, starting with Bmo sitting and staring at the clouds, thinking about how the way they change their shapes reminds them of someone? Jack? Jake? Or was it Phil? Which is a really nice example of character based description- the sort I love to see in a fanfic! 

This really draws you into Bmo’s centuries old mind. It’s peaceful, but still playful. Bmo has stayed the same, but also changed. 

This is also reflected in how superbly Bmo is written. Bmo is still charming and childish, they still mess around with their reflection friend football, but there’s an... age to Bmo now. A tiredness, a weariness and sense of loss that wasn’t there before. Which contrasts really well against Shermey and Beth who’s adventure is just beginning. 

In general this fic made me really emotional and is a really good dive into Bmo’s character, it also features a lovely song written by Marceline for Bmo that I can totally imagine being in the show and an absolute gut punch of an ending. 

I say ending in reference to the second chapter because that was originally when the fic was supposed to end, but the author graciously added an epilogue that brings together all the characters mentioned and has Bmo finally find his place in this new world, finally moving on from the past to be the friend to Shermey and Beth, a returned Bonnie and Marcy, a grown up Peppermint Butler and characters yet unmet that he was to Finn and Jake. 

Staying the same, yet changing. 

...You think the author’s done after writing the best Bmo fic I’ve ever read? Nope! Just as things couldn’t get any better, you find out this is part of a series and has not one, but TWO sequels! These are focused on other characters so I’m not going to review them, just list the summaries and encourage you to check them out:

Autumn Leaves -  Caught in a conflict between Sweet P. and a great returning evil, Shermy tumbles down a mountainside and meets someone who seems to know him, even though he's never seen her before. Could this be the Huntress Wizard BMO told him about?

A Grey Winter’s Bloom - How did Marceline get her wrinkles and grey hair? What happened to Simon? A night that starts as an attempted romantic evening for her and Bonnie ends up being more than Marceline ever bargained for. In BMO's house of many memories, Marceline finds Simon's glasses lying on a shelf. They remind her of a time that seems too long past to be real, but too personal to be far from her heart. Shermy, Beth and the others listen to her recount the first time she'd noticed Simon was growing old, and that there was nothing she could do to stop it.

With that another really good Bmo fic is Disk Check Error by Skyeel also on ao3.

-the super good writing of Bmo. Every line feels like it’s said by them. 

This fic is a homage to Bmo’s memory storage, which by now stores some of the addest, happiest, tensest and funniest moments of Ooo’s history. 

The first two memories we see are a cute Bubline fluff piece post “What Was Missing” which is Bmo at their cutest and most baby! The writing of them is in character and each piece of dialogue feels like it was taken from an actual show script. The bubbline in this is also adorable.

The second memory is equally cute- focusing on Bmo making a videogame for Finn as a birthday gift only for the Ice King to show up and for them to sort of.... collaborate? Either way it’s very sweet, Bmo is their usual childish self and the Ice King’s weird personality goes really well with theirs, meaning we get to see a sweet and playful side to Simon just as we do Bmo.

 Meanwhile, the beginning and end of each segment listing Bmo’s memory storage ties them all together. This seemingly related piece of data is revealed to be the size of another memory, which Bmo has had to rip out of their hard drive to make way for new memories. And the third memory- which is actually Bmo’s present 1000 years later deals with just this special data. 

Like in the first fic Bmo 1000 years later is slightly different, older than the Bmo we grew up with, something that this fic makes all the more poignant because we saw Bmo as they used to be right at the start. Bmo has two guests over and tells them a story. 

Now I’m not going to spoil the emotional core of this story but I am going to tell you what I really enjoyed about the final memory. 

It’s very rare for a fanfic to take full advantage of the written word as a medium and this one takes advantage of typographical features (fancy words for stuff in a text that’s visual e.g. font, punctuation etc) in a way that not only tells the story but is emotional. 

All in all, like the first fanfic this one links to the core theme of Adventure Time: that even if things change, from Simon and the Ice King to Marceline throughout the seasons to the land of Ooo itself, what truly matters about these things will always stay the same. Especially when that’s love. 

Some other lil Bmo fics I found enjoyable are:

A Real Boy- 7 very short 2-4 paragraph chapters detailing how Bmo wishes on an artefact Finn and Jake find to be a real boy, and ends up zapped into a parallel reality. 

This has some really cool moments as well as general Bmo cuteness- plus there’s some cannon x OC ship stuff that’s always nice to see. I love fan OCs and think they’re great fun if you can’t tell by my fankid horde. This has a cute ending too. It’s very short and can easily be finished in 10 minutes. 

Bmo’s Greatest Adventure - this one’s a lot longer and I haven’t fully finished it, though from what I’ve read so far it’s pretty nostalgic for early seasons Adventure Time as well as early 2010s Fanfiction. The characters are in character, Bmo is their plucky self and other than that this fic is what it says on the tin so here’s the author summary:

In the land of Ooo, before the Mushroom Wars, there was an ancient yellow computer chip held precious information about all of the secrets about rebuilding & maintain the society that was once e story was told that there will be a great computer mind to help translate and rebuild Ooo, but the chip was hidden away & So BMO's greatest adventure began.

The Treasure of two Robots - I’m a bit hesitant about reccommdending this as it’s written for the Bmo x NEPTR pairing and in it Bmo is referred to with she/her exclusively and just generally gendered as female. 

While Bmo is generally interpreted to be a genderfluid character, this comes off as a little erasing of all the times they’ve used he/him and seems like the writer is trying to avoid writing, y’know, gays. Though Bmo canonnically has no sex and is referred to with a variety of gendered forms throughout the show, including he, she, m’lady and others. None of which Bmo corrects or seems uncomfortable with/has preference for, so we can assume she/her is technically fine.

So as such I can’t fault people for writing Bmo to be leaning femininely in their fics if that’s how they see the character though it does come off as straightwashing of what should be an lgbt pairing - a male and a genderfluid person’s relationship isn’t straight. But like I said, this is just my suspicions based on the year this fic were written in. It could simply be author interpretation. There’s nothing in this fic to suggest Neptr doesn’t also love Bmo when they’re a boy, and that Bmo isn’t genderfluid. 

That said this is a very cute fic featuring human versions of Bmo and NEPTR that shows what NEPTR and Bmo get up to when Finn and Jake aren’t around, and Bmo’s playful nature contrasts well against NEPTR’s more reserved and meek personality so they end up working well together. Bmo encourages NEPTR to get stuck in and enjoy himself while NEPTR acts as a much needed voice of reason. It’s nice to read about Bmo having carefree fun after, y’know 

this. 

So that’s that! I may do another one about Bmo if Distant Lands gives us as many fics as I’m hoping it will... hopefully...

adventure time season 7 part 1 review

we finished the king of ooo arc!!!!!! all the way to the end of stakes!!!

anyway as u can tell from my excitement we had a blast. i think this is one of the most emotionally sincere parts of adventure time, and many of the episodes made me laugh far more than i ever did during season 6, so theyve very welcome. yeah, some eps at the start of season 7 are lacking laughs or visual cues due to lazy storyboarding, but there are plenty of excellent parts to make good for it... and the finale totally gripped me.

 lets go through the episodes and try to describe what i found exciting:

Bonnie and Neddy - theres just something really touching about this episode. seeing finn and jake in those armored suits is a little silly but good setbuilding for the king of monarchy the king of ooo is trying to run, and transitioning from finns description about the brilliance of the water to the king of ooo making a scam of it, pretty damn funny. but what was better was the backstory presented in this episode... bonnie descends from the mother gum into a new world full of promise and life, destiny child that she is, whereas neddy experiences terror and overstimulation. and seeing her just... worry about him, get sad when he didnt recognise her but protect him w the song and bring him home, man i loved it

Varmints - i dont think we ever got a bubbline episode THIS expressive before or since, not even in stakes. the humor was SO ON POINT that i was rolling on the ground while the emotional trains of thought the chars were going through was presented so well, there was no ambiguity that wasnt deliberately placed. king of ooo in the costumes was a nice chuckle and also set in place that peebles as a princess had waaaay more power than whatever the “king of ooo” was before to the extent he sees her clothes as symbols of that strength.  i swear hes literally named that by his parents. anyway shes in the denial/bargaining stage of grief and falls into the depression stage after her hat is stolen and she remembers everything she lost, also i love this ep cos they were so EXPRESSIVE. probably the best pb ep...ever? at least until season 8′s jelly beans have power. emotion is something deeply missing from stakes, which ill get into in a moment. 

the other three eps - i wanted 2 make a paragraph for each of the other three eps but they didnt stand out enough... HOWEVER, over time ive come to enjoy the strangely domestic nature of Dirt Beer Guy a lot more, also i like Mama Said for being a sweet lil Canyon ep that goes into what finn and jake think of their new job... Football was the most standout of all, just something unsettling about seeing bmo argue with its own inner psyche i mean football. enjoyable, uncomfortable, cute. 

Stakes - what a heartfelt insight into the past of marceline, her history as a vampire and perspective on the present... lets talk a bit about the strengths and weaknesses of stakes. 

I felt that the miniseries handled Marceline’s past as a vampire hunter, as a young girl who had just been abandoned, and as a toddler with her mother.... it pulled at the heartstrings in a way AT rarely does. my favourite part of this backstory was marceline’s relationship with the bunny girl, who weve come to believe is finn’s ancestor.   

i also felt it was glorious folowup to the season 6 ending and a pretty good use of having all the characters without any responsibilities to the candy kingdom. they went on a vampire hunting adventure together which was sweet.

my favourite scenes of the actual miniseries were the ones that involved the vampires... ice king not being brainwashed was a funny twist that i saw coming immediately, and marceline’s vengeance on her felt real, as did her struggle the moon was intimidating as heck and finn and jake were so bad at taking her out. the heirophant’s transformations were really cool, thanks emily partridge for that, and the VAMPIRE KING? hooo boy. star of the show. everything he did was just so wackyzany and unpredictable, and yet so meditated that it feels like he may be the greatest thinker in the show. he reminds me of zaheer, talking to a frustrated korra. since marceline looks and acts like korra throughout this miniseries the comparison is strong.

as for other elements, my favourite parts were the ones where pb either did something goofy or morbid or fucked up the king of ooo. if looks could kill... “A MONARCHY IS NOT A DEMOCRACY!!!” BAM. so satisfying.  and all the candy people hugging her, and her lil breakdown over marcy while pepbut prepares the magic. PEPPERMINT BUTLER, this miniseries sealed my love for him which only grew after Jelly Beans Have Power in season 8. 

the funiest part of this miniseries were finn and jake, and the best episode was Checkmate. the fart speech scene got so many laughs out of me and then peeblles joined in and said it waS EMERGENCY TALK ONLY AND THEN THE VAMPIRE KING HOLDS HIS NOSE OUT OF STENCH and yeah for all the above reasons, the vampire king, the humor,  Checkmate is the best episode. All of Finn and Jake’s other scenes were also amazing. they were fucking useless in this miniseries which, apparently, is where their humor shines most. 

...which leads to my CRITICISM: a lack of expression and humor during key scenes. this is mostly related to marceline, but also to bubblegum esp at the start. there were many scenes that held the same angle for to long where they were talking about their feelings, but their faces werent changing, and it was just... visually uninteresting, didnt feel as expressive as it could have been, especially after the brilliant faces in Varmints. marceline is usually such an expressive character, seeing her standing still and rambling was so meh. which is why her flashback scenes - so full of character - are superior to any scene shes in within the present day. i mean, jesus, she literally says she feels love for pb in the most deadpan and blande way. peebles can get away with it, cos she has some KILLER faces later (that one at the king of ooo) and has always been relatively expressionless, also her actions speak volumes. marceline’s strongest expressions (in the present) were when she desperately tried to kill the Empress and the Vampire King, which makes them my favourite scenes for her. 

i think Everything Stays is the defining song of adventure time. It encapsulates our experience with the whole show; AT usually builds up dramatic plots, only to anticlimactically return to the “status quo”, but what we realise later is that everyone is still affected, everyone is still changing. the princess has her kingdom back, but she’s not going to take her position for granted anymore, and has averted from her dark path for now. ice king is still the ice king, but he’s now building up some friends and finding genuine happiness in the land of ooo. finn lost his father again and got his arm back (for the time being), but he feels way less burdened by his emotions that he used to, far more grown. and the same goes for marceline... even though shes a vampire again, shes no longer as burdened by her past. she’s come to terms with it. 

even though the characters return back to normal at the end of stakes, islands, elements, the things they have gone through will remain with them and shape who they become. in recent times? we have been seeing the effects of Elements on the characters of Ooo. how far they’ve been affected we are yet to see, and im excited to find out.

A Definitive History of Bubbline

With “Obsidian” coming out in two days, it really is time for a definitive history of Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship. And by that I mean the tumultuous road that led us to “Obsidian” from a production and fandom point of view. For a list of Bubbline episodes, check out my Bubbline Guide (and part two) - which I need to update, I know I know. For this post, I wanted to highlight how far this pairing has come and what Bubbline means to queer representation in children’s cartoons.

This is less of an analysis and more of an overview with links to more information on specific incidents to keep it (relatively) brief. I say it’s a definitive history but it isn’t an exhaustive one, so do check out the links included to learn more about how we got here. I realize not everyone cares about these kinds of things but I think it’s important to know how hard Adventure Time’s creators had to fight. Bubbline is a pioneer ship in many ways but it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

Initial Concepts

As is the case with much of Adventure Time, the initial concept of who the characters of Bonnibel and Marceline were going to be is very different than what we ended up getting. @gunterfan1992 explores this and other production tidbits in depth in his book so I do recommend checking that out. The short version is that these two were created to be opposites and with a Betty and Veronica type dynamic in mind where they would both be love interest to the protagonist, Finn.

This didn’t quite end up being the case but remnants of this concept are seen in “Go With Me” (March, 2011), the episode with the first on-screen Bubbline interaction. As Marcy helps - and sabotages - Finn in asking Bonnie out, she also becomes a potential love interest for him but she shuts him down immediately. So while Finn’s crush on PB continues, the notion that Marceline would be part of a love triangle is dismissed. Instead, this first Bonnie and Marcy interaction established that the two already know each other and there’s some bitterness in that past.

“What Was Missing” and the Mathematical Controversy

A potential preexisting relationship between the two was further explored in “What Was Missing” (September 2011) just a season later. The episode was written and storyboarded by Rebecca Sugar and eventual showrunner Adam Muto. Sugar was responsible for much of the character depth added to Marceline and later even played, quite aptly, her mother in the Stakes miniseries. It was Sugar who wrote the now beyond iconic “I’m Just Your Problem” based on personal experiences and suggested that Marcy and Bonnie be queer characters with a complicated romantic past.

“What Was Missing” was hugely important in how it hinted at a complex relationship through character interactions, Marceline’s song, and the last scene twist with PB’s shirt. The AT crew were supportive of the idea and sneaked in plenty of queer subtext, but this is where I have to point out that 2011 was a very different time and it’s thanks, in part, to Bubbline that things have changed. Autostraddle’s article from back when covers what is now known as the Mathematical controversy. Audiences picked up on the subtext and Cartoon Network was not having it. The popularity of the ship soared but the execs were not taking to queer implications kindly.

Great Bubbline Drought

So, the ship has sailed but controversy looms over it. “What Was Missing” s subtle by today’s standards but it was enough to keep Marceline and Bubblegum apart for two years on-screen. Each character went through wonderful development in the meantime, as did the show itself, but there’s a certain sense of bitterness to what came to be known as the Great Bubbline Drought. CN got so afraid of the potential backlash that they waited two years to have a new episode featuring the pair, “Sky Witch” (July 2013), by which point Sugar had left AT to work on her own show, Steven Universe. I’m happy that Sugar got to create her own show and push for even more queer representation, but it’s also sad that she never got to write more for the ship she pioneered.

“Sky Witch” still happened, though, and featured even more subtext, from PB’s side this time around. The shirt returned and there was hope as Marcy and Bonnie were seen hanging out together more often (”Red Starved” and “Princess Day”). Another controversy threatened to emerge in August 2014 when Olivia Olson, Marceline’s voice actress said that creator Pendleton Ward had confirmed a pre-show Bubbline romance. It was a messy ordeal with deleted tweets and questions about whether the two could get together again in the series. Fortunately, though, things changed in the three years between 2011 to 2014 and another Bubbline drought didn’t follow.

The Season That Changed Everything

It took another two years after “Sky Witch” but the ball was finally, inevitably, relentlessly rolling. “Varmints” premiered in November 2015 and three episodes later, the Stakes miniseries kicked off. What season 7 meant wasn’t just breadcrumbs and (not so) subtle songs anymore: suddenly, there were too many Bubbline moments to count. “Varmints” served as a follow-up to “What Was Missing” and a final reconciliation, and though Stakes was primarily about Marcy, it also developed her relationship with Bonnie. Afterwards, it became clear that Bubbline was heading somewhere.

It’s worth noting that the cultural context also changed between when “Sky Witch” and “Varmints” aired. In December 2014, The Legend of Korra ended with Korra and Asami beginning their romantic relationship, and Rebecca Sugar was making Steven Universe more and more explicitly queer by the day. Adventure Time started the ball rolling but now it wasn’t alone as a popular Western cable cartoon with queer characters. However, Bubbline was still very much subtext at this point, just with significantly more hope of becoming more.

Late Series Entanglement

But at what point does subtext become plain text? Bubbline fans sure did have fun with that question between Stakes and the finale. Bonnie and Marcy became near inseparable, with most of their major appearances involving one another from this point on. These included the meet the adoptive dad date “Broke His Crown” (March 2016), the Elements miniseries (April 2017) and the nigh on obnoxiously on the nose “Marcy & Hunson” (December 2017). In fact, all but two of Marceline’s major appearances from season 7 on included Bonnie - the exceptions being “Everything Stays” as part of Stakes, and “Ketchup”, which really wasn’t any less gay.

Bubbline moments really did become too many to count, with the vast majority of them having romantic implications. And with queer representation becoming more and more prominent in Western animation, canon Bubbline romance seemed like a question of when rather than if. I’d like to point out here how this was often frustrating, though. After the very rocky start, this relationship was thriving and was really basically confirmed, but that last little push to make it undeniably a part of queer history was still needed.

“Come on!” - The End and Beyond

The almost three years that passed between Stakes and “Come Along With Me” (September 2018) were much more tolerable than the Drought; after all, there was plenty of Bubbline content in the later seasons. The big question as the finale came was whether Adventure Time would fizzle out on its early pioneer of a wlw ship or follow through, once and for all. Almost four years after LoK ended and just before season 1 of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power dropped, Marcy and Bonnie had an emotional moment, kissed on screen, and ended the series together.

The intricacies of why a kiss was needed as a signifier of romance is a discussion for another day. But wouldn’t it have been strange after almost a decade of build-up for them not to seal the deal with a kiss? And to think it almost didn’t happen, as by that point it was so obvious they were together. Again, I direct your attention towards Paul Thomas’s book, he explains how it was storyboard artist Hanna K. Nyström’s call to add this final detail. Because, come on! Sometimes, you need to be as clear as possible, and that’s the case with queer representation in animation.

Since the finale, the comics have been continuing the Bubbline train - which are not technically canon but one can have fun regardless. In any case, the existence of Marcy and Bonnie’s relationship, of their queer identities, is not something that can reasonably be denied. It was a long road, and, make no mistake, an arduous one, but this is the story of a win. A win for storytelling and a win for wlw relationships.

We’ll Build Our Own Forever

So, there you have it, a Bubbline timeline of sorts. In March of 2011 we had the first on-screen interaction and now, in November of 2020, we’re getting a 45-minute-long special with the two of them as the central characters. They’re canonically in love, with King Princess covers of Bubbline songs and more. I tried to contain myself, for once, and not write too much. I think it’s important that people have a general idea of just how monumental all of this is and how, even just 9 years ago, “Obsidian” would have been totally inconceivable.

Some of this might have come as a surprise to you. It’s certainly not been easy to get to where we are now with Bubbline and it’s yet to be seen how open “Obsidian” will be about the relationship. I’ve been talking about Bubbline for years and attempted to chronicle their relationship many times so I’m happy I’ve finally done it from this perspective as well.

Hey, I've loved reading your long Bubbline rants, do you have anything to say about their interactions in Elements and Ketchup? (Also, Marceline's presence in Bonnibel Bubblegum). As of now, where do you think their relationship lies and where do you think it's headed? Do you think they'll become explicitly canon before the show ends?

Hi there! You don’t know how amazing it is to hear that :D Thank you, it’s always great to hear that my rants aren’t just nonsense to others. I’m going to rant again to show how grateful I am, just a quick note first.

The reason why it’s been a while since I posted a rant about Bubbline is that I started doing regular reviews for Adventure Time about a year ago, and so that became my “AT thoughts” outlet. Well, I actually began with retrospectives and I’ve been doing reviews for new episodes since Season 8 premiered. I try to contain myself at least a little bit with these, although my inner shipper still shines through when talking about stuff like The ShirtTM, because who can resist that. I did write about “Elements” and “Ketchup” there, but I’m so glad you asked this because this way I can rant just about the Bubbline aspect.

It’s also a really convenient timing as I’ve been wanting to write about Bubbline, based on discussions I’ve had with friends and other ideas. Some of those might still happen, but at least this gives me an opportunity to voice some of what I’ve been thinking about.

Indeed, I do have a lot to say about their most recent episodes. First of all, can I just point it out that literally all of Marceline’s appearances since the beginning of Season 7 featured Bubblegum as well? Whether they are both main characters like in “Varmints” or “Broke His Crown”, minor ones like in “The Music Hole” or even cameos like “President Porpoise is Missing!” and “Wheels”. The only exception since “Varmints” is “Everything Stays”, where Marcy only mentioned PB, or I guess you could be really critical and say that “Ketchup” doesn’t count. But nitpicking aside, these last three seasons seem to have an agenda.

Not that I don’t see how the lack of Marceline as an individual character has been alarming but from my perspective, the last seasons are clearly going somewhere. I declared after “Stakes” that it’s basically canon and that feeling only grew stronger after “Broke His Crown”, but with that also came a worry that this might be it. After all these years of waiting for the creators to do something, I, along with many others, was worried that “blatantly obvious for those who want to see it but not quite explicitly stated” is the best we’ll get. How do I feel about this following Season 8? Well…

“Elements” wasn’t exactly about Bubbline itself of course, but it contained plenty of small moments that serves as further “proof” for those wanting Bubbline to become canon - and make no mistake, I’m a proud member of that group, but it still wasn’t actual proof, was it? We had Marshmeline staying loyal PB and being constantly by her side, her humming “Greensleeves” and even wearing the famous “What Was Missing” outfit. Uncivilized Elk did a wonderful analysis on what the use of “Greensleeves” might mean, and though I don’t necessarily agree with all of it, I definitely think that the choice of song is intentional and further develops the Bubbline relationship, even if only in a subtle way.

“Ketchup” is much more interesting in that it details what happened before “Elements”, in its own whimsical way. When reviewing the episode I mentioned how Marceline’s story could be interpreted in many ways, but an obvious choice is to take what she said with a grain of salt and apply it to how PB transformed into the pure candy elemental. I absolutely adore this episode and how it lets Marcy process her thoughts and feelings, I love how much she’s grown and how her relationship with PB– sorry, Lollipop Girl is portrayed. What we see is that Marcy fought against the elemental spell and tried to snap Bubblegum out of it (might or might not have even confronted Patience about it) but ultimately gave in so she could be by Bonnie’s side as the spell washed over Ooo.

What’s great about this is not just the very heavy implication that Marceline cares this deeply about PB. Well, that’s great, but it’s mostly just amazing to see how far she’s come since “I’m Just Your Problem”. She still has her own way of coping with things and some stuff is still too hard to talk about (like her mother at the end of the episode), but she’s trying. She admits how much this affected her and she admits how much she cares about Bonnie. This might not seem like a big deal now, but think back to Season 3 Marcy. Even though Bubblegum is strictly speaking not even in the episode, “Ketchup” is yet another milestone for these two.

I didn’t know how to incorporate my thoughts on Marcy into the “Bonnibel Bubblegum” review so here we go. It’s a shame she didn’t have any lines but that was most likely down to real life voice acting reasons, maybe they didn’t feel like dragging Olivia Olson into the studio for two lines. But even without saying anything Marcy’s presence is significant for the same reason that “Ketchup” was: it shows us how far our characters have come. The episode is clearly about the eponymous character and her past, but the scenes set in the present tell us that Finn, Jake, PB and Marcy (along with BMO, sometimes) just hang out as casual friends. Again, think back to “What Was Missing” and how they were almost forced to hang out together.

That being said, I have another thought regarding this most recent episode and the end of the show in general, which leads us into the last section of this answer. Where the Bubbline relationship lies right now and where it’s headed, hmm. Where it lies now, if you ask me, is in limbo. Throughout Season 7 we saw them talk through their problems, become close friends again and ever since then it’s been a ship tease and subtext paradise. I guess if you’re reading this I don’t have to explain how almost every one of their interactions could be interpreted as a couple, so just take that for granted. The subtext is there, hell, it’s this close to being actual text. But it’s not actual text, is it? And that’s annoying me more and more as each episode passes.

Look, Adventure Time only has 12 episodes left until the end. Around two hours worth of TV is all we’re going to get, and I would love to trust the creators but I’m growing anxious. There are a few characters arcs and storylines that need resolving and Bubbline is one of them. With episodes like “Marcy & Hunson” plus the inevitable battle of wits between Bonnie and Uncle Gumbald coming up I’m not really afraid of them not getting well-deserved conclusions as individual characters. Wouldn’t it be a damn shame though not to have a final scene between just the two of them though? And I’m not talking Korrasami level last scene, neither of them is the protagonist so I get that they are not the main focus of the show. But for all this build up to go nowhere, to stay in this limbo of just enough to see that there’s something but not quite there yet, now that would be a narrative nightmare.

I couldn’t hide the fact that I ship them even if I wanted to, so I’m saying this as a proud fan but also as someone who tries to view it all objectively: Bubbline has to happen at this point. Where do I think it’s headed? Well, it’s headed towards them being a couple, it’s been heading there for years now. From a narrative point of view, it makes perfect sense (this is one of the posts I’ve been wanting to write but haven’t had the time yet). It wouldn’t just be fanservice or giving into the pressure of representation - if anything, this would still be viewed as a move against societal expectations. I’ve talked about why it would mean a lot for Bubbline in particular to become canon, but it’s not just about the LGBT+ aspect of it. Every scene shared between these two have been heading towards a moment where they finally admit their love for each other.

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful when I say all that we’ve had so far is not enough. If anything, all that’s happened since “Varmints” was unimaginable for me back when I started watching Adventure Time five years ago and the only major episode Bubbline had was “What Was Missing”. Even after “Sky Witch” I wondered if they were ever going to go anywhere with this great relationship. But they did, we’ve already seen such beautiful scenes between the two and by no means am I trying to undermine the importance of their friendship. The way these two found each other again after what was clearly a bad falling out is amazing. They mean the world to one another and no matter what happens, that’s canon. Bonnie and Marcy canonically care so much about each other that they are willing to face their own personal demons to keep the other safe.

So I do appreciate what we have right now and honestly if it wasn’t for the blatant “sub”text and the many signs, I would be happy with a Bubbline friendship. I would still ship it romantically, but if I didn’t see signs that the creators want to go for it I would be able to accept that. As I keep saying though, it’s too much at this point for it to go nowhere. I think they have to become explicitly canon before the end, in a way. If they don’t, all of this was for- well, not nothing, but for an underwhelming conclusion.

I’ve been thinking about this lately: what would I do if AT ended without Bubbline becoming canon? Would it affect the way I view the end of the series as a whole? Probably. And maybe this is more the shipper side of me speaking, but I don’t think I would be satisfied with the way they wrap things up if Bubbline doesn’t happen. Even if it does there are still ways in which the finale could be unsatisfactory, but at this point, Bubbline has also become a major factor. 

Because of all of this I really, genuinely hope that Bubbline does become canon by the end. I have faith in the creators and I don’t think they would queerbait knowingly. Would I say I’m sure it will happen, though? Not really. Again, 12 episodes left and so much to resolve, but the best we can do for now is appreciate what we have and keep on hoping. Hey, I never could have imagined Korrasami would truly happen, despite wanting it so bad and seeing the subtext, but maybe it’s safe to start expecting stuff like this.
