Summary: No one trusts Crockett. (Little Sparrow 2/2)

Ethan carries Crockett into the ED. Just driving him was faster than waiting for an ambulance, and he’s heavy but peaceful. Peaceful, but dead to the world. He reeks of bourbon, probably from the empty bottle Ethan had to pry out of his hand, and he has no idea what else he took because his pulse is weak, thready, and there was a whole pharmacy in his medicine cabinet. How did no one notice this? It’s clearly not a new problem.

“Maggie,” he calls. She directs him to a room to set Crockett in, because at this moment he’s Crockett and not Dr. Marcel. And his heartbeat is so slow, so weak. His breathing shallow. Ethan wants to run a tox screen, but first he needs to find out if Crockett’s about to die. He’s dealt with so many overdoses, but they’ve never been someone he knows personally, he sees so regularly, he cares about more than he’d like to admit.

Crockett’s hooked up to the monitors, and Ethan has to think, think. Anything Crockett took, it was orally. Pills and liquor. They’re going to need to pump his stomach, get an IV into him. His breathing, Ethan needs to check on his breathing. There’s so much to do and he can’t figure out where to start. He’s overwhelmed and now he can’t breathe either because Crockett is here, out cold, sick. He overdosed.

The worst thing Ethan can think of is that this was on purpose. All day, people have been trying to get ahold of him- Ethan included- with no luck until he literally broke down his door out of this exact fear. That Crockett hurt himself.

Thank God for nurses, he decides, who put Crockett on the monitors and get a needle into his arm. Two way port, to draw or give. They’re calmer than him now. He forces himself to take a deep breath and pulls up his tablet to jot down what they’re doing.

“Run a tox screen,” he says. “I want his BAC and to find out what was in his system. He had a lot of pills in his apartment.”

“You brought him in?” Monique asks. She’s already drawing Crockett’s blood, red and thick.

Ethan nods. “He wasn’t answering his phone, I was worried. He took a lot of something.”

It’s hard to forget everything Ethan saw in that apartment. The bathroom was full of pills. Some prescribed to him from definitely not-current dates. There were two sandwich baggies of loose pills. And there was the empty bottle of liquor in the living room, the second one in Crockett’s arms. Pumping his stomach will probably help. Ethan throws in that order too, but before any real progress is made, Crockett’s eyes open slowly. Blink shut again.

“Crockett,” Ethan says, a little more desperately than he means to. He pulls out his pen light. “Crockett, can you hear me? Open your eyes if you can hear me.”

They open just a little, just enough for them to squint shut again when Ethan shines the light into them.

“C’mon, Crockett, open your eyes. Let me see you.”

This time, he doesn’t respond, and Ethan has to pull his eyes open to check for response. His pupils are dilated, but they do contract a little with the light, which is a good sign. He needs to take a deep breath.

“Is he conscious?”

Ethan taps his palm lightly against Crockett’s cheek a couple times. Nothing. “Not anymore. We just had him for a moment. Can you get me a mask for him? I don’t like the looks of his blood oxygen.”

She gives him one, and as she hooks it up to an oxygen tank, Ethan slips his hand underneath Crockett’s head and lifts it ever so gently to fix the mask properly. Crockett’s got a shadow along his jaw, sharp and prickly, that scratches Ethan’s hand. His skin is hot to the touch.

“When you get a chance, hang some saline? He’s probably dehydrated.” Ethan doesn’t know why he’s still touching Crockett’s face. “I’m going to check in on my other patients. Let me know when his labs come back.”

He checks in on his other patients, but he can’t stop thinking about Crockett, glancing back at him and the way he lays there, so still. So quiet. In life, he’s always moving. Usually talking. But now he’s empty, and Ethan’s got a sinking feeling that Crockett isn’t going to wake back up from this. Not fully. His heartbeat is stronger, his stats improving, but he hasn’t made a movement since his eyes were briefly open. Ethan watches him during his loops and, in a moment of downtime, pulls a seat up at Crockett’s bedside and just watches him. Holds the hand not burdened with an IV. Watches his chest shudder up and down. He’s not dead, but he feels dead.

“What are you doing to yourself, Marcel?” he whispers.

Crockett doesn’t so much as twitch.

Ethan reaches up to push Crockett’s hair out of his face. It’s greasy, unwashed. Crockett wasn’t taking care of himself, was hurting himself. The lights are on but no one’s home, and Ethan wonders again what this means for Crockett. He may die. He could die, and Ethan doesn’t know what to do with that information. It doesn’t sink in. He can’t process the idea of sitting here and watching Crockett’s body give up on him. If only he would just wake up.

As soon as he thinks of that, like there’s a higher power listening, Crockett’s eyes open and he starts fumbling at his oxygen mask.

“Hey, it’s okay-”

He tries to still Crockett’s hands, but Crockett doesn’t calm down. It isn’t long before Ethan figures out why. The oxygen mask still on, he throws up, and then Ethan is the one pulling it off of him so he doesn’t choke. In movies, in media, drug abuse and overdose are pretty and they’re peaceful. Drifting away without pain. Sometimes accidental, sometimes intentionally. This is not poetic art, but something nasty and twisted and painful.

“Okay, okay,” Ethan says, rubbing Crockett’s back as he coughs weekly. “You’re okay. I’ll get you some clean sheets and a new gown, you’re okay.”

He meets Crockett’s eyes and it’s heartbreaking. He’s crying, and struggling to breathe again, and covered in his own vomit. There’s so much to be said, none of which makes it out of Ethan’s mouth because this just hurts. He’s never in his life seen someone so broken down. He does the only thing he can think of, and pulls back to force himself into the role of a doctor again. It’s easier to be a doctor.

“Can you tell me what it is you took?”

His voice is so stiff. It’s barely his own, and the way Crockett looks at him makes him feel like a monster, so much so that he can’t manage eye contact. Instead, he stares down at his tablet with the account of what they’ve already done, what they already know.

“You know you could have died.”

“Yeah,” Crockett croaks, and lets his head fall back hard against the pillow. He’s in bad shape. “I’m gonna sleep a little longer.”

Ethan starts to tell him no, but it’s too late. Crockett’s asleep again, and Ethan would rub his eyes but he still has Crockett’s vomit on his hands. He steps over to the sink and washes them for longer than necessary, trying to do something useful that doesn’t make him hate himself.

Just his luck, Curry is on her way by. Cleaning up that mess is a med student’s job. Even if it wasn’t, Ethan just can’t look at Crockett anymore right now. “Grab Doris for help and clean up the patient in six. He threw up on himself and passed out.”

He can’t bring himself to tell her who’s in there. She’ll know, though, once she sees. Everyone will see that Crockett was falling apart in front of them, and not a single person noticed just how badly he was doing. It took this to see his pain.

Ethan busies himself until Crockett wakes up again, now in a clean gown and not trying to take off his oxygen mask so he can throw up. It’s a good time to check in on him again, decide if he should put up another bag of saline. He does, however, bring a cup of water with a straw because Crockett’s mouth must be so dry.

When he approaches again, the cup held out like a peace offering. Crockett takes it in a shaky hand and maneuvers the straw under his mask while he drinks it fast. It’s empty almost immediately. Ethan takes it away and he doesn’t have the words for a situation like this. No one does. There’s no way to explain how he’s feeling right now or how sorry he is for not realizing this sooner.

“When he has the chance, Dr. Charles is going to stop by,” Ethan says.

Crockett rolls his eyes. It’s a good sign, that he’s feeling alright enough to be an asshole. But it doesn’t negate what just happened, and so Ethan does a quick check-in to make sure he’s alright. Temperature is a little elevated, but nothing to be concerned about. His eyes can track movement, and his pupils are responsive to light. He can move all his fingers and toes. He doesn’t say a word to Ethan, just follows instructions, until the quick exam is over. Then, softly, he asks:

“Will you turn off the light when you go?”

Of course Ethan does, and he draws the curtains too. Out of sight, but not out of mind. For the rest of the shift, even after Dr. Charles’ evaluation and a visit from Lanik and Goodwin and Ethan forcing himself to stay away, he wonders if this was on purpose. He wonders what happens next if it was.

ok ! so im not gonna talk too much abt family stuff bc yuno and i are doing the collab of the century here and art takes time people ! JSBDJBWDJW but so u get a good idea...i will write a little abt it lets get it

so the kwons were two of the biggest faces in hollywood ( and tbh they are still considered icons / hollywood royalty no matter how old they get they stay #Relevant ) think bradgelina ! literally everyone knows who the kwons if u dont u probably live under a rock /:

their parents are very into the fame thing...so when it came to their kids ( nari and wolfe ) they SUPER pushed the famous life onto them, really expecting both of them to be just as obsessed and enamored by the public. idk if u guys ever say that vid of gigi and bella hadid before they were huge were their mom was pressuring them both to get into modeling and to stay skinny and to be stars etc....it was kinda like that !

so narissa, being the first born, really just internalized that shit...like imagine being told ever since u were a baby that fame and status and ur last name are wildly important and not being able to remember a time when u werent being watched by cameras / a third party ( the public ) bc that was her life ! nari has....no experience as to what life is like without cameras and without having to create this image of herself that ppl are gonna be into

obviously that’s NOT normal....and it had it’s toll on her /: as a kid she grew up so fast like u know those kids that seem so mature and wise for their age ? that was nari. she always had two versions of herself: inside nari vs outside nari. she was so good at being good just bc she knew what stuff to express and what stuff to keep inside ( spoiler alert: most of it was kept in x )

she is still very much desperate to please her parents despite it all /: i feel like for a long time she kinda excepted and agreed that fame is everything ( hence why shes known for using her last name to get her places ) but shes starting to realize just how FUCKED it all is and just how much it’s messed her up so stay tuned for more fun !

ok so career stuff ! nari started off as a child model bc she was um super cute and super good at knowing what to do / not freaking out in front of cameras <3 but she was always obsessed with actors ! she used to sit in front of the tv for hours legit study and memorize ppls mannerisms and various movie lines.. she was literally always just quoting random lines / imitating various actors so often her parents were like ok word go act !

she landed her first role at 12 and it was a pretty huge role as a lead chara in a mini television series that revolved around a cast of kids ( think stranger things but not plot wise just how some of the mains were kids ) with zero acting experience before hand ... so it was pretty clear to the media nari got the spot bc she was a kwon ! there was a bunch of controversy around the show before it came out but once it was released...there was no denying nari had talent

after that it was just a whirlwind of acting doors opening up for her. everyone wanted nari bc of her last name and all the attention that came from it, not to mention every director wanted to be The One that helped narissa kwon become one of the most famous actresses of the 21st century. most of the time she was getting cast for selfish reasons but nari never realized it /: she was just happy to be acting bc it really was like therapy for her to become different ppl

flash forward to age 15 when narissa was finally diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and was prescribed meds to help ! it was actually a director from a movie she was working on that suggested to her parents nari might be struggling after witnessing her have a panic attack on set. not wanting a scandal, her parents agreed it was best to get her “help” which included pills and weekly therapy !

so nari actually didnt mind it too much tbh she HAD been struggling for a while she just assumed her anxiety was normal and just like something all famous ppl were dealing with but that wasnt the case. she was hesitant to open up to her therapist just bc she was still obsessed with this idea of inside nari vs outside nari, and she was very scared to cross that line so it took....years of sessions to build up that trust

as she got older though and as she got more famous, everyone just assumed she was better. she was more famous and loved by the day, she had become a chanel ambassador ( thank u jennie x ), her interviews on youtube always brought in record views, she’d started in plenty of movies critics agreed would become cult classics, her social medias were nearing kardashian level in terms of followers: everything was on track....

....except nari had actually never been more unstable. she had become so dependent on her meds she couldnt go anywhere or talk to anyone without popping a few in. all the watching eyes were starting to make her paranoid, not to mention the pressure from her parents ( who couldn’t be happier with nari being so famous ) was at its all time high. she had been nominated for an oscar at 21 and everyone was expecting her to win...and then she didnt

narissa kwon famously fainted at the 2018 oscars after it was announced she had lost the award. her actual fainting wasnt caught on camera or televised, but it WAS witnessed by some of the most relevant names and faces in hollywood who were in that room. the scandal took the media by storm, the hashtag #getwellnarissa trending for over 42 hours until a statement was released she had fainted bc of dehydration and other undisclosed causes and that she was okay & currently taking it easy at home surrounded by family

in reality it was the abuse of her medication as well as all the stress, but when your last name is kwon manipulating the press is as simple as making the right phone call. unfortunately for nari and her parents, the article about the brat pack came out a week later, and there was no manipulating that source /:

for narissa, it was all a wake up call. she decided to go off her anxiety meds altogether. after falling out with the brat pack she spent that year trying to figure out who she was separate from her fame and her last name. despite some offers from a few casting directors ( surprisingly some people still wanted her despite the scandals bc she was still a kwon, after all ) narissa rejected every role except one in a coming of age indie movie that explores womanhood and mental health as well as strained relationships with mothers. the movie is set to release sometime mid august hehe (~:

she agreed to come to milan to reunite with the brat pack bc she’s still searching for herself ! nari figures the people who quite literally grew up with her might give her some answers......not to mention there is still a part of her who is desperate to reclaim the image and status she had before everything fell apart </3

PERSONALITY/TIDBITS

narissa is....complicated to say the least. growing up in front of the cameras and in a family who prioritized fame and outside opinions of you as the most important thing, she is quite literally desperate for praise and approval. because she legit has no idea what parts of her are real and what parts of her she’s created for her public persona, she often looks for understanding in others!! shes very very good at analyzing people and understanding people in the hopes that its gonna make her better at analyzing herself, but to no avail.

libra sun capricorn moon !! THIS is super accurate and telling if u wanna read but i kinda just summarized it in the last bullet

she is such a perfectionist with everything she does and a bit of a control freak in the sense that if she’s not the one doing something, she doesnt have faith whatever that is will be able to live up to her unrealistic standards. directors are often concerted with nari bc whenever she gets big roles.....she is so hard on herself, often asking for take after take bc she monitors every little thing abt her expression or her movements. she’s often left frustrated and disappointed with herself bc again, her standards are SUPER unrealistic ):

she’s relatively sweet!! growing up with the brat pack they probably knew her as the life of the party, very bubbly, confident, and very easy to have fun with as long as you’re being tolerable. however, she can get kind of opinionated at times so it’s very hard for you to gain her trust and respect back if you lose it. she’s also prone to random mood swings / periods of isolation, but whenever she returns its with a big smile and a soft voice assuring you everything is okay

very good at lying and deceiving ppl but she hardly ever does it on purpose ( unless her publicists asks her too ). she’s carried this persona / public image of herself curated for consumption from others for so long, sometimes she has no idea when she’s being sincere or if she’s just convincing herself she’s being sincere. most of the time she only deceives other people about herself. she can come across as kind of elusive because of this ( think daisy from gatsby’s perspective ) but it’s not on purpose. she just legit has no true sense of self isnt that sexy?

speaking of sex. JWDBJWBDJWBD she also uses that as a coping mechanism / a weird affirmation that yes, she IS wanted by others and yes she IS seen as someone beautiful and that she IS something to be consumed by others ( like i said in my tags....male fantasies male fantasies ) but then at the same time she feels guilty abt this and so unsatisfied and disgusted at how she’s living her life as an object / manifestation of other people’s projections rather than as a normal person...rip </3 its a cycle

ever since her relationship with micah that was so hated by the public it actually ruined and ended their relationship, nari has been too scared to publicly have a relationship again. the media seems to love seeing her on casual dates with other stars, but not to see her tied down to one person, as that kind of “damages” this super accessible persona she’s put out ( think idols and why they cant date )

she loves poetry, french music, all of marilyn monroe and audrey hepburn’s movies, nonfiction essays abt womanhood and identity, anything chanel, is particularly fond of silk dresses but is partial to velvet as well, wears lacy bralettes under everything bc it makes her a little more confident, actually prefers large parties to small ones because small gatherings are more personal therefore give her more anxiety, would only eat fruit and drink champagne if she could live like that, doesn’t know how to swim so she’s scared of the ocean as well as the dark, used to study ballet as a kid and misses it terribly, doesn’t know how to drive and isn’t planning to learn, can be materialistic at times, is probably an introvert masquerading as an extrovert for 22 years now, the only movies she cant stand are westerns, loves to travel but is scared of flying, doesn’t drink coffee, and is allergic to nuts.

last but most important fact about narissa is that she loves her brother wolfe more than anything in this world so messing with him is the only way nari is bound to 100% hate you. she can bully him all she wants ( ex. starting very real rumors he IS in fact a furry ) but no one else is aloud to actually be mean to him or she will kill you

also very random but i had a hc that when she was 6 and her pet cat jinx died she caused enough fuss at home her parents actually made it a national holiday in about thirteen different states. the anniversary of this death is december 4th and yes . the brat pack better mourn jinx with nari every year......

On the close #WorldMentalHealthDay I wanna say how proud I am of my friends going to therapy and taking care of themselves.

Also how jealous I am.

warning: this is a very long/extremely personal post. if you don’t wanna get into it, basically, I’m proud of you for going, I’m proud of you for trying, I’m jealous of your strength, of finding a good fit and sticking it out to do so. I wish us all the strength we need to ask for help (we’re not weak, but I know that it feels that way, especially when you’re deep in it), the resources to make it work, and the success of finding someone/something that works for you.

No? Then strap in because this went on tangents I wasn’t even planning on and I’ll admit I even got lost along the way. I think I picked it back up at the end but oof, it took a minute to get there and that transition isn’t good. Okay here we go:

I saw a therapist a few times during my senior year of college. My ex had started seeing one earlier. I had gone with him a couple times and he helped convince me that it was time. I had lost my mom two years earlier. I thought it would help and he said it would.

His guy wouldn't see me/didn't have time to? I don't remember what exactly the issue was. He gave me a number. I called her and we set up an initial meeting, with my ex's help. I never had the "strength" to ask for help by myself. He came with me the first couple times, just to the appointment itself-not into our meeting. I stopped asking him to go with me after a couple weeks. I was over him. I didn’t want to see him at all in my life and I hated associating him with therapy.

I didn't like my therapist. I didn't think she really understood me. I told her about feeling rejected when I didn’t get cast in the last musical of my college career. She basically said oh well. I told her about the stress I was feeling to get my requirements done. She said make a list. I had a list; I’d been checking off my degree audit since freshman year. I didn’t feel any connection. I stopped wanting to share and started feeling judged. I had always been anxious about seeing her to begin with. I stopped seeing her January before I graduated. I had to miss an appointment to go to the regional theatre festival. I never called to reschedule. It wasn’t a good fit.

I met a guy at the festival. We fell fast and hard. We both had issues. He had someone to see/talk to about it. I didn’t. I remember being jealous of having a doctor who prescribed anti-anxiety meds. I also remember him needing substances to assist the meds, or replace them when he couldn’t get his prescription refilled. I didn’t envy that. When I had had enough of being ignored, as he lived 3hrs away and I was the only one willing to make the drive, I started seeing other guys.

Or rather, I started getting really drunk at parties. The “cast party” of my only time stage managing included getting really drunk at the student conductor’s apartment and playing strip spin the bottle. Sorority parties would lead to making out with a sister’s formal date or going home with a guy I’d known since freshman year. I’d talk with them for a week or so before making up shit about not wanting to date an underclassman since I was graduating. Once I actually started dating one of them, after bonding over our parents passing away. I decided he was too good for me, especially after I had gone to visit the theatre guy one night and the next day had to drive straight from Charleston to a Chipotle date and almost ran out of gas getting there. But that was right before finals, so the timing worked for me.

Before graduating, I started rehearsing for my first post-grad show. It was community theatre near my house, my best friends were in charge, and I was just happy to get a production credit and work with my friends. A friend in the cast started making friends and I followed suit. About a month in I was dating one of the leads.We spent almost every day together. We also drank together almost every night, but we were young and didn’t think anything of it. I thought this was it. I had always wanted a showmance and I got it. We talked about our feelings, about his ADHD, how he went to therapy every week. I thought I found someone else I could really connect to. I shared how I’d struggled with my self-image all my life, how I’d tried therapy but didn’t like it, how I wanted to try again but didn’t know where to start. I thought he could help. I thought he could save me.

But three months in and a party with my high school friends tore us apart. I still don’t really know what happened that night but it threw my into a whole new depression. It didn’t help that we had just agreed on a new show to audition for together. And of course we were both cast. And he started dating another cast member. I tried not to care but I was hurt and jealous. And he kept reaching out. He said we could be friends and I was desperate for attention. When I couldn’t see him I acted out by sleeping with a friend.

He acted upset but never really cared. He told me I needed to see and talk someone to help myself move forward in life. Then he’d stop for a day or so before coming back, usually while drinking. And she found out, though it’s not like I tried to hide it (hey girl, how’s it going) cause I was selfish. When she’d had enough she called it quits. I thought maybe we could go back to before. He stopped coming around. My heart was broken all over because their relationship ending didn’t mean ours would start again.

I had gotten on tinder while I was fooling around with him. During that time. I had matched with and started talking to my now bf. I don’t think he was really looking for anything then. We’d go through slow periods where I’d doubt myself and my worth if he didn’t reply. Eventually my bf ended up ghosting me. My ex had given me the contact info for a new therapist. I’d call the number and hang up before I stopped ringing. I’d visit the website and see how much I could do without giving them my info. I was nervous to start again. I didn’t know if I could trust these people, after they guy who showed me to them had given up on me. I never did get into contact with them.

My bf came back into my life about 5 months later. But this time when we started talking we didn’t stop. We finally started dating. When I got moody, I tried to express how I felt and why. He did a good job of expressing his feelings and telling me how much he cared. I hadn’t experienced that in a while that I was feeling so good about us. During this time, my dad was dating someone. She and her two kids moved in over that summer. Shit got complicated. She and her kids destroyed my life. I leaned on my bf as much as I could, but we were long distance. My sister had just gotten engaged and she and her then fiance were doing some premarital counseling. She had had a lot of issues coming from my dad and his then fiance and it led to us all needing to go to a session.

During the one or two we attended, my sister tried to explain how we felt about our dad’s fiancee taking over. They’d ask me to chime in and I wouldn’t be able to speak for myself. I was scared. I was still living with my dad at the time and I couldn’t be honest about what I was feeling or experiencing. I was singled out during these sessions and asked about my mental health history and things I didn’t feel comfortable discussing with or in front of my family. I shut down. I was asked to find my own help or see someone else to discuss these things. And I couldn’t get the attention off me. At the time I felt picked on and judged. Like I did when I first talked to someone in college. I felt discouraged. I was scared.

Since then I’ve been kicked out of the house I grew up in, I’ve fought with my bf about the same topics I don’t even know how many times, and I’ve had a couple of the shittiest years to date, including things that I’m still not quite ready to discuss, even in anonymity on the internet. And through this all, and what I was eventually trying to make my way back to, I’ve known that I should probably be seeing someone. I have friends who are in therapy and I’m jealous. I want the relief that comes with sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone who’s job is to help you make sense of it all. But I’ve never found that. I don’t know what it’s like. I don’t know where to find it and I don’t know where to look. And now I’m off my dad’s insurance and couldn’t even afford it if I did.

I don’t know how to end this, except to again, praise those of you are seeking the help you need/want because good for you, you deserve it! We all do. If you’re not currently seeing a professional but you want to, I wish you nothing but success in finding someone you jive with because I know it’s not just a one and done situation. And to those of you like me who don’t know how to go from here, or how to reach out, or even what you want/need, I wish you clarity to figure it out and resources to try to make it work. I hope we all get what we need and deserve in the end.

ACL reconstruction

so. last week on Tuesday I got ACL surgery, and I've looked on a few tags on Tumblr for tips and what to expect. but, I didn't find a lot, and when I did they weren't really descriptive. so ima do one to maybe help some folks out. this is tips and my experience so far.

Edit: this turned out waaaay longer than I thought it would

THIS IS ALL BASED ON MY SURGERY AND RECOVERY. I'M NOT SAYING THIS IS EXACTLY HOW IT WILL GO. I WENT TO A TOP ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON BC MY FAMILY HAD HEARD A LOT ABOUT MY DUDE AND THEY TOOK MY INSURANCE(he turns out to be one of the top orthopedic surgeons in Texas. If you live in the Houston, Texas area, the dude is Dr. Barrett Brown at Fondren Orthopedic Group in the medical center. whoop.) :

if you have the time, money, and availability, go to therapy a few weeks before the surgery. it'll strengthen the muscles in the injured leg, and the leg that isn't going under the knife. it'll help you after the surgery when you're having to use crutches or a walker. trust me on that. I was going to therapy 7 1/2 before my surgery. my orthopedic said that I should've gone at least six weeks.

when I went to therapy for the first time after tearing my ACL and MCL back in October, he was concerned. *I was also in a wheelchair for ten days*.

don't do that

I wish I would've looked up how or asked a family who is a doctor how to use crutches. because I was miserable in that wheelchair. my muscles in my left leg(injured leg) shrinked because they weren't used in a week and a half. and my leg muscles are pretty strong for my height and weight. that was the most difficult part of therapy leading up to last Tuesday. the fact that my strength and body changed.

if you're learning how to use them, or they are unavailable for a day or so, go ahead and use a wheelchair. bc, I'll be honest, it is a lot easier.

You might be at the hospital for a while before they take you in. I was told to be at my surgeon's office at 9:30, and I wasn't taken back for prep until 13:00(1:00pm)

You might also be in the prep area for a bit.. but there is where you get the hospital dress, no-slide socks, a "fall risk" bracelet(which I should've gotten when I started to walk when I was little bc I'm hella clumsy), your IV, I was offered a numbing shot for the area of the IV but I dunno if that's universal

if you have a family member or friend back there with you, ask for them to distract you. I had my goofy brother to make faces at me

if you are offered that numbing shot, they will tell you this, but for about ten seconds it burns like hell

at my hospital, everyone who would be in the OR had to come introduce themselves before surgery, so if you have any questions, ask! they are there to answer your questions. no matter if you think they're stupid.

my Anesthesiologist(the dude who gives the knock out juice) came over, asked if this is my first surgery, and when I told him yes, he explained EVERYTHING. He said that all the folks in the room(for me it was 6) would come by, ask my name, birthday, what was happening during the surgery, and which leg. he then said that the anaesthesia I would get was a non-narcotic which is to help you not throw up after surgery(which I didn't).

five more people then introduced themselves

when they were wheeling me to the OR, they said it would be cold so they gave me a second blanket

they wheeled me up to the table, had me crawl onto it, had a foam pillow for my head, and extended arm holders for my arms to lay outta the way

Steve(anesthesiologist) then asked if I was ready, I said I was scared. one of the nurses then held my hand as he put in the knock out juice. he then said I did good, and to help the anaesthesia work faster, put an oxygen over my nose and mouth until I was out.(last thing I remember)

when I woke up, I was still in the OR, but I was incredibly dis-oriented. I know ASL, so I started signing "want brother" over and over. none of the OR folks knew what I was signing, so they found someone who knows a little ASL and they interpreted what i was signing

they told my that I had to wait for a little bit so they could check to make sure my vitals and wrap up my leg(it's a 30 minute waiting period)

when my parents came in, I was offered sprite(You can't eat anything after ten o'clock the night before, or drink anything(even water) after midnight.) because my sugar level was low

!!!start drinking water a week before the surgery!!!it's so much more difficult to find a good vein for the IV!!! my grandma was poked seven times in different places to find a good juicy vein!!!

the anaesthesia will most likely make you feel weird.

I called everyone cute. everyone. nurse, doctor, patient, people who I don't know. everyone. I asked my nurse out on a date. I told my mom who Is married she's jealous of my "mad flirting skills"

You need to eat something on your way home. I stopped and got soup to-go. I recommend soup, just because it is easy on the tummy

You will not have an appetite for at least a week. regardless, you need to eat protein during recovery bc it'll help your Incision.

I keep repeating this but. YOU NEED TO EAT. YOU WILL NOT FEEL LIKE IT. BUT EAT. I AM AN 18-YEAR OLD AND I GO TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE SO I STAYED HOME. I HAD THREE PEOPLE TELLING ME TO EAT. AND ONE WHO FORCED ME TO EAT. GET YOU SOMEONE THAT WILL MAKE YOU EAT WHEN YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE IT.

your leg will hurt. there's no way to sugar coat. it will hurt a lot.

find something to distract yourself. my Alma Mater was in the state championship for football, and I love football and star wars. I watched The Force Awakens an ungodly amount, that I could quote every. single. character.

just find things to do that you don't need to exert yourself too much. I like colouring books, reading, and watching movies. just have something to do while you recover. please.

you'll get prescribed four things: pain medicine, meds for muscle spasms, meds to help with nausea, and a shot that helps prevent blood clots in my leg while I can't move it regularly

I'm about six days into recovery, and the shots are the worst part currently.

The first three to four days are the worst of it. your nerves are waking up, you're getting used to not bending your knee, your learning how to walk again. they are just bad.

take the pain med when your pain level is a 3 or 4 on a 1-10 scale. it'll kick in right before it gets too bad

on that note. DON'T LET SOMEONE TELL YOU HOW BAD YOU HURT. YOUR BODY. YOUR PAIN. EVERYONE'S PAIN TOLERENCE IS DIFFERENT.

when you stand, it will hurt.

when you put pressure on it, it will hurt.

when you move it, it will hurt.

when you hit it(on anything), it will hurt.

when you have to adjust the brace strap that is riiiiight on top of the incision, it will hurt like no other.

that pain, will pass.

I PROMISE you that the pain will reduce. in the moment it may seem like your leg is on fire, but fight on, Strong Warrior. fight on.

elevate your leg from behind your ankle

elevate when ever you can. you're told to, and 10/10 recommend it because it will reduce swelling

you're gonna swell anyways. a little bit of swelling is normal. it's your body trying to heal it's self.

don't take Ibuprofen: it flushed out the good things that the swelling is bringing to heal your body

ice your knee. ice. ice. ice. it will help with over swelling

you don't HAVE to elevate your foot while you sleep though.

You will not sleep for a couple nights. it will suck. it will be frustrating. and it will awful. last night was the first night since Tuesday(it's a Monday) that I got more than four hours of sleep. You will eventually get sleep though. and personally, I was able to take small naps during the day.

I personally, have self-harm scars on my left thigh. so I was slightly uncomfortable with people being around them. You'll have to have someone wrap an ace bandage around your leg(mine is wrapped from my ankle to mid thigh.). Have someone you are comfortable with touching them wrap your leg.

You may not always be fully comfortable during recovery, but try to get as comfy as you can

Go to physical therapy.

it will help(and it's prescribed)

and for goodness sake. Do your at home exercises they give you. they seem like a waste of time, but they honestly do help.

find a PT group you like. **look on your insurance to find a place that is "in network". it'll cost a whole bunch less.**

for PT it's completely okay to go to different people until you feel comfortable. You will do so much better when you're with someone you trust and can tell they know their shit.

I'm curious by nature, and my therapist has the alphabet behind his name. so if you get a card, Google the letters!

for example, the alphabet behind his name is: PT, DPT, FAAOMPT. When I searched them, I found that PT is the good ol' fashioned Physical Therapist. DPT is Doctorate of Physical Therapy. and FAAOMPT is American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists("The “Fellow” is a physical therapist who has demonstrated advanced clinical, analytical, and hands-on skills in the treatment of musculoskeletal orthopedic disorders and is internationally recognized for their competence and expertise in the practice of manual physical therapy." Basically, my dude knows his shit).

Warning though, if you're curious about what a certain exercise does, and you ask,they might touch your body and physically show you what muscle the exercise works. and while you're doing an exersice, if you're doing it wrong, they will fix your position themself. this is why I say find someone your comfortable with. They are very hands on. I was lucky because the first one I went to, we hit it off. we both have mutual interests, and he isn't annoyed when I sass him. he sasses me back.

In pictures of me within a couple weeks of the operation, you can see how swollen my foot is. the brace I have is a pretty general brace, and it I locked straight. I cannot bend my leg while I have it on. under it is two ace bandages, and then on my incision there is a steri-strip. My nurse said not to touch it/try to remove it because it's keeping it clean and helping it heal. I got four holes in my knee for a camera and tools. the graph that is now my ACL is from my Patellar tendon, so the incision is between 6-8 inches.

Don’t want to find the original post, but the original poster’s name is in it if you want to go find them. Mostly didn’t want to go find it because if I tried I’d get sidetracked, and if I did that I’d A. not remember what I wanted to add and B. not get done what I need to do today. So, I have ADD, which is just ADHD without the constant bouncing off the walls. I do that sometimes, but not always. First of all, this post is spot on. Completely and totally accurate; I once hyperfocused so bad I didn’t eat for 3 days and barely heard when anyone tried to talk to me. Anyway, I wanted to add a note about prescription medication. The medicine for ADD and ADHD is, in my opinion, EXTREMELY helpful if you can get it (and it’s both very hard (financially) and ridiculously easy to do so but that’s a rant for another day). However, it’s not a magic wand that just makes me normal. So, let’s talk side-effects for every medicine I’ve ever been on. Keep in mind, I am just one person, and these side-effects are not necessarily typical--not everyone who’s been on these has had my same experiences.

Adderall: Ah, yes, Adderall. Every TV and movie perfectionist/studying college student’s best friend. In my personal and scientific opinion, I don’t think it actually does shit to help people whose brains aren’t a little f**ked up get anything done, but again, that’s a different rant. Adderall was the first medicine I was ever prescribed, and I had several problems. First of all, when you are first prescribed medicine, Adderall is usually what you’re given to start. And it’s a guessing game as to dosage. They start you off relatively low and see if you need more or less. Adderall really f**ked up my life at first, guys. Dropped, like, 80 lbs in 3-4 months. I looked like a skeleton. I have pictures from that time and it was scary. My eyes were sunken, I could see all my ribs, and I looked generally sick all the time. Why did this happen? My appetite when I took Adderall essentially disappeared. And I don’t just mean that I wasn’t hungry; I mean that the thought of eating made me feel sick to my stomach. I could not eat. Eventually, that calmed down, though, as my body and brain adjusted, and I settled into a healthy weight. Appetite was still stunted (as it was on all the medications I took), but I could eat and not feel sick. However, Adderall did cause the most stunted appetite of the five medications I’ve been on. I also experienced heart palpitations occasionally, but it was rare, which is probably why I noticed them so much. Another problem I had, I didn’t actually notice myself, but my sister sure did; it drove her crazy. Apparently, I had a tick: I would blink constantly. Just, every second, I would blink. She once counted how many times I blinked in a minute and it was 57 (for reference, people normally blink 15-20 times a minute). It didn’t really affect me, and I only occasionally noticed (usually only after my sister told me to knock it off), but it’s something to note.

Concerta: Not sure why I switched to Concerta. Could have been a dosing issue with Adderall; the longer you take a medication, obviously the more of a tolerance you build to it, hence why every once in a while you increase your dosage a little bit. My tolerance could have just gotten too high on Adderall and they switched me over to allow it to come back down (because it’ll do that if you’re off it for a while). I hated Concerta. In addition to the stunted appetite (still not as bad as Adderall), I got headaches, I could feel my heart just pounding every once in a while with no real reason for it (AKA palpitations, like with Adderall, but WAY more intense and tbh kinda terrifying), I had a lot of trouble sleeping, if I recall correctly, my hands shook a bunch; I did not have a good time on Concerta. I switched back to Adderall eventually and never looked back. Like, yes, it did its job and I focused and got my work done, but it was not worth it to me.

Some kind of patch: I don’t remember why I was on this one. I wasn’t on it for long; I didn’t like it. It didn’t do much for me. The idea was that the medication was in a patch that you stuck to your hip and it absorbed into your skin. I was on it for about a month; I did not like it. I didn’t feel like it was doing its job.

Ritalin: Okay, now we’re getting into the stuff I’m still on. Ritalin is good shit. It’s a short-acting version of all the other stuff (it lasts about 4-6 hours, whereas the rest of them last about 8-12). I use it when I’ve got a lot of homework and have to work/study late and my original medicine is wearing off before I can get it all done. Does stunt appetite a little, but not much (I’m also on a very low dose so there’s that). Bonus: doesn’t keep me up late if I take it late, whereas most of the others did (not sure about that patch. F**k that patch). It’s also WAY cheaper than the stuff I’m currently on, so I’m thinking it’ll be a good option for me to switch over to completely once I’m off my parents’ insurance. Gonna miss my current one like hell, though. God, I love this stuff.

And finally, Vyvanse: Vyvanse is kind of a derivative of Adderall. It’s made by the same company, and oh my God, I LOVE it. It’s been the best one by far. Least amount of appetite stunting, little-to-no sleep loss, no noticeable ticks or super intense palpitations (sometimes those happen, but these are all stimulants; my heart rate is elevated when I take them). This is the best one I’ve taken. I never want to give it up, and it saddens me that I’ll likely have to (shit’s expensive man. Worth it, imho, but expensive). HOWEVER, this isn’t perfect. I’m sure what I’m about to tell you would happen with all of the medications, but I don’t remember doing what I did on this one nor do I remember it happening on them (except Concerta. F**ck Concerta. F**k Concerta right in the ear). So, over the summer, I basically stopped taking my Vyvanse. I didn’t have a need to, and saving what pills I had left came in handy when I came out to school and had to deal with transferring my prescriptions to a new state (which delayed how quickly I could get a refill). So essentially, for 3 months, I was off the meds. I was and still am taking 50 mg capsules when I did that. It was my 3rd dose upgrade since starting it. Meaning, jumping right back into taking that high of a dose was a BAD idea. Here’s what I experienced when I started taking them again, as best I can describe it: Shaking--my hands shook a lot. Like, visibly. It would have been terrifying if I didn’t know what was happening (it was a super-intense version of what happens when you up your dosage) Vibrating--That’s all I can really do to describe what I was feeling; my whole body was vibrating. My body has never felt so foreign to me as it did when I made the stupid decision to jump right into 50 mg from a tolerance of essentially zero. I should have used Ritalin for a couple days to ease me into it. Jesus, it was so bad. Disconnected--my brain did not feel attached to my body. I felt barely aware of what was going on around me. I was hearing and seeing everything but I was processing very slowly or not at all. Everything was surreal. Palpitations like you wouldn’t believe--holy mother of Jesus I was feeling every single heartbeat. It wasn’t necessarily that I felt it beating fast (though it was going fast), just really, really hard. Zoning out--Like how normal people zone out but super intense in that I couldn’t snap out of it. It was almost an out-of-body experience. There were other things but I can’t remember a whole lot of what happened during those few days of readjustment. Although I guess you could count that as something, too: I don’t remember much of it. If anyone is on medication right now and has never just quit cold turkey and then jumped back in cold, don’t do it. If for whatever reason you stop taking your prescription, please, for the sake of all that is holy, ease yourself back into it when you start up again. Holy shit; I never want to do that again. And to think that before this I thought I might need a dose upgrade. HA.

DR. FEELGOOD

There's an opiod crisis in America. I read about it everyday. Thousands of people who take narcotics to get high. To blunt the pain of whatever is hurting them. Physically, emotionally, whatever. I don't even pretend to have any kind of solution.. I can only offer you an insiders perspective. My very first experience with the good stuff was right after I got married. I'd had a migraine for the third straight day.. I'd get them several times a year.. but this one wouldn't stop. My mom says enough is enough.. I'm taking you to urgent care. Kat had the kids.. otherwise she'd have driven.. she was concerned by now as well. Never had one last this long. At the urgent care.. the guy checks me out.. "are you allergic to anything?" "Are you ok with a couple of shots.. we'll get you feeling better" Not allergic.. hate shots.. but ok fine Demerol and Thorozine Nectar of the Gods I remember it to this day. Full disclosure time. I'm 24 now.. haven't yet run into the issues that are about to start soon. I dont really drink.. been drunk a handful of times. But I dont drink.. just never cared for it.. don't like the taste, don't like the feeling. I smoked some pot when I was 20-21 but I was always paranoid about getting busted.. plus now I have kids.. and you know what that means.. no money for pot. Tried cocaine a couple times. Kat and I would get a little for "date night". But we're talking birthday or anniversary stuff. So, pretty vanilla for a party guy. Just wasn't much of a chemical romance for me. My how things do change. Demerol and Thorozine No ecstasy so wonderful.. no bliss so complete. I went from being almost blind with pain.. to walking on a cloud.. I floated out the door to mom's station wagon. Such a pretty station wagon! My God.. look at that wood paneling! It sooo beautiful! I opened the door and folded myself in half to get in. Mom says "whatcha doing?" I don't wanna hurt the car by banging into it.. It's so tiny and beautiful... "I think you're covered.. put your feet on the floor.. put on your seatbelt please" Home again after the beautiful magic carpet ride full of neon and colors. In mom's beautiful woody station wagon. I floated thru door.. "Oh my, you look better" Kat laughs You are sooo. Pretty ! You know what would great ? Brownies! And sex!.. and sex brownies! And pizza.. we should have everybody over and BBQ. I'm going to lay down for few minutes, watch a movie.. but then sex brownies! Zzzzzzzz. 2 days later when I started coming around. I honestly have never felt that good in my life. 2 days of being completely pain free.. and floating on clouds. Never before.. certainly not since. The problem with being in chronic pain is this. It's chronic.. that means it NEVER stops. Some days arent too bad. You feel crappy... but honestly.. any person over 40 is familiar with feeling pain every single day. I just got a big headstart from everyone else. A lot of days.. far too many days. The pain is crippling. But most people like me have to figure out how to have a life despite that. So, on we soldier. I'm mid 30's... just really getting bad sick. My doctor is an Internist. The kind of general doctor that does innards. Dr. Feelgood was an amazingly good doctor. Everyone in town knew and loved him. Everything's going wrong all the time.. But Dr Feelgood is working overtime to fix it. I'm in serious pain.. everyday.. all day. But he gives me pain meds. Vicodin, Percocet, fiorinol, demerol, pills, patches, shots. We tried everything. I had access to sleeping pills, xanax, valium. Not all at once of course. But in hefty doses. I was dying.. and I just wanted it to be as pain free as possible. Dr. Feelgood was trying his best. There was a point in my life.. because of the years of taking so many narcotics.. I could take absolutely lethal doses without getting even a little buzz. I could get a migraine.. which at the time was common. Go into the office and get a shot of demerol.. and off to work I'd go. It got rid of the pain ok. But no more highs for poor Steve. The party is long over.. and I'm still always in agony. This was a big reason why I quit everything all at once. For the past 5 years Dr Feelgood has been banging his head against my wall. But we had the opportunity to move to another state.. I'd had my 2nd resection.. so this was as good as it was going to get. Off we go. For the next 3 years.. nothing. Some good days.. some bad.. but no drugs at all. But reality does tend to insert itself. The fact of my life is.. I Have to use narcotics most days..and there are millions of people like me. Used properly they are a miracle for us. Buy there are too many people who see how glamorous its is.. being a drug addict looks like one long party for Steve... lets try it! I do make it look glamorous. The problem today in 2017 is the government is seriously clamping down on legitimate prescriptions for legitimate patients. Every time my doctor prescribes narcotics. She gets a letter from uncle Sam. It tells her all the good drugs she's given out vs. How much other doctors have written. You never want to be on the naughty list. Dont stand out! That means they now have to ration out the good stuff. They can't have several patients getting narcotics. So those of us who have a legitimate reason to take them. Can't always get them. Most doctors practices will not even take you as a patient if you are on narcotics! Wont even talk to you about it. So here's my current nightmare. If I lose my current doctor.. I may not be able to get another.. ever. All because of the opioid epidemic It's happened already.. About 12 years ago.. after my 3rd bowel resection.. my GI. said we could try... Morphine. It's good for guts like yours. It helps with pain.. it causes constipation.. which can balance the scales with the diarrhea you always now have. Cuz of the fact that you have almost no intestines left. But there's rules.. you can only get so many per month. There will never be more. Don't ask. No other drugs from any other doctors. Ever. No drug seeking behavior. Ever. Dont feed it after midnight or get it wet. In 12 years I've never broken the rules. Not once. But I had started going to a pain management Doctor. She took over all prescriptions.. but same rules. Thats what they do. And again.. I followed the rules. But she was willing to up the doses over the years. And eventually I was getting some pretty good amounts. Now to be clear. I haven't gotten high from morphine since almost ever. It just helps the pain some.. keeps my guts pretty calm. But one day I get a form letter.. they're closing down the pain management aspect of their practice because of government pressures. Too much hassle. So I go back to my original GI who started me on it, to take it back over. But he just had to retire after serious back surgery. And his partner wont talk to me. RuhRow! What do I do Scooby doo? I was lucky enough to find someone for about a year.. she cut me way down.. but at least there was something. But this isn't really her specialty.. and she's getting the letters from uncle Sam. So.. fuck it.. I quit ! Cold turkey.. I planned it out so I could take off a month from work. Stocked up on ensure.. and T.P. Got ready for withdrawls. They were as horrible as you see on t.v. or movies. Basically it's like having the flu really bad for a couple weeks. After a month I was clean.. but my new nightmare was in full view. I am missing a large portion of my intestines after 3 bowel resections. It's called Short Bowel Syndrome. Everything that goes in.. goes right back out.. fast. No sight seeing along the way. If course the rapid pass through causes severe spasms and pain. I could no longer leave my bedroom. Not ever. I was on the toilet 10 times a day or more. And I barely ate at all. My new GI wasn't to happy about going the morphine route. I remember our appointment a couple months after I'd quit cold turkey. I wrote down my reasons why I wanted her to put me back on. I was bawling as I tried to convey how miserable I was.. I wanted my sad pathetic life back! I don't want to only be able to get out of bed so I could shit myself to death. I begged like dog. She agreed at a much lower dosage.. and of course.. all the same rules apply. Most days.. it's not even close to enough. But at least I can get out occasionally. Work a few hours a week. Play Pokemon Go with the grandkids and my beautiful wife. I get to have some little bit of a life. If anything happens to her.. or she just decides otherwise. My life will literally be over. My entire life is on the line. Every month. I go to pick up my refill prescription from her.. I think.. is this the month she cuts me off? I don't wanna die. I didn't do anything wrong. I don't have the answer to any of this. All I know is that there are thousands, maybe millions of people in this exact same boat. Narcotics are the only thing keeping them alive or letting them have some measure of relief from pain that you couldn't imagine in your worst dreams. Our governments solution right now is to take away all narcotics from everyone.. let God sort 'em out. Crack down on doctors who are trying to keep them alive. Cut funding for rehabilitation services and mental health. The 2 best tools to curb the opiod epidemic. These are just facts I'm sorry to say. I just don't understand how they can be so callous and cruel. I didn't do anything wrong. I don't deserve this.

Day 582 Without Answers

Imagine going to sleep every night knowing you have no idea how you are going to feel or act the next day. How much pain am I going to be in? Will I get another migraine due to the tension in my body? Will my emotional state be in disarray just by being alive?

Imagine waking up every morning and the first conscious recognition is the searing nerve pain pulsing through your hands, feet, arms and legs. You peel yourself out of bed, which is getting harder every time, and you stumble to find your medication in hopes that today will be one of the good days where it dulls the pain but not you entirely.

This has become my typical evening and morning routines yet still nothing about it seems normal or controllable. But I don’t want to start this journey on todays problems, but take you back to the beginning. The beginning of the 582 days when things started to fall apart.

It was November 2017, I was extremely busy at work which caused me stress and long work days but I didn’t mind, I was so young and in the beginnings of my newly found career I was willing to push through these long days to get my research done. I noticed that while working I would get these small, almost electrical, pulses through my hands and feet. Didn’t think much of it and pushed on thinking, “maybe it was my posture at work and my normally poor posture in my body.” In about one months time this progressed into my pinky and ring fingers now going numb. And in my profession there is nothing that can be accomplished without the use of your hands. I began getting worried but I just chalked it up to stress and overuse so I spoke with my boss and he tried thinking of things we could do to over come these problems. We had our ergonomics HR person come to evaluate my working posture and make adjustments, didn’t help and the numbness was now spreading further through my hands and the tingling sensations were becoming more intense. This set me off into an almost months long panic attack where all I could focus on were these failings of my body. My mind and body were both out of whack.

So I finally bit the bullet and went to my general practitioner about these issues. It’s not that I didn’t want to see the doctor but I was hoping we could resolve these issues with simple hacks. My GP prescribed me Gabapentin (neurotin) for what he described as a case of peripheral neuropathy, basically nerve death or damage in your peripheral nervous system, but didn’t really give me much else information on what could be going on. But hey I got some meds and maybe it would help! I started taking the medication the next morning, 100mg 3 times per day and let me tell you if you ever need to start this medication, do it on a Friday. Drowsiness is a side effect but the first two days on this medication feels like you have fucking narcolepsy. After the first two days I got my energy back and it was even better than before! The nerve pain was going down but still a dull presence in the background of everything I did and the numbness was less often.

And then the rain hit in January of 2018 and everything fell apart again. It was like the medication couldn’t keep up with the amount of pain I felt. I don’t know what caused what, or what were side effects of other sources of pain but I was now in about a level 8 on the pain scale pain with my neuropathy. It was ranging now from my fingertips to my elbows. My toes to my ankles. The base of my neck through my shoulders. It’s not like any other pain I’ve every experienced, its not like pulling a muscle or getting a cut. The best analogy I could come up with is that it’s like the burning feeling you get when someone gives you an indian burn. You know that thing we did as kids where you place your hands on someones arm and twist the skin in opposite directions? It’s like that but a constant burn throughout those areas I just described. The gabapentin wasn’t sufficient enough so my doctor bumped me up to 300mg 3 times a day. The pain was less but it was a toss up every single day of how bad the pain and numbness would be and it was driving me into a deep (what I now know) depression and anxiety filled state of mind. In January and February of 2018 I called out sick more days than I worked. I laid in bed in pain wondering if it would ever go away and berating myself for all the things I had done that could have caused this. Did I workout too hard for those years? Was my drug use in college what caused this? Am I making everything up and is all of this just in my head? I couldn’t escape these thoughts and I withdrew from a lot of things. From my personal life and friendships, from my work, from my family. Nothing made sense and if I started to talk about it I would just end up in a full blown psychosis of crying and babbling because I had no answers, only frustration with my body and my state of mind.

During this time I also started to notice small differences. I was getting small twitches, in my face usually my left eye and left upper lip. I would get these electrical shocks in my legs when I would lay down at night. I was having an uptick of my migraines (which I will discuss in a separate post cause holy shit I could write a horror novel on my migraines) and now daily constant ocular migraines. The pain in my neck and shoulders (which I now know is spasticity) caused me to purchase new pillows and a new bed to find relief. I had zero motivation to eat or cook and I dropped down to 122lbs, a weight I hadn't seen since my freshman year of high school and I hope to never see again. I was getting word salad (aphasia), placing words in the wrong order as they came out of my mouth or getting stuck on a word and not being able to get my body to say what I was trying to get out. My vision began blurring and I had to get glasses to read or be on the computer. There were so many things happening to my body that I had zero control over and my depression and anxiety had become too much to deal with on my own so they gave me a xanax prescription on top of gabapentin. But I hate the way xanax makes me feel and with my nature of loving drugs I felt like I needed to tread very lightly when taking benzo’s.

This was about the time I realized something was really wrong and I needed to find answers because my outlook on life had become very bleak and my will to make things better was lessening. We were coming up now on Spring and I needed to get my shit together. This is when my GP finally referred me to a neurologist. I do believe I should have been sent sooner, I didn’t actually even get in to see them until August 2018 because of our damn medical system, but I know my GP hasn’t dealt with something like this and so many people would look at me and think “Oh she’s a young healthy presenting adult I’m sure it’s just an emotional thing.” That’s when I learned what a silent disease is and how frustrating it can be. Everything I was experiencing was only viewable by me and I have never felt more scared or alone.

I finally got in to see a neurologist and their first tests were an EMG which studies your nerve conductivity in your body. They stuck needles in my arms and measured the nerves by pulsing them with electrode pads, wasn’t necessarily painful just uncomfortable. They diagnosed me with ulnar neuropathy and ulnar entrapment. Basically the major ulnar nerve that runs from my shoulder to my ring and pinky fingers was being damaged somewhere and that is why I was having so much nerve pain in my arms. They then sent me for my first MRI of my brain and C-spine (the neck portion of your spine) and that was the end of November 2018. Took a few weeks to get the results back and I was eager to see them. They were looking for tumors or lesions in these areas and I knew when my neurologist emailed me telling me she was referring me now to a neurologist who specialized in Multiple Sclerosis that there was something found. I met with the new doctor and she explained to me that they had found an old lesion in my brain that was of decent size. There's a difference between active and non active lesions, from my understanding an old lesions is a site of already de-myelination and an active lesion is a site where your body is actively attacking your myelin sheath and degrading it. So because mine was inactive we had no idea how long it’s been there. She told me it’s a good chance that I am developing MS but that it could also potentially be a lesion caused by something else. What else? Didn’t really elaborate on that.

So I finally started researching MS and I finally felt like I started getting some answers. All of my symptoms are indicative of MS but many other auto-immune diseases can mimic MS so we are currently in the process of ruling out those (things like lupus and types of arthritis) and getting MRI’s completed every six months to see if any new lesions begin forming. I still have very little help in managing the nerve pain, still taking gabapentin and began acupuncture and cupping treatments in Nov 2018 which helps a little.

All of my symptoms are still there and still progressing but until I have a diagnosis I cannot begin any other treatment options. My mental health has gotten somewhat better, I’m in therapy once a week with a psychologist who specializes in chronic illness which has helped me tremendously and I am on a slew of anxiety medications. But every day is still the same, I go to sleep every night wondering if I will make it out of bed the next morning, if I will be able to make it through the work day, and by the middle of every day I am most excited to go home and go back to bed. There are new symptoms and I will talk about those at another time (like jesus I thought fatigue was just about being tired but some days mine is like feeling every cell in your body running at 30% just enough to keep me breathing) but for now I just wanted to share what I have been going through for the last few years. If you are one of my friends or family members, I understand I have been distant and withdrawn from my relationships and for that I am sorry. I appreciate your love and support but it’s hard opening up about this when I have very little answers and a poor frame of mind most days, but thank you for continuing to love and support me through this.

My earliest memories were of living the American dream. I was the youngest child in a family of 4. We went to church on Sundays, my mother putting me in fancy dresses with ribbons and bows. We had a nice three bedroom house, with a backyard and a front yard, a swimming pool, a family dog, and a tree that I could climb. All we were missing was a white picket fence. My mother, a former school teacher, had quit her job to homeschool my brother and me. I remember hot summer days hanging out around the pool with popsicles and neighbour kids. All was well.

I remember the year I turned 5 as the year that everything changed. My mother convinced my dad to join a fundamentalist church where all of the families homeschooled. Large families with twelve children were the norm. I later learned that this pattern of large families amongst Christian homeschoolers was called the “Quiverfull movement.” My mother acquired some strong beliefs from this church, including a deep mistrust of doctors, and a belief that when the year 2000 arrived, it would bring the end of the world. I knew families that were selling their houses, convinced that the world was ending. My mother stockpiled canned goods and non-perishable foods. She instructed us to look for empty buildings where we could hide out until the rapture, and avoid government officials who would try to force us to take the mark of the beast.

Five was also the year that my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mother bought a salve from a man whose day job was to sell furniture. He pitched the salve as an old Indigenous remedy for various illnesses. She put it on topically over the lump on her breast, and it ate through her skin and brought pieces of the tumour to the surface where they would “sluff off.” It also meant that frequently after she took showers she would start bleeding out on the bathroom floor. When this happened it was the job of my brother and me to call my dad or family friends to come home and get the bleeding to stop. On occasional trips to the doctor’s office for checkups, the doctors were horrified. One prescribed her some intense pain medications including Vicodin and morphine. Her pain was bad enough that she said it never quite went away. Occasionally she would hallucinate and I remember her instructing my brother and me to do things that weren’t remotely based in reality. I would pretend to do them because if I didn’t, I would get in trouble.

I grew up taking care of her. I learned how to give her insulin shots, how to cook for her, how to watch the clock to remind her to take her meds. In return, she taught me that a woman’s place was in the home and that I shouldn’t go off to college. When people asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, all I was allowed to say was that I wanted to be a wife and a stay-at-home mother. When she was angry at me, she would hit me with wooden spoons or switches. When I cried, she showed me the hole that the salve had ate through her body to her tumour, tell me that she was hanging onto her life by a thread and that I was cutting that thread. She used rags to pack the open wound in her chest and put them in a bucket when they became saturated with blood and cancer and salve. It was my brother’s job to wash the rags. They smelled like death.

My mother kept books around the house like Michael and Debbie Pearl’s “To Train Up a Child” and our Pastor Reb Bradley’s 1995 book “Child Training Tips.” Early on, she would try to convince our neighbours to adopt the parenting methods advocated for in these books. Eventually, when it didn’t work, she increasingly forbade my brother and me from hanging out with the neighbour kids. These books were popular in our church Hope Chapel, our pastor having authored the second one. A related fad was adopting children from Africa. My mother admired the families who did this and told me that if she didn’t have cancer, she would want to adopt a child from Africa too. I remember one day at church, my mother called me over to introduce me to two little girls that a family had adopted from Africa: Zariah and Lydia Schatz. Occasionally, we would travel to seminars put on by Bill Gothard.

She was supposed to be homeschooling me, but in reality, she stopped teaching me anything and slept all day. My brother and I tiptoed around the house afraid to wake her. The walls of the house were lined with books. We had the entire series of 19th Century Horatio Alger and Horatio Alger Jr books, and the Elsie Dinsmore series, and the Laura Engels Wilder series. I also collected the Bobbsey Twins books. All of these being the types of books that kids grew up on around 100 years before me. There were also educational books. I taught myself how to tell time from a book, and taught myself algebra, checking my answers in the back of the book. One day she caught me doing the math, and I got in big trouble and she forbade me from doing it anymore. After a while, I took up math again and taught myself in secret.

Obviously, the world didn’t end in 2000, but the following year, one month before the terrorist attack on the twin towers and three months before my 13th birthday, my mother died. Her mother and sisters didn’t understand why I didn’t cry at her funeral. They didn’t understand that my mother had taught me not to cry. Or that as sad as I was that she had died, her death freed me from the abuse cult that had isolated me.

My father enrolled me in a small Christian high school, where we weren’t allowed to dance, and dating was discouraged. Many of the teens there were saving their first kiss for marriage. But for me, it was my first step into the world beyond fundamentalist Christian homeschoolers. I made friends with actual school kids. I didn’t talk much about my odd upbringing and tried to focus on learning how to fit in. By junior year, my love of reading had brought me to reading a host of philosophy books, and I began to question Christianity. Eventually, it ceased to make sense to me at all. I graduated high school a year ahead of my age peers, and unsure of what to do with myself I found a non-christian peer group to hang out with, where I could learn about public school kids, and meet other atheists.

In this friend group, I met my future husband when I was 16. We were married at 20, and I got pregnant at 21. He became abusive. One day when our son was 10 months old, he became angry and started punching things around the apartment. I told him that I had to leave until he calmed down. He physically blocked my exit and told me I couldn’t leave. I went to the table near a window and picked up a phone to call the police. He took the phone away from me, so I yelled for help out of the open window. He backed me up against a wall, put one hand around my throat and with the other he held the tip of a knife to my temple and told me I couldn’t leave. Just then my son woke up from a nap in the other room and began crying. He let me go so I could get him. As I was picking him up, a neighbour knocked on our door to see if everything was okay. My son’s father opened the door and said everything was fine. The neighbour insisted on talking to me. I went to the door, barefoot with the baby in my arms, and suggested I go over to her house to calm down. He let me go, and in my neighbour’s living room I told her what had happened. She went and got the keys from my son’s father, telling him I needed to take a drive to calm down. I drove to the police department, barefoot, and reported what had happened. A police officer went to the house and arrested him. He only spent three days in jail, which was enough for me to pack my bags and leave. The state issued a temporary protective order for him to stay away from us, and I followed that up with a restraining order and filed for and won sole custody with no parental rights to the father.

The following year I was accepted to a university in the UC system to complete an undergraduate degree. I moved with my not yet two-year-old by myself into family housing and managed to graduate with straight As in my major. I even studied abroad with my son when he was 3.5. My last year in college, I happened upon the website Homeschoolers Anonymous and realized that my brother and I weren’t alone in our experiences of child abuse while homeschooled. In fact, Lydia Schatz, the girl I had met in our church, had died of the sort of abusive parenting techniques advocated for in our church and homeschooling circles.

After graduating, I took some time off to work and figure out what I was going to do next. I met a single father who I have been dating for three years, and I am currently finishing up a master’s degree from one of the top 20 best graduate schools in the world for my major. My son is a sweet natured, happy and intelligent 8 year old who is doing well. I always wanted to find the words to tell my story somehow. Homeschoolers Anonymous Reaching Out recently went inactive and has been archived, so I thought I’d post my story here for now.

The Crusade.

BC. AC. Before child. After child.

From October 2, 2017 — onward, that is how the days will be categorized in the Dewey Decimal System of my life.

Countless people told me over the years how they don’t remember what their life was like before they had their child(ren).

Not me. I remember all of it.

BC = Jeans with zippers. Working out whenever I wanted. A social life. Sleeping. Dates with my sidekick.

AC = Leggings. Not working out for a year. Rarely seeing friends for quality time together. Dates? What are dates?

Maybe I vividly recall BC because I had my first child later in life than the average gal. I got pregnant & gave birth at 38 years old, so I have many memories of what life was like pre-baby.

As I chronicled in this blog during and after my pregnancy, I really just wanted to know that I’d be able to keep my daughter alive and safe. That was it. “You’ll figure it out, you just will.” And they were right.

I had girlfriends from all walks of life give me invaluable tips about the actual labor and what to expect. I thanked them profusely for giving me all the gory details and useful product hacks to care for my mangled body immediately following birth and onward for several weeks, and have even passed those insights onto other ladies over the last year who have a little one on the way. But no one, not a single person, talked to me about postpartum depression.

Which is shocking, because evidently lots of women suffer from postpartum depression. But most are never diagnosed, which is frightening to say the least. According to the CDC, nationally, about 1 in 9 women experience symptoms of postpartum depression.

There is some kind of unexplainable gag order on the subject. Are we embarrassed? Do we think we’re the only one going through it? Will people judge us who don’t get it? Whatever the unspoken rules are, it isn’t an openly discussed topic. Only when you proactively bring it up in conversation, will others confide that they survived PPD.

How often postpartum depression symptoms occur, how long they last, and how intense they feel can be different for each person. The symptoms of postpartum depression are similar to symptoms for good old fashioned depression, but may also include:

Crying more often than usual.

Feelings of anger.

Withdrawing from loved ones.

Feeling numb or disconnected from your baby.

Worrying that you will hurt the baby.

Feeling guilty about not being a good mom or doubting your ability to care for the baby.

After childbirth, the levels of hormones (estrogen and progesterone) in a woman’s body plummet. This leads to chemical changes in her brain that may will trigger mood swings. In addition, many mothers are unable to get the rest they need to fully recover from giving birth. Constant sleep deprivation can lead to physical discomfort and exhaustion, which can contribute to the symptoms of postpartum depression.

Sleep deprivation. Bingo. I 1,000% attribute my PPD to lack of sleep. My daughter has never liked to sleep much, not from day 1. Breastfeeding around the clock + not sleeping are unequivocally responsible for the erosion of my wellbeing.

Never in a million years did I anticipate the troubles my husband and I would face. A “colicky” baby. The most helpless I have ever felt, is not being able to soothe my baby. A baby with several food allergies. A baby that would not sleep in any contraption, whatsoever. A baby who had to be physically rocked to sleep every single time. A baby who was chronically unhappy. A baby with reflux. A baby who didn’t eat enough and slowly slid down the weight ratio scale for her age. A baby who. A baby who. A baby who. The fill-in-the-blank baby list was endless, and the list suffocated me. On a few occasions, the things I thought about her and about myself during the darkest darkness, I cannot yet find the courage to type here. But, I promise when I write my book about the experience, I will tell the whole truth because I know I’m not alone.

I am a master preparer; I inherited that attribute from my father. Planning, road-mapping, tracking, the whole nine yards. I organized a binder for labor, birth and after birth, highlighted, underlined and marked up with copious notes what I learned from my Doula and the hospital classes months leading up to birth. But no where in there did it talk about PPD.

Not that anyone could have prepared me per se, but I never even saw it coming. For some reason, I convinced myself that I was fine, and would be fine. On a handful of occasions, maybe two or three times, ladies used PPD in conversation during my first six weeks as a Mother, and I immediately wrote it off. Maybe I was in denial. Maybe I truly didn’t think I had PPD, besides which, I had no context or experience. I figured all of my dark thoughts and feelings were “normal.” I figured crying, everyday, throughout the day, was par for the course. Being sleep deprived and having your world flipped upside down overnight would bring anyone to their knees…right?

At six weeks postpartum, exactly 1 day before my OB/GYN check-in appointment, I was accidentally diagnosed with PPD while being seen for a stye in my eye. The universe has a funny way of intervening. If it wasn’t for that one-eyed monster stye, I would have never gone into a medical office for assistance with mental help. I filled out a new patient intake form at the PCP, and evidently whatever questions I answered, was a blazing red flag for the doc. I’ll never forget the look in her eyes, or the sound of her soft, concerned voice when she said, “You have moderate to severe post partum depression.” She literally made me promize, multiple times, to talk to my OB/GYN doc about it the following day.

Zoloft only exacerbated my sleeplessness and caused insomnia — so the coveted minutes I actually could have slept, I didn’t...I moved onto Wellbutrin, a pharmaceutical alma mater of mine. You see, I had a bout of depression when I was 20-years-old in college. That drug saved my life. I try not to pop Advil every time my head hurts, but to say I’m an advocate of getting treatment for a chemical imbalance would be a massive understatement.

I have stayed on Wellbutrin, fluctuating the dosage up and down for many months since first being diagnosed. Then, the Universe intervened, yet again. I got another stye in my other eye when my daughter was about 10 months old, give or take, so back to the primary care physician’s office I went. And what did we talk about in the examination room? PPD. Of course we did. Ugh. She prescribed another medication for me to take on top of the Wellbutrin. I can’t exactly explain the scientific rationale, but it has something to do with a special concoction — the two meds work better together, I suppose like Jack Johnson beautifully sang? Eating only peanut butter on bread just isn’t the same sensation as when you add jelly to the sandwich.

Within a few weeks on the new PBJ duo prescription, I felt remarkably better. All of the sudden, I could cope. Things in the past that would seemingly debilitate me, I could now handle. And handle fairly well if I do say so myself.

My daughter is now 14-months-old; I’ve been taking a prescription for PPD since she was six weeks old. A part of my intellect is at peace with the current reality — at least I’m functioning, and dare I say it...happy. But at the same time, my ego is bruised. Am I artificially content? Is my happiness manufactured? What will happen if I stop taking the medication? Will I go back to the constant crying? Or am I past it and no longer need the chemical crutch? I’m too afraid to find out, yet.

So instead of having anxiety about having anxiety, I’ve been trying to focus on my self-proclaimed, Self-Care Crusade.

Ever since the doctor added jelly to my wellbeing sandwich, I’ve been knee-deep in activities that involve “doing me.” Individually, they’re pretty small, but collectively, they have rocked my world in the best way possible.

Every night before bed, I take a few minutes to roll out my back/spine. My chiropractor gave me those directions, and while I’m a compliant patient who always follows directions, I never realized how such a trivial task could quite literally lift the weight of the world off of my shoulders. Five minutes later, when I roll into bed, I feel 10 pounds lighter.

I started to read again. Sure, maybe I’ve only completed four chapters in a month, but it’s better than nothing. I’m convinced that, “Girl, Wash Your Face” was written for me. It’s about lies that we tell ourselves as women, and calling out our own bullshit. When the author was writing her pitch document to find a publisher, under target demographic, I am absolutely sure that it said: Mary Beth from Virginia.

I began to eat better around the middle of August. I’ll have to dedicate another blog post to this undertaking, but my God, fitting into JEANS…with a freaking ZIPPER, is glorious.

I joined a gym around my daughter’s 1st birthday in October, which is sort of like joining a church in my book. It’s a holy experience to reflect, meditate, and turn off the noise. To have solitude and lift weights and sweat. It is cathartic and an outlet for renewal. It took one whole year after becoming a Mom to feel like I could muster up the energy to purposefully move muscles. My daughter continued to keep me on my sleep-deprived toes for nearly 12 months. She graduated from sleep training school at 4 1/2 months old which was a massive success, but there were inevitably age-related sleep regressions, sicknesses, and Mercury Retrograde for all I know along the way, causing her to wake up every night and leaving me looking and feeling like a Mombie Zombie. After she finally hit her snoozing stride around her first birthday, the next challenge was getting my daughter acclimated to leaving her alone with complete strangers in the gym’s daycare; that endeavor took a few brutal weeks of separation anxiety adjustment on her end. But it worked. I finally earned an hour all to myself to focus on moi…three times a week.

I started saying daily affirmations, along with following a program called Aura Soma. In a nut shell, I take a few minutes, twice a day, while closing my eyes, and focus on my highest self. I could never adequately explain what Aura Soma is (otherwise I’d describe it as essential oils on steroids), so the company’s description will have to do: “Harnessing the vibrational powers of Mother Nature, Aura‑Soma is a system of colour, plant and crystal energies that enhance happiness and vitality. Created using the highest quality organic and biodynamic ingredients our products bring ease, balance and calm to your energetic system. While strengthening and protecting the aura they empower and elevate.” It makes me feel heavenly and has awakened a part of my consciousness that has been dormant for, well, probably since forever.

While I do still very clearly remember my BC days, my early AC days are starting to fade…which I never, ever thought was possible. I thought the darkest, lowest moments of despair would always be engraved in the Temporal Lobe of my brain. So much so, it made me second guess if I could fathom having a second child, something I always envisioned. But it turns out that our minds have a way of protecting us over time. I suppose like when people who have been through horrific traumas, and their subconscious blocks out the memories entirely.

The manual swinging, and rocking, and willing my baby to sleep in a pitch black bathroom with no windows, while tears were drenching my cheeks and my lower back was in agony — all day long — I rarely, if ever, think of those days anymore. What’s more, on one or maybe two recent occasions, I had a case of baby fever, and it’s worth mentioning that I was conscious when those thoughts happened.

I am now finally on the other side of suffering, artificial happiness or not, all that matters is that I made it through. Today I’m truly enjoying my daughter, virtually every moment, of every day. She is hilarious, loving, smart and simply the best human I’ve ever known. I’m grateful that I’m finally at a point, and she’s at an age, where we can absolutely adore each other. I love her to pieces, and even miss her when she’s asleep {which is crazy since I’m with her all day long} — I’ve got a really serious, undiagnosed case of infatuation going on for baby girl. The stars are brighter than ever and I can see the constellation of my heart shining again.

Are there problems orbiting in my shiny world? Of course, too many to count. But all that matters is that I’m capable of coping with them, and crushing this crusade like a boss.

Should I accept this settlement offer from an insurance company?

I was in a car accident when a girl blew a red light and smashed into my side. $10,000 in auto damages that was fixed rights away. (btw she admitted fault to police so im 0% at fault legally) I went to emergency room for precautionary reasons. That cost $1450. Then little by little the pain started to kick in. I had neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain and terrible pain in my knee. I had MRI on back, knee and neck because those were the worst. That total was about $1800. I was told by the doctor that the mri on my back said I have two herniated disks and I should do therapy. I listened to him and went four times per week for four months. The Mri on my neck came back good. But my knee showed a tear in mcl. I had surgery on that and had to see the surgeon in his office twice plus hospital bills which equals a bill of $14,500. I then needed 2 months of therapy on my knee. Also all the pain meds ive been taking through out the whole process is around $600. I had a ekg for my nerves to test if they were good and that cost $800. So after doing my research I find websites that say the settlement amount s should be all bills multiplied by 3 depending on the persons insurance carrier and coverage. Well this person has $200,000/$200,000. So far all my bills have been paid through my insurance. When I do the math for what all the bills are is comes to roughly $28350. I didn't include the four days per week for therapy and seeing the doctors. That has to be a big chunk also. My lawyer called me and said he was made an offer of $42,000. He gets a 1/3 of that. I think they low balled me soooo bad on this. If i use the X3 multiplier method then it should have been somewhere around $85,000 offer. Remember I didn't even include all the visits to the therapy. Is this a good offer or should I decline and wait for second offer? My lawyer thinks we should wait it out because he has such a big insurance policy that we can get much more especially since that was our first offer.""

Last year I had Unitrin Direct....they were charging me $85 a month...this is with NO tickets or accidents for the last 5 years of my driving record....this is also with the BASIC insurance that you need in Florida...10/10/20...NO collision...and a $1000 deductible..... So at the end of my 6 months...it was time for a renewal...they tried to bump me up to $140 a month for no reason...still no accidents/tickets...nothing had changed...i had expected my rate to DECREASE....they tell me it's a STATEWIDE INCREASE ......so i called around... Ended up switching to Allstate who has been charging me $90 a month (better than $140 right?).....6 months go by, everything's cool.....now my policy renewal is coming up and they're trying to tell me i need to pay $160 a month for their basic insurance. Are you kidding me? And according to them it's another STATEWIDE INSURANCE INCREASE ...... They also told me that it could be due to not having CONSECUTIVE insurance for the last few years, as in...I switched from State Farm to Unitrin to Allstate......they told me call the state insurance commissioner...which I did....
