i like the bowlcut. its iconic.
if you see that hair, especially the season 4 shorter version, you can recognize the character immediately --"hey that's will byers!" in shots, fanart, silhouette, whatever. it's good character design and i think they should keep it til the end!

Masterpost of All S1-S2 Entires in Jackson’s Diary
Episode 57
[A crayon drawing of a green figure near a lake and surrounded by trees with red, blue, and yellow fireworks depicted in the sky]
At this point, Exer was scared of his own powers and how people were getting hurt because he wasn’t able to control the magic. So he ran to the hidden lake to get everything out of his system and it manifested into fireworks.
Episode 62
(no entry but Harry said something interesting, I will get back to it later)
Episode 63
[Briefly shown are a few scribbles in crayon 2 pages before the firework drawing. Seen are scribbles of black, blue, and orange, with a distinct green frowny face also on the page.]
Okay, so I don’t know what to write about… but I’ve been told to do it anyway, so here I go. My life hasn’t been easy lately, it’s been full of ups and downs… like a rollercoaster full of emotions. Where I made a lot of mistakes that I’m now paying for. Even though the past still hurts, it’s made me into the person I am today. And I think it’s time to move forward. To do that, maybe I have to try something new. I know I can’t change the past… I know I still have a lot to learn. But I’m still willing to do my best. I want to be responsible for my actions. I want to feel proud of who I really am. Maybe I just need to start forgiving myself… and start from zero.
Episode 66
[Briefly seen is yellow crayon scribbles and a blue star]
[dawn quite small on the side of the page is a black cat silhouette]
November 15th, 1989. Dear Diary, I’ve gone through a lot of changes in a short time this week. I think this is a huge step. I feel like I’m slowly getting back on track. I think it was good for me to explore different things. Maybe all of this was meant to be. Maybe this is a sign. Maybe I’ll fit in here.
Episode 69
Dear Diary, I think what I was told last week was true… I gotta try to look at the bright side of everything that happens to me… because at the end of the day, I have to deal with what life throws at me… I can’t hold on to all this negativity. Otherwise, it’ll just make me feel more frustrated… and I won’t grow the way I want to… I just want this storm to be over so the sun can come out. And I’m sure that when the sun smiles down on me… I’ll have a new meaning to my life…
Episode 71
Dear Diary, today my friends came up with a weird plan to help me. In the end, I was finally able to talk to the person I’ve wanted to talk to the most. It wasn’t what I expected but I’m happy. Because I was able to get a second chance.
Episode 76
Dear Diary… I’ve learned that it’s hard to change overnight. I’m thankful for all the support I’ve gotten from my friends… but I know there’s more work that needs to be done, for myself and everyone around me. I just have to trust myself to put things back together. One step at a time. And now, I think I’m ready to take a bigger step.
Episode 85
Dear Diary, I’ve recently closed an important chapter of my life… and it feels awesome. I still feel a bit conflicted… but I know this is how things should be. I know life is full of ups and downs… thankfully my friends are by my side. I know they care, and I feel their love. I’m strong enough to handle whatever comes my way.
Episode 87
[Left Page: depicted in crayon is a car exploding and something else colored in black that is not shown enough to be recognizable. Right Page: In the top left corner of the page is a yellow sun, and below it is a crying person with scribbles around the head to signify distress. Near the center of the page is a storm cloud with a few lightning bolts. Further down the page are two broken hearts drawn in red. Towards the top right of the page is another figure with a frown but not crying, also with blue distress scribbles near the head and a couple small green stars as well.]
(We do not know what Jackson actually wrote here, all we as readers got to know is the drawings)
Episode 89
Dear Diary… Harry isn’t reading you anymore and I don’t know how to feel about that. But if I don’t write, I’m going to explode. Maybe it’s a good thing I can mention names this time. I need to get things off my chest. I’m upset that no one understands how I’m truly feeling… and always leave me behind. Exer is still taking everything from me. He goes on with his life as if nothing’s happened. It makes me sick to my stomach. And right now, I wish he could feel as sick as I do. You know, get a taste of his own medicine.
Episode 91
Dear Diary… the pain usually goes away when I write. But only temporarily, it always comes back, and makes me feel worse. The guys always try to help when they can. Pam does too, even though she doesn’t know everything. They made me realize I acted too harshly by yelling at Harry. He really was just looking out for me. I even see him in my nightmares, and I don’t know how to feel about it…maybe he wasn’t just a therapist for me… maybe I’m mad at Exer because I’m just jealous he’s Harry’s son… I’m tired of making Exer feel this way… Maybe it’s time he feels exactly this way I feel…
Episode 92
Dear Diary, I don’t know why, I don’t know how… but when we kissed… I felt something wake up inside of me. It was more than just butterflies. It’s funny because I’m tired as hell. But it felt like I was protected… I felt I was in a safe place. Where no one and nothing can hurt me.
Episode 100
Dear Diary… I hope my tia makes empanadas after school today. It’s been a while since I had them. I’d love to try some with cheese and rice and… pfff …what the heck am I writing? This sounds so silly haha! But if I can predict the future, this should definitely work on her… so we gotta wait and see-
Episode 102
Dear Diary, my friends and I are gonna run into squirrels at the school entrance. They’ll jump on top of our heads…
Episode 107
[Left Page: depicted in crayon is a house in the top left corner, with a few green sparkles drawn around it and a cat next to the house also drawn with green crayon. In the top right of the page is a crescent moon. Below the moon in the bottom right is a figure drawn in green surrounded by trees and a heart in green as well above the figure. In the bottom left quadrant are two figures, one a girl drawn with lavender crayon, and the other a guy drawn with yellow crayon. Right Page: A car is drawn in red crayon at the top of the page. Below it are three green squiggles that look like they’re emanating from the landscape directly below it. Said landscape is a few trees to signify a forest, in front of some tall hills or mountains, drawn in orange. Below it is water drawn in blue. The placement likely signifies that the body of water is in the foreground, and the orange landscape is behind it in the background.]

It's such a breath of fresh air seeing art like yours. I've always loved the idea of, but never been able to figure out how to do something like your Vietwardian pieces myself until I saw your work. I love the blending of the two, and it's really inspiring watching you bring a culture into a place it's not seen in.
Aww thank you anon!
I’ve found that much of the historical fashion community is completely oblivious to how much of their aesthetics are borrowed from non-European cultures. They’re familiar with terms like cultural appropriation or Orientalism but are completely ignorant of how deeply ingrained these things are. Which is why I wanted to take a hammer to the whole thing and turn “historical” “accuracy” on its head. Historical fashion that only includes white, Western fashion can never be fully accurate anyway.
Design thoughts under the cut because I have a lot to say!
I felt it was important to do more than just swapping in Vietnamese textiles, because I don’t feel like our textiles are visually distinctive enough to immediately register as Not European. Not least because so many European gowns of the era used Asian textiles. Ahem.
I feel like this is where a lot of modern fashion houses lose me. The clothes are pretty or eyecatching or weird, but I don’t get any sense of who would wear them. And this is especially true when European designers coopt non-European influences. It’s blatantly superficial.
I put a lot of thought into the structure and silhouette of the clothes I’m trying to meld together. Structure being all the individual layers but also the lines of a garment—the shape of the seams, the placement and angle and curvature of darts, the behavior of the different materials. Because I understand the physics of the clothes and the balance of the silhouettes, as well as the way in which they’re worn, I can choose things that will look good together while maintaining the elements that make clothes instantly recognizable.
Then there’s the cultural and social aspect. I like to invent characters to get myself into the headspace of someone actually wearing these clothes. What do they need from their wardrobe? Are they going for conspicuous consumption? Are they someone at the pinnacle of high fashion? Or someone more practical, or someone concerned with modesty?
I wanted to approach the designs from the perspective of young Vietnamese members of high society with the sociopolitical clout to influence and establish fashion trends. They have no interest in abandoning their culture in favor of Western tastes, and they only adopt what suits their fancy.

so recently there's been this big new beastie thats all the rage among the hive fleets and Of Course, I wanna try it too
it's called the Norn Emissary, and is a fancy beafte that's probably the biggest plastic kit Tyranids can buy right now. On the tabletop, it's specialty is holding an objective: at the start of the game you choose one point for it and it gets a defensive buff while it stands there.
also when it released there were a bunch of anons calling it mommy in my inbox
Tumblr media
I can see where they were coming from.
unfortunately! I have one big gripe with the emissary: it's a single-pose kit, and all the files I could find online at the time were 3dscans of that same model. no variation or personality at all!
being that this is a creachur that's supposed to embody the Pinnacle of its hive fleet, to be the best of the significant traits of that fleet... well this just wouldn't do
so i started looking at other models I'd had downloaded, considering which I could mash together to make a monster
then I saw her.
the DEATH_CEREBORE free model made by user StrokeMyUnicornsUnihorn.
Tumblr media
shes PERFECT.
a cerebore is a Tyranid creature entirely from lore - there has never been model, stats, or even art for the monster so there's really nothing else like it. a completely unique silhouette, solidly built with extremely thick armour plates...
there's only one flaw. for me to proxy something as my emissary, it needs to be close enough in general shape to be recognizable and there's one distinct difference between the two.
the emissary is bipedal, and the cerebore hexapedal.
this is the point wherein, for my prior digital kitbashing adventures, I would've gone to one of my 3dmodelling friends and begged them to help. alas, they were indisposed. I was on my own.
it was a difficult six hour fight in Blender to wiggle and bend her into the shape I needed her to be, and I scaled her up to 113% size to get just that extra bit of height so she'd stand shoulder to shoulder with a standard emissary.
now, after 22hours of printing, I have her front and back halves in physical plastic, and her four arms and base are well on their way
behold! my beautiful creation!
Tumblr media
warrior and measuring tape to help with a sense of scale
she's so
THICK AND CHONKY
can't WAIT to get some paint on her!!!

top 10 magical girls design-wise?
Shoot, this is hard! There are a number of designs I like, but here are 10 of my faves (in no real order):
10. Kirari Hikaru:
Tumblr media
She's got a unique, recognizable silhouette, and the "toy soldier" aesthetic fits perfectly with how she sees herself as an extension of Yuna's will. It's always nice to see more magical girls wearing pants, too! The fur-trim jacket that she's got draped over her shoulders looks cozy; I'd love to see her wearing it properly one day.
I remember seeing fanart of Hikaru way back in early 2020, shortly after I first got into magireco, and being so excited for the game to get to Arc 2 so I could learn more about her. :') I've got a soft spot for her because of that, haha.
9. Yukino Kanae:
Tumblr media
Kanae's design is just so cool! It's got a very pleasing colour palette, and her outfit does a good job of balancing punk with some typical lacy magical girl flair. The shoulder tattoo-style soul gem is awesome, as are her oversized gloves and rusty pipe weapon. Masc characters are a rarity in magical girl series (perhaps understandably), which makes it that much more of a delight to me when we do get them. :>
8. Yukari Miyuri:
Tumblr media
I want to cup her little face like some kind of small baby animal; she's so cute!! Even her colour scheme is endearing, especially with the little flowers on her dress and helmet. :') The white scarf is one of my favorite parts of her design. It's a nice accessory, and the way she fiddles with it in-game when she's nervous is adorable.
The bike shorts under her dress are a nice touch-- not only are they practical, they tie in well with her dark brown gloves and tights to help bring the outfit together. Points for having an unconventional weapon, too; those are always fun to see.
7. Izumi Kanagi:
Tumblr media
The second I saw Kanagi while playing through A1C7 for the first time, I was like "ah... i'm gonna be in this fandom for the long haul, huh". im a sucker for fur and leather; sue me The black-and-white contrast makes for a sharp look, further improved by the shiny gold accents. Between the navy/military officer-style uniform (complete with some very flashy epaulettes), the fancy monocle soul gem (a cool concept in its own right), and the black neck ruff that resembles a lion's mane, she's got a distinct image of authority and power. Real "Sir, yes sir!" vibes.
6. Satori Kagome (Hyakki Yagyou ver.):
Tumblr media
she's so fuckign CUTE AHHHHHHHH and the youkai Aru-chans are sweet as well!! I can't say no to those faces. ;_; Kagome's regular magical girl outfit is nice too, but this outfit takes the cake for me. The ocean wave geta are a clever idea-- she's got a "drowned ghost" aesthetic (the translucent flames, hanging seaweed, flowing white robes, and seashell staff), so it's kinda like she's coming out of the water.
The red and gold accents on her design break up the white/teal/blue palette in a way that catches the eye, adding a little more visual interest to really make it a solid design.
5. Kasane Ao:
Tumblr media
Ao's design is another one that had me really looking forward to Arc 2 back in the day! Look at that smile; she's precious. ;; She has a more muted, limited colour palette, but it utilizes accents and small accessories well to keep it from feeling boring. Her boots are one of my favorite parts of her design-- they're super cool, plus they have a sort of "badass video game character" vibe that works great with the image she's trying to project. I dig the unique scarf/hair tie thing she's got going on; it kinda reminds me of a cobra's crest. :0
Funny enough, despite how revealing her outfit is, it doesn't feel that fanservicey to me? Maybe because I keep thinking of her skirt as more of a skort, so there's no risk of panty shots. The long sleeves help too, I think-- and her ruffled top is cute in general, especially with the bow in the middle. 10/10 my beautiful baby girl
4. Ooba Juri:
Tumblr media
You can't go wrong with black, red, and gold! I've always been big into dragons, so I'm not surprised I latched onto Juri the way I did. I love her big ol' dragon backpack with its tiny wings and heavy-duty chain straps, and the fact that it's the fuel tank for her flamethrower. It's the perfect mix of cool and fun, which suits her personality really well. I'm digging the gradient in her hair, too-- the black fading to reddish-orange tips is a sweet look, plus it ties in with her title of "the Flame of Ryuugasaki".
Her >:) face is very charming, haha. She looks like the kind of kid who gets in trouble a lot... and she does, but something about her crooked smile makes her feel more like a delinquent with a heart of gold rather than an actual villain. It's a small thing, but it makes for some good, subtle characterization.
3. Chizu Ranka:
Tumblr media
Massive props to GAOU for managing to make a "retro gaming"-themed magical girl design that gets the aesthetic across without being tacky. It's mostly in the fun little soul gem "game pad" on her dress and the black/grey/red palette, which call to mind old consoles like the NES. On that note, I never did outgrow my junior high goth phase; black and red is still one of my favorite colour combos ever. :') i suppose some would call ranka's design pink but it's more like a pink-tinged red to me. like ruby or cerise.
For some specific things I like, the black/silver contrast of her dress (/jacket... thing) is really sleek! I also love the cute ruffles and ribbons on her outfit, particularly the bow in her hair and the ones around her ankles. Honestly she's just super cute to me in general; I love her face and how she looks both fairly dainty and also like she'd shove someone into a locker. Her hair is very pretty as well-- the bluish lowlights look fantastic with the black.
2. Kureha Yuna:
Tumblr media
It's great when a design conveys exactly which sort of impression the character is supposed to give. In Yuna's case, she's got a distinct traditional Japanese + oni aesthetic with her outfit, horn, and weapon, further helped by the gold/black/white palette being reminiscent of a tiger-- something that's both fitting for her as an oni and as the leader of Torayamachi. She looks somewhere between exhausted and like she's been crying, but she's also carrying a kanabo that's almost the same size as her body, implying that she's more brutal than her frail, tired appearance lets on.
It's also just a solid design in general! The colours are nice, the style is cohesive, and nothing feels unfinished or too open. I love how silky her hair looks, and the soul gem hanging from her horn is very eye-catching.
1. Izumi Kanagi (Eternal Darkness ver.):
Tumblr media
This design looks like it came straight out of Monster Hunter or a Soulsborne game. It's so cool!! The crownlike hairpiece, the way her eye blazes behind her iron visor (unfairly awesome), the tattered jabbot, the chipped pauldrons, the fur cape, the ragged tailcoat, the scarring on her gauntlets and boots-- from head to toe, it absolutely nails the "disgraced king/knight" vibe. A symbol of destruction; the lord of something long forgotten... man. Immaculate. Her weapon- a torn pennon heralding nothing- ties in with this perfectly as well.
The whole aesthetic suits Kanagi to a T, and I love that they kept the fur trim present in her standard magical girl outfit. Also, pants! A rarity!! And her soul gem becoming the clasp on her cape/pauldrons is an excellent design choice; it definitely helps sell the regal feeling. 10/10 ough my in-game gems didn't stand a chance

The science behind fancy goldfish: What makes them so unique?
Tumblr media
When it comes to types of pet fish, one group stands out as particularly captivating and unique: fancy goldfish. These ornamental fish have been cherished by aquarium enthusiasts for centuries, and their distinct appearance and behavior have made them a popular choice among hobbyists worldwide. But what exactly sets fancy goldfish apart from other types of pet fish, and what is the science behind their remarkable characteristics? In this article, we'll explore the intriguing world of fancy goldfish and delve into the scientific factors that make them so extraordinary.
The Origins of Fancy Goldfish
To understand the uniqueness of fancy goldfish, it's essential to delve into their origins. Goldfish, as a species, originated in China over a thousand years ago. They were initially bred for food, but as time went on, selective breeding led to the development of various color variations and body shapes. These specialized goldfish eventually became known as "fancy" goldfish due to their striking appearance.
To know more about : -
Varieties of Fancy Goldfish
One of the most remarkable aspects of fancy goldfish is the wide array of shapes and colors they come in. Each variety possesses unique traits that make it distinct. Some of the most popular types of fancy goldfish include:
Common Goldfish: While not as ornate as some other varieties, the common goldfish boasts a classic charm with its vibrant orange color and streamlined body.
Comet Goldfish: Comets are known for their long, flowing tails and elegant appearance, making them a favorite among many aquarists.
Ryukin Goldfish: Ryukins have a distinct hump on their backs, giving them a regal and majestic appearance.
Oranda Goldfish: Orandas are easily recognizable by the fleshy growth on their heads, known as "wen." This wen can develop into intricate shapes and patterns, adding to the fish's appeal.
Fantail Goldfish: Fantails have a fan-shaped tail and a rounded body, creating a graceful and eye-catching silhouette.
Lionhead Goldfish: Lionheads are prized for their lack of dorsal fins and their prominent head growth, resembling the mane of a lion.
Bubble-Eye Goldfish: Perhaps one of the most unique and whimsical varieties, bubble-eye goldfish have fluid-filled sacs beneath their eyes that create the appearance of bubbles. This feature is a result of selective breeding.
The Science of Selective Breeding
The diverse range of fancy goldfish varieties is a testament to the art and science of selective breeding. Aquarists have been practicing selective breeding for centuries to accentuate specific traits and create stunning variations of goldfish. This process involves choosing parent fish with desirable characteristics and breeding them to pass those traits onto the offspring.
Selective breeding relies on the principles of genetics. The genes responsible for traits like color, body shape, and fin structure are passed down from generation to generation. By carefully selecting breeding pairs and controlling the genetic makeup of each generation, aquarists can achieve the desired appearance in fancy goldfish. This meticulous breeding process is at the heart of what makes each type of fancy goldfish so unique.
Water Quality and Fancy Goldfish
While the genetics of fancy goldfish play a significant role in their appearance, their overall health and well-being are heavily dependent on water quality. Maintaining proper water conditions is crucial for keeping these ornate fish healthy and thriving.
Fancy goldfish are more sensitive to water quality issues than their wild counterparts. Their elaborate fins and body shapes can make them less agile, making it challenging for them to navigate through turbulent water or compete for food. To provide the best care for fancy goldfish, aquarists must ensure clean, well-aerated water with minimal ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels.
Unique Behavior and Interaction
Beyond their stunning appearances, fancy goldfish are known for their unique behaviors. They can recognize their owners and even exhibit social behavior, interacting with other goldfish and exploring their surroundings. Some varieties, like the Ryukin, are known for their playful and active nature, while others, such as the Lionhead, may be more docile.
Observing fancy goldfish in an aquarium can be a rewarding experience as they display a wide range of behaviors, from graceful swimming to playful foraging. Their diverse personalities and behaviors add another layer of fascination to these captivating fish.
Conclusion
Fancy goldfish are undoubtedly one of the most intriguing and unique types of pet fish. Their diverse array of colors, shapes, and behaviors is a testament to the art and science of selective breeding, combined with careful maintenance of water quality. These ornamental fish have a rich history, originating in ancient China and evolving into the mesmerizing varieties we know today. Whether you're an experienced aquarist or a newcomer to the world of fishkeeping, fancy goldfish offer a captivating and rewarding experience that showcases the beauty of nature and the science behind selective breeding.

The Anatomy of Melancholy, 61: Ряженье
Table of Contents. Second Instar, Chapter 28. Go to previous. Go to next. TWs: Needles, drug use. Preparations for the nuclear winter solstice.
_______________________________
A tall figure moved about Reese’s dwelling, tending to various materiel, some salvaged, and the rest likely requisitioned from the Deenwood Compound. ‘Choly stepped inside at a caution, rubbing at his shorn neck. He eyed the open space, expecting Reese. His face drooped when the figure faced him. Theirs mirrored his, their mouth open only partly as they eyed him.
‘Choly ineffectually cleared the viscosity in his mouth. Like Bones, Reese had not yet put their mask back on either. He scarce could recognize the Furriers’ leader from his memory of them at the Unfolding, though the vibrant purple and green garments seemed similar to what they’d worn the first time he’d met them. Terrence and Irene’s body now met near full, standard symmetry, save Irene’s extra eye in their left cheek.
“A Vault Dweller, then.” As Reese spoke, ‘Choly noted they had retained their lemniscate dentition. The eight foot tall figure’s lips became a thin line, and they unstuck to pull back their two-tone hair and pace. The smoke had remained to their voice, though now with a neatness to modulation and trachea it had not held prior. “This is where you slept. Are there other officers in your Vault?”
His gaze fell anywhere but on Reese.
“...A JAG Corps lawyer,” he answered, after doing everything he could not to think too hard about the two enlisted. “Really, it’s just me now. Is it a problem?”
“It simply explains a great deal about you. Deeper than the surface. Take, for instance, that you first made yourself more recognizable as an officer when we first met, sooner than wear something with distinct protective benefit. Either you valued concealing your involvement with a Vault, or you did truly awaken very recently, and have no concept yet just how valuable a Vault Suit even is.”
“It’s really nothing that deep,” he lied, laughing off being read. He rubbed at his upper arm. “I just had to change because my uniform to ruined at The Unfold--”
Reese guffawed, transfixed with enthusiasm, and turned heel with an intense glare.
“You see why we discard it all so far in advance! Tell me The Unfolding was everything you expected, Colonel.”
Locked up how to even begin to reply, ‘Choly nodded emphatically, eyes wide and obeisant as he looked up at Reese. Every other Furrier had grown more asymmetrical, more arcane, more everything from The Unfolding, but not their sachem--and somehow, that beguiled him more than anything about the whole ordeal. They clapped their two hands together with urgent delight, flashing him back to gravity.
“It warms me, to know this. We must discuss battle strategy. Earlier you sounded like you had a plan. The General will be contributing her service.”
‘Choly shifted between enamorment and frustration.
“I’m glad we’re in agreement. I’m getting a little tired of being told what I’m supposed to accomplish only after I’ve been cornered into agreeing to it.”
Reese calmed in the rebuff.
“It’s only right.”
‘Choly detailed his understanding, but he lost track of everything spilling out of him, troubled by his infatuation with Reese prior to The Unfolding. Or rather, its absence--now that Reese looked comparatively normal, the magnetism had faded. A recap of everything Liv had discussed with him came, without him really grasping he’d articulated it. His brow strained. He felt more predatory than usual, how his attraction to Reese could simply evaporate in a matter of hours.
He realized at some point that Reese and he had both spoken, but he retained nothing from the exchange. The dialogue waxed looping and incoherent in places, for both of them even, perhaps. At one point, he could have sworn Reese went on that the memories of the Rust Devil tributes had dispersed throughout the Furriers, and that they’d gained gained some tactical advantage in this way. He glanced down at his Pip-Boy, wondering with a petulant absence if he could attribute this brain fog as a side effect of the X-Cell-Squared wearing off. The vitals menu either yielded cryptic results, or his faculties had waned that thin.
Fidgeting idly, he noticed the device had saved a draft. He nodded to himself. It comforted him a bit, that he didn’t have to open it, to know what it was. He’d have to survive the rush, if not just to edit the draft into some enjoyable, viscously detailed reading.
Bones stood again in the doorway, politely waiting her turn to speak as usual. It took some time for the two of them to wave her in, and she smiled to them graciously. Reese snorted and shooed at ‘Choly with the stern protectiveness of a sibling-turned-parent.
“We pick our masks fresh again after The Unfolding,” Reese reminded as Bones took one of ‘Choly’s arms in two of hers. “Be certain to confirm yourself before we leave, Colonel. Thirty minutes, like you said. Not a minute more.”
He could do little more than nod. His heart swapped places with some other organ as the Mistress of Ceremonies dragged him along. It had been one thing, for the Furriers to have outsmarted the Devils with pit and wire traps, on their own property. It would be another entirely, for them to outpace the raiders on the Devils’ terrain. The whole thing felt like a test he hadn’t studied for.
Between Reese’s house and the Reservoir House, he noticed Angel milling idly, transparent in its proximity but also in a deliberateness to keep its distance. He’d have to apologize after Bones had finished with him.
Bones held out the coat for him to inspect. He reached out to run a cautious, gloved hand along the cobalt ultramarine jacquard brocade, jaw slack in distant admiration. It scarcely anymore resembled the white colonel’s coat he’d worn into Voire, between the lining and the turned long-pile peppered fur collar. He pulled back, to remove his rifle and Pip-Boy just long enough for him to slip it on. She gleefully helped him into it, delighting in his features as she fluffed at the collar.
Blood-borne diseases. He clipped his Pip-Boy back on and frowned meaninglessly to himself. The Vault Suit had synced to the Pip-Boy for more comprehensive physiological diagnostics. He swallowed hard to shove down the dread of inevitability. On the one hand, it had told him at the gold course that he had not contracted anything from the Bloodbug stab; but on the other, it had attempted to speculate just about everything else. He gave the device a plaintive touch. Please, never tell me that I fucked up trusting Liv.
His chin bobbled down into the fur, trying to connect their lines of sight while also looking over his glasses.
“Why... why was it necessary to redo the lining before we rush the Devils?”
“The officer’s martial coat had good leather to work from.” She smoothed down his lapels, and briefly broke their gaze to intimately trace at the twin Pharm Corps insignias she’d already pinned in place for him. “Leather has always been the best protection from the postwar elements anyone could hope for. We’ve named ourselves the Furriers, because we learned to survive radiation thanks to tanning and fiber craft. It’s unfortunate that we only had the one source of human leather at the moment’s notice, as it’s the zenith of rad resistance when tanned properly. But leather’s only effective against energy, not mass. I replaced the lining with something not just formidable against the rest, but,” she smiled sweetly to herself, “beautifully fitting of you. I hope the choice of pattern pleases you. It’s the only fabric I had on hand in the right color for you.”
He stood silent, simply running his gloves over the fur time and again. The coat now reminded him of a shuba. Except this one will protect me from the nuclear winter. The floral jacquard brocade reminded him of Hubflower, the way the vaguely iridescent pattern picked up both lavenders and ultramarines. He sniffed, locked up between that juvenile nostalgia again and the fidelity the garment now carried.
“Hub suits me more than I can say. Thank you, Bones.”
He put a hand to her cheek, and watched her watching him. Their lips closed in on one another’s.
A Furrier with a black cat mask and long stringy dark hair burst into the Reservoir House, donning a mix of oiled leather and military twill. Despite still carrying the silhouette of having a head on his shoulders, his arms sprouted from his hips. He pointed at ‘Choly, who jerked back like he’d been caught.
“Sticks said you’d be here. We should’ve left for the rush hours ago! Why should we listen to you! Can’t even handle your root!”
“Felix!” Bones hissed. “Watch your tongue. It was his first time!”
“And it’ll be the Devils’ first time, too. This isn’t Sanctuary! You don’t think--”
“--Don’t you THINK,” Angel entered at a roar behind him, “that you ought to show your commanding officer a little more respect!”
“Sanctuary.” The word fell from ‘Choly like bile. He knew the man meant it as a name, not an idea. “I don’t think what?”
Felix had to think twice before he spoke again, his head whipping around to account time and again for the number of people now in the workshop.
“Sir, with all due respect--and there’s so little. You don’t think it’s going to be a cake walk, do you? Be part of some elite group where you get to shelter yourself from the chaos whenever it’s convenient for you? This may still look loosely like a military outfit, but understand this, and understand it well: We stand with you, not beneath you. Not for a second. Not with who you are.”
A look gnarled ‘Choly’s face, like he’d mistakenly bitten into something rotten. His head barely would give him the words to put in his mouth.
“Excuse me?” His face righted just enough to form a response. “Where was this vitriol and doubt before The Unfolding?”
“Your little fainting spell just proved how frail you are. Whatever being in that hole in the ground did to you, you aren’t fit for command anymore. If you can’t handle your Root, you don’t have the Endurance to stay afloat in a fight.”
“I’m the one to make that measure,” Angel insisted. “Not. You.”
It put itself between the Furrier and ‘Choly. ‘Choly nearly squeaked in resignation that Felix was right, of course he had the constitution of... wet cardboard, wasn’t it? Felix took a hostile step forward, and Angel squared up, drawing its lasers.
“Go ahead and hide behind your baby blue cotillion bot, Colonel Carey. At the end of the day, we all report back to Reese, not your-- you.”
Bones glared at him, fists clenched.
“Felix, save this for the Devils.”
“He’s sure a demon I could put to rest,” Felix muttered, showing himself out.
‘Choly wheezed once he felt safer.
“What was all that about. Angel, thank you for coming to my rescue.”
“I’m sure you could’ve handled it just fine without me,” the Mister Handy started. He couldn’t discern from its tone whether Angel had intended it as a jab.
“Well I’m certainly glad that you swooped in after him,” Bones disagreed. “Between you and me, we must keep Melancholy in one piece. Am I right, D.I. Angel?”
“I didn’t know you brought the Vault Suit,” he appreciated, sheepish.
“Well, I couldn’t very well have let you get off without a change of clothes, now, could I? What sort of Automatron would I be!”
“You really do all you can to provide for me. You even know what I need without me voicing it.” ‘Choly lost his fingers in the fur again, his eyes distant. “Food, safety, security.” His wet eyes picked up, feeling a fleeting clarity. “Security. You’re home, moy Angel. ...Ty dom.”
“Oh, Sir... I turned you loose to the Furriers because I trusted Mister Hawthorne’s statement that X-Root and X-Squared are incompatible. Worst case scenario, you got a scare. Best case scenario, you enjoyed yourself. Sir... Sir, I can’t tell if you trust me anymore, to put your best interests in priority. And you must, if we plan to survive this full assault.”
“Of course I trust you. The... worry’s been whether you trusted me. I have to be honest with you, Angel. I’ve... I’ve been scared to navigate our arrangement, so I’ve avoided it altogether. Even when I thought chems might help.” His pale face shimmered as his breathing got heavier, and his ears stuffed up the harder he focused on keeping his train of thought in utter earnest. “Day’s already been hell, even before the X-Squared wore off too fast. I don’t think I can get through this day without chems, Angel. I feel the only way we’re getting through this is with a fistful of Stimpaks and Calmex.”
“You and I have an agreement, Mister Carey. You’re asking me to administer chems, and you’re asking me politely, at that. You replaced my worn out Nanny attachments with those in better condition. Let’s try them out, shall we?”
“I. Yes, please.” He stared at it, fumbling and dumbstruck that the understood one another so immediately. “Perhaps, just a dose of Med-X for now. If you could. Please.”
He pulled his left arm from its sleeve, and rolled up the Vault Suit just enough to bare his antecubital fold to the robot. It complied with delicate precision and without hesitation. Once he’d smoothed his garment back down, he leaned his forehead against Angel’s chassis, and it held a tendril against his back.
“Where do you suppose Sticks has gotten off to?”
“He’s doing a once-over on the Riverhawk before we head out, Sir. I’ll take you to him, if you must. We’re wasting daylight, the longer we dally so.”
‘Choly nodded. He looked to Bones.
“You’re the two piloting machines.” She urged them on with a certain distance in her eyes, as though it all made sense.
He walked up to her, and held one of her shoulders. Then, he pressed his lips to hers. Her lurid intensity drew him in with all six arms as she pressed back, the two of them coaxed rather than repulsed by the effect on her activated flesh.
“We’re going to get through this in one piece,” ‘Choly told her with a crooked smile.
“Out of many, one,” she agreed, with an even more crooked smile.
‘Choly took up the Syringer rifle and attempted to mount Angel. He struggled to hoist himself up steady on the foot pegs, but managed much better once he wrapped a fist in the juryrigged chain-belt reins and leaned over the top of the Mister Handy. Once it had tared to his weight, it spirited him out of the workshop, around the Christian Hill Reservoir, and to Ick’s house.
“Oh, good.” Sticks only looked up long enough to confirm he’d heard and seen right. “You’re done speaking with Reese. And playing dress-up, apparently. --Don’t... take that as ignorance. I know Bones was played your quartermaster.”
‘Choly didn’t feel confident in his ability to get back up a second time, so he stayed mounted atop Angel. He shoved down a frown as the heaviness of the painkiller hit.
“Are you going to be all right, Jacob?”
“Can’t take the Ick outta Sticks.” An exhaustive silence transpired while Sticks stuck his head back in the passenger side window, fishing through things he and Felix had loaded up. “It’s good you’re up there. Should’ve stayed atop Angel. You’d have been safe up there.”
“Doesn’t matter what I should’ve done. Does it?” He murmured to himself in a vague lyric, trying to find the words. “No, it does matter. Of course it does. But we can’t stand around sorting out what that means. We have war ahead.”
“Best thing I’ve heard all day!” Felix hollered from the driver’s seat, slapping the wheel. “Guns blazing!”
“Straight shot down to Back Central,” Sticks agreed, hoisting himself up into the back of the truck, where his mounted Flamer awaited him. As he stood in place, he glanced to ‘Choly. “You, leading the charge, and us, heading up the back... It works out, to have had the extra ninety minutes before heading out. We’re more together than we would’ve been without it.”
“I’m glad to be favorable.”
Felix turned the engine over, and they made their way out to the entry point of Voire. Any Furriers who had not yet taken up a mask chose theirs from a pile, then joined their neighbors standing ready for their commanding officer. ‘Choly remembered that Reese had urged him to confirm himself as well, but he didn’t feel right taking one of their masks. He reached into Angel’s storage, and produced his burlap sack hood. It had always hidden his identity, but masks provided the Furriers theirs. With this freakish crew marching through Lowell clad in masks and bright colors, he couldn’t help but imagine them as mummers. What dragon might they slay today?
“Ghost,” he murmured, smoothing it down under his coat collar. “Burlap. Sack. Ghost.”
‘Choly waved them all on, to follow out of Voire. As Angel flew backwards, he watched the Riverhawk get further away from him. He resigned to requesting the aforementioned Calmex and Stimpak, which Angel administered to his throat. He stood resolute, riding standing-saddle. The sky darkened to the East behind them. They brought the night.
Night was longest in the winter. He couldn’t help but feel more the part of Kara-chun, than ‘Choly-ada. And it tickled an important part of him.
His mind played Sticks’s voice as he again faced the front.
You’re just a ghost, Mindy. Well, hell’s full ‘cause the Devils are all here. And they’re going to have to deal with us.

the comic's not loading for me shakes fist at wifi, gonna try again tomorrow but i just wanted to say the look of the site is really cute!
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Got the chance to read it So here are some of my thoughts: 1. I like the romantic atmosphere that the comic starts off with warm colours and it gives a vacation ad sensation? 2. My favourite moment is in the pink strange dream world, the colours contrast to the reality of Cara. 4. Fave moment: When that mystery guy shows up and he had corny lines like a romantic parody. It seem so fantastical. 5. I like the colour palette choice of brown tones, shades of pinks. 6. I think the theme is about expectations (it's not clear atm), how Cara is distancing from real relationships and prefer to indulge. 7: I like how the creator shows Cara looking scared of confronting things. It sets an interesting tone of uncertainty. Is she hiding something?(edited)
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I'm super curious about the situation of Cara not remembering her past dreams with Richie, and how that ties into the theme.
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
1. I like how I don’t know what to expect. I also like how the premise is relateable; the idea that you are scared of imperfection making you have high standards in life hit close. 2) Every single time we’re treated to....Tuyetnhi’s lovely use of expression. Also the end part of episode 2, because that’s when I realized it’s going to get dark. 3) A tie between Ana and Richie. Ana because she makes me laugh with her blunt assertions (which...aren’t wrong) and Richie because he’s so flamboyant and extra. I love how much personality they all have. 4) Hands down Richie and Cara. They have a really hilarious dynamic going on. 6) The idea that people seek perfection through their dreams instead of facing reality. Also I really liked how it tackles society’s fixation on everyone to find someone....maybe Cara doesn’t need that and needs to focus on herself first? 7) That I won’t know what to expect. I came into this thinking it was going to be a classic romcom, and then I get hit with implicit horror and trippyness. I have a feeling Tuyetnhi is hinting at some darker aspects of the story we have yet to see. 8) Good lord the expressions. They really do the story justice and make me turn the page every time. Also the colours are beautiful.(edited)
(Whoops sorry keiiii)
7) two moments actually!
The fact that their wide eyed sweaty expressions matched made me laugh really hard
And also Cara’s quick acceptance of the situation was so unexpected and hilarious I took a double take. Also props to the colour dissonance; that looks like meme material right there!
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
yeah. I want to make it clear that Cara is like "This is really not my day." lol
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
Well....you portrayed that sentiment perfectly
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Omg yes the wide eyed expressions were also making me laugh! Well that was an expression I didn't expect coming into the story(edited)
I was wondering if that was suppose to be serious or humorous?
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
both LOL
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
I see the horror you got going there Tuyetnhi Reminds me of...I dunno Jojo?
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
well............ yes and no lol
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
But I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen
Although...if we’re going by the silhouette....is she scared of herself?
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN

I like that sense of not knowing what's happening? :)(edited)
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
that will be coming up in Ch. 3 soon
so please wait till then thank u lol
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
So far it's tough to choose a fave character right now since I feel the story has just started its first segment. I would like to wait until more content is shown before I can make a firm choice? (I'm analytical, I like to go over OCs flaws and strengths once I know more about them)(edited)
I'm curious to learn about her ex crush, since we only get a glimpse of how Cara precieve him. But what is Dean really like? *Drum rolls(edited)
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
you got.... good questions
it will be rewarded.... later on LOL
mariah (rainy day dreams)
1. What did you like about the beginning of the comic? I really liked the colors and island vibe. And this was even before Animal Crossing came out and I started hardcore living that island life I just love a good, soft pink to purple gradient generally speaking so the opening of the story was like falling into a comfy brain pillow for me. 2-4 I'm just gonna answer these ones kind of all together because they thoughts on then are all kind of threaded together into one big thought. After having read through the archive I really liked the scene with Ana and Cara. When I first read it I was like "dang, she's giving Cara such a hard time," but after having read the scenes where Cara just refused to admit to Richie she doesn't know what's going on I really retroactively appreciated Ana's willingness to call Cara on her bullshit XD I think it's a really good foil trait to have for a protagonist who seems dead set on avoiding confrontation even though it seems like doing so is most likely just gonna come back to bite her later. I imagine we aren't going to see Ana for a while though unless Cara is able to use her Phone A Friend card in the dream realm XD I am also looking forward to seeing more of the Cara doppelganger and how she and Cara interact with each other going forward. That feels like an exciting and drama filled mystery
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
1. What did you like about the beginning of the comic? I also love the atmosphere. The color choices are just so beautiful. 2. What has been your favorite moment in the comic (so far)? Ana pointing out Cara's BS hahahaha. 3. Who is your favorite character? Definitely Ana. She's so down-to-earth from what I can tell, someone I'd want to be friends with. 4. Which characters do like seeing interact the most? Probably Ana and Cara. I like to see good friendships depicted, especially in a romance. 5. What is something you like about the art? If you have a favorite illustration, please share it! In general, everything is so soft and pretty. I also really appreciate the fact that all the characters have larger noses. If I had a favorite panel, it would be at the beginning, the sunset beach waves. 6. What is a theme you like that the comic explores? So far, I'm not sure about themes, but I like the talk about the pressure parents give to their children to get married. 7. What do you like about the comic’s story or overall related content? There's a lot of mystery, so I'm looking forward to learning about Cara's dreams, Richie, and the key. 8. Overall, what do you think the comic’s strengths are? The visuals are really nice. I can't stop gushing about the color choices and the pretty atmosphere.(edited)
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
The way Cronaj sums up their thoughts on OiYD, I'm agreeing with the statement on Ana and Cara! Esp friendship part
Deo101 [Millennium]
I'll answer the questions hopefully later this week, but this song reminded me of the comic!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4z5ecLCvSQ(edited)

Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
Oooo
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
He's definitely hot and extra
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
lmao
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
My joke idea is that Cara is secretly in a reality show starring Richie and her and the bonds they play out is meant for a live broadcast. But she's clearly not agreeing to this(edited)
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
oh god. i don't think that's good for Cara's mental state lmao
Feather J. Fern
Also I have to say, I do love how the first cover is literally Cara being the meme of "Oh no he's hot"
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)

Also I finally started it, while a bit late, I have to relate to Cara being an accountant.
Also I think my favourite panel is "Welp that worked"
Also I have to appreciate picking a pink that doesn't grate on the eyes.
https://gyazo.com/71fe22ea6ac2ebf6b3d85531c66bf8ed Another really good panel
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I enjoyed making that one LOL

that face is one of my favourites not gonna lie
Feather J. Fern
I really like the surrealness of the story, can't wait to see what happens next
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
same! I feel like something is about to happen
I'm also wondering how Richie would react to the real world
like....the ex. And her parents.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)

Feather J. Fern
More like everyone reacting to Richie XD
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
Yeah pretty much
Like can Richie handle the world?
More like
Can the world handle RICHIE
RebelVampire
I like that the beginning really contrasts the dream and Cara's reality pretty quickly. I kind of feel it catches that feeling of coming out of a dream to face reality which kind of sucks, and also plays into the themes of dream vs. reality and expectation vs. reality. It's very easy to idealize things, whether as a route of escapism or just because it sounds appealing. But the reality of things generally is always different, and I like that we're seeing this full force in the comic through Cara's perspective. And the contrasts between the two really enhance those topics. My favorite moment in the comic so far is probably when Cara meets what I assume is Dean. Cause I really loved that both parties were kind of at fault, and I also liked how quickly that convo devolved into a grumpfest, because that felt very realistic. My favorite character right now is definitely Richie, because he is ridiculous and sympathetic at the same time. I adore his exaggerated personality, while at the same time feel sorry for him since for him the memories are clearly there and like...I would not want to be in the shoes of someone where the person they loved no longer remembered them. As for character interacting the most, Cara and Richie because that entire premise of one person remembering and the other not makes for a really tense and awkward situation. It's hard to tell where it's going to go. What I like about the art is the palettes of color chosen, since there's some beautiful scenery as well as fantastic contrasts when needed to make certain moments pop (like dream vs. reality).
As for the story content, what I actually like the most is that Cara is a flawed protagonist. I've read a lot of stories where the protagonist is always 100% right in the relationship and is just eternally the victim because society pressure. But Cara has a lot more going on, since she's clearly been at fault in some interactions, and while we can sympathize with people pressuring her into relationships, she also maybe takes it too far by being avoidant of basically every relationship. However, since she has these traits, I'm more invested into her personal dilemmas since she'll actually make mistakes when dealing with stuff. Which I think this is the overall strength of the comic. Cara is just a damn good protagonist who is easily likeable but isn't perfect and whose imperfections are not just brushed off so easily.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
;_; .... thank you.
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
I love the story so far! When I first started, I figured it would be some sort of awkward story where Richie comes into the real world and he has to figure out how to, like, act natural, and hilarity ensues. But holy cow, Cara losing her memories, and the slide into somewhat of a horror angle - it's not something I expected (though admittedly I could have read the synopsis lol), but it's definitely something I like!(edited)
Comic Tea Party
DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 2
9. Do you think the people around Cara were right to try and pressure her into a relationship? Overall, what do you think the comic has to say about relationships and the themes regarding relationship pressure?
10. Is what Cara experiencing dream or reality, and where is the line between them in this case? Additionally, why do you think her dreams have the potential to become reality as opposed to other people? Also, what is the overall message underlying these themes?
11. Is Richie really just a dream Cara dreamt up, or is there something more to him? If he somehow makes it to Cara’s world, do you think he’ll be able to adjust to that reality? Also, can he win Cara over?
12. What do you think the Cara imposter is about, and what does this have to do with the entire situation? Do you think Cara will eventually remember her dreams? Lastly, what do you think Cara has in store for her as the story continues?
Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
9. I personally don’t think it was great of the people in Cara’s life to pressure her like that. Sure, they mean well, but it’s most likely bringing Cara’s self esteem down by a lot. I have a feeling that her dreams/reality colliding together is partially motivated by that; the pressure of pleasing society has made her....subconsciously take drastic measures?
10. I’m actually not sure! Maybe there’s a supernatural explanation to it, or it could all just be a dream. Dreams have a way of showing a person’s innermost desires or fears, so maybe Cara’s desires and fears are coming alive in response to external stress factors. So perhaps she opened a portal of sorts between the realms in some way (there’s a key!!!!).
11. Oh I’m thinking they might end up together. But the realist inside me thinks...perhaps what Cara needs isn’t romantic love, but more independent love and being able to love herself. What DOES worry me, however, is the fact that Richie seems...a bit desperate for Cara to like him. Is there a condition to his love after all? If so, that means that it’s possible he’s forced in some way to love her or make her love him. And that’s not really conducive to romance, is it?
12. Ah...the thing that makes me mystified the most. Cara seems to have a negative view of herself, since she told her to get out in the end of chapter two. However, Cara #2 seems to be pretty helpful; knocking on the door to tell her to get out of the house (which Richie has her in), so in a way letting her out. While our Cara seems to dislike her a lot, I think the key to the story would be our Cara needing to accept this double Cara to be really free. Maybe she will, maybe she won’t! But from what I can see from the story and like I’ve said earlier...maybe Cara needs to be able to find love within herself. Love for that Cara double, and enough love to become independent and not bend to society’s overwhelming pressure for outside romance. I hope she finds that as the story comes along, and know that it’s okay to not be ready for love.
As for Richie...hmm. He’s dealing with an amnesiac heroine, and adjusting to the real world. I’m sure it’s going to lead to some hilarious hijinks, but hopefully he can manage! He seems up to the task
RebelVampire
I think whether people were right to pressure Cara is a tricky gray area. On the one hand, no, they were wrong. Nobody should be forced into a relationship. But on the other hand, if you know a person is actively self-sabotaging, isn't it more correct to speak up? So to me this is maybe a situation of good intentions with bad execution. However, I do think overall the comic does say pressuring people into relationships sucks and plz don't do that cause that's how you make ppl run further away. I think it's both, because a dream is reality in a sense. I think many of us have had dreams that caused real emotional affects, whether negative or positive. So the line between them is merely the fact effects are limited. Cara have may have just found a way to cross that line and make a dream a tangible thing that has more consequences. As for why her dreams, I don't know. Maybe she's just super good at dreaming. I do think as the overall message though is that dreams are good but not when we get lost in them, because then we idealize and reject "reality" in ways that aren't healthy. I do think Richie is primarily something Cara dreamt up, but kind of not maybe. Like sure maybe Cara is idea creator, but something else was involved in making the physical reality of that idea. As for Richie adjusting to Cara's world, I'm sure it will be laughably hilarious. I do think he can sort of win Cara over, at least in the sense of being friends. Cause how can you hate Richie? I'm taking a shot in the dark and saying Cara imposter is the embodiment of Cara's missing memories but since they're just memories, all they can do is imitate. As for Cara remembering, I feel like it will be yes but I kind of want it to be no. I like the idea of them having to reform a relationship entire from scratch.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
Oo good impressions! I wish I have more to say but it would affect the story LOL. Enjoyed reading everyone's theories tho!
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Ok my turn, let's see what my head theories are: 9: I felt the same annoyance as Cara but it's a mixed feeling, Even though, people shouldn't pressure a lady on her love life, she also has a problem with being in relationships. Or I remember one quote from the story was how she 'ditched her dates by rushing to the bathroom.' although I don't know her circumstance, I do know she has issues to settle too. Relationship pressure is real, especially as a young person grows older. 10. From the comic visuals, it feels much like it's her escapism dream. The only clue I got, is that her holding a literal 'key' connecting both worlds, is evidence that both world could collide. So far, we haven't seen other people's dreams, or whether this is an unusual occurrence in the world? It seems to be a message about idealistic relationships. Since Cara seem to turn away real ones, it manifested? 11. I'm curious about Richie's character too. He seems like a powerful imagination, enough to sway the lead, so he's more than a simple figment. I wonder if his submissive, flirtatious (?) personality was build in him. He doesn't seem to have a 'life' outside his dream house, or so far. 12. I'm not sure whether the 'Other Cara' might be trying to help her or is that.. actually a shadow side? I don't want to say too much, but it's interesting to see where the story goes.(edited)
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
Oh! You make a good point about Richie; I never thought about that! Do you think maybe he's simply a part of Cara and eventually gains his own sentience/personality?
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Hehe I like analyzing dreams :3 In dream theory, I feel he could be? I was more skeptical whether he should be treated as a real character or something else.(edited)
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
man this does make me want to look up dream psychology
i have a feeling...Tuyetnhi is using some theories from that
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
Hmmmm dream psychology you say?
I guess you can say there's some elements of that, but it's not a major chunk of it if that makes sense lol
Comic Tea Party
DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 3
13. What are you most looking forward to seeing in regards to the comic?
14. Any final words of encouragement for the comic?
Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
13. Maintaining the will power to finish OIYD! so I can see it as its end lmao. As a passion project but also something that I want to invest in when I have the time, I hope ya'll looking forward in reading Ch. 3 very soon lol.
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
13. I really want to see how both Cara and Richie will develop as characters. Whether Cara will figure out for herself what being both independent means....and whether she does want a relationship for herself and not for other people. Likewise with Richie, I want to see if he'll be able to be his own person...and whether he's real or not. I have a lot of questions that I want to be answered, and I can't wait to keep reading.
14. Tuyetnhi, good luck on the webcomic. It's hard to start one and even harder to pull off a good one, and I know yours is a good one. I really look forward to reading more from you. You're amazing (edited)
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
thank you
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
13. I'm interested in learning more about Cara's conflicts, why she is hesitant about having a real relationship vs her dream one? I love the unexpected dark twist that the story seems to be going. 14. I want to say, no pressure and take your time to complete the chapter. Just know you have my support and willing to read when it is ready. Good luck
RebelVampire
I'm looking forward to more Richie being Richie. Because he is an adorable person. And also because I'm waiting for some 'reality' culture shock. My final words are that this comic has a strong themes game going on and an intriguing premise, so it'll be fun to see where the comic is in a few more chapters since I'm pretty sure we're in for a wild ride.

Queen Album Art Rated
Tumblr media
Queen (self titled)
Decent, idk why it like it was shot through my shower glass thou. The purple is very fairy mystic appropriately for it’s content. Looks pretty dramatic 6/10
Tumblr media
Queen II
Ionic, fierce. They are all serving such a look, I just love that you can’t see any of their eyes. Drama, hair, lighting, what more could you want. 15/10
Tumblr media
Sheer Heart Attack
Um yes. Sweaty, disheveled, shirts wide open, Freddie’s fly is open (?), unclear which direction is gravity. Exceptionally only Roger is making eye contact with the camera.  12/10
Tumblr media
A Night at the Opera
Ionic, lovely. The night one is on the white background, the day one is on the black background, argh I love them so much. The animals are vague silhouette compare to other versions of their crest. Why is the phoenix white? Aesthetic. The crab looks like he’s on fire. 8/10
Tumblr media
A Day at the Races
No more baby green faerie but instead adult tits out faires with a quiver. The phoenix’s wings aren’t broken in this one. The addition of the crown in the Q, we stan. The crab isn’t lying their limply. That being said lion’s crowns are lamer and the Q isn’t as wibbly wiggle. 9/10
Tumblr media
News of the World
Where does Roger even get this cool ass artwork? And they cut him out of the front image. The death, the drama, the blood that looks like ketchup. Deacon looks like a princess falling with such a blissful expression. That robot face, those blowjob lips. 16/10
Tumblr media
Jazz
I’m too stupid to understand it but it looks cool and trippy, vaguely like an optical illusion of like a record in a sphere. Why is queen written five times across the top, why is the title ‘Jazz’ so small, why are there little bicycle girls (like I understand it’s because of the song but what does it have to do with the rest of the image)? Idk what’s going on but it’s sharp. 8/10
Tumblr media
The Game
*vine voice* why? I like the leather, very Grease and appreciate with rockabilly. That being said this is terrible. Freddie is serving the look, Roger is almost got it but Deaky and Brian looks like cardboard cutouts. Those glasses on Brian make him look like an insect, an ugly insect. The composition, the lighting, the font of the text and that grey dead space. Terrible. Awful. By far their worse. 3/10
Tumblr media
Hot Space
Nice. Recognizable, bright, distinct. Simple yet understandable and clearing serving a look. And fierce, everyone looks sharp expect for Brian that doesn’t seem to be making eye contact. Title is a little small. 10/10
Tumblr media
The Works
It’s fine, nothing is wrong with it I just expect more from queen. This is pretty bland. What is on Roger’s feet? Were they all give the same instructions because Brian is like ‘I’m gonna kill you’ and Deacon’s like ‘let’s make cupcakes.’ whatever, forgettable 4/10
Tumblr media
A Kind of Magic
Different, experimental. I do love a band that takes risks. The color combinations is very 80′s. Why are the so buff? Why aren’t they wearing shirts under their jackets or wearing drop pants? It’s a little dated now (didn’t age well) but they are all grooving and dancing and smiling and enjoying themselves. 6/10
Why is Brian’s hair so dark?
Tumblr media
The Miracle
Okay so first of all, this is horrifying and scaring and no. Their lips are way too close together. The Deacon eye contact and small smile is reassuring . The eyebrow mergers are all scaring and so are the eyes. The chins... Distinctive art I guess and quite revolutionary at the time. The background is weirdly the middle of nowhere. That being said the wiggly Q is back and I stan the wiggle Q. 5/10
Tumblr media
Innuendo
No for real though, Roger has great taste in art. Odd, conceptual but not abstract. Districtive, clear font on the white background. Sphere + a banana, what’s not to like. Nice not much to say. 8/10
Tumblr media
Made in Heaven
:’| um you know, it’s powerful. discreet and classy, cheerful pose yet sober. It’s a really nice balance and the title being small but easily recognizable as that ‘made in china’ sticker. The ‘mood lighting’ from the sun setting nothing more than a silhouette, poetic. Oh shit I’m getting too emo. anyways 10/10
Tumblr media
Queen Forever
I love this and it looks so good on like t-shirts and stuff. Strong faces, strong eye contact still identifiable. The black and white works really well here (unlike with The Game). The transparent / opaque effect, how they are all blending into each other, forever together, this is how you do it Miracle and not be creepy.  9/10

ObiYuki Madness Championship- Really Royalty Reveal
Remember the line art I posted for the semifinals? this is the story that was supposed to go with it. Good luck and enjoy!
Ghosts Of History Past
~5800 words
TW: minor injury to major character (no blood but bones are gross too) and discussion of deaths. Read with caution, my friends.
“We’re almost there. Just hang on,” Obi yelled over his shoulder as he pressed his heels into Whinny's sides, urging the young mare to dig deep for more speed.
Shirayuki fisted her hands tighter in Obi's black undershirt, pulling him closer for more stability. Falling off the horse at break-neck pace was out of the question. She had exhausted her medical supplies helping a seaside village near the Tanbarun border, about a week’s ride away from Port Town, Tanbarun. If she or Obi were injured beyond something simple, there'd be no help until they could reach home, or at least another village.
Obi’s sturdy, weatherproofed uniform coat was wrapped around her, warming her against the cool rain. Obi, being every bit the valiant knight that he pretended not to be, had insisted she wear it when they stopped briefly to let their horse drink from a small stream. Care for their faithful steed and ensuring Shirayuki stayed healthy were the only concessions Obi had been willing to make as they tried, and failed, to outrun the squall that had whipped up out of nowhere, as they so often did this close to the coast.
The original plan had been to leave after lunch and travel along the coast, where various port towns could offer comfortable lodgings, good food, and proper horse care, before making a brief stop at Yuris Island to see Kihal. They were expected in another town along the coast in several hours.
Nature- and perhaps fate, it seemed, had other plans.
Not only had they left later than intended because they wanted to find a souvenir for Ryuu, but they had barely been traveling for two hours when the first rumbles of thunder echoed overhead. Not long after, the deafening roar of a downpour caught up to them, rolling in fast and hard overhead.
Hours from the nearest oceanside town, Obi tensed under her hands where she held onto him before making a decision to spirit them further inland. Whatever decision he had made, he hadn't liked it.
“I know a place,” he had said. But, of course he knew a place. He always knew a place. The man she desperately clung to was nothing if not steadfast. Reliable in any situation and all too often self-sacrificial to a fault.
Rain pelted them in sheets, obscuring the path ahead. How Obi, or Whinny for that matter, could see where they were going was beyond Shirayuki's comprehension. She just squinted her eyes closed and pulled herself closer to Obi
The rain, getting colder as the minutes rolled on, stung her eyes and she blinked rapidly in a useless attempt to keep them clear. Even the hood she always wore while traveling was no help against the wind and rain.
Obi and their horse had no protection whatsoever. It pained her, aching deep in her chest, that Obi would go without his coat just so she could be more comfortable. She knew he’d never listen if she told him she didn’t want him put out because of her because that was just Obi. Poor Whinny, though. She was probably wondering what she had done to deserve such punishment.
“How much further, Obi?” She sputtered as a particularly nasty burst of wind dislodged a slew of water from the overlapping canopy of tree branches overhead.
“You'll be dry and warm soon enough, Miss,” Obi tried to joke but tension and weariness threatened to break his voice. He hid it well, granted. He was a brilliant actor when he needed to be but the hitch in his voice right before he called her, ‘Miss,’ belied how unsure he was.
That would have been an interesting topic to entertain: he knew a place but wasn’t sure about something. What was it that had him questioning his decision? However, the more pressing matter was the lightning around them, escalating in frequency as the storm grew more volatile.
Five eternal minutes later, an almost sinister looking building appeared before them- an ink black silhouette against the dark slate backdrop of storm clouds. Heaven and stars, the building looked like it belonged in one of the scary stories Obi always told around the campfire.
From a distance out, it looked ominous. As they approached, it's shape truly took form, like a mutating monster from a child's nightmare deciding what form would be most terrifying.
Shirayuki sucked in a sharp breath. She trusted Obi with her life. She really did. He'd proven himself more than deserving of that trust on more than one occasion. But Shirayuki couldn't help but worry about this place he was taking her.
Why was it so dark? How did he know about it? Why did he take her somewhere he, himself, had obviously not wanted to go? What happened here?
It was a chalet of sorts with stonework walls, charred black as night from a hot-burning fire long since dead. At least the question of why it was so dark had been answered, though it only added to the uneasy feeling settling deep in Shirayuki's bones.
Grotesque gargoyles with ravenous snarls loomed in protective stances above the door and placed intermittently on the roof. A covered wooden porch was mostly obliterated, with only a small platform left standing under the door itself. Large support beams and sections of roof lay splintered on footboards that had caved in or turned to ash from the heat of the blaze that had marred the building beyond repair.
Arrow-slit windows were interspersed with stained glass windows, but most of them were blown out. The guard towers on all four corners were barely recognizable as part of the structures defense. Obi had brought them to a certifiable fortress, albeit a fortress that also boasted comfortable living for a prominent noble family, but a fortress nonetheless. But what happened that such a defense-ready building had been this far decimated?
“Obi?”
Shirayuki's voice was a mere whisper, a hesitant question. The last thing she wanted was to question him and make him feel as though she didn't trust his judgment, especially when he had her best interest in mind, but if any building in all of Clarines was hiding ghosts, it would be this place.
He never even flinched, as usual. He just kicked his right leg over the exhausted horse's drooping neck and slid down her side before turning around to begin the hasty work of freeing their bags.
A bright streak of light, piercing through the darkness that had settled in around them as night encroached further, was nearly blinding. A tree nearby had been struck, if the evidence of a crackling sound and subsequent crash of branches hitting the ground was to be believed. The roaring clap of thunder answering the lightning's beckon call was immediate this close to the strike.
Whinny, bless her, remained resolute despite the storm picking up intensity around them. She didn't so much as twitch as Obi pulled their packs from her back and dropped them unceremoniously on the muddy ground beside them.
“It's okay, Miss. It isn't much to look at, but the building is still sound. You will be safe,” Obi finally replied as he turned to pull her down from Whinny's back. He was smiling, but it was forced.
Hands steadying her hips, he helped her drop safely to the ground. In a swift motion, he had bent down and collected their saddlebags from the muck, slinging them over his shoulder and sending muddy drops scattering through the air.
She reached out for his sleeve but met his fingers instead. He had been reaching back for her as she reached for him. Shirayuki stared dumbly at the place where their fingers met as she slowly wound her hand into his and laced their fingers tightly together.
Something about this Manor ate at her- a nagging warning in the back of her mind, fuzzy and indiscernible but undeniably present. She used the warmth and pressure of her palm and fingers cradled in his to ground her in the promise of safety that Obi always provided.
Obi turned to look at her with an apologetic smile. “We will get you inside and dry so you can warm up,” he offered as they began picking their way over the remnants of the porch.
The door was unlocked, knob twisting easily, but years of weather and neglect had it stuck on its hinges. Obi struggled with it for a moment before deciding to ram his shoulder into it to dislodge it…. Twice.
To his credit, he managed to keep a straight face, but it was impossible to fool a pharmacist who just heard the distinct pop of the ball joint of a shoulder shifting out of place.
That would need to be fixed and sooner rather than later. The last thing they needed was added injury if the muscles around his shoulder seized too much. It’d be spasming now but after that it would become stiff. That’s when putting it back in place was the most risky. She could break his arm trying to put his shoulder back together.
The satisfied smirk he flashed her warmed her slightly, though she knew he would be feeling that dislocation soon enough. His range of motion would be nearly gone and Whinny needed tended to.
“There's a barn out back. I'm going to tuck Whinny in for the night,” Obi said, as he ushered Shirayuki through the threshold of the finally open door. He gingerly plucked the packs from his busted shoulder before dropping them carelessly to the floor with a thick squelch.
He was out the door, silent as a mouse, before Shirayuki could even turn to face him. She had wanted to look at his shoulder immediately but he was already gone so she focused her attention on the dilapidated Lord's Manor they we're officially squatting in for the night.
Once-proud twin staircases curved beautifully up to the second floor. Well, the curve itself was beautiful, graceful. The stairs themselves were crumbling away. The fire had apparently left little of the house unharmed. Char marks marred the wood and the gilding was soot-stained. Nearly everything was covered in a thick layer of ash.
Most of the lavish grand reception hall was stained from the thick black smoke that lingers after a fire. It was tragic what had happened to this place. Even looking more defensible than a royal palace, this place would have been stunning back in its day.
Opulent work always on display in noble houses was lost here. How many skilled Craftsmen had their hard work lost to time because of whatever wickedness had obviously transpired here? Fires that burn hot enough to do this were never accidental.
To her left was the standard cloakroom used for guests when the noble family entertained large parties. The door was broken at the bottom and knocked off its hinges as though someone had burst into the room. The thought made her shiver. What cause would they have for breaking into a room that's sole purpose was to hold coats?
It only took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the minimal light but the more her eyes adjusted, the worse the scene before her became.
A large- too large- dark brown stain covered the tattered remnants of what had once been a light colored rug. With the state of the house- upturned furniture, ransacked cloak closets, and a systematic path of destruction as far as she could see- it was likely the stain on the carpet was human blood.
Obi said he knew this place. Had it been a hit he had executed, very literally, in his time as an assassin?
Shirayuki's stomach churned violently at the very thought. She had never had to entertain the idea of him being a trained murderer-for-hire. Not even when Haruka had hired him to scare her away from Zen. The concept was so far removed from the man she knew so well, the man she lived with, worked with, and had snowball fights with. It wasn’t Obi.
Shirayuki pushed down on the thought. It would likely break Obi's heart if he knew she had thought such things, especially if there was some other explanation for how he knew of this place.
Moving further in would require her to walk under the unstable looking double staircase and also walk in close proximity to the blood stain that was entirely too much blood loss for even two fully grown adults to survive.
She searched desperately for something less grim to preoccupy her thoughts. To her right, she found a hall with a door. She peaked in to find a smaller cloak closet. A closed door at the far end of the hall, obscured from the view of the front door by a wall, appeared to be her best option.
Like the stairs, it was burned horribly but, unlike the ominous cloak closet off the main reception hall, it was intact on relatively undamaged hinges. Rusted with age, but otherwise what one would expect to see.
She tested the handle, her nerves threatening to get the better of her the further it turned. It moved easily under her touch until the soft click of the latch releasing reverberated far too loudly in the otherwise deathly silent cavernous manor.
Pushing through the door, she was met with a room almost untouched by the damage. Shirayuki sent a quick prayer of thanks up to the stars above. She was willing to take any reprieve from the ghastly tale being told by the rest of the house- or what remained of it, anyway
Thick layers of dust and grime from years of neglect littered everything from the furniture and floor, to the paintings lining the walls. The curving arms of the chandelier in the center of the room, modest for a house this size, was heavy with cobwebs. The crystals that dangled from it were too caked in muck to shine even when lightning arced through the sky outside.
White couches, yellowed with age, sat under the chandelier with an impressively carved mahogany table between them. Small tables matching the coffee table and armchairs matching the sofas were interspersed between gargantuan bookshelves rivaling the beauty and size of those found in the Lyrias research facilities.
A large fireplace in the middle of the long inner wall caught her attention. It was carved similarly to the table, an intricate knotwork pattern ran up the sides and the gilding was only lightly tarnished. The marble mantle held standing display cases housing weaponry that had become defunct with the progression of time and technology.
Shirayuki moved through the room, wanting to take in everything about this one sheltered haven amongst destruction but feared disturbing anything. Passing by the couches to the front of the fireplace, she pulled off Obi's coat as well as her own and splayed them across the floor to aid the drying process if they could manage to get a fire going.
At the furthest end of the library stood a desk, about the size and worth of Zen’s desk back in Wistal Castle but the painting behind it was the focal point of the room, at least from the perspective of walking through the door.
The lack of light from the storm still raging outside had made it impossible to see from the door. Even half way through the room, she could barely make it out.
The gold frame was even more intricately carved than the mantle or table but the family staring at her stole the very breath from her lungs.
She inched closer, staring into the faces of a beautiful, young noble couple- likely no older than she and Obi were now, their toddler son, and a baby girl. Shirayuki was utterly entranced.
Both parents were smiling broadly, dressed in everyday finery- a lavish concept speaking of their wealth since most of even the noble class didn't spend the extra money for painting commissions where they weren't dressed in attire fit to be in the presence of the king himself.
Most striking, though, were the yellow eyes, olive skin, and dark hair shared by the mother and son.
The urge to touch was overwhelming, pulsing in her fingertips until she could no longer resist. She brushed away the grit and grime covering the toddler boy’s face, allowing the colors to come through more vibrantly. The faces felt familiar to her but Shirayuki was terrified of the implication that she was beginning to piece together a scenario so much worse than this being a hit Obi had been ordered to take out.
With the same delicate touch as she used on the doorknob earlier, she traced the apple of a puffy cheek of the young boy. His hair was longer than it potentially was now, similar in length but more smoothed down than the style Ryuu still wore to this day.
But those eyes.
She knew those eyes.
She knew them well.
They were piercing sharp, even at an age of no more than four. He appeared attentive and bright, if annoyed. Understandable, considering he was so young and standing still for a portrait was likely a boring task- especially for someone so inclined to movement, if it truly was him she was looking at.
She turned her gaze upward to the woman, but her hand remained on the cheek of the boy. Her eyes matched his exactly in shape, size, and clarity. Too smart and far too brave for their own good.
“Leave it to you to find the library when you've been left alone for a few minutes,” Obi teased, his breath tickling her ear.
Shirayuki dropped her hand as though she had been caught snooping where she didn't belong. Preoccupied as she was, she hadn't noticed him come up behind her. It had been a long time since he had been able to startled her. She could usually feel the air shift as he approached. The man had an aura around him as loud and boisterous as his personality, provided he let someone close enough to learn it.
His assessment wasn't wrong either. If there was one thing she was good for, it was sussing out a breathtaking library. But there were more important matters at hand now that he was back from tending to Whinny.
“Let me see that shoulder,” she said, turning her face to him.
How had he gotten so close without her noticing? At least he was looking ahead at the painting that she had been touching.
Her face heated when she realized they were close enough she could kiss his cheek if she leaned in an inch. He seemed to notice their proximity as well and moved back a step, giving her the more modest space she needed.
“Shoulder,” she prompted again, pointing to the injury as she turned to face him fully.
Obi gestured with an open, sweeping hand toward the couches before leading her there with a soft grasp of her wrist. The touch was tender as though he was holding a butterfly he didn't want to accidentally crush.
She sat and waited quietly as he padded over to the fireplace, lost to shadows until lightning lit up the sky again. A stark reminder of just how inhuman his ability to see almost perfectly in the dark could feel at times.
A small amount of firewood was still tucked into a neat pile off to the side. Clearly she had missed it in her initial perusal of the room's distinguishing features. Shirayuki heard Obi stacking the logs but the striking of a match was obvious. Slowly, the room filled with the yellow-orange glow of a healthy flame as more and more wood caught.
Obi perched himself next to her, busted shoulder closest to her. Shirayuki began the long task of working her fingers and thumbs into the muscles of his upper arm and shoulder.
He sucked in a sharp breath and she halted.
“Did that hurt you,” she whispered, pulling her hands back an inch.
“No, Miss,” Obi laughed, though it sounded tense to Shirayuki. “I just wasn't expecting a massage.”
Shirayuki hummed in response before setting her hands back in motion. She following the long, lean lines of his muscles with small circular movements.
“I want your muscles to relax enough to allow your arm to pop itself back into place.” She continued drawing circles into muscle, only using enough pressure to slowly coax the muscles to release.
Actual massage-level pressure would likely do more harm than good, she knew. But she was unqualified, with limited light and limited resources, to use either of the more dangerous methods of forcing the ball joint of the arm back into the socket of the shoulder.
In the pharmacy, she could do it without batting an eye. Here, in the middle of a torrential downpour with night already upon them, there was no chance to leave this evening. The best chance Obi had of not risking further injury was to simply relax so his body could do the dirty work for both of them. If something went wrong, there was no medical backup out here, nor would there likely be any found nearby.
She needed to get his mind off the pain if he was going to relax and the silence had already stretched on too long, so she began talking. A distraction usually helped. “How's Whinny?”
“Annoyed with me,” he said, laughing lightly. “I gave her a few apples and the oats that were meant to be our breakfast. We will need to restock. And I gave her a quick brush after I untacked her.”
“How did you manage to get her saddle off with this arm banged up the way it is,” she asked.
Ignoring her question, he chose a different topic, which likely meant she would disapprove of how he had handled the situation but he was already hurting, no sense in badgering him about it.
“The barn is still sturdy and a little more uphill than the house, so flooding isn't-” he broke off with a hiss as a pop echoed in the room.
“Done,” Shirayuki said, relief making her sound more cheerful than she actually felt. “Touch your opposite shoulder with the hand on your dislocated arm, please.”
He side-eyed her questioningly, but acquiesced, slowly lifting his hand to grasp the shoulder he usually massaged when nervous.
“Excellent,” Shirayuki beamed. “Fixed. A dislocated shoulder won't allow that motion, she said, tearing a section of her skirts away.
He left his arm there to rub at the shoulder. He uncomfortable.
“Miss, I hardly think fixing a dislocated shoulder requires you to tear your clothes off,” Obi joked, dropping his voice to a lower range. It was gravely and seductive, the voice he always used to get a rise out of her.
A flush worked its way up her cheeks, as it always did when he used that raspy growl voice. “I need to make a sling,” she said, voice too quiet to be inconspicuous. She continued to work, adjusting and re-adjusting the fabric until his shoulder was appropriately supported.
“You should wear the sling for a few weeks but I know you better than to assume you'll follow that advice.” She said, relaxing back to admire her handiwork. Pretty good for minimal equipment. “Just try to keep it on for the night. Possibly tomorrow as well, depending on how persistent the storm intends to be.”
Obi leaned back, laying back on the seat of the couch and stretching out as much as he could with her by his legs.
Shirayuki stood and moved to where his head was, not quite reaching the arm to be able to use it as a pillow. She could feel his eyes following her, a silent question as to what she was doing.
He lifted his head and shoulders so she could sit. Once she was settled, he laid back slowly so his head rested in her lap. He turned onto his side carefully to avoid jostling his arm too much.
A long, heavy silence fell between them as they watched and listened as the fire danced and crackled in front of them. The warmth, finally permeating the room, began to wash away the remaining cold in Shirayuki’s bones.
“Obi,” Shirayuki chanced, voice quiet with hesitation. “Where are we, exactly?” She asked as she ran her fingers along his scalp, scratching lightly.
Lyrias evenings had seen this position enough for her to know he liked his head massaged. The only thing they were missing was Ryuu working late at the desk in Shirayuki's rooms and Suzu and Yuzuri teasing each other while they debated something that had no impact on anything except their own personal pride.
She smiled at the thought. They'd be home soon, weather permitting. She missed their friends and they'd been gone from Lyrias for so long already.
“The grounds of a nobleman unfortunate enough to have been found with his hands in too many of the wrong people's cookie jars,” Obi supplied quietly. Not an actual explanation but it was certainly informative.
He looked peaceful, face relaxed and eyes closed, but there was a shadow lurking under his words. She recognized it as a past trauma. Old enough that he probably wouldn't even recognize it as such, let alone admit to it having an impact on him.
“What happened here,” she wondered out loud. It was more out of her own thoughts than expecting of an answer. She startled when he actually supplied one.
Two words. Cut straight through her. A young, smiling couple. Two beautiful children. A charred and broken home. Blood stains.
“A coup.”
He said it so evenly, so matter-of-fact. But he knew the place well. And those eyes. She was right in her assessment. She had to be. The pieces fit together perfectly, like a morbid puzzle.
“Obi?”
“Yes, miss,” he responded, sounding sleepy but still nearly purring as she continued her ministrations on his scalp.
A pang of hurt and regret surged through her at the question she could feel pushing it's way up. She didn't want to continue pressing him for knowledge he obviously held but she needed to know if she was right.
“The woman's eyes, Obi.”
His eyes opened slowly. Regret, sadness, and some other untraceable emotion simmered in the depths of molten amber as they shifted in the light of the fire. He was beautiful in the firelight, painted in a yellow glow that made every curve of his cheeks and strong lines of his jaw both softer and sharper at once. It suited him.
He was soft with her but had sharp edges that showed when he felt Shirayuki was being threatened. He was her snuggle partner on frigid Lyrias nights, a man she knew would keep her safe at any cost. But he was a hardened killer as well, a once-assassin turned military-man who rose from nothing to a knight of the highest caliber.
He let out a long, almost broken sigh. A suffering sound that served to worsen the feeling of sickness making her stomach churn. Guilt would be her bedfellow this evening. She shouldn't have pried. It was unfair to Obi and he'd done nothing to deserve such abismal treatment from someone he calls a friend.
“I know... I have my mom's eyes,” he turned to look at her then. His face was placid, like the horrors that had obviously happened here hadn't been part of his past, a history he had hidden from everyone.
She didn't fault him for keeping the secret but she was filled with an urge to know more. It was rare to have even a glimpse into Obi's life before he came to Wistal. Learning this much at one time was unheard of.
He continued to watch her as she shifted her hand to trace her fingers over his face, much in the same way she had touched the face of the young boy in the painting- his face in the painting.
She ran her thumb along the bone of his cheek and his eyes closed in a slow blink. “Do you,” she started, but cut off with a quick inhale, second-guessing whether or not to press on. The curious learner inside her mind won out and she pressed on, “Do you want to talk about it?”
She was intrigued and talking it out sometimes helped but she was only willing to learn what he was willing to tell. She opened the door of conversation for him, it was up to him whether he wanted to walk through it or not.
He sighed heavily, breath blowing her hair softly. “No, not really. But, for you, I will.”
He smiled, weak and exhausted, like the emotional lifting of this much baggage was too daunting to even think about, let alone unpack. He turned fully, so he was laying on his back looking up at her. He tucked her hair behind her ear with the hand of his good arm.
“My father was a good father from what I can remember. But he wasn't a good man.”
Shirayuki dragged her fingers up from his cheek and back through his hair so she was working his scalp again. She would give him time and what comforts she could manage for him if that's what he needed.
“He was involved with bad people. He stockpiled wealth but he was always willing to step on the little guy to do it. He was unjust too those he ruled over and was expected to protect. Eventually, they got tired of it.”
Before she could stop herself, her fingers fisted in the short bristles of his hair and she pulled herself down to him. She placed a soft kiss to his forehead and lingered there a second or two longer than could be considered just friendly or supportive.
Her eyes pulsed wide when she realized what she'd done and she sat back up, spine ramrod straight and heart hammering faster than Whinny’s hoofbeats as she had sprinted to get them all to safety. She flushed a far deeper shade of pink than she had in a long time and her face felt hot enough to combust. At least there would be more light to see with if she did.
Obi, for his part, seemed equally surprised. It may have been a trick of the firelight, but it seemed as though his cheeks were bordering on rosy as well. Instead of pressing her for an answer as to what had just transpired between them, he broke the silence by continuing on with his tale even though it was probably difficult for him. As expressive as Obi was, he was also quite adept at hiding emotions.
“The people of the land revolted under the leadership of the more distasteful business partners my father had. They stormed the house… I don't really remember all that much. My mother and sister were executed first. I remember that. They had hid in the secret room off the cloak closet in the hall with me. My sister cried and they found us. Father and I were forced to watch. Then they killed my father. I was taken.”
His eyes were far away. He was physically here in his childhood home, but his mind was trapped in the time of a memory over two decades old.
He didn't have to continue. She knew enough to guess the rest.
This was how he became a child of the underground. An orphan doomed to be forgotten and used as a tool to help others further their own nefarious plans. A vicious cycle with no real winner coming out on top.
“What better way to insult a nobleman, really? You keep his son alive and force him into a life of servitude, carrying out tasks similar to what the noble himself had used others for.”
He was so nonchalant about what had happened. Sure, years upon years between then and now had probably softened the edges of the trauma but it was amazing how removed he had become from it. He could have been telling the story of someone else's family for how detached from it he appeared. Probably some sort of survival mechanism.
The thought of a boy, lost in the turbulent seas of circumstance. Innocence sucked into a life in the shadiness of the criminal underworld.
Obi was a good man. One who deserved so much more and so much better than he had received. He was loyal, loving, smart, and always amazing. He deserved to have the world laid out at his feet not ripped out from under him. Especially as a child that young.
A small drop of water appeared on his cheek, forcing Shirayuki to realize she was crying but also pulling him back to the present.
A place where he was safe. Loved. Cherished deeply by those around him.
His eyes shifted visibly, working their way through time to return himself to the present. A place where he was loved and laying in the lap of his best friend.
He ran the thumb of his only free hand along each of her cheeks, drying the salty tears. “It was a long time ago, Miss. Only a few months after that painting was made, I think. I barely remember it.”
A lie. His first real lie to her. He joked but never lied. He remembered it well enough and she knew it. The fact that he was willing to lie to cover up the hurt broke open the dam and the tears cascaded over the rim of her eyelashes in force.
“But you were so young,” Shirayuki choked out over several sobs. “No child deserves that. What your father did wasn't your fault.”
“Fault is irrelevant when political machinations are concerned. You know that as well as I, Miss.” Despite the heaviness in the air around them, he appeared lighter, as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
“I have no regrets and I do not wonder what my life would have been.” Shirayuki kept her eyes closed as he talked- not that she could have said when it was she had closed them- but his voice was stronger, filled with an edge of unquestionable conviction.
“That path that was chosen for me when I was barely old enough to talk was the path that led me here. It's the path that led me to you.”

The Hottest Superhero Outfits (Batfam)
I only had one favourite superhero suit for a while but recently I gained another one. This new one that I’ve finally experienced in the pages of a comic book is so stunning that I feel like I have to make a post gushing about it ASAP.
Also because when the sun comes up later today I’m hitting town to get his Funko Pop.
Between the drafting of this post and its publishing I went out and bought the Pop!
2. Arkham Knight (Arkham Knight)
Note: I never played the game. Never had the console. I checked him out initially because of Honest Game Trailers and...
Pros:
Metallic sheen giving off a strong cyberpunk feel
Thick armor padding looks intimidating
Small, triangular, metallic plate Bat ears
Placement of Bat ears
White militaristic font logo “A” for Arkham, chest emblem reminiscent of wings/a caped crusader
Cool name
(Jason Todd’s) tragic origin and fascinating conflict with Batman
Becoming part of actual comics canon with Detective Comics
Cons:
Not so good color matching between the blue tint of the helmet/eyes and the red-white camouflage bodysuit peeking out from under the leather straps
Gotta pick one. Blue? Or red? Not both, unfortunately. Plus he has a black and white color scheme going as well
Verdict: Jason Personalized-Mecha-Suit-Overkill Todd
My fascination with the Arkham Knight’s appearance got me keen on Jason Tood, which was compounded by Curran Walters’ performance in DCU Titans and then led to current, full-blown Batman comic reading.
The upcoming Detective Comics’ one isn’t going to be Jason but what if, just hear me out, whoever it is dies/leaves behind the suit which Todd then scraps together with his current stuff to create a new suit for himself?
1. Red Robin (New 52)
The first I saw this outfit was through the Funko Pop figurine making rounds on social media. I was drawn to it then, but it wasn’t until I read Robin War and Batman & Robin Eternal that I was introduced to Tim while he was wearing it.
Pros:
Unique and instantly recognizable colors - red, black and yellow
Doesn’t look as childish as the classic costumes that had green
His cape is the prettiest thing I have ever seen on a superhero
Half the length of traditional capes
So less likely to slip on or trip over, doesn’t get in the way of fighting
Gives off light and airy impression
Long tips have a slight inwards curl
Moves like wings, as dependent on the momentum of his actions
Cuts a sharp and distinctive silhouette when he sails between buildings/drops to the ground
As compared to Batman, who just looks like a big black scary shape
Genuinely draws inspiration from birds/wings for the cape
Speaks of the amount of care its owner put into the design
Gave me respect for the bird inspiration that the many bird-themed superheroes take from Mother Nature as a whole
Cons:
Why the hell isn’t this in Rebirth??
Verdict: Tim Vigilante-Style-Designer Drake
I still don’t really have a favourite Robin yet, but if he would put this back on I just might. This marks the first time I’ve ever thought of a superhero outfit as pretty.
Tumblr media
Anyway I own this baby now. Out of the five Pops that I have (once you start you seriously can’t stop) he’s really my favourite to look at. The most of his figurine is matte, but his staff has a “metallic” effect and his gloves and boots are glossy!
Other honorable mentions:
Damian Wayne’s Robin outfit especially with the hood up
Agent 37 because Dick Grayson’s face is always fully visible
And Deathstroke’s always perfect, iconic, masculine, intimidating, well-coordinated, armor-plated, thicc, guns plus swords look
