Convergent Fakemon: Cushell and Yolkwak
The latest Pokémon has a few new species that play with the idea of convergent evolution so I thought about drawing a few. These are a reference to the theory that Cubone is the result of a baby Kangaskhan whose mother died. They also reference this other fakemon I made called Pengusquen.
Cushell (Ice): Superficially resembling Cubone, Cushell is a penguin Pokémon that was born alone from an egg abandoned in the cold. They still retain an attachment to their eggs which they now wear like helmets. They wield a crude weapon made from the frozen leftover yolk from their eggs. They are known to be delinquents due to their lack of parental care but long for companionship.
Yolkwak (Ice): Superficially resembling Marowak, Yolkwak has made peace with their lot in life and has become an accomplished hunter. They have refined their crude ice shard blade into a great throwing spear. However, they still have not quite given up on their childhood attachments and continue to wear their eggshell helmets like a security blanket.

wait, I thought baby Kangaskhan whose mother's die turn into cubone
Yes and no!
In Bell's case, she was found and taken into custody before anything could happen.
For the longest time, cubone being baby kangaskhan was only just a theory, as we've never seen a marowak reproduce, but about... ten years ago? There was trail cam footage of a cubone forming.
(That being said, I do NOT recommend looking up that footage if you're sensitive to death, it's deeply upsetting to watch)
After a mother kangaskhan passes away, given a little time, she will "fuse" with the baby in a process very similar to evolving. This fusion ends with cubone wearing their mother's skull and carrying one of her bones.
Not long after that, we got our second footage clip of a baby kangaskhan getting severely injured and the mother fusing with the baby into a cubone.
There's a lot of theories, but I'd like to believe it's because a mother's love never dies, and this is how she protects her baby after she's gone.
"Some cubones are male, and kangaskhan are all female" you might say, but that's another yes and no!
For some reason we don't quite understand, male kangaskhan are just... not built to last. They're VERY rarely born in the first place, and when they are, they won't live for long. A mother who births a male kangaskhan is fated to give herself up so that he won't die :(

hey cool kid! Uhhhh long time fan first time caller, whats the Lore™ on ur fave pokemon? (lore feels vague and broad as hell, so if u come up w different interpretations pick whichever one u feel the most like talking about) 🙏
CUBONE/ALOLAN MAROWAK!!!
I interpreted this as the pokedex entries and also the theories behind em! Cubone wearing the skull of its mother is so SAD!!!! Same with Alolan Marowak but it’s also kinda metal bc the mom’s spirit is the fire that it uses!!!!!
I’m also a fan of the Cubone/Kangaskhan theory where cubones are actually just baby kangaskhans that lose their moms :((((
These pokemon also remind me of Jessie/Miyamoto and the reason why in every pokemon game i play I have a cubone or alolan marowak named musashi or a kangaskhan named miyamoto hahaha

#104 Cubone+ A fun fact!
Tumblr media
So this lights up for some reason, but what’s really cool is what the bootlegger did under the skull.
Tumblr media
“Cubone is baby Kangaskhan” isn’t really much of a theory anymore since Kangaskhan didn’t exist and instead there was a third Marowak evolution. One that’s holding a baby. A baby that kind of looks like baby Kangaskhan.
Tumblr media
For some reason it was cut and replaced with Kangaskhan instead.
If it actually looked good I’d want this bootleg for this reason alone.

New Pokemon... Technically.
I was in a mood to do a sprite but PayPal is giving my commissioner problems so I decided to take the moment to do one for myself.
Tumblr media
It’s baby Kangaskhan! Or in this case, “Joroo.” (Joey/Kangaroo. Also the baby kangaroo in Winnie The Pooh is called “Roo.”)
The reason for this Pokemon is that in the BETA of the first gen, there was going to be a third evolution for Marowak instead of Kangaskhan called “Guardia.” We only have the back sprite of it, buuut...
Tumblr media
See what’s in it’s arms? A baby that looks suspiciously like baby Kangaskhan.
So basically, this entire time that theory was as true as it can get while at the same time still not completely true.
I wanted to do something that relates to this in my game somehow. It actually took me a little while to figure everything out. I’m still probably not done with it, but I’ll explain why in a little bit.
Originally, I was going to have the evolution line like this,
Tumblr media
But there was a pretty big balancing issue. Even if I don’t have Mega Kangaskhan’s stone available in the game at all, poor Cubone and Marowak would be ignored because of Kanga’s base stats equaling up to 65 more than Marowak’s base stat total, and there’s only one evolution to get to Kangaskhan where there are two to get to Marowak.
So, until (assuming I will) make a Mega Marowak available in the game, male Kangaskhan won’t exist and the evolutionary line will look more like this.
Tumblr media
Okay so it says “Happiness Female Only” but I guess that’s not actually a thing, and I’m not exactly sure how to do that. I think I know how, but again it will (probably) change eventually anyway, so for now it’s actually going to evolve into a Kangaskhan when it’s at level 28, but only if it’s female.
And Joroo will only have a 11.9% chance of being female. At least for the time being. Once (if) I make Mega Marowak (I’d like it to be inspired by Guardia, but the differences between Marowak and Guardia aren’t big if you take away the baby) I’ll go insane and change it to what I original was going to have it as, with a 50% chance of getting either gender. And unfortunately (for the moment anyway) I have only one detail to add to a Mega Marowak and that idea alone doesn’t justify a Mega.
Though until this, Joroo may change genders once it evolves. But we still love it all the same~
Also I changed the shiny form of some Pokemon. Specifically the ones that looked too much like their original. For most I just played with the hue on FireAlpaca, but for some I manually recolored them myself. I guess I forgot that I did that for Kangaskhan, but that helped me decide on what color should be the shiny form of Joroo.
Also also, I’ll be replacing Cubone with Joroo in the Safari Zone. And in one or two other places probably.

honestly i really like the theory that cubone and marowak were initially supposed to be pre evolutions to kangaskhan. ive always felt like kangaskhan was incomplete because the baby looked so much like a pre evolution but with the cubone theory it fits together a lot more

Pokemon of the Week - Kangaskhan
Kangaskhan is a very good first generation pokemon.  I mean, it’s brown, and normal type, which is not something I like.  But it is cute, and big and strong.  It is solid and has good stats.  It learns plenty of good moves, and has a good move pool of extra moves it can learn.
It has a mega evolution that makes it simply amazing.  It is very powerful.  And the baby is so cute!  I have always wondered about the baby as they seem to have it as soon as their egg hatches, but when does the baby grow up?  What does it become?  I’ve seen a theory that it is related to Cubone and Marowak, and that looks like it could have been a likely plan.
If you’re interested in this maternal pokemon, please follow the link through to Serebii.net.  They have a write up of how to use it in competitive play.  Always have a couple good ideas there.

gen 1 Pokemon proto?
so presuming that they didn’t get hookwinked and it’s all a scam (which is a possibility, but they’re saying it checks out, so there’s a more than even chance it’s legit), check this out
the story goes, the same team that found the Spaceworld Pokemon Gold/Silver proto and showed us all those scrapped pokemon was approached by someone who said they had gen 1 prototypes, which if true is fucking huge because i’ve always been fascinated by the leftover pokemon data that was kind of but not entirely stripped out of RBY. the guy flat-out refused to allow a ROM dump on account of the possibility of getting in trouble/being one of those greedy collector types who’s only in it for the dosh (choose one), but they did send the team a bunch of back sprites of beta pokemon, as well as some data regarding attacks, maps, and trainer battles
then for whatever reason, they stopped responding
a ROM hack to restore the cut content is underway, in the meantime check out these back sprites, because for whatever reason the leaker didn’t send any front ones. some highlights:
if you’ve ever wondered why Blastoise’s design is so drastically different from Squirtle and Wartortle, it’s because Blastoise wasn’t originally meant to be part of the Squirtle line. not only is there the original evo for Wartortle (which makes a lot more sense design-wise, tbh) but there’s a pre-evo for Blastoise
remember that round electric tiger from the Spaceworld GS proto? he was meant to be in gen 1. so were the pre-evos of Meowth, Vulpix, and Ponyta. Zubat was originally the middle of its line, and Psyduck had three stages before being cut down to two. there’s also a weird transition evo between Magnemite and Magneton
there was a yeti pokemon who was either a male counterpart to Jynx or an ice-type counterpart to Magmar and Electabuzz
fuckin’ GOROCHU
remember those theories a while back, where Venomoth and Butterfree were switched, or Dragonite and Gyarados were switched? well that’s debunked, but maybe you remember the one where Cubone is a baby Kangaskhan? myth fucking confirmed, check out that prototype Marowak evolution
