it's pretty wild to me that people don't see that aang running off to save katara in CoD is his luke in empire strikes back moment, where he runs headlong into his want and attachment and he's narratively punished for doing so and not learning his lesson - aang runs after katara despite guru pathik's warning, like luke runs after leia and han from yoda on dagobah despite yoda's warning; similarly, as a result, things go to hell in ba sing se like they do on bespin - aang enters the avatar state before he's ready and gets killed, and ba sing se falls to the fire nation, luke fights vader before he's ready, loses a hand, and symbolically commits suicide after vader tells him he's luke's father.

the difference between their character arcs is that george lucas and co. actually went thru with luke's hero's journey and understood the fundamental difference between attachment and love, whereas I don't think bryke understood this difference and then dropped this from aang's arc pretty much completely and replaced it with aang digging in his heels into his want and attachment and he gets rewarded with energy bending from a lion turtle, the avatar state from a random pointy rock, and his forever girl from the self-indulgent white men that couldn't bring themselves to give their hero a compelling character arc that meant he might not have gotten everything he wanted at the end.

#the wasted potential of aang's arc gets to me so bad #the narrative and thematic set up is entirely there and they just shove it in the bin lmao #it especially irks as someone raised buddhist and dealing with writers that invoke these themes out of a fascination #with the religion and philosophy but then a complete unwillingess to actually commit to what those themes require of the character arcs #anyway sorry to say it #but zuko's arc does a better job embodying buddhist themes than aang's does in the end #despite all misappropriated aesthetics to the contrary #aang critical #but its really the writing like i LIKE aang i love his potential i hate how self indulgently he's written by the end of the show #atla critical #meta*#holly talks bs #also yes it would've been better narratively for aang katara zuko to the go the way of luke leia han #even if katara couldn't have been revealed as aang's surprise secret twin lmao #the thematic conceit of the triangle is the same in that luke and aang get over their infatuation with the first pretty girl he sees #and becomes the hero he needs to be #meanwhile hanleia and zutara are saving each other and being cool and kissing #anyway

Based on this self indulgent post I wrote the other day, about a Kuro AU feauturing 5 years old Ciel and a new demon dad who's doing his best. Suddenly this little scene popped into my mind, then I remembered my talented fren @grelleswife's Dadbastian fanfic The Wolf (link here!) so I guess that, even though it's not exactly the same setting, I must have gotten subconsciously inspired by it 😅

During his days in the cult all little Ciel could do was try to survive the best way his young mind could think about, and when he had just been rescued by the demon he was weak and sickly, barely alive even, and then pretty much catatonic. Once the dust has settled, however, the realization that his family won't come back dawns on him, and he starts having nightmares about monsters with deformed faces that laugh while hurting him. Moreover, even though he's supposed to be back at his house the place doesn't feel too familiar. The first night the demon hears the child screaming and crying, they try to comfort him as best as they can with the scanty knowledge they have about comforting children. After a while they have an idea, based on the partially burned portrait they found from which they could make out the shape of the family pet.

(You ain't foolin' anyone trash demon, you're starting to care about the smol).

When Ciel wakes up the next morning, he's still surrounded by the borzoi's slender but fluffly body. He yawns and rubs his eyes, and then sits up and just stares at the creature that looks so much like his late pet. "Good morning, child." the voice coming from the dog says, without really expecting an answer, "Did you sleep well?" After a pause, the child that up until this point hadn't spoken at all utters a single word, albeit almost in a whisper. "Hm? I am afraid I could not hear that. Come again?" Ciel lifts a little hand, points a finger at the animal and raises his voice a bit. "Sebastian." "Ah. Well, yes, I guess you can call me that from now on, if you so wish." the demon answers with a small nod, and Ciel could swear he sees his snout twist into a faint smile. Sebastian then sleeps on Ciel's bed, in the form of the soft borzoi, every night until the child is a little older and can be alone at night.

Tommy contemplates a big bottle of Orange Fanta in a supermarket aisle. His attention gets drawn to Benrey when he hears him call out "Tommy!" excitedly. Benrey holds out his precious find - a pair of orange-patterned socks - and grins: "nice, eh?"

Separate Scenario: Halfway through new year spring cleaning, Tommy whips out his phone, hit by sudden inspiration to look up rabbit-themed new year phrases fitting for the Rabbit Year. Meanwhile, Benrey, who is on dusting duty, finds a spider and promptly eats it. The house is decorated with Chinese New Year decorations, including a potted Pussy Willow plant, small lanterns atop the shoe cabinet, and a chinese "fu" (good fortune) wall hanging decor with a bunny face on it.

Separate Scenario: The Science Team, who were invited to celebrate the new year, lounge in Tommy's living room. Tommy's Golden Retriever, Sunkist, watches as Joshua, Gordon's son, hangs himself over the edge of the couch gleefully, his shirt riding up over his belly. Gordon keeps hold of one of his son's ankles to keep him from falling off while he chats with Bubby, the old man standing behind the couch with his weight leaned into the side of it and a hand on his hip. Benrey, wearing his orange-patterned socks, is slumped over half of the couch with a leg hanging over the back of the couch and the other over the armrest. The back of his head is pressed up against Gordon's back like a headrest as he snacks away at the chocolate coins from a plastic bowl on the coffee table next him. Apart from chocolate, there is also a container of pineapple tarts, a prosperity tray of goodies, and a couple of mandarin oranges on the table. Meanwhile, Darnold shows off a new potion in a test tube to Dr Coomer, who studies it curiously. Sasha, Darnold's Spore Launcher, sits politely in a front-facing baby carrier worn across Darnold's chest. As Tommy looks at his friends, he is hit with a sudden realisation. Wait, did I prepare enough? he panicks internally, thinking about the single red packet he'd prepared for Joshua, the only kid of the bunch. Per tradition, red packets are usually gifted to single family members and children. All of his friends are unmarried.
