Reader gives their friend/crush an Applin but YOU don't know the tradition-legend behind it.
Writer’s pick on who gets to deal with oblivious Reader! 👉😎👉 (Choose whichever Lad you wanna write for!)
∾ 【 Rouge Anon 】
I’m weak, I picked Piers.
-
-
You’ve lived in Galar for a few years, and in that time you became close to the dark type gym leader, Piers.
You two spent a lot of time together, you even met his little sister! Whom seemed to like you, often going to you with problems. As some of her issues Piers would’ve turned into a mama Blaziken.
He’s always been so kind to you, little rough around the edges, but he’s such a sweetheart.
So when you found what looked to be the worlds cutest Pokémon in the wild area, you just had to catch it and show him!
The Pokédex says it’s an Applin! And it’s so tiny! He’s going to love it, he’s always liked small cute things.
As much as he’d lead you to believe otherwise.
Hopefully you can catch him before his show!
You are just so excited to show him! You know he’s lived in Galar all his life, but you’re just so filled with energy now, and you want to share it with him!
And you caught him just in time!
“Piers! Piers!”
The lanky man looks to you, half smile on his face.
“Hey, what’s got you all excited?”
He won’t lie, it’s adorable seeing you look so joyful, how your eyes light up, how your smile threatens to split your face.
These last few years of being your friend made him realize that, he loves you, he desperately is.
But being your friend is enough, he doesn’t want to risk not having you in his life.
“You won’t believe it! I caught the smallest, cutest little thing!”
You pull out the pokeball, releasing the small Applin inside. You gesture to the apple Pokémon in pure joy.
Piers’s eyes widen at the sight of the small creature.
True it’s a little smaller than what they should be, looking up at him.
“I caught it for you! I thought it was the perfect for a little napping buddy for you.”
True most his Pokémon are much too big for his lap anymore, though they try.
You look at your friend, your smile still wide, but you’re growing confused. His face is slowly blooming in color, his cheeks going from pink to red the longer he stares at the Applin and you.
You were confessing to him!? Him! You could do so much better than him, yet you picked him?
“Piers?”
You jump in surprise when he hugs you, his arms keeping a firm grip around you as his face is buried in the crook of your neck.
You wrap your arms around his waist, hugging him back.
“Are you okay?” He must’ve had a rough day.
You can’t imagine how stressed he must be, if this is what made him emotional. You aren’t sure what made him upset but you’re glad your gift is making him happy.
Piers can feel his heart speeding up, he can’t believe you confessed to him.
“Hey…”
“Yeah, Piers?”
“Do you…do you maybe wanna grab some lunch after my set? Or maybe go to a café later.”
Is he asking you out? Your heart lurches in your throat, your face burning at the realization he’s asking you out.
You never thought he’d ask! You were fully prepared to ask him out, but he beat you to it!
You nuzzle your face into his neck, your fists clenching the back of his shirt.
“Yeah, I’d like that a lot.”
You can’t believe you landed a date with Piers!
He can’t believe you confessed to him in such a sappy way, he adores it.

PostwickShip Fic Ideas
So I beat the main game of Pokémon Sword this past weekend, and I have been COMPLETELY obsessed with this adorable ship — to the point where I have been writing down all these ideas for a fic for it, and I just really needed to put the words to paper (or google doc, I guess) and share them! @kuumamochi - here ya go!
So quick note, I changed their ages so she, Hop, Bede, and Marnie are all around 16 instead of 10-12, and I actually made an OC for this to use instead of the base Gloria/Yuuri, so first some little details about her!
OC: Elizabeth
Tumblr media
Called: Lizzie
Age: 16 (birthday - Spring)
Hair: long, caramel blonde; usually tied back into to twin braids with side-swept bangs
Eyes: large, round, icy blue eyes (get darker closer to the center)
Height: 4′11″
Weight: 115 lbs
Starter: Sobble  (nicknamed “Darcy”, like from Pride and Prejudice)
Likes: strawberries, hydrangeas, warm blankets, and a good book
Dislikes: meat (she’s vegetarian), scary stories, snow, and sports
Favorite Pokemon Types: Fairy and Grass
Typical Outfit/Style: knit beret, striped shirt, short skirt, hoodie, thigh-high socks, and ankle boots
Personality: shy, a bit oversensitive as a child, easily upset by harsh words or by bullies, slowly grows out of it and comes out of her shell as she grows up with  Hop; always felt like a “damsel in distress” when Hop would stand up to bullies for her, and wants to be the one to stand up for him for once; always thinks before opening her mouth, sometimes for too long and misses her chance to speak in a conversation
Family:
Mom: Sara
energetic, but soft-spoken; worked as a journalist in Hammerlocke for years before meeting Lizzie’s father, and moving to Postwick to become a mother and an online journalist
brown hair, blue eyes, 5′0″
Pokemon: Budew, Munchlax
Dad: Dimitri (deceased)
shy, very calm; prefered books to people in most cases; was working as a low-ranking police officer (alongside many cousins named Jenny) in Hammerlocke when he met Sara; later moved with her to Postwick and became a small-town detective
Died of illness when Lizzie was 7
blond hair, purple eyes, 6′0″
Pokemon: Pikachu “Zeus”
Aunt: Carol
Her late dad’s older sister
Lives in Ballonlea, working as a teacher
blonde hair, purple eyes, 5′4″
Pokemon: Cutiefly “Zipper”, Ponyta “Magi”, and Clefairy “Momo”
Grandpa: Phillip
Her mom’s dad
Former Dark-Type gym leader before Piers (his eldest grandchild)
Currently retired and living in Spikemuth
Pokemon: Obstagoon, Thievul, Grimmsnarl, Phantump, Skuntank
Cousins: Marnie and Piers
Their mother is Lizzie’s mom’s younger sister
She was also the Dark-Type gym leader for several years until Piers took over
History with Hop:
Grew up with Hop for as long as either can remember
It was always the two of them against the world
Hop protected her from bullies
Lizzie patched him up when things got “too real”
Always figured they’d be together forever, no matter what
Leon gave Hop his first Pokemon (Wooloo) right before he left on his Pokemon journey
Lizzie was a little jealous and wanted one too
Leon said he could catch her one, but then Hop one-upped him and said he’d find her a shiny Wooloo instead
Lizzie agreed to let Hop find one, and hasn’t tried to catch one until he finds her a shiny Wooloo
It’s been six years since this, and he’s still looking
Lizzie realized she had a crush on Hop when he came over to cheer her up after being stood up for a date at age 13
They watched Pokemon league matches while eating ice cream until they finally passed out on the floor at about 3am
Hop turned 16 first, and should have been the first to go on his Pokemon journey, but insisted on staying another six months until Lizzie’s birthday so that they could go on their journey together
Hop realizes he might have a crush on her right before they start their journey, when they both reach for the Wishing Stones
He sees her eyes light up in the stones’ glow, and gets the “oh no, emotions” feeling in his gut
Their Journey Begins:
Lizzie gets her Sobble because it reminds her of her childhood self
She wants to be for Sobble what Hop was for her
She names him Darcy, after the character in her favorite book
Hop is only a little jealous she named her first Pokemon after the love interest to the character that shares her name (No, Liz, I didn’t read it, you just talk about it all the time and I can’t escape it!)
In the Slumbering Weald, they get separated in the fog, and have to try and find each other as well as the lost Wooloo
They don’t see the sword or shield Pokemon until they find each other again, holding hands to not get lost again
They’re still holding hands when they wake up after passing out in the fog
Lizzie’s second Pokemon and Hop’s third Pokemon are a pair of Rookidee, who they help out and that choose to stay with them
The two bird Pokemon bicker like an old married couple half the  time they’re together, but cuddle and coo at each other and hate to be apart for too long
Hop, oblivious: “Look, they’re just like us! Best friends who can’t be kept apart!”
Lizzie: *facepalm*
They travel together all the way to Motosoke, camping together in the Wild Area
Lizzie teaches Hop how to cook, so as not to starve or poison any of his Pokemon or himself
His Pokemon are forever grateful
After opening ceremonies, they take on different gyms
Lizzie starts with Milo’s, while Hop takes on Nessa’s first, then they switch and meet back up in Motosoke for Kabu’s badge challenge
This starts as the longest either of them have ever been apart, and they’re both nervous while putting on a brave front
Just about every battle they’ve ever had has either ended in a draw, or been cut off by something
They don’t find out who is the “stronger trainer” of the two until the Semi-Finals
***
I think I’m gonna stop here for now, let me know if anyone wants to see more! I’ll post a link if I end up writing a whole drawn-out fic for this concept!
Note: please ignore any spelling/grammar errors, I used my computer to type these and it’s kind of shit.

Chapter 3 - Plead Your Case
Andrew and I landed in LA around 10am. Between the time difference, and the stops and layovers, i’d had to wake up at 4 in the morning just so that we could be at the airport in time to leave. I had gotten a few hours of sleep on the plane, but I was still feeling a bit groggy. The only thing keeping me going at this point was my 5th coffee, and the fact that I was meeting Tegan and Sara in only 2 hours. We made it through the baggage claim, and a few minutes later we were met by none other than Piers himself. Andrew had told me that Piers was at my show last night, which led me to assume he had taken the first flight out here just to be able to meet us and be there for the introductions. I also assumed he was there to work out some kind of contract with Andrew, but I couldn’t be sure. We loaded our luggage and my gear into a black SUV, and within minutes we were on our way to the hotel we would be staying at for a few days while an apartment was rented for Andrew and I. At this point I was beginning to get nervous. I was meeting my idols today, people I had admired for years, listened to their music, and gone to countless shows. The thought that I was in a band with them hadn’t sunk in yet, but I knew it would only be a matter of time before reality hit.
We arrived at the hotel, and I realized I must’ve blacked out during the drive, because it felt like it took two seconds. We went up to our rooms, showered and changed clothes, then Andrew and I met in the hall before heading down. At this point I was shaking and he had to take the guitar case from me.
“Do I look ok?” He looked me over and nodded, grinning. I had decided to go with a maroon button down shirt, black denim skinny jeans, and my favorite grey converse. This wasn’t my usual job interview, where i’d typically dress a little more feminine, and I figured it would be a bit casual anyways as we were meeting at Tegan’s house. I still wanted to look good though.
The drive to Tegan’s apartment seemed to take forever, and when we finally pulled up my nerves were at an all time high. Piers had already let them know we were on our way, and I let him go up first while I trailed behind Andrew. I could hear voices down the hall, as I watched Piers step into an apartment. Tegan’s laughter traveled down towards me and my nerves couldn’t decide whether they wanted to get worse, or go away. Piers was laughing as I stepped up to the door with Andrew.
“Starting early, Tegan?” Piers grinned, motioning for us both to enter the apartment. Tegan and Sara stood in the entryway. Tegan was holding a drink, grinning at us as we walked in. They were both dressed casually, in t-shirts and skinny jeans, though Tegan had on a pair of colorful socks unlike Sara. Sara stood next to her sister, a serious expression on her face and her arms folded over her chest until she reached out to shake Andrews hand.
Tegan laughed again, handing a drink to Piers.
“Celebrating! I’ve waited years to get another girl in the band, and here she is.” Tegan winked at me, and my nerves turned into strange butterflies centering themselves in my chest. I looked to Sara, who had just stretched her hand out to me. I put my bag down quickly, shaking her hand.
“Thank you for meeting with us today, and for hosting us here. It’s an honor, really.” Tegan grinned wider, and I couldn’t help but wonder what she was drinking. Sara perked up a bit, but simply motioned us forward and helped with the gear. Tegan set her drink down and shook my hand as soon as mine were free.
“Of course! Make yourselves comfortable! I can fix you both a drink and we can sit down and talk before we get everything set up. I know you’ve both traveled quite a ways to get here.”
Andrew and I took a seat, looking at each other with the same amazed expression. I’ll admit, we fangirled for a split second while we were left alone, and when I looked up Tegan was smirking at me. I blushed, sitting back on my seat as Andrew giggled. I can’t recall ever hearing him giggle, but he was loving this too much. Tegan sat down next to me, her thigh touching mine as she handed me an amber colored drink in a small glass, the same thing she’d been drinking since we walked in. She took a sip of her own and winked at me as I lifted my glass and took a drink, laughing as I pulled it away. Andrew looked at me confused and I turned to Tegan.
“Apple juice? You’ve been drinking apple juice this whole time?”
Her brown eyes locked onto mine and I could see the amusement she felt very clearly.
“I think it’s fun to do the unexpected, plus it loosened you up without having to give you alcohol, which is always a bonus.” She smiled at me and turned to Sara, who had just reappeared with Piers in tow. They took their seats and I could see that it was time for business. Piers sat forward, looking at Andrew as he spoke.
“You’ve already seen the paperwork, so you already know the pay, and the technical details and legal aspects of all of this. Since you’ve already stated you’re in agreement with all of that, the only things that need to be decided are the living situation, and the duration that you’ll be with us, Mel. I’ve spoken with the girls’ other managers, and we all agree that as long as the girls have no problem with it, you’ll share a bus with them, since the rest of the band members and full time crew are male. In the past, the band as a whole have shared a bus, so this wasn’t an issue, but since there will be an extra bus we’ve decided to do it this way.” He turned to Tegan and Sara to get their reactions.
“You know i’m fine with it Piers, and Sara already said it was fine pending full agreement at the end of this.” Tegan glanced at me, probably wondering if i’d take offense at Sara’s response. The idea of sharing a bus with just Tegan and Sara was a bit nerve wracking. Then again, it was just about every fan's dream come true.
“I’m completely fine with whatever arrangement is decided. It makes no difference to me where I sleep, as long as I get a hot shower.” Tegan laughed, and Piers smiled, glad that was at least decided. Piers marked something in his paperwork and continued.
“So the tour starts in September, with three or four shows a week, and you’ll be with us until at least the end of October, where Shaun will resume his position. Any festival dates before the tour have already been arranged, so you will be staying here in LA to practice. Since we’re only a few days away from August, you’ll be meeting with Tegan and Sara at least 6 days a week for practice, with one day off. All of you can discuss which days you take off, it doesn’t have to be set.” He rustled through his papers looking for something.
“Ah, okay. In the event that Shaun can’t continue at the designated date, do you agree to continue with the band until he can rejoin the band himself?” Andrew looked at me, nodding slightly in a way that said he knew about this and approved.
“I’m fine with that. However long you need me for is fine.”
“Good! Then please sign here, and here.” I quickly signed and he passed a copy to Andrew.
“Alright ladies, go ahead.” Piers sat back looking relieved, and Sara turned to me.
“My biggest concern about this is that we don’t know you, don’t know anything about you, and have heard nothing from you musically. This was Shaun’s decision, and he didn’t include us in anything.”
Ah. So this explained Sara’s attitude towards me. She was all business right now, but I could tell that she knew her words had affected me a bit.
“We trust Shaun’s decision. He’s our friend, and a great bass player, but this is OUR band, OUR music. This is the first decision we didn’t have a hand in, and i’m not used to that. So what I need from you is for you to be honest, just tell me about yourself, and answer any questions we have.” Her expression was hard to read, but I had a feeling this had been eating her up for a while. Though I hadn’t known it, I had been a wild card in their plans for weeks now, and they were just now getting to find out what that wild card would do. The fact that they had no decision in this sort of hurt. I had been under the impression that Shaun had recommended me to them, and they’d said yes. I had to look at the positive side though, which was that I was here and i’d been offered the position no matter what the circumstances were.
“I’ll answer anything you want, within reason of course. We can start with the basics. I’m Melanie Taylor, i’m 25. I currently work as a manager at a publishing company. I have a bachelor's degree from USC, the one in South Carolina, and I live in Greenville. I’m in a band with my best friend, Claire, though we mostly just play clubs and bars and the occasional event. I’ve played bass since I was 14…. What else do you want to know?”
Tegan sat forward, cutting off her sister.
“Are you a fan? Have you even heard the discography you’re going to be playing?”
I blushed. What a question….. Tegan smirked again, already guessing my answer.
“I’ve been a fan since about 2001. I can play any song of yours that you want on bass, some on guitar and even keyboard. I can sing backup, but I wouldn’t call myself a great singer honestly.”
Sara looked impressed, and Tegan sat back, letting her twin take the lead again.
“We have rules for people who go on tour with us. No drugs, at all, at any time. If a fan tries to give them to you, don’t accept it. It sends the wrong message about our band. If we catch you with drugs, you’re out. We don’t mind drinking, but there’s a time and place for it, and alcohol won’t be kept on the busses.”
I agreed to everything, explaining it wouldn’t be a problem since I didn’t do any drugs and I’m not particularly big on drinking anyways. Things calmed down and at some point we just started having a normal conversation. We talked about shared interests, Sara’s love of Scrabble and how I promised i’d beat her at least once before I left tour. We talked about the music we all loved, and Sara asked some generic interview questions. “Why do you want this job?”, “Why do you think you were picked for this position in the band?” leaving Tegan to butt in jokingly and ask “Where do you see yourself in ten years?” and then proceed to start giggling. Emy arrived not long after we’d gotten comfortable, and she was as sweet as i’d always pictured. Watching Sara and Emy in person was much different than what they showed the public, and it was sickeningly sweet. Hours passed, Piers and Andrew left, presumably to finish paperwork, Tegan made actual drinks, and we all forgot about the fact that I was supposed to play for them. During a particularly interesting retelling of a story involving a crew member on tour, Sara remembered another rule. I was sitting on the couch with Tegan, and Sara and Emy were sort of cuddled together on the love seat across from us.
“One of the biggest rules is that you can’t bring girls onto the bus.” I laughed, knowing that also wouldn’t be an issue.
“No worries there. I’m not interested in any of that.” Sara nodded, accepting my answer, but Tegan sat forward and blurted out “Why? Are you seeing someone?”

Chapter(s) & Status: One-shot & complete
Summary: "How did you manage to never run into him? He’s always helping with stuff and he’s even been at the institute about three weeks ago to strengthen the wards against further attacks from Valentine,” she replied and looked at her brother incredulously. Alexander scrunched up his nose and shrugged.“Well, maybe I have better things to do than waiting around to watch some overrated warlock do magic tricks,” he commented a little defensively but it was the truth. He always had something to do and even when they were not out demon hunting, he had either paperwork to do or train.“Pardon me, but I’m not just some overrated warlock. I’m the High Warlock of Brooklyn and that title is well deserved, if I may say so. And I’m appalled that you refer to my magic as petty tricks. You Nephilim always act to high and mighty, yet you’re constantly in need of some tricks from overrated warlocks to help you out of some unnecessary dilemma,” a foreign voice interjected and Alec whirled around, fingers instinctively curling around his bow to be ready to attack if need be. The owner of the voice was not what Alexander had expected, to be honest.

To Mother | Self-Para
“Who’s my sweet, sweet boy?” He smiles, a wide grin pulling at his lips as his mother ruffles his hair. She takes his hand and presses it against her distended belly. Vaguely, he can feel a soft thump against his palm. “Say hello to your brother and sister.” She smiles warmly at him, and his eyes widen in wonder. Some of his friends have siblings, and it seems like a good thing, something to celebrate, something to be happy over. “You’re going to be a big brother.” At the happiness shining from his mother’s eyes, Jin Goo’s eyes curve into crescents of their own and a bubbly laugh breaks out in the kitchen where they stand. “What should we name your brother and sister?”
-
She’s holding a bundle in her arms, one twin in each arm, and Jin Goo rocks onto his tiptoes to catch a sight of his new siblings, eyes practically sparkling in anticipation. She puts the twins into their cradle and lifts him up to stand on the edge of the crib so he can get a better view. Her arms wrap around him, also making sure he won’t fall. “Aren’t they pretty?” she whispers in his ear. He can hear the exhaustion in his mother voice, but she also sounds happy and content. He nods with a wide smile, gazing at the two babies sleeping side by side. He feels the soft lips of his mother grazing the top of his head as he stares. transfixed by the slight rise and fall of the babies’ chests. “You love them, too, don’t you?” Jin Goo nods vigorously, and smiles when he hears his mother’s warm laugh behind him, her warm arms surrounding him.
-
His father gets laid-off nine months later. Despite his best efforts, he doesn’t find another job. Meals get gradually smaller, his mother’s smile gets more and more strained. Six months after being laid-off, his father turns to drinking to relieve his anguish. It takes a few weeks, but eventually when he sees the bottle, Jin Goo learns to avoid the man who used to laugh deeply and play hide-and-seek with him. The first time his father lays a hand on his mother, Jin Goo is sleeping, but the raised voices wake him. When the man sobers in the morning, there are tears and apologies from two of the people Jin Goo loves most in the world. His father begs his mother not to leave, that he won’t ever do it again. A few days pass and Jin Goo sees a bottle on the coffee table, one that wasn’t there the day before. His father never sobers again. Thing get worse. Jin Goo’s mother grabs him by the arms one day, her hair frazzled and eyes wide with terror. “Protect your brother and sister,” she urges him, “Promise me you’ll protect them no matter what!” Jin Goo can only nod dumbly. He thinks she means to protect them from the outside world, from strangers. After all, he has never connected the black eyes and bruises his mother sports to his drunken father.
-
His brother and sister are crying. He’s holding onto them tightly, close to him. His father holds a half empty bottle in one hand and a kitchen knife in the other, his eyes wild and unfocused. Jin Goo is terrified. He scuffles backwards, underneath the dining table pushed against the wall, under a naive belief that it will provide any sort of protection. His mother lies unconscious on the floor of the living room, blood flowing from an open wound on her upper arm. The home phone lays on her limp palm, the screen black. His father advances slowly, step by heavy step. “Please...” Jin Goo’s words are whispers, barely whispers. “Dad please...” His words do nothing to quell the anger he sees burning the man’s eyes. “It’s all your fault.” The words are not aimed at him. No, his father’s eyes are locked onto the two crying infants Jin Goo is holding close to him. “If it wasn’t for you bastards, things wouldn’t have gone to shit! If it wasn’t for you, none of this would have happened!” His father is screaming. He’s at the dinner table now, only holding the knife, the beer bottle having been dropped a few steps back, the amber liquid spilling out onto the carpet. Despite his efforts, his father is stronger, and wrenches his baby brother out of his grasp. Jin Goo sits there hugging his sister closely to his chest and only watches, stunned, as the kitchen knife, the one he’s seen his mother use time and time again to cook, continuously enters his little brother. There’s a lot of blood. The police burst through the door just as his father turns back towards him, intent on taking his sister as well. Jin Goo doesn’t realize he’s screaming and shaking until a kind-faced policeman hushes him with a warm blanket and an embrace within strong, comforting arms.
A large part of his mother disappears along with his baby brother and father figure. She tries, and to her credit she tries so hard. But there are many times where she stares off into space, mind elsewhere. There are many times where he is woken in the middle of the night by the soft sobs of his mother. And there are many times where he has to hold her hand tightly to stop her from shaking. But she tries her best to keep up jobs, to bring food to the table, to keep a roof over their head. And it doesn’t always work. But they always had a protective mother to guard them from the outside world. Until they didn’t. She collapses one day, and Jin Goo, eyes wide, watches as the neighbour she was talking to, calls the ambulance. She’s diagnosed with a late stage of brain cancer, whatever that means. All he hears is ‘cancer’ and he grips his mother’s hand tightly. Cancer is bad. That much he knows. Cancer is expensive. And they don’t have the money. So what else can they do? They watch from the sidelines as the tumour grows, prying their mother from them. They watch as the doctors wheel her bed into the surgery room, promising to try their best. The doctors make the surgery sound so easy, their words filled with positive tones, putting the two children at ease. But the moment the head doctor comes out from the surgery room, Jin Goo can tell it’s not good news he’ll be receiving.
-
His mother doesn’t get buried in the ground. They don’t have the money for a burial. She gets cremated, the fire licking at her body until there’s nothing but her ashes, ashes that at procedurally swept into a small can. Hell, they can’t even afford a proper urn. She deserves better than being stuck in a tin can forever, so Jin Goo takes his sister on a long bus ride a few days later, to the pier. They aren’t allowed to throw things into the water, he’s been told before, so they do it quietly, in a corner when nobody’s watching. His mother, when she was still happy, his mother was free. And the water was a free a force as he ever knew, free to roam where it wished, free to stretch into the distance, bound by nothing. So he scatters his mother’s ashes and watches with his sister as they sit on the edge of the pier, as the water washes her away.
-
The year afterwards, his baby sister gets taken from him as well. He watches quietly, off to the side, as the man and woman sign the documents. He eyes them warily, unable to trust that the man won’t become the monster his own father turned into, unable to know that the woman won’t contract a horrible disease that will leave his sister with more loss than she deserved. But from the way they’re dressed, Jin Goo can tell that they’re well off. They have money. Money that can be used to enroll her into school, to buy her nice clothes, to treat her to restaurants, to buy her toys. And with everything she’s been through, she deserves at least that. So he smiles and promises her that he’ll try to see her often, though he hasn’t a clue where she’ll live. He hugs her one last time and forces his fingers then arms to loosen and let her go. He holds back his tears until she leaves and night comes when nobody can detect the silent tears that get absorbed by his pillow.
He fingers the ring hanging from his metal chain around his neck. It’s about the time of year that his mother died. He doesn’t remember the exact date, though he should. It’s too muddled in his memory. It’s been almost two decades since she was taken from him. He can’t hear her soft laugh in his ear anymore, nor can he feel her arms wrapping around him lovingly. He can’t even remember really, what she looked like. But he’s at the one place that reminds him of her, legs dangling from the pier, sitting in the same spot where he had scattered her ashes so many years ago. The water still looks the same, knocking gently against the stone wall he sits on top of. It still stretches out into the horizon, as far as his eyes can see. He’s as close as he can get to her ever again, but she still feels so far away. He hears a playful shriek behind him, and turns to see a man and a woman, strolling along the pier in the sunset with their two children, two girls. A happy family. He doesn’t lie to himself, sometimes when he sees pictures like that, he feels envy. Why did some get to grow up with a happy family and some a broken family? His father, jailed. His brother and mother, dead. His sister, lost. But there’s nothing he can do about it, there’s no way he can change the past. So he turns back to the family member he can barely reach anymore, looking back out to point where the water meets the horizon, and tries to remember what she looked like, and what her laugh sounded like.

Leopard Bikini Overload
This past weekend, I went to the Jersey Shore with my family, sort of against my will. As my get out of jail free card, I brought a guy friend for the nights I wanted to sneak away. And by sneak away I mean to some trashy bars to get vodka sodas where domestic fights were occurring all around between couples who wore shredded clothes.
My friend and I left after work Friday night in my car at about 7 PM from his office. It took us almost 4 hours to get to Wildwood, New Jersey. The drive wasn’t too bad since we waited a little bit before leaving, but the motel and yes.. MOTEL with an “M” was pretty bad. If my parents thought this place was decent back then, then they most likely just got their eye prescription corrected. Let’s put it this way, if this motel were a person, it would be Mama June circa early TLC days. Everything was stained. Things you wouldn’t even expect to be stained were stained. The best part about the motel was the location though, right on the water. We were a step away from the sand and super close to North Wildwood where all the bars were.
We dropped our stuff, quickly got changed and called an uber to go to a bar. We started at Keenan’s, a popular college bar in North Wildwood. They played pretty good music and their drinks were far from weak. My friend and I had a nice night, dancing and catching up, which then followed by a late night dip in the pool, semi interrupted by torrential down pour and thunder, but we stayed put.
The following day, sunlight had a new meaning. I had never been so hungover and I was pissed because all I wanted to do was veg on the beach, but I could barely keep my eyes open to navigate. We grabbed bagels, fruit and coffee and headed to the beach despite my better judgement and longing for bed and darkness. We set up camp and took out our food only to get attacked by 3 aggressive seagulls. I looked around and it seemed seagulls were attacking people left and right. It was The Birds in real life. So I threw my food down and said, “ What good is a hangover if I cant eat, damn devil birds!” I laid there for about an hour, starving and then realized, I can’t do this. My friend had already left me by then to help my parents who just arrived. So I packed up and went back to Jersey Bates.
That night we went to a fancy seafood restaurant that was very good called “Jersey Girl.” It was only 8 years old and received high praise for their drinks and food. My sister, her husband, their two kids, my parents, my friend and I all went. I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I have pretty severe food allergies, so granted, to scare the shit out of our waitress in warning her of my allergy I whipped out my epi-pen and put it right on the table. Of course she panicked and went back and forth to the kitchen as if she were being timed on each trip, but she did a good job. After that my sister and her husband walked the pier with my friend and I which was crawling with high schoolers and made me feel like a dinosaur. We quickly wrapped that up and parted ways to do 20-year-old things, like trashy bars round two. So that’s what we did. It was unfortunate because I was tired by then and broke from drinks the previous night, but we went anyway. We started at Westy’s and ended up at Flip Flopz, then back at Keenan’s THEN back at Flip Flopz. Flip Flopz was find up until some drunk girl fell on me causing me to spill my drink. She kept falling over me, pushing me on to other people so I did what any other girl would do in the situation, I pushed back, hard sending her flying into her boyfriend who was equally as drunk and when she tried to turn around I ran. The band that played ended up becoming friends with my guy friend who was so far up their ass he has shit on his sleeves.
At one point, my friend left me and I was swarmed by dudes (can’t complain about that). I met this one guy Jack, that I hit it off with, who was a special ed teacher in Philly, who surfs and travels. Doesn’t hurt that he looked like a young Matthew McConaughey. Jack introduced me to his best friend, his cousin and his cousin’s friends. When my friend came back, he saw I made friends, introduced himself, yada yada, then got lost. I lied and said my friend was actually my brother, to avoid confusion as to why we aren’t dating, which my friend loved and ended up telling half the bar we’re brother and sister. Spread like wild fire, even in instances not worth noting. So Jack and I hit it off. We danced, laughed, he bought me a couple drinks. At one point, the beers hit me and I really had to go to the bathroom, so I told Jack “I’ll be right back” which was a mistake. I left, came back and Jack was gone. It was so dark in there that I had no energy or night vision goggles to see him so I looked for 2 mins and then gave up. Note to self: when talking to a cute guy DO NOT ABANDON SHIP, STAND YOUR GROUND. At this time, it was 3 AM anyhow and ready to bounce. So we ubered back to Jersey Bates, went swimming, my friend befriended our puerto rican neighbors by bumming a cigarette (gross) as I went up and jumped into bed.
The next day was the best beach day and I was actually able to enjoy it without being hungover. Note to the young: PACE YOURSELF, no one is going to steal your drinks from you at a bar, so might as well enjoy it (just don’t get drugged whilst milking your drink). The beach is by far the best place to people watch and I have to say the people that were at this beach were far from boring. They were all crazy and there was a wide variety of beach goers. I saw several ladies in leopard print bikinis or cover ups. I saw a couple that actually wore matching American flat bathing suits. Mind you.. July 4th is over and that is the ONLY time it is okay to wear the American flag, ya yankee doodle wack job. I saw one very large woman who practically held her baby upside down while rummaging through a bag for diapers. The most annoying thing about this beach though were also the people because almost everyone smoked. Who wants to go down to the beach and breathe in the misty cigarette smoke? Uh, I sure fucking DON’T! Lung Cancer Activists, you can do whatever you want with your lungs, but I only have this one body and I choose to take care of it.
Overall, the weekend was good. I always enjoy seeing my sister and her kids. They were adorable and very well behaved the whole trip. My nephew was loving the ocean. My favorite part of the whole trip was when he got pummeled by the waves then quickly came up and the first thing out of his mouth was “WHERE’S PAPA!!!!!!” I was like “Yo dude, relax, he’s behind you.”
