About Me
I go by Clae or Clover. Either is fine.
I have a lot of different terms I can use to describe my gender/sexuality, but I sum it all up as "nonbinary lesbian". I am transmisogyny exempt.
Pronouns are she/her or they/them.
25 years old.
As for what I'm like: I'm a pretty easygoing gal, and I strive to better myself in different ways. I can't lie for shit, so I just don't do it. I'm pretty optimistic, despite my own circumstances. Sometimes I have trouble articulating what I'm trying to communicate, so bear with me. Don't be afraid to say hi!
I'm some type of leftist. I don't know what kind, but I'm left.
I don't really have a DNI, I only care if you're a decent person-- that is to say if you're a pedophile, zoophile, a general bigot, or condone harassment: you're getting blocked.
Other blogs: @claepots is my art blog. If you're interested, I have a self ship blog. DM me for the url.
This is a safe for work blog, although some posts will reference the act of sex in certain discussion posts. DM me for my NSFW blog.

Lol, I got into your blog because of your Heart Stopper fanart. It baffled me how you love a high standard lgbt+ show like Heartstopper but also a fan of DC's low marketing strategy, bi Tim.
Alright well here's the thing that if you just got into my blog bc of Heartstopper you wouldn't know then I guess:
my icon being bi Tim was something I did last June before Tim became queer in canon (like, before Batman: Urban Legends #4 with the first part of Sum of Our Parts even came out). I made it for myself for pride month because i'm bi, and Tim was already my fave character at the time who I also saw as bi. Him ending up actually coming out as bi a few months later was literally just luck on my part.
And so... my fave character getting confirmed to have the same sexuality as me when it's something I'd already seen him as? Yeah, I am gonna be a fan of that even if not everything with it has been done in a 100% perfect way 🤷‍♂️

I'm curious about your answers to questions 5 and 18 for the aro ask game (if you haven't already done these)
5. How did you figure out you were aro?
It can be a little tricky to explain because it was more of a gradual realization rather than a big 'oh!' moment. This might be a bit long, and it's a lot of explaining of subconcious thoughts rather than concrete events.
When I was about 18 I got really into researching sexuality/romance and lgbtqia+ stuff. I'd say before that, I didn't super think about it.
I had no idea that I was aro and assumed I was allo for my entire childhood. My line of thinking was 'I haven't had a crush yet, but I'm kind of interested to see what they're like someday.' Also I thought romance plots on TV tended to be boring and stupid. Although I guess at some point I subconsciously picked up the idea that everyone falls on love at some point.
Ironically I figured I was likely panromantic because I "felt the same about all genders". (I think I was about 20 when I picked out that label. Took a few more months to realize I was aro. )
As I was reading about people's experiences with attraction, I started to realize that what they were describing sounded so alien to me. I also realized that most people my age could confidently say they'd had a crush or at least felt attracted to someone, while my own feelings seemed more ambiguous.
But I mean, everyone falls in love right? I mean yeah, aromantic exists, but I don't hate the idea of romance, so that can't be me.
Eventually though I couldn't deny it; those people were feeling something I wasn't. I did not feel romantic attraction.
After I realized it took me a bit to get used to. I wouldn't say I was sad, (well maybe a bit disappointed, crushes seemed neat and I wasn't gonna get to try one), it was more that I hadn't even considered this a possibility, but apparently, it had been my reality for all my life without me realizing. I couldn't even call myself aromantic at first. I just said I "didn't experience attraction".
So basically it was a slow realizing that took me a while to get used to. Now that I'm used to it though, I think it's really neat. I like looking at how differently I think about some stuff because of my aro-ness.
18. Do you have any aro-spec headcannons?
Here's 3 that I can remember:
Badyah from Dead End: Paranormal Park. "I'm straight. At least, I think I am. Is this being straight, not thinking about it?". I feel like a good chunk of my aro experience could be summed up as not thinking about it, and, like, that's just a very aro thing to say. Ironically the episode she says this contains an arophobic microaggression, so it's likely that she's actually straight like stated (which is disappointing for a show with such a strong lgbt+ focus). Still, thinking I'd found an aro character naturally affected me so profoundly that still like to pretend.
Imogen from Heartstopper. She didn't seem as broken up as you'd expect someone to be over Nick rejecting her. And he didn't just say 'no' either. He said 'yes' and cancelled last minute. I appreciate that the show didn't shoe horn in too much unnecessary drama, but I feel like a person would typically be a lot more upset than Imogen ended up being. And then Nick says something about hiding your true self and just pretending to be the person everyone wants you to be and she gets it. I like to think that that means she's somewhere on the aro-spec. I even actually wrote a one shot fanfic about it.
Link from The Legend of Zelda franchise. Like, 5000 people show interest in him romantically and he does not care. Romance is not on this man's mind. Also, like, he's green. Nuff said.
Thanks for asking. I didn't figure anyone would ask me and I love answering aro questions 😊

Let’s Talk About Camilo Madrigal
With a slow trend of more well portrayed lgbt+ characters making there way onto disney’s big screen this past year I have been hoping for a while that Encanto might continue the trend. It has not reported that it will have any lgbt characters, however that doesn’t mean there aren’t any and if I were to put my money it would be on Camilo, the second youngest of the Madrigal cousins.
Tumblr media
Each character’s powers seem to relate to a personality trait, the one with super hearing is shy/quite, the one with healing food is nurturing, but along with their powers of shape-shifting Camilo who “doesn't quite know who they are yet”, not knowing who you are isn’t a personality trait, it is goal or journey. From both the trailer and the promotional picture above we see that Camilo has turned into both men and women, and although I don’t want to fall into that stereotype of shape-shifters being non-binary, it would be interesting for disney to introduce there first non-cis, non-adult lgbt+ film character.
I don’t think it necessarily has to fall under that exact stereotype however. Non-binary shape-shifters such as Double Trouble and the genderqueer Charlie from Legends are implied to having been changing shape since they were really little and might not have a set biological gender, where as Camilo is amab and is referred to as such up until the time the movie takes place. It would be really cool to see a character who can shape-shift into male and female slowly realize they are neither, to spend the film turning into others only to figure out who they truly are.

New Luca Trailer
I just watched the new Luca Trailer and it is breathtaking, but one thing is on my my mind after watching it and if you read my blog you will know what. This person sums it up perfectly:
Tumblr media
At this point I don’t care what China, Conservatives, or what you think, disney has gone to long without good LGBT representation, its been thirty years since Aladdin gave us the first non-white protagonist, its time for the first LGBT protagonist in a Disney film. And look how cute Luca and Alberto are.

My 7 Comfort Movies
Tagged by @muses-circle- thank you!! ♥ Your choices were epic. I can also list a lot of ‘old’ movies among my favourites, specifically A Streetcar named Desire, Sunset Boulevard and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, but I wouldn't call them my 'comfort' movies because they are quite dark and unsettling. So for the purposes of this tag I am just listing my favourite 'Feel Good' movies.
1) The Sum of Us
Tumblr media
Russell Crowe (above with John Polson) plays the gay son of Harry, played by Jack Thompson. A beautiful, touching, warm and funny movie. This review is from the Guardian: ‘The film is most memorable for Harry’s beautiful temperament; this is a man incapable of intolerance towards people he loves, irrespective of the extent to which their lifestyles differ. It is the best kind of tissue box drama: playful, warm-spirited, beautifully written and performed, and speckled with humour and self-deprecation. Harry’s toast to Jeff and his new boyfriend (“up your bum!”) became the stuff of legend.’
2) Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Tumblr media
This movie needs no introduction: it will always be in my top ten. I have probably watched it several thousand times.
3) Love Actually
Tumblr media
Another movie that needs no introduction, and yes, a lot of people hate it/ despise it/ find it seriously problematic, I know. But I also can’t deny I enjoy it, a lot. And the above ‘gift-wrapping’ scene with Rowan Atkinson never fails to make me nearly wet myself laughing.
4) Billy Elliot
Tumblr media
‘This is a film with a lot of charm, a lot of humour and a lot of heart....The young male ballet dancer is not a stereotype, and yet the film certainly does not feel it necessary to reassure the audience that Billy is straight; for my money, that's part of this picture's liberal humanity:’ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
5) The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Tumblr media
‘1994’s The Adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert is a timeless, glitter soaked classic for many reasons. The cocks in their frocks shimmied LGBT themes and Australian cinema to a worldwide audience that were captivated by the sequins and mature handling of serious subject matter.‘- Will Cook.
6) Muriels' Wedding
Tumblr media
Another Aussie classic. Also a feminist masterpiece. Muriel is trapped by many things: a horrible father,  toxic ‘friends’, the suffocating backwater that is her home town...all seems lost until she meets up with Rhonda, and her life is transformed.’ Muriel’s passage to womanhood is about realising which friendships are true and which ones stink, and tragically, about seeing that her mum must have been young and beautiful and hopeful once too – and that she cannot allow herself to meet the same fate, ‘ Karen Pickering
7)  The Intouchables
Tumblr media
The plot of this joyful French film is inspired by the true story of quadriplegic aristocrat Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and his caregiver Abdel Sellou. It may be corny in places and there is nothing unpredictable about the story, but it’s a film that will make you smile and laugh and cry and most importantly, leave you with a glimmer of hope for the future of mankind.
I would like to tag @boxed-out-sims @nocturnalazure @desiree-uk @alittledaylight @simmerjazen @littlesims2chick @drawing-way-outside-the-lines and @la-simulacio!! Cheers, dears!

2020 End of Year Fandom Asks
No one asked but I still want to answer these because they are fun.
What fandom(s) did you join this year? Dynasty, The Wilds. I am also officially an Ampersand (since I didn’t know the Aly & AJ fandom had a name until this year).
What fandom(s) did you leave? Dynasty (Kidding. I’m taking a break right now but I am still in love with Kirby Anders and Firby)
What fandom(s) from the past did you return to? Legend of Korra, but can I honestly say I never left? I created my first fanfic for Korrasami this year, but if you see my room, you would know I’ve been obsessed with them from the beginning.
What show/book/movie etc. was your comfort and/or escape this year? I dove back into Legend of Korra since it was on Netflix and I don’t think there will ever be a moment where I am not in love with that show. I have found a new comfort movie in the Netflix release of The Prom because I don’t know when I will actually be able to see the stage show in person. (I am 100% projecting onto Alyssa Greene already). I am going to add a video game to this as well since it is technically a visual novel. A Summer’s End: Hong Kong 1986 was something I was not prepared to fall in love with, but oh my gosh I don’t think I have loved a creative concept more this year.
What creative work are you most proud of (your own or someone else’s)? I’m proud of a ton of people and if I posted them all here, this post would be miles long. I’ve seen people finish series fics and others post their work for the first time. Everyone had something wonderful to contribute.
Did you have any new ships this year? After my rewatch of The Wilds, there will be a lot of ships coming out of that.
Which character did you relate to most this year? Kirby Anders, but that also might be because the fandom has almost unanimously deemed her LGBT (leaning towards the lesbian side). I wrote a lot of my feelings straight into her and her style in the show is very similar to mine.
What quote really sums up how you’re feeling at this point? “When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.” A quote from Legend of Korra that I think describes how this year went.
Recommend something that you really enjoyed in 2020. A Summer’s End: Hong Kong 1986. Please please please if you have access to a computer get this game. It captures the relationship of two women and their world during a turning point in history. The art is gorgeous. The soundtrack is my favorite thing to listen to when working. I don’t think I can say enough good things about it. I LOVED IT (and there’s talks of a sequel or at least another game with the same characters in the future).
Share something you learned in 2020. Stan culture is exhausting. I love all sorts of people and things, but devoting all my time to getting attention from my idols on the internet just isn’t for me. I did get a notice from Liz for my art at the beginning of the year and I will cherish it forever, but I can’t keep up that kind of energy 24/7.
Name a fellow fan who you really appreciated this year. I don’t think I would’ve gotten into writing or creating this year if it wasn’t for @youvebeengrazed. We bounced a lot of ideas off each other and she let me drag her into the Dynasty pit of doom.
Share your wishes for your fellow fans in the new year. As much as the world is trying to tear us apart, let’s try and use fandom as a space to bring us together.
What do you want to do less of next year? Trying to impress people in fandom. I think I get caught up in this thought pattern of “If I can get this person/these people to like me and my work, then I’m validated.” The fact that I can create and like my own ideas should be validation enough so I am going to work on that.
What do you want to do more of next year? Hopefully writing more? I kind of burnt out towards the end of the year after being on a roll with good ideas. Definitely making more edits because I really have come to enjoy doing that.
What are you looking forward to coming out in 2021? Season 4 of Dynasty so I can have more material for writing and edits (as long as all the trolling and teasing about Kirby being dead turns out to be false because I will cry). We might be getting some new Korra comics? I am always down for those.

don’t worry about slow replies or w/e this is meant to be fun when you can!! but capitalism is the worst. and yesss, my faves openly support lgbt+ fans they’re good boys. i almost missed the yoi news because of the destiel spam so i wasn’t even sure if it was a joke at first either. tumblr is on fire right now. it wasn’t that art but wow also HELLO SIR I AM LOOKING not very respectfully i am but a weak bi. i used to read a load but quarantine brain is broken so i cant focus on novels now.
i want to read tgcf but i keep flopping after like 5 pages but also san lang hot and i heard there’s wlw in it?? cloud recesses does look so pretty to live in but i’m such a nhs, i just want to sit in his nie sect and paint fans and look at pretty things all day. let other people swing swords and all, gossip is way more powerful. rogue cultivator tho your mind! this is the best answer to this question. and that’s not lame, the reason my s/o is the best is bc they know i like to have my own time
most of the time and we can just sit and chill in quiet for hours. it’s perfect. OK! mdzs question which char deserved better (so many choices…) and tell me about other fandoms you’re into/active if you have any more!
hi classified cultivator!!
LMAO THE DESTIEL SPAM. all those memes about the 2020 bingo card - destiel canon, yoi return, and now the marvel trailer for the sambucky show 💀💀 they’re going to queerbait us so bad i’m in love with the chaos that is going to happen 😍❤️
i took me a little bit to get into it too 😭 all the word building but it gets better ❤️ ahaha it’s just vibes - i was like wow i’m pretty sure this is all important information but yeah i’m still a little confused. i was given a character sheet google doc/drive thing that might be able to clarify some things!! i’ll link it at the end! and omg wlw!!! lmao they haven’t shown up in the 100 chapters i’ve read but that info has made me excited 👀 maybe i’ll continue reading it on my days off this week ahaha!
OKAY BUT TRUE THATS MY SECOND CHOICE - to be nhs and vibe all day 💀❤️ and be a gossiper and mastermind on the side 😼 i am a gemini after all HAHAHA.
omg which character deserved better 😭😭 oh no, my gut reaction of lan zhan of course 💔 i’m still thinking about that fic i read like 2 weeks ago where it was his life recovering and grieving after the 30 lashes ahhh all the pain he went through and waiting 13 years for wwx to come back!!! that really really breaks my heart. and then all the things before like his fucked up childhood, mum dying, dad dying, cloud recesses burning, getting his leg broken, pinning after someone, and having the love of your life DIE!!!! wtf 😭😭😭😭😭😭 it hurts me so much.
oooo other fandoms - so i never really contribute to any of the fandoms i’ve been in. i just sit back and observe ❤️ and i’m normally into one fandom at a time. for some weird reason hannibal doesn’t count 💀 i will always be laughing at that show HAHAH.
but before mdzs tbh i was honestly just waiting for another fandom to take me 😭 so i watched avatar the last air bender and the legend of korra in june/july this year and ahhh it was so good!! and i read heaps of fic and my other blog basically became an avatar blog ahaha. then before that the september-december period of 2019 was my it chapter 2 era bc i saw the movie at the cinema and the whole reddie thing - having the love of your life die before telling them that you love them 💔 (whoops spoilers lol). and before that i honestly can’t remeber??? i think my fandom blog was more of a multi fandom blog with posts from everywhere - rather than just super focused on one thing like it is now HAHA. no regrets ❤️
i think this will be more on an indicator - my top fandoms in my AO3 bookmarks are:
mdzs captain america 💀 lol this is why i’ve relapsed with the sambucky show les miserables avatar game of thrones hannibal inception yuri on ice
hahaha that’s so funny - that basically sums up the last 5 years of my life 💀
what about you - who do you think deserved better? and what other fandoms are you into/active in?
oops my phone is about to die 😳 so i’m gonna post this asap HAHAH
thank you for the questions haha ❤️

hey, so i have never been very interested in legends of tomorrow but i lowkey stan constantine and i wanted to ask if he’s in it a lot and if it’s worth watching? because it looks really fun tbh but the only other dc show i’ve watched were like 2 seasons of arrow and i have no idea if you have to be familiar with the other shows to enjoy lot?
Hey nonnie!
Legends is an awesome show and is totally worth a watch!!!! It’s so ridiculous and fun and there’s tons of lgbt rep. I love it so much. And Constantine is in it a TON! He doesn’t show up until season 3 but when he shows up he’s in it in nearly every single episode being the amazing warlock he is. I’ve seen some people say to skip season 1 but I recommend you watch Legends from the beginning because season 1 has Leonard Snart and he’s the best and there’s a lot of great episodes in s1 lus the whole setting up the team and stuff. That’s important. The show really picks up in season 2 and that’s when Nate is introduced. Snart and Nate are my favs. Then season 3 you can enjoy John Constantine from here on out :) Seriously he’s in it so much. So i definitely recommend starting legends from the begging to really enjoy it.
BUT
You can absolutely watch Legends without watching the other shows or knowing anything about them. I did. I had only seen one season of Arrow when I started watching Legends, knew nothing about the other shows, and I had no problem watching the entire thing before starting the other shows. There are some crossovers where you need to watch the other shows in order to keep up with the story though. And by that I mean each of the shows has one episode for the crossover. So for like Crisis on Earth X you have to watch the supergirl episode first, then the arrow one, then the flash one, then finish with the legends one. But you don’t need to watch the other shows in their entirety to understand what’s happening. You can totally start with Legends. In fact I think Legends is the perfect introduction to the DCTV verse because it’s pretty self contained but has characters from the other shows so you get glimpses of the other shows through them. And it’s just so much fun. It’s a wild crazy show and i love it.
To sum up: WATCH LEGENDS!! It’s great, you don’t need to know anything about the other shows to watch it, and it has tons of John Constantine it it :D

Top 10 (L)GBTQ Shows & Movies To Stop The Pining.
Tumblr media
As someone who has been consuming as much LGBTQ media as I can, I feel I need to do something productive with the hours I have poured into this. Most of these are able to be streamed on Hulu, because as I’ve learned, Hulu is home to some of the best queer media. A fair warning, most of these are sapphic or mainly sapphic. Without further ado, here is my top ten favorite LGBTQ Films and TV Shows.
10. The L Word (stream on Netflix)
I am pretty sure that no queer women under the age of 35 actually enjoys this show. However, I do think that every woman who likes women should watch this. The cheesy plotmlines and messy characters make the show interesting to watch even if other parts (*cough* Jenny *cough*) make it unbearable. Anyway despite its flaws and slightly biphobic undertones, I think at least a few episodes need to be watched.
9. The First Girl I Loved (stream on Hulu)
Honestly this is just like a good chick flick but make it gay. High school unrequited love, dramatic kisses, it's pretty good, clearly not that memorable.
8. The Fosters (and Good Trouble) (stream on Hulu)
Honestly, this show did so much for Gen Z queer people, or at least myself. The diverse main cast, interesting storylines, and head on approach to sexuality and gender, this show helped me learn about the LGBTQ community before I actively sought it out. As in, this show was some of the first representation on TV that I really saw. Steph and Lena showed a side of marriage that I hadn’t seen. Instead of just beautiful wedding photos I saw that love can be hard and messy and still be worthwhile.
The subsequent spin-off show (Good Trouble), continues to showcase diverse people and (dramatized) real life situations. It feels like the show that first showed me that it was okay to be different, has grown with me as the show is life as a young adult. This show makes me feel like I am in middle school again in the best way, chock full of nostalgia.
7. Marvel’s Runaways (stream on Hulu)
I am not a huge marvel fan, (*gasp* I said it!), it just feels like men showing off and creating chaos to fight chaos. I much prefer softer shows that make me laugh and have a large female presence (and it took me 19 years to realize I liked women....). But, twitter broke me down on this one and I am pretty obsessed.
The plot is exciting and fast paced, and it’s refreshing to see everyday concerns of young adults/ teens weaved in between the action. Each character has unique features and negative and positive traits and the cast is DIVERSE. The relationships between the characters are also complex and the slow build sapphic romance between two of the main characters is everything you could ever dream of.
6. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (stream on Hulu)
I learned the other day that Dolly Parton produced this show, which for some reason makes perfect sense to me. Of course the show that I spent my formative years watching would be produced by a legend such as Dolly Parton.
I am not totally sure this counts as LGBT media but One Day at a Time (stream on Netflix because it’s good just not on my list) references it as something young lesbian (and bi) women do and I did so here it is.
I can pretty much sum up why I love this show in 3 words, Sarah Michelle Geller. I thought she was the coolest person ever, and wanted to be her so bad. Watching her kill the creepy vampires, just iconic. And in later seasons when Willow dates a witch, amazing, just *chefs kiss*. I was obsessed when I saw this show for the first time and I wish I could re-watch it for the first time.
5. Vita and Virginia (stream on Hulu)
Historical women being gay is one of the most validating things, and furthermore some of the most beautiful love stories. Vita and Virginia is based on letters sent between the two women (Author Virginia Wolff and Vita Sackville-West), and shows a high stakes and emotional relationship between the two. The 20s fashion and culture paired with the universal queer feeling of pining, this movie was everything.
It is also important to note that Vita is a tiny top and Virginia is a beautiful soft giantess bottom (she’s like 6ft or something crazy), and I think that is enough reason to watch this movie in itself
4. The Girl King (stream on Hulu)
Based on Christina of Sweden, who ruled over Sweden for 10 years before marrying the Pope and becoming the Virgin Queen Of Rome, is breathtaking. The juxtaposition of Christina harsh exterior to the world and her court, and the softness she shows her lady in waiting is captivating. This movie gave me the strong female leader that doesn’t get shown nearly enough in today’s media. This movie made me laugh, cry, and hold my breath in anticipation. It is beautiful and makes me proud to be a queer women.
3. Little Fires Everywhere (stream on Hulu)
This 8 part series based on the NY Times best seller written by Celeste Ng, is dramatic and poignant. It forces you to think critically about moral areas that we like to think we have the right answer to, and it makes me rethink your own privilege.
The dance around the subject of sexuality and romance, and motherhood throughout every aspect of the film is enchanting. What is a perfect life, what is a perfect mother, and how do you move on and grow from mistakes. This show is beautiful and regardless of gender or sexuality this series is worth the watch.
2. Motherland: Fort Salem (stream on Hulu)
There is no match quite like that of lesbians and witchcraft, and this show does both brilliantly. This show is female dominated and exciting. The characters are interesting and all have different things that motivate them. The history behind the world the show lives in is deep and fleshed out. It’s the fantasy TV show that I have been waiting for my whole life without knowing.
With a strong queer women as the main character, who has a complex and passionate love story with ANOTHER strong queer women, this show is just amazing. Unlike male dominated media (production included) this show gives viewers the tender and tension filled moments that aren't given to sapphic love stories usually. It doesn’t feel overly sexual (looking at you Blue is the Warmest Color) but it’s not just friendship under a different label.
It releases new episodes every Wednesday so, get caught up because this show is worth it!
Portrait of a Lady On Fire (stream on Hulu)
I never understood why french was a romantic language, until I watched this movie. The score is beautiful and the slow burn romance between the two main characters is captivating. I don’t know what more to say, painters and ladies just go together it seems and this movie proves that. It’s a bit long but it doesn’t feel like that long of a movie.

Does/Did Dobson ever have his own comic series or has it all been strips of him bashing people of different mindsets than his? I mean I know of that- what was it- the thing about lesbians comic but did anything even come out of that???
He’s had a few, though nothing has lasted very long save for a couple...
Untitled Video Store Clerk/Autobiographical comic - probably his first comics posted “professionally”, part were stories about a clerk at a video rental store. Heavily manga inspired and bizarrely wacky. Others could be considered a precursor to SYAC, in which Dobson drew comics about his day-to-day life working at a video rental store. Actually shows off a lot of the talent he started off with. Can be read and seen here.
Patty - Dobson’s “realistic” take on how a tomboy in high school discovers she’s a lesbian. Lasted one volume which can be read here. Occasionally draws art of the two characters to show what a good LGBT “ally” he is. Recently drew a “redesign” to see if people were interested in seeing him redo it.
Formera - very generic “young boy magically and randomly transported to other world and meets cave girl” story. Lasted two volumes. Not really much to say about it due to how generic it was, though a follower did point out the hypocrisy between how Dobson hates on Quiet from MGSV vs how he wrote said cave girl.
Legends/Alex ze Pirate - pirate girl and her crew gets into wacky hijinks. Originally created by a girl Dobson had a crush on and was about space pirates. Lasted two volumes mixed with some comics only posted online. Best know for “Lesbian Kick”
Percy Phillips - massive Sherlock Homes rip-off. Covered in full detail here.
Danny and Spot/Danny and Spot 2: Stop Making Fun of my Wii, Assholes!) - flat-out Garfield rip-off about a guy and his talking cat. Lasted only a few comics in its original run, brought back as a comic calling the Wii the best console ever and bashing the PS3/XBox360 because some people on a video games forum made fun of Dobson for being a such an intense Nintendo shill
So You’re A Cartoonist - His longest last comic to date. Started out as a sort of “day in the life of” comic about being a webcomic artist, but quickly became a strawman comic for Dobson to bash people and things he disliked and imply anyone who disagreed with him was stupid. Origin of his blue bear persona and the “STOP DOING SEXIST CRAP!” comic. Basically, if you see a blue bear, it’s a SYAC.
Brentalfloss: The Comic - was hired to be the artist of a comic written by Brentalfloss(of “What If ~video game song~ Had Lyrics?” fame) and one of the McElroy Brothes. Lasted over a hundred comics before being cancelled. Dobson has no input aside from drawing it, so the jokes and writing are stronger than his usual stuff.
Unnamed Mythological Ski Resort comic(aka Muslim Vampire comic) - project Dobson has supposedly been working on for years but has no physical proof outside of one image. Bragged about how there would be no straight white men anywhere in the comic and mocked people who asked him why. Dubbed”Muslim Vampire comic” became Dobson claimed that the comic would be “very inclusive”, giving a vampire being Muslim as an example. Most likely will never see light of day.
The Adventure Zone: Amnesty webcomic adaptation - Dobson’s fancomic of a D&D audio podcast by the McElroy Brothers. Blatent attempt to be hired as their comic artist for an “official” adaptation of the podcast. Deflected any criticism of the comic by claiming it was a “direct adaptation” of the podcast and not adapted for better flow in a comic, so people were really just hating on the podcast itself. Abandoned after three chapters because he wasn’t getting the attention for it he wanted and the McElroys never contacted him.
Soapbox Derpy - what Dobson calls any political comics he makes. Had a couple made five or so years ago before churning out a ton after Donald Trump was elected president. Can be summed up as “all republicans are evil sexist Nazis and are also stupid racist rednecks”.
Bonus: Monkey Love: comic idea he never got off the ground about the son of a janitor and a monkey he fell in love with at the zoo. Seriously. No, I don’t know why.

Is it bad I honestly feel like TimBer is going to be over in the near future. Just the way DC has been pushing JonJay and making varaishts of them but doing absolutely nothing with Bernard makes me think he’s probably not going to be very important (which happens to almost every civilian love interest). Like we could’ve at least gotten a UL6 or 10 variant of them. Also Carol of the Bats doesn’t even mention Bernard despite them bringing up that Tim wants to be a better partner and is going to go on another date with him. Who knows though I’m just pessimistic because I know DC’s track record with their lgbt rep and relationships.
So I got something similar to this (but less specific) a bit ago and explained my thoughts on where most of these sorts of differences between how Jon’s coming out and Tim’s are being handled come from, primarily the difference between ‘thing happening with lead character in an ongoing solo’ vs ‘thing happening with a character in one story in an anthology book’, and in the few weeks since I made the post even though we’ve gotten a bit more info my overall opinions really haven’t changed.
I’d also like to bring up how the solicit description for the first part of Sum of Our Parts in UL #4 hadn’t even mentioned Bernard or Tim meeting up with a friend to begin with, yet he still was incredibly relevant to the story.
Tumblr media
(source)
Like, I understand pessimism and being overly cautious (because I am also Always Like That) but I do think sometimes we need to step back and look at the actual format of how the media is presented to us and how that effects things, I think that’s something with comics that people can jump to a lot of conclusions with because the way comics work can be… hard to notice patterns with if you’re not super closely looking over several months. Solicit descriptions while important don’t tell us everything (like, very much so on purpose). And also in terms of variant covers, Urban Legends has 4 stories per issue, they kinda have to spread things out between those they can’t just focus on one story.

TAYLOR SWIFT FOUGHT FOR YOUR ARTIST INTEGRITY – WHY WON'T YOU DO THE SAME? - AN OPEN LETTER TO EVERY ARTIST
I haven't been debating for three years for nothing so here we fucking GO.
Dear whomever it may concern,
In June 2015 – four years ago – Taylor Swift wrote an open letter to Apple Music explaining why she would not have her music be available for streaming on the platform; to give you a quick reminder and sum-up, she refused to have her music be streamed because the platform did not compensate artists for the three month free trial their users were getting.
To quote Taylor: „This is not about me. (...) This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field… but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.“
Apple Music changed their policy, and stated that they would be paying artists their earned due during the three months of the free trial, and on that day, Taylor Swift herself changed the game for many – if not all – artists in the industry; especially those she sought out to protect, the new talent. In fact, many artists speaking up about the current situation – some of them against Taylor, to which I'll get to in a moment – probably got quite a few cheques from their Apple Music streams that definitely helped them become financially stable. Most of all, though, this action did not remain on one streaming platform. As it is in physics, every action has a reaction, and here Taylor's actions echoed throughout the industry and insured the payment of every artist throughout the streaming platforms that are largely the way people listen to music today.
Taylor Swift did not fight for herself. By the time she released 1989, she was already an established enough artists to earn more than enough money for herself, her crew, and everyone attached to her in a more than decent manner simply by playing her live shows. As quoted above, she fought for YOU. YOU, reading this. YOU, an artist she might not even know but whose work she already valued enough to put her name and reputation on the line. YOU, who might now open your mailbox and receive a cheque of royalties from a streaming service and not even know that it might be a fraction more than it would've been four years ago before Taylor asked for adequate payment for all artists. SHE FOUGHT FOR YOU. SHE FOUGHT FOR YOUR INTEGRITY. Taylor Swift has been a punching bag of the industry for years, and yet she put a then controversial topic upon her shoulders – in actuality one of many Taylor has spoken up her, be it LGBT+ issues, sexual assault, and her recent open involvement with politics – and did it all because she through it only seeked to help the fight for OTHERS.
TAYLOR SWIFT FOUGHT FOR YOUR ARTIST INTEGRITY IN 2015. WHY WON'T YOU DO THE SAME NOW?
I pose this question beacause, once again, Taylor is placed to speak within an issue that currently to many seems small and insignificant, seems like it might be an overreaction or not that important, but will through time, echo throughout the industry in a way that will change it from the ground up.
I firmly believe what I say now; One day, you will find yourself owning your own masters without a catch. And in some way it will – much like the numbers on the cheques from the streaming companies – be thanks to Taylor Swift, and what she is doing NOW.
Taylor Swift left Big Machine Records – a label she had been signed to since she was fifteen, the label that had discovered her and under which she had released six albums, starting with her self-titled Taylor Swift and ending with reputation – last year, and through that action, through her choosing what was best for her future career, she was forced to leave her masters behind. Now, the company – and the masters – have been sold to Scooter Braun, and Taylor – whose fight for the masters I will touch upon soon – is farther from them now than she ever was.
Before I go further, I want to ask you one question. One question that sums up this entire debate that has been brought up since the news broke. One question which, when answered, should tell you whose „side“ you should be on. One question.
DO YOU, AS AN ARTIST, BELIEVE YOU SHOULD OWN YOUR OWN WORK?
Is your answer no? Well then, I won't claim to understand it, but I certainly won't stop you to continue your career without truly owning a single piece of what you've achieved. If that is where you find comfort, if that is where you are content and happy, then side with Scooter Braun.
But, I believe, in your heart, that the answer is YES. And this is where I will tell you that it is important to stand with Taylor, as it will ultimately lead to a change in your opportunities as well.
To put this into perspective quickly before I move on: Imagine you are an artist. Imagine you have a lead writing and producing credit on every single one of your songs. Imagine that, at nineteen, you wrote an entire album all by yourself. And imagine now, that you DO NOT OWN ANY OF THAT. This is the situation with Taylor Swift. After a career that's slowly reaching two decades, Taylor Swift will only truly own her upcoming album Lover, out August 23rd. She does not own the masters to any of her SIX previous ones.
Taylor has publicly said that she has fought to own her masters for years, and was continuously denied, and she has also only found out about the sale of Big Machine Records along with the world. Imagine that, imagine your life's work being entirely in the hands that are not yours, and then – without your knowladge or consent – being sold to someone else. Someone who, throughout your career, has brought you only pain. And now they hold six pieces of your heart. Now they own your fifteen years.
Scott Burchetta, the previous owner of Big Machine Records, has released a statement along with the final offer he supposedly gave Taylor for her to aquire her masters, one she has denied. And he presented that offer as if to say Taylor has no one to blame but herself for not now owning her masters, had she accepted the offer. But, he doesn't point out one thing: where Taylor offered to stay in the company for an additional seven years to in return get full ownership of her masters, Scott Burchetta wanted ten. In fact, for every album master of hers Taylor wanted to own, Scott Burchetta asked for an additional album. Even for Taylor, an artist who for the longest time had an album out on average every two years, it would far exceed the ten year timeframe. Taylor Swift took the way out, even if it meant leaving the rights to her life's work behind, because she knew it was the right thing to do. Otherwise, she would have stayed. And the management would've still changed. And she would've been left caged for the remainder of her career.
The issue at hand here, though, is that not at one point was Taylor ever again reached out to with the option to buy her masters. Not once was she brought into the conversation of what was going to happen with her fifteen year legacy. And not once was she given the opportunity to buy that legacy back. Because ultimately, this was never about money. It was about POWER. It was about two men gaining the power over a female artist's fifteen years of work, the female artist whose sole discography brings the company 35% of its entire earnings, the female artist who now probably won't get updated certifications on any of her older songs, and who through that will never be able to officially reach her deserved status of an artist legend.
The line „if a man talks shit then I owe him nothing, and if he spends my change then he had it coming“ is now owned by a man who has complete power over Taylor's masters, a man who gets money off every one of your streams or previous album purchases. A man who has done nothing but abused and bullied Taylor throughout her career.
This isn't the first situation of an artist trying to get control over their masters. Recently, artist JoJo re-recorded and re-released an album she did not hold the masters to, rendering the masters useless, and that is one solution that Taylor could try. But the point is, she shouldn't HAVE to. None of the artists should have to. JoJo herself should not have had to.
I will bring back that question now. The main question. DO YOU BELIEVE ARTISTS SHOULD OWN THEIR OWN WORK? FULLY AND COMPLETELY, DO YOU BELIEVE THAT? Because THAT is what this conversation is about. Ultimately, it is not about who is mean or who is nice, not about who has what reputation, or who gets the bigger name to stand behind them, it is not about who needs to give a half-assed apology or anything of that sort. It is about arists integrity. It is about Taylor Swift, and YOU, and any other artist, being afforded the opportunity to own their own work.
I believe they should. I believe something should be done to protect artists. I believe there should be a clause that all artists get their own masters once they leave once their contract is settled. If not that, then I believe all those artists should be given the opportunity to buy them back; especially once the management of the company is changing.
If you believe so too, if you believe in YOUR integrity the way Taylor Swift always has, if you believe in HER ARTIST INTEGRITY as well, then stand by her and speak up. Be the reaction to her action. Be part of the echo throughout the industry. Fight for her right because you are most certainly fighting for yours.
@taylorswift, I stand with you. Everyone else should too.
With love,
Katarina

How would you update the Vehicle Voltron characters if there was ever a VLD style reboot of that series?
Hi Anon, thank you for the Ask!
I’ve got a few versions of this question sitting in my drafts, so I’m going to side-step and answer this in terms of general visual and writing style rather than any specific characters (which would be informed by this).
The first thing is that I would not do a VLD style reboot of Vehicle Voltron.
This is because quite a few things separate Vehicle Voltron from Lion Voltron most importantly the following:
Setting: Vehicle Voltron takes place in a galaxy. There is not a ‘home planet’ for the story’s setting (other than the planets from which the characters hail). Like Star Trek, the characters are constantly in motion as they explore the galaxy looking for a new hospitable planet to ease problems with over-crowding. Technically this is true of VLD, but only a few planets are visited in any meaningful way compared to how that is handled in Vehicle Voltron.
Very large cast of antagonists and protagonists: This is consistent with the space opera genre and requires a specific kind of story-telling and writing. It’s not for everyone. The large cast lends more realism to the setting and the story. Vehicle Voltron team is one part of a Galaxy Alliance fleet, they have support crew and commanders.
Larger age range and social/political/military roles: characters range in age from teens to young adults to middle aged adults to old age. This is another facet of the realism that balances the story. The commanders in charge (such as Hawkins) are not teens nor young adults. They have experience and wisdom. This sets up believable chains of command and obstacles for the protagonists at different layers of the story. Jeff, Cliff, and Krik may lead the teams that make up Vehicle Voltron but they still have to answer to Commander Hawkins and Captain Newley. And while Hawkins and Newley may command the S.S. Explorer, but they are still beholden to orders from the much older admirals from the Galaxy Garrison. The same goes for the antagonists, where Hazar may be a commander with his own ships and soldiers, but Marshal Keezor, Viceroy Throk, and even subordinate captains are obstacles to his ideas for peace with the humans.
Thus, I would instead look to the remakes of The Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Space Battleship Yamato to inform remake of Vehicle Voltron (note: remake does not equal reboot, I’m done with reboots).
Tumblr media
Especially for the visual style of Yamato (above) as Nobuteru Yuki’s character designs are fantastic and rarely suffer from ’same face’ syndrome and go beyond a handful of body types.
Tumblr media
Both of these stories are space operas with large casts featuring a wide range of age and rank, and Yamato has several different alien species represented in the story amongst both protagonists and antagonists (though they are the ‘humanoid’ type so monster-lovers would be let down).
Tumblr media
Both LotGH and Yamato utilize a diversity of ages and ranks to great effect. It makes their stories richer and deeper. This is something that I would very much want to see preserved and expanded in a remake of Vehicle Voltron.
Tumblr media
Yamato also handles ‘weird sci-fi scenarios’ and far-fetched technology pretty damn well. I don’t otherwise know how to describe the story in the Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark film, but it’s top notch science-fiction that would work in both Star Trek and Vehicle Voltron.
Tumblr media
Likewise, the political maneuvering and philosophy that drives the plot in LotGH would be right at home in Star Trek and Vehicle Voltron. Having a large cast is crucial to that.
Tumblr media
That Star Trek comparison is important, because the biggest difference between Vehicle Voltron and Lion Voltron can be summed up as: “Star Trek vs Star Wars.” Star Trek and Star Wars are superficially similar to the casual viewer, but they are very different kinds of story requiring different writing styles and direction.
Tumblr media
So, the challenge in either a remake or reboot lies in how to balance the genre conventions of a space opera with a Super Robot Combining Mecha thrown in. It doesn’t matter if the robot has 3 pilots or 15, there is a mismatch between super robots and space opera. As biased as I am towards loving Vehicle Voltron (and its source anime, Dairugger XV), it’s a hard sell and harder to write well.
The biggest changes would probably require less super robot fights (thus changing the monster-of-the-week format), and less episodes overall since we are in the age of ‘short seasons’. Once those two things happen, the story is dangerously close to falling apart. This brings me back to LotGH and Yamato, as it would take serious writing skills and experience to pull this off and be a success. And that experience (with both mecha and space opera genres) may as well be non-existent in the West. That doesn’t mean that Western animation writers/directors/creative team/etc don’t have talent (they obviously do), it’s just that this kind of story isn’t one that is common in live action, let alone animation. I’ll be the elitist that wants writers with a mecha and space opera background writing a VV remake.
This brings me back to the part about the characters:
I don’t see much need to drastically change character arcs or personalities in a remake, except where its a matter of updating for the times, and removing things that are best left in the 80s. However, I would definitely do what VLD and Yamato and LotGH have done with changing genders and ethnicities, and I would preserve Vehicle Voltron’s large cast in order to maintain the age range and social/political/military roles.
Vehicle Voltron already had more ethnicity and gender representation than Lion Voltron (for its time), but I would take that farther. That is something that is important to me for a lot media. One of the great things about having a very large cast, is that it provides more breathing room for inclusion.
While that means that not every character gets a large role (Do they really need one to tell a story? Not in space opera they don’t.), it also means that a careful writer is less likely to end up in a situation where there is only one example of a character with particular sets of under-represented traits combined with narrative choices that seem like a good idea but could be hurtful to an audience for reasons outside of the story (e.g. the only black character is also the only racist, or the multi-minority LGBT character is the only one to perpetually go through hell, etc).
In other words, there are fertile fields for multiple kinds of representation in Vehicle Voltron with its 15 pilots, dozens of S.S. Explorer crew members, dozens of other Galaxy Alliance personnel, other fleets that appear, and among the antagonists as well. I would add another species to co-exist with the Drule, and expand upon the two species represented in the Galaxy Garrison (Krik and Cinda’s people, and Wolo and Tagor’s people). I would not rely on aliens for ethnicity representation (that’s a cheat), but age, gender, ability, and LGBT inclusion would certainly fit.
Like Star Trek, the space and future setting of Vehicle Voltron allows for diversity without present day concerns, but that does not mean that the writing should avoid those concerns and how they intersect with identity and representation. Viewers are living those concerns and are likely not watching a space opera set in the future with giant robots to be reminded of them (intentionally or accidentally).
I have other ideas that are specifically for the characters, but that will have to wait for another day.
Image credit: stills are from my own screenshots of Space Battleship Yamato (mostly 2199 and 2202) with one or two scrounged from the web, and the animated gifs are from LotGH (their respective gif makers shown below the gif).

LGBT representation in Voltron
UPDATED: I realized I wasn’t coming off as neutrally as I’d like and there were hints of shipping peeking through. I also didn’t feel I had expanded properly on certain aspects. I’d like this particular post to be as neutral as  possible so that it’s accessible to people from all ships and headcanons.
I’ve seen a lot of discussion lately about LGBT representation in Voltron. From shipping wars to insistent demands that headcanons be fulfilled, it’s all getting a little bonkers. I wanted to step back, encourage everyone to take a breather, and discuss the potential of any LGBT on the show, including and excluding popular expectations. So here we go, a post on LGBT representation in Voltron and in cartoons, and why it's not as simple as we'd like it to be. It’s a little long but don’t worry, there are pictures! AND A COMIC!
DISCLAIMER: I do not work on Voltron, nor do I work for Dreamworks or any of its properties. I'm just an animator who's worked on dozens of cartoons for a number of studios and the following is based on my experience in this industry. This post is NOT meant to indict any of the parties involved in the creation of Voltron or other cartoons. Making cartoons is a complicated, collaborative process and no one is a villain.
Here we go:
Before we can talk about LGBT rep & Voltron, we should probably talk about LGBT representation in cartoons in general. In case it isn't clear, I'm speaking specifically about Western cartoons that primarily air in Canada/US. Anime is a whole other category and one that Voltron does not fall under. I'm also removing cartoons that were made explicitly for adults.
LGBT in cartoons is a really recent development. If we include adult cartoons it can date back as far as 20 years (South Park showcasing some SUPER GREAT gay stereotypes :|) but if we're including cartoons geared towards kids (age 5-17)... we're talking this being a thing in the last FOUR years. And the number of times it's been done is so minimal, it can be summed up in these few images:
Tumblr media
(left to right, top to bottom) 6Teen, 2010 CANADA ONLY - An incidental female character revealed she liked women. I don’t think this show ever aired in the States but it ran on Teletoon for years. The show also had an episode with an incidental gay character in 2008. Gravity Falls, 2013 - The sheriff and deputy are repeatedly hinted at being in a relationship. I believe in the series finale their relationship is more clearly identified. It was later confirmed by the show’s creator.
Legend of Korra, 2014 - The two female leads, after having previously dated the same male character, are strongly implied to now be dating each other as they hold hands and walk into the Spirit World together. This was as explicit as they were allowed to get with their relationship. The comics continue their relationship romantically and also highlight other characters from both series who are (or were) LGBT). Steven Universe, 2013 - The show doesn’t shy away from its LGBT romances, in particular Ruby and Sapphire and Pearl and Rose.  Star vs The Forces of Evil, 2017 - in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it panning shot, two background male characters are seen kissing.  Clarence, 2013 - The main character has two moms. In one episode, a handsome male background character is shown greeting another man for a date by kissing him on the cheek. Initially they were supposed to peck on the lips until other countries’ censors demanded the change. Loud House, 2016 - The main character’s best friend, Clyde, has two dads.
I’m also going to toss out an Honourable Mention to Adventure Time for Princess Bubblegum & Marceline, whose past romantic relationship was sort of hinted at in the show but only confirmed outside of it.
If we take that list and cut it down to just (broadcast TV) primary or recurring characters, we're left with this: Korra, Steven Universe, Clarence
I should also mention that while I repeatedly use the term LGBT, what I’m really referring to is more LGB. I would love to see a trans character in a broadcast cartoon. I’ve heard Amazon’s Danger & Eggs has a trans character, which is AMAZING and a solid start. However progressively speaking, broadcast cartoons tend to lag a little behind live action TV and movies aimed at older teens and adults, and those genres are still struggling to feature trans characters.
So why is this?
Firstly, and more importantly, a lot of these shows air in countries that aren't nearly as open about LGBT as USA/Canada are. To say "screw those guys! They should keep up with the times!!" is to cut out a major consumer base and most companies are unwilling or unable to take that financial hit. This doesn't make them evil. Animation, just like filmmaking, may be an artform but it is first and foremost a BUSINESS. Major companies like Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network won’t lose money, but the production studios they hire to do their shows will suffer the brunt of it and could lose the business of these powerful corporations. It’s happened time and time again that a show initially animated in the US or Canada has been taken away from that studio in favor of a cheaper, overseas option. In some cases they’ve closed.
Second, even in 2018 there is still a lot of pushback from homophobic or “family-oriented” groups with decent clout and numbers. Also, there is a strange pervasive idea that LGBT is something that is Not For Children, likely because too many foolish people still associate heteronormativity with love and everything outside of that with sex.
Additionally, you may have noticed that on the list of the three shows showcasing LGBT relationships in a primary or recurring character way... ALL of them feature women. The social discussion about why that is honestly merits an entire other post (or 5) so to put it plainly, broadly speaking, people tend to be more comfortable with female queerness over male queerness. We have yet to see a m/m relationship that has any iota of history or character development behind it, or a recurring queer male character.
With this in mind, Voltron, which features a primarily male cast, and thus has more chances of featuring a male LGBT character, has its work cut out for it.
___________________________________________________
Fresh off the heels of Korra, a series that in the 11th hour featured the two female leads ending up with each other, it's no surprise that showrunners Lauren Montgomery and Joaquin Dos Santos( along with other cast and crew) have fielded a barrage of questions about their intention to depict LGBT on the show. At NYCC when asked about it, this was JDS & LM's response: "It's very important to us... we’re fighting to create as open and as broad a spectrum of characters as we can."
Which is a pretty interesting way of putting it, and a pretty understandably CAREFUL way of putting it. Again, I want to reiterate, I don’t work for any studio involved in the production of Voltron so this is largely conjecture.
So here's how the hierarchy works, as far as I can tell.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure who approached who to get a new Voltron made, but primary creative decisions would fall to JDS and LM, who are in charge of things like major plot points, characters, and arcs. When they've figured this stuff out, they pitch it in a multitude of sessions with Dreamworks People... and that's when the battle begins. Pitching a show is always a tug-of-war. Let's be clear: No creator has ever gone in with a show and walked away with every single aspect that they wanted. Compromises and concessions are made because while the Creatives are focused on their story and character, their client is concerning themselves with budget, timelines, audience targets and $$marketing$$. Before they even got to the matter of LGBT, JDS/LM had lost and won battles over some plot and character decisions. You can actually feel it sometimes when you watch the show; key emotional moments that never happen, or character stuff that gets shaved in favor of action or the reuse animation of the lions forming Voltron.
Tumblr media
This show is still aimed at a young, male, market Dreamworks wants to believe is going to buy their incredibly limited line of related toys, and that is a market that is difficult for executives to see as being interested in romance, let alone a queer one.
The point is, as much as JDS/LM seem to want LGBT in their show, it is a negotiation that I'm sure has been on the table since Day 1 and probably one that is ongoing. Here's a vague idea of what MAY have gone down:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dreamworks: We will consider the idea of two of them in a relationship, but the third has got to go. JDS/LM: .....we appreciate you considering the relationship aspect. Dreamworks: In addition, we feel that to balance the scales so to speak, at least one character needs to be overtly heterosexual. You know, hit on a lot of female characters, maybe even fall for one of them.
(sorry would have finished the comic but I sprained my wrist and I’m not supposed to draw rn but I cheated a little, also can you tell I love Saga)
This is very probably not what happened, but it is an example of what could have. I know there is a lot of support for a certain character in Voltron being bi, not least of all because of something LM drew.
Tumblr media
I think the placement of the characters holding the signs were less about associating the character with the header and more about making sure neither of the two warring ships were represented; it would have incited a new level on the shipping wars and the message and intent behind this art would have been lost.
There is a weird association with relationships and how they define a show if they aren’t hetero. Have only one relationship on a show about space battles and if it’s LGBT, people will start associating Voltron with being “the gay space battle show”. I don’t want to get into Discourse about This Thing because debate gets lost quickly in favor of toxic insults, but I think it’s important to touch on Bi!Lance. To be entirely neutral about it, it is possible that Lance was originally intended to be bi. But if there was the potential for other characters to be LGBT, the showrunners might have been asked to “strike a balance” so to speak, so that Voltron wouldn’t just be “the gay space battle” show since its hetero relationships would outnumber the queer ones. I don’t think Lance’s character has changed at all since his inception; the show needs a funnyman for levity and ridiculousness, and he is absolutely the charmer of the Paladins. He may have been intended to hit on just about any attractive being in his orbit (there are shades of what one might call a “man-crush” in regards to his Shiro hero-worship). While it would have been awesome to have a bi male character in a cartoon, changing his attraction dial from “all” to “female” doesn’t really affect his storyline, especially since it’s hard to contest that the show has been angling in potential for endgame Allurance in seasons 3&4. I realize that sounds dismissive of the bi experience, that’s really not what I’m trying to get at. I’m saying that in the grand scheme of things, it may have been easier to sacrifice an LGBT Lance in order to win another LGBT representation battle. Like I said, making cartoons that maintain the creative, storyline, and character goals you walk in with is a tug-of-war, and you’re going to lose something along the way.
But it’s not all about Lance, and again, that’s all theoretical. It’s also possible that Pidge was at one point NB or even trans. There are hints of Coran having a close friendship with Alfor. The original blue paladin is hinted at flirting with a fellow male character in a “did he just--” moment that most people missed. Lotor surrounds himself with female generals but never seems particularly attracted to them. Keith’s undying devotion to Shiro could be interpreted as romantic. There are a dozen main characters whose orientations are nebulous at best and thus have potential to be queer.
So what does this mean for the future of LGBT on Voltron?
The short version is: I'm actually, really, really hopeful. For a number of reasons.
1) JDS/LM as they've said, are fighting really hard for this to be a thing. Jeremy Shada has said "You'll be really happy" when asked about LGBT on the show. People may feel he’s referring to his character Lance, but I think he’s just hoping that people will be happy with any character who could be explicitly stated to be LGBT.
2) Netflix isn't a TV broadcaster, which means they can operate under somewhat different rules. Sort of. They certainly don't shy away from LGBT content but they may be regulated under rules of "what is appropriate for children in certain age groups" which frustratingly, for kids 12 and under, does not often include LGBT content. Netflix notoriously doesn't release their viewership data so this is just speculation; but I wonder if the biggest audience taking in this show is actually people, primarily women, aged 14+. Taking this into account won't influence the plot, but the bumped up age could show an increased likelihood of LGBT rep as it pushes the show outside of the "content too sensitive for young children" zone.
3) It would be really nice to see explicit, unambiguous affection between two same-sex characters. However there can still be canonical queer romance without it, shades enough of “just friendship” that they can get past the censors and bigots while those who are more aware of what’s going on can recognize the relationship for what it is. Remember, some people still refuse to believe that Victor and Yuuri kissed in Yuuri on Ice, all thanks to the clever placement of an arm. Furthermore, LGBT doesn’t have to be portrayed through relationships but just the character itself. A character could make a passing comment that alludes to their sexuality. It’s not quite as satisfying as having it out in the open, but DW’s hands may be tied by the stipulations of the contract outlined by Netflix.
4) Despite what certain world events would have you believe, people are becoming more progressive and supportive of LGBT rights and content. We've seen it happen in movies and live-action television. More and more cartoons are going to be including LGBT content, in broader and more overt ways. There will be other cartoons who feature main characters who identify as LGBT, recurring characters in LGBT relationships who are allowed to be affectionate and cutesy with their partners, who are represented no differently or reverently than hetero cartoon romances. Voltron will likely end within the next two years, and within those next two years more and more cartoons will be taking "risks" and more and more broadcasters will feel emboldened to allow them to do so. If Dreamworks keeps its content steadfastly heterosexual while fellow producers embrace LGBT, it's going to reflect badly on them.
People are desperate for representation in this show and it’s not hard to see why. It is not only one of the few serial cartoons out there, but one that deals with surprisingly adult themes considering it’s aimed at elementary schoolers. I think it’s really neat that people have so many headcanons about the LGBT rep in this show, and I think it’s great that it’s an element that has sparked a lot of passion in people. However, everything is still conjecture, the series is but half over, and putting all your LGBT demands onto one character or one relationship is unhealthy. It’s also pretty insidious to attack or harass crew, cast, or fellow fans whose views on how the LGBT should happen don’t align with your own. The show’s arcs and plot points have been written, the characters decided, but the internal fight over LGBT rep could still be going on. The creators aren’t going to cave to pressure from people who really want their ship or their character to be the sacred cow. Ship what you want to ship but recognize that while LGBT on the show may not happen the way you’d like it to, it’s still important to support its existence no matter what form it comes in.
In the next part I’m going to cover one relationship in particular as neutrally as possible and whether or not it has potential to become canonically romantic.
