I have never played persona so I wasn't sure if I would understand your failteacher comics but I just looked up the characters for a little bit of context and I'm 👀👀👀👀 at it now xD

Without being too spoiler-y, why would you say they'd have a messy relationship? (Besides the fact of Becky taking advantage of her client's loneliness)

HAHAHA yea i think the like dramatic irony enjoyment of knowing (even just roughly) what's going on with becky is very strong so good on you there (obviously toriumi has no idea what's going on with her and becky is doing her best to Handle It, but it contextualizes her behavior for Us...<3)

anyway, the rest of this very long post is just me analyzing a fictional situation i myself engineered, so if that sounds boring please dont click the Read More LMFAO <- cursed to put a lot of thought into Character Stuff

basically they have great potential for mess, which they're Currently keeping a lid on, but would exponentially increase with time. teehee.

as for what WILL happen, im not spoiling anything concrete of course… (winks at the Knowers who already know my Vision….

well, this AU isn't ever going to devolve into a "super destructive toxic nightmare" mess or anything, just to get our working definitions of 'mess' sorted out at the top of the post. not this time. atm (as of comic #3) it's shaping up more like a "this seems . inadvisable and absolutely Don't Try This At Home, but i guess it won't…kill you" mess (LMAO)

to assess their situation at present… there is one half who wants money (and can't ever make enough of it to satisfy her extortionists), and one half who wants intimacy (and is scared and unable to get it on her own). on its exterior face, it's simply a lonely person hiring a professional to keep them company, which is a fairly common thing n not rly super noteworthy; the parentheticals are what make things a bit uh thorny for these characters

the "problem" here is not the transaction itself; they're both willing to supply their half of the trade just fine, and neither party is doing anything wrong by engaging in it. but for these two specifically, there is also a mutual willingness to bend the rules of their transaction—because they're both cornered in some way, and desperate for what the other one is offering to trade

to elaborate on "rules", i mean, first and foremost, that their relationship is not "real"—these people Don't know each other personally and intimately, and they're Not Supposed To. their relationship should never be "real"; they're not friends! (or lovers, for that matter!) they're in a conditional exchange of money for services. right now, these characters are participating in and maintaining a kayfabe; they should operate under a tacit understanding that A) this is not real, B) they both fully know it's not real, and C) following the script is the comfortable way to get what they both want without causing undue risk to either party. creating and then maintaining a fake "reality" together is regulated by a contract between them, and it ends when their booked time ends (and not a minute over time!)

but to return to the earlier point, they're also both cornered and desperate, which drives them both to go beyond what might be considered appropriate. i think this is compelling; it's probably unnecessary of me to add this paragraph but i want to underline (just in case) that i don't think either of them is like "at fault" or w/e (there is no "villain" between them). they're showing Signs Of Mess that could snowball into something much more messy, but it's not something they're doing to hurt each other; they're making decisions based on skewed risk/reward estimations that might not be healthy, and could realistically have harmful consequences for both parties, but they're not, like, Evil (lol). two women getting wrapped up in each other's personal graveyard spirals…it's yuri, isn't it?

with that squared away, and putting it plainly;

toriumi should not be asking her to "break character" when the character itself is what she's paying for; this nudging of their little kayfabe, if indulged, could easily snowball and erode the professional boundaries between them (what she calls "distance" in #3). she is paying 'becky' to 'be here' (paying kawakami to conjure 'becky' into existence by pretending to be her), but she isn't really being mindful of the type of role that this necessarily demands of her in turn. the built-in emotional walls between them are there to protect both of them, but she doesn't fully respect them (despite instinctively sensing their protection in how "safe" becky feels to her). in the end, toriumi is bad at "staying in character" herself, and she can't help but try to root out the actual person behind the mask—despite the fact that no one wants this erosion to happen! possible dire consequences for her wallet aside, losing sight of the line between "transaction" and "investment" (pardon the pun) is a one-way ticket to a very messy place where one or both of them is likely to get hurt...

on the other end, and not helping the situation at all, kawakami identified toriumi as a soft target pretty much immediately, and is actively trying to elicit sympathy and endear herself to her (she is being quite choosy about what vulnerabilities she "lets slip" in #2) in order to make her keep booking and paying. of course some amount of "salesmanship" is part of the job—#grindset always be plugging smash that like button comment n subscribe—but the major difference here is that she's overtly attempting to foster in her client the exact kind of dependency/personal attachment she should be discouraging (for, frankly, both of their safety). like not only is she out fishing to get toriumi hook line and sinker on purpose, but it's also alarmingly reckless behavior on kawakami's part; there's a lack of regard for her own wellbeing involved here on top of it all. again, a messy place where someone, maybe everyone, gets hurt in the end

crucially though, as comic #3 finishes setting up, they're both willing to endure these shenanigans from the other half. at this stage, toriumi does realize that kawakami has her unilaterally wrapped around her finger, and nonetheless agrees that she'll call her again; while kawakami knows very well how this kayfabe is supposed to work, but is indulgent (even rewarding) towards toriumi for her clumsiness. that mutual willingness to keep playing this game would—if the AU continued on these tracks uninterrupted—probably compound until the situation they've made becomes super confusing and unclear for them emotionally...

of course "taking advantage" is sort of a loaded phrase colloquially… but i would say in many ways they are "taking advantage" of each other, yea. the "we both benefit, so it's okay" logic was already vaguely raised as justification in #3; if elaborated a bit with the above in mind, their situation is one where "even if they're both overstepping what is considered appropriate for their arrangement, they've also both decided the benefits outweigh the costs by a wide enough margin to make it worthwhile"

it's got the marks of a sort of symbiotic relationship... their individual motivations for being involved w each other are totally unrelated (cue the "hold on, does. kawakami even like women???" question), but they both feel they benefit enough towards their priority goals to be OK with the other one taking something "less valuable" from them (toriumi even calls out the “sales pitch” becky is doing in #2, but ultimately decides that’s fine because she’s willing to buy). i think each and every moving part here has great capacity to go "too far" and ruin things (perhaps even causing Severe damage in the collapse), but if the situation were to continue in this same rhythm, without that kind of dramatic change, i would say "they're both evaluating the scenario with their own personal goals in mind, and are extracting what they want from one another relatively(?) peacefully(??)". like it might ultimately be a selfish game but they're adults they'll figure it out probably idk its none of my business what they choose to get up to. wouldn't get into that type of shit myself though LOL

women are playing kind of dangerous games with each other but i forgive them because it's interesting to rotate in my mind...<3

another thorn to consider for their future bonding endeavors from here on ofc is that without being "cornered" the way they are, they would not be running this type of "risk math" in the first place. it's hard for either of them to fully back away at this point because they're already cornered in their personal lives; toriumi is incredibly isolated and lonely with a pretty insecure lifestyle even when she's NOT actively sawing through the branch she's sitting on, and kawakami famously MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, NEEDS A LOT OF MONEY RIGHT NOW because she's being extorted by an unrelated third party. looking ahead it does kind of start to look like an ouroboros of "taking advantage of each other" bc it's hard for both of them to leave their individual situations; it's kind of like, if they weren't here with each other they'd be ... well, they'd be here—just with someone else...

they didn't put each other in this jam—it was unrelated personal circumstances and sheer coincidence that pushed them together—but now that they've committed to each other, it's hard to reverse back out, if that makes sense. i think that kind of thing is interesting too, because it makes me want to see them recognize this, connect, and help each other pull out of their Greater individual personal messes. you know? we can make it if we try... just the two of us... 😔

(unfortunately step 1 of that is ofc to make a genuine personal bond that isn't wrapped up in all this for-pay roleplay stuff. drat!)

tl;dr they're both simmering under high pressure and don't try this at home, but they do already have a sort of tacit agreement forming that this level of messy play is OK between them—as long as the rewards continue to outweigh the risks. at the end of the day, it's a delicate balance ultimately hinging on a money-for-services transaction, so if either of them stopped feeling like paying their half was worth it, it would rapidly come apart. i guess it's kinda like the ways you can tell if animals are genuinely beefing or just playing rough—are they willingly coming back? 💀 ...

no lmao where's that post thats like "this would be terrible if it was anyone else, but considering the people involved this is actually the best option" HRBHJDJG that's kind of how it feels. like if they're gonna be stuck with Somebody (and they would be), its probably good luck that they got Each Other. at least the narrative can sustain the balance of this one and maybe even solve it down the line. heart

to round this post off i would say if i had to nominate one of them, kawakami is probably the most "in control" atm—since she figured out very quickly that she was dealing with an easy mark and moved in to make her a regular customer (quite successfully i might add per the end of #3 lmaoo). i think that's been kinda fun, since in her SLink she's immediately on the back foot due to being unmasked by the inciting incident. we know she will lie and attempt to play to the listener's sympathy, so unleashing her with her Mask Still On has been fun 😭 for her part, toriumi is not only taken with the funny maid (& emotionally invested in her IRL situation to boot), but also very clumsily trying to obtain something she's scared to have, which makes her very impulsive/erratic in her rulebreaking compared to kawakami's much more intentional plays...

of course, my future plans will immediately jostle this entire dynamic into something else and make this whole post obsolete, but i don't wanna lay that out ahead of time. smiles.

anyway we start with the

✨ fabulous killjoys ✨

they're the main characters of the ALBUM danger days. also referred to as the fab four. they are members of the larger group simply called the killjoys, played a key role in the analog wars (we'll get to it) and take care of the girl (we'll get to her) the fab four's whole deal is eloquently described by straengeaeons as "they hate capitalism and blow stuff up about it." they're portrayed by the members of mcr in the music videos so ill go ahead and introduce them to u now since their names are decently important going forward we got

party poison - leader of the fab four, he's the only one to have two different masks (the whole masks thing we'll get to later), both pictured above, the second ones called the mousekat store that in ur brainhole not really sure if i'll mention it later. also definitely the one im going to write the most about because spoiler alert these idiots die in like 10 minutes and they dont have a ton of personality to go off of unless you wanna start theorizing hard and i dont feel like that right now

jet star - helpfully labeled for your convenience

fun ghoul - you can't see it well but his mask is like....a really shitty party city zombie mask.

kobra kid - i think its pretty widely accepted fanon that he and party poison are brothers since they're portrayed by mikey and gerard in the music videos. neat.

alongside the fab four we got some other important people (im also going to start using comic panels for these guys cuz the fab four dont have any great comic pictures)

korse - he works as a s/c/a/r/e/c/r/o/w for BLind (better living industries) who have basically taken over the world or at least north america to our knowledge. their capital in a sense is battery city. dont think i mentioned it but this all takes place in post apocalyptic 2019 (the album came out in 2010 ok) around where la is today. anyway back to korse scarecrows are basically really deadly assassins and hes a bit silly. slightly murderous. its ok though he's gay and gets a redemption arc.

dr. death defying - he shows up a bit in the mvs but the pics arent great so im just using comic. hes a dj and has close ties to the fab four, also is vaguely possibly omnipotent? hes a veteran of the analog wars and all around chill great guy. love dr d.

cherri cola - also a dj, has this like. chill uncle energy that matches dr ds very well. really wants to be a dad like so bad. he was a part of the og killjoys with the fab four but didnt die with them and has a little tiny bit of survivors guilt abt that. just a smidge. i like him hes cool

the girl - she doesnt have a name lmao just the girl. very important small child, she's like 6 at the time when the fab four die. her mom was like the leader of the resistance group the killjoys were part of during the analog wars and party poison at least believes that she's going to save them all someday. also the comic panel is her when shes like 16 hence the fact that she looks violently different

the director - shes the head of BLind so like. very evil. but shes also kinda hot so i forgive the capitalism and the war crimes. uhhh other than that there's draculoids which are these guys with the masks

the masks basically mind control ppl to make them BLinds personal cannon fodder im kinda tired so i might continue this later and actually get into plot but other than stuff i want to talk abt later im pretty sure thats all you'd need to get into the mvs at least

| Appearance: His main outfit is a short sleeved white crop top with dark blue denim overalls, he then wears some old worn out black boots, in fact his outfit in general looks worn out, the overalls are distressed and have a good amount of holes in them, the shoes are scuffed but hey- the outfit is still wearable- as long as it's still wearable- he’ll wear until the outfit and boots are completely destroyed p much- he doesn’t mind going barefoot for a while- he’s VERY much used to being barefoot, the shoes just help keep those prickly things from sticking his feet.

| Personality: Well he’s definitely not the brightest nor the sharpest tool in the shed but he works hard not smart lmao, he’s very respectful though, sweet, kind, caring, and very loving- He hasn’t got a cruel, evil, or bad bone in his body- He’s not even intentionally mean but due to his size and overwhelming strength lots of folks are scared of him unfortunately, it can be a good thing and a bad thing- a lotta folks are too afraid to approach him but also thieves or poachers or any bad folks won’t DARE mess with him, he’s scared off t o n s of criminals before.

Despite having overwhelming strength that a human probably shouldn’t have (he IS still human tho) he’s extremely gentle and you’d see that firsthand with any of his animals especially-

He cares DEEPLY and greatly for all his animals and he holds them so gently (imagine bc of how big n wide I said he was, just imagine a very tiny baby chicken in his massive hands) he holds them so sweetly and gently, loves all his babies- I’ll get into their names in side facts but the basics of him is just he’s very kind, respectful, sweet, loving, and caring- very polite and just works on his ranch/farm to make an honest living that’s it, accidentally intimidating but it can be a good thing sometimes, INHUMANLY strong- like he can lift things humans should REALLY NOT be able to but he can.

| Side Facts: Okay let’s see, Festus has a HUGE draft horse named Billy Bob, a goat named Shirlene, she’s very feisty and usually don’t take too kindly to strangers meaning she’ll charge them, has some chickens named Debbie, Shelby, Earlene, and Tabitha- has more but I’d be here all day if I named ALL the animals, has some cows named Tammie, he has a few bulls but one in particular is a bull named Bucky who even charges Festus if he’s not careful, Annabelle who also doesn’t like strangers none too well, and then finally an absolute sweetheart of a cow named Patty Sue she loves everyone.

Bucky usually protects Patty Sue, that's mostly why he charges Festus lmao- He figures Bucky is sweet on her- some geese named Billy Ray and Bobby Joe their brothers and have protected Festus and the other animals many a times before, a donkey named Bo for more protection, and to wrap up the animal names (there’s so many I literally can’t sit here and name them all …UNLESS you genuinely want me to compile the list) he’s got a bluetick hound named Skeeter, a bloodhound named Copper, a border collie named Wyatt, and finally two tiny chihuahuas he rescued from the side of the road when they were literal babies.

Now, there’s not much that can actually upset or piss Festus off but anyone and he means ANYONE who hurts, dumps out, or is just hateful toward animals that’s when he gets much more serious, unintentionally aggressive but he can’t STAND animal abusers- those two tiny babies he rescued are named Chester and Fifi (ya can’t hardly separate the two, they need each other) …they also run the house compared to the other big dogs lmao

Festus is admittedly v e r y clumsy and breaks things VERY easily, he can’t help it- he’s a really big fella- That’s why it's so contrast to see him with animals because he’s SO much more calculated, careful, and cautious even in his movements- He’s… less so with people but that don’t mean he wants to hurt someone-

Just sometimes he can accidentally start crushing his friends in a hug- he of course immediately lets go and takes off his hat and apologizes but he can’t help it, he’s a big guy with too much strength and a LOT of love to give- Anytime he rough houses with any of his siblings that may come over you can tell he’s holding back his strength like TENFOLD but even then he still manages to beat them.

It’s rare his siblings or family come over at all though, they all live a LONG way from his farm so yeye, him and his family have a great relationship though- no problems here for once! Festus would say he lives alone but honestly he never feels alone with all the animals he’s got tbh.

Festus doesn’t have many things, I won’t say he’s EXTREMELY poor or anything but he’s not the most wealthy either, he doesn’t have video games- he doesn’t have enough time for stuff like that anyways, he’s got crops to grow and harvest and then animals to feed and take care of, he does have a few books here and there, scattered around (his house is a bit messy, nothing too bad but still) and then he’s got a TV with an antenna still attached to it, so he gets a few channels.

Very old fashioned-centric of a house and just doesn’t care for too much technology really- the only other ‘electronic’ type thing he’s got is a radio where he listens to a LOT of old country music …Festus does not like new country music bc most of it just sings about beer, pickup trucks, and just- stupid shit- He ain’t about that, one of his favorites is Alan Jackson (he really loves Blue Ridge Mountain Song specifically, makes him cry tbh), loves the charlie daniels band, just- theres a lot- and surprisingly enough- he seems to really love heavy metal/rock too

Festus has a banjo that he loves to play occasionally, especially on cool starry nights, looking at the full moon he’ll just bust out the banjo and start playing some soft gentle tones, sometimes his hounds will decide to sing along, howling as he plays.

so far in bg3 ive beaten the goblin camp and am holding off on doing the tiefling party until i get more affection. (im TOO indecisive and aroallo and polyam for this what do you MEAN i cant just sleep w any of the characters i want without having to get into their full on romance routes. dont tell me every single one of these characters wants that deep emotional connection or w/e like come on 😭) and i have id say. more than half the companions now? so recording my thoughts. normally i make little posts while i game but bg3 is so addicting i couldnt even open tumblr to talk abt it. i played it for almost 12 hours i think today (with breaks in between but STILL). which is why this is so long im rambling abt everything since i started the game

i feel like me and shadowheart have a good thing going rn if she were more physically my type i think id be certain on romancing her. im attached to her we’ve been together since the start of the game (i didnt find any of the other companions until after i went to the druid grove and had made it to the goblin camp LMAO i didnt realize they were all just right there). shes very pragmatic but i also notice she approves occasionally when im nice. i like her <3 we’re besties we’re a Team

i found astarion second and. yeah i get why hes tumblr’s favorite. hes an evil flirty fruity vampire. he has white hair and pronouns. that bloodsucking scene might as well have just been a sex scene. i enjoy him in my party (actually hes my fav character to play as, i love dashing around and stabbing and vampire biting people. i originally thought id have him as kind of a spellcaster but i even paid to respec him to have more mobility spells/traits. also hes my go-to for picking locks and disarming traps, w items and keeping him fed ive gotten him up to +7 sleight of hand, it was 9 before but i think i might have accidentally removed a bonus when respeccing him lmao. hes like the most useful of my party outside of combat. anyway) and im a lesbian but im literally torn on whether or not i should accept his proposition at the tiefling party bc hes just so entertaining. i might full on romance him in another save. but the thing w him is that im a monsterfucker sure (karlach 💞) but i dont like his moral compass it makes conversations w him so difficult to navigate it stresses me out. like im playing a self-insert and kind of just choosing the options i choose right. but he probably thinks all my dialogue options are too soft and weak and wishy-washy💔 like sorry i dont think idolizing absolute power is a good thing bro. even if i get why hed be obsessed w power after 200 years of utterly lacking any. doesnt mean i have to agree w his cynicism

on that topic thats why im utterly enamored w karlach💗💗 i love her. like of all the romancable characters i genuinely would enjoy dating her. if it werent for my emotional attachment to shadowheart after being w her so long itd be a no brainer. like at the beginning i just wanted her in my party bc shes a hot buff demon lady. but shes such a joy??? her zest for even the little things in life like her dialogue w shadowheart abt nature. her just cheerfully dancing in camp. shes boisterous and passionate and enthusiastic. also shes the only one of the characters i like who approves when i go out of my way to help people and when i brainwashed this monster into cannibalizing its pack (fucked up but i didnt wanna fight the whole horde And it) shadowheart and astarion approved but she Disapproved, and idk it just feels like a breath of fresh air to see someone who’s more openly just held on to goodness after everything shes gone through, after shadowheart’s and astarion’s disregard for other people. i need to find her a mechanic to fix her engine but i dont think i can go to the tiefling camp without triggering the party scene so. 💔

i dont really like gale tbh. i mean i dont Not like him he was fine to have in my party but as soon as karlach came along it was an easy choice to kick him out. his storyline is interesting from what ive seen but i feel like. im just not charmed by him lol. i failed a roll while he was trying to teach me magic in this probably romantic scene but he just cut it off there and i didnt bother savescumming to reroll. i also have met wyll but yeah hes fine. kind of the goody type from what ive seen and hes nice enough im also just not charmed. truly i think its just that im a lesbian but i find these two boring in comparison to the three above. ive also found halsin and hes abt to join my party but i made my character a druid already so hes kinda redundant😭 i googled it and hes the only one whos down w polyamory which is so sad bc i can see why people who like men find him hot but i dont, why couldnt any of the three companions i actually like let me date multiple people 😭😭 sadness. i wish it was like sdv where you can date everyone w no consequences as long you exclude one person. i dont like any of the guys except astarion please bg3😭😭😭

ok i gotta talk abt my bg3 playthough w/o twitters character limit cuz this has been on my mind

SO im at the beginning of act 2, into the shadow cursed lands. got through the beginning just fine, went to the last light inn, did all that, prevented isobel from being abducted (which im v proud of cuz i killed a handful of the winged beasts or w/e they were called and had cast lightning bolt to take some down, but then i realized u lost the encounter if isobel got knocked out and was like "well im not wasting a lv. 3 spell slot on this fight if shes just gonna get taken anyway" which quickly became "well in that case im not fuckin letting her get taken then!!!" and it took me 2 lightning bolts and astarion being downed like 4 times but i DID IT)

*ahem* anyway, i prevented isobel from being abducted, and the mission after that is finding out how the cultists traverse the shadow curse and doing the whole ambush. NOW i already knew there was a dialogue w/ kar'niss cuz ive seen clips from "evil" playthroughs where ppl were interqacting w/ him and ive also seen ppl simping for him (and just for the record: smash) so after just letting the ambush happen and initiating battle and seeing his level and hp, i was like "lets see if theres an easier way to do this"

so i reloaded and decided to make myself known. i lied that the absolute protected me and told kar'niss that she wanted me to have his lanturn, then told him to go on. cuz im a sorcerer, i took the option to fake a protection spell on them, and man. i did not fucking expect kar'niss' screams to be so gut-wrenching. my heart dropped hearing him plead. i dont regret it and i will be doing the same thing on future playthroughs where possible cuz its the easiest solution but that was. hard. to listen to. so now canonically thats the first time in the whole adventure that my tav felt actually sick abt something he did. i havent had a long rest since but ive decided that hes gonna have a convo w/ the companions like "i dont regret what i did, it got us what we needed without a fight, but i think that driders screams are going to haunt me for a long time." (but astarion and shadowheart approved so my boys gonna get some ~reassurance~ lmao)

and like. ive made it to the town whose name im forgetting and come across the toll collector and made her kill herself too and felt normal afterwards so its not that i made him basically kill himself, its specifically the sound of his screams that got me

also when i realized they showed back up as shadow cursed creatures right outside the toll house i reloaded again and went up onto the roof and just had astarion shoot them all from a distance. didnt even enter initiative w/ them AND it got us all to lv. 7. ty astarion, my hero *mwah*

and finally (and i did talk abt this on twitter but still) we found arabella at the gates to the graveyard. this fuckin kid. the first thing she does when we approach her is show off some INCANTATIONLESS MAGIC which immediately impresses the FUCK outta my sorcerer ass, tells me her parents are missing (and like. they were dead. i already knew they were gonna be dead. finding the bodies just confirmed it), THEN arabella tells me the only ppl she trusts are herself, her parents, and me, and tops this all off by calling me "hero-man" and running off to my camp like. congrats on the new big brother kiddo youve got him wrapped around your finger already. were both mephistopheles tieflings (presumably. she is also blue skinned), were both magic, like cmon. thats my tavs kid sister

and speaking of finding her parents bodies, actually, the whole conversation w/ the nurse "tending" to them is just...profoundly sad. i ended up choosing the deception choice and saying like "oh i see now, theyre deeply asleep" and the nurse says like "i knew these hands wouldnt fail me" like oh...sweetie...no...

(that didnt quite hit me like kar'niss' screaming did, it just left me feeling sad. for her, for the whole situation. i havent gone back to camp to tell arabella yet, im still 'splorin)

also i found the true love rings. ofc i put one on astarion and the other on my tav. i havent even got to the true confession yet lmao. you dont even know how excited i am for that. god i such a fuckin simp

OH SHIT ONE LAST THOUGHT: I GOT TO FUCKING HUG KARLACH!!!!!!!! LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

you have NO IDEA how happy i was when she got the upgrade and one of the options was "pull her into a hug" i was sat there SCREAMING in joy for a solid 30 seconds before actually doing it, and then a further 2 minutes after LMAO

i just wish there was an option to pull dammon in on the hug. man deserves it. we love this dude
