were beleg and turin gay lovers
There's an infinite number of plausible interpretations what's more important is which interpretations are the best supported and most likely. Even taking death of the author into account because let's be real Tolkien was hardcore Catholic and there's no way he intended for gay male lovers, the interpretation of Túrin and Beleg as lovers while plausible struggles to compete with non romantic interpretations.
You mentioned how current culture can color interpretation as with Achilles and Patroclus and it's notable how highly their relationship is debated. Thus many scholars here in the anglosphere have dismissed the potential for a homosexual/romantic relationship between the two while more recently I've been seeing a lot of attention to them as gay icons. Both interpretations try to shove them within the labels and boundaries of current society when they should be viewed within the context of their historical cultural norms. The Legendarium however is fictional which complicates such an analysis as culture must be inferred from the text.
For example have you considered how kisses on the mouth have been considered non-romantic and non-sexual within certain cultures? Take for example the Socialist Fraternal Kiss where among communist cultures (especially soviet cultures) where kisses on the mouth between usually men were seen as a sign of comradery. Another example is the established tradition in Christianity of mouth to mouth kisses between men (kiss of peace, etc.). In general the whole non romantic kissing is a deeply embedded European tradition like did you see all the French people complaining during Covid? Now was there possibly some latent homosexuality whose only socially sanctioned form of expression was this? Yeah maybe, but the point is that as a deeply Christian and European epic influenced work mouth to mouth kisses between men is not indicative of the flavor of their relationship, only its depth.
Then there's the question of why it is so important to distinguish the romantic from the platonic. This is often seen in discussions about Frodo and Sam, does it not matter only that the love each other not what label we put on them? Related to this, one of the many toxic pressure of the modern western patriarchy that it pressures men to only having affectionate relationships with female romantic partners. From a modern perspective Tolkien's works have many problems (including the noticable lack of female characters) but men having friends and comrades and other positive loving relationship with other men is like the least bad part of the Legendarium.
Anyways: Beleg and Túrin: Death of the Author, maybe romantic maybe not but either way there's a lot of evidence for their love and the emotional depth of their relationship.
I'd be careful too about arguing relationships are romantic and not friendships. The assumption that romantic relationships are the deepest and most intense relationships a person can have is 1 unhealthy, and 2 it is one of the bases on which bigots invalidate people on the aromantic and asexual spectrum.
