Black Eagles

Hubert:

Hubert would start off apprehensive and distant from you, and you don’t realise he cares until you notice him everywhere. You’re sat in the library and he’s sat a desk away, his eyes fixating on you as you try and do your research.

The next thing you notice is how differently people respond to you, the baker who normally chats to you with a cheery smile simply hands you your bread without a word. He won’t even look you in the eye, and you notice there’s fresh bruising on his cheekbone.

When you finally confront Hubert, you find your words failing in your throat. He stands a little too close to you, and the way he towers over you and his gloved hands stroke your hair as you speak make your feel like a small little pet. As if you exist for his amusement and there’s no one else in the entire world.

Ferdinand:

As with most things with Ferdinand, he falls for you hard and fast. From the first date he announces you as his betrothed, and he’s such an excited puppy about the affair you don’t have the heart to tell him he’s coming on far too strong. He doesn’t let go of you for the entire meal, he pulls you as close as he can and he’s enraptured, hanging on your every word.

When Ferdinand catches you speaking with someone else he becomes quite and despondent. He remains by your side, you’re both still joined at the hip to a smothering extent but he won’t say a word. He just scowls grips onto your arm a little too hard. He pulls you away from anyone who tries to speak to you, in the dining hall he insists you sit by yourselves and he cuts up your food for you.

Ferdinand didn’t ask if you wished to sleep in his quarters at Garreg Mach, you simply discovered your key to your room no longer worked and Ferdinand informed you he had your belongings moved. He picked which clothes were worth keeping and which ones needed throwing away, the room is still predominantly his. It doesn’t feel like yours, nothing feels like yours anymore. You’re becoming his.

Linhardt:

At first Linhardt seems perfectly normal, he sits with you in the library and in the dining hall. Sure, he rolls his eyes if anyone else speaks to you, and his questions are a little intrusive… but nothing that suggests anything other than a slight socially awkward nature.

It starts small, you notice you begin to get anxious when you go a few hours without seeing Linhardt. You almost can feel if he is approaching, the further away he is the more terrified you become and a sharp pain begins in your temple. When you speak to other people it feels wrong, as if you’ve told a lie or stolen someone’s possessions. The only time you feel comfortable is when you’re with Linhardt, then your body is drained of anxiety and filled with joy. It’s like you’re addicted.

Linhardt takes a long time to admit what he’s done, he watches you spiral and get more and more anxious about your bizarre symptoms. It’s only when you slam him against the wall and desperately shake him asking what he did to you does he admit the experiments. He tells you how he developed a magical device which he injected into your shoulder, one that manipulates your brainwaves to result in your body being addicted and dependent on him.

Caspar:

Caspar hasn’t even had a first date with you when it starts. It begins with the subtlety of a war axe to the face, a handsome young man approached you at the market and before he’s finished his question Caspar appears beside you. You didn’t even notice he was at the market with you, you wonder if he was following you but dismiss that thought. Caspar demands to speak to the man in your behalf, standing in front of you and shoving the stranger to force him to keep his distance. When you confront him afterwards, Caspar insists he simply noticed he shared the same description as a con artist who’d been hanging around the market place. You want to believe him.

As Caspar gets closer to you, his behaviour gets more erratic. He not only seems to always appear when a stranger wishes to speak to you to defend you from them, it starts to happen with everyone. The shopkeepers you speak too regularly, your classmates, and the servants of church, they are all extremely wary of you. They all become wary of you, sometimes you witness Caspar threatening and attacking them, he does it before your eyes. It’s as if it isn’t just about the others any more, it’s a threat to you and what will happen if you leave him.

The collar is an addition that shocked you, but perhaps given Caspar’s behaviour it shouldn’t have been a surprise. When you awoke and you began getting dressed he stood by you as always, and instead of asking for your permission as you buttoned up your shirt he slips a thick leather collar around your neck and fastens the buckle. Before you can object there is a click, something small, cold, and metal lands against your neck. A padlock. You pull at it, you try to create a little bit of room for your throat but the collar has no give. You scream at him to take it off, he refuses. He simply grabs your hair and tells you you’re his.

Blue Lions

Dimitri:

Dimitri worries about you, constantly. You notice that the Professor isn’t taking you on missions anymore, there’s no more fighting bandits and monsters, simply staying in the monastery all day frustrated and bored. When you complain about it to Dimitri one day he goes quiet, he acts as if he barely heard you and avoids your gaze. When you push him all he says is “at least you’re safe this way.” You try to argue saying you can protect yourself, but when Dimitri replies with a simple “so could my father.” And you don’t know how you can possibly respond to that.

You try to go to the Professor to explain how much you want to be taken on missions, how your restless and bored. Especially since the guards of Garreg Mach seemed to get stricter about what times you can leave the monastery and what times you have to be back by. The Professor doesn’t give you a straight answer, he says it’s nothing personal and that he will take a look at the roster to ensure you’re included soon. Soon never comes.

One day, when you’re trying to enter the training grounds to spar everyone avoids your gaze. The training master tells you that they aren’t offering training to you anymore. That is the final straw, you confront Dimitri directly. You’re prepared for him to bring up his dead father as an excuse as you look him directly into his sapphire eyes. You say he needs to loosen his grip on you, that you need to be able to leave the monastery and train. Dimitri argues a recruit broke his collarbone training and he couldn’t live with himself if the same happened to you. When you argue, when you threaten to leave him something evil appears in his eyes. He grips your hand too tightly and pulls you impossibly close. You know in that moment you’ll never leave.

Dedue:

Dedue is more affectionate a partner than you expected. He shoves his love through acts of service, when you wake up you’re greeted with a beautifully made breakfast brought to your bedroom. Occasionally with a plant or flower from the greenhouse. There’s nothing wrong with that exactly, you can’t explain it. They are lovely gestures, you feel adored. But it’s so much. You can’t wake up without Dedue being there, he is constantly at your side and desperate for your attention.

Soon, Dedue is making all of your meals. His cooking is delicious, that’s not the issue. The issue is he treats food made by anyone else as if it’s poisoned. One day when you went to the bakery he was horrifically insulted that you would buy food instead of asking him to make you some. To everyone else he just seems caring and sweet, all you can do is stay whilst you feel Dedue’s breath down your neck.

One day, you wake up and the door to your quarters is locked. You also notice that Dedue seemed to have moved his things in in the night. Dedue appears with your breakfast and the key is hanging around his neck. You fold your arms and refuse to eat, scowling as your eyes fixated on the golden key on a silver chain. Dedue strokes your hair, telling you to eat with a tone one would usually reserve for an animal. It was a mistake to throw the plate of food against the wall, it was immature and the actions of a petulant child. It felt good, but when you turn to Dedue a dark anger has filled his face. He grabs your throat and hair, he tells you how all he wants to do is take care of you as his rage grows.

Felix:

It starts off small, when you are with your friends you can see Felix pouting and turning away with folded arms. Occasionally he stays with you whilst you speak to those you’re with, usually he sits a table or so away, and throws looks at you. You try to ignore him, knowing he has no say in who you associate with. There is however a twist of guilt in your chest, when you try to confront him he refuses to discuss it. He makes a sarcastic, irritated comment in response, as if he’s punishing you. You try asking Dimitri or Sylvain for help, all they do is shrug and say Felix must really like you. You don’t have a choice but to simply deal with it.

It would be easier to deal with it Felix actually seemed to enjoy having you around. He makes scathing, awful comments to your friends making them not want to come near you anymore if he’s present. And these days he’s always present. However, when you try to bond with him he scowled and speaks in a tone laden with sarcasm. It’s almost impossible to tell if he likes you or if he’s punishing you. Every now and then he reaches for your hand, his fingers are thin and cold around yours, and he kissed you on the forehead. The slight glimpse of affection almost makes it all worth it.

Felix is quite blunt when he tells you, he begins simply saying why you can and can’t associate with. The baker, the shopkeepers, the grocer, most of the students at Garreg Mach, and far more are all on this list. When it comes to who you can associate with, you can only speak to them with Felix present. He grabs ahold of your wrist tightly until bruising appears under his thin hand and on your arm. It doesn’t push him to let go, he simply pulls you around after him like a ragdoll.

Sylvain:

At first you assume your little tryst with Sylvain is a one time thing like with all of his other conquests. However, it soon becomes clear that Sylvain wishes for more. He appears in your bed first thing in the morning, whether you remember him getting there or not. He is always asleep or watching you, and given how aloof he is in every other circumstance you try not to give it too much thought. He does keep sitting far too close to you in classes though. However, his false cheerful demeanour wavers whenever you try to pull away from him, a scowl grows and his tone darkens. It’s terrifying, and all you can tell yourself is that at least it’s only happening once or twice. It’s not a problem, right?

It becomes clear that Sylvain’s rules don’t apply to him. If you so much as look at someone else, Sylvain is furious - but he is still hooking up with a new woman every night. It angers you, Sylvain does nothing but grip you too tightly and insult you if you look at someone else for too long. When you try to explain how you feel, Sylvain dismisses you and tells you you’re being bitter and twisted. He says that you’re holding too tight a grip on him, and that you need to give him space. You give a humourless laugh and mention that you might spend some time with Dimitri tonight. You don’t make that mistake again; the bruises on your neck take weeks to heal.

When Sylvain is the one who gives his brother the killing blow be becomes far more clingy, and at first it’s fine. It’s better than before when he was dating women right in front of your eyes. At least now when he’s being overbearing you know you’re the only one in his mind. He speaks about what his brother did to him in brutal detail, it’s overwhelming and you want him to stop. But if his attention is purely on you, maybe it’s okay. Maybe you can save him.

Ashe:

Ashe doesn’t have much experience with relationships, his perception is what he’d read in books and that’s precisely what he wants. He wishes for a fairytale where he saves you, he wants you to be completely his with your focus on no one else, and he’s determined to make his dream come true. When he first lays eyes on you, he knows you’re the one who he must bow to. He wishes to be your knight, and that’s how he approaches you. It’s sweet, really. His green eyes are so wide and excited, and you do enjoy his company.

It begins to get strange when you’ve been with Ashe a few weeks, he starts to take on your responsibilities at the monastery, your turn on cooking duty, your turn for the greenhouse, and more. It’s … fine, you suppose. It’s a little condescending but you know Ashe means well. However, when he insists you can’t possibly handle the task when the Professor asks for help moving some heavy boxes, that’s when it goes too far. You tell Ashe as much but he looks at you with wide green eyes and says he just wants to help, you relent, and he looks like an excited puppy. You tell yourself it’s cute, and you try to believe it.

It gets worse day by day, until the tasks Ashe doesn’t think you can do become things like dressing yourself, cutting up your own food, and showering. You try to argue, but it’s been so long you start to almost forget small things. You want to cook, but when Ashe asks you how long something needs to boil you don’t remember. He looks at you smugly as if this proves his point, and when he tries to show you can’t carry heavy boxes you realise your muscles are tense and weak from months of not moving. He’s broken you.

Dedue makes their favorite meal every day and will cut the veggies into cute little animals/flowers. Dedue has a big crush on you, however, he’s so shy about it and probably will neither talk to you nor avoid you. Until his kid(s) ‘bully’ him into talking to you. It will take a lot of time for him to ever ask you out, but the first date would be one where Dedue invites you to his house so he can cook food for you

༓Hubert von Vestra Hubert is that single dad who intimidates other people and doesn’t talk to almost anyone besides his child(ren) or you. He is a little stern when it comes to his kid(s) grades but there is always a reward for finishing it or getting good results on the report card. Hubert is a quiet man so he doesn’t talk much, but you can tell how much he loves his kid(s) by his actions. Perhaps it’s because he doesn’t talk much but Hubert enjoys messing with you which ends up with some weird sexual tension between you both. If Hubert doesn’t feel like messing with you, the conventions with him can be quite pleasant. To be honest you might not even realize he likes you before you’re asked out. If you accept the date, it’s going to be a traditional one; movies, dinner, etc.

༓Claude von Riegan Claude is that single dad who is popular and loved by everyone and was most likely a star student back in his school years. He is supportive of all of his kid(s) decisions and will give good advice. But is not above teasing them, and his kid(s) might view him as the embarrassing parent because he will find enjoyment in blasting loud music to annoy his kid(s). You aren’t safe either, another victim of his teasing and playfulness. Claude is shamelessly flirtatious to you, and a little dramatic with it as well (jokingly blowing a kiss at you and winking). The relationship between you guys is odd for adults, acting more like goofy teenagers. Claude doesn’t hide that he’s crushing on you and probably already asked you out. The date is going to be another traditional one; movies, dinner. But the two of you guys will be out late in the night, and by the time he is dropping you back at home, both of you are giggling.

༓Jerzita  Jerzita is that single dad who doesn’t socialize with anyone but his kid(s) and possibly you if feeling courageous and not too shy. Jerzita is super sweet to his child(ren), always complimenting them and saying ‘I love you’ to them, and rewarding them. He wants to spoil them with the world, and would if he could. There is no way you can’t tell Jerzita likes you with how often he’ll crack a small smile and blush around you while to everyone else he’s closed off. He is unsure of what to do and is far too shy to do anything in person so usually Jerzita will ask his child(ren) to give the gift of flowers to you instead. It’s both sweet and funny, mainly because of how annoying his kid(s) are becoming because of their dad’s shyness. If Jerzita can find the strength and courage to do it, he will ask you out on a date. If you accept, it’s going to be a short and simple one where the two of you go out on an ice cream date.

Listen I love Suave Possibly-a-Vampire Assassin Hubert as much as the next person, but we as a fandom must never forget that pre-time skip Hubert is a huge fucking nerd-ass loser. Pre-time skip Hubert radiates so much “edgy poorly socialized homeschooled kid” energy that it is blinding. It is so painfully obvious that he’s had 1.5 friends his entire life and all of them have been younger than him. 

This gangly, grungy-haired goth dude who is awkwardly too old for his peers and thinks laughing ominously all the time will make people take him seriously. “What if the archbishop just straight-up died wouldn’t that be shocking lmao just kidding did I scare you?” He loves board games, but he gets freaked out if anybody else realizes that he loves board games. He secretly wants to be a pegasus knight but he’s afraid of heights. He’s such an awkward nerd. 

While Ferdinand was out there with Constance being crowned king and queen of Nobility Prom, Hubert was practicing his sinister laugh in the mirror alone in his room. 

There is a reason he gets along so well with Bernadetta. In the high school AU I will never write, they would be the only two members of their anime club. They’d research poisonous plants together and she’d draw him pictures of his dark pegasus rider OC that he’d keep in a secret binder and never show anyone else. 

Hubert thinks threatening a teacher who is also a famous mercenary is not only a smart tactic, but one that could work. Hubert is so proud of the fact that he’s scheming against the church that he’s practically walking around with a sign that says I Have Many Dark Secrets and he desperately hopes somebody will ask him about them.

What an absolute loser. I love him.

I don't think you understand how long I have been mulling over this.

For literal months I have been turning over this question of why I love Liv and despise Lin despite the fact that they are ultimately very similar when you actually break them down:

Obvious passion for scientific pursuits (Linhardt and his Crest studies, Olivia and her alternate dimension research/'her' supercollider)

Questionable people skills (Linhardt prying into Marianne and Lysithea's business to find out more about the Crests they're trying to keep private, Olivia manhandling Peter B to examine him and get samples without asking him if she can)

Equally questionable ethics where said pursuits are concerned (Linhardt infiltrates the Holy Tomb without permission to take relics for examination, Olivia has no qualms about murdering Spiderpeople to see the supercollider work)

Limited empathy for others (Linhardt calls Lysithea rude because she won't let him use her in his Crest research, Olivia shows no concern for the people from other dimensions even though she knows their cells are degenerating painfully)

Prefer the pursuit of knowledge, but are adept in combat (Linhardt has a boon in Reason and an impressive list of spells including Bolganone and Excalibur, Olivia has the octosuit and gives the Spidercrew a run for their money)

On paper they hit a lot of the same beats, and because I love all these aspects of Liv theoretically I should be a huge fan of Lin, right? And yet he's on my least favorite character list. What is the disconnect there?

I think it really does come down to how the media portrays them. Liv is a villain through and through, clearly a mad scientist who loves her job, and she's just fun to watch on the screen because she's having so much fun being bad. Lin, meanwhile, is presented as a protagonist and someone we're supposed to see as a good person, painting a lot of those above traits as...what, excusable? Social awkwardness and ineptitude that we're supposed to find endearing even though he's clearly violating other peoples' autonomy? He's framed as someone we should like and consider a good person, even though parts of his trait list would be at home on an out-and-out villain.

If they had gone ahead and done him as a villain instead of trying to force us to see him as a good person with "quirks," I really do wonder if I'd have liked him more. He can be morally reprehensible and still super fun and engaging -- after all, Liv sure was! He could have been done as Edelgard's scientific advisor: whereas Hubert is her right hand and the guy who gets his hands dirty on her behalf, Linhardt is the one who does the research and provides the tools that make the Empire's progress possible (not to mention Hubert's covert affairs). It would have given him a chance to show more of his passion instead of his constant boredom at being forced into classes or a conflict that he clearly had no interest in, so he wouldn't come across as so whiny or lazy: he hyperfocuses on what he likes, instead, and it could have opened up opportunities for supports where he puts things off because he's engaged in something and has to be dragged away from it; that, I think, would have given us a much better view of the dichotomy of how he is when he's invested in something vs how he is when he's being forced into something. He doesn't even need to be redeemable! He can just be a bad guy, but if he enjoys himself and his work enough I might even be sad to see him fall because it means no more opportunities to see him getting engrossed in his passions.

This is just a theory, though. IntSys didn't bother to explore that option for his character, so all I can do is speculate.

But I have been well. With the support of our allies, progress with the war has been both swift and decisive.

Although I suppose that doesn't quite answer your question. Dorothea and Petra have brought it to my attention that I rarely respond accordingly when questions involve me directly, so. I have been collaborating with Linhardt on his more engaging studies, and Bernadetta has been joining Ferdinand and I for tea as of late. Byleth has gladly roped me into their training sessions with Caspar, claiming that we will be good influences on one another. Begrudgingly, they were not incorrect on that front. Naturally, this has been encouraged by Her Majesty as we both pursue greater independence and free time outside of our duties.

Likewise, it would be excellent news to know that you are doing well. May only the best cross your path.

Do you have any Billiam headcanons?

Yes, absolutely!

- Okay so basics first: he/him, Piglin hybrid, 5'7", demiromantic asexual, undiagnosed ADHD, and FTM trans. He's somewhere in his mid to late thirties by the time of The Masquerade, and at that point he'd been with the Egg for about twenty years or so, give or take.

- He added the titles "Sir" and "Third" to his name to make himself seem more established. And because he did come from money, he knows how to play the part.

- He doesn't actually mistreat Butler, and Butler's name is Moon. It's an act they put on, another layer of protection for them. In actuality, they're basically parent and child. Moon is his accomplice, his protege, and his heir.

- He has long pink hair that he is very protective over, with Hubert and Moon being the only other people he lets touch it. He has red eyes, and wears reading glasses. And yes he does have the pointy ears and they do move. He also has quite a lot of gold jewelry.

- He and Hubert were very close, and as for how they met, well- they quite literally ran into each other in a dark alleyway. They were very different people running away from very different lives, and ended up sticking together from then on. Two teenage runaways against the rest of the world, Billy and Hubert.

- Billiam never knew his parents, but he does know that his father was also a Piglin hybrid, and he had an uncle on that side. He also knows that his parents loved each other- his mother's old diaries really helped him know a lot of things.

- Billiam did not intend to kidnap Moon when he robbed the bank, and Bill meant to return the kid once things calmed down. Until then, this child would serve as his little accomplice in the rest of his crimes, with the promise that they'd be returned home afterwards with a share of the money. Yeah, that didn't work out because the kid almost died. Anyways-

- Another thing: There may or may not have been other people involved in the robbery incident, but Crops mysteriously escaped and for some reason Sherman failed to recapture him in time and uh... well, let's just say Billiam was the only survivor, and that was mostly because he had grabbed Moon in the chaos (and also because he looked and smelled a bit too much like Sherman for Crops's comfort.)

- Billiam knows how to play the piano, of course, and how to dance, and made sure that both of his butlers know these things as well!

-He also made sure they were both well educated when it came to potions and poisons and how to make them, handle them, how to properly clean the bottles and stands afterward- and basically infodumped everything he knew about that subject in one sitting, all while showing them how to do it. Hubert already knew this, he was just dragged into it to make Moon feel less nervous.

- He's really good with a crossbow, and was also very alarmed to learn that Crops had given Little Orphan Moon pointers on how to shoot people. By showing him how to do it. It was at this moment Bill started thinking he made a horrible mistake stealing this kid.

- He will happily ramble about whatever he's currently fixated on for a very long time unless stops him. Especially if he is doing something while talking, or if he's nervous. He also has a tendency to overtalk when nervous, especially in awkward social situations or if he's trying to divert attention away from a certain part of the room-

- He has a really good sense of smell, as well as excellent hearing.

- He does, indeed, like potatoes. A lot.

- Everyone knows that he has a tendency to lowkey keep an eye on any nearby child, and will discretely keep track of the kids, especially if they are small children. At this point, everyone is fairly certain it's some kind of Piglin thing.

- He feels a strange sense of kinship with zombified Piglins. After all, he's also not accepted by his kind because of something out of his control...

- This man has so many books I'm not kidding- this man reads a lot, and has so many different kinds of books on all kinds of subjects.

- Billiam and Sherman are related but don't know it, not yet anyway. However- something about Billiam reminded Sherman of someone he had lost...

Hubert

Name: Ada (a way to honour Edelgard)

Class: Dark Mage / Dark Bishop

She has waist length black hair that’s mostly straight but ends in waves, pale green eyes with black rings underneath them from insomnia, and a soft, heart shaped face. She is extremely smiley and giggly, with a morbid sense of humour. This is often disconcerting to people. She’s a practical joker as well as fiendishly intelligent academically, but often struggles with her work ethic and physical activities such as running, horse riding, etc.

She has a sometimes difficult relationship with her father, he wishes for her to he as devoted to Edelgard’s children as he was to her but does not want to repeat his father’s mistakes… However he does not realise Ada wishes to find her own way and make her own decisions due to an independent streak. Ada plays many practical jokes on Hubert, or attempts to, and to everyone’s surprise Hubert does eventually retaliate and get into the spirit of things.

Ferdinand

Name: Oskar

Class: Thief / Assassin

He has blue eyes that clash greatly with his light ginger hair, and an olive skins tone. He’s tall and lanky, preferring to keep his hair short. He spent most of his childhood desperate to be a noble knight like his father but he was always too awkward, clumsy, and physically weak to do so. As a teenager he discovered his talents were in stealing, lockpicking, and swordplay. He’d often mischievously break into his parents’ room, take one or two random items and hide them somewhere else in the estate. He fancies himself as a Robin Hood type, stealing from criminals and the corrupt nobles and giving to the poor… this often doesn’t go as he intends however. He’s quite shy and socially awkward, he does try to make friends but it often doesn’t go very well. To Ferdinand’s horror, he detests tea and hot drinks.

He generally has a good relationship with Ferdinand but he constantly fears he’s a disappointment to his parents. Ferdinand is constantly scolding him for stealing and attempting to force him to be interested in politics to no avail. They do however bond over reading fiction and sparring.

Linhardt

Name: Freya

Class: Valkyrie

She has long green hair that she wears in a plait, pale skin, and dark blue eyes. She’s loud and boisterous, often preferring running around outside to reading inside. She has a lazy streak reminiscent of her father, but usually when it comes to things such as her being on kitchen duty and academic studies. She does however sleep quite late in the morning and go to bed in the early hours, similar to her father. She adores magic but hates the boring studying that is required, she is an extremely talented flyer, preferring that over anything else. She has a great love of animals meaning she has bonded quite strongly with her Pegasus. She does also love other creatures and is often trying to convince her parents to take in new pets or sneak them in under their nose. At last count she had two Pegasus, three horses, six cats, five dogs, and a trained falcon.

She generally has a very good relationship with her father despite him trying to find her tasks to distract her for long enough so he can nap and she won’t try to push him to do strenuous activities with her like hiking, Pegasus riding, sparring, and the like. She is often showing him new animals she’s found and he will find books on them so she can find out about them at length. Often she reads them after nudging and he tells her some interesting facts. This is the only time he can get her to read but they do bond over learning about animals, and also monsters.

Caspar

Name: Eike

Class: Wyvern Rider / Wyvern Lord

In appearance they are fairly similar to Caspar but with black hair, they are significantly more skittish than him though and a few inches taller. They do not enjoy fighting very much, and do everything they can to avoid Caspar intense training regime whilst Caspar is nonplussed as to why. They are very artistic, often painting and giving their creations to their loved ones. They prefer to stay out of military endeavours which their grandfather constantly disparages. Caspar doesn’t understand it but generally supports Eike’s decisions to avoid combat. One thing that does convince Eike to be involved however is being given a pet Wyvern that they adore. Their Wyvern is beyond spoiled, given the finest meats, and Eike spends more time with them than anyone else.

Generally their relationship with Caspar is good, they enjoy meal times with each other and have the same immense appetite. Caspar hangs every painting that Eike gives him on the walls of the estate and proudly shows any visitor they have. The only time they argue with each other is when Caspar pushes Eike into training or any military action. That is the only time soft spoken Eike shows any fury at all.

Neven and Marcus are packing the last of Neven's things into a rental car--a bright yellow pick-up.

MARCUS Are you sure you don't want me to drive you back? I can take the train home.

NEVEN Nah, I need to practice driving.

MARCUS (surprised) You do?

NEVEN Jerry called again.

MARCUS (in a fake, menacing tone) Fucking Jerry--!

NEVEN (in a similar tone) That fucking guy--! (Neven seamlessly switches back to his normal tone.) He's still dogging me for that coordinator job at the Y downtown. We're out in the suburbs so you know...faster to drive in if I take the freeway. Because I love hurtling down the Autobaan in a four-ton death machine.

Marcus looks at him, gobsmacked, before bursting out laughing. Neven is mildly peeved.

NEVEN Hey, guy. Shut up. We were going to get a car for chauffeuring around Short Stuff, anyway.

Marcus's giggles subside, and he continues to stow boxes into the rental pickup. The mail carrier says hello to them both and passes Neven a single piece of mail.

NEVEN (reading the return address) The City of Newcrest? Looks official.

MARCUS Hubert's been amusing himself by sending me every piece of junk mail the City produces. Just toss it when you go inside.

Nev jogs into the house, then returns to haul more boxes.

NEVEN Has Hubes been your only social outlet, or have you talked to any other humanoids lately?

MARCUS Beau wants me to look at a house with him in a few days. You'll love this--it's a Betsy Marker property.

NEVEN Ugh, that woman. She wanted to give us a huge discount once she found out I was the fruit of Nadia's loins. I refused point blank. So tacky.

Marcus raises an eyebrow at him, considering the outfit he's wearing. Neven replies with a wry smile.

NEVEN Well, anyway, Nadia doesn't like her, either. Hates her commercials.

NEVEN & MARCUS (singing off-tune, making cheesy gestures) "With Betsyyy, everything turns to sooooold!"

MARCUS I hate how catchy that is.

NEVEN It's the devil's jingle. You'll have to come see the factory soon.

MARCUS I'd think you'd be done living in squalor by now.

NEVEN Nah, it's been renovated into yuppie cubbies, like art studios and little froyo shops and shit. It's nothing like here.

A pause settles in awkwardly. They continue to pack the pick-up.

NEVEN I'm counting on you to keep up with your uncle duties.

MARCUS What does an uncle do, anyway?

NEVEN You know...being awkward at parties; telling the kid to pull your finger; growing a mustache, stuff like that. You'll be a natural. Except for growing facial hair, RIP.

Neven scrubs his own immaculate scruff, and Marcus huffs a dry laugh. Then another pause catches up with them.

NEVEN ...You're gonna visit, right?

Marcus’s expression falters.

MARCUS If you have to ask, then I haven't been much of a friend to you.

NEVEN I know kids aren't your scene, is all.

MARCUS I'll be there. I'm out that way to see Alan, anyway.

NEVEN (stiffly) Right. Alan.

MARCUS Nev, I'll be there.

Neven puts the last box into the pick-up and closes the gate. He exhales a heavy breath.

NEVEN It's weird that we're going our separate ways, but in the same general direction. It's like when you back out of a parking spot at the same time as the guy next to you. You're expecting just your car to move, but then like it feels like the whole world's shifting. You know...?

Marcus blinks at him.

MARCUS You need to work on your car metaphors.

NEVEN (smiling) Fuck you, that was a car simile not a metaphor.

They hug.

MARCUS Text me when you get there. Don't--don't keep your foot on the brake the whole time, please.

NEVEN I love you, too.

Neven gets into the driver’s seat of the truck and meticulously puts on his seat belt and checks his mirrors. He puts on the headlights for good measure. Marcus touches his forehead nervously as he watches the pick-up drive away.

right so you asked me yesterday (i think? time is a social construct), and now i want to ask you! what's your favourite voice acting/voice actor from 3h?

i'm pretty sure that was yesterday too, but i'm definitely the wrong person to ask about when exactly something happened lolll

anyway, thanks for asking!!! my ultimate favorite performance from three houses is chris hackney as dimitri. i just... can't get over it, not even as i'm replaying blue lions for the sixth time now (oof). you can tell he put his whole heart into that role, and i'm so grateful for the amazing character he helped shape dimitri into. overall, it's such a believable and honest portrayal of a very complicated person, and dimitri's sincerity, kindness, and strength really shine through (even in the midst of sometimes awkward writing). dimitri seems like a very difficult character to "get right"-- but i'm happy to say that chris hackney did exactly that. :)

(random side note: i can't believe how funny chris hackney is in real life, especially when compared to how painful it is when dimitri attempts to make people laugh in the game. like, huh??)

other honorable mentions/faves:
