I was reading about a model with down syndrome who works for Victoria's Secret. People keep saying that she's being exploited for wokeness because they were once accused of being sexist and patriarchal. What do you think of it? I heard about that. I don't know much about her specific situation, but modeling can be a pretty sexist industry overall. I'd say as long as she's being paid fairly and she's able to choose/consent to everything the job entails, then it's great. If she's happy, it goes a long to challenge society's misconceptions of what disabled people can/should do with their bodies. It wasn't so long ago we still had institutionalization and the "ugly" laws and all.

Have you heard of Sofia Jirau? She's a Victoria's Secret model with down syndrome and people think the company is taking advantage of her because they haven't been doing well with their brand.

Is it’s simply because she has Down syndrome? Because then people are just infantilising her. Unless there’s actual proof that they’re taking advantage of her, people are just upset that someone liked her has a job. People with mental disabilities can have jobs and think for themselves. Just because she works for a bigger company doesn’t mean she doesn’t understand her job. That’s a bit insulting if that’s the only reason people think that.

Through fashion disability’s are constantly being recognised and celebrated, which is so important in today society. The rise of models with disabilities has revolutionised the fashion industry, Jillian Mercado, Mama Cax and Alexandra Kutas among others broke the barriers for their community providing visibility and creating more opportunities for aspiring disabled models.

A famous fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger shown light onto models with disability’s and created an ‘adaptive collection’ this line is incredible as it shows that everyone should be treated the same regardless of their disability. The collection gives those with a disability the same clothing regardless of their disability.

Sofía Jirau has made history as first Victoria secret model with Down syndrome “one day I dreamed it, I worked for it and today it’s a dream come true” she made her debut as a model in march 2019 on her 23rd birthday and in February 2020 she modelled at New York Fashion week for the first time.

We all know Victorias Secret for its super thin and beautiful models in skimpy underwear sets walking down a catwalk with huge wings. But we also know how much they used to promote anorexia etc. After years of criticism and being called out for their toxic behaviour, the brand finally made the decision to overhaul their brands image. For the first time in Victorias Secrets' history they began promoting body positivity which included women of all different sizes and structures. However, was this truly inclusive or just a PR stunt?

In 2021 the brand announced it was recreating a new group of women as its representatives. The brand introduced its first black transgender model (Emire D'Spain) and also its first model with down syndrome (Sofia Jirau). However this left many people wondering was this a genuine shift to body positivity, or were they just trying to shake off the criticism. Victorias Secret was known to make its models starve themselves to maintain a small waist.

Ali Tate Cutler was Victorias Secret first 'plus-sized' model. Before Cutler the brand did not hire anyone above a size 12, Tate is a size 14 which they class as plus-sized. I think this is so wrong Cutler has never seen plus-sized. This was the brands way of redeeming itself and trying to claim that they were inclusive and did not promote anorexia. The brand faced even more backlash after they announced Cutler as their plus sized model as many people also said that she was not plus-sized. Therefore, I believe that the whole inclusivity and body positivity movement by Victorias Secret was just a big PR stunt to get them out of all of the backlash the were receiving before, apart from it massively backfired. The brand today has started to post more 'plus-sized' models on places such as instagram but they do not promote it nearly half as much as they should.

In my eyes Victorias Secret is still the same toxic brand it was all those years ago. I believe they are only promoting body-positivity because they feel as though they have to, just so they don't get 'cancelled'.

DISABILITY DIVERSITY

For many people with a disability, off the rail clothing can often be inaccessible & uncomfortable. With a huge majority of garments made for those with a disability created for functionality, leaving the design element overlooked. However now thanks to things such as magnetic buttons, one handed zips and Velcro hemlines, more designers can to create clothes for those with a disability.

In 2017, Tommy Hilfiger launched their successful ‘Adaptive’ line and is the only global designer to invest heavily in adaptive fashion. The line gives those with a disability the same clothing options regardless of their disability. In 2019, other major brands such as Nike, who announced the release of its first ever hands free shoe which allows the wearer to step into the shoe without any adjustments, ASOS & UGG all created solutions for those with a disability. This positive change should hopefully encourage other brands to follow suit, allowing those with a disability to feel more accepted within the industry with the choice to express themselves through clothing.

Over the years we’re also seeing a rise in disabled models appearing in magazines and on runways. These women are challenging the fashion industry’s idealistic view & are paving the way for more inclusivity within fashion.

Jillian Mercando:

Model Jillian Mercando is a model with a physical disability and has to use a wheelchair after being diagnosed with a muscular dystrophy. She is an activist for representing queer disabled people in the fashion industry. Her first campaign was for Diesel in 2014 and since then she has appeared on the cover of vouge and has featured on runways at New York Fashion Week.

Mama Cax:

Mama Cax was a model and advocate for inclusivity in fashion, she used a prostetic leg after her own was amputated when she was 15. She made her breakthrough at Chromat’s Spring 2019 show and since then has modelled for Vouge, Tommy Hilfiger and has walked the catwalk at New York Fashion Week. She also made an appearance at Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty show. The model tragically passed in 2019 but she still remains a key figure in celebrating diversity in fashion.

Una scelta che stravolge i canoni, include, rompe tabù e rovescia stereotipi.
