Episode 3 ~ Breaking The Mold

I’m pulled away from what was turning out to be a beautiful stitch by a call from my sister. She’s having quite the adventures in San My, it sounds like, and the hustle and bustle of the city fits right in with her always busy and always working mentality. I think she gets that from mama. 

More excitingly, however, she’s attached herself to a client. A man named Santino Luque and a man she’s quick to tell me is very handsome but (and there is always a but with any man) he’s already claimed by a model. 

“Sounds like one of those high maintenance men,” I remark, hoping she gets the tone in my voice that suggests she stays away. Sofia is beautiful herself but for me a wealthy and handsome man dating a model sounds like nothing but trouble. 

"High maintenance man? What do you mean?” She asks. 

"A guy that you have to exist for I guess. You know, a man that wants you more as an accessory for his life than anything else.” 

I can almost hear her nodding her silent agreement. "I have not formally met this model he's seeing but I've seen her pictures. I was thinking she’s the high-maintenance once.”

"They likely both are and deserve each other!"

The coins in John Wick are a monetized form of favors.

As Berrada says in John Wick 3, the word 'assassin' refers to 'men who have faith.' A favor, to some degree, is a transaction of faith. Whether a favor is repaid is a matter of faith.

The coins in John Wick thus represent the trade of favors. One to one. Perform a service for someone under the table, you get coins for that service, favors which one could then cash for other services down the line.

The coins as favors could be seen through the Wick films. In John Wick 1, John has a whole case full of coins and is consequently one of the most respected people under the table. The coins represent the store of favors and is indicative of the goodwill John has with people under the table.

In John Wick 2, John loses most of his coins and has to dip into his stash. John, at this state, still has goodwill. But assassins do not hesitate to target John when the contract is put out on him. Which shows that John has lost favor to some degree.

In John Wick 3, John has been excommunicated and is devoid of favours. John has to therefore burn bridges, by using his crucifix and marker with sofia, to survive. Otherwise, John is unable to access the services available under the table once John is excommunicado. At this point, John has little to no coins left.

Furthermore, the theme of owing and being owed favors is quite prevalent in John Wick 2 and 3. It is John's debts that get him dragged into Santino's affairs, and it is debts that force him on the run from the table until John decides to go against the table.

The coins are, therefore, not monetary in value. Instead they are the way people monetize the idea of faith under the table.

I hope it's ok if I put another ask in here as well.

Sofia and Andrei are both names/titles from "The Vampire Armand".

Sofia is hinting at "Santa Sofia", which is a real saint. There is a cathedral in Kiev by that name (and Armand comes from there).

Andrei... is Armand's real name.

Now... we don't really see the headshot there for "Andrei", so I'm not sure if it might be "young Armand". And obviously it is unlikely that this "Sofia" is a saint - she might be another vampire. I don't remember another character by that name in the chronicles(?), but there are a few unnamed ones in the covens.

So. I take "Sofia" for one of the Parisian vampires... OR of the ones in Santino's, maybe. It depends on how much backstory we get, because...

I personally think the name "Andrei" might be too laden with meaning to be anything else. 🤷🏽‍♀️

OR - wild guess in regards to Sofia - do we know the name of Daniel's second wife yet?^^

The number one spot on the list goes to...

Koji Shimazu!!! Easy 5/5

He easily takes the first spot. I mean, just look at his interactions with his daughter.

Koji had a loving relationship with Akira. They ran the Osaka Continental together, and they have these little inside jokes about "the Concierge/Koji's daughter". The way they switched between Japanese and English when talking, as bilingual families do. And the moment where Koji told Akira that he looked forward to dinner with his daughter is just the sweetest.

The only mistake Koji probably made was him sacrificing his life in the duel with Caine when he could have escaped alongside Akira. He thought this was the only way to protect his daughter, but who is to say the High Table wouldn't chase after Akira regardless if he's dead or not, but admittedly there was a lot of nuance to this situation that there was no better or worse decision to make at this critical moment as a parent.

Number two on my list goes to...

Sofia!!! 4/5

I was initially divided between her or Caine for this spot, but I decided on Sofia because it is explicitly shown in JW3 that she was present in her (unnamed) daughter's life early on, and only had to separate herself from her child and keep her in hiding in order to keep her daughter safe from potential enemies, something that kept Sofia haunted for the rest of her life.

"Sometimes, you gotta kill what you love." Also, Sofia keeping photos of her and her daughter in her office makes me sad.

Alright, as you might expect, number three on the list is none other than...

Caine!!! 4/5

The reason Caine is number three is that there aren't exactly many details on the relationship between Caine and his daughter. In fact, we aren't even sure whether Mia knew of her father at all. All we know is that Caine had a picture of Mia on his pocket watch, and the most he could ever come close to seeing his daughter is hearing her play the violin on the streets from afar.

Despite there being a high possibility that Caine was totally absent in Mia's life, Caine obviously loved his daughter very much, so much so that he wanted to leave the life of an assassin because of her, and was very pained by the fact that he couldn't get close to her due to the deal he made with the Marquis.

Now, the number four place on this list goes to...

The Director. 3/5

Despite her taking Jardani in as a child and raising him in the Ruska Roma, John Wick had a strained relationship with his mother figure.

Her parenting style is very strict and cruel, even cold-hearted, but she believed it was for the best. After all, she was raising a whole lot of children under the Ruska Roma by herself to become hitmen and assassins. The Director's treatment towards her children may not be ideal, but it didn't mean she didn't care for them.

The number five and final place goes to...

Viggo Tarasov. 3/5

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that he doesn't love Iosef as much as the other parents do on this list. It's just that his biggest mistake was that he never told his son about John Wick before.

Viggo probably spoiled his son very much, and while he wasn't afraid of physically punching Iosef in the guts for making a giant stupid mistake, he never once corrected Iosef's larger personal issues like his arrogance and violent tendencies. Looking at the person Iosef turned out to be, I personally think there is a certain degree of carelessness when Viggo raised his son.

Before we end, our (un)honorable mention goes to...

The Head of the d'Antonio family, aka Gianna's and Santino's father. 2.5/5

This is all just speculation since we have zero idea what this man looked like or how he runs his family (while there's no mention of a mother, we don't know whether the big old man single-handedly raised his two children), but the fact that Santino wanted to kill his sister out of jealousy after their father died is very telling of the family environment the d'Antonios lived in.

Because they were a criminal family who was one of the members of the High Table, it's very likely that this kind of toxic behaviour between family members was encouraged. Whatever genuine love or bond between Santino and Gianna would have been squashed by their father in one way or another.

The day goes on like you might expect but it does include a call from my sister. She’s been working with that Santino character if you recall? Apparently, he’s bossy and demanding and of course hits on her. Aggressively. I thought he was dating a model? I guess for men like that it doesn’t matter. 

All I can do is warm my sister but really I should warn him. She’s the lawyer and I am sure a very good one as Sofia is the smartest person I know. I really hope she keeps in touch and that she’s okay.

I think Akira drives either a Lexus or a Mazda (stylish and has a certain amount of luxury attached to the brand).

Koji used to own a Honda in his younger days before switching to Toyota. (He sees no point in showing off his status, so he acts humble when selecting cars.)

Caine would be into Subaru or Kia if he wasn't blind. (He's always into sporty cars, and a Subaru is a nice balance of sportiness and utility. Kia is a nice alternative.)

Tracker actually drives a Subaru.

Sofia is a loyal Mitsubishi user.

John only uses either a Honda or a Chevrolet before he got interested in vintage cars. (Reliable and gets the fucking job done.)

Santino and Gianna definitely own BMWs.

Viggo bought Iosef a Ford before and Iosef obviously threw a tantrum, so he bought a Cadillac for his son and the Ford went to the Tarasov mob's use. (There are already many Ferraris and Lamborghinis in Iosef's garage.)

The Marquis de Gramont has every French car brand at his disposal (Renault, Citröen, Peugeot, Buggati, etc.)

Winston had tried a Tesla once and said "nope!" almost instantly.

If the Adjudicator is not riding on a limousine, their favourite rides are on a Mazda, a Hyundai or a Lincoln.

I havent really got a single clue on cars but idgaf anyways yeah canon definitely
