"Stop Romanticizing Tech" πŸ‘©β€πŸ’» Software Engineer's Realistic Day
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've heard a lot of peers in tech say they wish people would "stop romanticizing tech" because of their personal experience with burnout and stress and more recently, AI and layoffs. all their complaints resonated with me and for a time, i also saw each day as a painful slog.
but i think just a pinch of romanticism and optimism can go a long way towards seeing possibilities and opportunities where others may not. we're already here, after all, at this point of uncertainty and chaos. if we tell ourselves that we can't see it any other way, we only suffer twice.
so regardless of your circumstances, i hope that as you acknowledge the reality, you also see everything that could be πŸ’›

morning!! πŸŒ‡
woke up 30 minutes before my alarm!! ⏰ been trying to fix my sleep schedule / body clock, so this is a major win!
leisurely morning routine and breakfast before work is sooooo important!! πŸ₯ž
peer-review code (~13x!!)πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ
fixed a major bug!! πŸ› and two other bugs i found because i'm an overachiever like that πŸ’β€β™€οΈ
went to an interesting lunch and learn!! πŸ˜‹
afternoon... πŸ™οΈ
hot-fix!! πŸ”₯πŸš’ (for a component that somehow got left out of a recent migration...)
meeting with some beta testers that went really well ☺️ i'm so proud since i led the project and endured a lot... like, A LOT for it πŸ₯²
another meeting, this time to finalize documentation across teams in preparation for release... kinda boring tbh, but necessary 🀝
set up even MORE monitoring in preparation for release + clean up some tech debt while i'm at it πŸ–₯️
evening~ πŸŒ†
meetings with my manager and manager's manager πŸ’Ό i can't deal with office politics, tbh, so i just view these as catch ups with older friends who i happen to work with...
internal testing meeting for a colleague's project~ πŸ‘
company-wide meeting~ (basically my time to be nosy about all the other departments) πŸ‘€
πŸ’Œ: until next time~! 🧑

Websites to practice Front-End
(22/02/2023)
Today I wanted to share websites to practice your frontend skills.
Front-end is complicated for my head (ask me to solve an algorithm with structure while but not to center a div HUEHHUE).
BUT at the same time I love a well done and coded design/ui. That's why today I want to share resources to help you train
1- Front-End Practice
Tumblr media
They have 3 levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced. There's no "answer" so you can't copy the code, it's just you trial and error until you get to the template (which really is a website that exists)
Tumblr media
One thing I thought was really cool here was that it tells you what you're going to practice the most in the exercise, color palette and search features.
It's very interesting for a front-end not to be dependent on a tutorial, because from what I've seen in interviews, they ask you to make a layout and you won't be able to make one yourself if you don't learn to break down a single layout from the beginning and try and making mistakes until it's perfect.
2- DevChallenges
Tumblr media
I find the projects not only beautiful visually but also interesting to practice. Here you already have the solutions that other people recommend, but again I think it's best for us to try and make mistakes until we get similar. And it also sorts the levels.
Here an example:
Tumblr media
Cool huh? Well, I hope this helps someone who is looking for projects to practice with. We can invest a lot of time trying to make a layout, so having something ready I know helps a lot.
I wish you good studies and a great Wednesday, drink water.

A little about me!
I'm learning to code through multiple means and websites, and I'm currently focusing on:
*HTML, CSS & Javascript (Harnessing those basics for Web dev) *Python (For my 8 month course that starts in January) In the near future, I hope to learn C#, so I can look into .ASP NET too! I'm hoping to become a junior Software Engineer or Developer this time next year.
I have a couple of side hobbies, learning the violin takes place over at @viowlett. I've recently started that and hope learning coding and violin side by side will keep my brain busy!

some thoughts on imposter syndrome
i just started a new software engineering job last week and today i talked with my manager on dealing with imposter syndrome.
Common feelings:
i don't know what i don't know to ask questions
feeling useless and not really helping the team
i could contribute to the team's work if i knew how to contribute
Manager's thoughts:
sometimes you just have to sit with it!
soon you'll be busy enough you forget about all of these feelings
i am not expected to be doing anything but reading documents and learning and experimenting so don't be upset
so much information is out there, so take in what you can and you can learn as you go but don't feel rushed to learn everything at once
your job is to learn so don't feel guilty about just learning and not contributing.. once this feeling impedes you from working and learning, then that's a problem
this feeling will pass and it'll be okay

🩰 that girl diaries // smart girl spring 🌸
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have commitment issues and i can't tell if it's because of apathy (and trying not to feel that way anymore) or because i genuinely get excited about EVERYTHING πŸ™ƒ either way, if i have too many goals and not enough time, am i even working towards goals anymore or am i just kind of ~doing things~? πŸ˜…
🩰 randomly starting ballet basics??

⋆. how to find tech communities ⋆.ೃ࿔*:ο½₯
Having a good supportive community while learning can be super helpful! It's always nice to be able to find a group of individuals who are also going through the same thing you are. Here are some ways I have found communities in the tech sphere ヽ(β—•α΄₯β—•)οΎ‰
Meetup Meetup creates possibilities to find and build local communities who share your interests! Here's an example of some groups I've joined:
Tumblr media
Newsletters Newsletters are also a great way to get information about cool events/meetups happening in the tech space β˜†.q.:* I am personally subscribed to Lizzie, she posts about events happening in Sf and NY. (you don't actually have to subscribe to read her current and past posts, just hit the "no thanks" under the entry box)
Twitter Many companies or dev advocates/community builders who work at x company will post a ton about upcoming meetups hosted by them! So I highly recommend you find a company or community you'd like to be a part off and follow them on twitter (β–°Λ˜β—‘Λ˜β–°) here are some I follow: SFClimateWeek ReactMiamiConf DevsNDumps SeattleJS GirlCode PayPalDev RenderATL Postman AhmadAwais Whitep4nth3r Official_GDC LWJShow GitHubEducation WomenTechmakers hackclub hacktoberfest femtechconf cassidoo pwic_org lesbiantech OutInTech PrideinSTEM GoogleStudents CodeNewbies
Discord There are sooooo many amazing huge communities on discord for each community within tech, here are some I recommend: DesignBuddies: focus is on ux/ui designers, ux research, pm, graphic design LearnWLeon(100Devs): HUGE community of beginner to intermediate software devs. It's also a completely free bootcamp! DiscordDevs: discords server is a great place to learn about different discord features to better help you navigate other servers you join. You also can get 1on1 help with building discord bots which is such a fun thing to work on! My Server: I try really hard to curate a welcoming and helpful community. If you ever need any help with hw, projects, or even general tech career help we're all super down to help ʕっ‒‿‒ʔっ
I hope this helps β™‘
