hello! i’m looking for a fic where sokka suddenly transmigrated into the modern world (and vice versa with the modern sokka into the atla universe); the part i remember clearest is how he found suki (who’s a cheerleader along with the rest of kyoshi warriors in that modern world) so he joined the squad, became a cheerleader, and suki drove him home but he didn’t remember his address so he had to call katara to ask. thank you so much!

Here's the thing. I'm a girl, and as a girl, I really like it when girls are portrayed in fiction. Especially fantasy.
But so much fiction/fantasy mixes up 'girls' with 'unstoppable forces of female badass' and there's not necessarily anything wrong with having a character who is an 'unstoppable forces of female badass'. But it gets old real quick. And it is not the same as portraying normal girls, or having good female characters.
And that's one of the many reasons I love Avatar the Last Airbender.
Because all the girl characters have flaws and weaknesses and sometimes act like idiots or jerks. They get emotional and make mistakes. They lose fights or arguments or are just wrong sometimes. Some of them are amazing warriors, and some aren't. Some are powerful or special and some are normal, with nothing special about them.
And I Love that.
I was around the same age as Katara when I first watched Atla. And I instantly connected with her as a character. I loved her optimistic attitude and her fighting spirit. And I could relate with her anger, and with her maternal instinct. I admired her fighting skills of course, but I loved how the show portrayed her compassion and kindness, the way she could both beat up a bunch of bullies AND enjoy a relaxing day at the spa. She was a baddass warrior that should never be crossed. But she was also a normal teenage girl who had a lot of the same internal struggles and problems that I did.
(I never connected to Toph on the same level, but I did relate to her on a few things. She's an adorable trash gremlin who would commit any crime for fun and I love that. But she struggles with being both independent and letting people help her, and I still struggle with that sometimes. I've learned that sometimes, you can help others by letting them help you.)
Yue is, in my opinion, a perfect example of a type of hero that seems to be disappearing. She is not a warrior. She is not a fighter. She's not even a bender.
Yue is a perfect princess, a perfect daughter. She is extremely feminine in a rather older sense.
And she was the only one who could save the world. She gave up everything for her people. She saved everything, everyone, the entire world. Without ever becoming a fighter.
Yue is a perfect example of a girl who was never more than a girl, and how that's okay. Not every girl has to be rough and tumble and fight for her rights in order to change everything. Sometimes it's okay to just be a quiet obedient girly girl. Sometimes that's all it takes to be a hero.
And I love that. Yue is strong in her own way. She is unique and interesting. She appears in only a few episodes and yet manages to be one of my favorite characters.
Song is another great example of this. Song is a healer in a small town. We don't see much of her but we see her compassion and empathy. She is gentle and generous. A healer not a fighter.
She watches Zuko steal her ostrich horse and does nothing.
Is that because she's kind and generous and knows he needs it more? Or is it because she's a healer girl who knows she can't actually stop those two from taking the horse? Maybe neither, maybe both. I have always thought that the scene where Zuko steals the horse and only the audience knows she saw it is one of the most thought-provoking in the series.
Suki is a badass warrior woman who is an awesome fighter and good leader. She is one of the best non bender fighter we see in the entire show. She was one of the smartest, most efficient, and powerful characters we ever saw.
She kissed a boy she had just met because she thought he was cute.
Now don't get me wrong I love SokkaxSuki. Its one of the best couples in the show.
But Suki totally did the old 'love at first sight' thing. And that is awesome. Because when she kisses him she delivers one of the best lines, not only from her, but, I think, in the entire show.
"I AM a warrior, but I'm a girl too."
Being a warrior doesn't mean that she isn't also a teenage girl. She might be a fighter, but she still gets crushes and likes to flirt with cute boys. And hey, she picked a good one. Not every boy is going to come break you out of prison.
Anyways, let's have more realistic girls in fiction. And please enjoy the next 24 hours.

I know you're SokkaxSuki fan but could you imagine happy life for Sokka and Yue, what it would be like?
I think they would have had a very nice life together. It would have looked very traditional- in a modern AU, Yue would probably have been a stay at home mom of two or three. There would have been enough mutual respect and affection that it would've been a mostly happy dynamic. The first few empty nester years would've been tough on them, though.
I know a lot of people would want Yue to come away from her roots as a girl from a very gender stratified home, but I think aside from the fact that she didn't get to choose her life partner, she would have mostly been fine with that life. She certainly wouldn't have challenged Sokka's views on womanhood and feminism. I don't think Sokka's misogyny was so deeply rooted that he wouldn't have been open to unlearning some of the worst of his beliefs, though. And I think memories of his parents' marriage would encourage him to figure out how to have a mutually respectful relationship with his wife. I also don't think Sokka or Yue would go super hard on getting their children to conform to their ideas of gender and womanhood, especially if they have an Aunt Katara to look up to.

Pokemon Sleep
Recorded sleep on my phone instead of the PokeGo Plus+ for the first time in a while because it was running low on battery. It picked up me snoring A LOT.
4 Pokemon were extra hungry. Most I've seen so far.
Unpacking
Think I've had Unpacking on my list longer than A Little to the Left so I figured I should play this one too.
Such a chill game. Played 3 levels and enjoyed each one.
Balatro
So many people talking about this game so trying it.
Lost on the second Ante (boss) but even in just that short run I get why it's being talked about so much. Poker's a great thing to add a roguelike to.
Spoilers for Avatar below
Avatar the Last Airbender
Episode 2: Warriors
(Don't remember the exact order of things since I'm actually writing this the day after) The Gaang head to Kyoshi Island so Aang can learn how to be the Avatar. They're sorta unwelcome in that they have 48 hours to learn what they can. Katara finds a water bending scroll and begins to practice. Aang's slightly weird about doing so too. Suki and Sokka get closer as warriors. Zuko and Iroh go to a port to get info. They meet Zhao. They get wind of Aang on Kyoshi and head there. Aang figures out how to contact Kyoshi but while doing so the fire benders arrive on the island. The Kyoshi warriors defend their town while Katara defends Aang. Kyoshi gives a vision of the Northern Water Tribe then takes over Aang's body and saves everyone.the Gaang leave for the north.
So we found out this was dubbed into Tagalog so we started watching it dubbed with English subtitles. I think it's somehow more entertaining this way.
The musical cues being (almost?) the exact same as the show is actually throwing me off a bit.
As someone who liked SokkaxSuki, there was a bit too much on the relationship between Sokka and Suki in this episode. It felt like there were too many/too long "accidental" gazing into each other's eyes scenes. Like her staring when he was shirtless was way too long.
I did really like how toned down the other villagers role was. His fan club in the show was kind of annoying.
Never really thought about it before but it's funny how a novice water bender that just barely learned how to control it can take out soldiers.
Kyoshi being crazy taller than Aang was hilarious. Her Avatar State scene was cool too.

Marry Me? Sukka Week
“Gran Gran?” Suki was in the igloo with Gran Gran learning how to make traditional water tribe food.
“Yes sweetheart what is it?” Gran Gran replied as she ripped some seaweed noodles apart.
“Can I ask you something.” Suki nervously fiddled with something in her coat pocket.
“Of course sweetheart. What is it?” Gran Gran put the seaweed noodles in the pot of boiling water. Suki stepped closer to her go watch what seasonings she put in the soup. The steam from the pot warmed Suki’s reddened face. She loved being in the South Pole with Sokka but the cold was almost unbearable for her tropical body.
“Do you think Sokka would want to marry me?”
Gran Gran jumped and looked at her grandson’s auburn haired warrior girlfriend. She took Suki’s face in her palms, “ Why of course he would!” Gran Gran was overcome with joy.
“But when is the question? I’ve been by his side since forever. We’re almost 20 now...”
Suki stirred the pot as Gran Gran added the seasonings. The igloo filled with scrumptious aromas. As she stirred the pot, Suki couldn’t help but reminisce on when she realized he was it.
They were on a team Avatar vacation in Ember Island. The war had just ended and life was good.
“SUKI!”
“Yes Sokka?”
“Look what I made you!” He gave her that goofy-lopsided smile that she adored and held up a vibrant lei.
“Do you like it?”
Suki was grinning from ear to ear. His gesture touched her deeply.
“Sokka... I love it!” She threw her arms around him and nestled her face into his bare shoulder. She took in his salty beach scent and sighed.
What did I ever do to deserve you?
Sokka brushed her auburn locks away from her face and put the lei around her neck. He took a step back to examine his girlfriend.
Suki gazed at him adoringly. His face was so concentrated and serious she had to giggle.
“What?” His voice squeaked which caused her to to giggle even more.
“You are just too cute. She leaned toward him and locked her lips onto his. He picked her up and spun her around. They laughed and danced the rest of the evening without a care in the world. The stars and waves seemed to dance with them and go Suki the world was in harmony
Suki smiled at the happy memory. Gran Gran looked up at her and smiled.
“Are you thinking of him?”
“Yeah,”Suki sighed, “I’m just...I don’t wanna wait anymore. I wanna spend my whole life with him by my side. I never wanna say goodbye ever again.”
“My dear, “ she put her hand on the young warriors shoulder, “I think if you asked him to marry you he would say yes.” She smiled.
“I thought the water tribe had a tradition of the male asking the girl?”
Gran Gran chuckled and added the fish into the soup, “Suki. Suki.Suki. You of all girls should know that some traditions are meant to be broken!”
Suki was taken aback, “I thought you out of all people would love to stick to the tradition.”
Gran Gran chuckled some more, “Suki, my dear, there’s a lot that you don’t know about me. I myself was an emblem of breaking traditions back in my day.”
Suki looked at the old women curiously, “What did you do?”
“I ran away from a sexist man in the water tribe. I left him because I didn’t love him! We did arranged marriage up there. I came here and found myself.”
Suki was in awe, “Wow, you are so brave.”
Gran Gran took the boiling pot off the fire and set her brittle hand on Suki’s cheek, “And you my dear are even braver.”
————————————————-
After dinner, Sokka went to his dad’s igloo to ask for some advice.
“Hey dad!” The young water tribe boy hit his shoes on the door Gran to get all the snow off.
“Hello son! What brings you here?”
“I need to ask you for advice. It’s about Suki.”
Hakoda’s eyes widened and he gestured for his beloved son to sit by the fire with him, “What’s on your mind Sokka?”
“When did you realize you loved mom?”
Hakoda sighed, “I have loved your mother since we were teenagers, “ smiled remembering his late wife, “ I have always known that I loved her. Every second with your mother was like a dream that I didn’t want to wake up from. The moment I realized I wanted to spend my life with her was when we were about 18 years old. The fire nation attacked our tribe. The first thing I thought of was her. Where she was. If she was safe.”
“Wow dad.” Sokka rested his hand on his father’s shoulder.
“What about you son. When did you realized you were in love with Suki.”
Sokka thought for a moment. “I have always loved her.”
“But when did you realize that she was it for you.”
Sokka closed his eyes and thought for a moment. Then he remembered.
It was a cold winter’s night about two years ago. The snow began to fall in the South Pole.
Suki’s eyes lit up. She ran ahead of Sokka, her auburn hair flowing behind her. She twirled around herself as the snow thickened around her. Her laugh filled the evening with music. Her smile lit up the dark winter of the South Pole.
Sokka was mesmerized by her aura. This girl brought light wherever she went. She brought light into his world. She found joy in things as little as snow. Sokka stared at his beautiful girl friend with stars in his eyes.
“Sokka! It’s snowing!” She shrieked as she fell into the power beneath her. She started to play in it and Sokka laughed.
“Sokka! Come on.” She flashed a smile at him and his heart skipped a beat.
The auburn hair warrior got up and pounced on her boyfriend causing both of them to collapse into the snow. She giggled and brushed his chocolate brown hair away from his face. Sokka looked up at her. Her cheeks and nose were as red as a cherry. It was as if she had been kissed by the snow. Her hair was messy and damp but it still fell in the right places. Her violet eyes shined and pierced their way into Sokka’s loving gaze.
“Hi!” She smiled and nuzzled her nose on his. His stomach clenched and his heart fluttered.
Was this even real? How is she real?
Later that night, Sokka watched her go to sleep. She looked precious wrapped up in those fluffy water tribe blankets and in Sokka’s arm. He watched her body gently rise and fall.
How are you real?
He stroked her hair and she shifted even closer to him. Her arms made their way around Sokka and she cuddled into him.
“I love you.” Sokka’s heart jumped.
Did she just say that?
It was at that moment that he realized she was it.
————————————————
Suki laid on Sokka’s chest and listened to the sound of his heart beat. The fire crackled and filled the room with warmth.
“Sokka?”
“Yes Suki?”
“Can we take a walk? I want to ask you something.”
“I would love that.”
The two warriors rose from their shared bed and put on their winter coats. Suki fiddled with the item in her pocket.
The two of them walked for about an hour, sharing their thoughts, listening to each other, gazing into each other’s eyes, and stealing kisses. It was nights like these that Suki treasured. The world being silent was her favorite thing about being in the South Pole. Well, almost her favorite. Sokka beat the silence.
“I then I was like...WHOOO NOOO.” Sokka flailed his arms in the air. She covered her mouth with her mittened hand.
The two of them stopped at the end of a cliff. The sky was beautiful that night. Lights of blue, green, and purple painted the sky. Suki gazed at it in awe.
“Wow...” she sighed.
Sokka glances over at his girlfriend. She was wrapped in warm clothes from head to toe. You could only see her face. Suki’s eyes fluttered as she gazed at the lights in the sky.
“Hey Suki.”
“Yes Sokka?”
“You know what the best view in the Southern Water tribe is right now?”
“There can’t be anything more beautiful than this Sokka.”
“It’s you!” He blurted. Suki turned her frost bitten face toward him. Her eyes were wide and her cheeks flushed an even darker shade of red.
She ran to him and jumped. Her legs around his torso and her arms did the same around his neck. He steadied her and brought his forehead to hers. She smiled at him and he kissed her sweetly.
“I love you Sokka.” She beamed.
“I love you too Suki.”
She hopped back down. Her face grew small.
“Sokka? I need to ask you something.”
Sokka’s brows knit together. He cocked his head to the side, “What is it Suki?”
The young warrior reached her hand into her coat pocket. When her hand came out she revealed a necklace. It wasn’t just any old necklace, it was a betrothal necklace. On the pendent was carved the joining of a fan and sword.
Sokka covered his mouth. She smiled at him with tears daring to spill out of her eyes.
“Suki...”
“Sokka.... will you be mine forever?” The tears streamed down her beautiful face.
Sokka’s face softened and tears began to spill out of his eyes. He took her hands, “Yes Suki. I will be yours forever.” He began to kiss her all over her face which caused her to snort. She pulled him in for a kiss. Suki lost her footing and stumbled down into the fresh powder bring Sokka down with her.
Sokka gazed into her violet eyes. Just like the lights in the sky, they were beautiful and painted his life with color.

apparently suki got sexy lamped (i didn’t watch the show but that’s what i heard) and that is one of the worst things that could ever happen to me. suki is snarky and passionate and excitable and bad at making jokes and she is way too cool for sokka but that’s why they work.
yeah what they did to every single girl in that thing is unconscionable but what they did to suki and yue especially is crazy because we’re meant to believe that they’re both #StrongWomen but also going crazy stupid for white devil sokka even though he has nothing to offer either of them, and is not attractive, charismatic, or intelligent. suki doesn’t like sokka because he’s a hot guy with a six pack (couldn’t even type that without snorting. sorry) she likes him because he displays humility, open-mindedness, intelligence, humor, and bravery. none of which he actually displays in natla, for the record (although i guess you could call him telling suki that “they should put a bell on her” humor???? if you’re stupid??????), certainly not humility or a willingness to expand his worldview. he doesn’t apologize for doubting her skill, he doesn’t admit he was wrong, he doesn’t let her feminize him (WHO is this cis white boy!!!), and he doesn’t change his mind on anything.
in fact, SHE is the one who thanks HIM for “showing her the world,” which is obviously crazy if you spend even a second thinking about it. SUKI is the one who firsts presents sokka with a reason to expand his worldview. SUKI is the one who disrupts SOKKA’s entrenched paradigms. the whole point is that sokka knows NOTHING of the world and SUKI is the first person who teaches him something. suki is the first person to show him that being a warrior is not a biologically determined fact, but rather a state of mind. suki is the first person to actually train him formally. suki is the first person who helps sokka to realize that people beyond his immediate family can value him outside of his role as protector/martyr. that she can like him because he’s open-minded and makes her laugh (and certainly not because she’s entranced by his shiny muscles). suki is, in fact, the one who shows sokka the world. yes, they’re both isolated and sheltered when the show begins, and suki’s decision to leave kyoshi island is in large part influenced by meeting sokka, and she does kind of go crazy stupid over him and is the first one to initiate their romance, but she’s still the one imparting a valuable lesson onto sokka, not the other way around.
suki works so well with sokka, like natla very unsubtly points out, because they do have a lot in common as kids who are also the designated leaders and warriors of their respective villages. they understand each other on this implicit level, and they’re both very smart and share a (quite dark) sense of humor, so they’re able to banter and spar and hang out as equals. but they’re also different enough to balance each other out. sokka plans while suki reacts. sokka is cerebral whereas suki is kinetic. sokka is tightly wound whereas suki helps him relax. suki is confident in her own skin whereas sokka is deeply insecure and neurotic. she helps him loosen up and get out of his own head, and in turn he supports her and admires her unconditionally. sokka demonstrates to suki that he would do anything to help her, and suki demonstrates to sokka that he can accept her help and doesn’t need to shoulder every single burden alone out of some perverse guilt/martyr complex. they protect each other, have each others backs, make jokes together, hype each other up. they’re each other’s right hand arm man silly rabbit.
the reason suki is able to forgive sokka for his sexist comments is because he immediately apologizes when she proves him wrong. he humbles himself and demonstrates that he knows he has a lot to learn from her. he then also, after like, a couple hours at most of receiving any kind of formal hand to hand training for the first time in his life, manages to beat her. the thing about suki is that she’s also very proud. even prouder than sokka, if you consider that her confidence is 100% real and not a feigned defense mechanism like his is. and so the fact that she loses to him, even just in this one moment, does force her to reevaluate him. like, he’s obviously full of shit when he boasts of his skills (he has no formal training to speak of), we all know that, but he is nonetheless incredibly skilled. and suki has to acknowledge that, because i don’t think anyone who has been learning the form she’s spent her entire life mastering for less than a day has ever gotten the better of her like that before. and it’s certainly not because he’s a boy, or biologically superior; it’s because he’s smart enough to know how to adapt. and that intelligence is demonstrated not only in his skill, but also his willingness to completely upend everything he’s been taught within the span of a few hours.
this episode is in fact crucial for sokka, not because he learns how to fight or because he “stops being sexist” (imo, he’s still sexist, but that’s for another post), but because it demonstrates to the audience how sokka’s mind works, and how fucking impressive he is. i know that it may seem like this episode is just an after school special teaching young boys to be nicer to their sisters (and it is very much that), but it’s also illustrative of how sokka is able to process and synthesize new information and immediately change his mind. i’ve called sokka the personification of the scientific method before, and what i mean by that is that he is constantly absorbing new empirical data into his worldview and updating it accordingly. contrast this mindset with zuko’s, or even katara’s. how many times do they have to have the same lesson drilled into their heads over and over and over again before they actually properly internalize it? i’m not saying that zuko and katara are bad or stupid, to be clear, they’re actually incredibly realistic. sokka is the one who is unrealistically open-minded and intelligent. toph is really the only other character in the gaang who matches his sheer level of brilliance, creativity, and ingenuity.
so the reason this episode is valuable for establishing who sokka is, is just. completely negated by the way he’s portrayed in natla, as just some “hot” guy to ogle over. he doesn’t display his scientific mind, he doesn’t expand his worldview, he doesn’t complicate his own gender identity by wearing traditionally feminine garb, he doesn’t give suki or us, the audience, any reason to actually like him. and when he gets to omashu and starts expressing to the mechanist his aptitude for engineering, it feels completely hollow and unearned because at no point prior has he demonstrated that this mind works in a scientific way. we’re just expected to believe that he’s an engineering prodigy despite being given no prior evidence that even thinks logically.
in fact, everything that is unique and subtle about sokka is completely stripped away by this white devil. he isn’t “the only man” left in the village so he seems absolutely stupid insisting that he shoulders a unique burden. he constantly communicates his deepest emotions so he ends up sounding more like zuko or katara than sokka. he isnt funny, although i think he tries to be but simply lacks any charm. he isnt humble, he isnt depressed, he isnt intelligent, he isnt stupidly loyal and self-sacrificing. he acts more like a jock who magically knows engineering than a nerd who kills people. and suki seems like an absolute fool for being so obsessed with this absolutely worthless white boy, instead of the wonderful, confident girl who knows exactly what she wants and gets it.
meanwhile, yue, on the other hand, IS a girlboss who knows exactly what she wants, and it’s CRAZY. they completely reduce everything that makes her character important by turning her into a liberated woman (despite the nwt still being sexist???) who breaks off her own arranged marriage because she just wasn’t feeling it (even though THIS version of hahn is gorgeous and kind and respectful, so like…… huh??) and is a badass waterbender who talks back to her father. she wears euphoria makeup and a party city wig as she tells us (like she may as well be talking into the camera) that sokka is the hottest guy she’s ever seen (which would make more sense if the guy who played sokka played hahn and VICE VERSA, but i digress) and she loves him for…. reasons??? certainly not because he represents a figure beyond her limited paradigm, and certainly not because he’s charming or kind or makes her laugh or treats her like a person. and certainly not because they both feel restricted by their respective patriarchal duties to their fathers and to their people, because yue doesn’t feel restricted at all, and the extent of sokka’s daddy issues are simply “hakoda was mean to him because he sucks at ice dodging” (which is also crazy, for many reasons). they just feel like two people who were forced together because the narrative demanded it, and not because they have any sort of meaningful thematic connection that deepens both their stories. it’s horrendous.
ultimately, the ways in which these characters (and every character) are reduced are reflective of some incredibly dire patterns in these soulless, corporately produced objects of commerce that barely pass as art. “sokka’s sexism is too problematic so instead we’re going to change every single element of the story so that no one has any sort of objectionable flaws — or depth.” i know i talk a lot about sokka here, but they also massacre aang, and (especially!) katara, and even zuko (even though the guy playing zuko was definitely giving it his all). and azula and iroh and everyone else (except for ken leung and danny pudi who are innocent). they don’t want to create anything nuanced or intricate, but they want to make it marketable, so they advertise it as “appealing to a game of thrones audience.” i’ve always hated game of thrones, but it’s still leagues better than this. in fact, i think it might even be better for women than this. i don’t think it’s that hard to understand a Y-7 nickelodeon cartoon (although the takes ive seen on here do make me wonder…) and yet somehow the writers of this monstrosity managed to get every single facet wrong. distressingly wrong. every time i think about it i get mad all over again. smh

There are many reasons why I love the ship Sukka, today I want to tell you about this little moment given to us in one of the comics.
Tumblr media
Everyone who ships this wonderful couple knows this scene very well and we love it because it shows us, once again, just how in sync they are.
In this specific case, we see how much Sokka is a supportive boyfriend towards Suki's interests. He cares about her, so what is important to her becomes important to him too. Although we know very well that Sokka is not a fan of the music of the band, I find it very adorable and sweet that he wanted to go to the concert with her who, on the contrary, is clearly enthusiastic and happy about it (Suki's excitement is another thing that I find adorable).
And not just any seats, but in the front row even!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Without, however, losing themselves. In fact, they even tease each other about it. Cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what I'm writing is nothing new, in fact what I wanted to point out is this scene here.
Tumblr media
Look at Sokka here. Maybe it's just me, but it makes me smile the way he looks at his girlfriend. He is clearly amused by Suki's reaction but, at the same time, I think he seems so full of affection and love. I adore it!
