Here is a list of 10 Black artists/bands you might enjoy if you're millennial indie trash like me, roughly in order from better to lesser known and accompanied by a single song rec. There are, of course, more than 10 Black indie artists I listen to and even more that exist (and lots more songs just by these artists/bands!), so please do drop your recs in the comments.
(and yes "indie" means very little but whatever you know what I means it's vibes OK?!?)
Artist: Solange Jumping-off point song: Losing You Yeah, she's Beyonce's younger sister and fairly famous, but hear me out: I feel like she is perceived as overexposed as a result and therefore is sometimes dismissed as an artist. She really is fantastic and has her own thing going. I honestly don't think her singing voice sounds anything like the other Knowles's. Her style is definitely unique, too.
Band: Bloc Party Jumping-off point song: Flux You may know at least one song by them, even if you don't realize it. They've been featured on video games like Need for Speed Pro Street, FIFA 06, Burnout Revenge, and Guitar Hero 3, as well as TV shows like Skins, Waterloo Road, and How I Met Your Mother. The frontman, Kele Okereke, has also released his own solo stuff.
Artist: Santigold Jumping-off point song: Disparate Youth Formerly known as Santogold, she's opened for acts ranging from The Beastie Boys to MIA and Bjork, plus she was name-dropped by Beyonce in Break My Soul (The Queens Remix).
Band: TV on the Radio Jumping-off point song: Young Liars They've been one my faves since the first day I heard them ~20 years ago and have stayed in the rotation ever since.
Band: Alabama Shakes Jumping-off point song: Don't Wanna Fight The band is on indefinite hiatus for a lot of reasons ranging from messy to objectively awful. That said, what a fantastic and highly influential band, especially considering how relatively short-lived and recent its existence was.
Artist: Ekkstacy Jumping-off point song: i walk this earth all by myself For the record, Ekkstacy himself has expressed annoyance at the comparison. But! The first time I heard him, I immediately was reminded of Bloc Party in a good way, and I'm not the only one.
Band: Black Kids Jumping-off point song: I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You The first time I came across this band, I was convinced the band name was indie irony, like the band Girls. I was wrong. Also, the lyrics to their aforementioned biggest song is accidentally a transmasc mood.
Artist: Toro Y Moi Jumping-off point song: Talamak I've seen a lot of artists live, and his slot at Desert Daze is one of the best performances I've ever seen. The music is danceable and the lyrics poetic and thoughtful, yet unpretentious.
Artist: Yuno Jumping-off point song: No Going Back A man after my own heart, he mentions HIM’s Razorblade Romance and AFI’s Sing The Sorrow among the albums that have influenced him.
Artist: Blood Orange Jumping-off point song, more normal song edition: You're Not Good Enough Jumping-off point song, trippy glam edition: Uncle ACE This is the artist and song that inspired me to write this list, because I absolutely cannot get enough of both of these songs right now, so he gets two song recs. Fun fact: Dev Hynes has collaborated with Minimalist icon and ye olde meme Phillip Glass.

"Ditto" by NewJeans
DV:
While it's not the consensus pick ("Super Shy", because the critics love Erika de Casier) or the cool kids' pick ("OMG", per cool kid Crystal Leww), "Ditto" was my absolute favorite NewJeans song this year, not to mention the one that kicked off their ongoing imperial phase. "Ditto" showcases the group's earnestness and emotional vulnerability, intense feelings delivered via straightforward hooks. It also proved irresistible to DJs and remixers - the first time I heard "Ditto" it was as an edit on Soundcloud, and in the past year I've heard this hook over everything from pinkpantheress-style garage (obvious, irresistible) to Jersey club (massive banger, would lose my shit if I was in a club) to amapiano (you know, it's a fun concept, good try.) "Ditto" is indelible and yet flexible enough to remain itself in any of these settings, but ultimately it's the original version that I return to the most. It's easy to see what the DJs love about "Ditto", and easy to fall in love with it for the same reasons: the synth washes add a subtle layer of melody, but this is a song for vocals and percussion - at a distance, you might forget you're hearing anything but snare and clapping and singing, and "Ditto" is so tightly composed that it can work at that level alone. It's a tapestry of hooks, stitched together by a series of nonsense words that carry emotional heft - from "ra ta ta ta" to the bookending "Hoo hoo"s to "ditto" itself. It can be sliced and stretched and still maintain its identity, still be recognizably itself even when it's moved to an entirely unexpected context. NewJeans deliver "Ditto" so sweetly that it's easy to miss how singularly unmistakable it is.
MG:
NewJeans, I learned from DV on the night of our SOTY summit, are a “little sister” group in the k-pop pantheon. I don’t keep up with k-pop; I fell into the “critics” bracket, preferring “Super Shy” because it was interesting to see Erika de Casier’s airy, petal-light R’n’B embraced by an entertainment and media machine. (I like her but she can be a bit Grimes-y where it’s like, lol, you’re not gonna get picked for the next Rihanna record, stop trying.) I’m not a little sister, either, but I appreciate their uphill battle for recognition. From Bianca’s scheming in 10 Things I Hate About You to Beth’s untimely death in Little Women to Solange Knowles and Ashlee Simpson, little sisters have to work twice as hard to get half the credit. NewJeans might be more “little sister” as a marketing class, aiming for tweens and under as a target audience, but “Ditto” really speaks to their experience, beginning with the title – a faint copy of an original – and developing further with lyrics about “stay[ing] in the middle,” the Promethean resting place of all younger siblings. I don’t know that this was the year of the little lister, I don’t know that any year ever will be, but it’s fun to shine a brief spotlight on all the babies out there.

Maaaaan this is a big one for me as I have been a fan of MOJOE for many years, and when we sat down to do this they informed me that I had never interviewed them before. Which is something I can't even fathom given the amount of times I have seen them live and how much I have listened to them and such. But I guess that is the case and this edition of Talk So Real is my first real talk with two of my favorites.
MOJOE was a walking revolution from San Antonio back in the day. A live band hip hop experience that had it all and could not be questioned. The title of their Classic.Ghetto.Soul album summed it all up, and after a bit of a hiatus (in which rapper Easy Lee started a group called Third Root with MexStep and DJ Chicken George) they are back with a new album about to drop called Ancient Future Soul, which also sums things up. The guys played the record for me and a few other good folks and then we sat down to do the interview in the lovely upstairs portion of Simona's Coffee Bar in the Colton House Hotel on South Congress here in Austin. It really went down as they say. Word to Raf.
On this episode we discuss such things as Beyonce and Solange's father Matthew Knowles signing them, Sun Ra, Johnna Lister, why sometimes people including myself and themselves need a hiatus, real soul music, Texas music, the game, we cover a lot of things and I think you will enjoy this one. Please tell a friend to tell a friend to dial into this Talk So Real movement, and thank you so much for your support.

“ When I first started, 21 years ago, I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because black people did not sell. Clearly that has been proven a myth.”
