The Signet Library.

I noticed there was a exhibition on at the upper floor of The Signet Library, David Eustice: Thereafter. I'd never heard of him, but it gave me chance to see the library an iconic building for Scottish solicitors in its location adjacent to Scotland’s Supreme Courts complex on Parliament Square.

While some of the art, which is modern, was okay, I enjoyed the library for what it is a lot more.

While the collection of books, dates back many years, the building it is now housed in was built just over 200 years ago.

The grand opening of the Signet Library building is linked to its use during King George IV’s visit to Edinburgh in August 1822. The king used the Upper Library as a reception room prior to a great banquet held in his honour in neighbouring Parliament Hall. On seeing the room, the king reportedly declared it “the most beautiful drawing room in Europe.”

If you're in the area during the next week or so the exhibition is on until the 13th, , 10 am – 4 pm each day, it'll be a nice peaceful retreat from the hullabaloo of the annual Festival Fringe that you will have passed on your way in.

There’s something great about telling the salesperson at my door that my work pays for my internet so I can’t switch to anything else.

The mental gymnastics they jump through to come up with some angle to counter the giant brick wall of what is essentially you telling them “I don’t make these decisions, and I can’t put you in contact with the person who does.” is fun to watch. They always concede pleasantly after a moment or two.

“Well, have a good day.”

“You too, man.”

It should be noted that my work does NOT pay for my internet.

We used to get some churches and ‘just a moment of your time’ door to door people coming by Dad’s. I got really sick of it.

Now they walk up, read the sign, laugh, and leave.

March 1st 1682 saw the Advocate’s Library opened by its founder, Sir George Mackenzie, the Lord Advocate.

The Advocates Library, is the law library of the Faculty of Advocates, in Edinburgh. It served as the national deposit library of Scotland until 1925, at which time through an Act of Parliament was created the National Library of Scotland. All the non-legal collections were given to the National Library. Today, it alone of the Scottish libraries still holds the privilege of receiving a copy of every law book entered at Stationers’ Hall.

The Advocates Library is the library of the Faculty of Advocates. It is widely regarded as the finest working law library in the British Isles. It contains a comprehensive range of materials built up over more than three hundred years. The present library, seen in the picture,was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1830, and is a category A listed building.The library forms part of the complex that includes Parliament House, including the High Courts, located on the Royal Mile behind St Giles.

Famous keepers of the library down the years has included David Hume, Adam Ferguson, and Margaret Kidd, the first and only female, who held the post from 1956 till 1970.

You can read more about the history and the workings of the library buy Stephen O’Rourke who was Keeper of the Advocate’s Library for a short time in 2021 before hi sudden death that same year.
