putting my stranger things band au out into the world

weve got steve on main vocals/guitar

robin on bass/backup vocals (although there are a couple songs where she takes main)

do they have a specific genre? who tf knows i chose these songs for their lyrics and story but i imagine some would be modified to create a more uniform sound

now for the album in order(please hear me out on some of these):

Dear Reader- Taylor Swift (steves song to dustin)

BNBG- Djo (steve meeting eddie and discovering hes bi)

To Love a Boy- Maya Hawke (robin song!! self explanatory)

Change- Djo (steve reflecting on who he used to be vs who he is now)

Dial Drunk- Noah Kahan (steve gets arrested for xyz and his parents wont answer)

Somebody’s Baby- Sidney Gish (robin song 2!! start of her crush on nancy)

Acolyte- Slaughter Beach, Dog (90% written by steve before eddies death and finished after)

Run the World!!!- Dayglow (written by max! they all call it their fun song but its definitely still more about her ptsd and depression)

Strange Time- Matt Maltese (steve wrote this soon after eddie died)

Coffee- Chappell Roan (duet between steve and robin about their shared ex, nancy. they all ofc still love her and are very close friends but this was written during a rough patch post ronance breakup)

Brother- Fenne Lily (co-written by max and steve about their relationship)

ceilings- Lizzy McAlpine (steve keeps forgetting that eddie has died)

Francesca- Hozier (stobins soulmate song! written by robin because she knows steve feels guilty about dragging her into the upside down but she doesnt regret it because now she has him)

vague storyline is that steve starts getting into music to cope with all of the upside down shit sometime between end of season 1 and season 2. he starts seeing eddie after season 3 and is head over heels for him before eddie (still) dies at the end of season 4 and is (obviously) heartbroken.

after max heals she starts learning the drums to help process emotions better and also around this time robin and nancy start a budding romance. steve learns about max playing the drums and starts having jam sessions w her and later on robin also joins and its just very cathartic for them all. nancy and robin are kinda on again off again until steve and robin write Coffee together which firmly puts them in the past and they remain good friends after. (i love ronance i swear but for whatever reason in this au i just dont see them lasting longterm) (also i feel bad because the story of Coffee feels like it makes out nancy to be a villain and i love her i swear)

after a few years steve, robin, and max decide to start playing local bars and small shows and eventually are discovered and release their first and only album. the album gets wildly popular and they tour for a bit but none of them really wanted fame and decided that they really just preferred making music in their living rooms. they do pop up shows at small venues every now and again and they still consider themselves A Band.

likely they get rediscovered on tik tok or something and everyone is coming up with theories on the story of the album(stupid shit like ‘he said eddie in acolyte right’ ‘no dude he said annie steve isnt gay god some people’ or some weird love triangle involving steve robin and some mystery person) so they all make a video talking about the history of the band and steve comes out and opens up about how some of the songs are about eddies death (which starts another fire once people find out that steves eddie is eddie munson because obviously everyones heard of the hawkins murders at which point steve releases a video basically telling everyone to not talk about shit they know nothing about and to fuck off and leave him alone and after that the band is never heard from online again) happily ever after the end :) i just needed this out of my brain

One thing about me is that I collect special obsessions like they are antiques. Quite literally, you could catch me in an alleyway wearing a trenchcoat like a cartoon villain, except when I open it up the pockets are full of drugs they're full of the oddest assortment of shit. Do you want TV? I have Good Omens out the fucking wazoo, Supernatural if you're feeling a little burry your gays trope, and pirated Dickinson because your girl does not have the money or the will to get an Apple TV subscription. Books? Hell yeah, I work in a bookstore, babes. I have gut-wrenching classical mythology retellings, soft homosexual romances, dragons, lesbians galore, and the occasional Wilde and Austin. Music? I have all Hozier and Hozier adjacent artists that you could even picture. Historical events/archeology? Pockets are stuffed to the BRIM. I've got em' all, however, I am always looking for more. I am a HORDER. I am like a feral little crow that just goes around snagging different pieces of media that I find shiny and neat, and then stuffing them into my metaphorical trenchcoat until I simply collapse in on myself in my inevitable death. That being said, I decided, hey, lets try out Fleabag. I've heard nothing but good things alongside those who were permanently emotionally scarred by it- but even they have said nothing but amazing things. So, I log onto my student Amazon Prime Video, ready to spend my Tuesday binge-watching some British folk be British. Press play and BOOM, flashback. I'm a little taken back, I don't know these people. And yet I'm given this run down of past events, and I'm a little confused. Who are these people? I don't know! But I decide to live, laugh, love and just accept that this is a stylistic choice that I'm oddly okay with. So anyway, I binge that show like it is crack, and decide it is definitely going into the ol' trenchcoat. By the end I am crying so violently that I need to go sit in a church and contemplate what in the fresh fuck I just witnessed because I am in PAIN with that "it'll pass" fuckery that this man just laid on me. Anyway, I go to exit out to the main page for the show and low and behold my eyes are drawn to this little white button that tells me tHAT I'VE BEEN WATCHING SEASON TWO THIS ENTIRE TIME. It wasn't a style choice- I'm just illiterate. So now I'm contemplating watching season one, but I can't handle that pain. I feel like I just underwent a glitch in the matrix.

What do I do?

Do I go back to the church? Because low-key it was a vibe when I was going through it, definitely should have went there after Good Omens, but the last time I went in there and just sat I got this weird look from this one lady and I don't think I can handle that again.

Hello there! Can I get a twisted wonderland matchup? Starting off with my appearance I'm chubby and 5'1 with long ginger hair. I am a short king :). Regarding mbti I'm an ENTP. Also, with my personality my friends would describe me as "bubbly, weird, smart, honest, and kind". I asked em for traits for random internet quizzes so that's what they told me lol. Despite being a bit of an extrovert I also highly value my alone time to the degree I can become quite introverted. Moving onto hobbies I like playing video games, watching YouTube videos on random topics I'm interested in, listening to music, and reading. My favorite games tend to be RPGs. My fav games are probs Dragon Age, Skyrim, and Tomodachi life. I love to create characters in games and explore, and I especially enjoy building houses in games. Idk why but building houses gives me such joy. My favorite part of Skyrim is unironically the dlc that lets you build a house. I love to build that house and then get a husband and some kids. I consider that my end game goal verses the main quest which I've never actually finished despite putting 200 hours into Skyrim. For movies well I don't rlly watch movies much but my favorite series is probably star wars. Especially the prequels because I enjoy the characters more in those films and all the lore it adds. For music I kinda listen to everything, but my favorite artist is probably Hozier. The only genre I dislike is screamo probs. For things I hate uhhh I guess I dislike bugs, being put under pressure, and small spaces as I'm claustrophobic. Finally, going onto favorite idol I am going to go with a hisotrical example as I also love to learn about hisotry. I have many examples I could pick for figures I admire, but I'll go with a more famous example, Oscar Wilde. Just in case you don't know, Oscar wilde was a famous Irish author and playwright during the late 1800s. He was quite controversial for his opinions on art and morality, and he was a gay man at time where that was illegal. All of this lead up to him eventually getting arrested and jailed. I admire him because he didn't care that society thought he was wrong and immoral, he lived his life and gave his opinions despite it. Anyway that's it thanks!

Book #149 - I'm A Gay Wizard by V. S. Santoni

(in my defence, I bought this at a time when the promise of positive trans rep could get me to buy any book no further questions asked. also I hadn't realized that this is a wattpad book until it arrived in the mail. Do not be concerned, I have vowed betterment.)

The writing is so bizzare...

Like. Words mean things. Right? But this book continuosly uses... the wrong words? Like, the words on the page are just plainly the wrong words to convey what the book actually wants to convey.

For examples: At one point, someone was "mortified" when there was no reason within a country mile to be even slightly embarassed, and I think the book was going for "alarmed"? But I can't be sure. Also "[...] its shiny glass surface swallowing light, reflecting nothing." - then how the fuck can it be shiny, things are shiny when they reflect light. And so on. I swear, the entire book is like this.

And then at other points, the words are technically fine, but it's still just a bizarre way of phrasing things? Like the, uh.... Moment's Silence (Hozier girlies know what I mean) being described as finding a five dollar note in your couch when you were looking for a quarter, which... huh?? Or the first drops of oncoming rain as leaks in the sky's plumbing?? Or a rotting wooden plank unraveling like a ball of yarn.... Or a kiss being described as feeling like honey or chocolate, but then the taste is described as mint, "boy spit" (is... is there a difference? in taste? asking the bisexuals) and cola? Why would you use words invoking taste for the feeling, too, all this does is- anyway.

The world-building is so abyssmal that it made Starcrossed look less agrivating, and I am not saying that lightly. I know what I went through. Like, basic question: How many wizards are there? How much control do the Lineage parents have over normal-human affairs, if it is worth it to kill every non-Lineage wizard for fear of rebels? Why does the blurb on the back pretend that this is a wizard-school kind of story, when actually it is about a weird Institute that does fucked-up fascist eugenics shit that somehow, people just... take? How does the magic work, because it appears to be possible to cast spells without tinkering with the fabric of the universe? What's the difference between those spells, why are there magic symbols and circles and words if it seems to just work by "imagening" something happens? How do you justify portraying the making at the heart of our ineffablly complex, beautiful and contradictory world as fucking clockwork?

Tbh, now that I think about it, comparing this to Starcrossed  in general isn't that off-base? They are about equally bad (same bad pacing, same weird character building where they all come out as incredibly petulant and unfocused, same non-chemistry in the romance, same unexplained gaps in the plot and world).... it's just that Starcrossed knew what words meant, and I'm A Gay Wizard isn't full of problematic bullshit.

All in all, I guess I have, here, reinforced a prevelant pop cultural bias for myself. The internet warned me about wattpad, and now I've seen some of its published output for myself, and I can warn others. How nice. I guess.

here are some of my Nico headcanons that nobody asked for!!

He collects things. Not just Mythomagic stuff like he did as a kid, but cool shells, and rocks, and weird glass figurines that everyone else thinks are terrifying, and books. He’s got them in jars or lined up on shelves and he just has so many things (Because for so long he had so few things that actually belonged to him that didn’t have to serve a very clear purpose, so now he just wants to keep whatever he’d like)

He reads SO much as an adult. A lot of it is nonfiction because he’s trying to catch up on what happened in the world while he was pulled out of it, but a lot of fiction too (not really fantasy though, that’s too close to home) and a lot of poetry. He can recite poems from memory and will just randomly quote them sometimes and it should be pretentious but it isn’t and his friends think it’s amazing (cue dramatically saying "till love and fame to nothingness do sink" anytime he's told he has to wait) (Also, he will rant about why Ted Hughes sucks at any point in time)

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again!! He is a Dungeon Master! He’s got a binder for all the notes for his current campaign and a notebook for ideas and special highlighters and pens that he only uses for D&D. Also, dice are definitely one of the things he collects and he keeps them in those clear, plastic bead containers with dividers and they’re sorted by number of faces and also ~vibes~ (for example, do a backflip D20 and life or death D20)

leather jacket Nico di Angelo? seen, respected, and appreciated. CARDIGAN Nico di Angelo? underrated! He has a couple oversized cardigans with buttons and big pockets that he adores. The first one he ever had he definitely stole from Will but now, whenever he comes across another similar one, he buys it. The pockets are filled with rocks and worn, mass-market paperbacks and pens. (Basically, I’m leaning hard into English Major Nico with his annotated books and glasses and cardigans) (Also, cardigan Nico and flannel Will but sometimes they swap)

He definitely cuts his own hair in the bathroom and he's gotten very good at it. He's had a range of haircuts, from long hair to a mullet to the shaved sides and fluffy top, but he always ends up back with a shaggy mop that Hazel likes to put little braids in (or sometimes pull the very back of it into two little pigtails) and with bangs that always end up in his eyes.

Sorry to reiterate the same point that's been made forever, but his wardrobe is pretty dark-toned. Obviously black, but he does like a good jewel tone, perhaps a maroon or an emerald. Anything really bright was either a gift or belongs to Will someone else. Also, gendered clothing means nothing to him. He wears what he wants to wear and he thinks it's cool as hell when he's wearing a skirt while sparring and it flares out dramatically as he twirls.

He's kind of picked up modern slang but he also uses a lot of slang from pretty much every decade he missed. It's also a 50/50 chance he's using it incorrectly. (examples include: 1) Leo says something that is definitely supposed to be funny and Nico stares at him, utterly emotionless, and says "Gag me with a spoon" in an alarmingly monotone voice, and 2) Anytime he says something snarky to Jason or Percy he starts it with "hey bestie..." and honestly, they're both just touched Nico called them "bestie" at all)

He adores Studio Ghibli movies and can be found humming the Ponyo theme song anytime he goes swimming (Will standing on the shore, looking around for Nico and he eventually spots him in the water. He wades out to Nico, all sunglasses that shouldn't look so cool and golden hair and chest, and just greets him with "Hey there, Neeks, how's my fishie in the sea?" and Nico can't decide if he wants to drown himself or kiss Will on his stupid mouth)

Speaking of movies, shortly after the Giant War, all of his friends (the Seven, Reyna, Will, probably Lou Ellen and Cecil, too) showed up at his cabin with blankets and snacks. They each brought their favorite movie or movies they think he needs to see to catch him up on the modern age. At first, he acts disgruntled that they're all there but he very quickly settles into the blanket fort Annabeth constructs and is quietly very grateful and excited that they cared enough to do this for him. They're all holed up in his cabin for a full day until they've finished every movie. (Percy brought Finding Nemo, Annabeth brought Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Piper brought Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Jason brought Captain America: The First Avenger (and Nico definitely says "that's gay" when Steve and Bucky say there "Until the end of the line" shit and everybody absolutely loses their minds), Hazel also is behind on movies but she brought either a very scary movie or Moana, Frank brought A New Hope (though he considered Brother Bear), Will brought Spirited Away, Cecil brought Back to the Future, and Lou Ellen brought The Princess Bride)

He can play the piano! He gets a piano for the Hades cabin and on nights where he can't sleep and the nightmares are really bad, he plays piano.

He will cry if he hears I Will by Mitski or Wasteland, Baby by Hozier, for different reasons but also kind of not (he wants to be loved)

Also, Nico and Dionysus being buddies! Nico jokingly says he'll host a bacchanal if Dionysus excuses him from certain camp activities and that's how Nico and friends end up wearing togas around a campfire, all very hesitantly holding cups of wine they aren't actually going to drink. It is definitely not a bacchanal, it's just a bad toga party (barely) but Dionysus accepts it and decides Nico is a Good One.

In the months leading up to VidCon, some fans on the internet made a few discoveries: first of all, that the inside of Link’s house is painted green. This is a big deal because all of his videos are filmed outside either in his backyard or on trips that he and the brosquad go on to do…whatever bros do. explosions. idk. The point is he had some announcement about VidCon and filmed it inside. Only the wall and a potted plant were shown.

However, the colour was similar to the the shade of Zelda’s living room. Fans dug through years and years of old videos and found a clip of Zelda walking through a hallway, where there was an open door and a glimpse of a houseplant.

There were 2 types of responses to the theory:

“They could just be roommates guys calm down”

“and they were ROOMMATES?”

others pointed out that Link could just not have a house and had to crash in Zelda’s

Some guy on reddit claimed he had a botany degree and declared that the houseplants in the clips were not of the same genus. Normal people pointed out that the plant would have grown 4 years between the clips and would look considerably different.

#Zelink trended on twitter for a while and people posted other old clips from both of their channels and the frog video blew up again

Impa retweeted a post tagged as #zelink with “rofl” and later publicly apologized for causing confusion.

Fans noticed that in the “can a motorcycle drive over my arm” (it was clickbait he’s fine) episode 2 years ago, Link was eating out of a paper lunch bag with his name written on it in handwriting that a few people claimed to look like Zelda’s, leading people to believe that she had packed him a lunch.

However, this theory was shot down with the counterargument that Zelda can’t cook. although. i mean how much skill do you need to make a sandwich.

No one knows what tumblr is doing at this time

Zelda wore a scarf in her “Save the Sand Seals” video that matched identically to the scarf Link wore when he travelled to Hebra to film a shield surfing video, but it’s been debated wether it’s actually the same scarf or not.

Neither Zelda nor Link has spoken up about the theories, and besides Impa’s one slip on twitter, neither has any of their friends. Zelda received a lot of backlash for the assumption that she was dating Link because he has a lot of delusional fans that didn’t want her to “steal their man” or whatever the hell that type of fan would get mad about

after that whole mess, everyone was even more anticipant of VidCon in the hopes that some of their questions would be answered.

The whole batch went to VidCon this year: Link, Impa, Daruk, and Riju are a gang while Sidon and Mipha go together and Zelda & Revali each go separately. Urbosa is there for supervision moral support

Zelda has always been much better at dodging questions that she doesn’t want to answer than anyone else, so her Q&A went without a hitch. When asked to confirm the rumours she said “which one?” and then moved on to the next question (without actually confirming any rumours).

Link is generally a more awkward person but eventually said that he had filmed the video in Zelda’s house because it was nicer and didn’t realize it would cause such an uproar. Fans were disappointed, but Bolson claimed he saw Link and Zelda exiting the hotel elevator on the same floor after Link’s Q&A session. No one believed him.

Fans went back to theorizing over who Link, Zelda, and Sidon were all dating, because apparently they can’t just be dating unknown people and have to be with other YouTubers

Sidon and Bazz got engaged about a week after VidCon, making at least 4 preteen girls cry

Sidon x Sidon made a brief comeback but Sidon spoke up about his fandom for the first time ever on twitter and told everyone that no, he was not dating himself. eventually, everyone settled down and accepted that none of them were in a relationship save for a few loud fans.

Link and Zelda still got the occasional “when will you tell us who you’re dating?” comment but most of them were joking and the people who still hardcore shipped them were generally frowned upon. Zelda’s popularity went up after VidCon and she regained the 200k subscribers she’d lost after the first theory dropped.

Two months after VidCon, Link posted a video titled “Zelda and I’s House Tour!” and gave around 45 million people a heart attack

as revealed in the video, they had actually been dating since they were 16 and everyone’s just a fool.

Emily didn’t know what to do. 

Now that the team knew about her past and the man that had been hunting her for years was six feet under, it was the first time in a year that she felt like she was actually alive since they buried that empty casket. 

Since she met you. 

Emily remembered the night the two of you met. It was in a bar not far from the FBI building. She had just gotten back from a rough case and didn’t want to go home yet so she found herself in the smoky bar one night, the weight of the world on her shoulders. 

“You look like a whiskey drinker.” Emily hears, her head snaps up to see the most gorgeous woman she’d ever seen cleaning a glass behind the bar. She was in a semi-lowcut black shirt with her hair tied up in a tight high ponytail. Her makeup was light except for the bold wine red lip she dawned.  

“How’d you know?” Emily smiles, flirtatiously. 

The girl laughed gesturing at her uniform. “Kind of my job to. Don’t worry hon, I’ll take care of you.” 

Emily smiles watching the girl mix a drink before setting it in front of her. Emily raises an eyebrow at the mysterious woman. “What if I don’t like it.”  

“Well, if you don’t, the next one‘s on me.” She smiles. “But you will.” 

“You seem confident in your skills.” Emily says, taking a sip of the freshly made drink. It was perfect. “Fuck, that’s good.” 

“Well, at least it’s earned confidence.” The woman smiles, before turning to clean the dishes she made. Emily would be lying if she said she didn’t indulge herself and checked out the woman behind the bar. Soon, a rambunctious man is loudly entering the bar. Emily watches the girl turn towards the noise and instantly roll her eyes before regarding the man as he sits down at the bar, a few seats from Emily. 

“How’re you doing tonight, Y/N?” 

“Still gay, John. What can I get you?” 

“Your number.” 

“I’d rather chew glass. Can I get you something that pertains to my job?” 

“Oh come on, Y/N.” John says leaning into the woman whose name Emily just learned’s space across the bar. Emily watched her lean back uncomfortably away from the man. “Give me one chance, I’m sure I could turn you around.” 

Before Emily can stop herself she’s intervening. “Hey Kid, she’s obviously not interested so if you’re not going to order a drink, get lost.” 

The man angrily turns toward Emily. “Yea, and what’re you gonna do about it, Bitch?” He spits at her. 

Emily wordlessly takes out her FBI badge flashing it at the man. “Well, by the looks of it, you’re threatening a federal agent. So...Do you want to find out?” 

John grumbles obscenities as he exits the bar. The woman turns towards Emily. 

“Thank you but I had that handled.” She smirks. 

“I don’t doubt for a second you didn’t.” Emily smiles back. “He was just disturbing my drink. I’m Emily, by the way.” Emily says extending her hand. 

“Y/N.” You smile, shaking her hand back. 

That night felt like a blur. You talked about everything, nothing. Her life, your life, her job, your job. Time seemed to just float by and soon it was closing time. Emily watches as you shut the bar down for the night and waits while you lock the final doors. You guys still talk as she walks you to your car. 

“This was fun. Thank you for talking to me tonight.” Emily says. “It really helped me take my mind off things.”  

“No problem.” You say. “Just come back to see me.” 

Emily nods and you watch her walk off. She doesn’t get more than 6 feet before you yell out. 

“Hey!” Emily turns at the noise. “I-uh, I don’t typically do this but I have a really good bottle of whisky I haven't opened yet at my place, if you want to…” You trail off hoping she’ll take the hint. 

“I’ll follow you.” Emily smiles. 

That night was the first night in her natural life that Emily felt she was exactly where she was supposed to be. Sitting on the couch while drinking Y/N’s good whisky while she told Emily almost everything about herself. Y/N’s presence was so warm and her smile bright it wasn’t long before Emily was leaning in to kiss her. 

You kiss her back, obviously. It was what you’d been thinking about doing since the brunette woman walked into your bar. Her manicured hands framed your face as she leaned more into your space. Your hands circled her waist and pulled her towards you on the small couch, inciting a small, surprised moan from the woman in front of you. You weren’t typically like this. You didn’t have sex the first time meeting someone but there was something so eclectic about the woman in front of you now that every bone in your body burned to have her with you. Temporarily or not. You stood wordlessly, slipping your hand into hers before leading her to your bedroom. 

Emily had almost thought you were too good to be true. She had done so many bad things in this life, things she regretted, things no one knew about her. That the fact she had this perfect woman under her with wine red lips slack, her splayed under her like a halo as she moaned, back arching off the bed. There was no other way to describe the woman other than divinity brought to earth that Emily simply did not deserve. Especially in the way she held her afterwards. Like Emily was also precious and deserved care. It was then she realized that as much as she liked Y/N, Y/N deserved more. So when the early morning came, she left. 

Not long after that, She was kidnapped by Doyle, then presumed dead, then legally dead for a year before coming back to finish the war she had started with him long ago and she had won. And while that had been satisfying, to finally be back with her found family and the man that plagued her in the grave yet she still felt… dead. 

So she found herself outside the doors of the last place she felt alive. 

Emily sees you the second she enters the bar. Your back is turned toward the door as you were grabbing a drink behind you. Your eyes widened when you turned and saw her. Emily couldn’t help the small smile that played on her lips when she saw you. Your hair was shorter but you still looked the same to Emily, absolutely ethereal. 

You raise your eyebrows at Emily as she sits down at your bar but you place a coaster in front of her anyway. You stare at her with a waiting expression, a silent ‘what do you want?’ 

“Whisky.” She says, after that second. “Please.” 

You hum. Emily watches you angrily make the drink before all but slamming it on the coaster in front of her. Emily takes a sip of the drink as you watch with angry eyes, arms crossed defensively over your chest. 

“I understand that you’re mad--” 

 “You left, didn’t say goodbye or leave a note or anything. Then you appear back at my job more than a year later. I thought you were dead!” 

“Would you believe me if I told you I was?” Emily says, grimacing slightly at the harshness of your words. “I told you about my job last time, something happened where I had to leave the country for a while and I couldn’t contact anyon--”  

“You don’t owe me any kind of explanation.” You cut her off. “If I was a one night stand, fine I can deal with that, I’m a big girl. But don’t come back thinking you can spout outrageous lies at me to get some play-” 

“Woah! That’s not what I’m doing at all.” Emily exclaims. “I came back because… I don’t know, I just got back and everything has been weird and doesn’t feel right and you were the very last thing that’s felt right to me.” Emily says. She watches your expression soften but you don't uncross your arms. “And you were not just a one night stand to me, you know that right? You were always more than a one night stand to me. I was always going to come back to you. I wish my timing was better and I wish it hadn’t taken me this long but if you’re still available, I want to take you on a date. A proper one… if you’ll have me.” 

Emily watched you tap your foot on the floor, looking to the sky like you were having your own inner conflict with yourself. You uncross your arms before sighing. 

“It’s not that easy, I’m not that easy.” You say. 

“I know.” Emily agrees, crestfallen. She’d lost her chance at you on her own, she couldn’t be mad at anyone but herself. 

“And you’re going to have to make it up to me.” You say. Emily’s head pops back up, looking at you hopefully. You blow a breath before pulling a piece of paper and a pen from behind the bar and hastily scrawling 10 digits on it and slamming it into Emily’s hand. “Fridays are my nights off. So do with that information what you will.” You say before walking away to attend to the other patrons of your bar. 

“I will.” you hear, softly behind you.

music recommendations because i have some thoughts™

i don't wanna be that person who's like "my music taste is so weird lol" but i find that very often most of my friends don't really care for the music i like so i thought i'd just make a long ass post about it on tumblr instead. Fair warning, I'm very passionate about MIKA and The Mechanisms and so this very quickly got VERY long because it is part of my ongoing campaign to convince people to listen to mika and the mechs.

1) MIKA in general, but especially My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019) and No Place In Heaven (2015) (especially the Deluxe version!!)

MIKA is a kind of British singer (half Lebanese, grew up in France blabla), and you probably know him for Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy from his first album Life In Cartoon Motion from 2007. He writes a lot of FUN music, interspersed with the occasional slightly sadder song, especially when looking at an album like No Place In Heaven, which contains a lot of songs with gay themes, resulting in some songs that are just a little bit ouch. He's originally classically trained and has a frankly RIDICULOUS range and idk he just writes very good pop music. Also I have so much respect for that time he talked about how a lot of pop is very fake, with like expensive cars and stilettos and mini skirts in the snow and said "Because I walk down the street, and I don't see any of that. I see fat women and gay men. I don't know... That's real". He's written 5 albums; My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019), No Place In Heaven (2015), The Origin Of Love (2012), The Boy Who Knew Too Much (2009), and Life In Cartoon Motion (2007).

For starters, I recommend listening to Last Party, Origin Of Love, Grace Kelly, Blame It On The Girls, Blue, Happy Ending, Pick Up Off The Floor, Last Party, Underwater, Tomorrow and Tiny Love (yes this is a long list but i REALLY love MIKA). If you want a slightly broader palette that's not just my favourites, I recommend the Mika starter pack on spotify.

2) The Mechanisms. I warn you. I am making this a thing. I have been obsessed with the mechs since last march.

Boy, where to start? The Mechanisms were a British 9 member space pirate story-telling cabaret that "died" in January 2020. They rewrite songs to fit retellings of various stories. I don't even know what genre I'd describe them as, but probably folk but steam-punk?? Their 4 "main" albums are concept albums, and I honestly just recommend listening to the from beginning to end in chronological order. A good way to get into the mechs is also to listen to UDAD and then watching the live show on youtube or alternately try giving Death To The Mechanisms a listen, to get good quality live show audio of TBI and various other stuff. Also, it was streamed on YouTube and someone combined the footage with the album audio and it rocks. Really, I think the mechs' best selling points are honestly just their concept albums:

Once Upon a Time (In Space) Their first album from 2012. I'd say this is the most "easily digestible" for the general public, since it's a retelling of various fairytales. So, what if Old King Cole was in fact not merry, but rather a cold-blooded dictator, intent on colonising as much of the galaxy as possible. What if Snow White was a general, looking to avenge what King Cole did to her sister, Rose. What if Cinderella was to be wedded to Rose the day that King Cole attacked in order to kidnap Rose? But y'know, In Space and also like every other mechs album it's a beautiful tragedy. Fave songs are Old King Cole, Pump Shanty, and No Happy Ending.

Ulysses Dies at Dawn You guessed it, it's a story about Odysseus, or Ulysses because I guess Ulysses is easier to rhyme or fit in the meter or something, idk. Ulysses is a war hero of unknown gender who is said to keep something that could take down the corrupt Olympians, meanest families in the City, in a vault to which only they know the passcode. Oedipus, Heracles, Orpheus, and Ariadne have been hired by Hades, who happens to be The Mechs' quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, to get into Ulysses' vault. I didn't care much for udad at first, but honestly it's got some real bangers and the story is really good. UDAD weirdly stands out as the only of the concept albums to not feature any gay relationships, per se. Fave songs are Riddle of the Sphinx, Favoured Son, and Underworld Blues.

High Noon over Camelot This is my favourite mehcs album. So basically, this is Arthurian legend, but it's a space western and Jonny D'Ville does a bad southern accent. This is the story of the cowboy lovers Arther, Lancelot, and Guinevere searching for the Galfridian Restricted Acces Interface Login, or GRAIL, in order to stop their world from falling into the sun. Meanwhile, Mordred and Gawaine are ruling Camelot, and Mordred has convinced Gawaine to try to establish peace with the Saxons by whom Mordred was raised, but Gawaine hates viciously. If you love getting your heart broken and songs by a fucking off the rails batshit preacher I HIGHLY recommend hnoc. Fave songs are Gunfight at the Dolorous Guard, Blood and Whiskey, and Once and Future King. Honorary mention for Hellfire because it awakens something animalistic in me.

The Bifrost Incident TBI is the frankly only good adaptation of norse mythology I've ever known of, and I say that as Dane who was literally forced to learn things about norse mythology in school because it's my heritage or whatever. I've been listening to TBI a lot lately because it's VERY good. It's definitely the most refined of the mechs' albums (because it's the newest) but also I just love a little bit of cosmic horror. 80 years ago, Odin, the All-Mother, ruler of Asgaard, launched a train through the wormhole Bifrost that would reduce the travel between Asgaard and Midgaard from 3 months to 3 days, but things didn't go quite as planned. Lyfrassir Edda of the New Midgaard Transport Police is trying to solve the case of why suddenly the train has arrived 80 years late; to figure out whether it was accident or maybe it was sabotaged by Loki, who was allegedly sentence to death her murder of Baldur, by the Midgaardian resistance led by Loki's wife Sigyn, or maybe by Thor, who was to take over after Odin, and who holds quite the grudge because he used to be a friend of Loki's. You might've heard the song Thor from this album, it's apparently quite popular. Fave songs are Loki, Ragnarok III: Strange Meeting, and Ragnarok V: End of The Line. Yet again an honorary mention: Red Signal because while Lovecraft was a bitch, his invocations are fucking RAW.

Basically, the Mechanisms do all of their performances in character as captain first mate Jonny D'Ville, quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, pilot DrumBot Brian, master-at-arms Gunpowder Tim, science officer Raphaella la Cognizi, doctor Baron Marius Von Raum (neither a baron, nor a doctor), archivist Ivy Alexandria, engineer Nastya Rasputina, and The Toy Soldier, who is, as usual, present. You can find very obscure lore about the crew of the Aurora here, tidbits on Tales To Be Told and TTBT Vol. 2, such as One Eyed Jacks, The Ignominious Demise of Dr. Pilchard, Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser, Lucky Sevens, and Lost in the Cosmos.

If you feel like listening to a full 40-50 minute album to find out if you like a band is a bit much, I recommend listening to one of the mini stories Alice, Swan Song, or Frankenstein, which are about 12, 5 and 9:30 minutes respectively.

3) The Amazing Devil You know that guy who played Jaskier in the Witcher? I got into The Amazing Devil from spotify recommending them because I listened to the mechs, and apparently Joey Batey from The Amazing Devil is the same Joey Batey who was in the Witcher. Both him and Madeleine Hyland are VERY talented singers and songwriters and their second album The Horror and the Wild makes me go out into the forest and SCREAM. I listened to it on repeat for like a month straight. I guess they'd also be considered folk, but like. New Folk. Also yes, this is another British artist, I don't know why I'm like this. I've never really gotten that into their first album, Love Run, but King slaps. As I understand there's this whole lore about the Blue Furious Boy and Scarlet Scarlet, Joey and Madeleine respectively, but unlike the Mechanisms it's actually possible to find out things about the actual real people and harder to find the obscure lore? I'm open for people to please help me. Fave songs are The Horror and the Wild, Farewell Wanderlust, and That Unwanted Animal, which is literally a third of their second album, but again. I haven't really listened to Love Run that much, and I just LOVE the harmonies on THATW. (also im gay and dramatic leave me alone)

4) dodie I have so much love for this woman. Like many others, I first knew dodie as doddleoddle on youtube. I think I first stumbled across her in probably 2015, because I distinctly already knew her before she released her first EP Sick of Losing Soulmates in 2016. I think I watched probably every video she's ever made in the span of a few weeks. I just loved her quiet sound and was absolutely HOOKED. Also she's actually the reason I got into MIKA originally, so thanks for that. Dodie just realeased her first album Build A Problem (in addition to her three EP's; the one mentioned above, You, and Human) and it slaps. Yes dodie is also British Fave songs are probably Monster, Rainbow, and In The Middle.

5) Cladia Boleyn Unfortunately, Claudia Boleyn only has three singles and that's it. She's been making content on youtube for quite a while, and that's how I first discovered her. I don't know what genre her music is, but I like it. The songs are Celesta, George, and Mother Maiden Crone, of which the latter is my favourite. I'm not saying Claudia Boleyn invented women in 2017 when she released Mother Maiden Crone, but she did. Also you guessed it, Claudia Boleyn is British.

6) Hozier I'm not about to tell you about Hozier. You know who he is. Listen to Nina Cried Power, Angel Of Small Death & The Codeine Scene, and Shrike. Also Hozier isn't stricly British in that he is definitely from A British Isle, but Ireland is not part of the UK. Give me a break.

7) Oh Land Oh Land IS DANISH. I like her early music best, because I'm not that into the electronic sound. I guess Oh Land is just you regular old pop, but with the occasional weird vibe? Oddly enough, I like her first album Fauna best. Unfortunately I haven't really listened to her newest album Family Tree much, but it seems good? Fave songs are Frostbite, Love You Better and Family Tree. I cried on the bus, first time I listened to the Danish version of Love You Better, Elsker Dig Mer because my mother tongue always just hits harder. Also Frostbite is Oh Land doing a duet with herself which is pretty cool.

8) Oysterband This is a live recommendation. I mean they're a decent folk band and all, but they're a fucking experience live. If you like folk and you ever get the opportunity to see Oysterband live, do it. Unfortunately, yes. They are British. Either way, they are incredible on a scene and I think they deserve a mention for that.

9) Ben Platt Honestly don't know much about this guy, but he's not British and he was in Dear Evan Hansen. He released an album in 2019, Sing To Me Instead, and I just think it's a good album, there isn't really not much more to it. Fave songs are Grow As We Go, Bad Habit, and In Case You Don't Live Forever.

Yue does eventually get him into some oldies. his favorite song released before he was born is I’m So Excited by the Pointer Sisters. 

Haru’s favorite movie is Birds of Prey (2020) and he’s correct

generally, he likes movies and the experience of going to the movie theater a lot. his favorite genres of film are those snobby Oscar bait movies, mystery, and thriller. some other movies he enjoys are Lady Bird, Sorry to Bother You, Little Women, Brooklyn, Parasite, Moonlight, and Knives Out. 

everybody thinks that he’s going to like musicals because he’s obsessed with music and obsessed with movies, but he hates them. So much. he’s really just not good at suspending his disbelief when it comes to people breaking into song. the only musicals he’s ever enjoyed are Cabaret, noted “musical for people who hate musicals” and even that he wasn’t too fond of, and Fame, for reasons explained below.   

Suki gets him into ‘80s movies, specifically Molly Ringwald movies and Fame, against his will. everybody’s confused because Fame is technically a musical and yet Haru loves it. Jet thinks Suki must have cast a spell on him or something. 

Haru’s mom is a v crafty person, and she belongs to a lot of knitting and crocheting clubs and guilds, etc, and thus she’s made him a whole lot of unfashionable, itchy sweaters over the years. he loves her, obviously, but he hates the sweaters. 

when he meets Aang, he’s very weirded out by how much they love crafts, but he quickly learns that Aang has a killer sense of style, and eventually asks him to make him a cool looking shawl. Aang does, Haru wears the shawl everywhere, and they become best friends. 

Haru eventually meets his mom in the middle and knits her a hat. It looks awful but she wears it everywhere anyway. 

Haru hates rollercoasters. A Lot. However, before he and Jet started dating, they would go to amusement parks a lot, and Jet, thrill-seeker that he is, would find the scariest rollercoaster there and try to get Haru to go with him. He jokingly promised Haru that he’d hold his hand the entire time, and Haru jumped onto that promise. 

From then on, Haru would go on scary rollercoasters with Jet so often that Jet thought he was turning a corner. However, when they finally start dating and Haru can hold Jet’s hand whenever he feels like it, he stops going on rollercoasters for good

Jet’s initially upset about this, but then Haru wins him a teddy bear at the arcade and he lets it go.

Naturally, when he was young he’d have a phase for Harry Potter, only the books though, and as he got older he’d re-read them and laugh at the magical inconsistencies.

TAZ. He probably simped at some point for Taako. Perhaps just dnd in general, and he either played a Magick user of some kind or a bard depending on his level of intoxication.

*inhales* PERCY JACKSON. that's it that's the point. He even got the unfulfilling Best Years Of Your Life Depression(tm) from reading exciting, romanticised accounts of teenagehood, only for it to not live up because how could it? its chill though, he finds his own little ways to be adventurous like making pasta in the late dead of night/early void hours of the morning, and eating on the floor. Faust helps him. 

Listens to sleeping at last just to feel again and Saturn is his favourite and he will dance sensually and soulfully to it, somehow.

He watches Midnight gospel because he just loves the concept of podcasts but can sometimes struggle listening when its just audio bc he will vibe himself into a mediative state and have no idea what half the episode was about, so the visuals ironically keep him pretty grounded while he watches it. (He does meditate afterwards, though)

Julian: 

This man DID have a fnaf phase and he IS the MAN behind THE SLAUGHTER. (He also gets a kick outta die in a fire (obviously) but it sends him absolutely, irrevocably feral)

He 100% had an emo phase too, but in a gay way that slowly transitioned into a weird taste for aspects of cottage core but like a Seaside cottage, and jams it to bear ghost now. 

I bet he also got into true crime and has many pieces of paraphernalia with the slogan “Be GAY Do CRIME”. He also knows waaaay too much about how to dispose of bodies from that one reddit thread and worries everyone by bringing it up just a little bit too often. Also! out of morbid curiosity, he's the kinda bitch that would watch autopsy videos at 3:27am and is subscribed to ask a mortician and definitely participates in vulture culture.

Ngl he probably also got roped into a SuperWhoLock phase by Asra and it just added to his trust issues and permanently damaged his Gaydar.

She probably has liked something and tried desperately to hide it from her elder sisters, only for them to get into it too. she’d be alright about it at first, but when Nasmira starts getting way more likes on her fandom content, Nadia starts feeling a bit put down and quits the fandom. 

She’s is or has been at some point been knee deep in showtunes. She liked Hamilton but isn't quite trash for it, but will wipe the floor with your ass if Dead Girl Walking comes on.

Probably had a ‘not like other girls phase’ but instead of giving her a weird, kinda toxic relationship with womanhood, she got over it and accepts her femininity and will defend within an inch of her life women's rights and choices. 

She's a proud Barb and would absolutely let Doja cat step on her. She hypes up girls on their OnlyFans and will actively murder people who tries to disrespect sex workers, as she too, respects the grind. 

Also likes Greek and Egytian mythology, and stans Medusa as a victim of Men aint being shit. She also can't decide whether she stans Persephone or Aphrodite more and it is a constant ongoing debate in her head. She probably supports Lore Olympus on patreon.

Lucio:

MLP but he wouldn't ever admit it, and protects Fluttershy from creeps with his liFE. he also actually felt pretty bad for Discord, and kinda related to him. (Legend has it that on cursed, cursed nights of solitude, you can hear the sounds of DiSCOrddd iM hOWLin’ aT ThE MooN~~ drift in the air, accompanied by an actually really good rendition of the lyrics).

Lucio also liked heathers and he and Nadia bond over belting it out together, but his favourite is candy store (but will occasionally bop it to Big Fun).

His experience of Gay Culture was just binge watching drag race while he was still trying to accept his mlm-ness, and gatekeeped it until he learnt eventually how its supposed to be a place of tolerance and support and will now actively encourage All drag monarchs to work it. (He realises belatedly why it felt kinda wrong when RuPaul/the show did the queens dirty and the lack of diverse identites etc). He’s a little off with some things but with a little guidance from a very hesitant Asra, he's slowly getting Woke. (Neither will admit that they bond over these little lessons by the end of it, but everyone knows it and wish they’d just chill abt it)

Got into Buzzfeed Unsolved and is mildly ashamed of himself but he finds Shane and Ryans dynamic really funny so he keeps watching it anyways. For some ~~mysterious~~ reason, he has had mad respect for Shane after the Goatman’s bridge episode, and immediately went to send it to everyone else, but got scared. 

He likes to watch documentaries on cryptids (sometimes with Asra, or with Julian depending on how creepy the cryptid is)

His life was changed on the fateful day of 11/11/11. He has the highest logged hours on steam out of everyone ever and ProtectOrcs2020 could basically be his tagline at this point. He always adopts the kids and makes them the Best House with the hearthfire DLC. He always goes with the stormcloaks and probably simps for at least 5 of the companions.

He got into the Witcher through the Netflix series and started out being a Geralt stan, but jaskier slowly snook his way into his heart and he highkey ships them and Siri IS their child. (he would convince Nadia to cosplay as Yennefer, if he had more confidence).

She liked dan and Phil but wasn't creepy abt it. She swore she could never pick a side but she secretly enjoyed Phil’s content more bc existentialism gives her anxiety. She did ship them but has since learnt quick that irl people ships aren't cute. She probably stays Thomas Sanders too

IF you're looking for a bitch with the nicest island on animal crossing, portia is 100% your bitch. She has Lillies of the valley for days and absolutely died when the special edition AC switch sold out before she could buy one, and compensates by copious amounts of Isabelle and the able sister stickers. Her favourite villagers are Fauna, Goldie, and Nate. 

Portia is also a queen of Stardew and often passes out before she can get to bed because she just wants to get ON with her beautiful FarM dammit! She can never make her mind up what villager she wants to romance and switches faves like every week.
