My Favorite BL Dramas of 2023

happy new year to everyone who uses the gregorian calendar. we had so much good content come out this year. i'm gonna list my favs. please remember these are my personal faves and may be objectively terrible. do not be alarmed.

My Beautiful Man S2 and Movie

If you ask me this series is one of the best bls of all time. idc idc. im a hira and kiyoi girlie through and through. how many bl's do you know with 2 seasons and an original movie. not those repackaged ones that they try to hand feed us. an actual movie with a plot???? the bar is on the floor clearly. but hira and kiyoi are gonna surpass that bar every. single. time.

Love Tractor

I didn't hear enough people screaming about Love Tractor. crickets tbh. Which is blasphemous in my opinion. How could you be quiet when this lovely bumbling himbo with the dopiest grin is on your screen? look at him!!

Eighth Sense

10's across the board. No question. No notes.

Now...I'm not a huge kbl person. However, this was really nice. Had a solid plot. I don't remember much abt it but I know there was pottery and I had a good time

Only Friends

This was culture. This was a movement. I will never forgive them for how they treated Boston. Even still, I was there every week ready for the chaos. I had the time of my life.

Bed Friend

It's hard to believe this came out this year. Like ??? But really that shows how much I've established this show as a classic in my mind. BED FRIEND? UEA? baddest bitch in the land?? KING? greenest flag out there???? (debatable but for the sake of my argument lets pretend). It had every element. good plot, great visuals, a little heat. like come on who else is doing it like them?

i just know if me and uea were ever in the same room he would judge me so much

Dangerous Romance

I've seen mixed reviews on this one but I had a fun time. Kanghan is a prissy little spoiled brat, but he's my prissy little spoiled brat. I loved their story progression. Which is saying a lot for me bc I don't like enemies to lovers. like why are we fighting? also "i'm an introvert" is the funniest shit i've heard all year.

La Pluie

this was so shockingly good i wish it got more attention. iqiyi in general really did their big one this year. when it rains you can only hear your soulmate? love!

Laws of Attraction

this was a rollercoaster. i started watching ironically because i thought it would be terrible when i saw the mc go super saiyan. that shit is still hilarious idc.

Love Syndrome III

Now before we start throwing tomatoes...let's hear me out. Nothing has caught my attention this year the way this series did. This was another series I was watching ironically until suddenly i wasn't. It's also just so funny that they released the third one without dropping a first or second. but bad bitches don't need to explain themselves. and YES love syndrome is a bad bitch. let's stop acting like we watch bl's solely for the quality. i don't need marvel cgi to have a good time. sometimes a dollar store wig and the most toxic couple you've ever seen is enough to make some shit shake. if this was released during the tharntype era??? oh bitches would've ate it up. HAPPILY. rant over.

Last Twilight

it's good man. what more can i say? i hope it doesn't disappoint me in the end.

Pit Babe

i'm very pleased. very much so. i know alot of folks went into this show expecting a little teehee. to laugh at the omegaverse racecar show. NOT ME. i've waited for this moment. and anyone who's seen me screaming in the tag can attest. this is a game changer. not just for bl but the fandom community at large. and don't even get me started on their chemistry. babe's smile whenever he's around charlie?? mama and papa?? MAMA AND FUCKING PAPA?? we deserve this and i will bask in it for as long as I can. jeff had better be pregnant by the end of the show.

I need advice, please, you never answer my asks, even though you do with tkkrs spewing lies and hate. Please, I used to love every Jikook interaction, but since a while ago, I can't do it without thinking about how 99% of the fandom are tkkrs and hate JM. I want to enjoy their moments like you do, but it hurts so much to see all the hate JM receives. Sometimes I wonder if JK is worth it...like JM would be free if he dated someone else...tkkrs only want JK to be TH's sex toy, and if JM is with someone else, at least we could enjoy Jikook even if it's them just being friends. Or JK could shut tkkrs up sometime and try to defend Jimin...I gave up on TH confirming Jennie, he's a coward and doesn't want to lose his fans (tkkrs), so he's going to keep doing fanservice namedropping JK everytime he needs it... please, what is your secret? how can I enjoy jkk again? why are there so many people that believe JK is TH's boyfriend if JM is the one he loves? really, everything is so frustrating. That being said, anon pointed out how I have time to reply to antis n tkkrs. I'm sure some of u who have sent me good Jikook asks probably wonder the same thing. Why does she reply to them but hasn't answered my ask from months ago? This is a fair question. Apart from my current situation 🤰🏽 I may not have time sometimes. And some of your asks require research. Some of your asks are so good they deserve time and thought put into them. Meanwhile insulting a piece of vermin or an anti is easy. I don't have to think when talking smack to these assholes. I don't need to research anything. Plus its very satisfying and takes 0 effort on my end. So that's why it seems like I prioritise them.

Answering a good ask and answering it properly, could take all day sometimes. As much as I love doing it, it requires a lot of time and effort. So yeah, incase any of u was frustrated about how u sent a good ask a long time ago and yet I seem to have time for antis, thats why. That, and people who send links. Those asks are easy n take no time at all.

But anon, u asked for advice on how to enjoy Jikook moments despite the existence of tkkrs.

I will start by taking you back to this post I made when all hell broke loose that one time. It is incredibly important that people remember: your feelings are not Jimin's. This is the man who in 2018 was sent a death threat and he said that Armys were more worried about this person than he was. That he was alright and that no one should worry.

Quickly, lets pay attention to this part one more time

His fans were more concerned than he was. I do believe this to be the case 1000% right now too. You are more worried about the vermin than he is. You are more worried about Jikook antis, than he is. He doesn't care. If he cared he would pull away from JK. If he cared we wouldn't be getting a Jikook documentary. If he cared why would be continue providing Jikook content despite knowing some people will not receive it very well??? Despite knowing there are people who wanna kill him for hanging with JK?

If he cared we would be starved for moments on official content. He would keep away from JK if antis were affecting him. Period. There is no "poor Jimin." He's more than okay.

Anon, my advice is to keep this in mind. This is what I do. Jimin doesn't care, so neither do I.

So instead I laugh at them and mock them because they are just wasting their time and energy. No amount of hate and death threats are gonna stop Jimin from loving those he loves. And this is the truth.

Plus, why be concerned with people who believe members hate each other? Like in what world does that make sense?? Anon, you have seen the fuckery i share on this blog. These people are brainless and stupid. As we speak they claim that wasn't JK with Jimin in Tokyo. How can u take such people seriously??? I know I don't. I can't. So my advice, this is up to you and you only. Its is up to u to treat these people like the mental cases they are; by not taking them seriously. Report, block and move on. Go watch a happy Jimin compilation or something. If u can't take the hate, then unfollow all report pages, mute key words, stay on the clean side of twitter. Believe u me, it exists. Curate your timeline anon, it is possible. Even on twitter.

I promise you Jimin does not care. He used to but he sure as hell doesn't anymore. You remember this crucial part, and you will be able to enjoy Jikook in peace.

Plus, if you've been paying attention to JK, you will notice he doesn't feed tkkrs. He really doesn't. Not like in the past. And the dude has made it clear he doesn't like them... not even a little bit. And can u blame him? Look at you and how u feel. Now imagine JK, Jimin's boyfriend seeing this hate. Imagine how he feels. You can tell he ain't about tkkrs. Especially this year. Even they know it and so they rely on V for tkk content. (Denying them moments is the most JK can do. Interfering or trying to shut them up wouldn't work. If it didn't work with V, twice, it won't work with JK either)

This is the only advice I can give u. Hope u heed it. Because no one deserves their BTS experience taken away from them. Xoxo

Everything about him screams generic. Generic hair generic face generic eyes (dare I say: generic name). Multiple times in the story he tried to pass himself off as one of his (much handsome-r) companions and everyone is like. Hmmmm I'm not too sure about that. I've heard he's a lot more handsome and you're kind of mid. There's practically a running gag wherein his closest companions say something like "wow kdj has anyone ever told you that you're ugly"

Chapter one he tells us that he’s an ordinary salary worker with no friends whose most interesting hobby is reading webnovels on the subway. This hobby proves to be useful thanks to the entire plot of the story but there is a running gag that people think he looks mid or can’t remember what he looks like at all

Propaganda:

"Hi my name is Kim Dokja :) no there isn't anything weird or off-putting about me :) I am a perfectly normal man :)" <- real quote from Kim Dokja seconds before doing something weird and off-putting Jokes aside he is. Very very generic. It's an actual element in the plot that he's generic. He also keeps trying to convince everyone else he's just some normal dude but he's NOT and they DO NOT BELIEVE HIM He also keeps trying to pass himself off as his much more handsome companion and it only works because they've never seen him before (there's at least three paragraphs every time this happens of "hm no I heard YJH is really handsome. This guy is kind of ugly ngl")

Aside from ASF, what are some of your favorite extreme horror films?

This reminded me, I've actually been meaning to make an extreme horror film tier meme thing lol.

I actually talk about other extreme horror films very often, but I guess ASF becomes what you're known for when people don't understand the reason I watch extreme horror over Hollywood horror. The reason is because I WANT to be disturbed, horrified, and feel uncomfortable when consuming horror media. So with that said. I'm going to list some of my favs that I recommend as well for people who are interested in getting into extreme horror or have yet to see.

Warning SPOLERS

Irreversible is absolutely one of my top extreme horror films. It's an absolute masterpiece and I feel like it truly portrays the reality and trauma and effects of sexual assault. As a victim, I appreciate traumatic things like SA being portrayed realistically, because it's important for people to understand the full extent of the suffering a victim experiences.

Cannibal Holocaust, as stereotypical as that may sound to say, my reasons are probably deeper than one would expect. I appreciate the film because of the political commentary, how it essentially flips what one goes in expecting on its head by showing that the group of Americans who go to make the documentary are actually the true monsters. I also think it's very impressive (and rather rare) to find extreme horror that delivers such a kick to gut without using or heavily focusing on child abuse. I think Irreversible is great for the same reason. The kick to the gut is much more out of left field given how much child abuse is used as a trope.

Trauma (2017) [nicknamed A Chilean Film]. I went into this blind and OH LORD I WILL ADMIT I WAS CAUGHT OFF GUARD AND EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE MORE THAN ONCE. definitely lived up to the nickname it's been given. There's an endurance test scene that is Irreversible tier and the fact the girl puts the gun in her mouth after experiencing that (only to be shot by Juan instead), shows how truly horrifically SA affects victims. I also appreciate the fact that Juan's own trauma was shown in flashbacks, giving an explanation but not an excuse of how he ended up the way he did. The end scene smacked me like the hand of God. Its a movie that does a good job at showing the cycle of abuse.

Salo, I wouldn't say is one of my top extreme horror films, but I'd say it's a must watch at least once. The commentary on fascism being horrid... 🙏

Now, this last one I'm going to mention, is not extreme horror but by far the movie that has left me the most disturbed and to this day: Threads (1984) you will be left very, very, very numb and never quite the same: "You cannot win a nuclear war!" -Threads, before nuclear war.

On a final note, I also am looking forward to rewatching August Underground again soon, I haven't seen it in YEARS and it's recently been officially distributed by the AMAZING @unearthed-films !!!

On reflection, I suppose I did make that comment offhandedly without thinking that many people have no idea what I'm talking about- it concerns stuff I suppose falls into that "if you're in circles that know it seems obvious, if not you have no idea it exists" valley.

I should probably clarify that that post wasn't me talking about some imminent risk of AO3 as a platform imploding or disappearing or anything, and nobody needs to start panicking in that regard. I was referring to the current boiling over of a lot of very long term (like, back to when it was founded) institutional/structural/operational issues within the OTW as an org that have been coming out over the past week or so. So me looking at being less solely reliant on AO3 was more a matter of longterm "seems a good idea not to be on just this one platform having these issues" planning and not anything anyone needs to be worried about like, right now.

...and because I know folks not as familiar with this same longterm stuff WILL ask, I'll put a brief summary below the cut for if any of you are curious. However, please be aware, this discussion will by necessity include reference to an incident last year in which OTW volunteers were sent CSEM/CSAM materials as part of a horrendous targeted campaign; while nothing graphic regarding CSA itself is discussed, I mention it here for post filtering and general warning purposes.

So these past couple of months there has been a sustained fan organizing action going on under the name #endOTWracism, which is a specific, targeted attempt at pushing for the OTW to make good on promises they made in 2020 to look at improving their response to racism on their platform. There's an FAQ covering the scope of the action (which ended yesterday, and ran through May) here.

I've been following this with very great interest and it's brought a lot of really good focused discussion out in fan communities, bringing back up a lot of talking points which have historically been shouted down re: the OTW and its poor (one might say "nearly entirely negligent") response to racism in fandom over the span of its existence, and the long standing attempts to get them to address this.

Anyway, one of the posts I especially was recommended that looked at it from the perspective of someone with experience in volunteering and organizing was this post, which takes a look specifically at the issues of how the OTW is structured as an org in a practical, real-world sense. I think it's a great post that brings a really good, grounded approach to the whole issue, looking not just at the big ideas but at how to really run a functioning organisation in a way that is able to be e.g. antiracist. A post like that of course brought in a lot of discussion of... how the OTW is structured and functions day-to-day! That being the topic at hand, and folks wanting to bring their own experiences to the table.

Which, both on that post itself and elsewhere, has uh. Brought some stuff to light that makes even the most hardcore OTW skeptic look like maybe they were overly optimistic. To be quite honest

Some highlights:

Last year, there was a horrendous attack in which OTW volunteers were directly emailed and bombarded with high volumes of CSEM. This was of course horrifically traumatising and scary, and even at the time it was noted that the OTW's response to this was wildly negligent in terms of taking action to safeguard and help their volunteers. Well, it turns out that a) this was an escalation of preexisting issues that the OTW knew about and failed to reasonably address, b) they took a HIDEOUSLY unethical approach to how CSEM distribution attempts were moderated on the platform and just dumped it on one unsupported volunteer who was left horribly burned out by the experience. This post has a good summary and roundup. The fallout from this entire debacle is way too much for me to summarize in full but suffice to say: folks are thinking maybe people should consider not continuing to volunteer for an org that is this unethical and exploitative towards its workforce in a way that directly puts that at serious risk! This is a standpoint I would agree with given there's seemingly also been internal retaliation against the person speaking out! This is terrible! I feel so bad for all these poor volunteers! I have been reading about and fuming regards this situation for two days now and it truly is awful.

There has recently been an instance in which Chinese OTW volunteers got hung out to dry regards their specific work with OTW on Weibo, where it was made clear to them that the org really wasn't interested in any of the work they were doing to engage with and support specifically Chinese fandom. Basically, "we don't really think this is worth doing, and noone involved in the board etc even speaks Chinese, so whatever". This follows an observed and longstanding pattern of higher ups at the OTW undervaluing... basically anyone who isn't part of Western anglophone fandom.

In general, just a LOT of current and past OTW volunteers talking on various platforms about the sheer dysfunction that means things at OTW are deeply incapable of getting basic shit done at best and straight up chew well meaning volunteers up and spit them out at worst. This is basically the nth round of this exact cycle since the OTW began, but in conjunction with the above, it seems to be getting a lot more attention than such things usually do.

This is only some of the stuff that's going on right now but basically, every single issue of internal bullshit the OTW has been accruing as an org for the past ~15 years seems to be blowing up at once, and it's really the first time I've considered that this time it might, in the long run, have a serious impact on the viability of the org in the future. (As things stand: it absolutely should do, because any org that so comprehensively fails the human beings working for it in such an immediate, real life sense needs to make huge immediate changes or fuck right off tbh.)

So that's a bad summary of... SOME of the stuff going on right now. It's a lot. Needless to say.

I wanted to make this post for a couple reasons. One: many folks came into fandom well after the AO3 was just this... site that was there, used by default, and which just sort of operates and you don't think about how. Which is understandable. A person coming into fandom in a post-AO3 world will see the site the same way one sees Twitter or Tumblr or Wattpad; a thing too big and too... default to really concern yourself with the details of how it came to be so big, and used by default. I, personally, have been in online spaces since I was very young, and AO3 launched when I was around sixteen, many years into my experiences with the fandom spaces it came out of. I was around at the time that the OTW and AO3 were proposed, developed and began to expand in scope. I was in circles where folks were talking about this stuff in a very direct way, basically. So I think I have a decent enough sense of context to help lift that veil a little for folks who have no such advantage, and also to help highlight that these are issues years and years in the making, not sudden revelations as they sometimes seem.

Two, because I expect to see many, many folks trying to pass this off as "discourse" or "wank" or "purity culture" in the coming weeks as the fallout continues, and I want dig my ankles in and say if you try that shit on with me I will laugh you off my blog. I think this post makes my opinion fairly clear on where I draw the line between "dumb fandom wank" and "this is not dumb fandom wank, this is serious shit"; it is well before this stuff. So.

tl;dr: I don't know what the OTW will look like in a year or two or five, and this shit has reminded me I shouldn't bank on pretending I do. So, I'm mirroring stuff elsewhere, not because I think the org will collapse, but because maybe the centralization of fandom is overall bad, actually. I encourage folks to consider their own feelings on the topic, since this is as good a reason as any to consider for yourself how you feel about this stuff.

Now answering the rest of the ask I’ll drop the update about my mood under there because it’s not pretty.

I’ll admit i am not doing well this days.

I can’t say why exactly i’m feeling bad, I always had up and down mood and some down mood really makes me feel low.

I know that it’s not based on anything factual but i can’t help but feel hated or judged. Everything that i say or show in front of more than one person is doubted by my own brain. I have to force myself to not delete everything that i type because i feel awful.

If i tried to put words on it, i hope that it’s not true despite knowing i dont’ have any real reason but i just feel like a pathetic person who is annoying and who’s presecence is a nuisance. Anyone who say the contrary is saying it out of pity and if I try to say that i’m sad it’s for attention because why the heck should i say that ? It’s not like I’m important or anything i must have a huge ego.

I’m doing a lot of things wrongs, I feel awful for taking so much time doing my packages or doing my homeworks.

I know it’s temporary and it will go aways because it always goes away at some point so i just try to live with it until it fades and I can go back on doing alright.

Right now only thing that helps me keep my head distracted is working on my game or being forced to go to class because going out at least force me to take care of how i look and all.

This is a big vent post and i’m really sorry about it but i can’t post on insta without feeling bad, i don’t have the strenght to text my friends without feeling bad and tumblr is the only place i managed to show sign of life with minimal feeling of being worthless.

It may be worrying to read all that but like i said it will go away but i just don’t like going trough it, i’ll be better in a few days it’s alright.

"Fishing", or "Baiting", or "Defend Yourself!" (variation)

I tweet my fav show is Top Gear. People ask "UK or US?" which I ignore, mainly because it's a silly question but also because it would be rude of me (being a member of the entertainment community) to answer that honestly (which I kind of just did but whatevs). So, at this point, I don't consider it "fishing" for a reply.

Over time, I drop more context clues, "Oh I've seen like a hundred episodes blah blah blah", of which, only Top Gear UK has "hundreds of episodes", and Top Gear US is like only on it's 3rd(?) season or something. So putting the clues together would mean I like UK, or, shit, maybe both, but most likely UK. I get the same question, "UK or US?", usually from the same people, increasingly aggressive, and in ALL CAPS. Then-

(hold on a second I'm synching my iphone because I'm gonna go get a new one today, I was gonna hold out for the 5S but I don't use Siri for shit and all I do is accidentally hit the Siri button when I'm texting and it bums me out)

Then- In an awesome turn of events, some cool people that follow me decided to make a petition, or twitition or something CUTTING EDGE. It's a petition to get me on Top Gear UK! If I wanted to get on Top Gear US that would be a lot easier, right? I mean, at least in terms of basic travel and stuff. It's like a 12 hour plane ride on a Virgin Atlantic full of salty nuts, thin socks, swollen feet, oxygen made of pure farts and so on...Let's just say it'd be a journey, so surely- I must REALLY love Top Gear UK. (I do).

Still I get the aggro question "UK OR US?!!. Then I twit-follow the Top Gear UK presenters, I tweet Jeremy, I talk about James May's love of trains. You might say I know a little shit about these dudes. But not once has anyone heard me talk about how much Rutledge Wood prefers a Corvette over a Smartcar (Rut- no offense I had to google this and yes, I would too, especially that new one).

At this point, you would think maybe the cats out of the bag, and in fact it is Top Gear UK that I prefer. But this actually just makes the same people even angrier, because now I'm talking about Top Gear UK and I have still not answered their question, or took the bait, or more importantly replied to their tweet, which I am starting to notice is pretty important to some people, no matter how they get a reply, which is why I am completely random in who I reply to for the most part.

So yeah thats whats going on.

I'm gonna go watch The Office.

I lowkey have to wonder if it could open the door to the idols becoming (somehow) even more obsessed with the player 🤔. And you´re certainly right about that! You downloading the game several times proves that you didn´t just get it on a whim but that you´ve actually grown to care about them so much that you couldn´t bare to part from them!

And it gets even worse if you still put all the dias you have into your favs on all of your account because in their wishful thinking they´ll absolutely take that as a sign that you must simply adore them if you´re willing to go through so much for them <3

You´re even spending money? Oh, they really wish you didn´t need to but the gacha system and the other characters are trying to prevent them from getting home to you early so at least they´re happy to see that they´re the only one you would spend this amount of money on

Oh, maybe you made multiple accounts just so you could keep going for their cards? Aww, you´re so cute, they just know that you love them as much as they love you! Why else would you put so much of your time into a game? There must be something here that makes you keep playing and they really hope that it´s them

But of course, with you having more than one account that just means they have to be even more on the defense because all the other idols are just itching to get their chance and make you pull for them on a new account. They may have been beathen the first time around but they´re not going to allow it a second time!

So feeling threatened, your fave is sure to get even more intense, maybe even trying to find a way to remove certain lines of code so that their rivals are simply going to disintegrate into nothingness.

You wouldn´t mind, right? Obviously they are your favorite and you don´t need anyone else but them. They´re enough for you just as you are the only person they ever want to look at ever again!

So just let them love you properly without any distractions <3

I have an unpopular opinion about Timothee: I dont really feel the same outrage as most fans to his recent comments or that poor snl hamas joke anymore due to his last gq interview. I am a fan of him as an actor but dont really care about him as person.

Back in 2017 - 2019 I was the biggest Timmy fan. I deeply connected to him as an introvert and anxiety and really believed that the person he was in interviews and public events was a really him and not a curated persona to generate a fandom. Post 2020 I rarely put any celeb on any pedestal or really except maybe Tomdaya because I really believe they are authentic individuals. (Maybe I'm delulu for thinking that but they haven't disappointed me yet so).

In his last gq interview from my perspective really opens up the struggle of having instant fame and also growing up as an adult with all these hats of personas he puts out to the public whilst still holding on the notion that he's not gonna change for hollywood. But the reality is the more famous you are the more you change. Timothee changed and that's not my business anymore.

I just don't believe ppl trying to cancel him or outrage because in a few weeks when wonka comes out and ppl will forget. It's kinda like Doja cat. Her antics are annoying but her music is great. There's always gonna be a grey area when it comes to ppls fav. I don't agree personally but I see ppl flip flop over things their favs do like a krabby patty.

Hopefully this doesn't come out like I'm a disciple of clubchalamet but I feel like sometimes in stan culture nuance is lost.

I didn't read the entirety of Timmy's GQ interview (I'll have to get to that later), so I might be lost on the context of your sentiments, but all I'll say is this: You can feel however you want to feel. You can be outraged, or you can not be outraged. Nobody can really tell you how to feel. It's your own personal opinion. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Many people (including myself) on the other hand, felt as though that particular joke on SNL last night was in poor taste, and quite insensitive. 🥴

This is tricky, because on one hand, I kind of feel like whenever you're in the public eye, you kind of DO have to wear various different personas in a way, because you're working in the public eye, you have to maintain certain boundaries, and you also want your private life to be sacred as well.

It doesn't mean you're being "Fake", it just means that the more famous you become, the more and more you may have to juggle various different demands, and put on different "faces" to the public. Sometimes, let's face it, you just don't want to be on that red carpet. But you suck it up, smile, pose, and get on with your job because that's your JOB. You're getting paid. Same with us regulars who have a 9-5 job. I'm still myself at work, but in a professional setting, I carry myself a certain way. You think I always want to wake up early and go to work? PLEASE. 😅 It doesn't mean I'm "fake", or that I'm not being myself, it just means that I'm putting my "professional" self out there in the forefront, and dimming down my "home self" while at work in the office.

I think most people are multifaceted actually. I don't think people are as black and white as some fans make celebrities out to be.

This might sound crazy but......Tbh, I don't put ANY celebrity (or ANYBODY for that matter) on a pedestal. No, NOT even Tom and Zendaya lol. 😅 (*gasp! Shocker... I know lol) It's not because I think they'll disappoint me one day, it's more so because I just wasn't raised to put anyone on a pedestal or to idolize people. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I actually don't think idolizing people or worshiping them is healthy? 🥴 And I don't think humans were meant to be worshipped or heavily idolized, and I feel like that's one of the reasons why some celebrities (especially music artists) end up having mental breakdowns, go off the rails, or struggle with fame. I think it's unnatural. 😔

Don't get me wrong! There are celebrities who I love very much, and I love their work, I love watching them, I enjoy them, I think they're pretty/handsome/funny/talented/charismatic, etc. and I LOVE them! 😊😃 I'm a HUGE HUGE fan!

BUT! I never idolize them, or think they can do no wrong, because to me, they're just human and can make mistakes just like me, and just like 100% of the other humans out here. That way, if one of my faves DOES seriously disappoint me one day in the future, I may be sad about it, but I'm not devastated, because I never put them high up on a pedestal to begin with. I just viewed them as a regular human being. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I kind of feel like some fans actually put their faves up on too HIGH of a pedestal tbh, and then they become super angry or annoyed when their faves don't do/act/behave/say exactly what they want them to...and my thought is, "Well, you're the one who thought they were ABOVE reproach and were 'perfect', so that's probably part of the problem right there..." 🥴 (I'm talking about fans complaining about minor things regarding their faves, not major offenses or crimes)

I kind of like to view my faves (and other celebrities) as actually very human, and probably under a LOT more stress than I realize. That industry can be very unforgiving, stressful, and kind of crazy....

So, I actually think it's a GOOD thing that you don't put your faves on a pedestal tbh. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Like I said before, I do think that humans in general DO wear different hats. We're complex individuals. It doesn't mean someone is fake, it just means they have to be different in different scenarios. A man may go to work and have to put on his "CEO" hat. But when he comes home, he's putting on his "husband" and "father" hat. He's the same man, but he just has different duties, ways of being, and things he needs to attend to in different scenarios.

I think that large amounts of fame (especially if it's overnight) DOES change everyone actually... But maybe not in the way you might think. Whether it might make an actor more of a recluse because their privacy is constantly being invaded, or maybe makes an artist more aware of different worlds/people/walks of life due to traveling and touring several different places around the world, or whether it's just viewing things differently from a different perspective because you've been BURNED in this industry... I def think it's inevitable that fame will change you on SOME level. It doesn't mean you change into being a mean/entitled person or anything... But more so that your life has undoubtedly changed, so how could it not affect you on SOME level.... Ykwim? Some celebrities never used to suffer from anxiety until they got super famous, and now they suffer from anxiety, depression, paranoia, etc. Like, YES...fame can change you. And sometimes the changes are sad. 😔 I've seen some of my faves change over the years due to the wear and tear that fame put on them. 😔 They used to be so happy-go-lucky, trusting, open, and innocent at first, but then after years of massive fame, they became depressed, anxiety-ridden, distrustful, shut down, super private, and burned out due to all of the pressure of fame. 😭 So yes, in a way it changed them because of the demands. Maybe even because people around them changed.

It also changes how people interact with you. Some celebrities have said that they would just like to be treated like a normal human being. I believe some when they say that. But it's hard because people DON'T treat them that way most of the time. Do you see the never-ending cycle?

Fans/the general public definitely have selective amnesia lol 😅🤣 I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing disappointment if one of your faves does/says something you didn't like. But this whole "cancel culture" thing when someone in the public eye does something you didn't like is a bit much for me. I think it depends on what it is. Not every mistake or action is on the same level imo. Whether a fan chooses to get over the SNL jokes or not is up to that fan. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Some may choose to never like or support Timothee ever again, while another fan may post angry tweets about it, but will move on and be SAT for the Wonky Movie next month. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Each fan can decide what they feel is the "last straw" for not supporting their fave or some celebrity in the media. I think that should be a personal decision for each person? Maybe it's not so much that people "forget", but more so that they have allowed this disgrace some mercy, but will still support his work unless he does something worse in the future.

LOL! No, not in the least 😅 I totally understood what you were trying to say. I just think that fandom/stan culture is pretty complex and isn't always black and white.

Plus, I feel like you can like someone as a person, but not like their CHOICES...yet still feel like deep down they're overall still a decent person.

The flipside is also true... You can like someone's WORK, but not necessarily care for them as a person. It happens all the time. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I completely understand where you’re coming from. The A Tale of Two Cities is sure to through anyone off. Sorry!! I mainly use this blog to post my ramblings and creative projects that I can’t really put anywhere else, plus a few one shots. I might transfer more of my one-shots to here from Ao3, but I simply haven’t gotten around to it.

Love to hear that you love the classics, though!! I wish I had the patience to read more than I have already. I’m an extremely slow reader, so it makes it difficult to get through classics (even though I love them dearly). For anime/manga, I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan myself. Not that I don’t enjoy it, but I don’t go out of my way to read or watch something in that genre because it’s in that genre. I watch or read anything that may pique my interest, regardless of the format, be it on Youtube, Hulu, Crunchyroll, etc. I haven’t really even seen many animanga myself, to be honest.

I wouldn’t say the seven that you listed are my favorite media, they are just the ones that I have written fanfiction/analyses about and posted it on here. I use that list as a masterlist guide for people to find my meaningful posts easier! So, not my favorite, just whats available to peruse on my account. As for my actual favorite… it’s hard to say. I don’t think I have seven I can list off the top of my head, but I do have some favorites in general.

Interestingly, for most of my “favorites”, I have never written a fanfiction for, nor do I read many fanfics for (with the exception of a couple of favorites). I don’t know why this is. Maybe because I find the original story too good to be expanded upon? I can’t say for certain.

A Silent Voice is easily favorite movie. It’s also my favorite anime, if you don’t require the anime to be a series. I haven’t watched any movie better, animated or otherwise, and I’m not sure I ever will. The characters are all so beautifully human, who say and do the wrong things, who are awful to each other, but who also do kind things, who develop, who change, even as others stay the same. Not to mention that the animation itself is beautiful. I could go on and on about this movie; I cry every time I watch it. I’d say it’s my favorite piece of media in general. Everything else falls behind it. Nothing can top it (at least not yet). Fun fact, if you didn’t already know: the English voice actor for Shouko, the main female lead, is actually deaf. Wonderful voice casting as well, just to top things off.

Bungou Stray Dogs is my favorite manga as of right now. I love it for many of the same reasons I love A Silent Voice; the characters are horribly human and complex, despite their inhuman abilities. Each character is interesting and unique, and while I do have gripes with the main storytelling, Asagiri’s Bungou Stray Dogs: BEAST really makes up for it. All of the character designs are also very unique and thought-out. Each character and their design leaves me spiraling as I think and analyze. It really triggers the autism LMAO.

Child of Light is my favorite video game. While I do have the most hours logged into Genshin Impact (and it is a close second in terms of favorites), Child of Light is simply one of those games that I can never forget. I have a lot of good childhood memories tied with it. I also completed the entire thing in one sitting in about 10 hours, which is the first and probably last time I ever speed-run a video game (speed-run is used loosely here because I am not “speedy” in any sense of the word). Anyway, Child of Light is a very beautiful game both in visuals (with its watercolor game design) and music (one of the best soundtracks in any game, in my opinion). The language in the game is also very unique — every character speaks in a rhyming pattern, all except the Jester character, who you would THINK would speak in rhymes but fails miserably every time. Each character is as fantastical as the next, ranging from a water droplet to a mouse. I wish everyone would play this game, because it’s so fun and so beautiful.

The Grishaverse is my favorite book series, though there are multiple series within the universe. I just don’t have a favorite (definitely not the Grisha Trilogy though 😭). Although it’s been a while since I’ve read the books, I seriously couldn’t put them down when I was reading them. They are a perfect blend of fantasy and realism, with believable characters and powers. While the OG series is genuinely not good in my opinion, the Six of Crows and King of Scars Duologies are actual masterpieces. Six of Crows is full of action, intensity, and found family, while King of Scars balances it out with political intrigue. Very, very well written and well done book series in plot, character, and setting. The TV show is a crime against the books, honestly, but it’s okay, Just read the books, they are better.

Merlin is my favorite TV show. I actually really love watching medieval settings. Not as much reading (not that I don’t like them in books, I just don’t search them out for the purpose of being medieval), but I love to watch them. I like admiring the old settings, buildings, clothes, and lifestyles that are being presented. I also love Arthurian retellings, so Merlin kind of hits the spot. I don’t have as many good reasons for loving this series, I just do 😭. Best (b)romance of the century. I did cry at the end when I watched it. Also, thank you to the Merlin fandom for reaching me what a good fanfiction is supposed to look like.

That’s all I can think of. I don’t really have a favorite individual book, classic or otherwise. I think that’s kind of impossible for me. I’ve read many great series, and I assume I will read a great many more to come.

I’m not sure if I’ll watch the Haikyuu movie. It’s been a long time since I’ve watched the anime, but if I come across it and I can watch it for free, then I’d be down honestly. I have been keeping up with Demon Slayer, with plans to read the manga maybe, so I am pretty excited for the new season!! And don’t get me started on the new All for the Game book!! I need it in my hands right now.

Duncan.

When it comes to Duncan, there are three things I've been wanting to discuss for some time now. Duncan's personality, his storyline and his feelings towards both Courtney and Gwen. A lot of my thoughts will be based on his behavior in different seasons of the show, and some of them will be just my headcanons (but trust me, they'll be reasonable too). I know that TD is after all more like a comedy show, in which things that in real life we would consider bad/disturbing/impossible/off-putting/sad are simply funny to us when we watch it, because of the way they are presented. They are supposed to make us laugh, so we usually do, with or without any second thoughts. But I'm from that type of people who likes to analyze everything and everyone, even if it's just a penguin from one infamous movie. I don't care. I just love doing it.

When I watched Total Drama for the first time, which happened not so long ago actually, because when I was a kid, my parents didn't allow me watch most of the modern animation (It's a long story, and it doesn't really matter right now). I mentioned this fact because it's important for me to let you know, that I don't like any characters because of the pure nostalgia, since I never watched TD before. I started this show when I already had my own opinions and knowledge about how to share them. So when I say that I like a character, there's no doubt that I perfectly understand their flaws, bad character traits, and I like this character not because I'm wearing my pink glasses and I refuse to take them off, not wanting to stop admiring my favorite character with the same passion, with which I used to admire them when I was small.

That's why when I say I really like Duncan, it definitely doesn't mean that I never criticize him and his doings. Actually, I think that's the reason why I'm interested in his persona so much. He is anything but perfect, and this is a big "YES" to me. My favorite characters are never simple, and I doubt that yours are. It's not necessary to associate yourself (kin) with your favs, but I like to believe that still, the main reason why we like some fictional guys is something that we might have in common with them. It can be buried deep inside of you, and it can take a long time filled with constant self-analysis and concentration to figure it out, but it's usually really entertaining, and can be actually worth it.

One of the things that i want to talk about, is Duncan's part of his personality which is, in my opinion, overlooked. Some people already mentioned it, and it's pretty obvious if you think about it. But here, on subreddit, I never saw anyone talking about it, which kinda disappointed me, because even though it's pretty obvious, it's still important.

Duncan is a typical attention attractor. Yeah, I know, it really is obvious. It's kinda mixed with his "lone wolf" status, but is still really notable. You can see his attempts at making everyone look at him when he bullies Harold or somebody else (which is a rare case), or when he's simply being a brat again. Sometimes he can say something controversial, even though I'm preatty sure he knows that he's gonna get his ass kicked right after that. Like when he mocks Chris's challenges, and then it's either Chris himself, or Chef, who makes him suffer for saying crap about their ideas. You have to be an idiot to not see it coming, and Duncan isn't dumb. He may act like a total jerk at times, but he can also be sneaky, unpredictable and surprisingly intelligent when he wants to. He is really lazy and tends to give up quickly when he can't do something well from the start, unlike Courtney, who will keep on trying and trying until it's over, even if her loss is inevitable. Duncan being an attention attractor perfectly explains his behavior in TDAS, making his storyline there just a little bit more understandable. This is why I never had any problems with him "losing his edge". Because if you think about it from this angle, he never really did. All of his problems in All Stars he created himself. The easiest way to brought people's attention to you is to be insufferable and mean all the time, and that's exactly what Duncan's been doing since the first episode. I'm not saying he isn't taking any pleasure in humiliating others, he does, but in some odd way, I'd say. I'll try to explain how I see this, but before I do it, I'd like to remind you that I don't justify his actions and I'm not trying to victimize him and make him look good. I'm just trying to understand the world from his perspective, the way he sees things and how he feels. Okay, let's get to it.

Duncan's probably really insecure about a lot of things in himself. An old story about a bully being actually weaker then everyone thought might be a cliché, but is actually works in real life. Now see, Duncan's not a psychopath. He is probably a sadist at some point, but there's no way he can be an actual psychopath, a person who lacks empathy towards other people around them. You only have to remember that "bunny" episode, and how willing Duncan was to make his friend feel better to realize how caring he can be when it comes to people that matter to him. When it comes to Harold, there were some episodes in which these two could get along pretty well. In Action Duncan continued to rip Harold off, but in the same season he admitted that he values Harold in some way, and then he even praised him (TDA, episode 11, 18:00 and 18:40). In Action Duncan also mentioned that he bullies Harold for making Courtney go home in a previous season, but I think it's a lie, or just an excuse for him to not stop on mocking him. Harold is like a fall guy for Duncan, someone who can't fight him back and that's why the easiest prey. If Duncan needs to prove something to himself, he will go and punch Harold, just to calm the rage inside of him. When Duncan feels weak, he can also just say something rude about him, or do something that will make Harold look stupid. And that way, he makes himself believe that he's fine, that he's safe, that no one will try to hurt him, as long as he is not as weak as Harold.

But in All Stars? There was no Harold in All Stars, which means no one to mock. Of course, there were some other weak contestants, like Cameron, but Harold was the safest option, the one that Duncan knew for a really long time. Perhaps bullying Harold became a habit for Duncan in latest seasons, even though in WT they didn't communicate a lot due to Duncan quitting the show. So in All Stars he doesn't have that one person he will be extremely rude to, making him behave differently from the beginning, not so harsh already. He doesn't notice it for some time. But then he starts to have problems with Gwen, acting all weird and not paying him attention. And Duncan hates not getting attention. He admitted it in the first episode of TDAS, when Courtney ignored him instead of glaring back. He stopped getting the attention he needed, and then he realised how much his behavior's changed since he came there, since both Gwen and Courtney ignored and avoided him. He started acting out in attempts to make them notice him, especially Courtney, since she almost didn't say a single word to him. Duncan likes challenges, he likes when a person he's interested in is hard to get. For him, trying to make Courtney jealous was like a new game, and eventually, he went too far, making Gwen feel like a pawn, like a tool for fixing Duncney. So no wonder she dumped him pretty fast.

And now let's talk about Duncan's fears. When Gwen broke up with him, instead of understanding his mistakes and realising that the reason they aren't together anymore is his own neglect and his annoying obsession with Courtney, he immediately thought that Gwen dumped him because he's not that cool anymore, because he lost his edge. And that says a lot about him and the way he sees himself. He thinks that him being a jerk to everyone is what makes him wanted and needed, that his loved ones will love him back as long as he's strong and intimidating. That's why when he's in search of a flaw, the first thing he noticed was his change from a total "bad guy" to something more complicated, (more interesting). Duncan freaks out. Like, really freaks out. That is the only explanation to his sudden need to cause trouble, to hurt someone. He feels like he can't play the role he has been playing for his whole life, like he just can't do that anymore for some reason, when actually the most of it is just in his head. Ironically, he trapped himself in his own ball of fears and complexes, and then, because of being too afraid that everyone will notice, he starded being too obvious about it, and everyone actually noticed. While others (most of them) seemed to like his new soft and open personality, Duncan was sure that everyone secretly judges and is making fun of him. Probably with Chris mocking him all the time he just became a walking self-disappointment, thinking most of the time about how to prove that he's still strong and free. (And "free" is an important word, and we will get back to it later) That's why it doesn't matter how stupid the idea of blowing up Chris's cottage (mantion) was, it was crazy enough to seem worthy to Duncan. Just because this would be "bad" enough.

Only he miscalculated. Being so not okay with his own change made him think that everybody else isn't okay with it either. That the reason he gets hurt by others is because he isn't him anymore, and that probably makes him feel useless. He can't live his normal life when people think "wrong" of him. Duncan has so many things he wants to prove to everybody, but no one really cares about his change, and that's what Duncan's not able to understand. When the cottage is gone, Duncan is sent to prison. Was it worth it? No. Did he make everyone "respect" and "like" him again? No, he made the situation only worse. In the end, he did all of that for nothing.

I said that we were gonna come back to this "freedom" thing? Well, there's not much to discuss, I guess a lot of other users said that before me, (it goes with everything in this post, tbh) but Duncan wants to be free SO bad, that I can't imagine it being just his another act, his punk little duty. Remember how often he uses those "Hey, don't tell me what to do!" phrases? Remember how he absolutely hates being commanded? (Unless it's Courtney) And that's not just a normal thing, no, it's a huge trigger for him. He gets defensive so fast when somebody's trying to put him down. (Heather calling him "pretty boy" in TDA, episode 3 13:55) Moments like this just show how fragile and sensitive he truly is. But from where could these problems be? The most obvious answer would be his relationship with his parents. We do know that Duncan's parents are not so proud of his life, and that's not surprising at all. But that old short video with them (Duncan's parents asking him to win the money) is what makes me feel like there's more than just dissatisfaction between this family. Don't get me wrong, I think his father loves him very much, and I'm not gonna make a monster out of him for being mad at Duncan and his criminal tendencies, it's a normal thing to be mad at. But I might assume that he is a strict person, who tells people what to do on a daily basis (He's a cop after all). Of course, a lot of Duncan's impulsive decisions that he's made are easily explained by his wish to rebel, to show his father that he can't just decide for him. I mean, Duncan wasn't always a delinquent, right? I'm sure he was always weirdly loud and wayward, but his father had to push him really hard if after that his son became a criminal. But it doesn't mean that Duncan isn't brutal without his want to stand out. It doesn't mean that if his father was more lenient with him he'd behave better. Perhaps it would be only for the worst, because then Duncan wouldn't have any limits. It's just how it is and that's all. His relationship with his mother is less understandable, but I'll tell you my theory anyway. It's canon that Duncan has a lot of relatives, including siblings. (we don't know the exact number) Here's what I think: having many siblings means sharing your parent's attention. Duncan grew up dealing with the fact that sometimes he has to wait before he can get his mother to listen to him, because she's busy with the other kids. (I just assume Duncan's not the youngest, but even if he is, that doesn't change a lot) I don't think that he holds a grudge on his siblings, but I do think that he might be offended on his parents (maybe without even realizing it). So to sum up: Duncan feels like he never gets his mother's attention and thinks that the only way he can get it - is to do something big and loud, something that will MAKE her notice him. On the other hand, his father makes him feel like he owns him. Like someone is trying to take over him, make him something he isn't. That's why his crimes aren't only his attempt at making his mother more concerned of him, but also a sign to his controlling dad, that by screaming and punishing him he won't make Duncan someone else. Duncan will be himself, even if it means that his dad will be disappointed.

And the last but not the least, Duncan and his feeling towards Courtney and Gwen. There's no need to repeat how toxic both of these relationships turned out, because you have to be blind to not notice that. The main question for me is about him loving them. Did he really? Sometimes we forget that these people are teens, they were only 16 when the show started, so relationships weren't supposed to be a serious thing for them. And Duncan wasn't ready for someone as serious as Courtney for sure. Of course, he liked her appearance, her body. He liked some of her character traits, like her being extremely bossy to everyone. But he only liked her complex character in times when they weren't together, and when her anger wasn't directed at him (just check out TDA, he doesn't like it when she's treating him like an employee). It seems like she was just another challenge for him, another thing to achieve. But what happened after he got her to himself? When they were back together again, he got tired of her pretty easily, and even though they had their moments, her being constantly jealous and mad is what made him lost his interest in her. It made him stop having a crush at her. But being in love with her? It's a whole other thing. Again, they were teens. And from what I know, Duncan and Courtney had been dating for no longer than a year (While being on set of TDI and TDA, and then for some months before TDWT), and Gwuncan probably didn't last longer. The most promising couple from the show, which actually has a future was Geoff and Bridgette, since both of them are mentally stable people who can actually help each other out. Love is a really strong feeling which actually comes with time, whether you like it or not (please don't try to bring up that "love from first sight" thing), and both Gwencan and Duncney didn't have that time to truly connect. Shame. Still, my personal favourite was Gwencan, since those guys were just better for each other. Instead of trying to change Duncan, Gwen understood him and liked him the way he was. If only AS didn't happen they might've been the best couple in the show for me! Fresh TV completely messed up Gwen's priorities in All Stars. In WT she's sad that her friendship with Courtney is over, but she mostly glad that now she doesn't have to hide anything and can be with the guy she likes without any secrets! Then, in the end of WT Gwen doesn't care abouth her at all, and THEN, in AS she's suddenly obsessed with Courtney forgiving her, and AT THE SAME TIME she keeps defending herself, explaining why she didn't steal anyone. If you think that you didn't do anything wrong, then why are you sorry? For what? It was such a pain to watch Gwuncan die like this. Especially when they just made her stop liking Duncan immediately after AS started. It was like these two never happened and she didn't have that crush on him for some time (she already liked him after TDA ended). But I don't hate Duncney. It was also really entertaining and I liked them at first. They could've been a perfect example of two difficult people getting better together, helping each other overcome their weaknesses. Them being different might've been the best thing about their duo! The problem was... Courtney. And her lack of character development in the next seasons after TDI. Duncney's perfect climax should've been Courtney losing the season and not winning the money but not caring so much already, because Duncan helped her become more laid back and not so impulsive and demanding. Fair? Maybe not. Healthy? Healthier then if she actually wins the money and just lives in that mad state forever, until she dies.

I guess I'm out of thoughts. For now...

What's ur fav DT character you made?

Tough to say overall. Compromise: I'll answer for different criteria! One I'd most wanna hang with irl if the cast were real: Probably Oliver. I like Karen's personality too, but I fear my comic antics would bewilder and frighten her. Oliver would be much, MUCH harder to baffle in this way. Plus, he'd totally wanna watch awful CG mockbusters with me, such as Ratatoing. I'm shaking with anger imagining this but I still REALLY wanna do it. Need to rewatch Ratatoing, I hate it so much. It makes me feel so alive. The character I find the most interesting: Probably Callum Crown! I wrote a lot more for the character on paper, unsure if I was gonna make more Dialtown stuff, and it's driving me nuts because it'd be an injustice to reveal info about his past and his actions/motivations in a post like this. The big issue with Dialtown's setting is... well, it's not Callum's story, it's the story of Gingi and all of his bizarre little friends. There's only one NPC in Dialtown who could tell us things about Callum that would likely shock the audience, and he's playing dumb, though the act falls occasionally. Without an obvious narrator, Callum's story remains what it is in Dialtown... a biased and stitched-together account of the most important man who may have ever lived. It's frustrating to know that while every account of Callum in-game isn't intentionally untruthful, they're all very incomplete pictures of him, and all from people who didn't really understand him. There's so much about his character that I'd love to talk about, I just... can't. Because it's not relevant to any of the information that Dialtown's NPCs were willing to provide to the audience. But, it's all in my head and always has been. If I were to reveal everything I'd decided about Callum's motivations/actions and you were to replay the final route, you'd notice some seemingly throwaway statements suddenly being very relevant to how Dialtown's world works. Granted, the statements are 100% generic without that context, ofc. It's a habit of mine, I compulsively write more material for my characters. I get too invested in them, it's a disease. On the one hand, yeah, I'm a pox upon the face of the earth. On the other: hey! At least my characters stay consistent across entries because I know what they'd do/say next before even starting a sequel story! Sorry, yeah, no spoilers ofc, but expect more of Callum in future DT content. ;) The character I most enjoy writing for: Very tough to answer. Maybe Mayor Mingus, just baaaaarely? Her uptight and confrontational nature allows her to dominate any scene she's placed in. There aren't really any Mingus scenes where she isn't the main (if not TOTAL) center of attention. Other than Gingi, I'm not sure if any other character HAS the ability to force a dynamic in any scene you put them in, hell, probably even better than Gingi. Even Gingi's chicanery has its limits (Tango being a good example), but Mingus is the same to everyone. That relentless consistency really compliments her obsession with conformity. Plus, it fits that almost every trait she hates in the player happen to be traits she possesses, so ofc her note REALLY presses the 'lawless' side of Gingi's nature, because it's the only stable logical footing she has. Of COURSE she's a law-abiding citizen, she IS the law. The character whose design I most enjoy: Likely Mayor Mingus, again. Her head is my cat's head. C'MON.

My opinion about Another Code : Recollection Part 1

First of all, I'm an old fan of the serie, so of course I compared the Switch compilation and the DS and Wii version.

I don't want to discourage people who are curious and want to play the game. If you're even a lil bit interested in them, play them, on DS, Wii or Switch, pick your poison and make your own opinion on it. Don't take my word as the absolute thing or whatever. It's not because I'm mixed about it that people shouldn't play it. Because I still think that a game that was, to me, very niche, from a studio that went bankrupt AND from 2005, is incredible. For a game like that to get a fully voiced remake almost twenty year after the release of its first installment, with most of the old crew working on them is to be celebrated ! Even if I didn't like everything, they still did an amazing job and I'm glad to see the franchise alive again in 2024.

I have strong feelings and I feel the need to share them to see if someone "relates" or not.

I may talk about spoilers but I'll try to limit them, be vague and put a warning before and after if I state it clearly.

Soo, now that this "introduction is over ~

In this essay I will

I have a LOT to say about Another Code Recollection. Good and Bad. Sadly, I have more things to say about the bad than the good. I have mixed feeling about it. I was very VERY excited when Recollection was first announced, I cried even, because I care about "Another Code Two Memories" and "Another Code R" A LOT, it's my childhood, they're in my top fav games list, they were very meaningful to me and I was sad it ended with Cing and with no hope of seeing the conclusion of Matthew's story. Even tho I was happy, I was still a bit scared about how they would adapt some of the puzzle on the switch. And I think I was right to have this fear. They did some cool things and others that I disliked.

I'll say my "+" and "-" and develop them further bellow each point.

+ Positive :

The graphism They're very nice, the characters's models are nicely done, the scenery and everything else is definitely a BIG glow up (mostly compared to the DS graphics)

The Redesign I like some of them a LOT, big glow up for almost everyone. I particularly love Charlotte and Janet. Charlotte finally looks her age! I kinda miss the old Matthew but his new version is also good.

Puzzles use the Switch motions thingy Just a few of them tho. I think that's cool, because they sadly don't use it very much in other games. And it's nice to see them try to replicate the same feeling you had with the DS and Wii games.

Confirmation of theories and new bits of story It's nice to see that after all these years. /!\SPOILER/!\ I'm thinking about Frannie's relative. /!\END OF SPOILER/!\

Musics They nailed the music; it still has that nostalgic and lonely vibe for Two Memories and the carefree with a hint of sadness vibe in R.

Voice Acting A very nice addition and very well done. I know there's English Dub but I played it with the Japanese voices. And being able to choose between them is nice.

Possibility to switch language That's maybe a very "me" + point, but the fact that I could change the game in every language available is cool. Even more for the jp, cause now if I want to I could try and practice my reading skills because there's an option to have katakana and hiragana on top of kanji. I just think that's neat.

Hint mode I just tried it in the tutorial but I think it's a nice touch for when you don't know where to go or how to resolve a puzzle.

Relationship between Ashley and D The way they would mimic each other poses was all I ever wanted. I love them a lot and seeing them being a little bit closer than I remember them to be in the DS version was great !

Art The new sprites are very pretty and it's nice to see the improvement the artist made. The endcredits was very pretty !

Flowchart & Map I like to see flowchart in any type of game, it's helpfull and pretty. I like that it was updated along with the story. And I also enjoy the map and the little commentary Ashley was "writing" on it.

May I request Toya with a reader who's really good at English, like the reader gets the highest score in their class and gets the top 5th place in the whole form in each of their exams for all English papers; But in the final exam, one of the reader's classmate has surpassed them in English writing paper, that person scored 2 marks higher than the reader, the reader therefore doesn't score the highest in their class like they did in the previous exams, so the reader feels very distressed about it and blames themself for not doing well enough; How would Toya react and comfort the reader in this situation? (⁠･ั⁠ω⁠･ั)

Toya Aoyagi x !Reader (comfort)

Tw: soft angst, crying, self-depreciation

Well, one week after you did your test, there are the results, in a mural on the wall.

Your face is with disappointment while you see the results. You just lose for 2 marks.

You get out of that place with an angry expression while looking down, avoiding visual contact with everyone. Some people ask you something like "are you ok?" And you just ignored them. You lock yourself in the bathroom, and you start to cry really hard

Some time passed, and you went back to your classroom. The class ended at this point, the bell ringed, and you walked away to your home. Someone touched your shoulder, and you shouted pissed off to that person:

"What do you want?!" You turn to face this person with an angry face... The angry face turned to sad when you saw who this person was. The person was Toya, you almost at the same second asked apologies for him

"Hey... did something happen? All the day you're looking bad... it's because of the results? You're not looking like usual... I'm concerned." He asks with a concerned face, looking at you, after he holds carefully your hand and he kisses your forehead. You don't say anything, but he understands that it's for that reason you're like that

"May I escort you into your home?" He asks with love for you, and you just nod your head in agreement. You know, if you say anything, you probably would start to collapse in tears.

You guys get at your home, and Toya kisses your forehead, and he's in a way back to his home. You interrupt him holding him behind, in tears

"Please... please don't go..." You say while you're sobbing, he's really concerned about you now, so he holds you trying to comfort you

"My love... whatever you want" he says in a calming voice, he gives you a smile

"If you need to talk about what happened, I'm here for you" he says with a loving tone

You broke the hug, and you hold his hand. You bring him to your bedroom and close the door. You sit on your bed, put your two hands in your face, and you start to cry a lot again. Toya is really concerned with you

"Hey... I'm here for you, ok?" He holds you tight, and you do the same, you're supporting your head in his shoulder

"I... I'm so stupid... how can I just... just for two mistakes... I'm so dumb... why... I... I disappointed myself and everyone... I-" You're interrupted by Toya's hand in your mouth, his face is serious and concerned, and he starts to talk

"Don't tell about yourself like this! You're not stupid at all! You're very intelligent, amazing and beautiful! You're the most intelligent person that I know, so... shut your mouth! You're incredible!" He says in a loud tone, but not screaming, he takes his hand of your mouth, and you just hold him tighter, you're crying more than before

"You... you really mean that?" You say almost in a whisper, and he just keeps quiet for a few seconds, after he says:

"I mean it. I love you, you know? I don't have any reason to lie for you." He pushes away you guys's hug, he hold your cheek, and he presses a soft peck in your lips

"I'm concerned about you... I hate seeing you like this... look, you may not be in the first place, but when you have another test, I'm sure that you can get it!" He says in a sincere and loving tone for you. He's smiling at you

You stop a to crying a little, you smile at him in the same way, you kiss his cheek after it

"Thank you... for being here for me" you say it in a happy tone, and you hold him again. This time, you just close your eyes and just rest, he's caressing your hair in the most gentle way possible.
