Finally posting my first Rarijack one-shot for the Grand Galloping 20s, "So This Is Love." This is the first time I've posted my writing (or written any fanfiction) in years and years, so lemme know what you think.
Summary: After a mutually unsuccessful night at the Grand Galloping Gala, both Miss Rarity and April-Jacqueline find themselves at their wits' end in the Canterlot castle gardens while the gala continues without them.
Preview:
Polished marble sculptures and manicured jade hedges glistened by the light of the moon and her stars. The gardens of Canterlot Castle were beautiful. They would be much more beautiful if shared with another, Miss Rarity thought to herself bitterly.
“Surprised to see you all on your lonesome out here.”
She looked down the gravel path to a figure sitting at a stone bench. A woman, fitted in a fetchingly tailored pinstripe suit –– Miss Rarity’s suit actually, she designed it herself –– a perfectly curled ponytail –– she had spent nearly half an hour ironing out the flyaways –– and that obnoxiously drab stetson hat –– no relation to Miss Rarity. A half-spent cigarette fell from her lip, stamped out under her heel.

there was a video a while back where like this guy was approaching a girl to try and shoot his shot and get her number but before he could even reach her she was extending her hand to him to show him her wedding rings and they just laugh it off
and all i’m thinking is being out in public with bakugou and you needing to go use the bathroom real quick or something so he’s waiting for you by one of the tables and notices how one of the guys a couple chairs away was checking you out when you walked by to go inside the restroom, already giving them the death stare even though he knows you’d never leave him
especially not now that you’re recently engaged, so he’s ready to go scare him off if he bothers you when you return
already rising from his chair when he sees you leaving the bathroom and the guy is simultaneously getting up as well, phone ready in hand to ask for your number
so imagine the grin that forms on his face when you notice the guy and don’t even give him a chance to speak when you’re shooting your hands in front of you, flashing him the huge beautiful stone on your ring finger while pointing at it with your other hand even though it’s hard to miss with how much it shines under the sunlight
the guy giving you a defeated laugh while you return a polite one while continuing making your way back to your lover who is already bursting with pride, ready to engulf you in a hug and pull you into a kiss to further show everyone who you belong to

Something I’ve been thinking about lately is that small moment in “Air Turtle” where immediately after the Daves lose yet another game, Leo says how sorry he is and how he’s doing his best as the mascot. This moment is so short but it’s honestly jam-packed with a whole heap of characterization.
His need to apologize for things clearly not his fault - especially when it feels like he messes up the job he was given despite doing the best he can (the phrase “it’s not about you” takes a new meaning when this is one of the lessons to be learned from that - that he is not always solely responsible for things going wrong), his need to save face and make a connection with an older adult man in his life (something he consistently does throughout the series - he’s got a few daddy issues, always collecting potential father figures, it’s no wonder he jumps at the bit to keep rapport), and the way he sounds and looks and the words he chooses really pushes how he is just a kid (“Mr. the Dunk, I’m so sorry”).
Like I know it’s a one off moment that doesn’t truly mean much, but when put against the rest of the series it works really well with the rest of Leo’s established character and helps in solidifying later concepts as well.
