CHICAGO FIRE – GOD HAS SPOKEN (S01E11)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
                                         [background commotion]
Gabby Dawson: [grunts]
                            [grunts]
                            [straining]
                            [pained groan]
                            Shay? [grunts]
                            Shay.
                            Shay.
                            Hey. Shay, sweetie. Sweetie [groans]
                            Hey.
                            Shay, Shay.
You’re gonna be okay. You’re gonna be okay.
                                           [sirens approaching]
Gabby Dawson: [pants] You’re gonna be okay. You’re gonna
                            be okay.
                                                  cutscene
Nancy Casey: You look good, you really do. I’m so proud of you.
Matt Casey: Thanks.
Nancy Casey: How’s Hallie?
Matt Casey: We broke up.
Nancy Casey: Oh. But you were together for, what, four years?
Matt Casey: Eight.
Nancy Casey: Well, I never liked her.
Do you, uh… do you talk to your sister?
Matt Casey: Not really.
Nancy Casey: Well, the reason I’m asking is, um, my hearing’s
                         coming up.
Matt Casey: I know.
Nancy Casey: And I thought maybe this time… I’ve been thinking
about this a lot, Matthew… you could talk to her.
Matt Casey: It’s still hard for her.
Nancy Casey: It’s hard for her?
Look, I need to turn the page on this too, you know?
When am I gonna be allowed to do that, stuck in
                         here?
Matt Casey: Maybe you should’ve thought of that before you killed
                      dad.
                      Mom.
                                         [door buzzer sounds]
Man 1 (Orderly): All keys, cell phones, any metal objects must be
                            placed in the basket.
                                                cutscene
Paramedic: BP’s 180 over 100. Pulse of 56. Respirations of ten and
                    irregular.
Gabby Dawson: Her pupils are unequal, but she responded to light
                            on scene.
ER Doctor: Is she allergic to any medication?
Gabby Dawson: No.
Chief Boden: Gabriela.
                        You okay?
ER Doctor: We’re going to need a blood test, stat… [indistinct
                    chatter]… order labs, get a CBC… [continues
                    indistinctly]
Gabby Dawson: [sobs]
Chief Boden: She’s gonna be fine.
Gabby Dawson: Yeah.
Chief Boden: Gonna get you looked at, okay? Get you cleaned up.
Come on. It’s okay. Go ahead.
Kelly Severide: Is that her? Is that Shay?
Chief Boden: Let them do their job.
                        Kelly.
                        Kelly!
Kelly Severide: I want to see her.
Chief Boden: Right now, there’s nothing you can do.
Kelly Severide: What are they… what are they talking here?
                           She’s got a…a head injury?
                           How bad is it?
Chief Boden: I don’t know.
                                                  - Title -
                                    [indistinct hospital chatter]
Matt Casey: [panting] What have you heard?
Chief Boden: Moderate traumatic brain injury. And they’ve located
the brain swelling, so they’re gonna do an MRI,
try to determine the extent of the damage.
Mouch: If anybody can find a way to rally, it’s Shay.
Matt Casey: And Dawson’s all right?
Chief Boden: She has a laceration on her leg, but other than that,
                        she’s fine.
They’re gonna release her here in a minute.
Matt Casey: The other driver, this tow truck, was he DUI or?
Otis Zvonecek: No. Breathalyser came up negative.
Peter Mills: Stupid freak thing. Truck blew a tire.
Matt Casey: What about Shay’s family?
Kelly Severide: Mom’s in Tacoma. Dad’s in Baton Rouge. I left a
                          message for them both.
Chief Boden: Every thought, every prayer needs to be directed
                        down that hallway.
                       Okay?
                                               cutscene
Christopher Herrmann: This house needs a run, big time.
Mouch: Hey Dawson.
Firefighter: Hey Dawson.
Matt Casey: Hey.
Kelly Severide: Shay?
Gabby Dawson: Uh, she’s still in ICU, but, uh, the brain swelling
subsided, and she won’t need surgery or the
ICP catheter. They’re hoping she’s out of the
                             woods.
Chief Boden: Just spoke with Chief Hatcher. In the absence of
Shay, Candidate Peter Mills will fill in the vacated
                         post in an EMT capacity.
Gabby Dawson: For how long?
Chief Boden: Till Shay’s back in this house.
Otis Zvonecek: Hey, hey. Finally some good news. Listen to this.
That fire on North Hamlin… guess who the body
was. “The Chicago medical examiner identified
it to be that of Manuel ‘Flaco’ Rodriguez,
purported leader of the street gang, Insane
Kings, wanted for a string of unsolved West
Side murders, said a CPD spokesman.”
Mouch: So long, Flaco. God has spoken.
Christopher Herrmann: I don’t throw the word, karma, around a
lot, but that’s exactly what that is, my
                                        friends, with a capital K.
Matt Casey: Your brother can breathe easy, Cruz.
                      So can you.
Joe Cruz: Well, you got that right.
                                                     cutscene
Kelly Severide: Hey, Dawson. Hey.
What else did the doctors say?
Gabby Dawson: Uh, it’s a head injury. They’re hoping to get a better
indication of where she’s at in the next 24.
Hey, she looked a little better.
Kelly Severide: You saw her?
Gabby Dawson: Yeah.
Kelly Severide: They told me no visitors.
Gabby Dawson: I wasn’t a visitor. I was… I was getting examined
                            myself.
Kelly Severide: You’re right. I’m… I’m sorry. Sorry, sorry.
                            How are you doing?
Gabby Dawson: Great, thanks.
Kelly Severide: The thing is, me and Shay had a disagreement right
                            before she went on shift.
Gabby Dawson: Yeah, I know. She asked if she could stay at my
                             place for a while.
Kelly Severide: Yeah. But in the light of things, I think she should
come back home after she’s discharged. I’ll take
                            care of her.
Gabby Dawson: I mean, that’s her call to make. But I’m not really
                            worried about that right now.
Kelly Severide: Of course. Yeah. I just want her to be okay.
Gabby Dawson: Yeah, me too.
                                      [locker door swings open]
                                                  cutscene
Leon Cruz: Yo.
Joe Cruz: What are you doing, waving that thing around in here?
Leon Cruz: Yo, did you read this?
Joe Cruz: Yes.
Leon Cruz: I thought you would have been doing cartwheels.
Yo, when nobody saw him come out that blaze, there
was crazy stories flying everywhere, like he was
                      hiding out somewhere.
This confirms it, bro. Flaco’s dead.
Joe Cruz: I know, Leon.
Leon Cruz: You did this for me.
That’s why you’ve been acting all shook lately, huh?
Yo, we take this to the grave, just me and you.
                      Thank you. Thank you!
                      Me salvaste la vida.
                      So quit trippin’, bro.
                                                    cutscene
Christopher Herrmann: This wedding job I booked, the father of
the bride and I, we hit it off. Anyway,
he’s the CFO of this sewage treatment
                                         plant.
Chief Boden: Really? You’re into sewage now?
Christopher Herrmann: No. Anyway, turns out he’s a family guy,
a really good guy. He has some venture
capital that’s burning a hole in his
pocket, says he might be willing to
invest some start-up cash in a
                                         fleet of limos.
Chief Boden: What’s the catch?
Christopher Herrmann: None. The only hitch is that I invited him
here to the firehouse today to hash
things out. But with everything going
                                          on…
Chief Boden: If Shay gets wind that you screwed up this business
opportunity ‘cause of her, she will kick you in your
                        nuts.
Christopher Herrmann: Yeah, but…
Chief Boden: Go ahead, take the meeting. We need to get back to
                        normal around here.
Christopher Herrmann: I appreciate it, Chief.
Chief Boden: No catch, huh?
Christopher Herrmann: Not unless he tries paying me with
                                         Monopoly money.
                                    [station alert buzzes & sounds]
(Over PA): Truck 81…
Chief Boden: [sighs]
(Over PA): Squad 3, Ambulance 61. Woman trapped from unknown
                  cause.
                                  [indistinct chatter in background]
Lady 1: The ground just collapsed.
Kelly Severide: Okay. Get back. Get back.
(into radio) We got a sinkhole.
Guys, get these cars moved in case of a secondary
                           collapse.
Lady 1: I tried to get close, but the ground started to pour in.
Kelly Severide: She your neighbour?
Lady 1: Our mail lady.
Victim 1 (Mail lady): Help me, please hurry!
Somebody, help me! Help me, please.
Kelly Severide: Lieutenant Kelly Severide, Chicago Fire
Department. We’re gonna work on getting
                            you out. What’s your name?
Victim 1 (Mail lady): Sylvia. I need to get out of here. I… It’s getting
                                  hard to breathe [coughs]
Kelly Severide: Hey, air, struts and shoring, right now.
Matt Casey: Call the Chief.
Firefighter: Got it, Lieutenant.
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): [strained breathing]
                                              Please help me!
Kelly Severide: Is that all we got?
Firefighter: That’s it.
Kelly Severide: That won’t be enough.
                                         [ground collapsing]
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): [screaming & coughing]
Kelly Severide: Get me more boards!
Matt Casey: Grab anything you can get!
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): Please help me [coughing]
                                          [saw buzzing]
Lady 2 (Resident with Fence): Hey!
Christopher Herrmann: Sorry ma’am.
                             [indistinct chatter in background]
                                          [ladder raising]
Matt Casey: Come on.
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): [gasping]
Kelly Severide: Hey, Sylvia, put these on to protect your eyes.
Christopher Herrmann: Up on green.
                                         It’s in.
Chief Boden: Okay, go ahead down. Check the shoring.
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): [coughs]
Kelly Severide: All right, Chief, good to go.
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): [gasping] I can’t breathe.
Matt Casey: Got something for you.
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): I can’t feel anything.
Matt Casey: Here, put this on.
                      Deep breaths, Sylvia.
Kelly Severide: [grunting] Good to go.
Joe Cruz: Here’s the line, Lieutenant.
                                 [ground starts to collapse again]
Kelly Severide: Easy.
Matt Casey: Come on.
                      Good.
Kelly Severide: All right, get her out of here.
Chief Boden: Pull her out. Pull her out now.
                                               [men grunting]
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): [cries out]
                                           [ground rumbling]
Kelly Severide: Let’s get out of here!
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): Oh!
Matt Casey: Let’s move.
Christopher Herrmann: Let her in.
Chief Boden: I got her.
Victim 1 (Mail lady/Sylvia): [crying] Thank you.
Christopher Herrmann: All right.
Chief Boden: Way to go.
                       Good job.
                                                    cutscene
Doctor: Eye, motor, verbal responses have improved steadily in the
last two hours. We still have to monitor her closely, see
              how she progresses.
Gabby Dawson: Hey.
Leslie Shay: Hey. You’re working?
Gabby Dawson: Well, you know, with you faking it, someone’s got
                             to step up.
                                          [both chuckles lightly]
Gabby Dawson: How you feeling?
Leslie Shay: Oh, a little beat up, but I’m all right. Be a little while
before I see the ambo, I guess.
Gabby Dawson: You really scared me, girl. Don’t do it again, okay?
Leslie Shay: So you were telling me, last thing I remember, about
your date with Casey. It didn’t go so well or
                      something.
Gabby Dawson: Oh, no. Jeez. The date was a disaster. And Casey
                             kissed me on the cheek.
Leslie Shay: Oh… listen, it’s not too late to switch teams.
Gabby Dawson: You already moved in. Let’s take it slow.
                                         [knocks on door]
Leslie Shay: Hey.
                      Oh.
Kelly Severide: You’re up.
Leslie Shay: Yeah.
Kelly Severide: [chuckles]
                                         [kissing sound]
Leslie Shay: Hi. They’re so beautiful. Thank you.
Kelly Severide: Be good to get you home. The place feels really
empty without hipster music blasting from your
                            room [laughs]
Leslie Shay: I’m still gonna stay with Dawson, Kelly. I think the way
                     we left it is best.
Kelly Severide: Let me know if you hear any more updates.
Gabby Dawson: Are you high?
Kelly Severide: What?
Gabby Dawson: You’ve got pinpoint pupils.
Kelly Severide: Are you out of your mind?
Gabby Dawson: You didn’t answer the question.
Kelly Severide: I’m worried about Shay. Is that okay with you?
                                                   cutscene
Matt Casey: Herrmann, relax.
Christopher Herrmann: I can’t, okay? I got a lot riding on this.
Me and Cindy, we need 5 grand more to
make the down payment so we can move
                                         the hell out.
Mouch: I thought you got along with your father-in-law.
Christopher Herrmann: You want to drastically alter your
                                         relationship with your father-in-law?
Move in with him. Used to be that I was a
fireman hero. Now he treats me like I’m
                                          Mr. Frickin’ Belvedere.
Matt Casey: You’re putting too much pressure on yourself.
Capp: Herrmann, there’s a Lance Ebbott out front for you.
Christopher Herrmann: He’s punctual.
                                         Mr. Ebbott.
Tumblr media
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): Lance, please.
Christopher Herrmann: Lance, good to see you.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): You too.
Christopher Herrmann: Fantastic wedding the other day.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): Oh, well, thank you.
Christopher Herrmann: Your daughter looked lovely. So did your
                                         wife.
Not that I was staring or anything.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): [chuckles] You’re very kind to say so.
So uh, I looked it over… or rather, my
business manager did. And it looks good.
Just one last step, and then I’m in.
Take me for a ride after your shift. Show me
how the business operates, or more
                                        importantly, how you operate.
                                        Relationships, trust, loyalty, that’s what’s
                                        important to me.
Christopher Herrmann: As it is with me, sir.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): Lance.
Christopher Herrmann: Lance.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): See you at 7?
Christopher Herrmann: Yes, sir. See you… Lance, see you at 7.
                                         [whisper shouts] Yeah!
                                              cutscene
                            [train horn blowing in distance]
                                [knocking on car window]
Man 2: Can I help you with something?
Joe Cruz: What?
Man 2: Can I help you with something? This is private property.
Joe Cruz: Where am I? What is this place?
Man 2: Gary.
Joe Cruz: Gary?
Man 2: Yes, sir.
Joe Cruz: Indiana?
                                               cutscene
Gabby Dawson: [exhales]
Matt Casey: Hey.
Gabby Dawson: Hey.
Matt Casey: So Shay’s good, huh?
Gabby Dawson: Well, she still got some recovery left to go, but we
                             definitely got lucky.
Matt Casey: What about you?
Should probably have taken a couple days off.
Gabby Dawson: Right. Like you would have.
Matt Casey: Listen, uh… the Christmas party. If I seemed
                      distracted, it’s because… I guess I was. There’s some
stuff I’m dealing with, stuff I gotta figure out.
Gabby Dawson: Well, you know you can talk to me anytime you
want, right? About any of that…stuff.
                                   [station alarm buzzes & blares]
(Over PA): Ambulance 61, difficulty breathing. 800 East Cottage
                  Grove.
Gabby Dawson: I hope it works out… whatever it is.
If we set a shift record for calls, it’s on you,
                             you know.
Peter Mills: So you’re setting me up to be the firehouse jinx?
Gabby Dawson: I’m just saying I’m counting.
I’m not one to shy away from labelling folks.
Peter Mills: [chuckles]
                                          [knocks on door]
Gabby Dawson: CFD. Anybody there?
Peter Mills: Whoa, there’s a woman on the floor in there.
Gabby Dawson: All right, we got to get in. Break it.
Peter Mills: All right.
                                         [glass smashing]
                                  [dog barking & growling]
Peter Mills: All right. Here. Shh, shh.
                                               [barking]
Peter Mills: Okay, good, good… good poochie.
                                               [barking]
Peter Mills: Wait! Wait!
                     [sighs]
Gabby Dawson: [sighs]
Peter Mills: Oh man.
                                               [barking]
Peter Mills: That woman is in bad shape. We need to get back out
                     there.
Gabby Dawson: (into radio) This is Ambulance 61. We need a
                             company for manpower and CPD.
Dispatcher: Copy that, 61. Sending backup. We’ll notify...
Peter Mills: Here, take this out of the wrapper.
                                     [dog snarling & barking]
Gabby Dawson: What?
Peter Mills: Okay.
                     Here goes.
                                       [snarling & barking]
Gabby Dawson: [chuckles]
                            [clears throat]
Peter Mills: [sniffing] It smells nice. It’s, like, a… a vanilla candle or
                     something.
Gabby Dawson: Uh, that… that’s my body lotion.
                                             [dog panting]
                                           [dog whimpers]
Peter Mills: Yeah, we’re good.
Gabby Dawson: You got her ID, medical info?
Peter Mills: Yes. We are all good.
Gabby Dawson: Just don’t miss any turns on the way to the ER.
Peter Mills: Ha. Funny.
                                                cutscene
Christie: This thing always catches.
Matt Casey: You should look into getting it fixed.
Christie: Yeah, unfortunately Jim’s dangerous with tools.
Matt Casey: [chuckles]
Christie: If only I knew a contractor.
Matt Casey: Thanks for having me.
I wanted to talk to you about something.
Christie: Let me guess.
Matt Casey: Just wondering if maybe you’d be willing to dial it back
                      this time.
Christie: This coming from you or her?
Matt Casey: From me. She’d be on parole. There would still be
                      restrictions in place.
Christie: [scoffs] She could’ve asked for help. She could’ve moved
far away from him. But she didn’t. She killed him.
Matt Casey: Yes, I realised that, Christie. I was there. You were in a
campus dorm on the other side of the country. I heard
all the things he said. I saw him belittle her…
                       break her.
                       She paid the price.
Listen, 15 years ago, I’m not having this conversation.
                       Now I am.
Christie: Nothing excuses what she did.
Matt Casey: I’m not asking you to forget.
                                                  cutscene
                                            [kissing sounds]
Renee Royce: Mm…
Kelly Severide: Damn, I’m glad you’re back in town.
Renee Royce: Yeah, me too.
Kelly Severide: [chuckles]
Renee Royce: I was in Madrid.
Kelly Severide: How often do you have to go there?
Renee Royce: This was for an interview, actually, for a, um,
                          promotion.
Kelly Severide: You taking it?
Renee Royce: I am.
Kelly Severide: When?
Renee Royce: They need me there next week.
Kelly Severide: Ah.
Renee Royce: You know, it’s funny, ‘cause we’ve only dated a
couple times, but it just feels like longer,
                           doesn’t it?
Kelly Severide: Yeah.
Renee Royce: My stomach’s been in knots just thinking about
                         telling you.
[exhales] Do you get any vacation time?
Kelly Severide: A little, here and there.
Renee Royce: So then, would you think about coming out to visit
                         me?
Kelly Severide: Yeah.
Renee Royce: Now my stomach’s back in knots again.
Kelly Severide: Hey…
                                            [kissing sound]
Kelly Severide: Congrats. Seriously.
And yes, I will come visit you… when I can.
Renee Royce: You will?
So then, should I pop open a bottle of champagne
                           to celebrate?
Kelly Severide: Absolutely.
Renee Royce: Yeah?
Kelly Severide: Yeah.
                                            [kissing sounds]
Renee Royce: Okay.
Kelly Severide: [sighs]

Lady 3: Hey, hey, where you… get back here.
              Where you going?
Lady 4: He’s going away.
Lady 3: Yeah, aw.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): This is good. This is good. You good?
Christopher Herrmann: Great.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): This is great. So really great.
Christopher Herrmann: Okay.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): So what I’m thinking is that, once a week or
every two weeks, we go on a run, you
know? We, uh, meet clients, we drum up
new business, and that’ll be our cover
story. And then we, you know, have a
                                       good time.
Christopher Herrmann: Sounds good to me.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): Good. So, uh, give me, like, ten minutes…
Christopher Herrmann: Uh huh.
Man 1 (Lance Ebbott): And then we’ll be out of here, all right?
                                     [indistinct chatter]
                                  [siren in the distance]
                                           cutscene
Gabby Dawson: My family had a German Shepherd. They are great
                            dogs.
                            I’m not scared of them.
Peter Mills: Please, please. You screamed like a girl.
Gabby Dawson: I am a girl. What’s your excuse?
                            Hey, Cruz, you okay?
Joe Cruz: Yeah.
Gabby Dawson: You sure? You look like you’re gonna throw up.
                                [Mills & Dawson chuckles]
Peter Mills: She literally almost hit the ceiling when the dog lunged
                     at us.
Matt Casey: Oh yeah?
Peter Mills: Yeah.
Gabby Dawson: He… he jumped higher than I did.
Peter Mills: No, I jumped higher to make myself bigger. Like, when
you encounter a grizzly bear in the wild, you… you…
Gabby Dawson: That survival tip doesn’t even make any sense.
All you’re  doing is, you’re standing there, making
yourself a bigger serving size for the bear or
whatever. Where I’m from, you haul your ass out
                             of there.
Peter Mills: Oh really?
Dawson & Mills: [laughs]
                                                [knocks on door]
Matt Casey: Hey, Cruz.
Joe Cruz: Lieutenant, I have to talk to you about something.
Matt Casey: Okay.
                                                   [door shuts]
Joe Cruz: My brother, Leon, he might be a screw-up, but he’s got a
                  really good heart, you know?
Matt Casey: Yeah, of course.
Joe Cruz: And… and these… these scumbags, the Insane Kings,
you know, he’s nothing like ‘em. But… but they got their
hooks in him, and they weren’t gonna let him go.
When… when I was in that building, I was checking
floors. And there he was, you know, Flaco. He was…
Matt Casey: Let me stop you right there.
If you’re about to say what I think you are, then you
and me can walk right out this door, down to the
                      police station.
The second option is, you sleep on this one more
time. Think about why you did it or didn’t do it,
‘cause at this point, I have no idea ‘cause you’ve
                         told me nothing.
Sure as hell sounds like your brother got a new lease
                         on life.
Next shift, come to me. And either we go to the cops,
or you shake my hand and say, good morning, and
                        we go about our business.
                        Understand?
Joe Cruz: I understand.
                                             [door shuts]
                                               cutscene
Christopher Herrmann: I really appreciate it. We’ll speak soon.
                                         Okay. Bye.
Chief Boden: Who’s that?
Christopher Herrmann: The business manager for that, uh, investor
                                         guy.
                                         He’s in.
Chief Boden: You’re kidding me. How much?
Christopher Herrmann: Full boat. 30 grand.
Otis Zvonecek: Dude!
Mouch: Let the ink dry first. Let the ink dry first. These things have a
              way of going south.
Christopher Herrmann: He already wired the money into my bank
                                         account.
Mouch: Well, egg on my face. Congrats.
Chief Boden: You and Cindy can get that house now.
Christopher Herrmann: Looks like it.
Chief Boden: Hey, go on. Show ‘em.
Nice little two-storey over in the West Loop.
                        Go ahead, show them.
Gabby Dawson: Oh, man, Herrmann, congratulations.
Otis Zvonecek: Wow.
Gabby Dawson: That’s awesome.
                                               [cheering]
Gabby Dawson: Cindy’s gonna flip.
Christopher Herrmann: Yep.
Peter Mills: Tray?
Gabby Dawson: [clears throat]
Kelly Severide: You got a sec?
                            Um… I need help.
Gabby Dawson: You got it.
                                   [station alarm buzzes & blares]
(Over PA): Truck 81, Squad 3, Battalion 25, Ambulance 61. Traffic
                   accident, University Village Marketplace.
                                   [horns honking, sirens blaring]
Man 3: He drove right through… through everything.
Lady 5 (in hat): He hit that child. Didn’t even stop.
Crowd: Get him out of there.
              Come on.
Chief Boden: Crowd control, before they kill that man.
Severide, get your men on that storefront glass.
Kelly Severide: Hadley, Capp, let’s go.
Joe Cruz: Back up. Back up, please. Back up!
Matt Casey: Back up.
Man 4 (In beanie): Come on.
Matt Casey: Sir, you okay?
                                        [glass breaking]
Victim 2 (Guy on ground): [grunts]
Kelly Severide: All right boys. Glass is cleared. Treat the victim.
Gabby Dawson: Here we go. Sit down.
Firefighters: Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Hey, hey, get back. Come on.
Victim 3 (Driver): It was a shortcut. It’s the way I always go. I didn’t
                             see ‘em.
Gabby Dawson: Okay.
Victim 3 (Driver): I didn’t see ‘em.
Gabby Dawson: How much did you have to drink today, sir?
Victim 3 (Driver): I think a bottle.
Peter Mills: A bottle?
Man 4 (In beanie): That man is drunk off his ass. Look!
Matt Casey: Stand back and let the paramedics do their job.
Peter Mills: Stay still. Come on, stay still.
                     Calm down.
Gabby Dawson: Severe ataxia. What did you have to drink in that
                             bottle, sir?
Victim 3 (Driver): Since we were playing football all day at school…
Peter Mills: Playing football at school? You taking us down memory
                     lane?
Victim 3 (Driver): The coach said drink a lot of water, keep up your
                              energy.
                              What’s the score?
Police Officer: We’ll need a sobriety test from the drunk.
Man 4 (In beanie): I cannot believe this, man.
                                         [crowd roaring]
Firefighters: Hey, hey, hey! Hey!
                      Come on, please.
Gabby Dawson: You smell anything on his breath?
Peter Mills: No, nothing.
Gabby Dawson: All right, sir, open your eyes wide for me and track
                            my finger, okay?
Crowd: Nothing but a drunk!
Gabby Dawson: He’s not drunk. He’s having a stroke.
Peter Mills: What? Are you sure? I mean, he’s not slurring.
There’s no signs of partial paralysis.
Gabby Dawson: It… it could be at the base of his brain stem.
We got to get him to the hospital right now.
Firefighter: Casey.
Crowd: Let’s kill him!
Matt Casey: Back her up.
Crowd: Why are you helping him for?
Man 4 (In beanie): Why should we move?
Crowd: Yeah, yeah, why?
Matt Casey: Because he needs treatment.
Kelly Severide: All right, everybody, back now!
Man 4 (In beanie): We’re not going anywhere.
Kelly Severide: Back up, or I’ll knock you on your ass.
Matt Casey: Pass me an IV. Sir?
Man 4 (In beanie): What?
Matt Casey: I need your help. We’re short on medics right now.
Man 4 (In beanie): You’re crazy, man.
Matt Casey: Hold this IV bag high in the air to start the flow of
saline. We use it to help the victims.
Man 4 (In beanie): You sure? Man, give me this.
                                Like this?
Matt Casey: Perfect.
All right, back up. Let’s give him some room.
Man 4 (In beanie): Yeah, give me some room, people.
Kelly Severide: Back up for the medics.
Man 4 (In beanie): You heard the man, back up for the medics.
Gabby Dawson: Nice.
Matt Casey: Learned that one from you.
                                                cutscene
Leslie Shay: Seriously? I’m a paramedic.
Doctor: You’re a patient. Wheelchair to the door.
Leslie Shay: Hardass.
                     [groans]
Doctor: Take care of yourself.
Leslie Shay: Yeah, you too.
                      What’s going on?
Gabby Dawson: We have a great plan.
                                                   cutscene
Cindy Herrmann: It was gonna be sound of music, but my mom is
saying the kids are too young for Nazis. I don’t
care if they watch Scarface. They’re occupied,
                              and we’re celebrating.
                              You ready? Christopher, honey?
Oh, no. Did the money not go through?
Christopher Herrmann: No. It went through.
Cindy Herrmann: What’s the matter?
Christopher Herrmann: This guy… he’s not my kind of guy, Cindy.
Cindy Herrmann: Then we’ll give the money back.
Christopher Herrmann: Then there’s no house. Or I got to find
another schmo to invest 30 grand.
Cindy Herrmann: Let’s rent.
I love you so much for working your ass off to get
us a house again, but we just want you home.
Margie, from school, they’re gonna have a
vacancy in their complex next week. We’ll make
                              it our dream home.
Christopher Herrmann: You’re my girl. You know that?
                                               cutscene
Gabby Dawson: Well, I made it for Shay, but she cancelled. So I
figured, why let it go to waste?
Peter Mills: Oh, wow.
Gabby Dawson: And you’re the only friend I have who’d appreciate
the work that went into this meal.
                                              [keys clinking]
Peter Mills: Oh, so this is where the magic happens.
Gabby Dawson: You know it.
                             All right. Juniper-braised short ribs.
Peter Mills: Ooh [sniffs]
Gabby Dawson: And roasted asparagus.
Peter Mills: Damn.
Gabby Dawson: The only thing I didn’t make was dessert.
Peter Mills: Oh, hey, well, I’ll whip something up.
Gabby Dawson: Can you make something to follow this meal?
Peter Mills: Okay, let’s not get too cocky now.
Gabby Dawson: Oh, well, it ain’t being cocky if you can back it up.
Oh, didn’t Peter Mills just say that not too long
                             ago?
Peter Mills: Damn straight I did, but you watch and learn. Okay?
Gabby Dawson: [chuckles] Okay.
                                             cutscene
                                      [knocks on door]
Christie: Hi, Matt.
Matt Casey: Hey.
Christie: Come on in.
Matt Casey: Uh, I just wanted to talk to you about the mom thing
                      first.
Christie: Okay.
Matt Casey: [sighs] I realise that one of our problems is we don’t
talk. And I wanted to tell you, whether or not you’re
speaking up against mom at the hearing…
Christie: I will be.
Matt Casey: Then so am I. And I’m going to argue that she should
be paroled. And I respect you and… and where
you’re coming from, and I hope you can do the same
                      with me.
Christie: Can you wait here for a sec?
Matt Casey: Yeah.
Christie: Violet’s school picture. I was going to give it to you after
                dinner.
                                             [door shuts]
                                               cutscene
Leslie Shay: [laughs] “An epic arctic hurricane, all-time low king
crab supply, and two mutinies aboard ship.”
Shay & Severide: [laughs]
Leslie Shay: Awesome.
See, this is why we’re best friends. Kendra, sweet as
she is, she gets me Pride and Prejudice.
Kelly Severide: Nah.
Leslie Shay: Yeah. I mean, get to know me already.
                      What?
And mint chocolate chip ice cream?
Kelly Severide: [chuckles]
Leslie Shay: I mean, what are we talking about here?
Kelly Severide: Welcome home.
Leslie Shay: You know I’m gonna be with you every step of the way,
                      right, Kelly?
Kelly Severide: I’m meeting with the surgeon next week.
They say they can get the whole procedure on the
books soon after. And I got to get Boden involved.
And… the painkillers… I’m gonna go cold turkey.
But if I feel like I’m gonna slip on a banana peel,
the union has an employee assistance program for
substance abuse. Dawson looked into it
Leslie Shay: I am so damn proud of you, Kelly.
And if I were straight, I’d throw the biggest hump into
                     you right now [laughs]
Kelly Severide: [sighs] I really don’t know what I would’ve done if
                           anything happened to you.
Leslie Shay: [sighs] I felt the exact same way.
                                         [kissing sounds]
Leslie Shay: All right.
Kelly Severide: All right, all right. All right.
Leslie Shay: [sighs]
                                             cutscene
Gabby Dawson: I feel like going to med school’s a way to push
                            myself further, you know?
Peter Mills: Yeah.
Gabby Dawson: Take it up a notch.
But that’s all on hold until my finances improve.
Peter Mills: See, you… you did take it up a notch today on shift,
calling out that stroke. I mean, you take it up every
day right where you are, so…
Gabby Dawson: [chuckles] I don’t know.
It’s funny though, the things that… the things that
you keep in your head and the things you forget.
Peter Mills: Like what?
Gabby Dawson: [chuckles] Don’t laugh. Sometimes I have a hard
time remembering all the bones in the body…
                             basic EMT.
                                             [both chuckles]
Peter Mills: I don’t think I could name them all either [chuckles]
Gabby Dawson: You don’t have an excuse. It should be fresh in
                             your mind, Peter Mills.
Peter Mills: Well, let’s find out.
                     Like, what is that?
Gabby Dawson: Uh, radius.
Peter Mills: And that?
Gabby Dawson: Ulna. Right? Ul… ulna.
Peter Mills: Good. What is that?
Gabby Dawson: Sternum.
Peter Mills: It’s actually more the… costal margin.
                     What about this?
                                          [kissing sounds]
                                      [cell phone vibrating]

Definitions:
Respirations of ten = A person’s respiratory rate is the number of breaths you take per minute. A normal respiration rate for an adult at rest is 12 to 20 breaths per minute. A respiration rate under 12 or over 25 breaths per minute while resting is considered abnormal
CBC = A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test that measures red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood platelets (cells that help your blood clot). It is one of the most common tests ordered by doctors. A CBC can provide a quick snapshot of your overall health.
Moderate traumatic brain injury = A term used when a person experiences changes in brain function for longer than a few minutes following trauma. Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head or body. More serious traumatic brain injury can result in bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage to the brain. These injuries can result in long-term complications or death.
MRI = Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs in the body.
DUI = Driving under the influence (while impaired by alcohol or other drugs).
ICP catheter = Intracranial Pressure (ICP) monitoring uses a device placed inside the head. The monitor senses the pressure inside the skull and sends measurements to a recording device. The intraventricular catheter is the most accurate monitoring method. To insert an intraventricular catheter, a hole is drilled through the skull. The catheter is inserted through the brain into the lateral ventricle. This area of the brain contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is a liquid that protects the brain and spinal cord. The intraventricular catheter can also be used to drain fluid out through the catheter.
Me salvaste la vida = “You saved my life” in Spanish
CFO = Chief Financial Officer
Air, struts and shoring = Technical rescue teams use a variety of equipment to support collapsed structures or trenches and move heavy debris to gain access to confined void spaces. Rescue struts are commonly used in conjunction with the air bags to support the debris. In a trench rescue situation where one or both sides of the trench have collapsed, the air bags can be used to backfill the void spaces behind the shoring panels as they are being set in place. The shoring panels will be held in place against the air bag by rescue struts to protect the victim and rescuers.
Pinpoint pupils = Pinpoint pupils are pupils that remain very small even in bright light (under normal conditions, pupils change size to let in the right amount of light). They can signify many issues, including drug use, poisoning, haemorrhage, or Horner syndrome (caused by a tumour or stroke or damage to the central trunk of the brain – the brainstem)
Mr. Belvedere = It is an American sitcom where the title character, Mr Belvedere takes a job as a butler with an American family.
Ataxia = Ataxia is a degenerative disease of the nervous system. Many symptoms of Ataxia mimic those of being drunk, such as slurred speech, stumbling, falling, and incoordination. These symptoms are caused by damage to the cerebellum, the part of the brain that is responsible for coordinating movement.
Schmo = A stupid person
EMT = Emergency Medical Technician
Radius = The radius or radial bone is one of the two large bones of the forearm, the other being the ulna. It extends from the lateral side of the elbow to the thumb side of the wrist and runs parallel to the ulna. The radius is thicker than the ulna.
Ulna = The ulna is a long bone (slightly longer than radius) found in the forearm that stretches from the elbow to the smallest finger, and when in anatomical position, is found on the medial side of the forearm. It runs parallel to the radius.
Sternum = The sternum or breastbone is a long flat bone located in the central part of the chest. It connects to the ribs via cartilage and forms the front of the rib cage, thus helping to protect the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels from injury.
Costal margin = The costal margin is the lower edge of the chest (thorax) formed by the bottom edge of the rib cage. Sometimes referred to as the costal arch, the costal margin in the medial margin formed by the seventh to tenth ribs.

hands down, most powerful line in the whole episode.
it’s an odd form of vengeance, saving the man that attacked you multiple times from the release of death
that’s what it would’ve been tho
a release
he would’ve died, and he wouldn’t of had to pay for any of his actions
but instead, josh saved his sorry ass
so he gets to pay for this in the land of the living
the best revenge, actually
and, josh saved a life
he’s worthwhile

i may or may not have been like buck in the bank episode when he said ‘i’m some confused, can you start over’
...ahem....
“wait....you didn’t round her up too?”
ok listen....
while i don’t condone stealing and and the extreme amount of violence they used,
i do condone outsmarting men that think less of you because you are a woman
you are a boss tiffany, and i’m actually kind of sad you got caught
“tiffany was the real mastermind” can i just.....
*BLASTS BOSS BITCH FROM THE ROOFTOPS CAUSE WOMEN OWNED THIS EPISODE! THEY WERE SO DAMN BADASS*

jake f’ed up the other plan too lmaoo
like i said, if it was all women, they would’ve pulled this off

Watching everyone rushing to make food and set the table couldn’t be more painful. Lance felt like he was falling apart and he couldn’t show it. He couldn’t bring himself to disappoint them.
He’d rehearsed so many times. As he worked on his mom’s car, as he showered, as he got dressed, and as he watched. But it never made it easier. Not once, did it feel like he could tell them without bile rising up in his throat.
His little cousins were running around the adults, being ushered out to the front yard, but they were too hyped to listen. Suddenly, his cousin Lily shrieked and began bawling. “Guys, give her back her doll,” Lance scolded the two twins that were her older brothers. “You know how she gets, and unless you want me to tell Tia Carla what you did-”
“Ugh, Lance you’re the same as before you went to college,” Jose grumbled, tossing back the doll.
“Just go back to college,” Jesus, the other, muttered, sticking his tongue out. They ran out, screaming after their other cousins.
Lance sighed and mumbled, “Wish I could, buddy.” He went to be sure the kids weren’t fighting. The boys were running, and the girls were playing with dolls. Until Lance’s brother, Miguel, decided to pull their cousin Rosa’s pigtail and began a gender war of tag. He shook his head and turned back to look at the house. His tios were drinking, claiming to toast to them. His tias and his mom were cooking, gossiping in Spanish. His Papo was asleep on the couch with a cup of soda in his hand. His buela was cleaning, setting out a new mantel for the table.
It was too much. It was way too much. Despite the humid heat, Lance left the house and went to the back where the dogs were. At his Papo’s house, they had a chicken coop. Lance hated those chickens. He could still hear the shrieks of laughter and anger from the kids in the front, but from where he stood, Lance could close his eyes and pretend that it was a normal day. That he wasn’t about to drop the worst news in months to his family. That he wasn’t about to explain what a failure he was, and how he didnt deserve anything they were doing for him.
He could pretend he had never gone to college, that it was last summer and he was filled with hope to envision all the possibilities the future would bring. He was still Lance, the jokester, the fun cousin, the fun brother, the troublemaking son, the smart one.
“Lance!” one of his tias called. “Your friend is here!” Lance frowned and went inside, surprised to see Keith at his front door with his tios and tias and mother and buela surrounding him, inviting him, offering things, asking him questions.
“Oh God,” he muttered. He interceded and made his family back off. “Come on. I’ll introduce you, but you don’t have to remember.” He gestured to his uncles. “That’s my tio Angel, my tio Selso, and my tio Ramon. Tio Angel is my mom’s brother. Tios, this is… my friend, Keith.” Keith waved and shook each of their hands, refusing the beer they offered. “That’s my Papo, you met him.”
“Won’t that glass fall?” he questioned.
“No. He always falls asleep with a cup of something in his hand.” He pointed. “That’s Buela Prudencia. I call her Buela.” He took Keith to the kitchen and pointed. “Mom at the stove. Tia Carla’s dicing, she’s the restaurant owner. Tia Lourdes. They’re Mom’s sisters.” He coughed and gestured to Keith. “This is my friend Keith. Please don’t smother him.”
“Cabron,” his tia Lourdes said with a swat of his arm. “Hi Keith, it’s so nice to meet you.” Keith smiled nervously and nodded. “I hope you’re hungry.”
“Very,” he said.
Lance hurried him out and pointed to the kids. “My sisters, Emily, Jackie, and Alexia. My brother Jorge. I call him Bobo. The twins, Jose and Jesus belong to tia Carla with my cousin Lily in the pigtails. The other kids are tia Lourdes’ kids. Rosa, Diana, the girls. Ricky and Victor, the boys. And the other little boy there is my tio Angel’s kid, Saulo.”
“That’s… a lot of kids.”
“And it’s just the little ones. I have older cousins, but I pretend they don’t exist.” He shrugged and gestured him back inside. “Dogs are in the back. Quique and Luna.” He sat down on the bench outside. “So… why are you here?” he asked.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean…. You don’t remember me from high school. You don’t know me at all, but you agreed to have dinner with my family. All I did was wait your table and fix your car. Why are you here, what do you want?”
Keith frowned and crossed his arms as he looked out at the road. “Food, I guess. Look, I got invited, so I came. You want me to go?” He almost said yes. But he wasn’t sure how to explain that to his family either. Besides, if Keith stayed, then maybe Lance wouldn’t have to tell his family he dropped out. “Do you?” he asked.
Lance looked at him and felt his cheeks warm. “No. Not really.” Keith took a breath and nodded as he slumped in his seat and kicked at the ground. “I’m just… dealing with stuff right now.”
“It’s cool,” he said. “You want to talk about it?”
Before he could answer, his tia Carla came barging out and screaming. “Ya esta la comida! Vengan a comer!” Keith and Lance had both cringed as she went back in.
Keith looked over at him. “I take it dinner’s ready?” Lance nodded and nudged him before standing. They walked in and Lance found himself sitting across from Keith. The kids were on one end of the table and his aunts and uncles sat around him. At the head of the table were Papo and Buela.
Everyone began serving themselves from the food available in large dishes along the center of the table. Before they could all really dig in, Lance’s mother stopped them. “Wait, wait! No toquen esa comida, werquitos!” The kids stopped midbite. “We can’t forget who this is for.” Lance gulped and felt his chest constrict. “Mijo,” she said proudly. “My little boy, all grown up. Back from college. The first of all of us to go. You’re leading a better life, mijo, which is all I could’ve ever wanted for you. You’re the best role model for your siblings and your cousins. And I love you so, so much.” Her voice broke and Lance already felt his tears spilling over. And she wrapped him into a hug and smoothed down his hair. “I know, I know, I’m sorry. I know you hate when I get like this, but I’m just so proud of you.” She hugged him tightly and Lance was grateful because if she hadn’t, everyone would’ve seen how hard he was shaking. “Don’t cry. We don’t want your friend to get uncomfortable.” She kissed his forehead and sat back down. “Okay, eat!” she said with a teary smile.
Everyone lunged for the food except for Lance. He was trying to stop the guilt from eating him. It took a swift kick from Keith under the table for him to start piling food onto his plate. He picked at his food and ate as everyone around him started their questions.
“So what are you studying? Will it get you a good paying job?”
“When do you graduate? When can we get tickets?”
“Is it true that the parties are crazy?”
“Remember, you have to stay focused on school, no girls.” His tia Carla nudged him and winked on the other side of him, as did his mother. The women in the family were far more understanding.
“I just knew you’d get this far, mijo,” Buela said. She didn’t talk much, but when she did, everyone listened. “You’re going to be somebody, Lance,” she said certainly, breaking Lance’s heart further. “Dime, were your teachers impressed? You were number three in school here. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were number one when you graduate.”
“And speaking of graduating, we need to start saving if everyone’s going to go.”
“What about after graduation? What are you gonna do? Tell me you’re not just gonna live here again. You got out for a reason,” one of his uncles said.
Lance kept his mouth full of food he couldn’t eat just to keep from answering. “What about you, Keith? Do you go to college?” his mother asked, finally removing the focus from him.
“Uh, yeah- yes, ma’am. I go to the community college. I want to transfer to a university for my junior year. Community college is just cheaper right now, which is what I need.”
“Lance here is at a private college,” his papo bragged. “He got scholarships.”
“That’s really good,” Keith said with a sincere smile.
“Una porra pa’ el futuro licenciado!” A cheer for the future graduate.
“Stop,” Lance choked.
“A la vio, a la vao!”
“Stop,” he said a little louder. But he couldn’t compete with his family’s roar.
“A la bim-bom- ba! Lance! Lance!”
“I got kicked out!” he shouted, standing, silencing them. He stared at his plate, unable to breathe. “I’m not in college,” he croaked. “I messed up. I’m just another drop out.” He swallowed and felt his tears slide down his face. “I’m sorry.”
He turned away before he could break completely, before the shouting could start, before his mother’s or his buela’s crying could start. He couldn’t look at any of them. He left the house and prayed that no one followed him. He sat on the steps and felt sobs rack his body.
He hadn’t even heard when someone walked out behind him, until they were sitting beside him. “Want to go somewhere?” Keith asked.
Lance wiped his nose with the back of his hand. “Why are you here?” he hissed. “Just go.”
It was quiet for a moment. Then, “I remember you. From school. You were the guy that pantsed Coach Reyes.” Lance shut his eyes and scowled. “And then you cried for a half hour outside of Principal Miller’s office. But when you got called in, you stopped, and you took a breath and you went in. You were in there almost all period. Then you came out, eyes red, smiling. I’d have thought you were high if your nose hadn’t been running.” Lance looked over at him and furrowed his eyebrows. Keith looked at him. “I was in the office that day. I was an office aide and… I guess you hadn’t seen me. But I’d heard of you, and you’d never been in the office before so….” Keith scooted closer. “I’d always wanted to talk to you, but… you were so smart I didn’t think I could without sounding stupid. You just… you had your life made. Teachers respected you. I was the kid teachers glared at because they thought the phone ringing was mine. It was theirs.”
Lance scoffed and shook his head. “Why would you want to talk to me?” he muttered.
“It seemed like you were the only one who wasn’t trying to get laid or high. You were one of the few nice enough with actual goals in your life.”
They heard the increase of shouting inside and muffled arguing. “Where should we go?” Lance asked, unable to sit there and listen to his family fall apart because of him. Keith twirled his keys and nudged him as he stood and walked to his car.
Lance followed without looking back and slid into the passenger seat.
**
Keith drove with ease. One hand on the steering wheel, the other resting on the door as he chewed on his nails. He leaned back, his head against the window. “So, this is a stupid question, but… why didn’t you tell them?” he asked once they’d driven nowhere for a while.
Lance hugged himself and rubbed his head. “You heard them. I was the one who got to leave, first-generation student, I…. I was the role model. And then I went and fucked it up.”
“How did that happen?” he asked. There was no judgement in his voice, no pity. Just curiosity.
“I couldn’t keep up. Aside from scholarships, I had to work for the money. I kept missing work, which was fine at first… but after a month, my professors weren’t so sure I was being honest. So I started slipping. And then I lost my scholarships and… I couldn’t keep going without offering the devil my soul.” He leaned against the window. “I dropped out in March. And I’ve been crashing with different friends, working to pay them back for letting me stay, and pretending I was still in college. I wanted to tell them, but… I was so fucking scared. I don’t want to disappoint them. I didn’t want them to know that all my dreams were for nothing.”
“Dude,” Keith interrupted. “You talk like… like you can’t try again. Get more scholarships and get in another if not the same college. Write a killer essay about why you fucked up before and get back in. Online classes. You’re not a deadbeat or a failure for messing up. You’re only a failure if you don’t bother trying again.” Lance stared at him and sighed. “You can’t give up on all your dreams just because it got shitty. That’s when you fight most, and prove you deserve to get what you want. It’s not gonna get handed to you all wrapped in a nice bow.”
“Oh what you think that’s how life is? You think I’m making excuses?” he shouted at him. “You think I haven’t had to fight all my life for people to take me seriously? Everyone expected me to join a gang or knock some chick up- thank God I like boys too, it kept my mom from freaking anytime I dated- or to just inherit the stupid shop or the fucking restaurant, okay. Everyone just expects my life to be this, to be here, in this shitty part of Houston no one gives a shit about and where people show up dead in a ditch for Univision to broadcast on!” He ran a hand through his hair and felt the anger make his limbs shake. “I had to fight to stay in advanced classes in each shitty low-grade public school I went to, I had to fight to be in enough extracurriculars while still getting home in time to watch all those kids, help them with homework, feed them, and still get my own done. I didn’t whine and bitch when I had three hours of sleep before a final. I didn’t care that my dad ran off when I was starting high school and left my mom with all those kids on her own, because I knew I could step up. I’m not excusing my fuck ups with my life, okay? So don’t you dare make me seem like I’m playing the victim, Keith. Don’t you dare.”
It was quiet for a while and then Keith started laughing. Lance stared at him incredulously, but Keith just kept laughing and shaking his head. They’d parked at a What-A-Burger and the lights reflected of his violet eyes as he laughed. “I’m sorry,” he finally said through a chuckle. “It’s just…. I didn’t realize I’d wake this ferocious beast just by telling you to fight for what you want.” Lance scowled and looked away. “Hey.” He felt Keith’s hand on his arm. “I wasn’t painting you as the victim. I just… you sounded defeated. And I wanted to show you that you still had fight left in you. And you obviously do.” Lance furrowed his eyebrows and Keith smiled at him. “You messed up. Fine. So try again. This was your first try. Not every kid works a bunch while going to college their first year.”
Lance took a breath and nodded. He let his head fall back against the seat and shook his head. “I just… I can’t go back, knowing that they’ll look at me like….” He couldn’t even put it into words. But it made him want to cry nonetheless. “I disappointed them, Keith. I let them down. And I hid it for a long time, how are they going to forgive me?”
Keith bit his lip and shrugged. “It’ll be rough for a bit, yeah. But… based on what I saw? They love you so fucking much, it’s crazy. They’ll forgive you. They’ll help you. They’ll understand. They’ll be hurt you didn’t tell them, but… they won’t shut you out. They won’t hate you.” Keith let him mull over that for a while until Lance was ready to go back.
Instead, Lance looked over and asked, “Why’d you pretend you didn’t know me if you did?”
Keith seemed shocked by the question. His eyebrows went up and he looked over at Lance with his mouth half-open. He grimaced and scratched his neck. “It took me a moment to place you. You were usually really loud and… obnoxious if I’m honest.” Lance scoffed. “You’re quieter. I know why now, but…. I didn’t realize it was you until I brought back the tip. And then… I just didn’t bring it up.”
“So you remember me as the guy that pantsed the coach then cried about it in the principal’s office,” Lance said with a scoff.
“No,” he answered, sounding shocked. “No, I…. I remember you as the guy who knew how to get what he wanted. You were crying, but… you managed to convince the principal not to give you a punishment for that. And you apologized to Coach too. Lance… I remember you as the guy with the determined blue eyes and easygoing smile that never took no for an answer and owned up to his actions.” Lance gulped and stared at Keith, feeling the familiar flutter in his stomach he used to get back in high school around him.
“Oh,” he said weakly. They both looked out at the diner and seemed to grow smaller in the silence. Lance’s heart was beating fast, and he suddenly never wanted Keith to go away. He knew what to say, and how to make him see things differently. And Lance hadn’t met someone like that in a long time.
“Do you… want to get food?” Keith asked softly.
Lance shook his head, suddenly self-conscious and nervous. “No…. I think I should go home. I can’t run forever.” Keith nodded and started driving back.
When they reached his house, he parked and asked, “Want me to get out with you?”
“No. It’s fine. They’re my family, so I should… deal with them. Besides, half of it might be Spanish and then I’d lose you.” Keith laughed and shrugged.
“Maybe you can teach me, then.” Lance bit back a smile at the idea of seeing Keith again if only to teach him Spanish.
“Sounds like a plan, Mullet,” he said. “Thanks.” Keith nodded and Lance took a deep breath before he walked into the house again.
“Where have you been, carajo!” his tia Lourdes hissed, pinching his shoulder as soon as he walked in. Lance yelped, and rubbed his arm as everyone else came in.
“There he is, the non-college boy,” one of his cousins teased.
“Too good to be a worker like the rest of us, or what?” his tio Selso said. “Running out the door como una marica.” Lance winced and was grateful when his tia Lourdes yanked his ear and scolded him.
“Lance,” his mother said tiredly, shutting everyone up. “What happened?”
Gathering strength, he began to explain how he ended up getting kicked out of school. He explained it all with no excuses, solely facts and kept talking even when his mother’s tears began.
“So you just stayed at your friend’s like some kind of beggar?” she cried. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because I didn’t want to let you down!”
“Oh, that worked out great, didn’t it?” his brother muttered. Lance couldn’t even bring himself to punch him.
“So you have us making you this big dinner, celebrating you, and you weren’t going to say anything?”
“I wanted to,” he began. But the look on her face, and on his grandparents’ faces silenced him. “I’m sorry. I messed up. But I can try again. Apply again, get scholarships again, explain what happened.”
“You think they’ll give you anything? With the grades you finished with and the way you dropped out? You had your high school grades and rank going for you before. Now, you have nothing!” Lance tried not to show how much his mother’s words hurt him.
“Ma, I’m not giving up,” he whispered. She clenched her jaw and stared him with watery blue eyes.
“Oye, pues no somos una familia?” Tia Carla said. “We’re Mexicans. We don’t give up. We don’t just sit back. And as a family, we support each other.” She put a hand on his shoulder. “We have the restaurant. We have the shop. Lance can make the money he needs. And we can help him. I have Beto’s college fund that he never used.”
“Tia, you want to open your salon-”
“Callate, chingado,” she hissed at him. Lance promptly shut up. She looked at the others with a ferocity he’d always admired in her. “We’re not letting him deal with this alone. Not after all these years. He wants to fight. God knows Beto didn’t. Did Carlos? Did Benny or Esmeralda or Vanessa?” His aunts and uncles looked down in shame at the mention of their older kids.
Beto was always drunk, never where he should be. Carlos had died in a gang fight in high school. Benny was quiet and never called, and he worked at the gas station the next county over. Esmeralda had gotten pregnant in high school and Vanessa never wanted to go to college. She married her boyfriend and moved out, and they only heard from her on the holidays.
“Lance is here. He’s fighting. And he needs help even if el pendejo doesn’t ask for it.” Lance sighed and shook his head at his tia. “So we’re gonna help him. I don’t want any of you talking down to him because at least he’s trying! Me oyeron?” They did. They had no choice but to hear her.
“Do the dishes, Lance. We’ll sort everything out tomorrow,” his mother said. “Kids, get ready for bed.” His aunts and uncles left with their kids and his Buela and Papo stayed behind while his mom got the kids settled.
They walked over to him and Lance began shaking his head before the money was put in his hands. “Take it,” Buela insisted, pressing the crisp hundred dollar bill into his hand.
“Buela,” he moaned. “No. I don’t deserve it.”
“You’re fighting. You deserve it more than anyone,” she said firmly. “You use this, and you open a savings account, and you work hard and keep putting money in it. You’re going to be somebody, mijo. I know it.” Lance couldn’t speak so he just nodded and pocketed his money.
“I love you,” he said, pulling her into a hug. “And Papo, I’ll be at the shop after the restaurant every day. I’ll help you. Forget Beto.”
“I know you will,” he said. “Be patient with your mother.” He patted his shoulders and they left. Since they lived down the street, they always walked.
Lance did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen and the table. By the time his siblings were asleep, and he’d finished cleaning, his mom was sitting at the couch with a rosary and a tissue. He walked over to her and kneeled in front of her, cupping her hands and the crisp, quick prayer slipped through her thin, pursed lips.
“Ma,” he murmured. “Ma, look at me.” She did. “I know I messed up. I know I disappointed you. But I won’t let you down again. I’m gonna fight. Like I always do.” She blinked and nodded, pulling him into a hug. The rosary beads dug into his back, but he didn’t mind. Not when his mother was holding him, making him feel like he was five years old again.

Boomerang love pt1
Boomerang: An object that you throw away but comes back.
Description: Jimins first love moves away then comes back four years later. He remembers everything she doesn’t will he succeed in regaining her memory or will he fail?
word count: 2,136
—————————————————
“Hey, Jimin lets meet after school at our hideout.”
“Why? Something on your mind.”
“Let’s just talk about it later, you better be there.”
Everything was moving too fast in my mind I couldn't wait for the day to be over. Rushing out of the classroom sprinting to the treehouse a few blocks away from school just to meet Jimin.
“Hey so what did you want to talk about?”
Reaching at the top to where Jimin was without hesitation wrapped my arms around him and started to sob like crazy. He didn't need to say anything to make me feel better all he had to do was hold me. At times like these no words were needed. Everything about him made me feel at home. He was my home, and I shattered into pieces when I found out that i had to leave it.
“My dad found a better job opportunity in the U.S. My flight leaves early tomorrow.”
Tears sprung out of my eyes for the second time while letting go of him.
“I promise I tried to stop him, we argued and, and-”
“Its okay, everything is gonna be okay.”
Looking back up at him his thumbs moved to caress my cheeks and wiped my tears.
“Don’t forget me…”
“Promise i wont ever…”
4 years later…..
“Im gonna miss you guys so much.”
“You better keep in contact with us.”
“I will, I promise.”
With tears streaming down my face, I wave my hand back to my friends while entering my car. My parents always tend to travel a lot because of their jobs, my mother as a travel nurse and my father as a management consultant they're rarely home but whenever they do come home they shower me with gifts. And I've always appreciated that but the one thing that annoyed me the most is that we tend to move to different places too often. But this time they promised to move one last time and stay there. They've chosen to move back to my hometown where I was born. I wasn't too sure about it because I couldn't remember anything or anyone about my hometown. But I’m pretty excited to, because I want to explore and get to know more about it.
“Promise that this is the last place we’re moving to.”
“We promise baby.”
     —————————————————
“Welcome home”
Wow this house is bigger than my last two houses combined.
“Let’s unpack and you can rest, then we’ll call you when dinners ready”
“Actually I'm not tired can you guys tell me more about here because I can’t seem to remember anything about when I was younger.”
“Of course”
“Thanks mom”
“So, what in particular do you want to know about?”
“Everything.”
“Well, this is the same house we lived in back then, oh and i forgot to tell you, if you want you can go visit Jimin.”
Jimin, this name rings a bell but I'm not really sure why.
“Jimin? Who's that?”
When I suddenly asked her, her mouth dropped.
“Jimin, Park Jimin.”
“Can’t remember”
“You can't be serious, you're joking right?”
“My dear mother would I ever lie to you? But seriously, why is it such a big deal that I can't remember him?”
“HOW DO YOU NOT REMEMBER PARK MOTHER FUCKING JIMIN!”
“I don’t know, I mean a lot of things happened these past few years.”
“Ok well, the reason why i’m so shocked is that Jimin was your best friend here, you two were practically inseparable from each other. You did everything together, went to the same school, ate together, played together, slept together the list could go on and on. But honestly what is wrong with you how could you not remember him? And whenever he wasn't around you, you were either crying or whining.” For fucks sake you couldn't even sleep without this boy beside you.”
“How are you so sure he remembers me exactly?”
“I’ve been in touch with his mother ever since we left. She even said sometimes she caught him crying to himself because of how much he missed you. And you cant even remember him. Unbelievable.”
“Well…can’t you tell them to come over so that i can see him then maybe I’ll remember.”
“They are, I forgot to tell you.”
“Can you describe how he was like?”
“Sweetest boy anyone could ever meet, adorable, hyper etc..”
“What was I like?”
“A pain in the ass.”
“— —”
“’Im kidding, I’m kidding, unlike now you were very quiet, everyone loved you and always called you super cute.”
         ——————————————
*Doorbell rang*
“Y/n, get your ass up and answer the door!”
“Im in the bathroom!”
Goddamn it why cant i remember anything honestly what’s wrong with me? Whatever I need to just chill then I’ll come down later.
“Y/n get down here!”
“Coming!”
Before going down I checked my hair trying not to look bad. I mean I need to leave a good impression right?
“OMG is this y/n? You're so beautiful! We missed you so much!”
“Thank you I missed you guys too!”
I think I do at least.
“Where’s Jimin?” My mom asked.
“Oh he's at home. He stayed at home because I told him that y/n would meet him there.”
WTF WHAT DO I DO!!! Shit. Ok, ok whatever I’ll just meet him there talk, chill, then leave. But one more problem where’s their house. Pulling my mom to the side while Jimins parents talk to my dad.
“Where’s their house?”
“Down the road, first house on the right. Byebye now.”
Of course my mother pushes me out the house. Now I don’t know where the hell I'm going. Down the road first house on the right….Down the road check, now first house on the right check. Wow, this house is huge are these peoples rich?
“I can do this, I can do this.”
*Rings doorbell*
I don’t even know why but my heart is beating like crazy.
*Door opens*
Holy fuck this boy is gorgeous. Before I got to notice anything else I felt two arms wrap around my waist.
“You have no idea how much I've missed you.”
“Umm hey, are you Jimin?”
With that he let go of me, and looked at me confused.
“Yeah, who else did you think it was?”
“I don’t know anybody else from here, all I know is that my mom told me your name is Jimin and we used to be close.”
Jimin POV
She’s….So beautiful. I’ve waited so long for her to come back. I’ve missed her, I’ve wanted to touch her, I've needed her for so long and still do…It wasn't long till i hugged her.
“You have no idea how much I've missed you.”
“Umm hey, are you Jimin?”
What…..Is she talking about?
“Yeah, who else did you think it was?”
I don’t know anybody else from here, all I know is that my mom told me your name is Jimin and we used to be close.”
She can’t be serious, I mean 4 years is a long time but there’s no way she can’t remember me, there’s no way she can’t remember…
“Are you joking cause it’s not funny.”
“I’m serious. Dead serious.”
“You’re saying you don’t remember me?”
“I guess.”
“Then maybe this will help you remember.”
Y/n POV
Suddenly one of his hands moved from my waist to my cheek. But without knowing why, I felt as if I've been longing and expecting this feeling from him, the feeling of being touched even though we just met, or just reunited from being apart for a long time. His lips were so soft and it seemed as if it fit perfectly with mine. But…
*Flashback*
“Don’t forget me…”
“Promise i wont ever…”
Few hours later…..
“Omg my parents are gonna kill me, I have to leave….I guess this is our goodbye……”
We hugged one last time
“Goodbye Jimin I’ll miss you…”
“Goodbye, Y/n…..”
With that, I turned around and started to fastened my paste but just before I got to run I felt somebody's grip around my arm turning me around, next thing I new I felt my lips against somebody else’s.
“Jimi-”
“I love you….I’ll wait….I’ll wait for you.”
One last tear left my eyes. Looking down I couldn't face him, because it hurt too much to face the reality.
“Why didn't you tell me this earlier?”
“I didn't know you were leaving.”
More tears stared to fall out of my eyes from hearing the amount of pain in his voice.
“Look at me.”
I didn't budge. His fingers lifted my chin up to face him. He kissed me one more time, this time longer and more passionate. But I had to pull away no matter how good and comforting it felt to be in his grasp, it would just hurt even more later on.
“Im sorry for everything but I have to go”
Turning around I ran full speed without looking back. Why did it hurt so much to leave him?
*End of flashback*
Pushing him away from me I couldn't take it anymore, everything was too much to take all at once.
“What is your problem? We just met like a minute ago!”
Covering my mouth I couldn't deal with what just happened.
“I’m sorry, I have to go.”
I start to run back as fast as I can.
“No wait!!! Y/n!!!!”
I needed time to think.
*Back home*
“Mom im home!”
“How’d it go with Jimin?” Do you remember him how that you've seen what he looks like?”
Just the fact that we kissed when we were like 7(not actually)no biggie.
“A few things came in mind.”
“I mean something is better than nothing. Right baby girl?”
Looking at her I just smiled and nodded my head.
“Im tired, goodnight mom.”
“Night baby.”
“Oh right, wheres dad?”
“Do you not hear him snoring”
I just started to laugh while walking back upstairs to my room.
*Morning*
Feeling the sun in my face, I kept my eyes close hoping that everything was just a dream but as I opened my eyes and looked around unfortunately it wasn’t. Everything about the house made me feel at home, probably because I lived here before, or maybe because of the few memories that I remember. Heading downstairs,  I stopped in the middle of the hallway to look at the photos on the walls that my mom put up. Looking closely, in every photo that I was in, seemed to have a the same boy….Weird.
“If you’re wondering who that is it’s me.”
“GEEZ u scared me!!!”
“Haha sorry” “Anyways what are you doing here? Where are my parents?”
“They went out with mine and they told me to come here.”
“…..Okay.”
Not paying to much attention to Jimin I turned my head looking back at the photos, when one particular photo stood out to me.
“Do you remember anything?”
He took a few steps closer to me.
“That one.” I grab the photo where me and Jimin are sleeping on one of the couches and I have a huge band aid on my knee.
“I remember standing on a swing and falling off, then when my mom was done putting a band aid on you came and brought me somewhere to sleep and calm down but then eventually we both fell asleep next to each other. Am I right?” Looking back at him his eyes seemed to sparkle at the fact that I remembered something.
“Yeah that’s what happened. You know your mom used to tell me sometimes that when you visited your grandparents you couldn't even sleep without me beside you.”
Stepping closer to him I whisper in his ear.
“I mean I was a little girl, but Im a big girl now don’t worry about it.”
Taking one more glance at him his gaze felt stronger but with that I walk away heading to the kitchen. While walking away he followed me and as we reached the kitchen his hands found their way on my hips and placed me on the counter while he rested his hands beside my hips. Without words being said our faces seemed to move closer to each other. As our lips were about to touch, the door swung open. And at that we both pull apart from each other. I jumped off the counter and went to the bathroom, while Jimin stayed in the kitchen to talk to our parents.
Jimin POV
“Hey Jimin where’s y/n?”
“I think she went to the bathroom.”
“Okay…And I need to tell you something about y/n.”
“Okay what about y/n?”
“I’ll tell you when she's out the house.”
“….Okay.”
Thats weird I wonder what she's talking about.

7x12 review and thoughts
How is no one talking about the secret passageway on the game map?! They do no analysis of this board game at all!!!
“Her help is dead, his head rolled over your feet remember?” - Hanna
‘What about Sidney? ‘- ‘Oh please let's not go there’ - Emily
‘Em you’ve already been there!’ - Spencer. Omg this made me laugh so hard
Emily is the one that wants out this time..interesting.
“I may have been the one driving this car but we have to be in this together  ”- Hanna
I bet A.D didn’t know that the only new information being given this episode is to A.D! Obviously the game is insane and has a recording device, they know A has always stalked them, why do they talk right there? Why not ditch their phones and talk somewhere out in the open?
“Nicole Gordon was never his fiance, I am! ” - Aria. Oh Aria you wonderful crazy thing
Addison Derringer is not A. She probably got manipulated or bribed by Jenna, or another A minion, even the minions need minions in this A game.
Addison is just like Alison in high school, and Alison now.
I am loving Spencers dress and Arias' hair!
I can’t believe Veronica still backs up Peter..it infuriates me.
“Wow, so only you and dad could appreciate the bitter irony of me checking into the same mental hospital where I was born ”- Spencer-
I really feel bad for Veronica, I do. She adopted a child who was born because her husband was cheating on her, she covered for his ass all these years and Spencer never felt like anything but a Hastings, I think Spencer is being pretty horrible to Veronica. I get that she hurting but she's in her twenties not she isn’t a child. What did she want Veronica to do? Discuss the fact that Peter is a cheating bastard and that Spencer is the result of an affair?
So..does Hanna make her own clothes to wear? Hence the ‘you went through my closet!’
Does she sew them? Design and send them somewhere to get made? Does she buy the materials?
Emily benches Addison for missing a practice, Addison is pure attitude, not even looking up from her phone.
“My head was throbbing, listening to your rusty whistle wasn’t going to help” - Addison, reminding us of old Ali.
Alison is in pay attention to me mode...what if I have one like her..or me... She has not decided if she is keeping the baby
So are Spencer and Marco together?
Spencer tells Marco about Mary and shows the letter, changes one detail..she found the letter rather than she was given the letter after playing a crazy board game
Hold up…if the beading, the belt, the collar was Hanna’s bosses idea that Hanna took then what did Hanna design? A plain black dress with a tutu skirt?
Addison is a little psycho, she goes to Paige, accuses Emily of hitting on her and other girls on the team then shows Paige a photo of Emily being’inappropriate’ with Alison, hoping to anger Paige. Addison's eavesdropping has paid off, she's overheard Emily and Paige, and Emily and Alison.
I find Holden really attractive this time, also he’s so damn normal, and nice, and sweet.
Aria taking off the ring, foreshadowing?
“Did Ezra propose to her first?”- Aria
Holden reminds Aria that everyone has a past, that even Aria has had other men tell her they love her, and she doesn’t talk to Ezra about that so maybe Ezra wouldn’t tell her if he had proposed to Nicole before she disappeared
“Just because you met him when you were in 11th grade doesn’t mean he’s frozen in amber” - Holden. Holden is so anti-Ezra but not in a tell Aria to ditch his ass way.
Emily tells Paige she will go tell Hackett about what Addison is doing, Paige tells Emily she will handle it before it gets worse and Emily is accused of hitting on students
Marco has a lead in. Mary..Lead out of Scranton! Mary Drake works at Dunder Mifflin!
Spencer has enlisted Marco to help find Mary
Tap tap tap Jenna is coming!!!
Jenna can identify Spencer by her breathing? Come the fuck on now. Jenna can see, at the very least she can partially see
So we know Jenna has been told to say all this, she does it convincingly, so convincingly that I question all the other times I’ve felt bad for Jenna when she has a sob story.
I think Jenna has always wanted revenge for the liars blinding her, and Noel for him getting suspended for cheating, and perhaps other things we don’t know about.
Jenna tells Marco that Noel was the psychopath that lured Jenna to the blind school to kill her, and he had her work for him so she could have money for eye surgery.
Not sure why Marco didn’t take Jenna aside, to begin with..it’s unprofessional and ridiculous to let Spencer stand there as Jenna makes her statement
Hanna tries to call Claudia about the dress...
“She has balls the size of church bells.” - Omg Spencer..just omg.
She hasn’t told Marco about the game but seems to want to.
Sparia discusses Spencer wanting to find Mary. She wants to get to know Mary, not as someone to fear but to forgive.
Jenna walks in with 2 other blind people, flanking her on either side..or..’‘bookends’ -  as Emily would describe it.
Jenna sends a text and Emily hears Addison’s phone go off at the same time
Spencer tells her Veronica she won't be working with her anymore. I'm really disappointed with Spencer right now, Veronica does not deserve this treatment, I get that she is upset but to take it all out on Veronica instead of Peter is unfair. Veronica continues to tell her she loves her and has never felt they were not a family and Spencer is just cold. I really feel for Veronica, and find Spencer irritating and a little much right now. I usually love Spencer but she’s 23, not 13. This woman adopted you and raised you as her own, not telling you you’re the product of an affair her cheating husband had with a mentally ill woman sounds like the safer thing to do.
Spencer has the audacity to sound upset about the house being sold after she’s outright said Veronica isn’t her mother and after she’s been nothing but cold to Veronica since she found out Mary is her mom and she seems to want to forgive Mary but punish Veronica.
Arias dress is cute
Aria gets an article on Ezra reuniting with his fiance Nicole Gordon. The article talks about Nicole’s kidnapping and being held by guerrilla forces. They show pictures of Ezra and Nicole before and after the reunion. I am low key shipping Aria and Holden. I get the feeling that Ezra won’t be able to leave Nicole. He will tell Aria this in a way that makes him seem like some white knight to Nicole and how Aria would always feel guilty for Nicole not getting Ezra.. he will make it seem like he’s doing her the favor. He’s everyone’s white knight.
Mona seems to be working like crazy on this fashion business and Hanna is too busy waiting to eat with Caleb to even look at jewelry designers Mona is showing her right this minute? She asks Mona to forward them to her. Hanna this is your business, get yourself into it, Caleb can eat by himself, you can see him later. I don’t get this too busy for a career and relationship thing.
Catherine is going to BORROW shoes from Hanna? Why wouldn’t she buy a pair like them? Hanna is having these shoes fixed. It’s not like Hanna designed the shoe, it's just strange to me.
OMG Jenna walks in wearing Hanna’s dress but in white, and I must say it looks better in white, and great on Jenna
Mona flips out, more so than Hanna, who acts rather meekly, wtf where is crazy Hanna right now? Mona confronts Jenna with a..’Yo Jenna! ‘ Omg Mona is amazing
Jenna claims the dress was a gift, Jenna says she and her posse have an uber waiting and she tap taps the fuck out of there
Hanna says it’s all part of the game and Mona is left asking what game.
Mona is getting left behind again. I don’t want A to be Mona again because I feel Mona has gotten past that and is a strong and confident woman now.
Emily wants to get into the barn to see the Game to play it because she is convinced Addison is working for A.D
Emily reminds the audience A.D took a final exam for her
“I'm living proof, once you invite the devil in, horrid little seeds start to sprout” - Alison.OMG
Jenna and her posse meet at the cobbler place where Hanna’s shoes are Caleb wants to handle Jenna
Jenna smells Hanna on Caleb, and guesses it is Hanna behind her. Caleb questions why she is here, and where she got the dress. He even grabs her by the cane and threatens her. She reminds him only Noel could contradict the story she told the police and he’s dead.
Hanna gets locked in a caged off room at the cobbler's place, someone obviously closed that door, it didn’t swing randomly closed on its own, and someone shut off the lights.
lol @   #benchme lol Addison is taking bong hits with her boyfriend in a car behind the brew.
Aria the greatest liar convinces a nurse to let her in after visiting hours but telling her she's brought her good friend Nicole some salt water taffy.
317 is Nicole’s room number.
Holden stops Aria from going in to see/confront Nicole. He’s such a sweetheart and really mature!
The sander thing is going off, something swings from the ceiling tries to punch Hanna, she's having pure flashbacks of being tortured in the barn with that cattle prod. She gets a text from A.D and A.D really seems to hate Hanna, like a lot.
‘Wait your turn, Bitch, It’ll come. And you’ll be ready - A.D
A.D seems to hate Hanna more than anyone, Spencer gets clues about her mother, Aria just has Ezra drama and Emily gets help from A.D in dealing with Addison. Why the major Hanna hate? Spencer twin would hate Hanna for the Spaleb mess. HMM.
Caleb rescues Hanna
Emily confronts and threatens Addison with the bong video, Paige intervenes and tells Addison she's in trouble for gloating about getting rid of Emily in an email they found. Her parents and principal Hackett have been informed
‘Why? you gonna smack me? “- Addison.
“No I can’t do that, but somebody should have a long time ago”. - Emily
Aria asks Holden if she should give the ring back and Holden tells her not to expect Ezra to be on her timetable, if he needs time give it to him and that he’s probably more torn up than she is.
Emily is given another puzzle piece, still black and white, still scrawly lines and an abstract feel. Spencer theorizes it’s a map but I still think it could be a sonogram or a collage that includes a sonogram picture.
So that’s my live watch review..I’ll try to post some more thoughts later!

The Stories We Tell
*Disclaimer: all names and identifying information about patients have been modified. Please see “About and Disclaimer” for more information.
We can get wrapped up in a kid’s story and presentation and forget that they exist in an environment all their own, and their family lives this. I have a job and everyday I make a choice to go to work, even if I don’t want to. I can quit and go work somewhere else. When my shift ends, I leave.
Patients and families don’t usually have that choice.
One day I was charge nurse, and during hand off the night charge wanted to put a dad on my radar. A young girl I’ll call *Katie had admitted late the night before (or that morning, if you will) and gone to sleep very late. Around 430 am, another patient woke up. This peer is particularly loud and has been on our unit for a while. I like him, but he can be annoying and only has one volume. Long story short, peer is loud, Katie and dad wake up, dad comes out frustrated, peer begins banging on Katie’s door and screaming (negative attention-seeking), peer is ultimately relocated and dad is reported to (not unreasonably) be mad and in need of a check-in from the charge nurse.
Great.
I worked an extra Thursday in addition to my regular Friday-Sunday stretch, so this is my fourth 12-hour shift in a row. The day before had a big restraint event, which is traumatic for everyone, some comments from a coworker that had set me off however much I tried not to take things personally, and I’d left not feeling particularly great. I slept about 5 hours and I’m tired and have a headache. To be honest, right now I’m a far shot from my best version of myself. And I’m not particularly interested in having another “I’m sorry, yes I understand you’re concerned about our ability to keep your daughter safe, this peer is very sick and we did move him, I’m sorry, we’re basically a mental health ED so sometimes this happens but it sucks and we’re going to do everything we can to keep it from happening again” conversation with a dad. Yes, it’s fair that he’s miffed, but you’re on a pediatric psych unit, come on.
But this is my job and ultimately I’m choosing to be here and this dad and his daughter don’t exactly have a choice. (Legally they probably do, depending on the case, but what I mean is that there isn’t a safer option for them and they know it. This particular girl is suicidal and can’t commit to being safe and dad can’t keep her safe, so they’re here whether they like it or not.) This entire family is in crisis and they definitely don’t want to be here either. They’re probably scared and sleep-deprived and still in shock from whatever horrible crisis event brought them to our unit in the first place. So I’m gonna put on big girl pants and stop feeling sorry for myself.
I finish my hand-offs and time-sensitive morning tasks. I walk back to the nursing station and one of the night coaches stops me.
“Hey, Katie’s dad is waiting for a check-in, are you going to talk to him?”
Yup. Great. On it. Now apparently. Cool.
I walk into the room and introduce myself. Dad shakes my hand and tells me his name. He looks pretty neutral and he waits for me to speak. I sit on the bed across from him and remind myself how much it really really sucks for this family that they have to be here and how scary it must be. This is my job and I’m used to screaming kids and picking coping skills to deal with them. Most people are not.
“I’m so sorry about what happened this morning. I know you all got in super late and I’m sure it was the last thing you and Katie needed. We are moving that friend’s room so hopefully it won’t happen again. Again, I’m really sorry.”
Dad nods. “I know where we are. I get it.” He looks down, then back at me. “We were here in *March. But my worry is she’s worse.” Oh. He doesn’t actually care about the peer. That was a symptom of something else. I nod and make mmm-hmming noises, so he continues. “Now her mom and I are going through a divorce. It’s amicable, I mean, we’re talking and all, but I know it affects Katie.”
Dad looks like he might cry. I lean forward. “There’s so much going on. And it’s so hard that she’s here, that she needs to be.” I hear you. You’re not crazy. This sucks.
Dad nods. “Mom doesn’t want her here, but I just think she needs to be. I want her to be safe. I want her to get better. I don’t know what to do.”
I nod again. “We will keep her safe. We can’t fix everything, but we can keep her safe. Get her to a place where she’s safe enough to get the resources she needs at home.”
We talk a little more and I make sure he knows about the resources and teams we have for families on the unit. I offer him water and ask if he needs anything else. I don’t have a ton of groundbreaking things to say, but I’m there and he appreciates it. I let him know I’ll be on the unit until 730 pm if he needs me and he thanks me.
We work in a stressful environment by nature. Sometimes we forget that we’re human. Sometimes we forget that everyone else is human. We start telling ourselves stories in our heads and those stories become facts and change the way we see others and interactions.
But when we look at them, we see what they are: stories. Sometimes there’s truth to them and we have them for a reason, but they are not facts.
The story I was telling myself, under layers of consciousness and thought patterns and processes, was that this dad was going to be an unreasonable jerk. This wouldn’t exactly have been a fair assessment even if he WAS mad, but regardless a part of my brain had already categorized him in a way that ended up being very wrong.
Well, that’s humbling.
Later that day, a call for support comes over our walkies, aka “we need a charge nurse or somebody to help with something right now.” I find Katie lying on the ground in our hallway, dad sitting behind her. She’s gasping and sobbing and not responding verbally. Either a panic attack or a flashback, I’m not completely sure what. Looks more like a flashback. Damn.
I crouch down by her and am careful not to touch her or lean over her. Soft voice, short sentences, even affect. “Katie, you’re safe. You’re in [the] hospital. I’m [the] nurse and dad is here. You’re safe. Nice deep breaths. Breathe in, breathe out.”
You’re safe, you’re safe, you’re safe. Every few seconds, and orienting her to where she is and who is here. Reminding her to breathe. We have to wait these out.
Flashbacks suck. The reality that kids have PTSD from trauma and have flashbacks to begin with sucks. It really really sucks.
Gradually her breaths deepen and her gasps slow. “Katie, can you here me?”
Her head moves up and down ever so slightly.
Again. “You’re safe. You’re in the hospital with [me] the nurse and dad. You’re safe.”
Her eyes open slightly.
“Do you want to go somewhere quieter and so you have some privacy?”
This time, a definite nod.
“Ok, let’s sit up slowly. Dad’s coming up from behind to support your back. My arm is right here if you want to grab it but I won’t touch you.”
We get Katie and dad moved and I let them have some space while they both recover. I pop out of the nursing station every few minutes to get them things and check in.
Dad has to go. He tells me and Katie this when I come out. “Katie, your mom is coming in half an hour. I have [your brother] tonight so I can’t spend the night.” Katie starts crying and dad rushes to continue. “But if mom can’t stay tonight we’ll figure it out. I’ll come back. I promise. I’ll come back. We’ll make it work.”
Katie presses into his chest and he holds her tight. “You’re in good hands, Katie.” Then he looks at me. “You’re in very very good hands.”
Shit, I’m gonna cry.
I didn’t do much. I was just there. And I had a bad attitude about this guy this morning without even meeting him.
“We’ll take care of you Katie, ok? I promise.”
Sometimes my patients and their families teach me more than I teach them. Frequently my patients and their families teach me more than I teach them.
I walk dad off the unit and he goes home to a house without his daughter with a heaviness and sadness in his heart that won’t easily fade. I finish my shift, manage aggressive events with other patients, change orders, write plans, check-in with staff and make sure THEY have what they need, and eventually I handoff to the nights’ crew. I’m reminded that the coworker who upset me the day before is going to a funeral. Well there was another story I told myself. Glad I waited to say anything about it. I go home and I’m carrying the weight of a different event, a different patient, a different story and set of facts. I kiss my husband, walk my puppy, eat dinner and have a beer. Work comes home with me, sometimes, but even so my little corner of the world is pretty stable right now and I’m downright lucky.
I think about that patient and dad later though. I hope we can help them get what they need, for now. It will be a long road ahead and we’re just a little stop on the way.
But maybe I can and have touched them in some way, however small, and just helped them feel heard and cared for. Even if the truth is that I’m crabby and flawed just like everyone else. Maybe I haven’t. But either way, being a tiny part of these stories, the real stories and not the ones we tell ourselves in our heads, being present with people at what is often their absolute worst and one of the hardest things they’ve been through, that is one of the greatest honors I can imagine.
