okay but like literally what am I supposed to do. I met this guy in pretty much the most perfect conceivable way, and I texted him the next day thinking "this probably won't go anywhere but it would be nice at least to be friends and hang out" and then he was the one to imply that we should meet up for a date. and admittedly then he backed off a little bit, but between us it really seemed like we were circling ever closer to a relationship. and I know it's picky, but as a gay trans man who's maybe ace/demisexual and who really prefers traditionally masculine men, it was like... wow this guy is checking off ALL the boxes and then some! he's got a dog, we agree on fundamental philosophies, we have some expertise in the natural world that is related but don't completely overlap, he lives in a place that I consider home and is planning to stay there long-term and I WANT someone to tie me here! I want a reason to stay that isn't just for me!

and I genuinely, genuinely developed a connection with him that isn't like anything I've felt for someone before. I was comfortable, I was happy, I was able to look forward to spending time together without overthinking it, I was ready to shamelessly and legitimately be someone who would emotionally support him. not to mention plenty of other things that I felt for the first time. a quiet part of me that was always convinced that I'd never find the right person was suddenly being proven wrong. and then after 2 months of texting and dating and growing feelings, it's suddenly over. he's got a gut feeling that we're not meant to be together like that and it's like... a complete 180° from our last weekend together. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to fuckin do

And going I already feel saved just from your concern alone to Futa.

Hi Jenn. Some time ago you had a post where you - and I'm paraphrasing - advised people to buy/read 10 or 20 (I think?) current books and really "rip them apart" - i.e. analyze them, study them - to help assist with their own writing/publishing goals, get to know the market, learn from the books what worked to get them published. These weren't the exact words. I've tried using the search function but can't find the post. Could you link to it or maybe give similar advice again please? Thank you.

Sure - I know I gave this advice *someplace* on here, and for sure on twitter, but since that website has gone to the dogs I'll just paste the thread below and save it in the FAQ.

The best advice I have if you want to write for kids is, GO TO THE LIBRARY AND READ 100 BOOKS PUBLISHED IN YOUR CATEGORY IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS. Put your favorites in a special pile and buy your own copies of those so you can write in them. Tear them apart. Why and HOW do they work?

If you do this: CONGRATULATIONS, you just did much of the work for a masters degree without having to pay for it. While you're at it - make a spreadsheet of those 100 books, noting WHO PUBLISHED THEM, and agent/editor if they are listed in the acknowledgements. Note patterns!

If you do THIS step: CONGRATULATIONS, you just got a crash course in publishing and are armed with the knowledge of "who publishes what" that you will need as you begin your querying/publishing journey.

Whenever I give this advice, some folks push back and complain about "having to" read lots of kids books (which, it's the best homework I can IMAGINE doing, and if you don't like reading them, maybe don't WRITE them!), or they think it is a waste of time or I'm being MEAN... I think it can actually SAVE you time flailing in the darkness, and I'm being nice.

But hey, if you don't like it: Ignore me! You don't need to fight me about it. Like... it's free advice and this is a free country. I promise that I don't care what you do or don't do. :-)

PS: I specify "published in the last five years" bc publishing trends change; if you are relying on knowledge of the kids books that were published when YOU were a kid as your main source, you limit yourself. What flew in the 1980s would not fly today, and vice-versa.

PPS: For everyone saying this is advice applicable to any genre or category: I know! But since I’m an expert about children’s books, I’ll speak on children’s books. If I said “all books” I promise there’d be adult book writers hollering at me in the comments and I’m not into it!

PPPS: (And before anyone comes for me: I can call myself an expert about children’s books because I literally AM ONE, after 30+ years in the field. That doesn’t mean I’m better than anyone else or that you have to take my advice. You do you!)

Well I did have a Wattpad account like a decade ago where I posted rpf 😭!! But I have mostly blocked such A Horror from my memory. This time at least, my journey to begin writing Mando fanfic took a few months I guess. I started reading a lot of fanfic after season 3 ended. Then last summer I read a book called Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I got it cheap from a charity shop lmao and it's about a nerdy girl who goes to college and writes fanfic, and I just thought "Hey, I could do that!" It's a sweet story and she doesn't shy away from being a nerd or a writer and I wish I did the same at Uni but hey ho! I'm embracing my nerdiness now. So there we go haha. That's my uncool story 😎!

I think she would know what to do, how to handle the logistics of getting rid of a body because no, I'm not going to even attempt to explain it to the police.

Ahhh I'm gonna recommend my favourite Din/reader fic that I read so far, it's called Beneath Beskar and is, in my opinion, a MASTERPIECE. I think I read it last like a year ago, definitely due a reread soon! It's so good, the slow burn and characterisation AND PLOT TWIST/REVEAL AT THE END! Incredible.

Basically just poor spelling/grammar to the point of it being unreadable, but that's very rare. Or if there was an improperly tagged trigger. But I'm not very fussy about plot or characterisation! I'll give most things a shot tbh :D

The fastest way to become my mutual is take it very, very slow, lol. I met @xxlea-nardoxx after reblogging some of her Silver art, and we slowly began talking in the comments and reactions before moving to our DMs, but iirc that took multiple months. And for you, you began leaving comments on my Ao3 stories for a while before moving on to Tumblr (I don't recall if we exchanged Tumblr usernames or something, though. But your comments were a great help in getting through New Beginnings! <3). Overall, I vibe best with people who like/reblog some of my posts here and send in asks with me sending asks back at times: it gives me some time to see who I am talking to and what our stances are on things.

I'm so glad I am no longer so ill, haha. I legitimately couldn't do shit except lay on the couch, have a fever, and be unable to eat. Plus, it really sucked that it took so long (well over three weeks): I began feeling just a bit desperate with every time I thought I had improved, only for the illness to come right back again a day later. And I'm still easily winded with zero stamina... Running around like BotW!Link with a constantly-empty stamina wheel here, while having no idea when that will finally be fixed...

I want to use that uncertainty as a guiding line in Stories. I named the fic All The Stories That Will Be Written because we don't know how our stories and those of the world will go: none of us can predict the future. I know we can't, but I hate it. It makes an interesting contrast with Silver who is from the future and who has a very unique story that formed his life there, but who is also shackled by uncertainties and worries and acts out heavily because of those. Yesterday I was going through the bits I have already written... and I found I'm entirely stuck eight chapters in, lmao. There's events that I know have to happen: Espio will have to convince Silver to stay in the past for longer, Espio will have to try and find evidence that proves Silver's innocence, Silver will have to undergo some development that shows why he is so intense about everything all the time, and I also want him to discover what Espio is up to (I also have an idea of what will happen after that, but that is something I don't want to spoil yet :>). It just needs to be written, aka the number 1 enemy of all writers XD With having been so ill, my whole writing system is entirely out of whack. I gotta sit down and brainstorm the next handful of upcoming chapters and see what I can make of it!

Could you share some good advices regarding reading and how should one ask for consent reading another's energy? And also protecting our own energy

Salutations !

So whenever I start my session I shuffle my cards and greet them (yes I am too polite) to « cleanse » them and at the same time I try to ease my mind, stay peaceful and calm. Then I greet the person’s guides first then the person and excuse myself if I disturb them. Then I ask them the question and according to the cards that fell I interpret it as « open or closed » to my reading. But not only the cards but the sensations as well. Also I talk with the guides (especially) and the person to reassure them of my intentions that I won’t be intrusive and give too detailed information. I want them to trust me.

So how I do :

Me with my cards shuffling them and greeting them for a moment… « Hello x’s guides and hello x, I hope I am not disturbing and excuse me if I ever disturb you, somebody wants to know … if you want to collaborate with me for this reading, could you give me some cards please? I won’t dwelve a lot on the subject and won’t reveal things you do not want me too » then I look at the cards and pay attention to how I feel.

If it’s positive then I can, if it’s negative then I stop. There was two readings I couldn’t do because the guides and/or the person’s energy didn’t wanted me to. Also sometimes while shuffling they give me some information but I don’t share them because I think I am not allowed to do so or as of right now at least, and also because I am not quite sure if what I read/heard is right.

To protect my energy I visualize a huge water dome around me with stars and shooting stars (because that’s what I love haha) and I am above the ocean’s water and imagine myself getting cleaned because of my surrounding! After that I feel cleaner and protected and at peace ☺️

That’s how I operate but if some other anon readers want to share their method it would be great as well! 😊

disclaimer: i am relatively new in like, actually practicing polyamory while being aware i'm polyamorous and calling it that, instead of just stumbling into shit. so just keep in mind that my opinions are based on what i have experienced so far and might change with time! so i'm definitely not an expert haha

1. When do you notice you are not meant for monogamy?

pretty early, i think, but i can't pinpoint the exact age? when i was around like... 16, 17 probably?

2. How many partners do you have?

i don't like to share too much of my personal stuff online, but, as you all know, i have a wife (she is not actually my wife, as in we're not legally married, but we call each other wife just bc that's how we vibe haha, it feels better than gf for some reason) that i mention here sometimes, and i am also involved with one other person. that's it for actual established partners/relationships.

3. What kind of polycule is your preferred?

i sorta like to vibe on my own and have multiple relationships that i don't define in a hierarchical manner. that being said, a person that has been in my life for longer will have precedence over someone i've just met.

4. What advice would you give people that just realized they are poly as well?

uhhhh i sorta love to collect people like pokemon, and that's all good and well, but the problem is that people require time. to all new poly people, i'd suggest that if you get a bit too excited and start entering multiple relationships, see how much you can *actually* handle without getting overwhelmed and stretching yourself too thin. make sure you can give people the time they deserve and that it's actually fun!

5. What do you say to all the poly haters?

i say, it's a free world and you're allowed to hate whoever you want! :)

6. How do you set with a new partner?

not sure i understand the question! do you mean how do i establish what kind of relationship it's gonna be? in that case, i just vibe until it makes itself clear! i don't like to force relationships into boxes!

7. Do you prefer short term partners or longterm partners?

both have a place in my life! but generally i'm more of a long term gal. if i put in the effort i sort of want it to be someone i really like. and if i really like you, why would i not want it to last longer? :)

8. Do your partners know each other? Do you want that?

yes. but i'd never force anybody to meet somebody, and especially not to hang out. i'm the sort of person who'd kind of want to put everybody i love in a big room and make them be friends, but i know that's not what works for everybody so i Restrain Myself with my party animator energy lol. that being said, the two people i'm involved with send each other memes as far as i know, so they are on friendly terms!

How do you cope up on a bad day?

Oof. I'm not sure if I'm the right person to ask about this as I literally suffer from bipolar disorder hahaha. Bad days are extra harder because it's hard for me to regulate my emotions in a better & healthier way. I just kind of suffer from getting so overwhelmed that I wanna explode and I often go through some kind of episode hahahajsksksk 🥲

But if you wanna know what I do when it happens anyway...

1.) Rant to someone I trust lol. Reklamadora mode ganon hahah. Someone I know who will always listen and give me sound advice and would just let me get all my emotions out about a certain thing that happened. It just helps to get it out of your system, at least for me it does. Of course do it with someone who is willing and emotionally available to be there for you. I don't want to burden somebody else with my troubles.

2.) I stress eat hahahaha. Not the best thing to do but whatever na lang treat yo self ganon char. Would cook something good for myself o kaya pag masyadong stressed or tamad, oorder na lang lol. I have terrible eating habits so pls don't listen to my advice but anyway that's what I do. And of course, iced coffee. I get super irritable pag di nagkakape. Yes I am fully aware that I am actually literally addicted to caffeine and that's a symptom of caffeine addiction pag masyadong dependent yung mood ko sa kape... pero wala ganon eh HAHA. Medyo survival mode kasi ako with my BD so I just have to do something that will make me feel better instantly and help my mood kahit na di siya magandang habit.

3.) RELEASE. I would either watch a show/movie to cry to. Or listen to music that would make me cry. Or pleasure myself and cum looooool. Or all of the above ahahaha. Hey, it works!!

4.) If I'm not looking to cry or release my emotions and tension, and if I just want to feel comfortable, I would watch my comfort shows lang plus food :) Usually sitcoms, cartoon shows that I love (spongebob or the amazing world of gumball are my go-to), or adult swim type shows, o kaya I just watch whatever shows up sa YT feed ko hahaha usually game plays or cooking vids pinapanood ko.

2. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?

Generally I'm a 'write as I go' person, especially for the shorter fics I tend to write. Very often I don't even divide a story into chapters until it's finished, or else I find a convenient natural break as I go and decide that's the end of the chapter. I'll scribble out a few notes for myself just to lay out what particular points I want to hit in the story, but they're very broad for the most part; beyond that it's 'write and see where it goes!'

18. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?

Depends entirely on the fic in question. Sometimes I go in with a title, sometimes one comes to me while it's a WIP, sometimes I write the whole thing then sit here like 'mannnn now I gotta figure out a TITLE, ugh'.

What I usually do is try to find a title that encompasses the overall mood or theme of the fic. I'll pull a lot of inspiration, if not always direct quotes, from song lyrics. I tend to roll around a lot of different ideas before I settle on one, and it can be a bit of a frustrating process.

23. Best writing advice for other writers?

Very cliche and you've heard it a thousand times, but truly - write for yourself first. Write the fics that you want to read. Write because you want to, write because there's something inside you that you just have to get out into words. Tell the stories you would still want to tell even if it was just an empty universe and your own ears to hear them.

24. Worst writing advice anyone ever gave you?

I honestly can't remember much writing advice I've been given.

29. What’s your revision or editing process like?

Honestly? Minimal. I don't really do 'rough drafts' for most of my fics - I write so much in my head first that by the time I get to typing, it's probably 80% fine already. I'll give even oneshots a dozen read-throughs or more as I'm writing them, for sure, but most edits are just changing a word here or a sentence there, nothing all that major.

(Fortress Funtimes is the exception at the moment, because that is my longest, most involved WIP by a factor of five probably, and it's already gotten a lot of edits as I go. I'm still having to get used to doing that, being patient with myself as I work through all the moving pieces.)

56. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

There are a lot of things I love about my writing, but I'll go for the obvious one here - capturing character dialogue. I flatter myself that I've always been exceptionally good at writing dialogue you can hear, and pinning down the nuances of how each character speaks, especially when writing an already canon character. (That said, even knowing I'm good at it, I'm delighted every time somebody comments to confirm it haha)

Hi! How are you doing? Hope you’re doing well! If I may ask, a TUA, Stranger Things and Wednesday (2022) matchup please :]

Appearance: I have shoulder-length layered dark brown hair with brown eyes and round glasses. I’m currently 5’0 and I have tanned skin. I also have a mole on the bottom of my left eye. Additionally, my clothing style is mostly minimalistic.

Personality: I’m an INFJ-T, 9w1. I describe myself to be quite carefree and quite shy. I don’t really dislike being around people, although I do like being by myself a lot. A few people have called me pretty approachable and easy going at first, and mostly getting to know my cheery side when they got closer to me. I’m the type of person to be more cheerful and loud when I get comfortable around someone! I will consider myself the ‘Therapist Friend’(?). I like to listen more than talking, and I try my best to give advices to my friends and support them however I can. I really care for them. I might describe myself a ‘Reclusive Optimist’. Also last addition, I’m not very Academically Intelligent. I’m more Emotionally Intelligent, and honestly I don’t really mind that.

Likes / Dislikes : I like art and photography! Art is such a pretty topic and subject for me to be honest, It’s really interesting to see a human person’s thoughts, feelings and ideas placed in a canvas, an instrument (music) or even simply written in paper. I also like to take walks on the park and listening to music along the way. I also like the topic of ghosts and ghost hunting (yes I watch Buzzfeed Unsolved and Ghost Files LOL), I like to incorporate them in a few of my stories! I also like coffee and oversized clothing, I just think they are neat heheh. Oh, and I love plushies! I have a lot of them on my bed, I like to hug them as I sleep. I don’t think I can sleep without hugging them hahah.

For my dislikes I think I generally don’t like food that are too sweet haha. I don’t mind sweet things, just not things that are very sweet. I also dislike loud noises hahah. Also, I’m not particularly a big fan of Math (lmao). Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it’s a fun subject to other people but It always makes my head hurt LOL. OHH and I dislike being alone in the dark. I know I just said I liked ghost hunting, but I probably won’t do it alone hahahah. I feel like having a small group with me would be nice.

Hobbies/Interests: I like to draw and write! It’s refreshing for me to just express my feelings without telling it to somebody. Painting my feelings in a canvas or just writing it on a piece of paper brings me comfort haha. I’m interested in music, my favorite genre is alternative indie! A new genre of music I’m exploring is classical music. I’m mainly interested in things that are art related! Also I think I’ve already mentioned this in likes and dislikes but researching on the topic of ghosts is one of my interests! The ghost hunting equipment are quite tricky lol. Ohh, and I recently just found a hobby in baking! It’s honestly pretty fun and a great way to pass the time for me when I don’t feel like painting or writing.

Hi Jenn. I don't want to query my next book under my real name. I've queried 5 books over the last several years (8 or so) and been rejected and I think agents recognise my name now. And while most are lovely, I do believe some have a bias when they see my name. "Oh no, not this person again..." A couple even asked me not to submit to them anymore which hurt (though most are lovely). So I'd like a fresh start. But how do I explain I queried under a pen name if one is interested/makes offer?

Well first of all -- if an agent asked you not to submit to them anymore, I would ALSO not submit to them under a different name. I'd cross them off my list entirely. And I wouldn't do this just to like... TRICK people, and then haha, pull off the mask at the end like GOTCHA, I'm actually this other person!

But if you're doing this because you just feel like, look, I've grown as a writer, my old name is hampering me, I'm reinventing myself, whatever -- OK, fine.

I've written 500000 posts about pen names (go to the FAQ and read some). Long story short: Nobody cares. Normally I'd say, and the traditional advice is, just query as yourself and put "writing as" so-and-so if you want to use a pen name (like for example, if you are already published in one category but are looking to switch categories -- it's helpful for an agent or editor to be able to contextualize who you are).

In this case, though, it sounds like you kinda want to change your identity -- so just query with that name. And if somebody bites and you are talking to them, you can explain in your call, "well, I'd been querying for years with no success, but I'm reinventing myself with a fresh start, new name, etc" -- you aren't trying to trick anyone, you are just REBRANDING.

People change their names all the time. Trans clients query with their name -- the name they will answer to, regardless of what is on their birth certificate. (Yes at some point they will need to give me their legal name on forms so they can be paid - - but nobody will ever USE that name.). People with long names shorten them all the time. Marietjka Jefojka Baskinovonovitch (or whatever) goes by M.J. Baskin in life, there's zero reason she would need to query with her full name. Married people use their married name in their day-to-day life but still want to use their maiden name as their writing name -- it truly doesn't matter which one they query under, but I'd probably just do the name I wish to be called and will answer to. As long as, at the end of the day, you fill out the legal forms correctly, we will call you whatever you want.

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

I was honestly pondering over it for a while. After all, there's lots of advice that could be given, but plenty of it is not that useful or downright harmful... The best I could come up with at the moment is:

1.Just write, whether it's "good" or "bad". 1.a If you have a beta-reader and they tear you down each time, do not work with them.

Arguably, point 1. is fairly useless, but allow me to elaborate. They're both fairly tightly woven, and by themselves, I'm not sure whether they mean much.

You see, as it happens, I have beta-ed for multiple people by now, and plenty of them were beginners. Some of them have never written any fiction before, and I was the one to encourage them to try. As such, they were fairly vulnerable at the moment, and I thought it is a fairly natural assumption to make that you should be very gentle with such people. However, it apepars I was wrong...

Beta's work is to point out errors and things that could be improved upon, with the ultimate goal of making the project the best it could be at the moment. In my opinion it is worthwile to keep the writer writing too, though. I know of writers who beta-ed of others and were nearly sadistic in how they delivered their critique. It ultimately only discouraged the begginer. Listen, they may have more experience, but if they're in a mentor-like position in relation to you, they should use it to guide you. Beginners are not a fodder for displays of your own ability.

Another thing about working with a beta is that the erorrs they may be pointing out could be just perceived errors. Each writer has their own voice. It consists of habits, preferred phrasings, etc. and well, those take time to build up. You will need to make mistakes along the way to know what suits you... And you cannot do that if somebody consistently tears you down and tells you to be mini-them.

Now, I'm not saying that suggested changes of such nature would not be an improvement to the work itself. However, I'm of the mindset that it's better to let others develop at their own pace, even if it may make my work as a beta a bit lousy. (I suppose it may be a bit more of a teacher approach, rather than a beta-reader one -- although, when working with somebody much less experienced than you, those are fairly connected, aren't they?)

Honestly, even if it may take longer, and even if it may be a convoluted journey, you can improve without a beta-reader or mentor figure of any kind. Just keep on writing, you will get there eventually -- but you will never make it if you get discouraged and stop, even if your few first works were "perfect".

To add some more things, briefly this time:

You can set boundaries wtih your beta-reader.

You can ignore advice, even if it comes from more experienced people.

Treat imperfections more so like fingerprints rather than something to be absolutely disposed of as fast as possible. Dealing with them at your own pace may help you develop your own voice.

You probably want to abide by more codified rules, though (e.g. dialogue notation). They generally just make it easier to read your work.

Writing FanFic is a hobby. Not a job. Don't turn it into a chore.
