David Bowie // Somebody Up There Like's Me
Somebody plays my song in tune
Makes me, makes me, makes me stronger for you, babe
Was a way when we were young, that
Any man was judged by what he'd done
But now you've pick them on the screen (what they look like)
Where they've been

“I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.” ~ Kurt Vonnegut, from The Sirens of Titan
Kurt Vonnegut was a novelist with a unique style: Funny and tragic, sometimes blunt to the point of vulgar or childishly simple, and ping-ponging between hope and bleak nihilism. Many of his works were inspired by his experiences during the Second World War, where he witnessed the bombing of Dresden firsthand. His greatest work, Slaughterhouse-Five, approached this event through a sci-fi lens, having the war veteran Billy Pilgrim coming “unstuck in time” and revisiting his experiences in non-linear fashion. (Though it remains deliberately ambiguous whether the sci-fi explanation is real, or merely the product of post traumatic stress.)
My song ‘Somebody Up There Likes Me’, an instrumental piece, takes its title from Vonnegut’s The Sirens of Titan. It’s the last track on the album, and I seem to recall (though it’s been a while since I’ve read it) that it’s the last line in the book. The Sirens of Titan was an early Vonnegut book, pure sci-fi, following a man who (spoiler warning!!!) finds that his entire life, and indeed all of human history, has been manipulated by aliens as a means of delivering a spare part to a stranded ship. It was a big influence on Douglas Adams (one of my longtime obsessions), who describes it thusly: “Sirens of Titan is just one of those books – you read it through the first time and you think it's very loosely, casually written. You think the fact that everything suddenly makes such good sense at the end is almost accidental. And then you read it a few more times, simultaneously finding out more about writing yourself, and you realize what an absolute tour de force it was, making something as beautifully honed as that appear so casual.”
Well, that’s every song covered from the album. The full release is only a week away. Which one are you most excited to hear? ✨

The Rocky Graziano Centennial
Born 100 years ago today former World Middleweight Champion — and show biz personality — Rocky Graziano (Thomas Rocco Barbella, 1919-1990).
The boxing section of Travalanche has grown to be pretty robust; nearly all the old pugs dabbled in show biz, and just about all of them were welcome brothers-in-arms. Grazianio had greater claims to fame than many in films and television, however. I’ll lead…
