5e Vex, the Gloomiest build (League of Legends)
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Horace “Hozure” Hsu. Made for Riot Games.)
Writing this build in a dark room late at night, super tired and stuff... Stuck inside cause of this dumb virus... AFKing in TFT for a Prestige skin like a tryhard... It’s kinda aesthetic, ya know?
GOALS
Another person to kill... Shadow? Can you handle it? - You don’t need best friends: you’ve got your Shadow. He’s the only cool one, because he’s basically you.
Ugh. Can we get some rain clouds in here? - No one likes a debbie downer, but everyone loves a good scare!
Man, walking suuuucks - Nowadays even the anti-dash champion needs a resetting dash. “Do the thing, Shadow.”
RACE
I could make Vex a Harengon to justify her rabbit ears, but she doesn’t really do much “jumping.” That, and I didn’t buy Wild Beyond the Witchlight. So Halfling still works good enough for a yordle. Your Dexterity increases by 2, and while your movement speed goes down to 25 you have Halfling Nimbleness to move through people who are bigger than you. You’re also “Brave” for advantage against fears (when you hang around the Shadow Isles stuff really isn’t that scary) and of course have good ol’ yordle Lucky to reroll Nat 1s.
Halflings are normally pretty cheerful but Ghostwise Halflings are perfectly dark. You’d normally increase your Wisdom by 1 but I’d recommend increasing your Constitution instead. But I mean, it’s not a big deal if you take Wisdom instead. It is only +1. You also get Silent Speech to keep to team chat with 30 foot telepathy. I mean, they have to understand your languages but at least you don’t have to tell everyone what you’re talking about. And oh yeah you obviously speak Common and Halfling.
ABILITY SCORES
15; CHARISMA - Turns out when you don’t release any new yordles for (wait it’s been 5 years since Kled was released? Holy shit) people end up wanting them.
14; DEXTERITY - Just because you don’t like walking doesn’t mean you’re slow.
13; CONSTITUTION - Imagine dying like a normie.
12; WISDOM - Vex isn’t sad because she’s pessimistic. She’s just realistic.
10; INTELLIGENCE - You’re too cool for school. (And I needed everything else more.)
8; STRENGTH - Ughhh I don’t wanna lift heavy stuff! I’m tired...
BACKGROUND
I guess you’re technically a Haunted One, even if the black mist is the best thing that ever happened to you. You get proficiency in Arcana and Survival as well as two language of your choice to talk to your "allies.” (I guess one of them has to be exotic or whatever.) (I’d personally pick Sylvan as the language of yordles and whatever language the majority of your party knows as your second choice, but that’s just me.)
The thing that sucks about having a Heart of Darkness is that everyone keeps trying to help you, thinking that your sadness (and the living shadow on your back) is something to be fixed. I mean, at least you can get the NPC normies to help you, as long as you don’t spook ‘em. “No doctors! I told you: being sad makes me happy.”

THE BUILD
or whatever...
LEVEL 1 - SORCERER 1
Starting as a Sorcerer for saving throws and stuff. Also proficiency in Intimidation and... Persuasion, I guess? Look, persuading people that you’re fine “no really” is a skill too.
I wonder what Sorcerous Origin we’ll pick... If only there was one based entirely on shadows and darkness... Oh hey Shadow Magic. As a Shadow Sorcerer you get Eyes of the Dark for 120 feet of Darkvision to see with your dumb Halfling eyes, and Strength of the Grave which will let Shadow take a hit for you. (As long as you make a good Charisma save.)
But of course the main appeal of a Sorcerer is the Spellcasting. You can learn 4 cantrips from the Sorcerer list and two level spells: For cantrips Mage Hand will let Shadow pick things up for you, Mind Sliver and Sword Burst will keep loud people off you both up close and from afar, and Prestidigitation will let you do all sorts of normie yordle magic. As for leveled spells Shield and Mage Armor are both kinda mandatory for some Personal Space.
LEVEL 2 - WARLOCK 1
What? Did you really think we wouldn’t get at least some support from adults? Work for that cool gloomy dude Viego and make a pack with The Undead. That’s because Undead are super dark and morbid and have a Form of Dread: as a bonus action you can turn on your Doom and Gloom for 1 minute. You get some temporary hit points, fear people when you hit them, and are immune to fears yourself. You can transform a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
You also get Pact Magic, which is different from normie Spellcasting because you get the cool stuff done with just a Short Rest. Anyways you can learn two cantrips from the Warlock list like Minor Illusion to have Shadow trick some normies and Eldritch Blast to Eldritch while you Blast. You can also grab some first level Warlock spells like Hex to mark people you don’t like, and Arms of Hadar if you really need your Personal Space.
LEVEL 3 - WARLOCK 2
Second level Warlocks get their Eldritch Invocations for extra stuff that you don’t have to put effort into. While Armor of Shadows does exist it’s honestly better for you to cast Mage Armor with a spell slot, so with that being said take Agonizing Blast to agonize while you blast and Eldritch Mind so you can keep your concentration around annoying people.
You can also learn another spell like Hellish Rebuke, because people just keep barging into your Personal Space!
LEVEL 4 - SORCERER 2
Now that you can agonize your blasts it’s time to go back to Sorcerer. Second level Sorcerers get a Font of Magic for Sorcery Points which currently don’t do much other than give you more spell slots. You can turn your Warlock slots into Sorcery points though, which is good because they come back on a Short Rest but the rest of your magic does not.
You can also cast another spell like Earth Tremor, to slow people down with Looming Darkness and sunder the land with your edginess.
LEVEL 5 - SORCERER 3
Third level Sorcerers finally get Metamagic! Empowered Spell will allow you to maximize your damage and retain your role as an artillery mage. Alternatively if you want to guarantee fears in your foes take Heightened Spell to give them disadvantage to resist Shadow’s influence.
If you want Shadow to stick around then Dust Devil will swirl around for quite awhile. Alternatively Shadow (Magic) also teaches you Darkness for free, and you can cast it with 2 Sorcery Points to see through it! Your friends can’t see through it, but you can team up with Shadow for some powerful combos when you can see them but they can’t see you!
Tumblr media
(Artwork by @jpdiasarts on Twitter.)
LEVEL 6 - SORCERER 4
4th level Sorcerers get the first of many Ability Score Improvements, but I can’t take Fey Touched every time for Flash. That, and we won’t give into basic yordle society. So let’s get value out of our Halfling race with the Second Chance feat. Along with +1 to your Charisma you can also use your reaction to make an enemy you can see attacking you reroll their attack roll, potentially making them miss.
Don’t use this against an attack that you can Shield against, but if someone gets a really good roll you can use this to get your Personal Space back! You can only use this once per combat though (it comes back when you roll for initiative!) so make sure to use it when it matters to keep your spell slots in check.
Oh and you can also learn another spell, and another cantrip! For your cantrip Shocking Grasp will help you push people away if they get too close (folk tend to react poorly when zapped by a tazer!) As for leveled spells Web will keep foes from dashing around, and is also pretty flammable. Huhn; wonder if that’ll be useful.
LEVEL 7 - SORCERER 5
5th level Sorcerers get gifts from the Ruined Queen Tasha in the form of Magical Guidance. You can use a Sorcery point to reroll a d20 if needed, potentially squeezing a success out. Don’t use this all the time (even if Warlock slots means you’ll have plenty of Sorcery points to spare) but this can be very useful in an emergency!
You can also learn third level spells and hey: Fireball may be a normie spell, but it’s still pretty effective. It’s maybe a bit too flashy to be Looming Darkness but it’s a good source of AoE damage which isn’t as loud and annoying as Shatter.
LEVEL 8 - SORCERER 6
All this time being a Shadow Sorcerer and Shadow hasn’t even done anything for us! Well how about you go out there and get some work done, Shadow? For 3 Sorcery points you can summon a Hound of Ill Omen to target a foe within 120 feet of you.
Shadow is basically a Dire Wolf except he’s Medium, has temp HP equal to half your Sorcerer level, can move through stuff (but takes damage if he ends his turn in stuff), and automatically chases whoever you told him to go for. Shadow will appear 30 feet away from the person you told him to get, and will chase after him like I said. All he’ll really do is attack the target you told him to though; he won’t even opportunity attack unless it’s the person you told him to chase. But if Shadow’s near someone they have disadvantage on their saving throws, which is pretty cool. (Unfortunately it’s only against spells, not your Form of Dread.)
Speaking of saving throws: Slow is a really great way to keep normies from running around doing annoying stuff. And you don’t have to hit Shadow with it which is pretty cool.
Tumblr media
(Artwork by @Lauriquess on Twitter.)
LEVEL 9 - WARLOCK 3
Third level Warlocks get to choose their Pact Boon: if you want a really small Shadow go for Pact of the Chain, and if you want your cool necklace go for Pact of the Talisman, but we’ll be going for Pact of the Tome because you’re mostly a spellcaster really. (And we definitely don’t have enough cantrips.)
You get a Book of Shadows (See? Books can be cool!) with three cantrips: take Thaumaturgy to be extra spooky, Vicious Mockery for some sick teenage burns, and Sapping Sting to make normies fall over when you fear them. Some might say that 10 total cantrips by level 9 is a bit overkill but look on the dark side: you’ve now got a cantrip for basically every type of saving throw in case you can’t hit with Eldritch Blast!
Honestly none of the Pact Boons are particularly important for Vex so I picked the one that made the most sense. Feel free to take something more practical since 10 cantrips is admittedly overkill.
Oh and you can learn more Warlock spells, so now it’s time to finally take Misty Step. For Flash!
LEVEL 10 - WARLOCK 4
4th level Warlocks get another Ability Score Improvement: getting more Charisma for better spellcasting is probably a good idea.
You can also learn another spell, and hey look another cantrip. For your cantrip even if more damage options are kinda overkill by this point Chill Touch inflicts Grievous Wounds, which might be useful. You can also grab another second level spell and Blindness / Deafness (which is on the Undead list) is far more useful than any of the other normie options you’d have at this level anyways.
LEVEL 11 - WARLOCK 5
5th level Warlocks get another Eldritch Invocation, and even if you’ve got a resetting dash you’re still a squishy mage. So grab Tomb of Levistus for Zhonya's Hourglass.
You can also grab third level Warlock spells now! Remember how I took Fireball and complained that it wasn’t a good replica of Looming Darkness? Well Hunger of Hadar takes your Concentration but it’s a lot edgier!
LEVEL 12 - WARLOCK 6
6th level Undead Warlocks have become Grave Touched by the mist, and can make mist of their own! Along with being able survive without eating, drinking, or breathing you can turn any of your damage into necrotic damage. If you’re in your Form of Dread however you can add one extra damage die to whatever you’re using to get people to buzz off, adding to that morbid and macabre aesthetic.
You can also add another spell and if you’re bored with Shadow being a wolf how about you make them a Summon Shadowspawn? Weaponize your Fury, Despair, or Fear (I’d honestly recommend Fury since it has good synergy with your Dreadful Aspect) and work together with Shadow to deal with all your annoying foes! I’d also suggest replacing Hellish Rebuke with Counterspell, because even if the former fits better the latter is way more useful.
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Jennifer Wuestling. Made for Riot Games.)
LEVEL 13 - WARLOCK 7
7th level Warlocks can finally activate Shadow Surge. Relentless Hex lets you mark a foe with Hex and then dash to them. And technically you can move Hex around after the fact to reset your dashes! And while you’re at it you may as well grab Dimension Door for Summoner Teleport.
You could also upgrade Summon Shadowspawn to Summon Aberration if you so desire, but Summon Shadowspawn is more than strong enough and far more fun and thematic.
LEVEL 14 - WARLOCK 8
Another Ability Score Improvement. Yay. Cap off your Charisma for the best spellcasting you can get out of Shadow. You can also learn another spell, but we’re going to wait for...
LEVEL 15 - WARLOCK 9
9th level Warlocks get another Eldritch Invocation: even if it’s kinda ineffective Ascendant Step is still pretty useful to have Shadow carry you around. I mean yeah it’s slow but not that much slower than walking for you, and Shadow can lift you up in the air. “Shadow; carry me...”
You can also learn 5th level spells. If one guy’s being particularly annoying Negative Energy Flood can get them to shut up and work for you. Alternatively if you want more Personal Space Antilife Shell is on the Undead List and will make sure normies keep faaaaar away.
LEVEL 16 - WARLOCK 10
Are you ever so sick of everything that you just want to explode? Necrotic Husk has two benefits: for one you’re resistant to Necrotic damage, and immune while in your Form of Dread because being around Viego for so long means you’re used to his work.
But additionally when you are reduced to 0 hit points you can use your reaction to drop to 1 hit point instead and cause your body to explode! Each creature of your choice within 30 feet of you takes 2d10 + your warlock level in Necrotic damage. You do gain 1 level of exhaustion after using this, and after using it once you can’t do so again until you finish 1d4 long rests. So I’d perhaps use Strength of the Grave first unless you really need to lash out.
I hope you weren’t expecting more spells because you aren’t getting them from Warlock: just a cantrip. By this point we’ve honestly got far too many cantrips so I dunno maybe just grab Prestidigitation again and swap it out from Sorcerer when you get the chance.
Tumblr media
(Artwork by @DukkoArt on Twitter.)
LEVEL 17 - SORCERER 7
Finally back to our yordle roots: 7th level Sorcerers get 4th level spells like Storm Sphere for a sphere of darkness and angst. But I mean the real benefit is that you get more Sorcery points let’s be real.
Oh and you can swap out Prestidigitation for Gust I guess. Spooky winds and stuff. Either this level or next level depending on your DM.
LEVEL 18 - SORCERER 8
Your last Ability Score Improvement... You’re gonna have to ask: what’s more important to me? More Metamagic, or more Eldritch Invocations? If Metamagic is to your liking take Metamagic Adept for Careful Spell and Distant Spell along with two more Sorcery points to use on them. If you like Eldritch Invocations though Eldritch Adept has a ton of options as a level 10 Warlock. I won’t tell you what invocation to take (they’re all great boosts but none of them shout out at me as something you should prioritize) as there are plenty of options to make your own Vex now that they’re all grown up.
I can at least tell you what spell to take: none of them! Wait until next level!
Oh and you can swap out Prestidigitation for Gust I guess.
LEVEL 19 - SORCERER 9
9th level Sorcerers can learn 5th level spells which means you’ve finally caught up to your Warlock slots. And look at that: the good wish Tasha gave you one last way to weaponize Shadow. Bigby’s Hand does a bunch of cool stuff and is pretty much the ultimate way to make Shadow crush some normies. (Most literally.) Alternatively if you want to borrow from Viego Enervation will let you heal from the mist and also do some damage. Great if you’re stuck in a corner with a bunch of annoying normies.
LEVEL 20 - SORCERER 10
Our final level is the 10th level of Sorcerer for one last spell, one last cantrip, and one last metamagic option! For your metamagic it’s honestly about time you take Quickened Spell to up your DPS. For your cantrip take Mold Earth to dig holes in the sand and brood. And as for your leveled spell? Honestly I just like Synaptic Static, and there isn’t much else I want anyways.
FINAL BUILD
PROS
We’re all doomed. But you’re more doomed - 5th level spells pack more than enough punch, and you’ve got plenty of them. Warlock slots will always be at your fingertips, and Sorcery points give you plenty of flexibility too!
I can feel it: someone’s happy over there! - Along with giving you a temporary hitpoint shield Form of Dread puts a nice bit of CC on all your abilities. Keep enemies scared and sad with tons of Doom and Gloom!
Ugh. Stop copying me Shadow! - Hounds of Ill Omen are cool. Summon Shadowspawn is also cool. Bigby’s Hand is especially cool. And hey: even your lower level Concentration spells like Hex? They’re pretty cool too.
CONS
Ughhhhhhhhhh this is gonna take foreeeever! - You’ve got limited fumes, even for a coffeelock. Form of Dread has limited uses and there’s only so much spell slot melting you can do to get your magic back.
I’m dancing... Happy? - You’ve got a really boring set of really normie skills... and if you’re playing Vex the way she’s meant to be played you’re probably not going to use any of them except for Intimidation.
Yup; the glass is half empty - Half your levels are Sorcerer levels, meaning you’re squishy. You’ve also got Mage Armor on which guess what: also means you’re squishy. People who hit teenagers sure are lame but it’s really not hard to Power Word Kill you.
But I guess you’re pretty cool overall. Shadow’s an alright partner and you can spread Ruination even without Viego. Trudge around and get people to frown for once. There’s nothing wrong with being sad, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting the world to be sad. But do try to at least be happy out of character, because we play games to have fun. I mean, who’d play a video game that just makes you depressed and angry?

survey by tickticktmr
Do people spell your name wrong very often? LOL, of course. When your name is the less-common variant, expect it to be misspelled all the time. Only like 2 out of 10 times do people ask me if my name is spelled with an i or y, but it’s them I appreciate the most.
Who will your next phone call be with? I’m not expecting any phone call for a while.
Would you rather be taken or single? Ugh, taken. I love being in a relationship; I always enjoyed looking after someone else and doing things to make them happy. Being independent has its perks too, but I always feel lonely at the end of the day.
Do you plan to move any time soon? Nope, I’m taking it slow.
Would you rather have pink or green hair? I’d go with green but only if it’s a dark shade, like the color of seaweed. I wouldn’t appreciate neon green on my hair.
Do you miss anyone's smile right now? I saw it again yesterday, so I’m good.
Do you want kids? I used to, but now I’m back to the drawing board when it comes to kids.
Do you know who sings 'Let it rock'? It’s not ringing a bell, and honestly the first thing I remembered was the Goofy Goober Rock song from the Spongebob Movie HAHAHA. Sorry to disappoint.
Do you think stargazing is a romantic thing to do with someone? Sure, but I think it also works platonically. Stargazing is generally a nice and relaxing thing to do whether you’re alone, with an SO, with a friend, or with a bunch of friends.
Do you want to tell someone something right now? Yes, but I can’t.
What's your opinion on sex before marriage? It’s whatever. People can do what they want, and the only things they should watch out for are consent and being safe.
Do you own a car? I don’t own it, i.e. I didn’t pay for it, but it was given to me so I can have a car to drive myself when I need to go to places.
What is something that is always in your kitchen cupboards? Rice.
The last person you spoke to: have you ever lied to them? For sure. Growing up with strict parents taught me how to lie convincingly.
Have you ever made out with them? That person is my mother. No.
What woke you up today? I did so naturally.
Have you ever had a pet rock? No. People do that? How do rocks become pets?
Have you ever been lost? LOL like the lost-in-life kind of lost? Sure. I’m going through it at present because life threw a shit ton of curveballs at me over the course of two months.
How long is it until your sibling)s) birthday? My brother’s birthday is in 5 months; my sister’s is in 10 as she celebrated her birthday just last September.
Are you lazy? I can be if I want to. But I’m not always, of course.
Do you read the newspaper? No.
Have you ever heard of the song 'Teeth the size of piano keys'? No.
Who was your last thought about? You got me thinking about my sister because of the earlier question about her birthday.
What made you in the mood you are in right now? I’m relaxed at the moment and that’s thanks to the fact that it’s Sunday, I’ve recently gotten into a new hobby and a show I can dive into, and tomorrow’s a holiday so no work for me :) Gonna make the most out of this evening for sure.
Have you ever told someone to go to Hell? I’ve most likely done so, but only as a joke.
Do you know anyone named Jos? As in, pronounced ‘Jaws’? No. That’s one of the more unique names I’ve heard.
What's your font on MSN/AIM? I don’t use either. I never used either, either.
What's more important to you: books or music? Music.
Do you have any magazine subscriptions? Nah. Even when I still collected magazines, I preferred physically going to magazine stands and buying new issues. It was more exciting that way.
Has someone ever really hurt you without even realizing? Yeah.
What do you sleep in? A bed, most often. Sometimes I’ll pass out on the couch but that doesn’t happen too much anymore.
Have you changed in the past six months? Yes, both naturally and forcibly. It’s been... quite a year for me, even if we put Covid aside.
Do you bite your nails? When I’m anxious. I haven’t had to do this for a while though, and I mostly did when I was in school awaiting a presentation I had to make.
Do you like the name Natasha? I used to like it when I was younger, but it slipped out of my favorites for no real reason at some point; it just did.
What's a food that starts with the last letter of your first name? Naan.
Does your house have a white picket fence? It used to, but we had them removed after a string of typhoons increasingly deteriorated their quality over the years.
Have you ever been given flowers? Sure.
Do you have a YouTube account? How many videos have you watched on it? I do. Is the second one a real question lol? I’ve watched thousands, as I’m sure most people who use YouTube have done as well. This is like asking how many tweets in total I’ve read on Twitter since I first signed up.
Do you know anyone who is really, really conceited? My mom can be one. She likes to act as if she can do no wrong.
Who’s the last person you told off? My manager at work. I did something she asked me to do and followed the instructions down to a T...and then she said I shouldn’t have done it? That kind of thing happens at work every now and then and it’s fucking exhausting. It’s like every move I make has its own script and the script changes every five minutes.
Are you optimistic? Sure, but not always.
How do you get to school/your job? I work from home, but under normal circumstances I would’ve been driving myself to the workplace.
Love or lust? Love.
Do you smoke cigarettes? Yeah, but I keep my use of it at an extreme minimum. I’ve only done it socially and I’ve only asked for cigarettes from my friends who have their own packs (and were willing to give me a couple of sticks, of course).
Have you ever been so mad at someone you hurt them? Like, physically? Yes, but it’s only because I was hit first.
Have you ever met someone you met online in person? This is on surveys a lot...yes. I’ve met several online friends who were once in the wrestling circle with me; and one time I bought a product from someone online so we had to meet up for that, too.
Have you ever not studied for a test and gotten 100%? Probably not a 100%, but close. I never studied for my Language exams in middle school because it was just literal English grammar, which I was already good at by that point.
Where is your boyfriend/girlfriend right now? I don’t have any.
Have you ever won a contest for public speaking? No, but I’ve joined one. I got a little frazzled by the middle of my speech (it was impromptu and I didn’t know my question until I got on stage) so in the end that cost me first place.
Are there any woods near where you live? Nah, it’s a private village so it’s super suburban and no hidden woods or forests anywhere.
What did you do today? So far I’ve watched 3/4 of an episode of Start Up, cried, washed my face, washed the glass that I drank soju from last night, and sat up in bed and continued this survey.
Have you ever considered suicide? Yes.
Do you have a lot of myspace friends? No. I never really used my account.
What was your favorite subject in grade six? Science was fun then. Partly because I could tell the teacher liked me, and partly because her method of teaching was big on memorization of terms and processes which was always more my speed.
Hot chocolate or coffee? I could go for coffee right now. Hot chocolate is best when I’m on vacation and having breakfast at a fancy hotel.
Do you like your neighbours? I don’t dislike them, that’s for sure.
Did you do something stupid today? Not yet.
Name a five letter word that starts with the same letter as your first name. Ripen.
What time did you go to sleep last night? Around midnight. That soju/Yakult combo knocked me out.
Did you have fun yesterday? It was an okay day, sure. I got productive and even drank for a bit last night just because.
How many people are online on your MSN/AIM right now?
Would you like to/did you drop out of school? No, that was never a part of my plans.
What was your favorite book as a child? If we’re talking kids’ books, I never got tired of rereading Corduroy and The Giving Tree. I also had a book of poems and nursery rhymes and I remember taking a liking for The Owl and the Pussycat because it was the longest poem in the book and it helped me train my English.
How far away does your best friend live from you? Both live around 20-30 minutes away, just in different directions.
Do you think you could write a book? A memoir, yes. Anything fictional, no.
Is it hard to tell someone you like them? Yes.
How many bedrooms does your house have? 4.
Do you know anyone who can't speak French? Nearly everyone I know.
When's the last time you brushed your teeth? Last night.
Are you the same religion as your parents? Legally. But I disowned Catholicism/Christianity a long time ago.
Would you do anything for a certain person? Yes, I would.
Do you know anyone in your science class? The last science class I took was a course on chemistry, and I only knew one person in that class.
Describe your room: Cozy, starting to get a little cluttered, big enough for one person.
Do you still write letters to Santa, even when you know he's not real? No, and I never wrote letters addressed to a Santa.
Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Nope.
Have you ever been lied to by a girlfriend/boyfriend? I’m sure she did.
Where is your dad right now? I can’t tell whose turn it is to make breakfast today, so he’s either in the kitchen cooking or in their bedroom watching TV.
Are any of your relatives pregnant? As far as I know, no. But I also haven’t been on Facebook in a while, so I’m poorly updated on what my relatives have been up to.
How many garabe buckets are in your house? I have no idea what this is talking about.
Would you want the truth if you asked if your pants made you look horrible? If I asked that then yeah, I obviously would want to hear the truth.

ACCESSIBILITY  /    NAVIGABILITY.     ★★★★★ With this kind of theme having maximum number of 4 links ,  I like how the first thing your blog immediately showed me is the links because the boxes and font color just pops out. You did what you can with limited url slots and the navigation page for everything makes it easier for everyone to browse through since they’re all redirected pages.   ➤ GENERAL ADVICE FOR EVERYONE :   In my opinion ,  it’s better to have a good balance and choice of usage between redirected pages and custom pages. Too much use of custom pages for the aesthetic can be annoying for a potential partner browsing your blog because most people just want to read your content and not to be kept redirected to different pages ,  especially if they’re incoherent with no uniform choice of design.  Worst combo to send your potential partners away since they can also feel lazy not to read your content.  Yes ,  people do that and it’s not their fault since the human brain has limited attention span.  Too much redirected pages works if you want simple ,  straightforward navigation but it wouldn’t hurt to add a little flair sometimes.  This flair can be from the custom page and redirected page mix usage or from how your content is formatted too.
VISUAL IMPACT  /   AESTHETICS.      ★★★★  Absolutely love the consistency in your theme color palette !  Neutrals and red as highlights is a good duo.  Everyone is entitled to their own tastes of their representation and interpretation of their muses ,  though might I suggest that the color of your highlights be a little lighter ?  The theme and fonts are neutrals and dark ,  so it will help the eyes adjust and find the emphasised content you’re aiming to be read if your highlights are light or medium light so not to deviate with the theme’s aesthetic. However ,  I don’t feel your font for the header though ...  seems a bit off for me but it’s just a difference between preferences ,  no biggie. ➤ GENERAL ADVICE FOR EVERYONE :   It’s always good to have a good choice of what font goes with what.  In my case I use a lot of font sizes and properties to complement the theme with the format or the actual font used.  Usually I do cursive and straight combination ,  not one over other overpowering each other.  Google Fonts with html codes and stuff is your best friend.
SUBSTANCE  /         INFORMATIVE.    ★★★★  Good info on the biography and verses since they have whatever pumps the blog alive.  I don’t know if it’s in your intentions but a PERSONALITY section is good too in supporting your psychological evaluation stats page since mostly ,  numbers don’t really make sense to humans.  They’re more of the qualitative type ,  makes it easier for them to understand if you link those numbers to words of brief description of your muse’s behavior and attitude.  This is especially crucial for OCs to have as one of my preferences so I’ll know if our muses can clash for fun or just clash without sense ...  you can gauge what an interaction can be just by reading the other’s personality section and see how it helps with the plotting and relationship dynamic.
READABILITY  /        LEGIBILITY.          ★★★★  The colour of the highlights is what I’ve said earlier but overall ,  the font colors are good since I can read them.
BRANDING  /        WOW FACTOR.       ★★★★★ The mysteriousness with the PERSONALITY section gone can be a pro and con sometimes and since I read your about page ,  there’s suspense in how you came up with her name because it’s really thought - evoking.  I associate your muse with a greek figure and it gives me something to think about especially as it can help me pinpoint a plot for us ,  if ever.  I also appreciate the stats page like they’re very unique with some stats I’ve never seen before so it makes up for the substance as well.  There’s visual - spatial intelligence ,  etc. which makes your muse unique due to that analysis.  Little details matter.
02.  @jollynephilim .  supernatural’s  jack kline by dipper.
ACCESSIBILITY  /    NAVIGABILITY.     ★★★★ Might enhance a bit with positioning since some of the links are scattered on top of the side header  WHO IS IN CONTROL  which makes it hard for me to ignore in a visual - wise focus.  You can also experiment by using other symbols or images since the links are eye - catching due to animation.
VISUAL IMPACT  /  AESTHETICS.      ★★★  I’ve been very familiar with this kind of theme since I am guilty of being tempted to use the same ,  although this one has become mainstream so I am very used to seeing the same formula over and over again.  Something new might be good or an innovation of the original theme though it doesn’t mean you should sell your soul to photoshop or html masters.  The background edit is well - appreciated since it blends with the dark color palette you chose.  You can make your theme a little bit refined with the bars by changing their gray rose  ( ?? )  background to something  continuous  since the way I view it on my browser ,  I can see where the background picture of the bars started and ended.   ➤ GENERAL ADVICE FOR EVERYONE :   Being continuous and blending are two elements useful in visually enhancing one’s blog.  It shows unity and consistency.  Be careful in integrating too much of the links or headers in the background because it can get to the point that it’s annoying to find or read through bleeding colours of the theme and other factors.
SUBSTANCE  /         INFORMATIVE.    ★★★  Love the profile ,  brief and concise.  Can do something more with adding a few rare info that will make your Jack stand out from others ...  Nevertheless ,  I like how informed I am with the  BACKGROUND  since for someone who hadn’t caught up with Supernatural ,  it works.
READABILITY  /        LEGIBILITY.         ★★★★★ Readable.  However the highlight color concerns me since it doesn’t complement the background color palette because the blue sticks out ,  but other than that ,  it works.
BRANDING  /        WOW FACTOR.       ★★★  Add a bit more on the info and finding a selling point on a  BRAND  that will classify your Jack as their own.  Like putting out something new that will make your muse distinguishable from other duplicates.  Additionally ,  I’ve seen your threads or opens and they are very intriguing since they give rise to questionable exploration of sensitive topics ,  which is good since it’s a different approach to Jack’s character.
03.  @kidhnter .  supernatural’s claire novak by heather.
ACCESSIBILITY  /    NAVIGABILITY.     ★★★★ Everything is accessible except the ask box.  Hopefully you can fix the codes for that.
VISUAL IMPACT  / AESTHETICS.      ★★★★ I’ve been guilty in trying the same formula in themes ,  but you get a star instead of three for bonus in using a complementary color palette.  However it gives me the signal that it’s playing too safe so you might like to consider using dark or light shades of one font color if one color is your drift.  The black starry header sticks out for me ,  and you can edit it to even or level out the gradient since it seems cut off in the middle in my view.  Being continuous and consist are qualities in keeping an aesthetic alive.
SUBSTANCE  /         INFORMATIVE.    ★★★  Fun facts or trivias are really appreciated since I use the same formula depending on which muse I have ,  so I really like that cute bit.  But I can’t give an overall review since your page is still incomplete which is totally understandable. ➤ GENERAL ADVICE FOR EVERYONE :   One of my biggest pet peeves that turn me off is when people have blogs but don’t have much in their pages.  I understand that they haven’t found the time to complete them because real life comes first ,  but at least give me a little information especially if I don’t know your muse and I’m not too interested to look them up in my search bar ,  sorry.  I’d rather read someone’s writing that’s not copy pasted from wikia than actually reading on wikia because it gives me an insight on how this person writes.  Do they focus on content and details ?  Do they write in purple prose or straightforward ?  Things like that are analysed whenever I read someone’s about pages.  Usually before I release a blog out in the wild ,  I complete my pages as soon as possible with deliberate planning because I don’t want to advertise an  EMPTY  blog.
READABILITY  /        LEGIBILITY.         ★★★★★ Very readable since everything is organised and categorised through the theme’s menu and aesthetic appeal plus function.
BRANDING  /        WOW FACTOR.       ★★★★★   Gold and black makes a statement ,  take advantage of that color scheme and remember the starry background of your bars.  I love the BIKER BARBIE bit because it has its charismatic appeal and different format on how usually people do that.  BIKER BARBIE  brand is iconic for claire and I can see where you’re coming from ,  but from an analytic perspective ,  it’s also a clash of character for claire but harmoniously it works out.  Good job ,  makes it easy for me and very distinguishable to remember your brand that makes me think that Ah ,  this is the BIKER BARBIE claire.
04.  @crackedfaith .  supernatural’s castiel by vix.
ACCESSIBILITY  /    NAVIGABILITY.     ★★★★★ Very thought out due to the number of links and the flow of the story of your blog through the order of the links. ➤ GENERAL ADVICE FOR EVERYONE :   Content is not the only thing you should plan writing for.  The moment you have the blog is the same moment you’ve already started writing your interpretation which is seen in the way you presented your blog through graphic edits ,  links , pages ,  etc.   Content is not the only thing that tells your character’s story ,  your blog does too and that’s why it’s important to pay attention to details.
VISUAL IMPACT  / AESTHETICS.      ★★★★  This theme sure as hell takes your time coding so I really appreciate and love how you made it your own.  I feel ,  because I used the same theme in different occasion and it’s a pain to code but totally worth it.  I love the colours very much ... They give an outer - worldly vibe but at the same time ,  very much Castiel. ➤ GENERAL ADVICE FOR EVERYONE :   Visual impact and aesthetics may affect your branding and people’s impression of you and your muse ,  but it does not define you.  Always remember that.  It does give identity though so like I said ,  pay attention to even the tiniest details because you never know who reads your blog.  Visual impact and aesthetics also affect readability levels ,  take note of that one since overly coded and overly aesthetic blogs can repel writers who can’t read shit due to lots of glitters on the blog and all other many stuff going on that they can’t understand.
SUBSTANCE  /         INFORMATIVE.    ★★★  Since you haven’t completed your about and verses pages ,  I cannot say it works but I appreciate that the guidelines are already set.  Very ,  very critical piece to put in the blog because it is what dictates if you will write or will you not write with others.
READABILITY  /        LEGIBILITY.         ★★★  Don’t know if you can change the font but as much as if you can ,  do it.  The main chubby font works on the container but it doesn’t work on the sidebar.  I had to squint my eyes to make out the words because of the heavily color gray.  Try using lighter shades for font color and other styles as well.  Google Fonts is your best friend.
BRANDING  /        WOW FACTOR.       ★★★★★ Very iconic.  GRACE/LESS tagline is such a catch for me ,  it’s really great.  The background also has an impact on me because it reminds me of the cosmos ,  of the time of The Fall scene ,  and I love how you incorporated the sense of falling in your graphics.
05.  @sanguinebite .  van helsing’s verona by demi.
ACCESSIBILITY  /    NAVIGABILITY.   ★★★★★ On the side and easily seen.  Clean cut ,  just pops out next to sidebar.
VISUAL IMPACT  / AESTHETICS.    ★★★★  Can do a bit more with the font used on the sidebar and its format.  I love Times New Roman and its use in this theme.  Maybe try experimenting with shades of black and gray and consider giving other colors a chance for highlights so people can see what you’re emphasising through bold ,  italic properties.  Other than that ,  overall theme is a choice that works.  The cursor is cute and the edit on the sidebar photo looks cool ,  so extra points for those two.
SUBSTANCE  /         INFORMATIVE.    ★★ Kind of empty ,  but the rules are established so that’s appreciated.  It helps that I know your muse but what if other people don’t know ?  I suggest doing a temporary info scribbles on the pages or just a simple TBA / WIP.
READABILITY  /        LEGIBILITY.         ★★★★ Readable ,  I don’t have to squint so much so that’s a good thing.  It depends on the device used about the font size ,  but try making the font size a bit bigger for the body since it’s too small for me.
BRANDING  /        WOW FACTOR.       ★★★  Older than Rome itself holds great potential to immortality vibes of branding material ,  it’s a good tagline I like.  Maybe you can link your muse to a roman figure and create a brand from there.  Qualities also help you think about a good brand as well as your muse’s history.  Who or what reminds you of your muse ?  What can you take from there and make it your own ?

just peachy.
character: kang daniel.
genre: soulmate!au.
word count: 2047w.
prompt: soulmates have matching tattoos and these two idiots have never noticed their soulmates that have been standing right in front of them the whole time.
when she was twelve, she met kang euigeon through her brother yoon jisung. when she was thirteen, she watched as a small peach etched itself slowly onto the skin below her collarbone. now that she’s nineteen, she still has yet to find her soulmate, but she surely wishes that her soulmate is kang euigeon– now kang daniel– because she developed a helpless crush on him seven years ago.
kang daniel wishes that she’s his soulmate too, because he stopped seeing her as a little girl two years ago. he used to stare at her with a brother-like endearment the same way jisung did, but now, he stares at her with stars and daydreams in his eyes.
it’s impossible though– they’ve known each other for years but there hasn’t been a single sign of them being soulmates. jisung can only shake his head, because he’s seen both of their tattoos.
both of their tattoos in the form of a small inked in peach right over the skin underneath their collarbones. both tattoos, in perfect replication of each other.
“it’ll be fun, kiddo. i promise,” jisung says as he drags her throughout the mall. she looks at him doubtfully, a grimace on her features as her older brother drags her into a store that she’s never been to.
as far as she (and jisung) are concerned, she’s not a party person. but as far as jisung is concerned, his little sister absolutely has to be there for what’s going to be the best frat party of the year. especially when it’s his and daniel’s fraternity that’s going to be throwing it.
“you’ll meet new friends, i’ll introduce you to some of my friends who can help you around campus, and it’ll be like freshman orientation but without all the awkward icebreaker activities and teachers!” he chirps happily.
“but we have to do something about your wardrobe because you can’t show up to the party in a matching pink sweatshirt and sweatsuit combo.”
“don’t slander the pink sausage organization like that!” she protests loudly, offense in her tone as she wrenches away from jisung and sits down with a pout on her lips. jisung presses his lips together in an unamused expression, flicking her forehead before moving to find her clothes.
her phone rings as jisung leaves, displaying the name “pink sausage 2″ in a large font. as soon as she picks up, woojin excitedly asks: “are you going to the frat party tonight?”
“i am,” she grumbles in response, and on the other side of the screen, jihoon snatches woojin’s phone.
“great! we’ll see you there!” woojin snatches his phone back from jihoon, glaring at the older boy.
“we’re initiates for the frat,” woojin explains, “… jihoon made me…”
in the background, jihoon’s loud voice is heard again. “you should try to go for our sister sorority!”
she ponders the thought for a moment, recalling doyeon and yoojung’s conversations about joining.
“anyway, we have to get ready, we’ll see you later, alright?” woojin says, ready to hang up the phone. jihoon takes it before woojin can.
“oh, and please don’t wear the pink sausage outfit. wear something cute– maybe something that’ll grab daniel’s attention.” the teasing wink can almost be visualized, but nonetheless, she scoffs and hangs up the phone before jihoon or woojin can say anything else.
at that exact timing, jisung shoves a loose flowery pink off-the-shoulder top at her, paired with a blue denim skirt and a brownish-tan wedges. he hands her a black ribbon choker, too.
“go try it on. you’re going to look adorable,” jisung says as he ushers her into the dressing rooms.
and so, left without an option, she does try it on.
when she heads out, jisung’s eyes automatically drift to her exposed peach tattoo, and a mischievous glint in his eyes appear as he supportively claps his hands in a round motion.
later that evening, jihoon and woojin arrive to the party with her in tow. her hair is tossed to the front of her right collarbone, effectively covering a quarter of the exposed skin and her peach tattoo.
jisung grins when he sees her, whisking her away from jihoon and woojin and pointedly gathering her hair to cascade over her back. stubbornly, she returns her hair to its original styling, causing jisung to look at her with faux disapproval before turning to his friends.
“seongwoo, sungwoon, jaehwan, minhyun! this is my little sister.” he pinches her cheek for extra emphasis, but she offers them a smile nonetheless.
“hi.” despite her greeting addressing the four boys directly in front of her, her eyes flit around the near vicinity for the one peach-haired boy whom she seeks.
“daniel’s not here yet,” jisung chuckles, throwing an arm around her shoulder before turning to the other boys. “she has a little crush on daniel.”
“what the heck! how could i even have a crush on someone who isn’t my soulmate?” she retorts, smacking jisung’s arm. the other boys chuckle at the sibling interaction and sungwoon offers her a cup of fruit punch.
“your older brother specifically told me not to give you anything mixed with alcohol,” sungwoon explains as jisung nods approvingly, fist bumping the bartender.
“hey guys– whoa, wait, am i seeing correctly? you’re wearing a skirt? and heels? and an off-the-shoulder top?” everyone’s head lifts at the sudden arrival of daniel, whose cheeks are tinted pink as he looks at her.
her cheeks go pink as well– partially at the attention from daniel and partially because he looks extremely good in the outfit that he dons– a black and white plaid that hits the middle of his thighs, black jeans, a white short-sleeve underneath, and newly dyed light brown hair.
“jisung made me,” she stammers out.
“oh please daniel, you act as if you didn’t take her to prom as her date two months ago,” jisung smirks, downing a shot of beer that sungwoon offered him prior.
seongwoo whistles through his teeth before making space for daniel to sit beside him.
“well, excuse me for not having found my soulmate yet, forcing me to go with a friend,” she shoots back, trying to quell the increasing heat on her cheeks.
daniel grimaces a little bit at her words, but it goes unnoticed by her.
it does not, however, go unnoticed by jisung, who takes a deep breath to refrain from smacking his palm against his forehead.
phase three of the plan, commence.
only minutes after she separates from jisung’s friends to head to yoojung and doyeon, a loud voice that she recognizes as jaehwan’s bellows throughout the house.
“seven minutes in heaven starts in five minutes! put your names into the fishbowl now!” he goes around the rest of the fraternity house yelling the same scripted words as minhyun trudges behind him to collect names.
“are you going to join?” doyeon asks, looking at her two friends. when doyeon receives minimal responses from both, she takes three slips of paper and writes down their name on each.
seeing no bad in it and no longer able to argue against anyone after being dragged to a fraternity party and being blown away by daniel’s new light brown hair and just daniel, she does nothing to resist.
meanwhile, jisung prepares a bowl that’s filled with her name, specifically to hand to daniel when it’s his turn to choose.
“don’t you think you’re meddling too much?” minhyun drawls, watching as jisung repeatedly writes his little sister’s name on multiple slips of paper.
“listen, minhyun,” he says as he slips another paper into the second fishbowl, “i’ve watched them beat around the bush for two years on daniel’s part and seven years on her part.” he slips the seventh paper into the fishbowl before tucking it behind the fraternity’s group picture. “i have to do this, or i’m going to go crazy.”
he picks your name out of the fishbowl minhyun had passed around, slipping it into his own fishbowl. “they’re going to find out that they’re soulmates now, or i will announce it to the whole university over the intercom.”
ten minutes later, she finds herself sitting beside woojin on the couch in the living room, his arm slung comfortably and amiably over her bare shoulders.
she doesn’t mind since she and woojin have been best friends since they were four, but daniel avoids her gaze throughout the whole game, only able to look at her and woojin in glances before brimming with jealousy.
jisung notes the amount of times daniel looks at his little sister, and he lost count after five minutes.
“daniel!” jaehwan picks up the second bowl filled with one specific name from the table, discreetly tucking the other one away for the time-being. “your turn.”
jaehwan strides over to daniel who has his arm lazily slung over the armrest, and jaehwan’s eyes flicker to you briefly as daniel picks the slip of paper at the surface.
the whole world seems to slow down as daniel reads off her name in a husked voice of disbelief, and her senses blur as her friends and brother whoop and cheer.
woojin forces her to stand up and shoves her towards daniel, who instinctively holds out his arms to catch her as she stumbles into him. behind her, jihoon and woojin high five each other and daniel’s friends’ whooping gets louder.
“into the closet you two go,” jisung sings as he leads you both into the cabinet the frat had bought solely for the purpose of seven minutes in heaven, closing and locking the door behind him.
daniel’s heart rate quickens at the sudden body heat he’s being crowded with, and he doesn’t know what comes over him when he stammers out a simple “hey.”
in that moment, he concludes that even though she’s probably not his soulmate, she’s worth the risk, even though she’s most definitely not his soulmate, he’s developed inevitable feelings and he wants her.
honestly, how could he not with how she laughs at his lame jokes while swatting at jisung for his even lamer jokes? with how he swears that peter and rooney love her more than him, even though he’d never admit that? how she always refuses to be swept up into societal standards or pressure? wow, he could go on and on, but with seven minutes slowly ticking down, he decides that it’s time to take action.
“i know we’re probably not soulmates, but i think– wait no– i really like you. and i’m… i’m willing to take the risk of being with you even if years down the road, we might find out actual soulmates and be forced to separate. i think you’re worth it. i think you’re worth everything to me. i think i might have found my everything in you two years ago– wait, i wasn’t supposed to confess how long i liked yo–”
his ramble ends with a gentle caress on his cheek and soft cherubic lips on his. he melts into the moment immediately, wrapping his arms around her waist.
when jaehwan flings the closet door open, the wolf whistles are louder than they were when daniel had plucked out the slip of paper with her name.
later that night after daniel walks her to her dorm, daniel anxiously sits jisung down for a serious talk.
“hyung. i know she and i aren’t soulmates, but i hope that you can still approve of us and give us your support since she and i both agreed to separate peacefully if we met our actual soulmates.”
jisung sighs in slight annoyance, which daniel mistakes as disapproval, only for jisung to wave his hand frantically in denial, flustered as he yelled his approval for the relationship.
jisung facepalms as daniel leaves the room with enlightened shoulders after the talk, but he decides not to tell either of them that they’re actually soulmates.
the first time they make love two months later, daniel lets out the brightest smile as he peppers the area around her tattoo with butterfly kisses and they both swear they’ve never been happier in their lives. they’ve also never felt any more stupid in their lives, but the happiness and giggles of glee as they carry through their love making overrides it all.

Brutal is an adjective often applied to video games, usually when someone is describing a bloody headshot or tricky combo they’ve pulled off in a fighting game. At The Gates houses a different kind of ferociousness, one that’s slower and more concerned with challenging your intellectual prowess than your sensitivity to bloodshed. The game casts you as a barbarian lord trying to lead your clan to survival in a land where the only thing deadlier than the other barbarians are winters that rip the flesh from men’s bones. Survive those first few years and you might find yourself on the path to becoming a conqueror of Rome – if you’re lucky.
Though At The Gates bears a similar look to Civilization and other 4X strategy games, it has just as much in common with rogue-likes. The units you lord over are not presented as armies or squadrons but instead “clans.” Each clan has a designated portrait and various conditions that affect its stats, giving each a unique strength and weakness. For example, clan Relindis might train faster than anyone else due to being quick-learners, but their impulsive nature makes them likely to steal from your resources from time to time. You need to give each clan a job that they fulfill for your burgeoning empire. You might make one a gatherer to pick berries, another an explorer to chart the map, someone to hunt, some to fight with spears, and so on.
This RPG-lite system is effective because your units become more than little statistics you march across the map, but instead characters whose needs you have to manage. The personality and desires of your people become just as much of a concern as storing food, especially as winter sets in. Every two turns takes up a month out of the year. During the spring, summer, and fall, you need to not only construct important buildings and train your clan, but also stockpile supplies because it’s essentially impossible to forage for anything during the 10 turns dedicated to winter. Worse, if your units are out in the snow with little supplies for them to scavenge, their health will tick down. Earning back health for your clansmen is a chore.
Luckily, loss of units in At The Gates isn’t often fatal. Dead clans are automatically replaced with another to fill in the space, but you lose all of their training and proficiency, meaning that you have to invest the most important resource in them: time. The most compelling feature is also At The Gates’ most frustrating one: every single action of importance takes a huge amount of time. Do you need to train surveyors so you can find some flax in order to craft cloth for the purposes of expanding your clan? That takes four turns. However, you also need to have enough tools on hand to train the surveyor, which means you need to train a blacksmith, so it’s actually going to take eight turns for you to get that cloth. During that time you’ll have to deal with the las two months of winter, not to mention whatever bandits or opposing armies have it out for you in that timespan. While this sounds like a recipe for boredom, more often than not, tension is on the fringe of your map. Watching the valleys and mountains surrounding my growing settlement become covered in more and more snow with each passing turn filled me with a surprising amount of anxiety as I shooed my non-essential clans inside the gates of the settlement to help protect them from the deadly cold. Progress is slow in At The Gates, but every single new bit of knowledge my empire learned, like the secrets of mining or how to turn animals into cloth, felt like accruing small victories over the unfathomable terror of nature.
Unfortunately, as fun as the metagame design of At The Gates can be, the combat doesn’t rise to the same level. Building up an army of military units is often a waste of time until you get to the endgame due to how long it takes to research basic survival features, and even then squaring off against other armies isn’t that fun since battles are presented as two units attacking each other on the map in simple animations. The Civilization series could bear that rudimentary display because they often have weird comical battles featuring things like tanks duking it out with medieval knights. However, given that At The Gates is confined to The Dark Ages, there is no oddball saving grace. Fortunately, there are diplomacy options and a economic victory condition (with a twist) to take over Rome, so you don’t have to go full military machine if the prospect of warring your way across Europe bores you.
The assortment of specialization paths lets you focus on building economies based on certain resources, like iron or crops. The procedurally generated nature of each game (with different resources, map layouts, and starting clan attributes being randomized) also makes the possibilities of each session quite variable once you get past the opening turns of exploring and scavenging for essentials. In one game, your settlement might spawn in the crook of a mountain surrounded by plentiful plant life, minerals, and meat sources nearby. In another, you might find yourself in a desert patrolled by bandits, forced to pack up your settlement in a constant search for a better home. While procedurally generated game states can often be a source of frustration, in At The Gates they often lead to compelling situations that let you craft enthralling stories about your empire, whether they’re tragedies or triumphs. Forming alliances with other factions unlocks the ability to play as those factions in future sessions, adding variants since every faction has its own unique perk (The Avars can train horse archers and gain +1 movement for all their units, for example). The faction-unlocking is a smart mechanic, giving you something to chase and achieve even when the odds for victory in a session are drifting away from you.
At The Gates is at its best once you’re past the steep learning curve and can see the payoff of your careful planning and shrewd tactics in the distance, whether it’s a bounty of food or a significant technological advancement. The slow pacing, difficulty, and confined historical focus might prove a barrier for some, but I loved carving out my own empire of riches in the roughs on grit and determination alone.

Coffee mugs, teacups, or water bottles? I’m not crazy about liquid-holding stuff, but I’d go with water bottles if I had to pick. Bubblegum or cotton candy? As in, those two as flavors? Bubblegum. How did your elementary school teachers describe you? I wouldn’t know but I wouldn’t be surprised if they found me unremarkable. I never recited, got average grades at the first half of grade school, and never really made an effort for the teachers to recognize me. I didn’t start taking stuff seriously till the second half of elementary. Do you prefer to drink soda from cans, bottles or cups? I prefer to pass on the soda. Earbuds or headphones? Earphones.
Movies or TV? Movie, definitely. Favorite smell in the summer? THE BEACH!!!!!!!!! And seafood being grilled at beachside, yummmmm. Game you were best at in P.E./gym? Table tennis. What do you have for breakfast on an average day? On an average day, I skip breakfast. But when my dad is home, he always makes me eat something, and usually that’s fried eggs and hotdogs with white bread. Sometimes he’ll fry rice and pair it with leftovers from last night. Name of your favorite playlist? Right now, it’s a playlist I titled ‘things I wish I said’ and it’s dedicated to Nacho. Lanyard or key ring? My key ring is attached to my lanyard, so that I never forget both my ID and my keys when leaving for school. Favorite non-chocolate candy? Fruitella. Or anything that’s chewy and fruit-flavored (which is still weird to me, considering I hate fruits). Favorite book you had to read for school? Dekada ‘70 and Without Seeing the Dawn. Most comfortable position to sit in? Improperly.
Most frequently worn pair of shoes? I think it’s my pair of Onitsuka Tiger sneakers, but not sure. I don’t keep count. Ideal weather? This question is on like 1 out of 5 surveys, ugh. I like bleak and cold weather. Pencils or pens? Pens. Obsession from childhood? The TV shows Hi-5 and Spongebob. And pogs. Favorite crystal? I don’t think I have any. Favorite activity to do in warm weather? Sulk and complain. Unless I’m at the beach. Favorite activity to do in cold weather? Sleeeeeeeeeeep in, take surveys, and stay in bed wrapped in a blanket. Five songs to describe you? I’m not feeling like anything right now, so I don’t think any of them would be able to describe me. Best way for someone to bond with you? Have samgyupsal with me :) Top 5 favorite Vines? “Come to Del Taco! They have fre...free sh...FREE SHAVACADO” “There’s only one things worse than a rapist – boom” “A child!” “No–” “T-T-T-T-T-T-T-TARGET” “Has anyone ever told you you look like Beyonce?” “...No they usually tell me I look like Shalisa” “Who the fuck is that?” “ME” “Ahhhh, stop, I coulda dropped my croissant” Ads you have stuck in your head? None of them because fuck them all. Average time you fall asleep? 10-11 PM. Sometimes a little later than 11. What is the first meme you remember seeing? Oh man I hopped on that train pretty early. I reached the very first batch of meme comics that came from 9GAG, e.g. the Y U NO guy, the FFFFFFUUUUU– guy, Forever Alone, Bad Luck Brian, the original trollface etc. Suitcase, duffel bag, or backpack? Backpack. I don’t use the other two. Lemonade or tea? Lemonade. Last person you texted? Gabie, I think. I didn’t talk to anybody all day because depression hit bad today, so I can’t remember all that well. Jacket pockets or pants pockets? Jackets, they’re usually more spacious. Favorite type of jacket? Windbreakers or hoodies. Favorite scent for soap? I don’t have a preference, soap should just smell nice for me lmao. Sci-fi, fantasy, or superheroes? Honestly, none of these but if I had to go with one, I’d pick sci-fi. What clothes do you sleep in? Thin and short ones, because I like feeling more cold than warm. Favorite type of cheese? FETA!!!!!!!!!!! What saying or quote do you live by? I don’t like relying on quotes. What are you currently stressed about? Right now, nothing. I’m just feeling down in general. Favorite font? I use Proxima Nova for all my reviewers and school notes, because to me it looks pleasant. It’s actually the default font that my org uses to maintain our branding, and since I’ve worked on a lot of documents for the org, the habit of using Proxima just carried over to my irl files and I ended up liking it. What did you learn from your first job? Proofread every single goddamn thing you write 10, 15 times. From internship. I thought I was decent until my emails were bombarded with copy edits. Favorite fairy tale? None. Favorite tradition? Like, in general? My elementary/high school has a tradition of extending recess break and giving away either free ice cream or slices of our homemade tarts for the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. It’s always one of the most exciting times of the school year. Talent you're proud of having? Reading people. It’s more of a skill than talent, but still. If you were a video game character, what would your catchphrase be? I hate questions like this that force me to be creative, so I’ll pass. If you were an anime character, what genre of anime would it be? No thanks. Character you relate to? Monica Geller. Favorite website from your childhood? Y8, probably. And YouTube. Any scars? [trigger warning: self harm] One on my eyebrow, another on one of my toes, and I still have my scars from when I cut myself a few weeks back. Favorite flower? I like any except anthurium. Any good luck charms? Not really. Least favorite flavor of food or drink? Rootbeer/cola and buko. Left or right handed? Right. Least favorite pattern? I dunno if I have a least favorite one... I don’t really pay attention. Worst subject in school? Like, my least favorite among the ones I’m currently taking? Probably layout class. Favorite weird flavor combo? This isn’t a flavor but I’m willing to have mayo with a bunch of other food. When did you lose your first tooth? I was either in Kinder 2 or in Prep, so I was 5-6. Favorite potato food? French fries. Gas station coffee or grocery store sushi? I’ll take the sushi. The gas stations here look so filthy. Earth tones or jewel tones? Earth tones. Do you call them fireflies or lightning bugs? Fireflies. PC or console gaming? Consoles. I’ve never played on PC before. Writing or drawing? Writing. Podcasts or talk radio? Barbie or Polly Pocket? Fairy tales or mythology? I hate both. Cookies or cupcakes? Your greatest fear? Being humiliated in front of a crowd and losing my loved ones are two big ones. Your greatest wish? To have a lot of money later on in life haha. Who would you put before everyone else? G. Lamps, overhead lights, fairy lights, or sunlight? Overhead. Nicknames? Robyn, Byn, Reben, Rolayn. Favorite season? The season where it rains all day and it generally gets slightly colder. We don’t really have a name for it other than the wet season. Favorite app on your phone? Twitter. What is your desktop background? It’s one of the default Apple backgrounds but I picked the landscape that has a pinkish hue. How many phone numbers do you have memorized? Four. Favorite historical era? I like all of them but in terms of social history, probably the Victorian era and the 1900s-1950s. There are some very interesting anecdotes about the way they used to live in terms of cuisine, sanitation, education, etc.
