Subtext and Culture, Young Royals, Season 3, Episode 3
Episode 3 picks up the day after the camping trip, and Wilhelm calls his mom to check on her. She dumps a massive guilt trip on him, maybe unintentionally, and Wilhelm is feeling a little bit down.
Tumblr media
Culture: These are Swedish studentmössor. They originated in the 1800's among Nordic university students and they wore them as a common marker. Later, they were adopted as graduation caps for high school students, signifying that they were now allowed to begin studying at a university.
Culture: Valborg, April 30th, is a traditional Swedish holiday where you celebrate the coming of spring with bonfires. It is also the start of graduation season for high school students, and graduates are allowed to start wearing their caps.
Cinematography: This season they started writing most on-screen social media commentary in English, despite those users being pretty obviously Swedish. I suspect it's because it saves them having to subtitle all of them, it makes it a bit easier for all the viewers to follow along.
Subtext: No, keeping up appearances is more important than mental health for the royal family, which is why this is new behaviour that Wilhelm has never seen before.
Subtext: As a reminder of the increased interest, here's a paparazzi intruding on school grounds. Also, where the hell is Malin? Isn't it her job to shoo away photographers?
Culture: Vintern Rasat is a classic Swedish song celebrating spring that's often performed by student singers at Valborg.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Boris cleverly offers August individual therapy, something he sorely needs.
Subtext: It's of course a bit ironic that pretty much the entire fandom hates August and has decided that he can't be forgiven or redeemed. Yes, you, dear reader. But Boris lays out a way for August to start his redemption arc. Will it work? Tune in for next week's episode!
Culture: These usernames reek of white supremacy. Norse mythology references are very popular, and 88 means H*il H*tler, so that's the kind of people we're dealing with. The show is also foreshadowing what's gonna happen at the end of the episode.
Blink and you miss it: Linda made Pabellón, a Venezuelan dish. In season 1 we didn't know where Linda was from, but in season 2 she was canonically made as being from Venezuela, just like Omar is in real life.
Subtext: I think August actually cares, Kristina is family to him too, but Wilhelm refuses to treat him as family, so he lies about how she's doing. Not very convincingly, though.
Cinematography: This is an absolutely hilarious shot with a bunch of students anxiously peering out through the windows as the dreaded enemy arrives: Skolinspektionen! Dun-dun-dun!
Tumblr media
Blink and you miss it: There's a rainbow flag on the board to the left.
Subtext: Vanessa totally knew she interrupted a makeout session between our boys. Oh, and there's a lot of purple in these two scenes, colour theory exploded with joy.
Subtext: Simon will be proven wrong, someone will be honest.
Subtext: It's also ironic that Simon joins the rest of the Forest Ridge boys pretending to have a great meal together that is totally not stiff and awkward at all, absolutely not.
Lost in translation: Simon Walter says that May 1st is a "röd dag" - a red day, which is how Sundays and public holidays are usually marked in a Swedish calendar. "Bank holiday" is the term used in the UK for public holidays. There are 13 public holidays in Sweden each year.
Culture: Första Maj is the name of the International Workers' Day in Sweden, because it always occurs on May 1st. In defence of Henry and Walter's shared braincell, most Swedes actually don't participate, but it's a bit weird to not even know what it is.
Tumblr media
Subtext: This entire sequence shows how Felice's dad tried to stick up for himself, but quickly learned to keep his head down instead and conform and roll with it. And it wasn't just the other students who were racists, the staff was in on it too. This goes for all the shit the students are doing, the partying, the booze, the alcohol, the bullying: The staff is in on it. They know. They're complicit.
And despite all of this, Poppe's immediate answer when asked how his time at Hillerska was, is that it was the best time of his life. This is why schools like this stay the way they are, why they never change, because they're very good and very bad at the same time. Trauma-bonding works, the kids will all get friends for life, they'll forget the shit and remember the good times. They'll become like him.
But when Felice learns what the school did to her dad, she decides to help shut it down, to stop the cycle of abuse. The reason she goes in alone is because she now knows she can't trust her dad, he's gonna defend the school, and she also doesn't want him to know that she snitched.
Tumblr media
Subtext: In official surveys, students from schools like this generally rate them very highly. Student satisfaction is very high. Maybe they're lying, maybe they're delusional, but they sure care more about their schools than public school students.
Blink and you miss it: REAL SUBTLE THERE, SHOW.
Subtext: Keeping with the school theme, this is how students defend the shit that goes on. Outsiders are kept in the dark, you don't tell them anything, because they "wouldn't understand", they're missing the "full context", etc. Oh, I don't know shit about fashion, but Fredrika's jacket smells very expensive.
Blink and you miss it: While Wilhelm pinned a polaroid of himself and Simon prominently on his wall, August keeps a similar polaroid of himself and Sara hidden.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Micke's redemption arc is in full swing, so why not play a song that reinforces the idea that people can change?
Subtext: August's redemption arc is in full swing, so let's cut to him nervously waiting outside Micke's place for Sara to come home, while the same song is playing. Is he gonna be a villain forever?
Blink and you miss it: Micke introduces himself as Micke af Eriksson when August introduces himself as August Horn af Årnäs. The English subtitles for some weird reason went with "Micke Eriksson of Bjärstad", but that's actually not what he says.
Subtext: Sara is pretty realistic about her expectations of her dad because she's seen this before, but this also applies to her expectations of August, because she knows that he can also slide back into his normal shitty self. Also, she's wearing a purple sweater.
Tumblr media
Subtext: In case you forgot, August's dad also struggled with addiction, and died from it, so he and Sara actually has that in common. Maybe there's hope for this redemption arc thing?
Cinematography: I don't fucking know why they included this baking scene. It serves no purpose, and I suspect quite a few people in the production have a serious hand fetish, because what is this? What is this? Also, why are Simon and Wilhelm joining what appears to be a Manor House thing with the rest of the girls? How? Why? This makes no sense! It's very cute, though!
Subtext: Oh ok, we got a social media pic that Sara could see and feel bad for her lost friendships. But man, those Hillerska aprons! On point!
Subtext: This is unfortunately a very common thing for people on any kind of psychoactive medication. How can you tell if you need medication if you feel good right now? Is it lasting or temporary? Can you trust your own brain? Either way, fantastic conversation between Micke and Sara, which starts her on her journey to reconcile with Felice at least.
🎵 I can change, I'm not the same, not forever. 🎵
Tumblr media
Culture: The official hat-on-putting ceremony where all the third-year students put on their hats, set to another traditional Swedish spring celebration song: Vårvindar Friska.
Culture: It's Valborg, so Hillerska has their own little bonfire. We saw some students with torches pretending to light it, but it's actually floating in the middle of the fountain so, uh, how did they do that? Normally, your local bonfire or Majbrasa is just a huge heap of wood that you set on fire.
Cinematography: Man, this is a pretty show. Look at that shot. The fire, the sunset, the pool reflection. The end of April is over a month after the spring equinox, so the days are getting longer, and the sun now sets at about half past nine in the evenings.
Subtext: Ok, let's do one more on-the-nose lyrics thing for when August sees Sara back at school. Yes, yes, he needs her.
Tumblr media
Culture: I had to post about it immediately after watching the episode, because setting a sex scene to Uti Vår Hage is hilarious. Everyone in Sweden knows it, most people have sung it at school, it's a cute little song about enjoying your garden, flowers, and giving your loved one a wreath of flowers. I can now never hear this song without thinking about this scene. Thanks a lot, show.
Blink and you miss it: Simon fucks Wilhelm. Yay! Versatile supremacy!
Subtext: Sara is still so suspicious of her dad's behaviour, she can't make herself trust that his current good period will last.
Subtext: Even though this dialogue is about how Simon and Sara are so different, it of course also applies to how Wilhelm and Erik were different, because Wilhelm struggles with not being able to handle his duty the same way Erik could.
Tumblr media
Culture: Alright, it's time for the actual local Första Maj event in Bjärstad. The town is probably a bit small to have a proper demonstration parade, but there's people with banners and socialist slogans, and a bunch of local organisations have joined in, including Bjärstad BK, the football club Rosh plays in.
Culture: Meanwhile, the absolutely not socialist rich kids at Hillerska are nursing their hangovers and enjoying the day off, and they're doing some yoga and playing some padel instead. As you do.
Subtext: Drugs. He looks like he's selling drugs.
Culture: These apparently confused a bunch of viewers, but they're just raffle tickets. It's one hundred numbered, rolled up, paper tickets stuck on a metal ring. When you buy a ticket you just tear it off at the perforation, and when all tickets are sold you can just break the seal on the ring and pour all the stubs in a bag or whatever so you can draw winners.
Blink and you miss it: Cute kiddo has a pride pin on his jacket.
Lost in translation: The show waited a bit with showing what it says on the banner behind them in the photo, but if you can read Swedish you immediately saw that it says KROSSA ÖVERKLASSEN - CRUSH THE UPPER CLASSES. Oh no, Simon, what have you done?
Tumblr media
Blink and you miss it: Like a pack of rabid wolves, the social-media starved Gen Z kids rush to their phones for an hour of glorious feeding on Instagram and TikTok.
Blink and you miss it: I love Vincent so much, he's terrible, but he's just so much fun! The little fist he makes as he says "kampen" just seals it.
Subtext: The show still hasn't revealed the banner text to the non-Swedish audience, but Wilhelm immediately sees it and knows how bad it is and why Farima tried calling him seven times. Also, Vincent is just on a roll here.
Cinematography: Man, this is a pretty show. Look at that shot. Look at how they perfectly aligned the hole in the window with Simon, the police car, and the entrance to their house, as he discovers that someone decided to vandalize it.

À la recherche des crises perdues.
How do you feel, really?
This is not a rhetorical question, I am genuinely interested. If you read this text I’d love it if you left a comment, it would be interesting to hear your thought regarding all the crises that surround us daily and the impact they have on you.
Earlier this morning (Sunday, February 5, 2023) I noticed a headline in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet about (yet another) emerging diplomatic crisis between USA and China. This time in the aftermath of the US shooting down an alleged ”spy balloon” launched by China. Now, I found this interesting as I thought I’d noticed a similar crisis just yesterday, that time in connection to the fact that the balloon was where it, at the time, were.
This got me thinking about if crisis is relative or static, I mean – is a crisis only a crisis in relation to itself, or can a specific crisis be a part of a larger crisis? Or are crisis fundamentally exponential? I mean, looking at how the word ”crisis” is commonly used and the meaning with which it is loaded that seems to be the case: a small crisis, a crisis, a local crisis, a regional crisis, a big crisis, an enormous crisis – the ”holyfuckweareallgonnadie!”-crisis seem to imply a situation where the imminent level of Crisis in any given instance of crisis seem to increase in relation to itself.
I decided to do a quick investigation regarding how ”crisis” have been reported in Swedish newspaper media over the last 60 years. I went to do a search in a Royal Library database that index newspapers as far back as the year 1600 (if you want to check it out, go to Kungliga Biblioteket) and i found the embryo of what could be an interesting trend: the progressive escalation of Crisis. Starting from todays date i did a search covering a period of eight days starting in 1963 and ending with 2022. The only word is used was ”kris” (Swedish for crisis). The results came back as follows:
1963-01-27 – 1963-02-04: 51 hits 1973-01-27 – 1973-02-04: 69 hits 1983-01-27 – 1983-02-04: 122 hits 1993-01-27 – 1993-02-04: 233 hits 2003-01-27 – 2003-02-04: 84 hits 2013-01-27 – 2013-02-04: 314 hits (2020-01-27 – 2020-02-04: 952 hits) 2022-01-27 – 2022-02-04: 463 hits (2022-07-27 – 2022-08-04: 874 hits)
The dates within (parenthesis) were made to 1) the start of the Covid pandemic and 2) to include the Russian war in Ukraine which began after the initial search of 2022, in order to simulate a possible usage of crisis for 2023 that is not yet available to search in the Royal library database.
Removing the outlier (2003) there is a clear trend indicating that the number of crisis have increased over the last 60 years. Even if we remove some of the hits, during 1973 some of the hits were in relation to the artist Kris Kristofferson, and during 1993 some were in relation to Swedish comedians (and I use this word in the loosest possible meaning) Stefan and Krister. Also, in astrology the star sign Sagittarius, for an undisclosed reason, seemed to be in a state of crisis.
When we talk about emotions we often mention empathy. As the word is commonly used it has become a sort of mix between two closely related words – empathy and sympathy. Empathy is the ability, or ”emotion” that allow you to understand the way another person thinks and feels and connect with them whilst still keeping your own emotions separate from the interaction. Basically, empathy is ”understanding what someone feels”. Sympathy, on the other hand, constitutes a form of active participation in the emotions of the other person and tying them, in a sense, to oneself. Or to put it a bit clearer: ”I feel what you feel”.
Personally I’ve noticed that I to quite a large degree have lost the ability to care, especially in relation to crises as reported by media. I connect this in part to the fact that we are living in a state of permanent crisis, a state that keeps intensifying. Why should I care about something that will be over with and replaced by something else tomorrow? The problem with this ”blunting” of emotions is that they are not confined to crisis in the media. I find it increasingly difficult to muster any sense of real emotion in situations that really should trigger an emotional response. Intellectually I can understand and relate to what is happening in, for example Ukraine and Iran, ideologically and morally I can relate to what is right and wrong in a given situation – but I am struggling with the emotional and sympathetic aspects of this. It takes a conscious effort to react accordingly. I don’t feel the suffering of others, which don’t mean that i don’t understand that they are suffering.
During the 60’s and 70’s there were more space in society to share in the suffering of others – often with underlying political purposes. The anti-war movement and the emerging environmental movement originated in a time where the number of simultaneous crises were relatively few, allowing them to grow to a scale large enough to drive political and personal engagement. Today, in the state of constant crisis, this space no longer exist. The sympathy has been replaced with empathy for good and for bad.
On the empathic level I can understand that the anger and fear of  the threat of a looming climate disaster would drive people to super glue themselves to roads or throw baked beans on a work of art, but I lack the sympathetic ability to share this anger and fear. I don’t think that it require any wider experience within the fields of psychology or sociology to reach the conclusion this deficiency in me might in part be related to the current media state of perpetual crisis. And at the same time the opposite is true – that the perpetual crisis lead to a state of increased stress and a loss of wellbeing for a lot of people around the world.
Most people can handle the stress that arise in relation to news events. They see the causes, analyse what is going on and move on with their lives. For others it cause increased levels of stress, stress that if left to itself can slide into worry about the self and the future. This worry might in turn lead to fear which can lead to anger. And anger, as any fan of Star Wars well know, can lead to the Dark Side.
I am not saying that the news alone are to blame for this development, and especially in relation to me. That I am ”the way I am” depends on a whole bunch of things, most of which are related to me (it would be strange otherwise). Another is the rise of new and more efficient ways to share events as they take place around the world. But regardless of this, I would think it very interesting to see if there is a connection between the constant state of crisis in media and a loss of the ability to really care.
I mean, one just get so tired of it all.
p.s I’ve decided to open an account on buymecoffee, in case anyone would like to follow me there. Naturally, this will be my main page, but I will try to post some longer pieces of writing there eventually both to reduce ramblings here and to perhaps get increased interaction with those of you that don’t consider my ramblings to be irritating at best. :) just click here to get to my page. I just created the page, so please bear with me, I’ll get some perks set up as well. I just have to... do... some stuff... first. //Jimmy

warm meals: 2013 pt 1
it started with this + a longer unhinged convo i had with @unabashedlycasualangel. this one is for you, c <3
Nico finds the food after the race on Sunday. It’s sitting on the desk in his driver’s room, an inconspicuous aluminium casserole that doesn’t look store-bought or restaurant made. It looks homemade and it’s unsettling enough to stop him from whatever he was supposed to do. Peel the wet suit off of his body. Celebrate the home victory. Wash off the champagne dripping from his hair into his eyes. Go back to Lewis and congratulate him for adding another 12 points to the team, on top of Nico’s 25.
Nico doesn’t move. He raises an eyebrow at the casserole as if it could speak and give him answers, all the while running through the list of names who would do this. Vivian— doesn’t give him food without asking him first. Lewis— doesn’t cook. Toto, Niki, Bono— they would do it for Lewis, but not for him. Nico shrugs. He doesn’t have time to dwell on it, not when he has a victory to celebrate. When his agent knocks on his door, Nico is down to his underwear. He hands out the casserole, says, “Get rid of it.” Two hours later, he all but forgets about it. Shots pour down his throat as he celebrates on someone’s yacht, singing off-key to Swedish House Mafia, one arm around Lewis’ shoulders, the other curled around Vivian’s waist.
+
The second time it happens, Nico doesn’t spare it a second thought. Someone from the team gets rid of it before Nico gets the chance to get out of his sopping wet suit, but not before his driver’s room smells like a restaurant. Garlic, tomatoes, butter. If this is some kind of reward for winning races, than it’s a poor attempt. Whoever does it, they know Nico loves Italian food. They also know he can’t indulge in it, not when he wants to win a championship one day.
+
“Have you eaten any good food lately?” Sebastian asks Nico out of the blue one day. It’s late in the evening on a Saturday night, and the track still smells like burnt rubber. “I don’t really feel like thinking about food.” Nico’s stomach feels funny. His body feels funny, and he hopes to god he doesn’t come down with indigestion, not after so many unfinished races. Sebastian’s crooked grin only gets sharper. “So you didn’t.” Nico gives him a tired look. “I really don’t know what you’re talking about.” Sebastian shrugs. His eyes look liquid blue in the sunset light, reminiscent of the artificial colour of the shots Nico downed in Monaco weeks ago. He excuses himself before he throws up all over Sebastian’s golden boots.
+
Nico retires with six laps to go and Lewis wins. It’s frustrating but at least he got out of the car before the fire got too bad. He sulks in his driver’s room until Lewis crosses the finish line, and then goes out there to give him a hug, to shower him with congratulations on his very first win for Mercedes. Lewis did the same for Nico a year prior. They celebrate with the team, they listen to one of Niki’s passionate speeches, and then Lewis goes out with his dad, and Nico returns to his hotel room. It’s England, the weather is dreadful and Vivian is in Monaco. There is nothing for him to do. He doesn’t feel like doing anything. He’s still sprawled on the bed when someone knocks on his door. It’s nine, almost ten at night. He only opens the door on the third try and Nico doesn’t have time to be exasperated because Lewis is on the other side. “Hey, man.” Nico steps aside, lets him in. “I thought you were with your dad.” “I was.” Lewis is hesitant. He looks around the room, as if they don’t stay in similar ones— maybe his is better— and then sets something on the table. A plastic white bag that smells like— “I brought you something.” Nico raises an eyebrow. Lewis drops his eyes to the floor. “I, uh— I cooked.” Nico raises the other eyebrow. “You cooked.” “Yes.” Lewis looks up at him, this time defiant. “For you.” “Oh.” “Seb told me you haven’t eaten the food.” “I haven’t talked to Sebastian.” “Still—“ Lewis lifts one shoulder in a half-shrug. “Are you hungry?” Nico thinks about the warm casseroles waiting for him after he has won, an unfortunate reward at best, a mean prank at worst. Turns out, it was neither. “You cooked?” Nico asks again like a broken machine. Before Lewis can get defensive about it, he adds, “Italian?” “Yeah, man. It’s your favourite, right?” Lewis doesn’t cook, but Lewis is also the person who knows him best. That night, they eat together, shoulders to arms to thighs to legs pressed together as they sit on the small bed. That night, Nico eats the best lasagna he has ever had in his life. The championship can wait for him.

Jake wasn't kidding when he said he was moving in. Since he lived on base, he only needed grab his clothes, so Coyote and him had him moved in by that Sunday night.
As you stand by the stove, focusing on making dinner, Jake approaches you. His presence, now, apparently, a permanent fixture in your life. He looks into the pot. "What are you making?"
"Swedish meatballs and then salad," you respond.
Jake's stomach growls audibly, causing both of you to chuckle. "Well, someone's hungry," you tease as you continue preparing the meal.
Jake grins, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "It smells amazing, Y/N. You're quite the chef. Also, Coyote and I did a lot of work this evening."
You chuckled, saying, "Yeah, I only saw clothes." But then your eyes widened, and he immediately noticed the change.
"Don't worry," he reassured you, "I'll sleep on the couch if you want."
As you finish cooking, you plate the Swedish meatballs and salad, then set the dishes on the dining table. Jake helps with setting up the table, and soon, you're both sitting down to enjoy the meal.
"This is all new to me," you say quietly and Jake looks up at you.
Tumblr media
Jake looks at you with a hint of curiosity. "What do you mean, Y/N?"
You take a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "Gavin and I were in a relationship, but we never lived together. Trust me, he tried, but I left." You take another breath. "Leaving him was the best decision I ever made," you add, your voice tinged with relief.
"Well, I can't disagree with that," he says as he places his fork on his empty plate.
You rose from your seat, picked up your plate, and made your way to the kitchen sink
Jake watches you for a moment, then quietly follows. He stands beside you at the sink, offering his silent support. The sound of running water fills the kitchen as you wash your plate. After a brief pause, Jake speaks softly.
"I'm glad you got away from him, Y/N. And I'm here for you, no matter what you need."
You gazed into his sincere, green eyes, captivated by the depth of emotion within them. Setting his plate down on the counter, he extended his right hand, tenderly cupping the side of your face. Gradually, he drew you closer, your eyes fluttering shut as your faces drew near, and then you felt the warmth of his mouth against yours.
The kiss is gentle and reassuring. Warm. Caring. When you finally break away, Jake looks at you with a soft smile. "What's your schedule this week?" He asks as he rinses his plate off and then places yours and his into the dishwasher.
"I'll be lifeguarding in the mornings until Thursday. Evenings, you'll find me at the sanctuary. Friday's a day off, and then Saturday is the Lifeguard competition. Why do you ask?"
"Just asking so I can keep tabs on you."
"Jake, I really don't think Gavin is a threat."
"Y/N, I've never even met the guy, but something about him just sets me on edge."
You peered into his eyes, seeing the genuine concern reflected in his deep green gaze and sigh. "What about you?"
"The unit has some training this week until we leave next Monday."
You nod, understanding the demands of his military service and sigh deeply. "Let's find you some pillows and blankets for the couch."
He grins. "Let's."

Snippet “Sunday”
because technically, even though the calendar says it’s monday, it’s a sunday here, bc that’s we can call these public holiday days sundays too in swedish. or at least we do in my family. so yesterday was a sunday-sunday. in case you were wondering
I was tagged by @imogenleefic and @muldxr to post another snippet, so here it is. it’s another one from my fic for the @1daboficfest!
If Harry had had the energy to laugh, he would’ve, but he felt his body almost shutting off. It was a scary experience, but at the same time he felt safe in a way he never had before. There were so many more things to being soulmates to someone than he had thought. His knowledge about soulmates suddenly felt very lacking.
The schoolbooks about soulmates were clearly not enough, all they had told him was that alphas could pop a knot when they had sex with their soulmate (something that had made him blush furiously when he first read it at eleven years of age), that they were dependent on each other’s scent and pheromones and that they were able to create pups and mate. In other books, it said that only omegas could get pregnant, and sometimes female betas if they were lucky. Even the basic fact that soulmates were dependent on each other’s scents and pheromones hadn’t been mentioned in any book as far as Harry could remember, although that was something he had learned by his mum from a very young age.
Now, it was as if he had stepped into a whole new world where he had to learn everything in order to survive. He realised that it had been a mistake for them to keep the fact that they were soulmates a secret for as long as they had. There were clearly a lot of things they needed to know.
I’m tagging @larrysballetslippers, @neondiamond, @babyhoneyheslt, @enchantedlandcoffee, @red-pandaaa and @wabadabadaba (if you want to) If you’re not tagged but want to do it - say I tagged you!

Lyrics:
OK, you're on your own, it's late
Your girlfriend is on another date with the hero in your dream
Turn around, ask yourself. So, you think you're gonna win this time Manchild?
Is it the pain of the drinking
Or the Sunday sinking feeling
The car never seems to work
When it's late your girlfriend's on a date
And the hero with her in your dream
In your sleep it seemed to like you
Turn around and ask yourself
Turn around ask yourself
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state you're in
Could you go undercover
And sell your brand new lover (could you)
Be someone else for a night
Maybe someone else will love you
You sell your soul for a tacky song
Like the one you hear on the radio
Turn around ask yourself
Turn around and ask yourself
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state you're in
Manchild, he will make you cry
Manchild, Manchild, Manchild
From Monday down to Friday
You're working on another man's car
Or is it in the factory?
It doesn't matter where you are
Just turn around and ask yourself is this communication
Accentuate the positive and give some illustration
See Manchild, you're no one, you turn the microphone on
Control communication when I'm kickin' it and so on
To the point that I need, the air that I breathe
Into an audience that's waiting and ecstatic to receive-
For the meantime another mean rhyme, I keep on sayin' it
I know what the time is the crowd will keep playing it
Through the speaker boxes loud's my diagnosis
'Cause I believe in miracles and words in heavy doses.
Enough R-E-S-P-E and C-T
Respect yourself express no stress the mike is easy
Just believe that all you need is the air that you breathe.
Turn around ask yourself
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state you're in
Manchild, he will make you cry
Manchild, Manchild, Manchild
He's the apple of your eye
Once bitten twice shy, why don't you bite me again
Just take it in the right and go tell your friend
Are you ready for the words I turn the microphone on
A figure of speech to reach you at the back and so on
The style I'm stimulating dance floors
Raise your body temperature now and
This demands for power in the amp you know louds my diagnosis
'Cause I believe in miracles and words in heavy doses.
Songwriter:
Cameron Mcvey / Neneh Cherry / Robert Del Naja
SongFacts:
"Manchild" is a song by Swedish singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry, released as the second single from her debut album, Raw Like Sushi (1989). The single was a top-10 success in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and several European countries. "Manchild" did not chart in the United States or Canada. It was the first song Neneh sat down and wrote. She composed the song on a Casio keyboard (the same one she uses to this day), using an auto-chord setting and ended up with 7 chords in the verse alone. Neneh's stepfather Don Cherry commented on this praisingly, comparing it to a jazz song structure. Nellee Hooper did the beat for the song and wrote the rap with Robert Del Naja. Neneh then gave it to Cameron McVey, who helped to shape the song with the parts and "made it make sense".
The song's lyrics are "directed at a full-grown man who has a little more growing up to do". Neneh expressed the significance of the song for herself, stating it's where she found her sound: "I think "Manchild" was the song where I kind of found my style. I think that song, the style of the song, the spirit and the feeling of the song has reappeared; it always reappears along the way in other songs that I've written; therefore it became the most significant song that I ever wrote, in a way". The music video for "Manchild" was nominated for "Best Video" at the 1990 Brit Awards.

GATHER ROUND FOR I SHALL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THE PLOT-SIGNIFICANT CHRISTIAN ALLUSIONS IN "I SHALL NEVER KNOW THAT SECOND DEATH" BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO COMMENTED TO TELL ME THE STORY LEFT THEM SOBBING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT OBVIOUSLY NEVER WENT TO SUNDAY SCHOOL
Three things to note before going into this:
I Am Not Religious, but grew up with a neat children's Bible with a lot of historical factoids that were intriguing indeed for the girl who wanted to be an archeologist. I'm also inordinately fond of Easter.
Ladybirds are strongly associated with The Virgin Mary. I don't care what behindthename tells you, "Marinette" is in practice a dimminutive of "Marie" and I refuse to believe that the Notre Dame's presence in the OP is incidental
The story's title is from "The Heart of Thomas" which is essentially just a huge Christ allegory
In the first chapter, each meeting Marinette has with a friend showing up at her door includes some more or less blatant Christian reference.
On the third morning, the doorbell rings and Chloé Bourgeois stands on the other side.
= Christ's ressurection was discovered on the third meaning. For people Swedish, Norwegian or Italian who listen to Easter songs and also look up name etymology like I do there might also be something in it being Chloé (="blooming" or "green shot") who gets this one; the Bible talks about spices, not flowers, but this song sure is all about the latter
youtube
(that is the most horrid version I've heard but I think it's the original so)
Myléne and Alix visited with a potted rose for her balcony. She pulls it out of its shaded spot as evening lets up the heat of the day, and she gazes out over the city.
reachy but the rose of one of the many symbols of Mary and this is of course why she discovers The Other Ladybug (Kagami btw)
Somewhere out there, there’s a superhero who might well be able to walk on water, but Marinette can’t perform miracles. For her, keeping her balance on ice is more than enough.
Christ walked on water and so does Marinette at the skating rink, even if she doesn't realise that that's what ice is
Outside her window, the Notre Dame sounds the call to Vespers. When song ends, she stretches her feet towards the ceiling and plays it again.
Nothing special except pay attention to the next chapter
If Paris had still followed the revolutionary calendar, the twenty-third of September would be New Year’s Day.
New Year's Day = feast day of Mary
It’s been fourty-nine days since Hawkmoth was defeated. Ten days ago, Ladybug announced her retirement, leaving the city in Cat Noir’s care until she’s needed again.
The Ascencion of Christ was thirty-nine days after the resurrection (Ladybug retired), marking this scene as happening on Pentecost (the day The Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, initiating the Christian Church).
“Your parents were so nice. I’d never seen my father be happy about visitors. I think I still feel that way - like it’ll be a bother to Aunt Élizabeth if I bring someone home. But that was my father who was the weird one, and I hate when she’s upset for my sake.” “Is she getting easier around you?” Adrien shrugs. “I’m not sure what ‘easy’ is, for her. I think some of it might be because she’s happy that I’m there. She told me she always wanted children, but it never happened. And then suddenly I was there, and even if she’s sad about mum and upset about my father, she’s happy to have me there. ‘The Lord has done this for me’, she said.”
As We All Know, John the Baptist was the son of Mary's aging cousin Elizabeth, miraculously conceived by the blessing of Gabriel (the archangel not the deranged fashion designer) even though his parents were well into middle age. Adrien's Aunt Elizabeth quoted the Scripture verbatim
“Chrysanthemums,” Marinette feels her frown forming. “Even if they’re the only things flowering this late, it’s pretty morbid.” “I don’t know,” says Adrien, and stands on the tip of his toes to straighten the crown of flowers on Ladybug’s head, “you know, they aren’t about death. They’re used in funerals because they’re a symbol of eternal life. Maybe whoever left these flowers meant for them to mean that Ladybug will be back one day.”
Surely The Second Coming is at hand
“That was a goodnight kiss from Ladybug,” he says with a cheeky grin. It wasn’t, of course, but whatever little magic he just bestowed upon her hummed with an energy of the same frequency as the jet black jewel in her hand, with the same frequency as Cat Noir himself. That subsonic current that set her nerves tingling now radiates from her hand, paradoxically easing her mind into the peace she’s been missing for at least seven weeks.
If Ladybug is Jesus maybe and Cat Noir is John the Baptist then Tikki is The Holy Spirit trying to waken Marinette to the faith
The second chapter has a lot less of it but Cat Noir is still the lesser messianic trying his best to the appearance of the true Saviour, and Ladybug's ressurection is interrupted by the bells of the Notre Dame (maybe)
“Please, come find me,” she begs, and the air is filled with motion as the Notre Dame sounds her bells when All Saints Day topples into All Soul’s Day.
The Significance of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (= Day of the Dead) should be self-explanatory, but I'll leave it there to point out the implications of all this Biblical and Catholic nonsense.
Which is: All the nonsense casts Marinette as either Mary (a saint) or Christ himself. Now, sainthood is per definition a status achieved upon death, but Christ came back to life, left this Earthly plane and has been expected to come back any day now ever since.
If Ladybug = Mary, then she's dead, the end, Marinette never remembers
If Ladybug = Jesus, then she'll be back someday and Marinette will eventually regain her memories
and if that's not the most pretentious way to leave a story open-ended then I don't know what is
(thanks for asking I've been wanting to do this for ages)

10 quirks of dating Lucas Raymond
Tumblr media
This man has the strangest, dry, yet hilarious sense of humor. It would be a learning curve adapting your style of joking to his but once you do…no one else can make you laugh the way he does.
Lucas’s love language is definitely quality time. He loves cuddles before games, lazy Sundays, fun date nights out on the town, and any excuse to spend time with you.
It’s difficult sharing your boyfriend with his “boyfriend” Moritz. You manage. Still, the amount of times Mo has walked in on something he was supposed to see, and left gagging, is numerous. Mo also had an affinity to coming along on dates–even if he wasn’t invited.
Lucas often forgets that you aren’t swedish. After hard games he’ll come in mumbling angry swedish words and you have to interrupt.
“Hey babe, I know it was a rough game but neither me or google translate understand what Det här är så frustrerande means.”
He would come and wrap you in his arms.
“Sorry älskade, it means that the game was frustrating and I am sad. I forgot that you don’t understand me.”
Lucas is a really good listener. He's the type to never let you apologize for ranting. He also wants you to depend on him. Or at least feel like you can. Later down the line he's going to be an amazing family man. He puts his family first and wants to be the man of the house in ever situation. He's the glue of his team, the rock to your storm, and even the calm to you or Moritz’s crazy.
He insists on driving you around. It doesn't matter if it's a short trip to the store or a long road trip across Sweden–he's driving. End of story.
Speaking of Sweden, he is so happy to take you home and show you around. He talks about moving back when he retires. And it's hard not to fall in love with the idea. His family is super kind and the summers are beautiful. He also offers Swedish lessons all the time.
He is super sentimental. He kept the ticket from your very first time coming to watch his game. He also has the first card you got him for his birthday, the bookmark from the very first book you loaned him, hell even the lipstick tube of the lipstick you were wearing on your first date. He's a big teddy bear.
Rarely will you ever see Lucas mad or jealous. Only if it's been a really bad day or someone starts trying to glory with you. I feel like he gets even quieter when mad. And grabby when he’s jealous. It’s really endearing all in all. He only ever wants to make you feel safe and loved. That’s his only goal.
Speaking of goals–the two of you have a pregame ritual that happens whenever you can make a game or even when your at home. You are not allowed to touch the ground until he touches ice. So essentially you have to get carried to the car, carried to your seat, and then you have to wait. Once he touches ice you are free to stand. It’s a weird tradition but he swears it’s lucky. The tradition has even passed to some wags including Mo’s girlfriend all the way in Germany.

Yeah like earlier today in a column. Play Björn. Magda is not having her best season. AS IF BJÖRN HASNT PLAYED IN WSL WORSE DEFENSE???
haha lol I actually want Björn to play, along with M. With ilestedt on the bench. They all agree ilestedt is too snow and take too many risks BUt sHe Is TaLL sO sHe MUsT PlAy - no imo. Play magda with Björn, or magda with sempan of she is fit. M is a good LB but she isn’t used to paying it. Play her as a CB with someone who doesn’t give the ball to he opponent every other minute and they should be fine.
I m just sad we will hear every swedish journalist calling M to be benched until sunday now. Think I will do like M herself and just turn off everything
They way they prase it you would swear Magda had a nightmare run or something, not a injury at itself that took weeks to find out for three months and then got COVID. also, the tall defense is so bullshit cause if compared to Magda Magda is better in arieal dules more often than not. i think the move from Magda at LB has to really stop cause yes shes good there but it's better for everyone if she's at LCB. just looking at the difference it made just moving her more centrally did.
i 100% wouldn't blame magda for unfollowing them all cause OMG there takes are actually english media level bad and cringy

1765
Thank you so much for asking!
It was an interesting time. Not necessarily this year in particular but a few following decades for sure. Not a good time but interesting. Like in this Chinese curse.
However, 1765 was not just your ordinary year in this dying country either. Just a year before the Polish and Lithuanian aristocracy (and Ukrainian I guess, even though the country at the time was called the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the territory of now Ukraine was included and aristocrats living there also had the right to vote) elected the new king (yeah, since 1573 this country had elective kings, it was a bit of a mess tbh). His name was Stanisław August Poniatowski and for once he was not a foreigner (it's like 5 foreign/6 local or 7/4 ratio depending on how to count Władysław IV Waza (Vasaätten in Swedish) and his brother Jan Kazimierz who were from foreign dynasty but from what I know were actually raised in Warsaw. Add one to local if we count Anna Jagielonka but she wasn't actually ruling I think)(Jeez, I get sidetracked a lot, am I not?). Anyway, long live the king! At least this one tried to do something about all of the shit that was going on! He failed miserably, yeah, but at least he tried. It's much more than can be said about at least a few of his predecessors.
Back to the 1765 because I'm spoiling, back then it was believed there were some chances of healing. New King just opened a new school in Warsaw but it was not your ordinary Sunday school. Szkoła Rycerska (Knightly School I guess) was a special school for aristocratic youth in the spirit of Enlightenment and raised a bunch of much-needed wise patriots instead of drunk short-sighted idiots who were governing back then. Kinda late for the party with Enlightenment, I know but anyway, it was really needed back then. Unfortunately, they were still deep in this whole "aristocracy is a pupil of an eye of the country" mindset (though this aristocracy was a bit different than what it means in the West, we have separate word for it but aristoracy is best translation I could get, because you could be dirt poor and aristocrat, just born into the right family and supposedly they were all equal. supposedly. They made up about 10% of the population though. There were three or four "classes" of them, based on the amount of money they had, I can talk about it more if someone is interested), so only blue-blooded deserved to go there. But, you know it was a step in the right direction and between the fact that the king had very little influence on anything, lots of conservatives in parliament, fucking liberum veto (this shit deserves its own, separate rant, the stupidest idea in the history of Polish law and I have a vague memory of chimney tax being a thing), and the way foreign powers were messing up, it probably was almost as good as he could get. As the name suggests, its main focus was the military and civil servant type of service. Each year supposedly 200 boys from poorer (still aristocratic though) families got stipends from the state budget to attend it. During almost 30 years of working, it was finished by 950 people. IDK what happened with these 200 stipends/year. Probably didn't work because this country was quite literally dying, burning, okay, maybe I'm overexaggerating but t'was bad.
Anyway, like any school, Szkoła Rycerska had its share of famous graduates. The most famous one definitely is Tadeusz Kościuszko. Idk if Americans tried to translate his name in any way, so here you go, certified Polish spelling (he himself translated his first name as Thaddeus). Anyway, yeah, he is The Guy who fortified Philadelphia and a bunch of other places like Saratoga, West Point, etc. during the American Revolution (I'm not all that knowledgeable when it comes to his success in this war tbh). He also used money he got from Congress as a payment/thank-you gift to free as many black slaves as he could, while having enough to give each of them a decent start in free life (education and stuff like that). His last will too was like that but it was never executed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Unfortunately, he wasn't as successful in Poland.
Btw, the highest mountain in Australia is named after him. No, to my knowledge he had never been in Australia.
Other graduates of Szkoła Rycerska also did some amazing things but their more of the local heroes, so tell me if you're interested in me telling you more about them.
Yo, I just made quite a long post about the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth near the end of the 18th century and hadn't outright mentioned that it disappeared as a country in 1795. Not in a "got separated into two countries like Czechoslovakia in 1990's" but in a "not a sign on a map it ever existed"
That's an achievement.
I can and will elaborate on anything that spiked your interest, I hope it's coherent enough to be readable
I was well into answering this when my god damn ancient laptop decided to freeze and delete it all, I swear just getting angry with this thing is shortening my life more than stress of finishing high school ever could

During the closing stages of Friday night’s cup clash, the home support began to sing ‘Europa League - you’re having a laugh’ which whilst being generally quite irritating, may have also been a bit too close to the bone for many of the travelling Aberdeen fans. Whilst for me, Aberdeen did well to navigate what had always looked to be a tricky tie away from home, albeit against a lower league side, there were parts of the performance which do make the upcoming European fixture a tad concerning. At both Livingston and Stirling, we have failed to create and excite and whilst being (mostly) defensively sound, there have been some signs we may still be suffering from the road sickness that has plagued the last several seasons. With two huge away games this week, in Europe and the league respectively, there is some concern that this could cause us to stumble just as we look to get the season properly up and running.
Firstly, the game away to Hacken looks like a preferable tie compared to some of the sides that we could have faced at this stage of Europa league qualification and means a romantic return to Gothenburg for Dons fans. Courtesy of my friends at the ABZ Podcast, their lo-fi counterparts at Red Tinted Glasses and their respective guests on this week’s instalments, I’ve learned that it looks like the Swedish side will be hoping we go there to try and play expansive, free flowing football, with the home team very much fancying their chances in a fast-paced shootout. The supporters of the Gothenburg team seem almost content knowing that their side are likely to concede, such is their confidence in their sides ability to score goals. Barry Robson has talked extensively about results being his main area of concern for his Aberdeen team and I think the majority of Aberdeen fans expect that he will take a pragmatic approach to the tie, particularly the away leg and that tomorrow night we will see a side set up to frustrate and try to grab a goal if the opportunity presents itself. It might not make for the most exhilarating night of RedTV, it might not be what I was dreaming of when urinating in a lay-by on the way back from Stirling last Friday but if this approach can get the tie back to Pittodrie on level terms, with a lead or even a small deficit, it sets up what promises to be a brilliant occasion on home turf next week and it might just be our best chance of reaching the coveted Europa league group stages.
Paisley hasn’t been the happiest hunting ground for Aberdeen, in recent years, or ever as the records show but with the way the fixtures have lined up for this opening period of the season a result here could be invaluable in ensuring we don’t start to drift in the league. St. Mirren have themselves had a great start to the campaign and after their record at home last season, will fancy their chances on Sunday afternoon, as they will against most, if not all, opponents in the league. This will be another opportunity to try and override some of our struggles away from home and a first chance to prove that a European hangover won’t distill our league efforts. Hearts and particularly Hibs, have already shown so far this season that the additional midweek games can stretch a squad, which makes this week’s timely additions even more welcome.
What to say on Jamie McGrath! For someone it feels like we should know plenty about, the jury still seems to be very much out on how to view our newest midfield acquisition. Well regarded during his time at St. Mirren, completely overlooked at Wigan and relegated with Dundee United, albeit seen as relatively well performing within a struggling side, it feels like we could be getting a player with good experience in the Scottish game who offers another good attacking option from midfield or someone slightly out in the wilderness, who has eventually made his way to Aberdeen after much speculation of our interest in him over the past few years. Either way, this looks like one that will need to be proven on the pitch but with our fixtures mounting up and given that Jamie has signed on a permanent contract, this to me looks like a sturdy, if not scintillating, addition to the squad.
I won’t pretend to have an extensive knowledge of Dutch or Polish football, or of Richard Jensen as a player, but considering that we have been crying out for left sided defenders in more windows than this one, I’m delighted to see this deal get done. At 27 and with around 150 senior appearances, he looks to be the kind of experienced of defender we will need this season. It will also come as a relief to some I’m sure, that this deal finally puts to bed the rumours of Liam Scales return, with this now looking highly unlikely. Whilst I rated Scales during his time at Aberdeen last season and will always feel indebted to him for that goal he totally meant, it didn’t sit well with most Aberdeen fans that we’d either be taking him on loan again or being held to ransom by Celtic for a permanent move and with their mounting defensive injuries, it seems for the best that this move can finally be dismissed.
In a week where it feels much has happened with lots yet to come, I’ll wrap up by saying to those in Gothenburg, Aberdeen or wherever else, have faith tomorrow night, that as Jack Mackenzie’s eleventh lumped clearance soars through the air or across your screens it could be just what’s needed to set us up for something very special in one week’s time. Safe travels, happy streaming, stand free!

Release: November 3, 1979
Lyrics:
Sunday and it's so hard to say goodbye
I don't know what to do passing the days without you
Friday night when I see you again
You'll make a fool out of me
I don't wanna be your lover for the weekend
Sometimes when I'm looking at your face
There's something in your eyes that makes me realize
We've got no chance if we're going on this way
You mean such a lot to me
I don't wanna be your lover for the weekend
Love in a woman's heart
I wanna have the pope a night apart (Het moet zijn: I wanna have the whole and not a part)
It's strange that this feeling grows more and more
'Cause I've never loved someone like you before
Sunday and it's so hard to say goodbye
I don't know what to do passing the days without you
Friday night when I see you again
You'll make a fool out of me
I don't wanna be your lover for the weekend
Sometimes when I'm looking at your face
There's something in your eyes that makes me realize
We've got no chance if we're going on this way
You mean such a lot to me
I don't wanna be your lover for the weekend
Songwriter:
Sometimes when I'm looking at your face
There's something in your eyes that makes me realize
We've got no chance if we're going on this way
You mean such a lot to me
I don't wanna be your lover for the weekend
Dirk Mike Dierickx / Gerard Koerts
SongFacts:
'Weekend' is a song by Earth & Fire that was released as a single from the 1979 album 'Reality Fills Fantasy'. It was the group's second number one hit in their home country of the Netherlands, as well as the first and only number one for them in Germany and Switzerland.
The song was written by keyboardist Gerard Koerts and produced by the group together with Gerrit Jan Leenders. The pop song has some elements of disco and reggae. The lyrics are about a weekend relationship. However, the protagonist realizes that things can't go on like this and that she doesn't want to just be a lover for the weekend.
The single was released by Vertigo in November 1979. The B-side of most editions contained the track 'Answer Me', only the Swedish edition contained 'Fire of Love'.
