I KNOW I SHOULD BE ANSWERING ASKS INSTEAD OF COMING UP WITH NEW AUs BUT Isamira AU. Isabela marries Mariano, is unhappy about it for obvious reasons but manages to put on a smile. However, strange things start ocurring in town - animals getting sick, namely. First animals and then people who consume animal products, such as milk, eggs, cheese, meat... even being in contact with newly-sheared wool can make you sick. Only animals have died so far, but it's concerning, especially when crops begin to die and trees dry up, and when the river raises, vegetation can't hold it back, and the water floods the nearby houses and farms.

Mirabel can tell something is wrong right away, but no one listens to her when she expresses her concerns, and she's told to stop wasting everyone's time when she tries to investigate. However, since she's useless little Mirabel who always has far too much free time and practically no obligations, when Isabela inevitably falls sick, she's the one trusted to look after her.

Isabela's marriage has drained away all the life and grace she had left. She's been trying to conceive a baby with Mariano, but to no avail. She feels uncomfortable with her husband. She hates feeling his hands on her. She sometimes struggles to sleep. Right now, Mirabel's constant presence is driving her insane. She can't stand her concerned gaze, or her soft hands when she pulls a blanket up to cover her, or her humming when she thinks Isabela is asleep, and she's distracting herself by embroidering something with her little embroidery frame. She hates it. She fears it. It's making her illness worse. Her anxiety and distress seep into the earth and poison the roots of every plant. They produce toxic substances that harm them and anyone who consumes them. Trees die and grass loses its color. Crops grow weak. She's sicker than everyone else, both in body and mind. Normal people don't loathe and fear their spouses. Normal people don't lose their breath when they see their little sisters. Normal people don't feel vines and throwns and poisonous flowers curling inside their lungs or creeping up their throats.

Mirabel tries her hardest to balance her duty to take care of her sick sister, and her need to investigate a truth everyone else denies - she's helping her bathe when she's too weak one moment, and the next, she's walking the woods with a botanic book in hand, counting all the poisonous species she recognizes. She creates a murder board of suspicious subjects in her room while Isabela sleeps in her small bed, because she was too scared to go back to the same place she shared every night with her husband. But she eventually discovers that, in order to uncover the truth, she never had to leave her sister's side at all.
