And another thing! Literally any queer story that takes place during the colonial age would have a huge gaping hole in it if it didn't have anticolonialism as a theme. Especially one that centers indigenous people. Like the reason that every culture had their own concepts of gender until something happened and then suddenly the gender binary was ubiquitous is because western European colonial powers made their view of gender the only acceptable one as part of christianizing and colonizing the world. You're not gonna have a show set in 1717 in the Caribbean where the love interest is a gay Maori man and the main deuteragonist is a non-binary mestizo catholic and just skip over colonialism. Like these are exactly the people who western gender roles are being forced on at fucking gun point during this era. Jim and Ed are both mixed race characters who's gender and sexual identities are in active defiance of the colonial powers that be. And this is the fucking Stede Ed and Jim show.
And there's something to be said for the fact that Stede's toxic masculinity plot line is internalized and Ed's struggle with toxic masculinity is largely external in the form a white guy who rubs elbows with the British Navy when Ed doesn't behave to his standard of masculinity. That choice didn't come out of nowhere and it shows a deep understanding of where homophobia comes from. That's not to say that precolonial communities of color were paradise for people that we today would consider queer but the rich tapestry of sexual and gender expressions that existed in those communities were erased in the name of colonialism. That's going to affect literally any queer person at the time when OFMD is set. These two things are inextricably linked.
Like when David Jenkins says a lot of what we're taught about being men is wrong, motherfucker who taught us what a man was. Who taught Ed what a man was? Who taught Stede what a man was for that matter? It's the white dad with the English accent who is violent (derogatory) and overbearing.
Like you get what I'm saying right? Like it's a silly little rom com but also it must necessarily be that deep because of who these characters are and when and where they exist.

i understand why the danny phantom fandom had a hard time deciding on whether or not jack and maddie are bad parents, because there’s a lot of moments in the show where they’re genuinely well-intentioned and even good parents, and other times where they’re blatantly awful and borderline abusive
but i feel like nobody considers that danny phantom is a show that prioritizes exaggerated comedy and status quo before realistic characterization and character development. don’t get me wrong, the fandom is very much aware that danny phantom didn’t have the best writing and could’ve improved in a lot of places. it’s kinda like, we just gotta take that into consideration too when deciding on how good or bad jack and maddie’s parenting is
the fact that they strapped him to a machine that violently spun him around to “spin the crazy out of him” in that one episode should immediately make them abusive parents. but there’s this gray area where you’re not sure if you should include that or not when making a judgment because it was obviously written as just a joke, but it’s still canon at the same time? and it gets even more confusing because there’s other moments in the show where they care about their son and his safety, but they also did…that. and many other things too
this is a bigger issue with danny phantom’s writing in that it isn’t sure what kind of show it wants to be. it’s ok for a superhero show to have comedic moments, but it’s weird to make it convoluted in a way that the viewer isn’t sure what the tone is. just some thoughts i have

yj is fascinating to me. i watch the silly finale. i giggle. i think huh that's interesting. i go yepyep they're still not interrogating race and disability and consequently having some racist and ableist implications in their narrative. i whoop and cheer when coach ben says fuck them kids and tries to burn down their little cannibalism cottage, not because i think they deserve to die but i think it's deeply funny that ben Did That. what a guy. coach 'i can excuse burning like 12 children to death but i draw the line at survival cannibalism' ben. yes thats his legal name <3 anyway misty girls stay winning

i have so much work to do for finals season which is frustrating bc on the one hand i'm very glad all my classes have project-based finals where i get to be creative instead of just doing an exam or a paper. however. i have a bad habit with every project-based final ever of accidentally getting an idea that's way too ambitious and creating more work for myself than i need to do
however this semester even tho i fell into that exact same trap my two most elaborate final projects each involve 1. editing a video essay which contains an interview i did with paul bellini and at least 45 seconds of it are bellini talking about why he thinks i have great potential as a comedian, and 2. editing a ten minute reel of the documentary footage i got on tour with scott. which of course involves rewatching various videos of me and scott being extremely chaotic together. so i stay winning ig

Not to get into the Discourse™️ but it continues to baffle me that we get these ‘you can’t like a character unless they’re perfectly pure and good’ people in a fandom for a show about fucking pirates.
And it’s not like they’re all nice, innocent pirates - far from it! Especially not the central characters! Stede, Izzy and Ed have all canonically maimed and/or killed people without showing remorse for it. Stede, Izzy and Ed have all been dicks at some point or another. Like sure, Izzy definitely tends to be a bit of an unpleasant shithead more often, but people always set him apart as so drastically more evil than Stede and Ed when that’s just?? Not really true??? I’m just saying, the gap on the asshole scale is not NEARLY as dramatic as some of you people think it is.
And guess what!! It’s not just a show about any pirates either!!! It’s a show about fucking Blackbeard! It’s a stupid, amazing, beautiful show about Blackbeard, the most fearsome pirate to ever sail the seas, falling in gay love with Stede Bonnet, the world’s most privileged but lovable bitch! (I 100% use the world bitch with affection here). And yet somehow you still have these people who are like ‘ummm actually people who like Blackbeard’s first mate are problematic bc he was a bit of a meanie sometimes :/’ -WOW GEE GOLLY I WONDER IF THAT MIGHT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT HE’S A FUCKING P I R A T E

Okay I finally watched Groan Ups and I absolutely loved it because Mischief never misses. But I desperately want the script to be released so I can read it. But I also desperately want to be able to put this show on. I think it would be so good for my college’s theatre program
