Our song Prisoners was released a year ago today! It remains one of my favorite Dead Rituals singles.
It is a straightforward indie rock track, but my goal was to add some interesting textures and layers add some depth to the mix.
The song is about pressure from toxic people, and struggling to find a sense of belonging. It’s an open question that relates to one’s chosen path in life, looking back on every little thing that brought you here. What would happen if you could do it all over again?
The original concept for the song was to have it be an electronic-leaning track, much like the song Dark turned out later on.
However, I quickly realized “Prisoners” begged for a more energetic approach, so I made it a bit heavier with drums and guitars. My collaborator Paolo Cotrone developed some additional guitar parts and the heavier outro riff, which helped the song come together. My wife Brita also sang on the track’s choruses; I enjoy how her vocals contrast with the dense, raw guitar parts! Paolo and I also created an acoustic version, which gave the track a different flavor. The song also appears on our 2022 live EP, as we recorded a full band take during the sessions. Just a few seconds into the first pass at the song, the nut of my guitar, which I had cut improperly, exploded in scattered pieces everywhere! Thankfully, I had a backup guitar!
Find this song and more of our music on Spotify, Youtube, or Bandcamp.

Reasons why Bring on the Monsters from The Lightning Theif musical is an amazing song:
1.) "There's gonna be a fight. There still might be a war. For a moment, we've got danger on the run." Talk about setting the tone. We're in the clear as of today, but something is coming. Something bad.
2.) "Feeling ready🌊" "Feeling stoked🦉" "Feeling quesy🐐". Love how they gave Annabeth the 'feeling stoked' line. Because, of course, she's waiting in the wings, ready to kick ass when need. But it's also hilarious that the actress playing Annabeth is Kristen Stokes. So, I just imagine the writers gave her that line to mess with her.
3.) "Bring on the monsters. Bring on the real world." Like, yeah. They physically spent the majority of this musical in the real world, but they were disconnected from it. The three of them singing this line is a declaration of unity between their human and godly side. They are neither here nor there, not bound to one world, but exist in both.
4.) "They'll be times when your faith is shaken." Yes, your faith in the gods will be on the brink of breaking at any given moment. But so will the faith in yourself. But sometimes, being a demigod means doing it scared. But you won't go it alone.
5.) "Gotta know where the real fight lies when it's time to rise and stand your ground." Annabeth and Clarisse singing about knowing which battles are worth fighting and when is utterly amazing. Because not only are they both children of war gods, but they also canonically struggled with being strong-willed and prideful. It's like even though were at odds at the beginning of the musical, they aren't as different as they first appear.
6.) "No, I'm never gonna once have it easy. I'll make mistakes, but my own, and it frees me." In TLT, Book!Sally says something along the lines of: 'If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.' This is as applicable to a demigod as it is to a mortal. And it's bittersweet because not every demigod gets the chance to choose. Or rather, they don't choose wisely because they're so spiteful when it comes time. But sometimes, you gotta let the anger fade and move forward.
7.) "I'll be back next summer. You'll see me again. I'll be back next summer. I'll survive 'till then." There's something about this line that makes me want to cry. Percy started this musical saying he didn't want to be a half-blood, essentially rejecting the idea of a demigod, but ends the musical declaring his eventual return. He isn't saying goodbye, but a see you later. Which just tugs at my heart strings knowing we'll never get a second musical, but it's okay because Percy's essence extends beyond the Broadway medium. Whether it be a book, musical, movie, or graphic novel, Percy will always be back.
8.) Also, if you listen to the instrumental of this song, the guitar riff at the very end is playing the same melody of 'I didn't wanna to be a half-blood' underneath Percy's declaration of unwavering loyalty to demigods. And it broke me like a bone.
You guys remember these? That's great because I didn't. It just occurred to me that I never finished my analysis of the TLT musical, and I thought I'd get on that. Anyway, this song is fucking incredible, and I want a SOM musical. But I digress.
something about jack harkness's growth, from being absolutely prepared to die to becoming unexpectedly immortal, to outliving everyone he knew, to playing with life and death like little dolls, to finally coming to respect death when it took the man he loved
just jack, understanding so completely that his immortality might keep him alive indefinitely, but also that it is a curse that he wouldn't wish upon anyone no matter how lonely he gets, only wanting more time to say goodbye to ianto and still not getting enough at the house of the dead. jack coming to accept ianto's death and letting himself grieve and move on, and fighting on behalf of ianto's right to stay dead and not be dragged back when torchwood really wanted to
Theon: I'm on a voyage of really finding myself again
Asha: Stannis is just really out here enforcing gender roles in a fucking crisis... anyway back to that asshole who flips his hair and left me walking in a fucking blizzard on a broken ankle
Victarion: WHAT DO YOU MEAN GRINDR ISN'T AN APP FOR SHARPENING MY WEAPONS *smashes phone*
Euron: *showing off his entire collection of villain costumes* It's all about dressing for the job you want not the one you have.
Aeron *tied to a bow of the Silence*: EEEEEERRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH
I just discovered this video of Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and Isaac Hempstead Wright singing along to the opening to Game of Thrones. This single-handedly brought me more enjoyment than the entire series ever did.
I find it interesting how a decent amount of ppl compare Songbird and V to Johnny and Alt's relationship b/c of them being netrunners and V and Johnny both defying big authoritative figures to save someone they love. Or care for(usually when I say the word love I mean care for) anyways. Which I agree but I started to think of Rogue and Johnny's relationship.
Johnny was straight up cruel to Rogue maybe their relationship wasn't the best or they had other "terms" during their relationship but for the most part, Johnny was not a "good lover". He cheated on Rogue I think Alt as well? And yeah he was mostly selfish throughout their relationship. Even though in the game Alt says "Johnny can alter his memories" it's funny how V is still shown how much a bastard Johnny is. Not like he ever tried to hide it really.
But, so Johnny showed Rogue time and time again that he was a "bad person" or specifically a "bad lover" but everytime Johnny had some bullshit cooked up he always went to Rogue for help. Even when Rogue protested against the things they did, she still decided to help him through and through. Also during the raid on arasaka(ending) with Rogue, Johnny can leave Wayland(to basically die) Rogue gets upset at Johnny but (in a way still sounds like how she did in the past) rages at him but still fights with/for him. Later on Johnny will blame Smasher for Wayland's death (but if he had helped Wayland, he wouldn't have died)
Basically, Rogue put up so much bullshit to help Johnny no matter what it was. Interesting way to be loved/show ur love. Rogue was emotionally manipulated but still always put her life on the line to help Johnny. And he was probably the last person she should've helped but she did it anyways out of love or eddies?(mostly love). But with V and Song, Song lies to V(Song is betraying V's trust) and at the same time, V can do the same thing to Songbird BUT they both still had the choice to protect one another. Whether it was V still sending Songbird to the moon or Songbird still deciding to protect V from dying by some Raging AI. Johnny just takes and takes and even 50years later he's "changed" but can still be a fucking bastard in the end and Rogue pays the price. Diving in head first to save someone she loves. And possibly redeem herself as well.
And Johnny rushing into arasaka Tower to "save" Alt, I honestly felt like he did it for Alt but genuinely it was more for his ego? Rogue calls him out on it? And I think I agree. He could never let shit go, and in a way it felt like Alt's death was used as an excuse to blow shit up(taking shit to the extreme or to prove to himself that he was worth arasaka's time💀). I have no doubt in my mind he loved Alt but did he love her the "right" way, never. It made me think what if Johnny wasn't such an asshole and he decided to pay attention to his gf could she have actually ASKED for his help.
He claimed Songbird only got to the moon cause of "luck" but really she had support SOMEONE THAT LOVED HER AND BELIEVED IN HER. Helping, If only he could've been there for Alt maybe both of them could've had a "happier" ending. Songbird had V with her to the very end. Whereas Alt was alone and Johnny was too.
