I first noticed this five-year pattern in like 2014, but:

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991): good.

Sonic 3D Blast (1996): bad.

Sonic Adventure 2 (2001): good.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006): bad.

Sonic Generations: (2011): good.

Sonic Forces (made for the 25th anniversary, but released in 2017 instead of 2016): bad.

Sonic Frontiers (as close to 2021 as it was gonna get): good.

Prediction: regardless of whatever other games get released in the interim and in between, Sega will release a mainline Sonic game somewhere between 2026-2027 which will be bad, and then in 2031-2032 there'll be another good one.
