gotta love the pathetic wet cat bond rodya and sonya share tbh imagine having a bestie that just shows up at your house, makes you read the bible, confesses they committed a murder, rants about napoleon and says "oh sonya we're really in it now😔"

so I’ve been rereading c&p (I’ve been stressed out lately and decided that would fix me) and am once again in awe of dostoevsky’s characterization. like obviously there’s raskolnikov and all his eccentricities that make him relatable in spite of himself. and razumikhin with his indomitable optimism and cute little colloquialisms (we do want money like a bear wants molasses you’re so right my friend). and nastasya who pokes fun at raskolnikov but still brings him meals even when the landlady tells her not to. the landlady doesn’t even appear other than peeking through the door and dostoevsky still gives her her due. and dunya who’s a paradoxical mix of coolness and tenderness (she is a raskolnikov after all). and don’t get me started on sonya who fills a trope in the story but is then made to feel the weight of it. and pulcheria and lizaveta and even I would argue alyona ivanovna plus many others I’m not mentioning. like who would want to be an extraordinary man when the ordinary ones are so much richer

dostoyevsky was surely a master of nomenclature as well. i don't know if all editions include this, but my copy of crime and punishment (penguin) includes info on the names of the characters and their meanings. dosto's versatility is unbounded since even the names of characters match with their actions and character traits.
from raskolnikov's name, "raskolot" means to chop or split. "raskolnik" refers to religious schismatic. "razum" in razumikhin means intellect or reason. "zametit" from zametov's name means to observe. most importantly, sofya who is mentioned often as sonya, refers to wisdom.

You ship them because you want them to fuck and kiss on the lips and be happy. I ship them because l want them to go through tough times together, l want them to kiss each other's cheek and hands and knees, l want them to have bad times but eventually go back to each other because they know each other like themselves.

Another drawing of them <3 I think I posted the unpainted sketch in my secondary blog. I really wanted to try a chiaroscuro effect with the colour pencils, but I always have difficulty painting with the dark browns, so Rodya's hair and coat and the wall don't look that good.
I added some effects on the first one, this is the original
