Often in life, there is so much beauty in the #broken ... . . The Japanese have an ancient art form known as #kintsugi, where they repair broken pottery using a lacquer made up of gold, silver and other precious metals. These master craftsmen work in immaculate detail, striving not to recreate the original, but rather to establish a new aesthetic. Their philosophy aims to make the object even more beautiful than it was before it was broken ... . . In a way, each and every one of us is a little bit broken, too. We would like to believe we are perfect, but in reality, us humans are a unique mish-mash of the good, the bad and the ugly. But as we live and age and gather wisdom, we get the opportunity to apply our own brand of kintsugi ... We can fine tune our character, improve on our lifestyle, shape our relationships, and whittle away at our flaws. It's an on-going process to get those pieces to fit in the right places, but often the doing is in the trying. . . There are many parallels to be found in the many broken places on planet, too. I got to spend some time in #Bushmanskloof near #mcgregor yesterday as part of one of our @ozone.africa projects, and it was heartbreaking to see how this #naturereserve had been devastated by the New Year fires. And yet, from amongst the charred and blackened earth, #nature was already applying its restorative kintsugi, with purple disas, crimson pelargoniums and jade restios blades beginning to weave a brand new tapestry. . . We got to run free within the shattered rock and scattered detritus of these rugged wilderness ranges, and despite the damage, the natural beauty was truly celestial. This will always be my cathedral, this 'Church of the Great Outdoors', and I wish we had more time to spend watching this special place go about mending itself. These last two days have been all about #redfins here in the gorgeous @gvbconservancy. Our mission has focused on monitoring #riverhealth in the off-grid canyons characterising this part of the #Hessequa, and what an adventure to hang out with the @capenature field crew 💦🏞️💙 . . Rock-hopping, ridge scrambles, eel wrangling, deep-forest hikes ... all while trawling the tannin-stained pools of the #Tradouw, #Kruis and other incredible mountain streams in the peaks above #Heidelberg, way off the beaten track, and as far as you could possibly get from the #ratrace. . . Roman Rock Lighthouse is an iconic #falsebay beacon for regular paddlers on this breathtaking stretch of ocean. It is also the only lighthouse in SA built on a single rock, where a wild surge runs amok along this deep ocean reef. The powerful light has been guiding ships to #simonstown harbour since 1861 ⚓ 🚢 . . Now that my front teeth are back in place and I've banked my first recovery #surf, it's time to focus on all those kickass #2020 missions stacking up as we unpack this brand-new and exciting year ... First up is a #canyoneering mission with @tablemountainfund within the remote kloofs of the @gvbconservancy, where we will go in search of rare aquatic species. Always exciting to spend time with @aileenoutside and the good folks of the #grootvadersbosch Conservancy 🌿🌳🐾 Next up is one of my fave boutique #mtb experiences as the #oZone crew saddles up to cover the @transcapemtb Stage Tour. This #mountainbike 'Journey across the Cape' traverses the Garden Route, Karoo, Overberg and Winelands, ending in fabulous Franschhoek after seven glorious days of wild cranking. Very excited about my @ozone.africa colab with @zaneschmahl, and the start of a lekker @the.africanadventurer #media project, too. Not too mention our @beyondexped journey, #BeyondBicornis, for #rhinoconservation. More about all of this soon 👌😊 All in all, blessed to have the calendar for the rest of the year pretty chockablock, too, but as always, the key will be to keep the balance right when it comes to work, family and play. So far, so good, with #outdoor mountain and ocean missions galore. We've scrambled through #Boomslang Caves, caught freezing #Scarborough waves, trekked and ran the #DeepSouth Trails, gone vertical @cityrock_cpt and even saddled up the @giantlivrsa bikes for a couple of rides. Always great to be part of a kickass #naturalhigh on #TableMountain, especially if it happens before most of #CapeTown wakes up! The faces and smiles says it all a the finish line of the @ecobound_adventures #tohellandback #mtb Challenge. This, despite the fact that competitors had to cope with approximately 30 Degrees of temperature variation as they cranked SA's longest gravel pass into #DieHel (and back again) ☀ ❄ On the gruelling ride into Gamkaskloof, temperatures simmered around the mid-thirties, and on the return ride it was 5 Degrees Celsius at Die Top, the zenith of this 2-day, 2-way #mountainbike Stage Race. The predicted massive downpour for the #swartberg mountains never materialized , but hopefully the wet weather on the Oudtshoorn side may still move across ... let's hold thumbs. From tempestuous Indian Ocean traverses along steepening cliffs, to windswept and contorted coastal forests: from the baking heat of thornveldt savanna to the humid heart of rainforest trails; from palm-lined and deserted beach crossings, to the vibrant streets of tropical island villages ... these are just some of the glorious scenes which created the backdrop for the @rodriguesisland #TrailDeRodrigues #trailrun 💚🏝️💙 There were Grannies and Grandpa's, and toddlers galore. There were octogenarians. There were incredibly brave paraplegics in wheelchairs, and kids with disabilities. And literally people of all shapes and sizes. The annual Rodrigues Island Extreme trail run brought the whole of the island to a standstill, with an incredible 1400x competitors over the four distances 👏👏👏 Of course, there were thoroughbred trail runners from all over the world, mostly French-speaking nations, with a seriously competitive field. @christiaangrey (4th) and @landiegreyling (2nd) had to work hard to claim their podium spots, mostly along typical island terrain where the free kilometers are few and far between. Sandy beaches, craggy volcanic ridgelines, humid forest sections, coastal forest and slippery tree roots: these were just some of the natural obstacles faced en route... Great to see @laurent_valette73, @yandema__, @clo.harper and the athletes of @reuniontrailacademy hammering home! Third day in a row exploring the incredible trails of #RodriguesIsland, courtesy of @ile_rodrigues_tourisme. During @expafrica, I had to rush at speed along the trail from the village of #StFrancoise, but today made for a more leisurely exploration. This may not make sense if you're in the company of two world-class #trailrun legends like @landiegreyling and @christiaangrey, so let me explain... We had their 13-month old Baby Christopher with us. And he was fast asleep, in a @thule pram. With a base filled with beer, provisions, #snorkel kit, and a few kitchen sinks. The trail very quickly morphed into a series of cliff scrambles and boulder-hopping descents, so in the end Christiaan and I carried the young Royal in his lofty carriage in the worthy new #ar discipline of #HikeAPerambulator ... something to consider for your next event, @heidikinetic 🤔😅🙄 The cold @phoenixbeermru at the amazing #ansebouteille - together with unmatched natural grandeur and superb snorkelling - is what makes @rodriguesisland such a truly unique destination. On Sunday, 1400x trail runners will tackle the extreme #trailrodrigues to pass along this spectacular coastline ...
