#taylor’s roll put #has me thinking sooooo much about H’s whole pr/brand/strategy #and my thoughts have been like falling into place #and it’s just very frustrating #to me bc her absolute MASTERY of building her brand #makes hshq’s mess #even more messy for me #there are MANY points to bring #but the one I am thinking tonight #is how she operates on an even bigger platform so she is one of the few ppl I think are proper to compare H to #and she shows how you can have absolutely crafted to the tee strategies where almost nothing is spontanous and everything is planned and $$ #is front and center and YET feel personal and intimate and like she is our buddy and that we know her and she knows us and she likes us #the reason given for H’s distant persona is privacy but what this comparison shows is that you can get privacy without giving up warmth #harry on stage is such a drastic contrast to every other imput we have from him/his brand its kinda jarring #but it doesnt HAVE TO BE THIS WAY and he doesn’t need to sacrifice privacy to still craft a warmer closer persona. thats what I have been #thinking tonight. like I know 98% of you don’t follow or even like her. but trust ME when I say that being a fan of both its like oil #and water when it comes to how their public persona is. i genuinely feel like I know her. I DONT!! but thats what I feel. and I only feel li #I know H bc I am a super fan. but thats not what his brand portrays. also and this point is more nuanced so bear w me. there is an element #that comes from this brand of Cool and Private that i KNOW is completely inaccurate like I would put my hand on the fire over this but #hshq OFTEN puts out things or implies it that H is Cool and Different and would not like want to hang out w normal ppl that are not Cool #which one I don’t care if it is true and two I dont think it is true but its something that doesnt sit well w ppl. taylor has a persona that #seems like even tho she is a trillionaire she would still sit on your couch and drunk your grocery store wine and talk about dumb shit #this is largely because of ppl like fucking KID HARPOON who are into makinng harry seem like a weird etheral being and not just. a dude #but anyway. i think this is not great. and outside of this corner MANY ppl are fans of both like me. and this is v noticeable even if ppl #dont articulate it like this. and I think he is gonna have to pivot this strategy. i just hope they do it before ppl get more annoyed #and start being even meaner to him than they already are

#yes i hate story times #our story times are aimed at the preschool set... and the only kids who are coming are the Under Threes #they're not old enough to understand hardly any of the concepts (letters/numbers/colors/sequences and patterns/etc) #they don't have the attention span to sit through even one mf picture book #they mostly don't even have the coordination to do fucking Head Shoulders Knees and Toes #WHAT ARE THEY GETTING OUT OF THIS???????? nothing!!!!! they're dragged there by their moms and the squirm and run and whine and cry #the ENTIRE time and the moms are chatting with each other and letting the kids do whatever #and it's SO FRUSTRATING for US bc we're having to shout over fussing infants and chatty toddlers bc the parents are sooooo self-involved #so the employees are frustrated bc we're doing our regular Dog and Pony Show to a loud and disruptive crowd #and the toddlers are frustrated bc they literally do not have the attention span for this. they aren't there in their development yet #and the moms have started to get Big Mad bc we're limiting how many ppl can be in story time (20 ppl) #so the moms who come too late to get their admission tickets are pissed off that they came all the way to the library for nothing #and other moms are just blasting right past the 'STOP! STORY TIME IS FULL!' sign that we post #and it makes the room even more crowded and loud and awful #one of the behaviors that really cheeses my crackers the most is when they kids are having a picnic buffet during story time #like... they're just standing there. eating their snacks. and staring at us while we do stupid dances and read silly stories and sing songs. #it feels like they're just staring at us like we're a tv show. they could have stayed home for that. #and when the weather is treacherous and moms still show up for story time.... it blows my mind #they really risked life and limb (literally-- we're talking blizzards and ice storms and heavy snow accumulation) so they could play on #their phone for 25 minutes while their toddlers ran around a room and collided with other toddlers while i sang Hot Potato in the background #the wiggles ftw #long tags #whining

My sympathy and understanding for certain co-workers of mine not checking stuff before they start work is just about gone.  Sorry, no.  They have full and easy access to looking this stuff up, and I’m so over the excuses of it being hard.  I just did it in less than 2 minutes via a platform I rarely use and they use all the time.  They chose not to do it.  I get that they’re busy, but they keep making their lives (and mine!) harder by NOT checking this first.

Not to beat this dead horse but as I am fighting my way through the last hundred-odd pages of The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, I keep thinking about the usage of character perspective in science fiction. At the start of the book, we're with Rosemary all the time. She's easily the least interesting character, but she's our little pinhole into this world and I like that.

When her plot line is resolved halfway through (with like, stunningly little resistance, as is customary for this limp stained glass window of a novel), we're suddenly adrift, tossed between Sissix and Kizzy and Ashby and whomever else happens to be around. This might work all right in lit fiction, but in a world meant to be disorienting and unfamiliar, using the protagonist as a root stops being optional. I'm reminded of Genly Ai of The Left Hand of Darkness fame, how we spend hundreds of pages learning with him, how even when we switch to Estraven's perspective, it only gives context to Genly's experience and only after the world has been thoroughly established. Even then, LHOD takes place on a single planet to mitigate potential loss of interest and only swaps between those two characters. It's masterfully done by one of the if not THEE greatest sci-fi writer of her generation and even le Guin knows when to draw the line and pull us back.

Conversely, Chambers—enamored with this rich and interesting world and every rich and interesting character living within it—leaves us adrift in a sea of information with no root to show us why it's important. You know those posts that are like "lol why is every planet in sci-fi just one kind of people when every world is infinitely rich and diverse?" This reads as a direct response, a novel trying to be both road trip and road map. The reason why Star Trek and so forth focus solely on one type of people per episode is because trying to fit in everything or even multiple things about every single world is—crucially—disorienting and boring. An entirely unique science fiction or fantasy world is nothing without a character and a conflict to ground it. Without that, the best it can be is vaguely interesting background noise.
