The inclusion of Hermes as a father figure rather than a narrator in Hadestown is the single best thing Anaïs Mitchell could possibly have done for the framing of her story in this essay I will-

#Soph’s posts #Hadestown #because!!! Because when Hermes is involved in the story it completely reshapes the way it’s being told!!! #He’s a character AND a narrator. The story is being told by somebody inside it #Because it’s not just a story even to those that know it’s a story. It’s both a life lived and a tale told. #The narrator is the thing that connects us to any story because without one we wouldn’t HAVE a story #And having a narrator who is also a character and is AWARE of that dual role integrates the audience brilliantly #As opposed to off-broadway when Hermes is inherently separate from the narrative or characters #He’s telling the story without being any kind of invested in it or doing anything to change it #Damon and Nabiyah’s Hadestown IS like a myth because it’s a story being presented by Hermes the showman #But Reeve and Eva’s Hadestown is closer to the audience because of Hermes’s closeness with Orpheus #And Orpheus is changed by Hermes’s new roles as well!!! #When he has a father figure to prompt him and help him he develops this otherworldly innocence #Which fits him much better than the separation between his magic and his personality #With Hermes pushing the story Orpheus goes from ignoring the world to not knowing it’s there #Like in come home with me where “don’t come on too strong” makes “come home with me” way sweeter #Damon’s Orpheus and his narrative would be way closer to Reeve’s if he had Andre’s Hermes #Damn I really did write an essay huh

Sometimes I wonder why I’m drawn to cyberpunk media… and then I realize:

My day job is sitting in front of multiple monitors, hyped up on stimulants, working 8* hours while i zone out to breakcore and write code. A good chunk of my free time is dedicated to repairing and working on the old computers I have, trying to make them keep up with the ever-advancing tech I can’t afford. I take pills that fundamentally modify my body. Machines constantly monitor my movements and behaviors. There are people I love that I know only because of the animated hunk of metal in my pocket.

i think in a lot of ways, cyberpunk / sci fi capture the absurdity of my day to day. It’s an exaggeration of the fatigue, ecstasy, and nihilism of modern tech.

But also like. We’re not just that. I draw, go to the beach, leave my phone in the car. There’s pockets of nature in this weird hellscape of a city. I talk to people, I love those people. I go to the forest when I can. I have to get out of it sometimes.

Nobody should live on a single axis of existence, yknow? Don’t sell your soul to one thing. Get out, feel the air. Go stare at some bugs. Meet some weird people. Take care of yourself 💜

When Kate's family leave ended, she was ready to return to work. She missed the lab and her coworkers, but especially Sophie. Who hugged her as soon as she arrived.

Kate expressed her condolences for the loss of her grandmother before they began swapping information about her new baby and Sophie's new husband. Finally, Kate asked, “So did I miss anything here?” and Sophie’s face lit up.

“Last week, they brought in a bunch of new equipment from some government contract, real high-tech looking. But they’ve locked it all in the extraterrestrial area, level five security clearance only.” 

Kate froze, thinking of another lab only miles away. What if someone was trying to grow the Mother or something like her here? Determined to investigate, she waited until her boss, Virginia, was on her lunch break, then “borrowed” a key from her to sneak in.

The room was filled with all kinds of devices and monitors, but towards the back stood a large green doorway that seemed to call to her. Knowing she wouldn't have long, she quickly calibrated the machine. Desperately making adjustments until she could hear voices on the other side.

They were hard to hear, and the language was certainly not Simlish but she could make out a female voice. It sounded as if she was giving orders, as other voices occasionally chimed in with short synchronized replies. She was just about to test the talk button when she heard footsteps coming up the hallway.

She shut down the machine and raced back to her station without getting caught. For the rest of her shift, her mind was lightyears away.

At the end of the day, Virginia approached Kate. Her heart started pounding, bracing for a reprimand. Instead, she curtly informed her that she had been promoted. Tomorrow, she would receive her updated security clearance and her new master key.

Kate had to stop herself from laughing.

what if canon time loop in the halite theorem

#SO i am not totally sold on this. but it makes sense it makes SO much sense. #like i wouldn't have to rearrange anything at all and it's pretty obvious where each character is in the loop and what the conditions are #Hail is definitely the One ACTUALLY experiencing and aware of the time loop. she sees it as a hail mary from the universe. #BITING this makes so much sense. and aki+aphra are key players in the time loop mechanics but aren't aware of it #maybe it triggers when they are both resurrected?? #deep breaths. i just think time loops are so fucking cool. and of COURSE Hail's power is time related she's an ouranic undead #this makes further sense bc as much as i talk about aki and aphra. hail is the most important character in the story. if anyone is actually #the center of the universe it's her #in order of awareness of the loop: hail bex soph aphra aki #hail: fully aware and can manipulate some conditions of the loop. prophetic to others. #bex: vaguely pseudo-aware knows something's off but she's got other things going on and this may as well happen #soph: even less directly aware but is so drift compatible with bex that he gets the reading #aphra: in conscious denial of how wrong with this version of reality is. having a great time being in denial. #aki: she may be having the actual Visions and Symptoms of the time loop but my girl is so clueless 5ever #basically Hail is the one aware of and studying it. aphra is the one that caused it. aki is the one who breaks it #ohhhh and what if it breaks for everyone else except aki in the end. she just never resets it and continues in the singular timeline #but is still In The Loop technically
