kevin pearson pulled out the valentine he got from sophie, the one that he’s carried with him for over 30 years, and said “I have always carried you, soph.” like that isn’t the most romantic thing in the entire world. OH, I AM SOBBING.

This is us is a masterpiece of a show with great writing. If Kevin ends up with Sophie it will be even more epic. Even though some may claim that him ending up with her is cliché, I think any other alternative would be a disservice to his character and the journey he’s been trough. Kevin Pearson isn’t a stereotypical pretty boy. He’s one of the most layered characters on the show. At first glance, he seemed shallow and arrogant but what he truly was is broken. Here you have this man who has been in love with the same woman his entire life, but was incapable of being dependable enough to deserve her, finally putting all of the pieces of his life together to be the version of himself that he always wanted to be. He went through so many emotional battles to reach the point where he is at now. He had to endure the loss of his dream career, the trauma that came from the sudden demise of his father and an alcohol addiction that kept him from being his true self. The grief of his father's death is what broke him and fractured his sense of self, and it ultimately ruined his relationship with Sophie and he ended up being a shadow of the man he was meant to be. Throughout the show, we’ve seen several incredible women give him love and admiration, but he has never been able to receive it and love them. His first reunion with Sophie didn’t last because he was still so unsteady at that time. He had to really heal himself before he could find her again. He’s now emotionally stable and grounded, which are two qualities he lacked since his adulthood. Rebuilding his relationships with his mother and siblings, finding his uncle, and becoming a father have given him a new perspective on life, and now he’s finally ready to realise that he's a great man, the kind of man that Jack would be proud of. He has always been great but he has never been able to believe it enough to let himself be happy with Sophie. Learning how to be a great son, brother or father didn't come naturally to him, but now that he’s here, he can be a great husband to Sophie. He has earned the ring her mother left for her. This isn’t a story of a man going back to a broken relationship or a woman fixing a man, it’s the story of an emotionally traumatised man who was constantly put down by life, who got up and fixed himself time and time again, who made himself whole to be able to have a profound committed relationship with the one woman who has loved him at all stages of his life. All the stars have lined up so he can end up with the woman he has truly loved all his life. If that’s not great storytelling, I don't know what is ❤️

I think people often discredit how important it was to Kevin that Jack knew Sophie and how important it was for Sophie that Jennifer knew Kevin. Considering how much both Kevin and Sophie have carried their parents with them throughout their lives, I think it's a fact that brings them both a lot of peace.
