Sophie Prestigiacomo’s ‘Homo Algus’
The figures are modeled with mud and seaweed, with the algae drying within the elements. The colors, textures, and “skin” of the creatures change over time, along with the organic landscape they inhabit. The sculptures offer a chance for onlookers to not only visit the site, but also engage in dialogue about biodiversity and our relationship to these lands.

Sophie Prestigiancomo
Home Algus
Installed in Marshes Nature Reserve in the Gulf of Morbihan in France, in 2016
I came across Sophie Prestigiacomo’s work recently and thoroughly enjoyed their use of natural mediums to sculpt these human-like figures. Working with and of their environment, this piece caught my attention for various elements of an anthropocentric public work.
The work depicts human-esk swamp creatures made of mud, seaweed and drying algae. Active adaptation of the sculptures’ shape and textured skin from the environment and element the work resides. The artists intended legacy: biodiversity and the relationship humans have with the land.

SCULPTOR SOPHIE PRESTIGIACOMO REFLECTS OUR TENSE DIALOGUE with nature with her swamp creature in the Nature of Séné in the Gulf of Morbihan in France. Land Art is the will to establish a direct relationship between man and nature. So, although still very little practiced on the territory of the Natural Reserves, it finds its place there. The first appearance of Homo algus dates from Spring 2012, in Sene. Two creatures emerged from the mud to position themselves at the edge of the coastal path, then on the marshes at the Séné Nature Reserve. They toured with men for several weeks, arousing surprise and fascination. Their sudden disappearance has created a vacuum among the inhabitants: reciprocal tame-up did not It was still only sketched. But the nascent legend wanted them to have gone then to seek the rest of their tribe. And they come back to settle in the Séné Marsh Nature Reserve! More numerous, more curious and doubtless convinced by the first visit of their two ambassadors that there was a relationship to be established with the human race.

"Homo Algus",  Mysterious Swamp Creatures by Sophie Prestigiacomo
Sculptor
Sophie Prestigiacomo
reflects our ongoing and tense dialogue with nature with her swamp creatures in the Marshes Nature Reserve of Séné in the Gulf of Morbihan in France. It began with two mysterious beings a few years ago, and after they departed, a recent crowdfunding campaign to bring eight total to the reserve. Or as the campaign stated (as translated from French): “more numerous, more curious and probably convinced by the first visit of their two ambassadors, there was a relationship tie with the human species.”
