i don't know what compelled me to do this but here's a list of how mcsm incorporated and expanded on elements from the game and mc community!!!

along with aspects of how mcsm was written that i really like!!!!

allot of the following will be taken either from things i noticed in the game itself and things the head writer @/stirpicus's blog from like. years ago

so first of all, i love the direction they went with in mcsm. for the time it was made, you'd think they'd make something relating to Alex and Steve and even herobrine, or even the popular overworld vs nether trope that was around, BUT NO!! they introduce a new set of characters in an original setting with its own story

and having the ender dragon already be beaten and a finished arc is a breath of fresh air in my opinion

so instead they took the second(?) strongest boss, mixed it with the command block which they made stronger/more powerful than it already is and made the wither crazier than before, thats just fucking cool

the (old) order of the stone are awesome too, they took different types of mc players and made them into a group of heroes!!!! and it isnt the usual group from nowadays, like sure a warrior and an alchemist are typical but they threw in a builder, an alchemist, and griefer!!! thats fucking awesome!!!! and ivor as the alchemist isnt even the biggest fighter (because he's fucking old) which i love, they use his other characteristics as an advantage. before the ninja arc obviously

AND THE ORDER'S TEMPLE AND THE TRACKING MAAAPP!!! i love how they used and expanded on that feature

SAME WITH THE RAILWAY SYSTEM!!! TO TRAVEL LONG DISTANCES IN THE NETHER!! i wish we got more of that x(

now this might be biased cause i don't like ep2 thaaatt muchhh, though it deserved so much more when it comes to redstonia and boomtown, tho the concepts alone are really creative

only thing i can point out from ep3 is the grinder from soren's fortress, and how its just the actual mechanism to get loot and xp in game but on a larger scale. and the fact that the amulet doesnt work in the nether/end like any other tool of that sort!! small details!!!!

and this is just my opinion but soren's studies on the enderman feel like a jab at those enderman related theories from years ago xd

the far lands. i just really love that they added the farlands in ep4 was it?? and i love how they utilized the aspect of enchanting weapons, which they kept it as epic as in ep4 x(

the portal arc.. I LOVE THE PORTAL ARC. SO MUCH. it uses allot of aspects outside of mc survival like mini games and the community itself!!

like. episode 5 is literally just sky block, obviously. and it's got spawn eggs, which without the world build in the network would've been hard to implement BUT THEY STILL MANAGED TO ADD IT IN!!!

ep6 is murder mystery with some iconic mcyt. literally what more do you want!!!

ep7, pama's inspired by players who make redstone computers in the game like said here!!! thats so fucking cool!!!!

EP8 COULD'VE AND SHOULD'VE HAD SO MUCH MOREEE!!! and its inspiration is obvious too; the different mini games in mc and respawning!! i love that they added respawning in at least one episode

like the way they took elements from and outside of mc survival is so creative, especially with how they were implemented (even if sometimes they weren't accurate) and all the world build!!!!

season 2's more focused on the idea and limits of creative mode or the idea of a "god" in mc, and definitely has its fair share of world build, which is still really cool

i actually like how they went about revealing the admins and their connection to the overworld without it messing up the lore in s1 or having it come out of nowhere in a bad way!! like old OLD myth turned real trope worked out well here

also it felt like the sea temple scene was foreshadowing the aquatic update that was to come in mc at the time!!

and one thing about the sea temple, when the origins of the world and the admin were being explained, i'm pretty sure they mention how "the world was flat until the admin gave it hills and trees" and stuff, referencing both super-flat worlds and foreshadowing the bedrocking event!!!

and idk how many people actually know this but the structure block is an actual thing in mc?? i did NOT know about that till recently it's embarrassing

might just be me but i like to think that the original mobs romeo makes are also a subtle reference at mods and how people can mess around with that kinda stufff.... idk tho

from this point on i can't think of anything else in s2 that i could put in this ramble, but overall, mcsm writers and develops were fucking geniuses and i love how they put everything together ^_^ ty for any1 who read this far, and feel free to leave your own insights!!!!!

Before paradise existed there was actually a different island, with different shapes and different guardians !

Any trace of the old islands have since been destroyed though

Every 200 years new guardians get created (so they don't get crusty n dusty n weak)

(Hshshs I'm getting sidetracked lemme actually tell u about them-)

Their names were bee, cipher, kiwi n soren

At this point in time no one really knew about the corruption yet (even the guardians barely knew anything about it) which was a huge dissatvantage when the corruption started (which inevitably caused their and every other shapes' death)

Their job now is to prepare every new generation of guardians for a corruption and teaching them how to dash n stuff

Also in my au every corrupted shape has their own level , and even tho the guardians aren't fully corrupted (since guardians literally cannot get fully corrupted) they also have their own levels (which are the tutorial levels)

(Bee = corrupted, cipher = chronos , kiwi = milkyways , soren = logic gatekeeper)

Some random Tellius thoughts

So for the most part I adore the idea of beorc, laguz, and the “branded” (shame there was never a less derogatory word invented for them) but there are some parts that still make me go like

Like how the laguz parent loses their ability to shapeshift, all laguz-related powers, and extended lifespan, but the beorc parents… aren’t affected at all? And when exactly in the pregnancy/birthing process does that happen? Does it start at conception? Or only when the child is born? And if it’s not a divine curse, then how does it happen in the first place?

Also why do the laguz have an instinctual fear/disgust of people who are branded? It’s not a taught prejudice; Vika had no idea Micaiah was branded, only that being around her made her jumpy and uneasy. Why is this never explored more fully???

Soren spent a lot of time around laguz in both games. Granted, he mostly avoided them like the plague in the first game, but in the second he is more at ease around them. But are any of the laguz unnerved by him? Logic would dictate that at least some of them were. And at what point — if any — did they grow used to him? Did the fact that he was branded ever become common knowledge?

(In one chapter, if you have Soren use a long-range spell on Micaiah, Soren seems to have no qualms seemingly shouting across the battlefield about how they are both branded, which I find hilarious, tho I don’t think that is meant to be taken literally)

Finally, and this is more wish fulfillment, I wish the branded Had been able to shift— maybe into something in-between a laguz in their human form and a laguz in their beast/bird/dragon form. Something monstrous.

I just want a Soren with horns, fangs, and claws, okay? Is that so much to ask?

Can you imagine how cute it would have been if baby Ike had given his sandwich to a little feral dragon baby Soren? Just imagine it.

(The fact that dragon laguz have no draconic qualities — no horns, wings, or tails — in their human form will forever be a huge disappointment to me. I know Why it’s that way. The Almedha and Pelleas plot never could have worked otherwise. I just like horned characters, and they had the opportunity to include some, and they squandered it.)

Anyway these are just some random/scattered thoughts I had. I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has similar thoughts

“Fractures” Keyart

I noticed a bunch of things about the fractures keyart on the dragon prince website before season 4 came out, and then after it came out the things made sense. And I’m only now posting it

so in case you haven’t seen it yet, this is the artwork:

Notice anything odd about it?

1- Rayla has a crack down the middle of her face. No one else has a crack so disruptive. She’s changed throughout her journeys to find Viren, different to the past seasons. She’s grown, changed, experienced things that we don’t know. She’s broken, split in two halves - her past self (energetic, alive, not optimistic but at least ready to help others if she can), and her new self (“we can’t save everyone, soren”, the girl who failed for two years, the girl who lost everyone and everything)

2- Everyone’s eyes are open but Viren’s are closed - Viren has also changed. His character has developed in ways none of us thought were possible. His eyes are closed- he can’t see where his path is going. He’s also dead so that could be why. It could also be that he’s blind to what’s right and wrong now - he spent two years dead, without dark magic amplifying his bad parts, without aaravos whispering in his ear and amplifying the amplified bad parts. Now he’s confused, in the dark, blinded.

3- Aaravos is the only one without any damage to his little section thingy - everyone else has cracks, big or small, sometimes interrupting their face and sometimes not. If they don’t have cracks, they have shards pointing at their face threateningly. But Aaravos’ is completely intact and whole. He’s the mastermind, the one behind everything that’s happened. The entire show so far has all gone according to his huge, sinister plan. Idk every step is of his plan, but it feels like every single thing that has happened is part of his plan. Even the good things. Like Rayla getting the coins back means they’ll be spending heaps of time trying to get them out of the coins, meaning they won’t be spending enough time trying to stop Aaravos. And because they were trapped with dark magic, they might need to use dark magic to free them, meaning they’re even more of a target to Aaravos. Or even Amaya and Janai getting married. Aaravos wants to be free and (I think) to rule all of Xadia. But a lot of feuds start to tear apart the sunfire elves and the humans, even tears apart some sunfire elves from each other and humans from each other. (Like Janai and Karim. And humans taking sides of elves in the feuds and fights, causing rifts between families and friends, and vice versa). If they’re all torn apart, that leaves Aaravos free to (presumably) rise up and make them unite somehow in some evil way and stop the fights by making them all follow him. Idk if that makes sense, it made sense in my head but then I forgot how words work. Just trust me here, everything is according to his plan. And bad things too, like the obvious: Claudia getting the map so she can free him. Other stuff too probably. (I’m really tired I can’t think. If you can think of any other examples tho, lemme know! I’m interested to hear everyone’s theories and stuff cos my own are pretty messy)

4- Like Rayla, Claudia has a crack in her face, but rather than in the middle, it’s only breaking off the part of her hair that’s still its natural colour. Or, in other words, it’s breaking off the parts of her that are yet to be touched by dark magic.

5- Terry is on the opposite side of the mirror (or whatever it is) to Claudia and Viren, despite being “on their team”. He travels with them. He’s with them all the time. He helps them and supports them. He’s dating Claudia. But honestly it feels like he’s on the wrong side. Presently the only exposure he’s had to Viren is what Claudia has told him (and Claudia reveres Viren, so he’d only hear good things), and Viren in a weird place both mentally and physically, so he’s never been exposed to the real bad evilness that everyone else saw in season 3. As for Claudia, they’re dating (Claudia might be using him or something, their relationship feels really weird but not in a fun way, but that’s a post for another day), so it’s hard for Terry to see her bad sides. But near the end, he starts to see some cruelty from her, so I’m hoping that over time he’ll finally realise. He’s like Soren - a good heart and a good person, but on the wrong side that he thought was the right side.

6- This one’s pretty small, but everyone is looking left or right, up or down, but aaravos is looking directly through the mirror, at the audience, at his freedom.

From what grave did I come? Of what evil mixture was I compounded?

Alright, this is my last picture from an originally conceived regency AU, now switched to a more forgiving, and honestly more to my taste gothic AU.. oh yeah..

I now have an even vaguer time frame about which I know very little historically to play with.. but who needs to know anything about gothic other than brooding mansions, stormy weather and slightly insane men resurrecting things that should stay dead?

So…

This is the point in the story after Kpp’Ar got consumption and Viren heals him at huge and irreversible costs to his smokin' good looks.. he subsequently spends a lot of time skulking in the basement and examining/getting possessed by Kpp’Ar’s antique mirror..

Fortunately?? They discover they can communicate with the ghost of Aaravos through it, and that his oddly well preserved mummified corpse lies buried somewhere deep in the Katolis catacombs..

And one dark and stormy night they decide to raid the grave and attempt to bring him back to life so Aaravos can fix Viren..

Does this go well? Ummm..

Have a few hundred years of death done much for the sparkly elf’s sanity? I’ll leave you to figure that out..

Or his irresistible looks? Trust me ain’t no one gonna be thirsting for this reincarnation.. well maybe Viren..

But as was pointed out to me, these guys are glugging laudanum like water and all their hare-brained schemes seem like a good idea at the time..

Kpp’Ar will probably stretch that thin and elastic line between wildly irresponsible and plain ol' deranged, and Viren uh… will probably stretch many lines while feeling an ever growing sense of dread, like he's walked into some Edgar Allan Poe story by mistake.. or something?

Oh.. and I really want them to have Claudia.. but I haven’t figured out a way to do that yet.. not Soren.. haha sorry Soren but honestly you wouldn’t last five minutes in this AU anyway..

Like a lot of other dumb stuff that exists in my brain this probably shouldn’t see the cold light of a grey and gloomy day cracking in through the curtains..

Tho I am also considering shelving this for Halloween, given the new spooky vibes, which has the added bonus of being able to -

The Dragon Prince Thoughts Season 4 Episodes 1 and 2

ok so i read ttm and dear callum (and cried over both of them but that’s not important) and by my understanding that’s the only thing i had to read to understand what’s happening so i think i’m good

Episode 1

-“rebirthday” oh this is gonna hurt

-if dark magic eventually makes your hair turn white then why isn’t viren’s hair also white also he’s old

-bruh what is this sparkly place and why did it turn viren into a game piece

-just callum being in the same room with the mirror is making me uncomfortable

-relieved to know that callum is still just as much of a dork as he used to be

-NEW SPELL IN THE FIRST THREE MINUTES

-just thinking about all the new spells were gonna be seeing makes me so excited

-soren is also exactly the same

-crow master finally getting the appreciation he deserves

-callum being excited about his amazon package, he is all of us

-LOOK AT HIM

-ezran literally arranged bait his own dramatic entrance

-imagine waking up to find out you’ve been dead for two years and in order to stay not dead you have to free a magical being from his ancient prison and you have less than 30 days to do it and then your daughter brings out her boyfriend who’s an elf (and you were trying to kill all elves last time you were alive)

-do you ever see a sad scene coming and you just have to pause it and prepare yourself for a second because the second i saw callum on that balcony i knew

-you can tell just from this thirty seconds that ezran has been callum’s therapist for to last two years

-🎶it’s my party and i’ll cry if i want to🎵

Episode 2

-are they really expecting the staff to still be there?

-ezran literally never questions any of callum’s dorkiness he’s always just like “you do you big bro”

-ZYM HAS GROWN SO MUCH OMG

-also ibis going from “powerful sky mage” to “dragonsitter” is so funny to me like there are so many more important things for him to do but nope he’s here trying to convince the prince to eat his vegetables

-also i’m pretty sure i’ve said this before i’m gonna ask again, are the runes for the wing spell tattooed on ibis’s arms or does he just like regularly repaint them? or after you do the spell once are they just there permanently? and if that’s so does callum also have the runes on his arms? he has to in some way because he just did the wing spell last episode

-THATS WHAT IM SAYING

-can’t tell if viren is acting like this to terry because he is an elf or just because he’s his daughter’s boyfriend

-why did karim look at gren and amaya? does this dude really think amaya is cheating on his sister with her best friend? has he not heard of lesbians?

They saw the mothers son leave his room like every other day, ready to head down stairs and start on his usual studies. It was their smaller house elf Bumpy that stopped him enroute.

“Master Addams?” Said the small, sweet creature “I have the displeasure of sharing this…but your mother passed in the night” said bumpy with a regretful tone. Soren felt like the air was sucked from his lungs at the words. His Mother is gone, after all the years of heartache, for longing for her husband and forgetting to be a mother, she’s finally gone. Soren should be relieved, should be happy for her, she’s finally with her one true love. Yet he can’t help the tugging that starts in his chest, echoing through his slowly rising heartbeat. ‘It’s for the best’ he tells himself. She’s happy now. No more sitting by the windows, watching the seasons pass. No more laying in bed, waiting full moon after full moon, for death to finally bring her peace. She’s dead. He no longer has to stand idle by and watch her whither. She’s dead. He no more has to check she’s still breathing when he checks on her in the mornings. She’s dead. He no more has to look in the face of his mother and wish it were his father instead.

“Soren?” He hears her soft voice from around the corner of the hallway as his little sister peers around. She’s barely even a year younger, only fourteen, yet he feels like he’s so much older at a mere fifteen. He knows she’s already heard, no point saying it again. Yet she looks at him, eyebrows pinched and mouth trembling. “She can’t really be…”

“It’s okay” He’s trying to be nice, be comforting for her, like the elves were when they had nightmares that they couldn’t shake in the night. This was one of those. Yes. A nightmare. And Maisie just needed comforting.

“She can’t be…” Maisie’s voice is wavering, her eyes becoming glassy as her bottom lip trembled.

“It’s okay” He said again. Though, it’s almost as if he’s trying to comfort himself instead.

“Soren, it’s not true. Say it’s not true” Maisie started looking angry, as tears started falling past her cheeks and landing on her collar. Her words were wobbling through the temper.

“Maisie, it’s okay” he can’t keep this up if she gets angry, he won’t be able to. Not if he doesn’t believe it himself.

“Stop saying that!” Maisie almost yelled as her lip began trembling again, she thumped his chest. Once. Twice. “She’s okay! She- she just needs her morning tea!” Maisie stuttered out as she tried to yell, her voice only breaking. Tears continued to well in her eyes and stream down her cheeks as she tried moving past him to their mothers bedroom. Soren wouldn’t let her past. “She’s okay, please-“ Maisie tried hitting his chest once more, tho he just grabbed her wrists and stopped her from moving.

“She’s dead!” Soren almost yelled, taking Maisie by shock as she just stared up at him wide eyed. “She. Is. Dead! And she isn’t coming back!” Soren reiterated sternly. Maisie’s nose twitched, trying hard to not scream and cry. She tore her arms away from his grasp and was quick to run down the stairs and out of the house. Running towards the forest beyond their gardens. Soren just stood there in the hallway, feeling completely empty and yet so overwhelmed.

Maisie ran and ran, twigs and leaves cracking and crunching beneath her bare feat, scratching at them as she tore through the forest. Branches of trees and thorns reaching for her, tearing her arms as she ran past. She ran until the ground became soft and she found a small clearing. She turned around every which way, like she was looking for something, anything. Feeling the soft moss beneath her feet was nice, it felt a lot nicer than the sharp pain of a snapping twig. Though what didn’t feel nice was the knife in her throat. The pain that twisted it so. The way her eyes stung with rage. She looked around, for help, for someone to gently remove the knife before it’s ripped out by her own sorrow and grief. She could feel her anger twisting the knife, ready to yank it with any sharp breath. ‘It’s okay’, ‘it’s okay’ she repeated to herself under shallow breaths as she searched and searched for…something. And with the jolt of her heart, the knife was wrenched from her throat. She let out bellowing screams of sadness and anger that ripped through the forest. She fell to her knees, screaming and crying, waves and gusts of deep blue sent out in tides that left dark, glowing, blue indents on the trees. Pushing the trees outward, forcing them over.

Soren heard the screams from his home, and was quick to run through the gardens and toward the forest. Worry moving his feet faster than he realised. He ran through the forest, looking for his sister, he doesn’t remember getting there, just wisps of white and grey around him as he moved. One minute at the tree-line, the next deep into the forest. When he finally reached her, all he could see was her on the floor, shaking with each wail. However, he was unaffected by her storm of power, by the blasts of misery and despair that Maisie sent out. He couldn’t feel nor hear it, watching it flow past him like a gentle breeze as he walked towards her. He placed a hand on her shoulder, and it’s like the magic protecting himself started protecting them both. The blue waves swirling around them like a hurricane before stopping and falling to the floor in a heap. Maisie looked up at him, face so full of pain and yet so empty of it.

“it’s okay” Soren said calmly as he knelt beside her and she fell hopelessly into his arms. He personally hates hugs - physical contact at all - and yet, the hug was comforting all the same.

Maisie was angry at her mother for dying, for leaving them and not even having the decency to say goodbye, to give them a good memory for once. She was angry that her mother left before truly being a mother at all. She was young when her father became ill, and yet still so when he past. Her mother spent so much time caring for him, longing for him to be better, she forgot to care for her children. The family elves, Jam and Bumpy, caring for her and Soren since they were of only four and five years. She was nine when her father finally past on, magic keeping him alive for as long as it could. It was the heart ache that slowly killed her mother, started ripping her soul out piece by piece while Maisie and Soren could only watch and do nothing. She misses her mother for what she never was and it makes her angry. She died, she’s gone and Maisie never got to say goodbye. It’s a horrible sadness that overwhelms her and it is exhausting. She was hardly a mother and yet Maisie wants nothing but to curl up in front of the fire while her mother plays with her hair. A memory unknown to her because it simply never happened, only in dreams. She’s full of an untamed temper for her absent mother and a gut full of sorrow for the mother she wished to have.

Maisie woke up to the sound of gentle humming and her hair being stroked back. Her cheeks were wet where she had clearly been crying. She looked around and it was obvious she was in the common room, yet it was empty, must be very late. She looked up at who was holding her and humming such a sweet tune. She looked at his honey brown eyes and freckled cheeks and couldn’t help how she relaxed into his embrace. She wanted to hate it, she’s not even know him a year, and yet here he is holding her like he’s known her a lifetime, soothing her nightmare away. Maisie reached up and placed a hand on his cheek with a gentle smile of thanks, to which he returned. She went to ask where the beautiful melody was from, but as if he read her mind, he was already answering.

“It’s something my mother hummed to me and my sister as children when we had nightmares or couldn’t sleep” he said, a small smile washing over him “figured it might help you” he added. Maisie couldn’t help the wave of tears that washed over her. He has never showed such kindness, she didn’t think he had it in him. Now here he is, relaxing her with his calm humming that his mother sung to him. “You were crying in your sleep, wasn’t quite sure what to do- I’m sorry if I overstepped” Sebastian said with a mild guilty look to him, like he felt bad for helping. Maisie didn’t say anything just wrapped her arms around him and buried her head in the crook of his neck.

“Thank you” she murmured as he tightly wrapped his arms around her.

Idk how to feel about the petrichor farts but the trans colored plant was great. a transplant. im not above a trans pun. Viren wheezing, panting, fighting for his life up that mountain is killing me

Ep3: that whole segment with Ezran's speech, the fight between Ibis and Claudia just. ouch. and god Terry. I really love the way they showed him mourn. the music (and Corvus) was beautiful. like is there ANYTHING Corvus can't do btw?? that man is amazing. the brewing danger between elves and humans is painful, but what i was lowkey kind of hoping for. putting aside centuries (maybe longer? cant remember) of prejudice between both sides just doesnt work on the first go. i feel like the way the human's reception of the dragon queen went so bumpy was also a good indication of how things go wrong. a series of misunderstandings cultivating an untrusting atmosphere that blows up when something really bad happens. Ezran acknowledging that humans have been hurt was great.

(i have suspicions that human-elven relations are going to get worse before they get better tho)

So I'm in love with this series. Mostly. There are a few aspects I'm withholding judgement on until the end, including Callum and Rayla's relationship. I'm going to wait to see how it plays out before I decide if I like them better as a couple or as good friends/found-family-siblings. Also, just to be clear, I love and support LGBTQ+ people, but not the lifestyle.

And I'm really curious to see how Claudia turns out. Her arc is a tricky one—they've done well so far to keep us caring about her even though she's descending a dark path (and has been for a while). Every time she says something about "doing what needs to be done" I cringe and wonder what she and/or Viren was doing when she heard that for the first time. She says it a lot in moments with questionable moral things happening, so whatever it was seems like a pivotal moment in her life.

I hope she turns herself back around because of course I do—I love seeing people break free of abusive/dark cycles, and she's got this inherent kindness that I love, and that kind of story would be awesome and inspiring. But I'm also an author, and I see sooooo much good villain potential in Claudia.

The writers can take either approach and do it well, or either approach and do it poorly. So I'm withholding my final opinion about her arc until it's finished.

i think you should get a badge for being easily scared but still playing omori. the way the story is told is. wowowowo. and the amount of detail that went into the depictions and the small bits hidden here and there.. and the hints that don't seem like hints but they point at the bigger story... aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAA. and the good ending is so....... ;-; i think it took me half an hour to gather myself. i loved the karaoke though... the bad ending will break you worse. i'm actually afraid of playing it

-I also appreciated the fact that, having never fought without the pellet affected them like that, but that they took the time to show they still got the skills intact, it's the emotions that are the "problem".

ok sea of darkness review

great vibes and ambience. unfortunately the world felt too empty. not the setting as a whole (the emptiness added to the vibes) but the ship especially felt like, for as beautiful as it was, there was nothing in the rooms except for places for you to stand and do sudoku. like there were a lot of locations to visit, but not a lot to do as far as exploring and snooping and like. being a detective. i think ran was the first game to really have this problem but this is a more general problem with the later nd games as a whole. e.g. in trt you dust for fingerprints and unlock a security system with a 4 digit code. if trt had been made in 2013-2015 you would have had to recreate the fibonacci sequence with music notes or something in order to achieve the same effect. like why to unlock soren’s tablet did we have to create volcanic winter with pictograms? isn’t the point of a password to be able to quickly and easily access the info on your tablet rather than ruminating over a puzzle, regardless of how fun and cute it is?? volcanic winter should have been a minigame that you could access Inside soren’s tablet, kind of like finger tips for typing, and maybe soren is obsessed w it and makes nancy play and beat him bc he’s bored and lonely and THEN we get to develop soren’s character while integrating the puzzle into the gameplay idk. also why did we have to play 2048 to turn on the lighthouse, that seems like another thing that you would want to do pretty much instantaneously lol. the game throwing in a little meta joke about how unnecessarily complicated it was didn’t make it better. it would have been really cool to actually have nancy go in and collect materials to improvise lighting the lighthouse from scratch, maybe using refraction or fire starting or something (probably impossible w real physics but whatever nancy operated a jetpack in hau who cares). then you get the sense of urgency of running around grabbing items that you’ve seen before but only now have put together how to combine them to solve a puzzle, rather than just sudoku variant #6049283. i’m biased bc i love mechanical puzzles tho.

i actually did like a lot of the puzzles but a lot of them felt like they should have been bonus puzzles, e.g. i liked that the dinner serving puzzle was optional, it felt like a combination of saw bento and ice cooking but less stressful. for some of the nd games i can understand having puzzles (like cur where it’s multiple generations of genuine eccentrics purposefully creating puzzles to stump their ancestors as part of an initiation ritual) but there was absolutely Nothing in lawrence’s character that indicated that he would create something like this for his ancestors to solve (i had the same problem with gth). only sort of related but oh my GOD why did magnus have his stuffed animals like that. towards endgame it really did feel like sudoku after sudoku after sudoku for no reason. and again - i enjoyed the puzzles! i like doing puzzles!! the one puzzle that i REALLY loved was the bilge puzzle with the numbers. it felt like classic nd and was quite hard and the sense of urgency was there. but i’d argue having So Many puzzles dragged the plot to a dead standstill and pulled the focus away from the characters.

speaking of, the characters were fine to great. the culprit was too obvious and there was very little mystery around their motivation for me. gunnar was the best character. elisabet was just kind of there and felt like kyler reskinned and done slightly better. soren was fun. dagny was fine but why did the devs put a big chunk of her backstory dialogue over the heater puzzle, like stop talking i’m trying to concentrate lol. there also wasn’t a whole lot of intrigue wrt the characters. people were surprisingly up front with their motivations (esp dagny) which was fine but i felt like the character twists came too late or not at all. you sort of just got what everybody was about from the moment go and there was no need to delve any deeper. again except for gunnar, whose character revelation was really nice and really beautifully acted.

also there wasn’t really a greater theme connecting all the characters. gth for all its flaws did this really well. in sea they tried to do something like “we all treated [culprit] badly because we’re a small town and we should do better” but we didn’t Really get to see that in action. especially from magnus who outright says this but we never really get to see that in writing throughout the game so it kind of comes out of nowhere from him (unless i’m missing something). also magnus was kind of a joke character w his limericks and his obsession w the ship but again when we met him we didn’t really get any of that. i didn’t buy his and elisabet’s connection or relationship and when they got back together at the end i was like oh. uhh..okay. again inconsistent characterization a la thornton hall for the purpose of cramming puzzles into every last nook and cranny of the game

dagny’s lesbianism was like. nothing. i had heard she was a canon lesbian before playing so i was kind of excited to see what HeR would do with it and when i got to it i was so disappointed but i can’t really put my finger on why. i guess it’s not that it was stated nonchalantly but that it’s completely superfluous to the plot whereas they had PLENTY of chances over their entire catalogue of games to change any number of straight romances into gay ones WHILE tying into character themes and beats but they didn’t (colton comes to mind in particular, maybe deirdre too). however i respect that it made a bunch of people on the nd forums very mad. that made me like it a little more lol

they did a good job with the setting but i wanted them to take it even further. there was a little bit of viking and volcano stuff right at the beginning but it didn't really go anywhere. also so sad we didn't get a nancy drew hot springs epsiode :(

anyway despite all that i really loved the game. it was a solid 7 or 8 out of 10 for me. i’ve said this multiple times but the thing that really sells a game for me is the ambience and sea had that in droves. i am personally not a big fan of the puzzles being almost completely divorced from the story but i respect that that’s some people’s thing. i will probably play it again but boy did the matchy puzzles get old by the end
