im sorry to say this. i also think amy is a little too girlbossified in idw. I DO LOVE A LOT OF HER CHARACTER MOMENTS AS WELL but so much of the early comics with her in them have her stuck in the organizer role, it sucks so bad. im glad they passed that on to jewel and promptly sidelined her because jeez that was a drag. i think amy should be a liiiiiittle more annoying. let her be a little more 12. just turn that knob up a notch or two. the way idw writes girls is weird

Hi, I understand that I'm a bit late but I wanted to throw my hat in the ring about where the concept of the "oh but Persephone really loves Hades!" thing came from.
Long story short, all these bitches are falling for ancient Greek propaganda. In the athenian days, a woman married off would likely never see her mother again, save for the sacred festival dedicated to Demeter. Instead, she would be expected to remain out of the public eye and serve her husband as he pleased, for this was her duty in life. Pretty gross! And especially depressing when you realize that most women weren't even allowed to go in every part of the house. Sometimes, it was seen as shameful for her to even be seen downstairs.
The myths of the time, then, depict their goddesses as one of two things: virginal and working (Artemis, Athena), or married and happy (...more or less). Persephone actually wasn't nearly as big a figure in this category -- You'd actually want to look to Aphrodite, who was a much bigger figure. The myth of Hades and Persephone compares the loss of a daughter in marriage to a loss of a daughter in death. She is "happy" with Hades because she is fulfilling the role that society demanded of her in that time, and it was important to portray her that way. This can be further reflected in how her uncle, Zeus, sometimes arranges the kidnapping without the consent of either Demeter or Persephone -- The wife and daughter had no say in that sort of thing. So when people girlbossify the myth of Hades and Persephone, they're erasing a core societal system that led to the myth in the first place. It's not Hades and Persephone anymore. It loses all concept of loss and grief, and doesn't take into account that the hymn was mostly about Demeter's loss to begin with. They just want to see some tall man get his dick wet.
Of course, this is very surface level, and I'm sorry for sending you so much text! I hope you have a lovely day.
Ayy thanks! I actually knew this bcs im a nerd but its great to see i’ve kickstarted discussion. Im moreso being sarcastic in the ‘how tf did you get this from a myth about women being abused’ sense. Because theres no way a kidnapping of what ancient greeks considered ‘young’ (hence kore and little girl which is… not good considering 14 was a normal age for girls to wed) girls is romantic.

CAMELOT REVIVAL THOUGHTS
Gonna try to be nice because, as an avid Camelot 1967 enjoyer, I know what it's like for everyone to hate on an adaptation you're obsessed with :(
THINGS I LIKED:
The cast are so crazy good. No one needs to hear me talk about how much I love Jordon any more than I already have, Phillipa and Andrew also rocked.
The American accents weren't as noticeable in the show as they were on the cast recording, especially Andrew's. I liked him a lot more on stage in particular.
I loved Merlin's death scene, goodbye you old man. Handled better than other adaptations.
Lancelot's outfits. Lancelot's scenes. Lancelot's songs. LANCELOT.
THE STAGING OF FIE ON GOODNESS IS CRAZYYYYYY. THE BED BEING PUSHED ON AND OFF THE STAGE. AAAAAAAAAAAA
Also it's surprisingly funny? A lot of the jokes worked for me.
THINGS I DID NOT LIKE:
Sorry but barely any lines rewritten for this show were better than the original. The original dialogue just goes so hard, this is significantly weaker.
The impact of the love triangle was nuked. Arthur and Genny having a fake marriage, Genny not being in love with Lance, every line that validated extramarital affairs; these all ruined the impact and devastation of Genny and Lance's betrayal. FUNDAMENTAL MISUNDERSTAND OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL.
Aaron Sorkin does not understand Guenevere even a little bit. He keeps jumping from making her all no-nonsense serious-business in her new dialogue to light-hearted and carefree when she needs to sing a song. Genny was already fleshed-out complex character in the original; torn between her duty, loyalty, and LOVE for Arthur and her simultaneous love and desire for Lancelot. This is just another old man trying to girlbossify a woman who didn't need girlbossification.
The removal of magic isn't bad inherently. The way it's handled however is genuinely insulting to fans of the source material. I feel like they're constantly saying "How STUPID would it be if magic existed. Only an IDIOT would expect something magical to happen here." Like, you can get rid of magic without being condescending about it and alienating your target audience.
WHO decided to remove Lance and Genny from 'Guenevere'?????? That song goes SO hard and you're not gonna show Guenevere at the stake or Lance rescuing her????? WHAT THE HELL
I think my biggest complaint is that when Camelot fell, I just didn't care. Like I didn't feel anything. Maybe I'd feel differently if I actually saw it live, but when Camelot falls in the movie it genuinely hurts my heart and I didn't get that here at all.
Sorry the hater section is so much longer than the lover section but I love the original so much so I just had more to say about it

alright i’m curious, what’s your cinderella hate essay
i got 2 asks for this and i dont want to disappoint The People…
also im putting this under a readmore because it got too long. im sorry for ranting about jojo's bizarre adventure. can you forgive my sins....
TLDR; cinderella (stand) is a love potion, love potions are nonconsensual and not compelling. it rips koichi of his free will, and yukako is able to manipulate him, without any pushback or consequences. there's no growth!!! araki still cannot write women!!!
also aya sucks too. cringe episode. cringe arc.
im so sorry for this incoming text wall
i think the first thing that's really important that i need to get out of the way first is that cinderella's ability IS a love potion. like straight up. and obviously love potion stories are creepy and unconsensual
when i say this, people tend to push back against the idea but its true. how else would you categorize it? koichi would not give yukako the time of day pre-cinderella, even for a second, and in the anime was even seen RUNNING AWAY FROM HER in fear when he saw her on the streets 😭.. and then, suddenly after yukako visits aya once, he is being kind to her. even worried about her. and willing to go to the cafe with her alone.
he is apparently so 'in love' with yukako that he decides to potentially GO BLIND FOR HER??? HUH??? these kids know NOTHING ABOUT EACH OTHER BTW!!! they have no common interests. in their first interactions, yukako thought he was a lying cheater who she needed to fix. and koichi literally hated her, and was terrified of her. she stressed him out so hard that he thought he killed his own stand
like, koichi is incredibly kind and forgiving, but literally nothing in their relationship changed so that he would be comfortable even being near her. its just too sudden. last time they were interacting, koichi was telling her that he hated her and complaining that she "never listens to anything [he says]". she has this pattern of ignoring his opinions and feelings... and it obviously didnt end in yukako falls in love.
also this line:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a picture of diu's official manga translation. aya tsuji is saying, "you're mistaken. in his heart, i'm sure that koichi has fallen in love with you. but his rational mind is still resisting you" /.End ID]
girl "his rational mind"??? you mean the mind that isn't attracted to her in any way.. who remembers the abuse, and how unwilling to change she is 😭
the existence of this arc erases any interesting character growth that yukako could have had. she goes from telling koichi that "i will make you love me, if i can't have you, i'll just kill you, you belong to me" etc etc etc, to "ok, maybe i don't need him after all" at the end of her initial episodes. and then suddenly she regresses back to "actually i do want him" and then she gets him, with no substantial growth on her end.
she isnt kidnapping him this time which is good i guess, but she continues to ignore koichi's free will and agency by "bending fate" so that they can be together. that's just not ok to me
but i think the reason why im so reactive to yukako's situation, and not someone similar like rohan, is that irl mangakas DON'T steal your memories for manga material (i'm pretty sure). but people ARE abused by their romantic partners. yukako's abuse is cartoonish, making koichi eat paper and erasers and building him an electric chair, but its still uncomfortable (especially considering she ends up with him in the end).
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a cap from the jojo manga. yukako says, "and you'll thank me. you'll realize that you need me. you won't be able to go on living without me." koichi is sweating and looks shocked and angry /.End ID]
i also feel like people don't seem to take domestic abuse as seriously with women perpetrators. we girlbossify them instead. it all just feels so icky to me, i cant shake it.
everything is made worse by the fact that araki CANNOT!!! write women or f/m relationships well in early-mid era jojo. rohan, tamami and others in the koichi fanclub have clear character arcs, they get better. yukako just doesn't. or at least it isnt enough
aya tsuji is also a flop of a character as well.. i've never heard anyone talk about this, maybe just out of discomfort, but she seems like a predatory lesbian trope. there are a few scenes where she is touching yukako inappropriately or ogling her (and i know with araki's art, it's hard to remember, but she's 16!). it's honestly just so uncomfortable i hate it lol. it's a shame bc i love seeing stand users who aren't attacking the protags, and instead just use their stand for their jobs… but again. araki cant write women. at least women can actually have stands without dying now. but we are far from stone ocean... we'll get there eventually....
ok tbh i have more thoughts but i think for all of our sanity im going to end it here. also my browser glitched and deleted some of this so i wanna be done with it
listen. if you ship them thats fine, really i cant stop you, though i'd recommend thinking about the implications a little harder. yknow. maybe you could rewrite canon so its not incredibly creepy. bc araki flops sometimes and it is perfectly moral to correct him (i do it all the time!!!!!!!)
and for the people who make abuse jokes with them: you get no bitches. also tell your dad to stop calling me and sending me money, its really desperate and i already have enough boyfriends. its embarrassing

this movie is a fucking insult to its audience though. it's a joke. they girlbossified anne elliot. they took a reserved introverted wallflower of a character (none of this is bad btw, some of us love anne as she is in the source material, some of us identify to her but fuck us i guess??) and trie to turn her into elizabeth bennett 2.0 except not really because lizzie had depth unlike this joke of a character who is no anne, no lizzie, just the personification of bad memes
Tumblr media
Oh Dear Anon!
Before anything I just want to say how I WISH to have the energy to be this passionate about anything. Life postCOVID with a long list of symptoms (I hope they are not long term in my case) have just made me tired of everything all the time, so I wish I had this kind of energy.
All this to say that I know, in my mind, that all this hate comes from a place of profound love to the original book. I get it.
Now, a "fucking insult to the audience"? Anon, not you nor all the die hard Austen fans are the intended audience of this film, I thought it was quite clear after the very first scene. That's why on my post I wrote that if you're not OK with that first scene to run away as fast as you can because you are about to have a horrible time.
Funny enough, I don't think they tried to make Anne into Elizabeth 2.0, but (hear me out), I've been finding several parallels in aesthetic, language and edition with... Birds of Prey, which answers so many questions, from the #girlPower mood, to the narration. I loved Birds of Prey, with its plethora of problems, maybe that and my automatic thought of "oh, this is not Persuasion" and acceptance of that, made me enjoy this film. This idea might make it waaaaaaaay worse for others XD I'm so sorry for putting it in your brains!
Now, I am kind of surprised for the hate of my comment on the crew working. As someone who sometimes works in a crew (I'm poor my friends, I need several jobs), and with several friends who work those jobs (of about 16 hours per day, six days a week), I tend to think kindly about those people: they have NO control over what is going on, have long hours, it is a very VERY tiring and stressing job, and they're the backbone of the industry with no recognition. So yeah, I have empathy for them, I don't see why that made you so angry, but OK I guess.
SO yeah, that movie is not a masterpiece, nor a good adaptation, and I'm pretty sure I didn't say that in any moment. I honestly think that their biggest mistake was keeping the original name and characters, this could have been a nice funny Austen-adjacent film, and that would have been it.
Now, I personally have chosen lately to not shit on other people's work, and have chosen to have a kinder use of the language, so stuff like "this movie was shit and I have no guilt for saying it" don't go with my personal choices, but you can if you want Anon, it is your experience and I see you and get you.
I hope after writing all that you went and cleaned your eyes with the 1995 Persuasion, because I'm sure that watching That Film was not fun at all.

I think the thing which annoys me most about how the Rings Of Power series looks to be shaping up is how tired, uninspired, and overdone it feels already.
The secret and/or forbidden love story trope between an elf and a human? We've literally had this about a billion times already within the silmarillion and LOTR themselves. I would much rather see one of those explored on screen honestly - just give us Beren and Luthien already - but no, Amazon has to create a whole new fucking version of this trope! Honestly, the forbidden love trope is NOT my thing, so maybe this one's just on me, but it feels so overdone in the context both of the tolkienverse - where there are plenty of very cool examples of this trope existing already - and in general media, where the secret lovers trope is already really common.
Why on earth have we gotten rid of long hair for male elves and beards for female dwarves? Sorry, I know I've mentioned this a lot of times, but this is a hill I'm willing to die on. Okay, let's say that I give the studio a pass for not giving female dwarves beards, because Tolkien's writings are admittedly sometimes contradictory on this matter. But I still just think it feels like pointlessly diminishing what could have been a very cool worldbuilding trait and character feature, especially since the Jackson films confirmed that female dwarves have beards and many fans really like this theory.
And the elves - this is what gets me the most; considering how much effort Tolkien goes to to emphasise how important hair is to the elves, how formative it is to their identity, it feels callous and silly to give elves short hair. Almost every piece of media I've ever seen for the tolkienverse - be it animated, illustrated, written, or filmed - has given elves long hair. It's pretty much accepted canon at this point, and you can hardly say that the LOTR franchise suffered because it defied gender categories in such a relatively small way. In fact, I know that long haired male elves were something of an awakening for many... :^)
Amazon, by getting rid of this central part of worldbuilding for the elves and dwarves, is not "doing something" here. It is not a revolutionary leap away from Tolkien's works to make the works better and more interesting, the show isn't playing around or even genuinely trying to engage with the original material at all. It just feels like they're trying to reinforce gender stereotypes on characters to make them more palatable to the general public, to make this show more marketable. :/
Finally, the erasure of established character personalities - Galadriel as a girlboss feanorian and Elrond as a 'politically ambitious' guy - feels so weird to me. Honestly, I think Amazon just took the characters everyone who's seen the LOTR films would know, because they're hoping to get people more engaged with the show that way, and they're twisting the narrative around these characters to make them more marketable. That's why we've got Elrond, Galadriel, and rumours of Isildur appearing in the show (and, arguably, why Celebrimbor and Gil-Galad seem to be playing such small roles comparatively despite being very central to the original plot of the Silmarillion). Again, sacrificing the actual story for the sake of making this show more marketable to the general public.
It feels, generally, like the show has changed or sacrificed crucial aspects of itself to become more attractive to a mainstream audience, but I really think that's a shame - LOTR is already a beloved story, it's already well known and liked, and you don't have to put more fuckable characters in or girlbossify characters to make the show sell. People would have watched it anyway, but now we might be getting a tired GOT rip-off instead. It also feels like the showrunners are emulating the vibes of LOTR and the Silmarillion, but not really immersing themselves in it. It feels like its own story entirely, with a whole different vibe, message, and goal, which just incidentally happens to borrow the tolkienverse as a vague backdrop - NOT actually an adaptation of the Silmarillion like it claims to be.
I don't want to count all my chickens before they hatch - maybe (very possibly!) I'll be wrong about some of these things, I really hope I am! Obviously the show hasn't come out yet so I don't want to condemn it entirely (though I would encourage folks to 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️ it when it comes out, rather than give Bezos money). At the moment, I'm just (somewhat passive-aggressively) airing my thoughts.
But, maybe it will genuinely surprise people and be pretty good. I also don't want to hate on the cast, especially those who are playing new characters specifically made for the series... they're just doing their jobs at the end of the day, some of them seem really excited and committed to their roles, and of course we may also be pleasantly surprised by them! Most of the current grudges I hold are against the studio and the writers.

Reading hot takes from some people scares me.
I like Hama's character in ATLA. And I think she was really nicely done and brilliant villain. But people who say "Hama did nothing wrong" are terrifying.
There are two things about Hama that are really unsettling and worrisome;
1) Hama was somehow racist. Not she she, but her character. As we know water tribe is based on Inuit people. And portraying PoC as vindictive and bloodthirsty (amusing coincidence), revenge wanting monster really strikes me as this irrational fear of white people. "Oh these savages want revenge!" and "They'll kill us all for our forefathers sins!". And it's none of that? I cannot really speak for all people of colour, especially aboriginal inhabitants of America or Australia, but from what I can read from these very people, I am 99% sure all of them want to be treated as human beings not as sub-type of human. And want their land back and start the slow process of healing it.
And 2) Hama *was* in the wrong and she *was* an evil character, whether you consider the prior point valid or not. Hama was enacting vengence for her hurt on people who have not hurt her. It's not like she was attacking fire nation soliders or harming the military. She was attacking citizens of fire nation that are probably just as scared from the war. Fire nation really was brain washed into this war, they're not mindless, heartless monsters. We don't know if she just locked and starved these people to death in that cave, her actions are just as cruel as fire nation's. You're not allowed to girlbossify whatever she had going on.
So sorry but if you consider "considering Hama as a evil character" a red flag in a person or an ick, then there is good chance something is red or icky about you.

I'm not sure what Amber Heard being white has to do at all with anything considering that Depp is also white (and a white man at that) and "white woman tears" work against poc, NOT other, more priveleged white people.
I really hope it won't come off rude but.... are you White, anon?💀 It feels so... because for Black people, White women have this bad rep of being unnecessary dramatic and manipulative with their performance tears. It doesn't have to involve any POC (but when it does, the Karen meme has a purpose... but we all know it got the whitefem pressedt lmao). White men don't do that. They don't tear up once they get caught up with their racism. And it's about time Whitefem stop hiding behind White men toxicity to deflect about their own. (Black) People clowning Heard & the delulu whitefem defending her aren't doing so out of defense of Depp or men. Most Blacks watch this trial as White on White crime 💀 That's right : they will see the Depp/Heard trial, see 2 messy White people, realize they don't have a dog and this fight and leave. That's not misogyny.
And let's not forget the very specific entitlement White radfem to NEVER TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY for their toxic behavior. Ever wondered why movements such as the shoplifting community was championed by White girls? Why you only see White radfem girlbossify serial killers or murderers like Aileen Wuornos orJodi Arias? Straight up calling them "victims" and all? Sorry but I've never seen Black women entertain that type of glorification of such horrendous things. Why? Probably bc we get early on in life that society won't be as forgiving with us, as it is with you. We don't glorify the hassle of sucking up violently to mEn because being Black is already exhausting enough.. We aren't out there defending Black female serial killers and getting pissy at the world for hating them neither because we're not delusional and know our place in the world.. Regardless what whitefem say, their whole behavior screams entitlement to less accountability, because that's how society treats them like. Hence defending murderers or abusers like Heard and calling them "victims". Black women could never. And despite their endless corny tantrums online, Heard wk aren't entitled to our ally ship in that deranged fight.
...then Whitefem may argue back that "yOu dOnt HavE tO Be pErFecT to Be a ViCtIm" but they don't understand that 1) it still doesn't make you entitled to anyone's defense or support. People will always be more inclined to show compassion with non violent people being victim of abuse than someone who's actually been an abuser themselves getting their butt bitten back by karma. It's really not rocket science. And it's not misogyny. 2) this argument could be said about Depp but watch his antis bring out him being an addict and dating younger women as aggravating "evidence" to discredit him.... So he has to be perfect/not problematic to be credible as a victim of domestic violence, but not Heard?🤔 I hate this hypocrisy.
For the most part, Black women don't care about this whole trial..exactly like Whitefem don't care when highly publicized Black female struggle with Black men violence (interesting how we didn't have these whitefem writing tantrums about abused women credibility & demonization when Megan Thee Stallion beside NOT being an abuser herself like Heard got her bloody foot shoot by her bf at a party with other A+ celebrities and that the whole internet clowned her for making everything up... 🙃)
Whitefem need to stop acting everything had to be misogyny and grasp that their girlboss abusive White queen isn't entitled to ALL women's defense. They'll clown Depp wk for simping after rich White men but do the same with Heard (especially since a bunch of radfem are bi/lesbians) thinking they're so much better...🙄 That's why Blacks/POC/normie White women are clowning you all. Both sides are doing too much. If everyone took their meds, they would be on a better place.

Lotr film fans utterly shunning the new amazon show.... it’s just so funny like I saw someone say it was ‘unnacceptable to change the canon’ beloveds? So far RoP has announced less changes to the base canon than Peter Jackson got away with like all this is exactly what the lotr films did like Contracted timeline? Check. Girlbossified character? Check. Changed hair colours etc? Check. Completely unrecognisable character motives? Check. Made characters younger than they should be? Check. SEEMS TO HAVE COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN ANARION? CHECK!! If you’re running your own amazon boycott then fair enough but if it’s just because you think Sauron (who we haven’t seen or heard cast yet) isn’t going to be hot then say sorry to ‘beautiful, dark eyed’ Denethor right now.

you know what it is. i dont like that ctechno turns other characters into revenge getting girlbosses when their stories are tragedies and them becoming more violent and willing to throw away their morals only Adds to that tragedy and yet itll probably never be addressed bc hey if youre on ctechnos side youre on the Right Side and no criticism of your or the rest of his friends actions that involve him is allowed ever. like we already had so many long discussions about cniki not being a girlboss but rather just some pathetic and tragic woman whose doing shit things bc she has nothing left and those discussions are Still Going
hell, we even already had a talk about girlbossifying ctubbo and ignoring the tragedy and nuance in his character because wooo get it nuke boy blow em up #win #girlboss! and now we're kind of just back to that, hopefully not for long. sorry to believe in actual healing arcs but i really do hope the story goes in a way where ctubbo is recognized as engaging in unhealthy behaviors and how ctechno Encourages such unhealthy behaviors.
it feels awkward to have stories about how revenge isnt the way and instead there should be people getting together to support each other and build up a community meanwhile theres ctechno n co going "yeah revenge is ok and we're badasses for taking down the evil villain ^^" while Also having them.. not acknowledge anything about, say, jailbreak? or how cdream is loose and they arent doing anything about it (esp bc 3/4ths of the syndicate banded together to get him out but its just.. okay that they did that i guess) like. ctubbo and ceret should, know cdream is a shitty person and ctechno letting him out should be scorned? ctubbo especially like him nearly getting killed is apart of why cdream was In prison he was There when cdream got imprisoned but he seems to have just, forgotten about all of that
i dont know. ctubbos story esp has been about community and how repressing his feelings and only choosing certain people to be mad at at certain times is Unhealthy for him and how he deserves some time to just Rest and stop getting shoved around by others and how unfair it is to him that he keeps getting caught up in the middle of feuds and its just like. i really do hope hes supposed to be engaging in unhealthy behavior right now because it doesnt feel right to paint this as. the Best Option for ctubbo. this isnt the best option for ctubbo.
he hasnt seen most of his old friends in months, he and cquackitys relationship is rocky, he doesnt like or trust ceret or cwilbur and apparently believes theyre scum (and before anyone points out that he Could Have been joking about being sus of ceret- could have been joking is not great writing practice when its used over and over and muddles understanding of whats actually going on), his son is just. goin to grow up living with his traumatized dad, dead other dad, and two people who traumatized said traumatized dad and still have a lot of things they dont regret in terms of helping in traumatizing said traumatized dad and hes likely gonna go down as a shit parent for a lot of the shit surrounding michael b rn, his homes are all abandoned or destroyed and he just has no closure about any of that apparently, he hasnt been given much closure about most of the deaths pertaining to his loved ones, and even more that makes his story extremely concerning to go in this direction (especially since he started off so strong w the snowchester monologue that hit the point exactly, just for him to sort of ignore what Brought him to snowchester and encouraged him to do everything he did later on?)
him and cniki are starting to be really similar again, and not in a good way. i think if dsmp genuinely ends with an overarching "ctechno was right all along and did nothing wrong and its good that he encourages other characters to throw away their morals and negative feelings towards him so they can hurt other people and get Revenge (even though the story has shown multiple times how unhealthy that kind of thinking is and how it corrupts you)" message id actually have to put my mind to rewriting the plot myself
